Instead of screaming – or counting the minutes – when you’re frustrated with a date, take a deep breath, and let him (or her) teach you something. The teachers who challenged you the most taught you the most, right? The bosses who demanded more than you knew you had provoked growth, right? How else would you have landed the position you have now? And, yes, the dates (and people in general) who challenge your sanity the most are your best teachers. They are going to help you pull off the relationship of your dreams! If you're protesting that she's an airhead or he's a jerk, read on. They don't have to be well learned, refined or even willing to teach you what you need to know. All they have to do is push your hot buttons or trigger your insecurities. It's your stuff that stands between you and the relationship you want. I'm not asking you to settle for the guy who can't show up on time; I'm asking you July-August 2009

to look at why his tardiness unnerves you. Maybe you think it's disrespectful. I agree. But why does his lack of respect irritate you so much? His behavior reflects him, not you. A person keeps his word out of respect for himself, regardless of who he's meeting. So, if somebody doesn't respect himself, he's unlikely to show you respect; but it doesn't change how respectable you are. If you respect yourself, you demonstrate that, regardless of his issues (no screaming necessary). And if you don't respect yourself, this is a good time to figure that out . and do something about it. Just realizing that your reaction is rooted in self-doubt is a huge step. That's right – admit to yourself that what really infuriates you is that he doesn't seem to know how important you are! That's not the problem, though. 60

Create your own beautiful, inexpensive lighting options using candles or Christmas-light strands. Stock up on old canning jars with lids at flea markets or antique shops. ow that summer is here, it’s time to don your favorite apron, grab your tongs and fire up the grill. Before you toss the steaks and burgers on the barbie, you might want to turn down the heat.

If you’re a seasoned backyard chef, you’re probably well aware of the danger of undercooking meat. It may come as a surprise, but eating meat that has been overcooked on the grill can be just as hazardous to your health. Researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health recently July-August 2009

reported that consumption of well-done meat prepared by frying, grilling and barbecuing can create carcinogens that are not formed when the same types of meat are baked or stewed. The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 100th Annual Meeting 2009.

Earlier research has shown that consuming any type of meat that is overcooked, burnt or charred can increase the risk of developing cancer of the breast, colon, stomach and prostate. High-temperature cooking can transform amino acids and other natural substances in meat into heterocyclic amines (HCAs) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; compounds that are known to cause cancer in laboratory animals. You can reduce HCA formation in the meat you prepare by lowering the cooking temperature. Whether you grill, pan-fry or oven-roast meats, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to cook at temperatures below 325 degrees, the surface temperature at which HCAs begin to form. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interested in reducing HCA formation in grilled foods, you can start by microwaving meat for a few minutes at a medium setting and patting the meat dry ahead of time. e all know that whether it’s a great pair of short “Daisy Dukes” cutoffs layered over swimsuits or worn-out boot-legs with flip-flops, our jeans make a powerful fashion statement.

But we all have fit issues, right? You can buy all the latest “it” jeans -- but if they don’t really do the rear view and the front view justice, then why should it matter? After all, many of us live in denim. “For so many of us, pants are a daily staple,” says Paula Reed, a London style guru who wrote the book on all things: “Style Clinic -- How to Look Fabulous All the time, at Any Age, for Any Occasion.” “We work, party, chill, dance, meet and travel in them,” Reed says. “Get the fit that works and they can be your best friend in your wardrobe -- the kind that supports you no matter what you want to be. Here are some tips from Reed on how to buy jeans that provide the perfect fit for your figure: • Choose classic or relaxed fits if you have voluptuous curves. They’ll give you ease and flattery in the bottom area without being big all over. • Get a pair that sits on your hips rather than your waist.

• Concentrate on getting the waist and leg proportion just right. Get it wrong and you make your bottom look bigger. The waistband should sit just below your waist’s natural curve and the leg needs to skim your natural shape. A waist-cinching shape with a lot of fabric in the leg is about the worst thing you can do for your figure. • No matter what kind of jeans you buy, avoid too-tight legs and small or widelyspaced back pockets. These elements all add width. • Pick stretch jeans if you are curvy with a small waist. Straight, tight cuts were made for you. Low-riders are the most flattering. A gentle flare will balance your hip curve. Be warned: High-waisted jeans will make your behind look disproportionately large. • Find stretch jeans but not second-skin tight jeans, if slim on the bottom. Go for a slim leg. Free radical-induced damage, known as oxidative damage, contributes to the aging process and to the development of disease. In recent years, blueberries have been elevated to the status of brain food. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that the colorful fruit can help prevent - and even reverse - some age-related memory decline. When researchers from the University of Reading in Pennsylvania and Peninsula Medical School in England supplemented ratsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; regular diets with blueberries, they noted dramatic changes in the rodentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; cognitive function. Animals treated with blueberries exhibited an 83 percent im

provement on tests of memory within three weeks, and the improvement was maintained for the remainder of the 12week study. Other studies have yielded similar results. Scientists at Tufts University in Boston found that when old rats were fed diets containing antioxidant-rich blueberry extracts for a period of just two months, they showed dramatic reversals of age-related declines in both mental and physical performance. Compared to untreated elderly rats, those given blueberry extracts scored highest on tests designed to measure balance and coordination. The blueberry-treated rodents also outperformed their untreated counterparts in terms of brain function and memory. Ask the Ophthalmologist DO YOU HAVE A CATARACT? Q. What is a cataract?

A. The eye has a natural, clear lens behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) which

focuses light on the retina. With age or certain medical conditions, the lens becomes cloudy and slowly interferes with vision. It is then called a cataract. Once the symptoms affect your lifestyle, it may be time to have cataract surgery.

Q. What does cataract surgery entail?

A. In cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed with ultrasound (known as phacoemulsification) and replaced with a clear lens implant.

Q. Why do I see some patients with a big patch after surgery, and some without?

A. The newest cataract surgery technique uses ‘topical’ anesthesia (eye drops) and does

not require an injection of anesthetic behind the eye. With this type of surgery, recovery can be in a few hours, with minimal activity restrictions, and without necessitating a full patch.

Q. Will I need glasses after the surgery?

A. The traditional implant is a single focus lens that generally allows for clear distance

vision, but requires glasses for reading. Also, if astigmatism is present and not treated, glasses will be needed following surgery.

Q. Are there new implants that can help get rid of reading glasses?

A. The FDA has approved a new category of elective implants called presbyopia-correcting

lenses. They are designed to restore distance and near vision, minimizing the need for any glasses after surgery. The multifocal implants include the Alcon ReStor©, AMO ReZoom©, and AMO TECNIS© Multifocal. In addition, an accommodative lens -- the Crystalens HD©, is a single focus implant that can flex in the eye, mimicking the movement of the natural lens. By choosing one of these newer implants, you may be able to greatly diminish your need for glasses. While Medicare and private insurance cover cataract surgery with traditional monofocal implants, they do not cover the upgrade cost for the newer presbyopia-correcting lenses.

Q. What if I have astigmatism and need cataract surgery?

A. Astigmatism is a condition where the shape of the eye is more curved in one direction

than the rest, think egg-shaped versus round. Astigmatism is treated with glasses, contact lenses, or more permanently with laser corneal refractive surgery (i.e. LASIK or PRK). Recently, astigmatism correcting implants, called Toric IOLs became available for use during cataract surgery. These can permanently treat astigmatism and minimize the need for distance glasses. Your eye surgeon must determine if you are a good candidate for any of these newer implants based on the health of your eye, refractive measurements, and other parameters. Lens implants mentioned above are relatively new, and not all cataract surgeons are trained to implant them. Make sure your eye surgeon has plenty of experience with the lenses and is prepared to deal with any problems that could arise.

Decongestants, appetite suppressants, antihistamines and antidepressants can be dehydrating. “People can vary in their response to these medicines,” Stuhr says. “If you’re taking any of these, listen to your body and don’t push it.”

ne Friday afternoon, rumors were running rampant around my office that our company was about to be taken over by another and that an announcement was coming at any time.

The rumors started quietly and spread quickly. Within a couple of hours, the rumors were more like pronouncements and everybody was watching the clock tick away. My workplace was paralyzed. By chance, I ran into the company’s executive vice president in the coffee room. I asked him about the rumors. “No truth whatsoever,” he said. I explained that paralysis that existed in the building and asked if he couldn’t do something to clear the air. Fifteen minutes later, notes were being pinned up on bulletin boards that explicitly said no sale or merger was happening, nor had that been discussed. “Yeah, like we are supposed to believe that,” a co-worker said within seconds of reading the memo. I knew right then that my good deed was thwarted. The rumor had taken on its own life and it would have to die in its own time. Sadly, incidents like this happen in every workplace from time from time. Whether they are rooted in truth or simple fabrications, gossip on the job can be debilitating. We used to gather at the water cooler to share gossip. Now we simply message co-workers over their computers. Almost all of us participate in this to some degree, although clearly some of us seem to be much worse offenders than the rest. This is a destructive dynamic in the workplace. ally need, to talk about what’s going on around them, but when does it cease to be useful, crossing the line from information sharing to outright gossip? That’s simple. When gossip gets malicious, personal or so pervasive that it starts interfering with getting the job done. I read about a company that is forbidding its employees to gossip and made this one of its corporate values. This is a silly notion when you are dealing with human beings. Until you've dumped your insecurities, they keep getting triggered by the next one who gets close enough. You have as many opportunities as you need to heal what ails you. So, next time you feel like screaming, instead of blaming the one who pushed your hot buttons, look at what's behind the buttons. No need to worry about his bad manners or her attitude; instead, get the lesson you need to land the relationship you want. ∆

Bulgaria The cruise officially starts in Rousse, surnamed “little Vienna” for its architectural style and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The heart of the city is a central pedestrian street lined with a plethora of stores and boutiques. A shore excursion takes us to Varna on the Black Sea, a couple of hours drive from Rousse. We pass by acres of yellow canola fields, rolling hills and picturesque villages. Varna, now a popular seaside resort was once an important Hellenistic era port. The archeological museum houses the world’s oldest gold treasures, found in burial sites dating back 6,000 years. The tour concludes with a sail on the Black Sea and lunch in a quaint restaurant. Next stop is Vidin, a dormant town on the Danube, once a Roman outpost, an Ottoman fortress and a Bulgarian capital. We stop at Baba Vida, a stone fortification built between the 10th and 14th centuries on the ruins of a previous Roman outpost. A short ride takes us to the multicolored Belogradchick Rocks and the Fortress of Belogradchick, built by the Ottomans in the early 1800s. The ramparts, rising between red rock outcrops make this a picture perfect photo op. The ship continues upriver toward the Iron Gates, a huge dam, that coaxes electric power out of the mighty Danube and tames it into a slow moving and peaceful waterway. As we cross the gorge the river widens

into a lake and we arrive in Serbia.

Serbia

Once a part of Yugoslavia, Serbia is now an independent nation still recuperating from the recent Balkan wars. The Danube passes by quaint villages, stunning scenery, islands, villages and green forests. We stop in Kostolak, once called Viminacium, a favorite vacation spot of the Romans between the 1st and 3rd centuries. We visit the excavated ruins of the Roman baths and cemetery, where we descend into subterranean graves for an inside view of frescoes that decorated the tombs of Roman dignitaries. Next port is Belgrade, located at the confluence of Sava River and the Danube. The history of the town spans the Celtics, Romans, Huns, Turks, and Byzantine empires. It witnessed battles and conflicts as recent as the 1990 bombings by NATO forces. We visit the city fortress, a site that withstood bloody battles from the Roman days to World Wars I and II. The tour continues along wide boulevards where imposing buildings stand next to structures destroyed during the recent war. The city center is a vibrant shopping area lined with elegant boutiques and sidewalk cafés. It is hard to believe that only a decade ago this area was a Red Cross relief station delivering humanitarian aid to a starving population. We conclude with a visit to Tito’s tomb

and memorial. Tito, once the benevolent dictator of Yugoslavia, is still revered by many who fondly remember their personal prosperity, while forgetting the heavy price paid by dissidents. Croatia Next, we anchor in Vukovar, a city dating back 2,000 years. In 1991, this was the first city of Croatia attacked and seiged by Serbian/Yugoslav forces. Currently, mine fields are still being cleared, and the city is undergoing reconstruction. Nearby, in the village of Osijeck we are divided in small groups and have lunch with a local host family, for a peek into their rural life. We toast our new friends with home made plum brandy. Hungary The Danube divides the city of Budapest into Buda, a residential hilly side, and Pest the commercial hub. In Buda, we visit the ornate St. Matyas church, roam the ancient streets, and stop at Fisherman’s Bastion for panoramic city views. The tour continues through Pest passing by the Neo-Gothic Parliament Building, picturesque bridges, majestic buildings, and the expansive Hero’s Square. Later, we stroll along the fashionable shopping area and visit the synagogue and the attached holocaust memorial. Slovakia The country of Czechoslovakia split Belgrade – City Center.

Austria The River Princess docks in a Vienna suburb, a short subway ride from the center. Vienna is a romantic city, steeped in history, music, and elegant architecture. The city tour starts with a visit to Mozart’s residence, where he composed the Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and A Little Night Music. We travel around Ringstrasse and view the Parliament building, the famous Opera, and St. Michael Square. The afternoon is free for a leisurely exploration of this imperial city. We visit the Hoffburg palace, meander along picturesque cobblestone streets, and sample the famous Sacher Tort at a sidewalk café. We soak in the cosmopolitan atmosphere, and, over a cup of Viennese coffee, plan our next river cruise.
