Office Ergonomic? By R.J. Ignelzi
I
f you’re one of the more than 20 million American adults logging long hours at your home’s work station, chances are you’re feeling the pain. Sitting at a poorly designed work space with an unsupportive chair, glaring computer monitor and phone receiver wedged into your neck can easily lead to musculoskeletal disorders, repetitive stress injuries and fatigue. Not to mention a lack of productivity and lousy attitude. HOME-WORK ASSIGNMENT While it’s routine for large businesses to make office work spaces functional and ergonomically correct, homebound workers are often left to their own devices. That can mean anything from working at the kitchen table to balancing a laptop on the edge of the bed.

Needs For Life
By Jan Denise
R
elationships make for a happy, fulfilling life or a miserable existence. So, why didn’t our parents sit us down early on and teach us to do relationships well? If you think about their relationships, the answer might be painfully obvious.
There are few people doing relationships well. Some avoid the ugliness by repressing what’s felt, controlling what’s expressed and avoiding confrontation. Others live in an ongoing power struggle. How can we be one of the few who enjoy fruitful and satisfying relationships — at home, work, the health club, everywhere? One of the first things we have to do is give up the knee-jerk reaction to blame somebody else for our existing relationships. You decide how to respond to whatever is thrown at you; and in doing so, you determine to a large extent both the nature and the quality of your
relationships. We all have six basic needs that are the “secret buttons” for triggering feelings of love, connection and gratitude, says Cloe Madanes, author of “Relationship Breakthrough.” 1) Certainty/Comfort: We want to feel safe, avoid pain and feel comfortable in our environment and our relationships. 2) Variety/Uncertainty: Variety and challenges exercise our bodies and minds. All of us need some form of variety in life through new people, hobbies and pastimes. 17

Grand Opening KEYBOARD Ergonomic keyboards are available but have not been proved to lessen or alleviate hand and wrist problems. Proper positioning: When using a mouse or keyboard, keep your elbows at an angle of 90 degrees to 110 degrees; your hands should be at elbow height or slightly lower. Your forearms, wrists and hands should be in a straight line. The keyboard should be at a comfortable distance, not so far away that you have to reach out to touch the keys. When typing, relax your shoulders with elbows close to your sides, not flared out. When using a mouse, make sure your wrist is straight, not bent to either side, and don’t grip it too tightly. If you find that using a mouse strains the muscles in your hand, try using an alternate input device like a trackball or a touch pad. Rest the meaty part of your hands, not your wrists, on a wrist rest, if you use one. Try not to keep your hands on a wrist rest for an extended period because you can cut off circulation.

Spring Cleaning By Sarah Welch and Alicia Rockmore
S
pring cleaning is probably the last thing you want to think about or do, but we think you can get it done faster and more efficiently with one of our favorite principles: delegation.
This year you can cross over into family-workload allocation by sending your cleaning troops into battle with an age-appropriate arsenal. When you ask your children, husband and live-in grandmother for springcleaning help, suppress the urge to re-do the tasks that aren’t done “perfectly” or even right. In doing so, you’re sending a message that it doesn’t matter if they do the task or not because you’re going to do it anyway. Worse, you are wasting even more of your scarce time. When you delegate, you have to relinquish control of the task and be satisfied with the outcome, even if the DVDs are not in alphabetical order. Trust us: As Type A personalities, we know it can be hard not to want to reorganize the dresser when your 7-year-old puts away her clothes in poorly folded order. But if you can show her how to put March - April 2010

her clothes away nicely once and let her on her own, you’ll both feel less overwhelmed when cleaning. We’ve broken out spring-cleaning tasks that any family member age 2 and up can tackle. Ages 2-5 Dusting. Put a feather duster in a child’s hand and he or she will have a blast. Keep the child’s range of dusting limited to items he or she can reach but can’t break. Watering and weeding outdoor plants. Many times spring cleaning also includes spring gardening, and children flock to dirt. It’s also a great way to teach them about plants and how they grow. Washing the car. Sarah’s 2-year-old son, Will, demonstrated an affinity for cleaning the snow off the car this winter, which now translates to cleaning the dirt off the
car. We like to let him scrub the tires with a giant sponge, and he’s also a big fan of spraying the hose. Under the bed/couches. Make it a scavenger-hunt challenge to have the kids gather all of the loose toys from underneath beds, couches, tables, etc., and place the items they find in a bin in the center of the room. Ages 6-10 More capable and focused when given directions, those in this age group can handle larger and more difficult tasks. Just remember that their attention spans will only be able to handle one or two tasks a day. Closet cleanout. Take all toys out of the closet and place them on the bed or floor. Then have the kids organize these items into piles of “Keep,” “Donate” and 49

Is there a way to compare the value of a private college versus a public university? The cost difference can be substantial. A year at a private school can easily top $50,000, while a year at one of the publiclyfunded universities in a student’s home state can be less than half that — and sometimes considerably less. There is no question that college is an investment in a child’s future. But it’s not March - April 2010
the kind of investment where you can easily calculate a rate of return or even measure the value in any rigorous or analytical way. I think it would be somewhat foolish, for example, to try to figure out if a degree from Harvard translates into better earnings power. When it comes to determining earning potential, I believe that other factors are much more important than where someone goes to college — things like ambition, work ethic and career

Organizing A Slumber Party With Your Sanity Intact By Sarah Welch And Alicia Rockmore
A
slumber party is a rite of passage for preteens. What could be better than hanging out with a group of your best friends, sleeping in sleeping bags on the floor, having pillow fights and staying up late playing with the Ouija board?
March - April 2010
But for parents, sleepovers are another story altogether. Hosting one usually means you’ll get to enjoy a relatively sleepless night with more than a few midnight tours as the noise and fun police. But the more you’re prepared, the less stressful it will be. Here are some useful tips. When organizing a sleepover at your house, be prepared for all sorts of situations. Keep in mind that each kid is different, so in order to keep chaos to a minimum, your goal is to make each one feel as cozy as possible. Explain to your own 26
child that being a good host/hostess means treating everyone nicely, even if they go home halfway through the night. Have sufficient lighting in the sleep area and hallways that lead to the bathroom. Buy extra underwear and have a spare change of pajamas just in case of an “accident.” Get any important information from their parents during drop-off. It’s always nice to know if Jane would like to call Mommy before bedtime or that Brian can’t sleep without a nightlight. For older kids, sleep with one eye open and make the rules
clear right off the bat. If you know your neighbors are sensitive to loud music, give the kids a time that they must be indoors. Their safety should be your No. 1 concern, and their parents trust you to be the adult in the house, even if it means you have to be the uncool parent. Speaking of safety, while no parent wants a guest to break an arm while playing on Johnny’s trampoline, it’s imperative that you plan for the worst. Get at least two emergency contact numbers for each child and “Permission to Treat” 67 27

ith spring around the corner we wonder what the next BIG fashion thing is going to be...
One online company is leading the way in providing trend “philosophies” for creative professionals in the fashion and style industries: www.stylesight.com. Stylesight is headquartered in New York, with a forecasting atelier in Paris and satellite offices stationed in style capitals spanning the globe. Sharon Graubard, senior vice president of trend analysis, makes it her job to predict all the fashion news for upcoming seasons. Here are some of her insights for spring 2010 to get us motivated in a positive direction: • Spring ‘10 will express an optimistic outlook, she says. “In the current economic climate, we move away from fleeting trends and take a more thoughtful approach to fashion. his spring add some romance to your wardrobe. It’s the perfect time of the year to flirt a little bit with your clothes. Send a message of love to your inner style diva.
A ruffle here, a strappy sandal there, and you can be transformed into a ravishing romantic. Here are a few essentials to give your wardrobe a dose of stylish romance, even if your favorite go-to outfit is jeans and a T-shirt: Anything with ruffles They’re a trendy must-have this spring, and you’ll find ruffles cascading down shirts, skirts and soft cardigan sweaters. Anything that gives a flash of flutter can only make you feel a little more feminine.

A swirly skirt Think fluid fabrics like chiffon, rayon or silk in a flippy style that hits above the knee. A-lines are always figure-flattering, but short pencil skirts can also add that sexy feel to your wardrobe. 30
Romantic? By Sharon Mosley
A wrap dress Slinky is the name of the game for this classic popularized by Diane Von Furstenberg years ago. In solid black or red jersey, it’s always a winner; in geometric or floral prints, it’s not so serious.

off great accessories, such as an attentiongetting statement necklace. Sequined tanks A little bit of sparkle goes a long way. Anything lace Lace is another fabric that has always had romantic connotations. Whether you wear it in a top layered over a camisole or on a pair of slip-on mules, it hints of sophisticated glamour with an air of mystery that any drama queen would love. Animal prints Grrrrrr ... these still roar when it comes to choosing a foxy look. Often you only need a touch of the feline print -- a patent animal-print pump, faux fur cuffs on a sweater or a chic cheetah clutch -- to pull off a stylish look with more fashion flair. A sheer blouse The perfect layering piece for a romantic wardrobe, the transparent chiffons, organzas or georgettes give you lots of options. Add some ruffles, and you have double trouble.
Silk flowers The big and bold necklace may be a hit on the fashion trend scene this year, but there are a few other “late bloomers” that are growing in popularity out there, too. One large silk flower, in a pretty lilac or rose color pinned onto a lapel or even a strand of pearls, can really turn you into a modern Victorian. Heels Whether it’s a pair of sky-high gladiator sandals or a modest pair of kitten heel slides, dress your shoe wardrobe up with something other than flats. Skip the clunky clogs that are hitting the stores this spring. Sexy stockings Ooh, la, la. Teamed with long tunic tops or short skirts, sheer hosiery or patterned tights can add that extra dose of romance to any outfit. Try them in bright colors for even more pizzazz. Stones that sparkle They may hang from your ears or decorate your fingers, but limit it to one major piece of bling. ∆
SPRING FASHION PHILOSOPHY 102— From Pg. 29 will invest in high-quality pieces that last, hard-edged facet motifs, big placed landwhether because they are timeless clas- scapes and subtle texture effects. Both classics and collectibles have cobwebs with big openings and loose crochet techniques. Sheer overlays will have staying power.” an airy, crystalline quality.” • Color will communicate an alternative • Bohemian lifestyles will also continue point of view, according to Graubard, the way wearing black used to. “There will to impact fashion. The word “Bohemian,” be beautiful, sophisticated combinations says Graubard, doesn’t just refer to ecof color, even interesting neutrals like centric ethnic-mix looks popularized by cosmetic shades working against khakis ‘60s hippies, although that era continues and whites,” she says. “Prints will be to inspire designers. “We will also see a artist-influenced, with painterly blurs, re-exploration of ‘90s grunge for street March - April 2010

looks, with casual plaid shirts, thermal underwear pieces and freeform layering of print and pattern.”
Fine Italian Menswear
• Another Bohemian direction turning up on the streets is the Beatnik look, notes Graubard, with girls wearing short pixieish hairstyles, rolled-up jeans or straight skirts, and plenty of black eyeliner -- very artsy and intellectual, similar to how girls dressed in Paris or Greenwich Village in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s. “Designers have been picking up on this look a bit on recent runways, and it may influence what we will be seeing for spring 2010.”

• With fast, throwaway fashion becoming less important, there is a shift in interest toward clothing itself. According to Graubard, silhouette and tailoring take center stage. “Fall’s defined shoulders will continue, as will structured jackets and hourglass shapes,” she says. “Draping, twisting and ruching are other ways to shape garments, especially knits. It’s almost like couture techniques will be applied to threadbare tees and jersey dresses. Heathered sweatpants will become elegant enough to wear with elongated sleeveless blazers or with supple leather jackets. “These hard and soft elements will be worn at the same time, in new, modernist ensembles. Garments begin to resemble sculpture for the body, with volume, artisanal techniques and experimental fabrics bringing fashion into the future.” ∆

Jeans
Dos And For By Sharon Mosley
I
f you’ve never worn jeans, then this is the year to make a new resolution: Find a pair of these “doit-all” fashion staples and give them your own signature style. Forget your age. Forget your size. There’s a jean for everyone and practically every occasion. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when wearing denim this year:
Skinny jeans from the spring Converse One Star collection. March - April 2010
• Do buy jeans that fit. The stiff denim jeans are a thing of the past. With new stretch fabric innovations, there’s a pair of jeans to fit even the curviest of figures. You may have to try on several different sizes in different labels, but don’t give up. There is the perfect pair out there. Ask for help from a knowledgeable salesperson. 34

Then when you do find a brand you like, stock up! • Don’t get stuck wearing the infamous “Mom” jeans. You can win the battle of the bulge without sacrificing style and without spilling out of the top of your jeans into the dreaded “muffin top,” which has plagued many women for years. Look for jeans with waistlines that hit right below the bellybutton for the most flattering silhouette.

• Do consider cut. The skinny jean is still a big fashion trend, but a boot cut is usually more flattering for most body types. And if you do have larger thighs, a trouser style may be your best bet.
New Location
• Don’t stick to just one style. Try to incorporate a variety of silhouettes into your wardrobe. You may have one favorite, but jeans can be your best friend when it comes to building a basic wardrobe. This spring, cropped denim is a big trend for the warmer months ahead.
Designer Bridal Gowns
• Do think about shoes. The right shoes or boots can make or break a pair of jeans. Generally speaking, your jeans should cover the heels of your shoes and hit right on top of the front of your shoe. If you need to get them hemmed, have them altered to match the original hem stitching. 44

hen purchasing a home you cannot afford to pass on the home inspection. If you decide to do it yourself, you may not find major defects that would be obvious to an experienced home inspector. Depending on where you live, a home inspection should cost around $300, but the savings reaped from the inspection report is often in the thousands of dollars. Home inspection is the purchaser’s last chance to ask the seller to correct the major defects listed in the report. After taking possession of the home, the seller is out of the picture, even if you later discover you need a new furnace or an upgrade of the

electrical system . Invest the $300. You might also consider that a DIY inspection may not be accepted by the seller as an accurate description of what needs to be done. Hiring a professional home inspector, who can explain what the defects are and how they should be repaired, leaves little room for disagreement. You should also consider that a professional home inspector is unbiased

and is disconnected from the emotional issues associated with purchasing the home. The home inspector gets paid for his services whether or not you follow through with the purchase and repairs of the home. If you are determined to do the inspection yourself, here are several things to look for:
1.
Grading and drainage. Make sure the home’s foundation sits high and dry. The yard and rain gutters should drain away from the foundation for a least 10 feet.
2.
Any and all electrical wiring should be either out of reach (6 feet 6 inches above the floor) or the wiring should be in a protective conduit.
3.
Metal flue pipes must have a 1-inch clearance to combustibles. There should be a clearance where the

pipe passes through the drywall ceiling or through the wood-roof sheathing. The flue pipes must also have a continuous rise from the appliance to the main chimney connection. Rusted or damaged flues need to be replaced.
4.
Loose toilet bowls and stopped up sink drains. Operate all plumbing fixtures for 10 to 20 minutes to make sure all drain lines are working, and at the same time check for leaks under the fixture’s cabinets and in the basement or crawl space.
5.
Purchase an outlet circuit tester and check each and every outlet you can reach. You will be checking for “open grounds and reversed polarity” at the outlets. Test and reset every GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) in the home.
6.
Operate all appliances (furnace, dishwasher, range, etc. Do not operate an air conditioner when the outside temperature is below 60 F).
7.
Operate the garage-door opener and check the auto reverse features and the photo cells to make sure the door automatically opens if there is an obstruction in its path.
8.
Natural gas and LP gas pipes require a sediment trap, also known as a dirt trap or a drip leg, on each gas pipe just before the pipe connects to the gas appliance’s main gas valve. Replace any and all copper gas pipe.
9.
Stairways and handrails. Make sure all stair risers are the same height (seven to eight inches) and that stair treads are at least 9 to 10 inches deep. Where there are three or more steps, a handrail is required for safety. Longer handrails and guardrails also require baluster posts set at a minimum of four to six inches apart to keep children from slipping through the railings.
10.
Tempered safety glass. Windows over bathtubs, shower doors,

patio and French doors and larger windows that are easily accessible should be tempered or protected against accidental human impact. The glass should be marked “tempered” in one corner of each piece of glass. While these are just a portion of the components of the home, a professional home inspector will check many more details too numerous to list and has a trained eye to spot problems the DIY’er may not be able to identify. ∆ JEANS RULE — From Pg. 35 You will probably find that you will wear different lengths with different shoes — I have a special pair for flats and another pair for heels. • Do dress your jeans up. Jeans are one of the most versatile basics you can have in your wardrobe. When buying them, think about your lifestyle and buy accordingly: a dressier pair for the office; a more casual pair for the weekends. Darker washes are preferable for dressier occasions and for work. • Don’t go baggy. There’s nothing worse than a slouchy pair of jeans that hang off your body. You may have broken them in years ago, and they’re the softest things in your closet. But it’s time to get rid of them. Stick to wearing jeans that are sleeker and chicer! You don’t have to go tight, but you do need to remember to buy jeans that fit and may even be a little small for you, since most jeans have a tendency to stretch as you wear them. • Do get creative. Jeans are the perfect “base” for adding some oomph to your fashion outlook. Experiment with different “trends” and revamp your whole wardrobe. Tuck your skinny jeans into knee-high boots, or jazz up your cropped denims with a pair of strappy sandals. The more creative you get, the more you’ll see how you couldn’t imagine life without your favorite pair of jeans. ∆

abric window treatments play a major role in home decorating. They add style, warmth, richness, and a finishing touch to any room. Choose from a large variety of gorgeous fabrics, trims and accents to achieve that perfect look. Here are a few of my favorite fabric window treatments, plus some “how to” tips: FLAT-PANEL AND PINCH-PLEAT DRAPES Panels have to be my all-time-favorite window treatment. I love how simple drapes frame a window, adding a whisper of softness without overwhelming the view. The first step is to decide on the panel length that works best for your lifestyle and room. If you want to open and close your curtains daily, finish the drapes 1/2 inch above the floor. For a softer, fuller feel, let them break like a man’s trouser, finishing them 1 or 2 inches longer. For a truly luxurious look, let them puddle between 5 to 12 inches on the floor. Regarding width, the current trend is to hang the panels on the outside edges of the window so all the window glass is exposed. To give them enough fullness, make the panels two and a half times the width of the window. A lined, regular-weight drapery treatment occupies one-third of the total rod, so if you want the panels to stack completely off the window, make the curtain rod a third longer than the width of the window. Finally, refuse to skimp on your curtain lining. Using the
47
Hi Class Living
right lining will make your drapes look professional and beautiful. Be sure to use only liner that is the same kind of fiber as the face fabric, whether it’s a natural fiber like silk or a synthetic fiber like polyester. Otherwise, the face fabric and liner will hang differently. Use blackout fabric to prevent the sunlight from shining through the face fabric, detracting from its beauty and causing sun damage. To achieve the best finished look, also use interlining, like flannel, between your face fabric and back lining. You’ll be amazed by the extra body and beauty you get when you include this extra layer. ROMAN SHADES Roman shades are a great pick for people who have gorgeous wood molding they want to show off. I love how these tailored shades give you a custom, sleek appearance, offer total privacy and sun protection, and insulate against drafts. CORNICES Get ready, because cornices are back, and right now people are reinventing this classic window treatment in dozens of interesting ways. For instance, my colleague did a gorgeous cornice and drapery treatment for her husband’s study. She started the room by covering the walls in a Burberrystyle plaid featuring camel, black, cream and red. Then she covered padded cornices with black wool fabric, piped them in red and put a monogram at the center of each cornice using red thread. She completed the treatment with long, lush drapes in a black-and-cream toile fabric featuring a hunting scene. The finished look was smart, stylish, with a hint of fun. CAFE CURTAINS For smaller windows, like those above your kitchen sink, my favorite treatment is the ever-popular, singularly romantic cafe curtain. Hang them about two-thirds the way up the window so plenty of sunlight can stream in, yet you have a bit of privacy. ∆ March - April 2010

SPRING CLEANING — From Pg. 21 “Throw Out.” Laundry duty. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to teach your gradeschool-age children how to fold towels and clothing, and possibly even how to run the dryer. If you feel they aren’t as coordinated with folding, try a Debbie Flip-N-Fold (www.hsn.com), which basically does all of the folding for you. Cleaning out the pantry. As long as your kids can read dates, this one is ideal for getting rid of any food that has expired. Make sure when you put the items back into the pantry you use the FIFO (First In First Out) method and put the items close to expiring in the front. Washing out pet dishes, cages, etc. Your kids probably begged you to get a pet and it’s an important part of being a pet owner for the children to learn to be responsible “pet siblings.” Age 11 and Up By age 11, most children are able to do a large amount of cleaning tasks. Just keep them away from any tasks that require strong chemicals and be sure they wear gloves if scrubbing floors, walls or the bathroom. Floor, Wall, and Bathroom Scrubbing. The shower, the bathtub, the sinks, the windows, wood floors – whatever needs scrubbed, they can handle. Closet cleaning. Just like the younger group, a closet cleanout of clothing is important and they are old enough to organize their whole closet alone. Vacuuming. Vacuuming can be fun. Give a child in this age bracket the responsibility of vacuuming “special” places such as the car, between the couch cushions and under tables and couches. The refrigerator. Help them take everything out of the entire fridge and wipe down every shelf they can reach. Produced by Lea Furniture in association with Nickelodeon, the My Room furniture featuring the two-dimensional celebrities SpongeBob, Go Diego Go and Dora the Explorer was rolled out during the Fall International Home Furnishings Market and will be in retail stores by spring. The furniture comes in three distinct groups designed for children in three age groups: Nick for 3-7 years old, TweenNick for 8-11 and TeenNick. a stow-away storage staircase in which each step is a drawer. Tents are part of the package with the Adventure Loft set. The Grow With Me play table and desk adjust in height from 20 to 30 inches. The furniture is made to grow with the child whatever age he enters the market. The Nick line includes colorful seating such as the Flippin’ Out chaise and the Chillin’ Out love seat. TweenNick fans can get a serpentineshaped six-drawer chest and the Rollin’ chair for gaming. All of it is interchange-

able depending on taste. Reversible drawer and bed panels flip from plain to graphics ensuring Nickelodeon’s green slime oozes from the chest of drawers and glows in the dark. But the panels can be switched to plain once children outgrow the glow. For teens, double beds are surrounded by two walls of cubbies and shelves -- great for books and magazines, trophies and trinkets or a small-screen TV. The Suite bed is like a mini-apartment. A desk, book
shelves and a small-scale television stand on casters finish off the room. TeenNick also has a Studio Loft bed and something called The Flat. The Flat bed is set with a pair of wall-mounted nightstands with cantilevered drawers. It has a very sleek European look. With this stuff populating their private space you won’t have any trouble sending them to their room. So gone are the days when it was a punishment. Prepare to build a dungeon. ∆

Diseases By Rallie McAllister, M.D.
The juice is packed with beneficial plant substances called flavonoids. In the body, flavonoids act as powerful antioxidants that are capable of disarming diseasecausing free radicals. Free radical damage to cells and tissues is known to play a leading role in the development of dozens of age-related ailments, including heart disease, Alzheimer ’s, arthritis and even cancer. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that pomegranate juice may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of these debilitating conditions. While most plant foods are good sources of antioxidants, pomegranates are especially rich in the disease-fighting compounds. Ounce for ounce, pomegranate juice contains higher levels of antioxidants than green tea, red wine, and many fruits and vegetables. The results of a new study published in the January issue of Cancer Prevention Research suggest that natural compounds in pomegranate juice, called ellagitannins, may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer. Scientists at the Breast Cancer Research Program at City of Hope in Duarte, Calif., found that these compounds prevented the proliferation of breast cancer cells and inhibited the growth of estrogenresponsive tumors. Numerous studies have demonstrated

the power of the pomegranate to slow the progression of prostate cancer. In laboratory tests, extracts of the fruit triggered prostate cancer cells to undergo apoptosis, a type of cellular self-destruction. The results of human trials are equally promising. In a study of men with prostate cancer, researchers at the University of California found that men who drank 8 ounces of the juice daily experienced significantly slower rates of cancer progression compared to men who drank a placebo. Scientists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison reported that consumption of pomegranate juice could reduce the growth and spread of cancer cells in the lung -- or might even prevent the development of lung cancer in the first place. The investigators found that mice treated with pomegranate extracts in their drinking water had smaller and slower-growing lung tumors than untreated rodents. In similar studies, extracts of the fruit have been found to thwart the growth and spread of cancer cells in the colon and skin. Some experts predict that these compounds will one day serve as important components in many cancer treatment regimens. A daily dose of pomegranate juice might also help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The results of a study conducted at Loma Linda University showed that drinking a glass of the juice each day can reduce the buildup of beta amyloid in the brain by half. Beta amyloid is a sticky, problematic protein that contributes to Alzheimer’s by creating non-functioning areas in the brain called neuritic plaques. Reporting in the medical journal Neurobiology of Disease, the Loma Linda researchers suggested that pomegranate juice may work as well as some prescription drugs to prevent the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The juice may also have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries. Researchers at the University of Naples in Italy demonstrated March - April 2010
that drinking the juice can help prevent cholesterol plaques from forming on artery walls, potentially reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. For folks who want to protect their joints from the ravaging effects of osteoarthritis, a little juice may go a long way. Scientists at Case Western Reserve University proved that pomegranate-derived compounds effectively block the action of destructive enzymes in human cartilage cells, dramatically slowing the progression of the disease. Researchers in Japan found that extracts of the fruit stimulated bone turnover and increased bone mineral density in laboratory animals. Based on their findings, the scientists concluded that these compounds could help prevent bone loss due to osteoporosis in menopausal women. The results of a 10-week pilot study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research suggest that consumption of pomegranate juice may be useful in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. Among men who drank 8 ounces of the juice daily, 47 percent reported significant improvements in symptoms. Pomegranate juice is tart and tangy, and it may take some time to develop a taste for it. But when you consider all its health benefits, you’ll undoubtedly find it one of the sweetest anti-aging elixirs available. ∆ SPRING CLEANING — From Pg. 49 heavy boxes. Here are some fitness tips:
W
hen it comes to living a healthier, happier lifestyle, it’s a step-by-step process. Sometimes it’s even two steps forward, one step back. Every day is a new opportunity to start all over again, eating smarter, exercising more, stressing less because finally you decided to take matters of health and wellness into your own hands. March - April 2010
WHEN IN TRAFFIC, SQUEEZE Body awareness is a marvelous thing. Take your butt, for instance. If you let nature take her course, over time, one day, you will notice it sagging, as in, your tail is dragging. Here’s what you need to know: It doesn’t have to be that way. You can stay strong and flexible well into your senior years – maybe beyond! – if you decide to make the effort. Butt muscles, for instance, are made for squeezing, and the more you engage them, the longer they appear perky. Bottom line? Next time you’re in traffic waiting for the light to change, or idling at your computer as it takes a few moments to load, use that time to build a stronger, firmer butt and draw energy to your core. Work those glutes! The maximus, the minimus and the medius! Shift your attention to the base of your spine, and squeeze your glutes as though you were pushing a golden light up your spine, and all the way out the crown of your head. Hold that squeeze and that energizing visualization for a count of 10. Relax and repeat, whenever you can, for the rest of your life. NEW SLANT ON THE TREADMILL GAME Walking or running on a strong, steady treadmill is one of the most popular ways to exercise. And to get the most out of your 58

cardio time, I invite you to venture out of your comfort zone and crank up the grade. Walking up a 10-percent grade will burn 75 percent more calories than walking on a flat surface. Walking uphill also makes your muscles work harder and gets your pulse up more quickly. But hear this: Do not torture yourself or elevate to the point of pain. Feeling “out of breath” for too long is counterproductive, so vary the challenge. Move the grade up, and allow yourself to breathe hard for a minute or two; then ease it down when it’s time to recover. It’s called interval training – alternating hard and easy moments in a workout – and it’s a very useful and efficient way to develop your fitness. IN WEIGHT TRAINING, SLOW AND STEADY IS BEST Lifting weights is a great way to build strength, protect joints and – be patient because this takes some time – reshape your body. But lifting weights in a herky-jerky way, out of alignment and out of control, is a bad habit that can lead to trouble. What’s a better way? Lift with awareness, in control, using your muscle power, not your momentum. Don’t tense your muscles to be strong. Just the opposite: Relax, and let the energy flow. Experiment with a s-l-o-w count, four counts up, four counts down, and slow it down gradually to eight or 10 counts, up and down. And focus, 72

The “Connection” 21 Tips To Master
S
eeking the
secret to business success? If you think it comes down to smarts, guts, rare talent, or plain old luck, you’re barking up the wrong tree. The missing ingredient is the ability to meaningfully connect with others.
Maribeth Kuzmeski, author of “The Connectors: How the World’s Most Successful Businesspeople Build Relationships and Win Clients for Life,” offers the following 21 tips to successful business connections: 1. Share something personal When you share something that isn't about numbers and the bottom line with another individual (e.g., a story about parenting or your struggle to balance your

Don't pretend to be perfect Everyone loves it when an underdog wins. It's natural to want to root for someone who faces the same challenges you do—so don't feel that your customers and colleagues have to believe that you're perfect!

3. Always say thank you Nobody makes it to the top on her own, so be sure to sincerely thank the people who have helped you succeed—no matter how large or small their contributions! 4. Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign that reads, "Make me feel important" This was the life philosophy of Mary Kay Ash, the well-known cosmetics mogul.

10. Resist the urge to be a one-upper Perhaps you feel compelled to share that you battled the flu for twice as long 6. Don't work from a script as your colleague. deliver just that. 14. Remember, "When she cries, she buys" This is the motto of Wisconsin-based financial advisor Dale Froehlich, who closes over 90 percent of his sales. What he means by this is simple: Ask questions about something that's close to the heart of the prospect (e.g., her children). Once she opens up to you, she trusts you. Then, she won't want to go anywhere else. 15. Give 'em something to talk about Don't assume that people talk about the things that are at the core of what your company provides. After all, those things are supposed to be there. However, people will remember and talk about the unexpected things that set you apart. It's often the small things that get people talking. Wouldn't it be nice if a store clerk gave you an extra 10 percent off your purchase for no particular reason, or if the restaurant manager threw in a free dessert?
18. Always take the high road All of us are faced with decisions that have ethical ramifications. You might have to think about containing costs, managing expectations, dealing with an error, or handling disagreements. Remember that it's a small world, and that you never know whose path you might cross or Nobody makes re-cross—so make sure have nothing to be it to the top on you ashamed of.
her own, so be sure to thank the people who helped you — no matter how large or small their contributions!
16. Let your passion shine through If you're truly energetic and passionate about what you do, other people will notice. They may buy from you, they may talk about you, or they may follow your career—and they'll definitely feel connected to you! 17. Brand yourself You don't have to plaster your picture all over a billboard or give clients a smiling bobblehead version of yourself, but you should leave something behind with the people you encounter: a thought, a memory, or a connection. For example, one
businessman who is very health-conscious focuses on his clients' overall well-being by incorporating healthy food, videos, books, and posters into his unrelated business offerings.
19. Lend a helping hand Don't be so focused on money that it's your only motivator. When you can afford to, help out your colleagues and clients even if you don't stand to gain anything material. What you will gain is even more valuable: respect and loyalty.
20. Stay in touch It's important to stay in contact with everyone in your network. Implement a system that helps you consistently reach out to all of your business acquaintances. Even if you're just saying hello, you'll stay on their radars! 21. Take a cue from plastic wrap: Be transparent! Always make sure that your employees and colleagues are aware of what's going on in your company. If you are up-front about your decision-making processes, goals, and company news, you'll earn everyone's trust, and they'll be more willing to unreservedly work for you and with you. Remember, honesty is the sign of a healthy company. ∆

Cruising The Southern Caribbean Jane and Marius Rubin
The Millennium is a spacious, well designed ship, easily accommodating its 2,034 passengers. It offers an abundance of amenities including several dining venues, a huge state-of-the-art theater, a modern spa with a thalassotherapy pool, swimming pool, extensive library, Internet café, lounges, sports bar, casino and shops. Members of the Captain’s Club, (repeat customers) enjoy access to the private Michael’s Lounge, an intimate place to unwind, sip complimentary cocktails, and chat with fellow club members. Our Southern Caribbean itinerary included stops at eight islands, each with its own attractions and highlights. Here are some of our favorites: Dominica Dominica, a former British colony, is a small island, famous for its rain forests, beautiful lakes, and winding rivers. Most of the island is a natural park, recognized as one of the premier eco-tourism destinations in the world. A top attraction is Emerald Pool, a green, natural pond fed by a 50-foot waterfall. Access to the pool is via a 20-minute sce
nic walk through the tropical Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Another popular site is Trafalgar Falls, a set of twin falls cascading out of deep gorges to the rain forest’s floor. Other island activities include scuba or snorkeling in the bubbling Champagne Reef, river tubing, and whale watching. St. Croix The largest of the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is popular for its laid back atmosphere, pristine beaches, and beautiful coral reefs. Its most famous underwater attraction is the Buck Island Marine Garden, a protected sanctuary with a submarine trail system. The stunning coral formations, grottos, and labyrinths are a haven for divers and snorkelers, St. Croix’s main city is Christiansted, a beautifully restored Danish-heritage town, teeming with shops and restaurants. Grenada Grenada welcomes its visitors with a delicate fragrance of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and cocoa, all grown and processed on the island. At the colorful markets, right

outside the port, vendors offer aromatic spices and local arts and crafts. Visitors also enjoy the island’s white sand beaches, easily accessible by water taxis from the ship’s terminal in St. George. Grenada is also popular with divers, snorkelers, and deep sea fishermen. Barbados Barbados is a sophisticated island offering first class resorts, fine restaurants, and beautiful beaches. On Paynes Bay beach, glass bottom boat operators offer a unique opportunity to swim with giant turtles that gather in this particular spot. Nearby, snorkelers can explore a reef created by an old sunken ship.

St. Martin Half French and half Dutch, this twonation island is one of the Caribbean’s top attractions. The French capital, Marigot, is dotted with chic shops and fine restaurants, and the Dutch capital, Phillipsburg, is bustling with duty free shops and casinos. The island’s coast is lined with sandy beaches, pristine coves, and lively oceanfront restaurants. Visitors divide their time between shopping, beach combing, and water sports. Puerto Rico San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital is the gateway to many Caribbean islands, an ideal place to stay for a few days before or after a cruise. The city’s main attraction is Old San Juan, an historic area with cobblestone streets, quaint squares, churches, and restaurants. Visit San Felipe del Morro Castle and its museum, and take in the magnificent panoramic views of the sea. Another popular site is the lush El Yunque Rain Forest, an hour and a half drive from the city. A short visit from a cruise ship offers only a glimpse into a Caribbean island. However, this first look often becomes the reason to return again and again. ∆

IS YOUR HOME OFFICE — From Pg. 19 recline in bed. “Laptops were designed for quick in and out of the office use, not permanent home use,” says Sieckmann, who notes that working exclusively on a laptop is asking for neck strain, shoulder pain and lower-back fatigue. “Although you can make some (ergonomic modifications), when you use a laptop, it’s hard to get your entire body in the proper position.” Try to place your laptop on a hard surface so the keyboard is approximately at elbow height, and your hands and wrists are in a straight line. If your laptop is the only computer option, consider getting a docking station, which lets you plug your laptop into a full-sized monitor and keyboard. DESK Optimal features: Should have a pullout computer keyboard shelf that can be raised or lowered to fit your body and reduce strain. A matte surface helps minimize glare. A document holder next to or attached to the monitor eliminates twisting and tilting your neck when typing from papers or books flat on the desk. TELEPHONE Optimal features: A hands-free headset will not only save your neck, it will also let you type, file and multitask while you’re on “hold” or sitting through a conference call. Consider a hands-free speakerphone. If the first two recommendations aren’t options, at least get a shoulder cradle attachment, which allows you to keep your head and neck upright while on the phone. LIGHTING TIPS Your computer screen should be the brightest spot in the room. Turn off or dim the overhead bulb. Add task lighting, placing either a floor or desk lamp at the side of your monitor, and angle it so it illuminates your desk and keyboard, not your computer screen. ∆
ORGANIZING A SLUMBER — From Pg.27 forms as well. The contact information is also handy for kids who decide they don’t want to stay the whole night or there’s a conflict between children. If you keep the list of emergency numbers handy and keep yourself ready for anything, you’ll be able to handle the situation a lot easier. Here are a few more tips: Establish the Rules Set the rules clearly with all of the kids right away. For example, let them know things like soda and juice are only allowed in the kitchen, shoes must be taken off at the door and all music must bet turned off by 10 p.m. The sooner they know your rules, the quicker they can follow them. Be On The Lookout for Food Allergies Find out about any food allergies or sensitivities before you start making peanutbutter finger sandwiches or gluten-filled snacks. Parents will offer this information, but if they don’t, then call before you go to the grocery store so you can plan the dinner, snacks and breakfast accordingly. It will save you the hassle and scariness of an allergic reaction. If you find a lot of the kids have different needs, it’s more than OK to ask their parents to pack them a safe meal or snacks. Think of it this way: You’re offering free baby-sitting services for the evening, so packing a safe meal or snack is the least they can do. Keep Them Active While the assembled group may instinctively roll their eyes at a grownup’s suggestion, don’t be deterred from giving them options. The last thing you want is a house full of bored kids. The more they have to keep them busy, the better they will sleep and the more fun they will have. Classic group activities like Twister, Kick the Can and karaoke are always fun. If your kids are in the younger group, having dress-up clothes will certainly be a hit, and you can’t really go wrong with a movie. Let the kids choose what movie they want and watch it yourself to make sure it’s appropriate. ∆

Your breath is your best friend when it comes to heavy lifting. Exhale with great enthusiasm as you lift up the weight (Exhale with Exertion). On your inhale, open March - April 2010
your lungs, top and bottom, and feel your heart lift. Exhale right into the muscle, joint or body part you’re working with, visually and mentally. It sounds abstract because it is abstract, but there’s no doubt the mind and body are energetically connected. Practice this – when you lift, when you stretch – and you’ll ease tightness and increase your range of motion. You’ll also experience the mind-body connection for yourself. Priceless. ∆
