Getting G

etting organized is New Year’s resolutions for

If you are one of those trying to get a little bit more organized this year, but haven’t quite gotten off the mark, what’s holding you back? Are you overwhelmed and wondering where to start? Are you too busy? No matter the excuse, we’ve put together a list of 10 simple things you can do today, this week or this month to get you on your way to a neater, more organized life. 1. Enlist the Troops If you find you’re just too busy and can’t find the time to get organized, you need to learn the power of delegation. Enlist the January - February 2010

help of family members or roommates by using a laminated calendar and dry-erase markers to list chores/errands/tasks for each person to do each week. This step alone will get everyone in your home more organized and that makes less “tornado” cleanup work for you! If you don’t have people to share the load, consider enlisting the help of a buddy to get you motivated, or hiring a professional to get you started. 2. Use the “One-A-Week” Goal Focus is a powerful thing. Pick one, and only one, area of your home per week to spend an hour or two reorganizing or cleaning.

13

Hi Class Living

Whether it’s the pantry, closet or bathroom drawers, set the time and date and be done. Trying to spend a whole Saturday doing a sweep clean may work once in a while, but it usually just leads to an aggravated and exhausted family and a frustrated you.

3. Take a Commercial Break

Anytime you’re watching TV, take the time during commercials to tidy up one room of the house. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

4. Start a Family Agenda

If schedules are hectic, one central family “appointment” book where everyone in the house writes in all school, work, social, athletic and other commitments will eliminate a lot of headaches. If you keep it in a central spot, the whole family can get up to speed quickly without relying on one person (Mom) to know everyone’s schedule, reducing chances that someone will be double-booked by mistake.

5. Set up a Mail Center

The mail pile is a problem area for many people. To keep yours under control, set up a mail center in your foyer, hallway or kitchen. The most essential part of your mail station: a stylish recycling bin for all of that unsightly junk mail that makes its way into your mailbox each day. Try a mail depot with different compartments for each member of the household, plus a separate one for catalogs and magazines.

6. Can the Spam!

If you have e-mail and you haven’t set up your spam filters, you could save yourself at least five minutes a day by eliminating or at least seriously curbing unsolicited e-mails that you have to deal with. You’ll not only save time by ensuring you receive only your most important messages, you’ll reduce the potential of getting a virus.

7. Start a YUNK Box

Do you have papers that you are holdJanuary - February 2010

ing on to, not because you need them, but because you’re afraid that if you throw them out, you might just need them? If so, you should start a YUNK box. YUNK stands for “YoU Never Know,” the perfect name for those betwixt-and-between files. Your box can be a simple cardboard box, a durable plastic container or even an accordion file -- whatever works for you. You may also want to create one for holding the magazine pages, brochures and photos that inspire you or represent things you want to try or do someday (such as that brochure showcasing the relaxing vacation in the Caribbean, a wine label or the picture of a dream house).

8. Clear Clutter From Car

Is your car a rolling junk bin? Improve the environment you spend so much time in by grabbing a trash bag and sifting through the clutter, throwing away garbage or junk. Don’t forget to check the glove compartment and seatback pockets for unnecessary items. The whole process shouldn’t take more than 10 or 15 minutes.

9. Organize Family Paperwork One Week at a Time

We all know we should organize our most important documents and family information, but it can seem like a daunting task. Get a binder with six tabs and create six sections: family basics, emergency plan, medical information, insurance, finances and legal. Take one week at a time to organize the information for each area.

10. Simple File

If you don’t have a filing system, get started with a simple one. Get 13 hanging folders with labels and make space in a portable file box or cabinet drawer. Label 10 files: Home, Medical, Family, School/ Work, Dental, Legal, Credit Card, Bank, Insurance, Taxes. Make two miscellaneous, and one active. Put anything you’ll need for the next week or two in the Active file so it’s easy to get to. ∆

Valentine-Day Tips For Every Heart By Jan Denise

A

re you trying to decide if he (or she) is not that into you? Before you break the bank or take time off from work to try harder, he’s probably not that into you if:

1. He’s not that into himself. And you can tell how into himself he is by how well he knows himself – not how arrogant he is. 2. He doesn’t know who you are – not what you do for a living or a list of facts – what’s important to you, what you stand for, what you’re passionate about. 3. He doesn’t respect you for who you are. 4. He’s more interested in what you do together than just spending time together. 5. He talks to you but doesn’t listen to you or listens to you but doesn’t talk to you. 6. He doesn’t introduce you to his family and friends or take you to his office party.

7. He spends money freely on himself but skimps on you. 8. He doesn’t respond (out of desire, rather than obligation) when you need help. 9. He wants to have sex with you but doesn’t want to sleep with you. 10. He uses you to feed his ego, secure his position or appease his family. Note: If you think you are that into somebody and, based on the above, you’re not showing it, ask yourself why? Be honest with yourself, and act on what you learn. Want to enliven your sexuality? 1. Bag what seems frumpy, and give it to charity. 2. Exercise to increase stamina, blood

flow to the genitals and satisfaction when you look in the mirror. 3. Tickle and tease each other; run, play, and fall down. 4. Let go of rules, loosen up, and explore. Ask candid questions about what’s arousing – when and why and where – and answer them. 5. You don’t have to plan sex, but allow time (more than you think you need) for it to happen when you’re not exhausted or preoccupied. 6. Stimulate your senses with an erotic movie, a bath, lingerie or a picnic under the stars. Want to reconnect and feel more intimacy? 1. Turn off the phones, computers and TVs. Turn down the lights, and be present with each other. 2. Go for a walk in the woods or on the beach. Get to know each other all over again and reconnect. 3. Do together what you’d normally do alone. 4. Spend less time growing intimacy with other people, and opt to spend more time with each other. 5. Schedule things you both enjoy that

also allow you to spend quality time together (hiking, star gazing, dinner, reading poetry out loud, an art walk) – and make doing them a priority. 6. Try limiting a conversation to feelings about your relationship – no weather, no kids, no politics. And say what you’re afraid to say! Not in a relationship and want to be? 1. Meet yourself, as if for the first time. 2. Go through the motions of a dialogue with yourself and form an impression of you, the way somebody else would in the process of getting to know you. 3. Repeat one and two until you’re more comfortable in your own skin, with fewer reasons to be guarded (just looking at them helps to invalidate them). 4. Now, talk to yourself about what you like and don’t like about your life, where you are and where you want to be. 5. Make a list of what you can do about it and forgive yourself for not having done it sooner. 6. Do what you can – this is enough to make you feel good about yourself – and while you’re glowing, you’ll meet somebody wonderful you can grow with. ∆

Mirror Reflects Hunger Within By Jan Denise

T

wo out of three Americans are overweight, making obesity the second leading cause of preventable death. Instead of eating less, we spend $35 billion a year on weight loss products. We’re not stupid; we’re in pain. We have an emptiness, a yearning, a hunger, and we’re doing our damnedest to satisfy it with food. We can’t.

Are You Sick and Tired of Being “Sick And Tired”? Call Certified Holistic Nutritionist

Elena Rotolo specializing in:

• Autoimmune Diseases • Diabetes • Menopause • Eating Disorders • Holistic Weight Loss

So, what is this hunger, and how can we satisfy it? We want to feel connected and secure, we want to have something to contribute and we want to be gaining ground. We want to know that we’re worthwhile. And when we feel like we’re coming up short, many of us resort to what we know will give us pleasure — another potato chip, ice cream or chocolate. It’s a temporary fix, though; and as is the case with any addiction, we begin to

need more — only more is never enough. In her new book, “The Hunger Within,” Marilyn Ann Migliore, a nutritionist and psychotherapist at the University of Michigan, helps us address the root cause of unwanted eating behaviors. “We use food (a drug) in an insatiable quest to fill an emotional void,” says Migliore. Instead of eating more cookies, we can work toward filling the emotional void. And, no, it’s not too late for you. Let me introduce you to Keith Ahrens, who lost an amazing 200 pounds and became a certified fitness trainer. I recently met Ahrens, who’s also the author of a new memoir, “Outrunning My Shadow,” and felt the sincerity of his goal to help others. When Ahrens faced open-heart surgery, he gained respect for his body. He started eating in an entirely new way and made a commitment to exercise. When he began to demonstrate a new level of respect for his body by changing his eating and exercise habits, he also began to align his behavior with his values. He was on the path to self-esteem and feeling good about himself! And as he shed the pounds and got more physically fit, the way he thought about himself continued to change. Thoughts trigger feelings, which inspire actions, which yield results. It’s a cycle. Positive thoughts lead to positive results, which lead to still more positive thoughts.

In changing the way Ahrens saw himself, he also changed the way others saw him. How would your relationships and your life change if you were to lose weight? How would they change if you recognized the hunger within and took legitimate steps to fill it? “I can help people focus on the positive, the guilt-free you-can-do-it attitude that so many of us need when faced with drastic change,” says Ahrens. “The essence of my message is simple: get a checkup, move more today than you did yesterday, make a difference in your own well-being, and take control.” When you do that, you begin to care for yourself. You begin to love yourself well. And that is the key to filling the hunger within to which Migliore directs our attention. Don’t wait until it’s a matter of life or death to realize that you’re eating to satisfy more than a physical hunger. Look now at why you are eating and how eating too much is affecting your health — physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually. Take steps, however small, to show yourself the respect you deserve. You’ll immediately be empowered to take another step and another step. They don’t have to be big steps. Just take them one at a time. You’ll find yourself moving away from the pain with a healthier and happier heart and the knowledge that you are indeed worthwhile. ∆

How Much Should You Be Saving? By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

T

his is one of the simplest, but most important, questions in financial planning. Many of us are much more interested in discussing esoteric investments, but at the end of the day, the amount of money you save will likely have an even bigger impact on your success.

A comfortable, financially secure retirement is certainly the biggest challenge for most of us. I’ll devote most of my answer to that critical issue, but I will review some other common savings goals as well. Of course, like so many personal finance questions, there’s no single correct answer that works for everyone. You can find all kinds of calculators and tools online to help you figure out how much money you’ll January - February 2010

ultimately need for retirement. But the following guidelines can be helpful. Also, understand that the experts who did the math for us made some assumptions. For example, they assume that you’ll need about 80 percent of your preretirement, pre-tax income, and that your retirement will last about 30 years. They are also assuming that you will keep working (and saving) until that time. And they sup-

24

pose that you have no current savings at all -- that you’re starting from scratch. The bottom line? As you might guess, the younger you are, the less you have to save as a percentage of current income. And the differences are pretty dramatic: • If you’re getting started in your 20s: Save 10 percent to 15 percent of your pretax income. • If you’re getting started in your 30s: Save 15 percent to 25 percent of your pretax income. • If you’re in your early 40s: You’ll need to save 25 percent to 35 percent of your pretax income to ensure a comfortable retirement, which is starting to be a meaningful chunk of your income. • And if you’re 45 or older: Well, now the percentages start to get big quickly. A 46-year-old, for example, will need to save about 40 percent of pre-tax income; someone over 50 who is just starting to

save will need to set aside about 60 percent of pre-tax income. The real beauty of these guidelines (especially if you’re still young) is that the percentages won’t change as you get older. If you’re 25 and can save 15 percent of your income for retirement, you probably won’t need to save more than 15 percent as you age. Starting early is a huge advantage, thanks mostly to that investing miracle: compound returns. Of course, saving 15 percent of your pre-tax income when you’re 25 is not easy. Young adults are typically just getting going in their careers -- with salaries to match. They might have student loans to pay off. And some young people simply find it difficult to put money away for a goal like retirement that seems impossibly far into the future. But the numbers don’t lie: Retirement is a hugely expensive challenge, and the earlier you start investing for 46

hen buying a coat you don’t have to settle for any boring basic. Think of it like an accessory — sort of like the handbag you wear every day. It always makes a first impression, so why not make it special?

Buying a coat can be a major investment, so shop around. Whether you need a casual workhorse like a peacoat, or a serious classic like a trench, or an elegant evening statement like a glamorouscape, find a coat that gives you thrills, but keeps you away from the chills every time you put it on. There are so many new coats to check out this winter from classic camel reefers to colorful peacoats to cozy blanket wraps to long, belted puffers. The details can make all the difference in updating standard basic outerwear: How about ruffles, bows, tartan plaids, bold checks, animal prints, giant buttons or zippy zippers? Take your pick and add some unique style to that first fashion impression you make wherever you go. 74

A sense of “cool” chic still, however, presides over the likes of Madison Avenue and other bastions of corporate style. Here’s a list of the latest power points of the modern wardrobe for mad men and women: The tailored suit Don Draper may be all about the impeccably tailored suit with his stack of freshly pressed shirts stashed in his desk drawer, but today’s young executive has many more choices than Don did back in the ‘60s. Today’s newest suit silhouettes are slimmer and can be dressed up more formally 30

The power suit for women It is also about a new silhouette: the volume is on top with the focus on strong shoulder and lapel shapes that are teamed up with slimmer skirts and trousers. You can even “power up” with creative jackets in wool double-breasted cardigans or cropped military coats for more innovative looks. And don’t forget there are lots of knee-length “city” coats and trenches out there that can do double duty as jackets and outerwear, especially in cold weather. The new starched shirt Yes, the white shirt may have been de rigueur for the ‘60s generation of advertising executives, but now you can get away with a few new “buttoned down” alternatives. Think plaid, checks and stripes.

The pencil skirt Hey, we’ve all grown accustomed to showing up in our “pantsuits” — liberated from pantyhose and skirt suits that Joan Holloway wears in “Mad Men.” Now that we’ve all breathed a sigh of relief, we can still appreciate a little “sex appeal” at the office, now can’t we? So, ditch the pants for a day or two, and try on a shorter knee-length skirt. Add dark tights and suede booties and oh... you’ve got a mad, mad look. 34

Think huge shoulder pads, ripped jeans, cat eye makeup and teetering stilettos... and you get the picture of the ultimate fashion victim. Real style is all about making your clothes work for you, not against you. Put your own twist on those runway trends and come up with a personal fashion statement that makes you stand out from the crowd in a good way! Choose one special piece (I have a wide silver cuff that I wear almost every day) or a flattering color (a friend wears some version of purple all the time), and you’ll have a distinctive “look” that sets you apart from the fashion pack. Think about what makes you feel good Make a list of your favorite pieces. Are you a bohemian hippie in disguise, but wear only tailored clothes that make you want to itch your way out of them the minute you get home from work? Or do you dream of dressing up in ladylike pumps and plaids instead of boots and jeans? Narrow down your “identity” — classic, bohemian, minimalist, romantic — and suddenly shopping will become a real treat.

Experiment with volume control Get a head-to-toe slimming effect by using the tricks of illusion. IT’S A MAD — From Pg. 31 The soft blouse Add a little twist to your wardrobe. Update the clothes you’ve been wearing for years. Take the “soft” and pair it with the “hard” - that’s the modern way. Or, if you can get away with it, you do the white bow-tie satin top with a leather bomber jacket. Sharp and to the point. The rugged coat It’s the same with the guys. Even if you’re in a casual-Friday office most of the time, this is the time to mix a little hard ball with the soft-ball team. The eyes have it when it comes to the top beauty news this fall. Barbie’s 50th birthday inspired many fashion designers to recreate her exaggerated cat eyes and bold lips on the runways. The sexy smoky eye was the headliner, and makeup artists layered it on thick. Think upswept winged liners and smudged charcoal shadows. If you’re into experimenting with the look of this new ferocious “feline” eye, then you definitely want to invest in some liquid eyeliner. Check out Nars’ Eyeliner Stylo, which works like a felt-tip pen (www.narscosmetics.com), Shiseido’s Accentuating cream eyeliner at (www.sephora.com) or Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner (www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com). Liners that go on smooth are a must; not a dry drag on your lids like some pencils can be. And if the cat eyes are not purr-fect for you, then you can still go gray. Brush on a more subtle shimmer of silvery zinc or pewter eye shadow, and line the upper and lower rims of your lashes with a sliver of black or brown liner. Don’t forget the brows either. Go for bold strokes with the liner brush to give your brows a more structured feeling that frames the face and complements the standout eyes. The lips are also getting the big beauty smack down on the trend list. The mood is dark with sultry shades of purples, plums and burgundies. Bold red is another standout lip color that makes a great fashion statement with the smoky eye shadows. And glossy lips are also a juicy way to go -- harking back to those kissable pouts of the ‘80s. So, how do you choose the purr-fect eye shadows? Here are some tips from Liz Pugh, celebrity makeup artist for Rimmel London: • “When choosing a color for your eyes, you want to choose a shade that contrasts with your eye color to make your eyes really stand out,” she says. Don’t choose a matching shade.” • “Warm-colored eyes, brown and hazel, look great with cool shades, blues, greens January - February 2010

and violets. Cool-colored eyes, blue and green, work well with warmer shades, peaches, caramels, oranges and coppers.” FOR BLUE EYES • “A blue eye shadow will not emphasize the blue of your eyes; it will just blend with the color leaving your eyes very flat. Try using golds, oranges, coppers and browns. These shades contrast to the blue so the blue will really pop. All of the shades work well on blue eyes whether you mix them up or pick a single shade to wear. It’s such a great versatile palette.” FOR GREEN EYES • “Green eyes look great with pinks, rusts, mauves, peaches and apricot shades. FOR BROWN EYES • “Brown eyes look great with most colors, especially blues, purples and olive greens. Try a navy eyeliner instead of black to really bring your eyes to life. If you wear a brown shadow choose a brown, such as burnt orange, copper or bronze that is different from the brown in your eyes; never match it to the brown of your eyes. With hazel eyes, you can choose the shade in your eyes you want to pop out, so if you want to enhance the green, choose a shade suited for green eyes.” ALL EYE COLORS • “You can begin adding a little color into your eye makeup by using an eye shadow with a more natural shade. Contour the eye with a taupe and add a subtle wash of color on your lid; it will really make your eye color stand out as it is applied close to your pupil. Neutral shades work well with almost every eye color, so this way it’s easy to try something new by mixing it up. “Or you can try colored eyeliner. Use blue or emerald on brown eyes, gold on blue eyes and purple on green eyes. Just draw a line along the top lash line and watch your eyes come alive.” ∆

Men’s Must

I

t’s a new year and time to freshen up your wardrobe. You know you’re tired of that same old navy blazer and khaki routine. Tom Julian, a menswear industry expert and author of “The Nordstrom Guide to Men’s Style,” recommends the following “must-haves.” • At the top of the debonair fashion list for men, according to Julian, is a cashmere blend or plush-touch, velvet, two-button black blazer. “It can work for proper black tie or creative scenarios,” he says. Layer a velvet blazer over a sweater and trousers or a trim dress shirt in a dark color like smoky gray. Johnny Depp has this look down in an all-black Tom Ford ensemble at a recent Museum of Modern Art tribute to Tim Burton. • While black may be one of the most sophisticated choices for celebrities on the party circuit, a rich shade of wine, claret, russet or merlot is another festive way to drink in the season. Wine adds a depth to traditional winter fabrics and provides an understated pop of color to any wardrobe.” Try pairing a deep merlot blazer over a A new coat is a must-have. camel sweater or a merlot patterned shirt with a burgundy tie. • Another must-have is a half-placket pullover. “From wools to cashmeres, this pullover works for any man,” says Julian, “and age appropriate options can be found everywhere at retail.” You can dress it up with tailored pants or dress it down with jeans. • The quilting trend also steals the spotlight in menswear. “Quilting is the perfect graphic accent to add a touch of luxe to a man’s wardrobe,” says Julian. “Whether it’s a minimal nuance like quilted elbow patches or a standout piece like a quilted tuxedo, this trend can be very versatile and classic.” Julian suggests looking for everything from quilted hunting jackets and knits, as well as a variety of quilting in accessories, such as bags, shoes, belts and gloves. • Tweed is “in” this season, and it’s not just for college professors. “Look for tailored cuts, such as mandarin collar tweed suits or slimming belted trenches, as well as tweed accents on shirts and sweaters,” Julian says. And don’t forget those tweed caps. • A new coat. “For those who value performance and value, consider the trench coat, the car coat or a down puffer,” he says. “For those who look for style, a washed leather motorcycle jacket or a military canvas coat can be great options.” Make sure to look for extra details like zip-out linings and waterproof fabrics that can make a big difference in cold temperatures. ∆

Down And Feather Comforters Rosemary Sadez Friedmann

D

own and feather bedding certainly sounds luxurious, but it can be an economical expense. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends we lower our thermostats by 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours a day in order to save 10 percent on our heating bill. That can mean really cold feet during the winter. Here’s where down feathers come in. With their natural insulating properties, down insulates by trapping warm air and wicking away moisture. This is what makes comforters comfortable. And down comforters are light, too, so you don’t feel buried under heavy coverings. Down is also 100 percent natural. Did you know that synthetic bedding fillers are usually petroleum-based? Here is a list of tips for buying and caring January - February 2010

for a down comforter, brought to you from the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC). • The best comforter stitching allows the down to remain fluffy while minimizing shifting and bunching. Baffle (threedimensional boxes) and sewn-through constructions are the best options. • Look for comforters with shells made of 100 percent cotton and at least a 230-thread count. This will maximize fluffiness and will keep the down from escaping the comforter. • Oversized comforters tend to drape better and accommodate larger mattresses. • The term “fill power” on the label 46 44

refers to the comforter’s insulating ability. The higher the fill power, the more insulating ability per ounce. Look for products with fill powers of 525 or higher. • Place a cover over your down comforter to protect it from dust, dirt and body oils. • Shake out comforters regularly to prevent the down from bunching up. • Comforters can be refreshed by being aired out on a clothesline or shaken out a window. • It is important to follow the instructions on the care label, but most comforters can be machine washed on a gentle cycle using mild, non-bleach detergent. For oversized comforters, go to a Laundromat with oversized washing machines. • To dry a comforter, place it in a dryer on a low setting, and toss in two or three tennis balls to break up any clumps that formed during washing. Drying times vary, but the process may take several hours. It is important that the comforter

be dried thoroughly before use or storage to avoid mildew. • Look for products that carry guarantees against defects in materials and workmanship. The best products have the longest warranties, making them the best value. • Lastly, be sure to always read the labels. It has become customary to do so with food products, but reading labels on bedding is also important because federal and state regulations specify how down and feather products should be listed. The ADFC’s Seal of Approval on the labels is like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. The presence of the Seal of Approval on a product’s package indicates that the manufacturer participates in the ADFC’s Labeling Compliance Program and is committed to “Truth in Labeling.” If you are interested in more information on down and feather bedding, check out the ADFC Web site at www.downandfeather. org. ∆

HOW MUCH — From Pg. 25 it, the better. The easiest way to save is to arrange an automatic transfer to your savings or investment account each month; that way, you won’t have to consciously make the “save or spend” decision each month. A payroll deduction plan is ideal, especially if it goes into a tax-advantaged plan like a 401(k) or an IRA account. Your 401(k) plan contributions are often matched to some degree by your employer, which makes your effective savings rate even higher. These guidelines should put you in good shape for retirement, but people have plenty of other savings goals, too: • Emergency fund: If you don’t have a cash cushion, another goal should be to put away three to six months worth of cash in something very liquid and very safe just in case something unforeseen happens. • A child’s education: If you have kids, saving for college is an excellent idea -- the earlier the better. Use a 529 plan to shelter

investment gains and income from taxes. The amount you need to save will depend on your income and the type of college (public or private) you envision. • The down payment on a house: A more near-term goal for many people is buying a home of their own. If you’ve started saving for retirement and you’ve built an emergency fund, you’ll probably just want to save as much as you can afford (on top of saving for your retirement and other goals) to buy your own home. To recap: Let your goals determine your savings habits. Most of us have multiple savings “buckets,” with retirement being the highest priority. Finally, remember that “saving” in today’s world really means investing. For longer-term goals, you’ll likely need to tap the potential of the financial markets (particularly the equity markets) to give your savings the chance to grow into wealth. Best of luck! ∆

It can also be accompanied by a sense of increased hunger, a craving for carbohydrates and weight gain. Most experts believe SAD is caused by lack of sunlight, which interferes with our sleep-wake cycle or circadian rhythm. Get To The Core

E

xercises that strengthen the “core” - the large muscles of the trunk that stabilize the body - are hot because they improve posture and support the rest of the body through its motions. Try the following exercises: Bridge Exercise Works on: Stabilizes core (abdominal and low back) muscles and strengthens gluteus maximus (buttocks) and hamstrings (back of your thighs) muscles. Setup: Lie on the floor facing up with knees bent at 90 degrees, toes pointing forward and arms by sides. Step 1: Suck in your stomach and remember to keep breathing. Try to touch your belly button to your spine. This abdominal position is maintained throughout the exercise.

STABILITY MATTERS The moves: Sitting on a balance ball with single-leg support. Works on: Balance, core strength. Setup: Choose an area free of obstructions. There are various sizes of balance balls. For sitting activities, the correct size ball is one that allows your hips to be 90 January - February 2010

Step 2: Slowly bring your hips up by contracting buttocks until your knees, hips and shoulders form a straight line. Do not arch your lower back. All the movement should come from your hip joints. Step 3: Hold the position for two to three seconds while squeezing the buttocks. Step 4: Bring your hips down slowly until they almost touch the floor and bring your hips up again. Repetitions: Do six to 12 repetitions for two to three sets. Safety tips: If you cannot maintain normal breathing with your stomach sucked in, practice it first standing or sitting. Keeping the belly button in helps activate deep abdominal muscles and provides stiffness to your lumber spine. ∆

degrees to the torso with the feet flat on the ground and the knees bent 90 degrees. Often the ball is sized correctly, but just needs more air. The firmer the ball, the harder this activity. Steps: Sit on the ball with upright posture and the feet shoulder width apart. Lift one leg from the hip so that the foot is no

Of The Matter longer contacting the ground. When lifting the leg, do not let the lower back slump. Hold this position for up to 30 seconds. Repeat with the opposite leg off the ground. If this initial exercise is too easy, move the foot away from the ball, or slightly bounce on the ball for more challenge. Repetitions: Perform three repetitions of 30 seconds on each leg. Precautions: Falling off the ball is possible for someone with poor balance. Hold on to a table or something stable while learning this activity. Options: For extra challenge, try doing dumbbell raises or overhead presses while balancing on the ball. ∆

Trunk Rotations The moves: Supine rotation of the torso. Works on: Trunk range of motion and core strength. Setup: On a firm surface, lie down on your back. The arms should be 90 degrees to the trunk and resting on the ground. Bend your knees to 90 degrees. Firm the abdominal muscles and flatten the lower back against the floor. With the abs tight and the back flat, lift the legs until the hips are 90 degrees to the trunk. Keep the legs firmly together. The moves: Maintain the above leg and hip position and slowly rotate to one side until the legs almost touch the ground. Pause and repeat the move to the opposite side. Repetitions: Start with one set of rotations for 30 seconds. Progress to three to

five sets, at one minute for each set. Precautions: Progress slowly with the range of motion until you can get near the ground. Do not allow the lower back to arch during this activity. Do not hold your breath. Options: For beginners, keep the heels on the ground and just work on increasing range of motion. For extra challenge, pinch a small dumbbell between the ankles or knees, but take every precaution not to drop it on yourself! ∆

Got A Cold? Bring On The Chicken Soup By Rallie McAllister, M.D.

P

eople have been catching colds since the beginning of time — and for just as long, we’ve been trying to cure them. In spite of our best efforts, the common cold remains one of the most frequently acquired illnesses in the world.

If you’re like most adults, you can expect to catch a cold two to four times each year. With each infection, you’ll likely spend around eight to 10 days coughing, sniffling, sneezing and generally feeling miserable. Colds occur when one of over 200 types of microscopic viruses invades the cells of the nose and throat. The viruses may be tiny, but they’re practically indestructible. Antibiotic drugs capable of stopping bacteria in their tracks can’t put a dent in viruses. Medicines strong enough to kill most cold-causing microbes would January - February 2010

probably kill their human hosts in the process. When it comes to battling colds, most of us have come to accept the limitations of modern medicine. Although scientists have developed a mighty arsenal of hightech drugs to fend off the most dreaded diseases, they still haven’t found a cure for the common cold. Until a cure is found, the best course of action for cold sufferers might be to follow the time-tested advice of mothers everywhere: Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluid and have a bowl of chicken soup.

58

As it turns out, our moms were right. In a laboratory study conducted by researchers at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, chicken soup was found to reduce inflammation and slow the migration of white blood cells to infected tissues. This action is especially beneficial to cold sufferers because within an hour of being infected by cold viruses, the invaded cells of the nose and throat begin to swell. They also release chemicals called prostaglandins, which attract white blood cells to battle the meddling microbes. As the disease-fighting cells report for duty, they begin to pile up by the millions in the nose, throat and lungs, producing a massive flow of mucus that leads to sniffling, sneezing and stuffiness. By interfering with the migration of white blood cells, chicken soup reduces the production of mucus and helps alleviate congestion. Scientists have a few additional 74

Warning Signs Of

F

ollowing a recent survey, the Centers for Disease Control revealed that few people know the warning signs of a stroke.

Only 16.4 percent of adults could identify all of the five warning signs of an impending stroke. Incredibly, very few respondents were able to tell what symptoms did not indicate a stroke, and many inaccurately assumed that the most acute warning sign was chest pain. The CDC considers the following as important warning signs of an impending stroke:

1. Sudden weakness or numbness of the arms, legs or face, especially on one side. 2. Sudden vision problem in one or both eyes. 3. Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination or difficulty walking. 4. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking. 5. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Recognizing these early warnings signs January - February 2010

of stroke is critically important. Unfortunately, the symptoms do not always present in the same way. Symptoms may begin and remain constant, or they may gradually get worse with time. In an episode called a transient ischemic attack, or TIA, symptoms may occur for a short period of time (anywhere from a few minutes to an hour) and then totally disappear. If this occurs for the first time, it is often a harbinger of an impending stroke. Whether the symptoms are transient or not, call 911 and get to an emergency department as soon as possible. The sooner you get to a hospital, the greater the chance that a debilitating stroke or death can be avoided. Not seeking help immediately increases the risk of death, as well as the chances that the stroke will lead to permanent disability, such as inability to walk without assistance, difficulty with speech, incontinence and a decline in cognitive function. 60

Stroke Dr. David Lipschitz

If you do get to the hospital within three hours of the onset of symptoms, imaging studies of the brain and the cerebral artery, through CT and/or MRI scans, can pinpoint the site of the problem. Most commonly, this is a blood clot, but on occasion stroke can be due to a hemorrhage into the brain. Blood clots can arise from the heart or carotid artery, where they break off and block a large artery in the brain. Sometimes a blood clot can arise spontaneously in a cerebral artery and lead to a stroke. Treatment might include removing the clot by inserting a catheter into the blocked artery or by using clot-busting medications to dissolve the blood clot. In most cases, rapid intervention can totally prevent permanent disability. Delay coming to the emergency room by more than 12 hours

and the ability to dissolve or remove the clot becomes impossible. If you experience a TIA, a blood clot may be identified. If the clot is not removed, it will almost certainly lead to a stroke. If no clot is identified, this means that the blockage was within a very small vessel and the body dissolved it. In this circumstance, the clot comes either from the heart or carotid artery. In this case, ultrasound studies are typically done on the carotid arteries. If a blockage of 70 percent or more is identified, surgery to open one or both arteries is recommended. The heart is also evaluated to make sure that an irregular heart rate

Seasonal Affective — From Pg. 51 why many people feel sad and depressed. Remember, depression is not a weakness, an intrinsic mental flaw or a nuisance that can be easily wished away. Baby boomers have a particularly important responsibility to understand the plight of their parents who may not feel engaged in the party preparations or can become particularly upset by family spats. During this time, make sure that everyone feels involved and useful. Most importantly, draw on the core tenets of this time to show continual love and understanding. Be welcoming and sympathetic. It will do a great deal to improve the situation. In addition to the lifestyle changes that can improve depression, there are many medical treatments to address the winter blues. SAD can be readily treated. Many physicians prescribe light therapy to improve symptoms. The patient can sit in front of a bright light, usually from a light box, for at least a half-hour per day. A second approach is to use dawn stimulation, where a light comes on as you January - February 2010

did not lead to blood clot formation. Further treatment involves compulsive management of high blood pressure, treating elevated cholesterol and using blood thinners to prevent further clots. The medications used include aspirin alone or aspirin plus dipyridamole (Aggrenox) or clopidogrel (Plavix). The most commonly identified irregular heart rate that leads to a high risk of stroke is atrial fibrillation. Here, treatment with Coumadin is required. Living a heart-healthy lifestyle and compulsively managing risk factors can significantly reduce the risk of another stroke. ∆

wake up and gets progressively brighter, mimicking the sunlight. Within a week, symptoms often improve, and research has shown that this approach can be very effective. Irrespective of the cause, therapy with antidepressants should also be considered. Here the best choices are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors, many of which are now generic and include Zoloft, Prozac and Celexa. These medications help raise the concentration of serotonin in the brain and can significantly improve mood within two weeks. Counseling, with a qualified therapist to help improve coping skills, should always complement medications. We all need to learn to deal with adversity, cope with loss, put ourselves first, learn to say no and make sure that our needs are met. Never downplay the sadness that can come at even the happiest of times. Depression is a serious medical condition that can lead to disastrous outcomes if ignored. Be understanding and seek help. ∆

Mistake Is The

Yet, American business really isn’t very good at accepting failure, let alone encouraging it as part of the learning experience. A survey for the Princeton-based consulting firm BlessingWhite finds that only 26 percent of workers feel they are regularly free to take risks in performing their jobs. Another 33 percent say they sometimes January - February 2010

think it’s OK to take risks, but 41 percent admit they don’t feel their companies will accept their failures. “Everyone wants innovation in their organization but no one wants to deal with failure,” says Christopher Rice, chief executive of the consulting firm. “Creating a culture that fosters innovation and risk-taking means that managers need to reward failure as well as success.”

64

Mother Of Success

By Michael Kinsman

with failure? smart companies. When is the last time you witnessed that? American companies just don’t like failure because it isn’t included on their business plans and because it is seen as a weakness. Yet, in an economy that is being driven by technological breakthroughs, it seems like the way we handle our failures today is more important than ever. Do you

think Thomas Edison, for instance, ever backed off experimenting because he had a string of failures in the challenges he undertook? We tend to focus on that as lost opportunity. At the same time, we are not quick to savor the benefits brought by one of those risks that paid off. The benefits would never be realized if the worker hadn’t taken up the challenge, and that means accepting that failure is possible. We all have heard stories of remarkably successful people who had made their own missteps. Albert Einstein is prized for his intellect today, yet he failed his entrance exams at the Swiss Polytechnic Institute. Before he became a famous writer, Charles Dickens once was relegated to a factory job, where he pasted labels on bottles of shoe polish. And, David Letterman once was fired from his TV weatherman’s job when he described hail as “the size of canned hams.” You’ll find lots of companies who say they encourage risk-taking and are willing to accept some failures as part of that process. That’s what they say. But let business pressures mount, let productivity slip a notch or watch short-term profit attempts erase that in a moment. Middle managers in particular seem to panic when something goes wrong. That’s because they think it will be held against them and some will go to great lengths to remove that possibility, even if their company says it has a commitment to risk-taking. Everyone is going to make mistakes on the job. But you don’t want to see them repeating the same mistakes, or making mistakes so large that it damages the finances, business prospects or integrity of the company. It is a rare company that accepts mistakes as part of their business model, yet it is also a successful company. ∆

COAT CHECK — From Pg. 28 Here are a few tips from Jenny Levin and the editors at Harper’s Bazaar magazine’s “Great Style: Best Ways to Update Your Look:” • Because a coat is your outer layer, the shape can make or break your look. A slim cut is, well, slimming. A style that’s flared from the waist down works with full skirts but can often have too much volume for curvier figures. • For the most universally flattering look, choose a piece that highlights the waist and is about knee length. Something nipped in at the waist is your best choice. If your coat is straight, cinch it with a regular, wide belt. • If you can splurge on a second or third

option, consider a luxe coat, which can double as a dress. Pair it with pumps and opaque hose, and you’re cocktail ready. • Soft-shoulder wrap styles look luxurious and are cozy. Try them over tailored silhouettes. • Capes are a fun way to mix it up. They’re voluminous enough to handle lots of layering underneath. • For a more structured style, a shinybuttoned, belted military coat is a key piece, and it works well for the office. • The longer you go, the more formal. Shorter styles are great for every day, while floor-sweeping cuts look elegant in the evening. A three-quarter length generally goes anywhere. ∆

GOT A COLD — From Pg.59 theories about how chicken soup works its medicinal magic. Chicken and other poultry meats are rich in zinc, a mineral that is essential for maintaining a strong immune system. Zinc appears to have potent powers against cold viruses, preventing them from latching onto cells in the respiratory tract and thwarting their ability to multiply. The mineral bolsters the immune system by stimulating the production of a natural virus-fighting substance called interferon. Chicken is a good source of cysteine, an amino acid that helps break up mucus and facilitates its expulsion from the body. Cysteine is also used in the repair of injured cells and tissues in the respiratory tract. If your mom’s recipe calls for lots of vegetables and a pinch of fresh garlic, the healing powers of her chicken soup are even greater. Carrots and celery are loaded with antioxidants that help protect the cells of the nose, throat and lungs from virusinduced damage. Onions are a good source of vitamin C and quercetin, a plant compound capable of killing cold and flu viruses. Scientific evidence suggests that regular quercetin

intake improves lung function and reduces the risk of acquiring respiratory diseases. Garlic has long been used as a treatment for infection. The pungent herb contains allicin, a chemical with powerful antiviral properties. The fluids in chicken soup help keep your body properly hydrated. When the mucus lining your respiratory tract is moist, it acts like sticky flypaper, trapping and destroying invading viruses. Some of the cold-fighting benefits of chicken soup have more to do with its temperature than its ingredients. The steam from a bowl of piping hot soup acts as a powerful decongestant, breaking up clogged secretions in your nose, throat and chest so they can be expelled more easily. Drinking the hot broth brings about a temporary elevation in body temperature, hindering the ability of cold viruses to multiply. A higher body temperature speeds the rate of chemical reactions so that injured cells of the respiratory tract can repair themselves more quickly. Until a cure for the common cold is found, we should all keep following our mothers’ advice: Drink plenty of fluids, get lots of rest and bring on the chicken soup. ∆
