SQUAD TAKES SHAPE

T

The high-flying Hibernian squad continues to evolve ahead of the transfer deadline, which falls on midnight on October 5. Goalkeeper Dillon Barnes joins the group on a season-long loan from QPR to provide competition for Ofir Marciano, which has allowed Kevin Dabrowski to move on loan to Dumbarton and

experience the kind of regular exposure to first-team football that should accelerate his development. Daryl Horgan joined Championship side Wycombe Wanders and netted on his debut, with his replacement – Jamie Murphy – impressing in the 3-0 win over St Mirren. Stephen McGinn signed on for the rest of the season and adds experience and versatility

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD PROSPECTS ENROL IN NEW COURSE Hibernian FC have teamed up with Edinburgh Napier University to ensure some of our brightest young talents are challenged off the pitch as well as on it. A new course has been specifically tailored towards players whose training commitments make traditional study options difficult. Napier’s innovative part-time programme combines campus-based workshops and online learning, which will develop the players’ knowledge of elite sport in a business context. This approach is being used to allow the players to understand their new environment, find their place within it and connect more productively with the world of professional sport and employment. Hibs kids Connor Young, Josh O’Connor and Murray Johnson will begin their studies this month at a level which offers six modules over two years to Certificate of Higher Education standard – with

topics including ‘psychology’, ‘the athlete in sport’ and ‘football in the digital age’. They can continue studying part-time for a further two to four years to complete a BA in Business and Enterprise in Sport degree. Sporting Director Graeme Mathie said: “It’s a fantastic position for us as a club to be able to deliver not only a high-quality football education but now – through this partnership with Napier University – a high-quality educational programme for our players. “It is very much aligned to our strategic aim of being a ‘learner’s club’ and I have no doubt our players will benefit from the programme. “I would like to place on record my thanks to my colleagues Sean McPartlin and Steve Curnyn, who have been in discussions with Napier for some time in order to deliver this partnership and also to confirm a list of learners of various ages and stages from within the club.”

INSIDE THE BOX We had five products of the Hibernian Academy on the pitch when we saw out the 1-0 win at St Mirren, which is a real source of pride for everyone connected with the club. Over the years a fruitful conveyor belt of talent has helped produce players of real character and quality, who have gone on to make a name for themselves at Easter Road and further afield. It’s a tradition we want to continue and see go from strength to strength and now supporters have the chance to aid that effort. Our new monthly raffle – Inside The Box – will see proceeds diverted to our youth system, while offering you the chance to win a unique prize. This month we have a rare mini Scottish Cup trophy, signed by Alan Stubbs. You can buy one ticket for £5 or five tickets for £10 – and you have until 12pm on Monday 21 September to snap them up from our eTicketing platform.

The Hibees’ 3-0 win at St Mirren for his senior debut and savoured every second.

But nothing was about to wipe the smile from Hibs kid Ryan Shanley’s face in Paisley last Saturday. The 19-year-old striker replaced Martin Boyle for the final three minutes of

Having come through that and a rain-soaked touchline interview with lookalike team-mate Joe Newell for Hibs TV, we sat down with Ryan a few days on at HTC to reflect on a moment he’ll remember forever.

RYAN, YOU’RE STILL SMILING. HOW’S IT BEEN SINCE SATURDAY? Well, my phone hasn’t stopped since. I’ve had all sorts of nice messages from people – friends, family and supporters alike. I even had one from my old Primary One teacher to say ‘congratulations’. She initially got in touch when I signed my first professional contract to see if I was the boy from her old class. I hope I’ve done her proud!

IT’S BEEN A WHIRLWIND FEW DAYS FOR YOU. TALK US THROUGH THE BUILD-UP TO THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO BE INVOLVED FOR THE FIRST TIME. There was talk that I’d be going out on loan but then I joined back up with the first-team squad for training and it all went from there. I felt like I’d done well and was hopeful of at least being part of the matchday squad -even as the unstripped player for the experience. I only found out I’d made the bench on the morning of the game, when the gaffer put up a PowerPoint around how the team was going to set up. I was sitting there trying to keep my composure but it was a great feeling and a moment that will live with me forever.

WHAT ABOUT THE GAME ITSELF? DID THE COACHING STAFF SAY MUCH TO YOU BEFORE YOU WENT ON? I think, like every player on the bench, that I was sitting there desperate to be involved – especially with the team playing so well on the day. The message was nice and simple, which probably helped. The gaffer told me just to go and enjoy it. I was lucky enough to get a few touches and I feel very privileged to have got the chance to do that for the club I grew up supporting.

WE SAW A FEW OF THE PLAYERS TAKE TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON YOUR FIRST APPEARANCE. WHO HAS BEEN LOOKING AFTER YOU AROUND HTC? I’m not trying to duck the question, but I’d have to say all of the senior players. Since the start of pre-season I can’t think of one person who hasn’t helped me

out in some way, shape or form. They’ve all been brand new. It’s surreal when I think back to when I was younger, looking up to guys like David Gray, Darren McGregor, Lewis Stevenson and Paul Hanlon.

THE CLUB OBVIOUSLY MEANS A LOT TO YOU. I’ve been a Hibs supporter all my days – me and the family from Muirhouse. I went to games when I could, but it was difficult because I was always playing for my own teams from an early stage. I only joined the club at Under-15 level, which maybe makes me a bit of a late developer. Previously I’d played for Hutchison Vale and my local boys club, Craigroyston. Not everyone gets the chance to have played regularly with their friends so I enjoyed that at the time but it’s something else to be playing for the team you grew up supporting. I know how fortunate I am to be in this position.

YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE IN YOUR FAMILY WHO CAN SAY THAT… That’s right. Derek Riordan’s my cousin and he obviously doesn’t need much of an introduction. I remember seeing him out and about as he’s local to me. I used to be so shy around him – a bit starstruck. He was a footballer in my eyes, rather than my cousin. I’m a bit young to have seen him play in his prime but I’ve watched a fair bit back. You have to respect what he achieved. He’s a Hibs fan who lived the dream.

ALL THIS MUST HAVE SEEMED A LONG WAY OFF DURING A FRUSTRATING SPELL IN LOCKDOWN? It was hard but I think the trick was trying to see it as an opportunity at the same time – something to make the most of. I really missed the day-to-day aspect at HTC. People maybe only see players on a matchday but we’re like one big family. You see more of these guys than you do your own relations. We had our fitness programme to follow and Steve Curnyn (Head of Academy Football Science and Medicine) was doing his animal flow movements on Instagram. I did some of that to look after my back. I was lucky to be in the first group that came back to training – with the first team. It had been in the back of my head that I’d maybe have to wait a bit longer so that came as a real boost.

WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE? Whether I go out on loan now or stay involved with the squad, I know I’ve made progress. But, as proud as I am to have made my debut, I want to make sure that’s a highlight but not the highlight. Hopefully it’s the first of many.

WE FINISHED THE GAME ON SATURDAY WITH FIVE HIBERNIAN ACADEMY GRADUATES ON THE PARK. THAT MUST GIVE HOPE TO THE GUYS HOPING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS. It’s a club that have always given young players an opportunity. You just need to work hard and make the most of your opportunity when it comes. It feels like Ryan Porteous has been involved for ages. Jamie Gullan and Josh Doig have both done really well of late. It would be great to get some more minutes under my belt and there are other boys in there who would love a shot. The gaffer and John Potter have shown that they will give people that chance.

STEVEN GERRARD Such is his standing in the global game, Steven Gerrard barely needs an introduction. Revered for his achievements on the pitch, he’s still earning his stripes off it. Rangers have enjoyed sustained runs in the Europa League in his tenure, but would undoubtedly trade that for securing a long-awaited 55th top-flight title. Having beefed up his attacking options so they’re less reliant on the talismanic Alfredo Morelos, Rangers look well-placed to at least run Celtic close this time.

C AP TA IN

JAMES TAVERNIER A survivor of the 2016 William Hill Scottish Cup Final, it says a lot for James Tavernier that he’s managed to survive and thrive in Glasgow’s well-documented goldfish bowl. With an assist and goals tally that would be welcomed by plenty strikers, the rampaging rightback is arguably one of Rangers’ most potent attacking weapons. Former team-mate Andy Halliday recently commented on his understated leadership qualities. If Rangers are to achieve their goals, Tavernier will be at the heart of it.

K E Y PL AY ER

STEVEN DAVIS During the last international break, Northern Ireland stalwart Steven Davis pulled level with Pat Jennings as his country’s record cap holder. Now 35, he’s showing no signs of slowing down and returned to Premiership action by running the show in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Dundee United. Afterwards his manager said: “He’s a special footballer. He goes out, does the job, exactly what you ask him to do. He’s a top class individual.” 20

Ianis Hagi blasted home with a late volley on his first start for Rangers as the hosts came from behind to win against a dogged Hibernian side who were unfortunate not to claim something from the game. Paul Hanlon gave The Hibees hope with a volleyed opener, only for George Edmundson to level on the stroke of half-time. Rangers, to their credit, upped the ante after the interval and – six minutes from time – that pressure paid off as Hagi’s moment of quality made all the difference. OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGR AMME
