Happier Life

Dotti Dotti DeHart DeHart

Y

ou’re busting your butt at work so that you can snag that coveted promotion, and when you come home each evening, a whole separate pile of responsibilities and chores awaits you. You feel like you’re a victim of circumstances. You’re the farthest thing from “happy” and there’s not a thing you think you can do about it. Sound familiar? If your answer is “yes,” Todd Patkin, author of the book Finding Happiness: One Man’s Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and — Finally — Let the Sunshine In has an important message for you: You can start to live a happier life. The choice is completely up to you. Learning to choose how you respond to life isn’t always an easy journey, Patkin admits. It’s going to take some effort, but it’s worth it. If you’re ready to take control of the stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts that have been running your life so far, then read on to learn about Patkin’s Twelve Weeks to Living a Happier Life… and why they’ll work for you. Exercise Exercise is one small change that yields really big, life-changing benefits. For start-

ers, it will begin to make you feel more relaxed, stronger, and more capable of handling life’s challenges — also, it will improve your sleep, and it’s a natural antidepressant that will help your attitude and outlook. And as time passes, you’ll gain the added bonus of being happier with your physical appearance as well. “Commit to walking just twenty minutes every other day to start out. You don’t have to join a gym, sign up for exhausting classes, and completely reorder your life to reap the benefits of this investment,” he says. Take Charge of Your Mind Why do you eat breakfast? To give your body the nutrients it needs so that you’ll have the energy to get through the day. Your mind is no different. If you want your thoughts and attitudes to be positive,

13

Hi Class Living

you must fill your brain with encouraging ideas. For this reason, Patkin recommends making motivational books and audio recordings part of your daily ritual, too. “Listening to a motivational CD during your morning commute or reading for fifteen minutes as you sip your coffee in the morning can put you in a positive place until you go to sleep in the evening. When you do this each day, you’ll find that your attitude is improved, and that you have learned new tools to eliminate your own self-doubt and self-criticism. By focusing more on all the positive aspects of who you are, what you are doing, and what is great in your life, you’ll find that the whole direction of your life can change,” Patkin reassures. Learn to Be Easier on Yourself If you’re like most people, you probably tend to focus a lot of your mental energy on the things you mess up rather than the things you do well. And as a result of magnifying your failures, you reinforce in your mind just how “subpar” you think you are. No wonder you’re unhappy! It’s time to realize that you’re human — and thus fallible — so you will make mistakes. Instead of beating yourself up, start celebrating your many successes. Until you give yourself permission to break free of the cycle of self-blame and negativity that causes you to be stuck demanding perfection from yourself in every situation, you’ll never have a chance to be a truly relaxed, content, and happy person. “The really tragic thing about fixating on your screw-ups is that for every one thing most people do wrong in a week, they usually do a hundred things right,” Patkin points out. “It’s not an easy thing to do, but if you want to be happier, you’ve got to start showing more compassion and love to yourself. This means giving yourself a break when things don’t go perfectly, and giving yourself a pat on the back when they do. For instance, let yourself bask in your family’s compliments when you cook a delicious meal, and savor your boss’s praise when you offer an ingenious solution at a July - August 2012

meeting. Basically, extend to yourself the same love and kindness that you would to others you care about!” Play to Your Strengths Most of us don’t spend a lot of time doing things we enjoy or are truly good at. The fact is that we all possess special abilities and unique talents. And if you want to be happy, you need to recognize, use, and share them. When you do, you’ll feel more fulfilled and proud of yourself, and the world will be better off, too. “Sit down and make a list of the things you are best at and the things you enjoy doing the most. Then, make it a goal to spend more time doing these things. Focusing more on a hobby or personal interest is a good start, even if you do it for only twenty minutes every other day. And if you determine that your career doesn’t utilize your strengths, start looking at online job postings or for local classes in your field of interest. It’s never too early — or too late — to start doing the things that make you happy,” advises Patkin. Eliminate Stressors Stress is bad! It prevents you from living in and enjoying the moment, and it can also cause negative long-term effects ranging from high blood pressure and insomnia to depression and anxiety. So it’s smart to eliminate as many stressors as possible. Often, something as simple as a shift in perspective can make all the difference. “Start by identifying the two or three things that cause you the most stress on a consistent basis. Often, you’ll find that there are concrete things you can do to lessen or even eliminate the pressure,” says Patkin. “Also, if you can’t eliminate or change a stressor, such as a job you hate but can’t afford to quit, challenge yourself to handle it differently. Specifically, decide beforehand how you will react in a more enlightened way when certain stressful situations occur — actually visualize yourself handling them with poise instead of becoming outwardly or inwardly worked up. 24

awsuits have become big business, especially since the economic downturn. They’re a cheap way for people to make lots of money, often with an investment of just a few hours’ time.

The plaintiff may never even have to prove a thing; the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills can scare a defendant into opting for a settlement without ever putting up a fight. Even if he did nothing wrong. More than 100 million lawsuits are filed each year; one in three people will be sued in the next 12 months. No one’s immune, but people with a lot of assets showing are especially vulnerable. If someone thinks you’ve got a lot to lose, and thus, they’ve got a lot to gain, you become a choice target. People who are less affluent are vulnerable in a different way: If a person with $100,000 in assets gets sued for $1 million, they’ll be wiped out, whereas the person with $5 million can survive a $1 million lawsuit. The time to protect your assets is before you get sued; it’s much more enforceable, costs less and you’ll have

more options available. Here are some tips from Hillel L. Presser, author of “Financial Self-Defense,” and a lawyer specializing in asset protection. www.assetprotectionattorneys.com: Inventory your wealth Most people have a lot more than they think. Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other non-liquid assets. Convert non-exempt assets into exempt assets State laws protect some personal assets from lawsuits and creditors. Those assets typically include your primary residence; personal items such as furniture and clothing; pensions and retirement funds; and life insurance. Find out the exemptions for your state and convert non-exempt assets (i.e. cash) into exempt assets (i.e. life insurance). Protect every asset from every creditor There’s no point in protecting your money if your business is exposed. There’s

July - August 2012

no point in protecting your business if your house is exposed. There’s no point in protecting your house if your boat is exposed. Protect everything! Your asset protection plan should hold up whether your neighbor is suing you or the most powerful attorney downtown. Don’t rely solely on liability insurance Buy as much insurance as you can; it’s cheap and it helps you sleep at night. But realize that 70 percent of claims are not covered. Your coverage may be inadequate for a particular suit; your insurance company may go bankrupt. Having insurance and an asset protection plan is the belt and suspenders approach to hanging onto your pants. Avoid fraudulent transfers A fraudulent transfer occurs if your creditor doesn’t get paid because you sold an asset to a person or entity for less than its fair market value when faced with a lawsuit. Such a transfer, done with the intent to hinder, delay, or defraud a creditor, can invalidate your entire asset protection plan. 38

Foods That Fuel The Fires Of Love Chuck Norris

J

ust as some substances in excess can hinder romantic moods and performance, such as alcohol and even sugar, certain foods are believed to enhance sexual drive.

Here are a few of them from Dr. G. Frank Lawlis, co-author of the The Brain Power Cookbook, and other health professionals’ lists: Ancient Romans regarded oysters as aphrodisiacs, likely because they are high in zinc, which increases sperm count and libido, high in D-aspartic acid and Nmethyl-D-aspartate, which may increase testosterone and estrogen levels, and high in omega-3 fatty acids, which improve blood circulation and the nervous system. And acording to Dr. Barbara Bartlik, assistant professor of psychiatry and sex therapist with the Human Sexuality Program at Weill Cornell Medical Center, “sex is really about circuitry.” July - August 2012

Bananas are rich in potassium, magnesium and B vitamins, which contribute to healthy sex-hormone production, as well. They also contain the bromeliad enzyme and chelating minerals, which enhance male libido. Avocados, much like bananas, are rich in potassium, vitamin B-6 and folic acid, boosting sexual health and the immune system. Papaya has compounds that act like estrogen and has been used as a folk remedy in promoting menstruation, aiding in milk production, facilitating childbirth and increasing the female libido. Here’s what AlterNet reports on asparagus: “An English herbalist from the

22

17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus ‘stirs up lust in man and woman.’ In 19th century France, bridegrooms were served three courses of the sexy spears at their prenuptial dinners. Apparently for a good reason: asparagus is a great source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin and folic acid. The latter is said to boost histamine production necessary for the ability to reach orgasm in both sexes.” Soy, found in soy milk, soy cheese (tofu), soybeans, etc., contains isoflavones, which help promote healthy sexual organ function. However, be careful, for studies also have linked soy with increase risks of headaches and breast cancer.

The amino acid arginine contributes to healthy blood flow and sexual response. Arginine is abundant in walnuts, peanuts, cashews, oatmeal, granola, dairy foods, green and root vegetables, ginseng, garlic, soybeans, chickpeas and seeds. These foods also contain healthy fats, which are required for the production of testosterone and estrogen. Though garlic typically is associated with not-so-romantic bad breath, it is also plentiful with allicin and arginine, ingredients that increase blood flow. Those in the Orient have long used ginseng as an aphrodisiac, as well as a natural treatment for stress-related symptoms. MedicineNet cites Christopher Sai-

23

Hi Class Living

gal, M.D., assistant professor of urology at the UCLA School of Medicine, who said: “Ginseng, like a lot of herbs, is thought to work by helping the body make more nitric oxide — as does Viagra. A couple of good studies showed some effect from ginseng, so people can look at this as (a natural) alternative to Viagra. But it’s not going to be as effective as Viagra or Levitra or Cialis.” As far as other herbs and spices go, Science Daily reported in March 2011 that researchers from the University of Guelph studied natural aphrodisiacs in “the most thorough scientific review to date” and discovered that “panax ginseng, saffron and yohimbine, a natural chemical from yohimbe trees in West Africa, improved human sexual function... People (also) report increased sexual desire after eating muira puama, a flowering plant found in Brazil; maca root, a mustard plant in the Andes; and chocolate.” (But remember that even herbs and spices can be detrimental if taken in excess or the wrong doses, so always consult your physician or health practitioner before changing or adding anything to your diet.) Chocolate, called “the king of natural aphrodisiacs,” contains feel-good chemicals anandamide, phenylethylamine and tryptophan, all of which promote a sense of well-being and relaxation. Chocolate STEPS TO A HAPPIER LIFE— From Pg. 14 Having a game plan in place before the ‘beast’ rears its ugly head really can reduce your negative reactions to stressors — big time.” Live in the Present How often do your thoughts “live” in the present? More to the point, how often are they instead fixated on your disappointing or disturbing past or spent worrying about your future? If you are like most people, your percentage of time not spent in the present is way, way too high, and thus you’re missing out on life itself. If you’re ruminating on what’s already happened or fretting about what might come July - August 2012

also releases endorphins, which explains the craving and comforting feelings many associate with chocolate in times of stress. Though specifically not tied to sexual arousal in the Guelph study, chocolate’s chemical effects likely exacerbate sexual passions. A word of caution in all of this discussion about natural aphrodisiacs: There is no singular love tonic or cure-all food, herb or medicine that will create arousal even if desire is absent, but the above list can enhance romance if a couple’s chemistry is right. The fact is that a healthy diet and regular exercise enable proper human function in every respect, including sexuality. On the other hand, poor diet, no exercise and being overweight or obese can contribute to sexual dysfunctions, from low testosterone and estrogen levels to poor views of self. Just as saturated fats clog arteries, they can restrict blood flow to sexual organs, too. Mostly, remember that when it comes to love, romance and healthy relationships, there are no replacements for mutual respect, daily thoughtfulness and sacrificial giving to fan the flames of love. As the great Victor Hugo, the author of the classic “Les Miserables,” once said, “the supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved — loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.”∆

to pass, you’re not enjoying the blessings all around you. You’re exacerbating your anxiety and unhappiness by choosing to dwell on things you can’t change or control. “In order to practice being in the present, you’ll have to do a little bit of homework,” Patkin instructs. “Specifically, you’ll need to look at your past and forgive others (and yourself!) for any wrongs you might be holding on to. Also, you’ll need to identify what, exactly, you dread about the future. First, figure out how likely these things are to actually happen, and then plan how you’d deal with the worst-case scenario. Usually, you’ll see that even the worst 32

Karpinski says the benefits of staying July - August 2012

in a vacation rental home far outweigh the (extremely minimal) risks. These properties are more spacious and often less expensive than hotel rooms. They’re appointed with all the comforts of home (because, of course, they are homes). They’re private. They tend to be kid friendly. Often, they’re pet friendly as well.

be vacationers who went rental fee — and showed for rent at all. By taking certain precautions, you can make the likelihood of getting scammed almost non-existent, she insists. Mostly, it’s about following the first commandment of Internet commerce: “Thou shalt do everything possible to verify the identity of the person to whom thou sendest thy money.” Here are some tips to help you safely

book your vacation home. Beware of super-cheap rates

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. The most common way scammers work is by enticing a large number of travelers in a short period of time. They do this by low-balling the rental rates. “If one listing is, say, half the price of all other comparable ones for the same amount of time, beware,” cautions Karpinski. “Put yourself in the owner’s shoes: Why would he or she voluntarily forgo that much income? Five, ten, or maybe even fifteen percent off, perhaps, but fifty percent? No way.” make sure the owner really is the owner Many states make it easy to look up property tax records. Google the property appraiser in the county where the property is located to make sure the person you are renting from actually owns the property. You might also Google the homeowner’s association and look for a phone number on the website. Call the HOA and ask if the owners really are the owners. “Now, some of the tax records might show that the property is owned by an LLC or trust. But that information actually serves as an extra barrier against being scammed,” says Karpinski. “The rental agreement should mention the LLC or trust. If it doesn’t, call the owner and ask. He or she should be able to tell you the name of this legal entity without hesitation.” Cyber-stalk the owner Do some cross-referencing across various websites: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so forth. Make sure the place of residence (where the owner lives—not where the vacation home is located) is the same as the information the owner provided. “If, for instance, you were renting one of my vacation homes in Florida, you’d see that I always provide my guests with my home and cell phone numbers,” says Karpinski. “My home number is a 512 area code. Now, if you looked me up on July - August 2012

LinkedIn, my public profile says that I live in Austin, TX, which would match the info I provided.” Also, she suggests Googling the phone number listed on the advertisement. Many property owners and managers list their homes on many different websites. If you Google the phone number listed on the ad in this format XXX XXX-XXX (area code, space, first three digits, dash, last four digits) many other websites that the property is listed on should show up in search results. Look for clues in the reviews When you are reading the reviews of the property (either on the vacation rental website or on other sites such as TripAdvisor.com), there are sometimes references to the owners’ names. A review might say something like: “Thanks, Tom and Christine, for allowing us to rent your lovely home…” If the names in the reviews do NOT match the name of the person renting the home to you, it could be a sign that something is not right. “Also, a lot of times the owner’s name and/or the housekeeper’s name will be in the review,” notes Karpinski. “If you see several reviewers thanking Mary for her wonderful hospitality, and the woman you’re dealing with is named Mary, it’s probably a legitimate listing.” Speak with the owner via phone Sure, it’s possible to be scammed over the phone. However, it’s usually easier to fool someone when you’re communicating via type. If the owner sounds warm and engaging and seems to know her stuff, you’re probably okay. If she sounds guarded or uncertain, you might have reason to worry. Also, says Karpinski, when you get someone on the phone, you can ask specific questions—and listen carefully to the answers. “Ask about the local area,” she suggests. “Ask about the best restaurants, the most unusual attractions, and so forth. If you get quick, natural answers, it’s probably not a scam. If the owner hesitates, or if you hear

28

S u m m er S ale the sound of her Googling furiously, you would likely be suspicious.” Pay only by credit card Don’t use PayPal, don’t send a personal check, and NEVER, EVER pay by wire transfer, advises Karpinski. “Scammers are less likely than legitimate property owners to have a credit card merchant account set up,” she says. “And even if you were to still get scammed, you’d be able to call your credit card’s fraud prevention center and report it.” Go with A major vacation rental website You’re probably safest choosing a site like HomeAway, VRBO, FlipKey, or Airbnb. Of course, a respected name doesn’t guarantee a 100 percent safe transaction — there have been instances of owners having their e-mail accounts hijacked by scammers — but the major websites tend to have better safeguards in place. Listen to your gut… it’s often right Do your research. Call the property owner. Listen carefully to everything. If something just feels “off,” move on to another property, advises Karpinski. Renting a vacation home is like anything else, insists Karpinski. It’s not risk-free, but when you take these steps to mitigate the risk, you can feel 99.9 percent confident that you’re not getting scammed, and these are pretty good odds. ∆

heating up the ocean beaches as well as the city streets this summer. One of the season’s biggest fashion hits, shorts are turning up everywhere and becoming a mainstay in wardrobes

The shorts are anything but basic. From office-worthy culottes and rompers to casual, sassy denim cutoffs, there’s plenty of short shorts out there to choose from — that is if you want to show off your legs — and if you don’t, don’t worry, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy wearing shorts when the weather gets chilly — just team your shorts up with tights! For a more professional look, belt longer shorts and pair them with a blazer and pumps; for more casual offices, sweaters and flats are great with shorts. Here’s what’s trending on the short list right now: Denim cutoffs An old favorite, these frayed shorts are always a laid-back option for lazy summer days. The more faded and soft the shorts, the better. Check out Levi’s 501 Worn Cut-Offs. High-waisted shorts A glamorous retro style inspired by Hollywood pin-up starlets. Often belted or buttoned up with sailor-front style, these shorts add feminine curves to slim waists. Or go for a high-waisted short with a fold-over waistband, if you want to emphasize your hips. Booty call These shorts are only for those of us with really great legs. Often dubbed “booty” shorts or “hot pants,” these very short shorts often look almost like bikini bottoms and therefore should probably remain poolside or on the runway — definitely not on the street! Check out the printed floral shorts with matching bustiers from Jason Wu at jasonwustudio.com. Soft shorts There are lots of shorts that look a lot like short skirts. In soft, silky, drapable fabrics, these shorts resemble “tap pants” and are one of the most flattering silhouettes because of their breezy style that moves like a twirling dance skirt. In longer “culotte” styles, they are perfect for casual work places. Check out the “Surf Luxe” version at topshop.com. STEPS TO A HAPPIER LIFE— From Pg. 24 turn of events would not destroy you and could be handled, albeit with some stress and difficulty. “Once you have begun to take control of your past- and future-oriented thoughts, you can truly begin to appreciate the present moment. You’ll need to be aware of what your thoughts are ‘doing,’ and please don’t get discouraged when you find yourself going back to your old negative mental habits! In fact, pat yourself on the back because you’re noticing that you’re doing something you don’t want to do anymore. Over time, you’ll start to live the adventurous, wonderful life in the present you were always meant to!” Spend More Time with Positive People. Have you ever heard of “social proof”? It’s the phenomenon of being influenced more by the people we are around the most. If you spend as much of your time as possible with positive people, you’ll continually be inspired. However, if most of your friends, family, and coworkers are July - August 2012

Whether they’re medium length and tailored or longer Bermuda styles, these shorts are the most versatile in linen or cotton. Check out the easy flat-front styles at J.Jill, jjill.com. negative, they will inevitably pass their unhealthy attitudes on to you. “If you’re truly serious about building a happier life for yourself, you need to look at the people with whom you spend most of your time and decide which are positive influencers and which are negative influencers,” Patkin instructs. “Gradually, you need to gravitate more toward the ‘Positives’ and distance yourself from the ‘Negatives.’ This might mean calling a positive friend and asking to meet up for coffee or a beer, or walking away from the water cooler when your coworkers begin to gripe and complain. “Over time, your goal is to make a significant shift in terms of the people with whom you surround yourself. I know that it’s hard to put distance between yourself and a person who has been a big part of your life, but the fact is that you’re at a crossroads. Would you rather maintain relationships that are familiar, but built on negativity, or would you rather form new ones that will propel your happiness journey forward? I strongly recommend

Be Friendlier Although our society is more and more “connected” by technology, we interact less and less with other people on a meaningful, face-to-face level than ever before. But guess what? Extending simple human kindness to other people can make a huge difference in their lives…and in yours. Strengthen Close Relationships Unless a family member or close friend is a truly, irredeemably toxic influence, Patkin insists that it’s always worth putting work into improving close relationships. This is simply because the quality of the relationships you have with the people you are the closest to — your family and friends — can make or break the quality of your life. Loving, supportive relationships will majorly enhance your happiness levels. But fractious, unstable, or even distant relationships with your family members and historically close friends can leave you feeling unappreciated, angry, alone, and anxious. “So, starting with your immediate family members and the people you see every day, and then working outward, reach out to the people who are meaningful to you and tell them how important they are to you! Also, try to address any unresolved grievances and apologize for the things you may regret,” Patkin advises. “And there’s one relationship you need to focus on in particular: the one with your spouse or significant other. Put more work into this relationship than you do into anything else: your house, your car, or your job, etc. Celebrate your spouse every day. Trust me: This can make such a great difference in your emotional health, your stress levels, and your overall happiness!”

The Kate Effect Sharon Mosley

K

ate Middleton has quickly become a fashion icon, admired the world over for her easy elegance.

It seems that whatever she wears is an immediate hit at retail — Zara’s tangerine jeans, a green Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress, a Burberry trench coat, Adidas sneakers — they’re all snatched up by followers of the chic Duchess of Cambridge. But you don’t have to be able to afford High Street prices to get the young royal’s high style. Yes, you, too, can get the Kate Middleton effect on a budget. Her look is easy to mimic with clean classics that never go out of fashion. Here’s a list of some of Kate’s favorite looks that retailers and designers have copied at all price points: The sculpted dress The British icon has single-handedly made the dress once again a wardrobe favorite. In simple, elegant silhouettes, she stands out in royal style, particularly in shapes that are fitted and sleek on top, belted and more flared on the bottom. The wrap dress is another one of Kate’s essentials — again highlighting the waist and showing off one of her best assets. Green is one of her go-to colors for dresses, but she also likes navy and even white. The creamy white dress by Joseph that she wore on her visit to Quebec was very unexpected and a stunner. July - August 2012

The colored jeans Making a casual statement is another one of Kate’s most photographed moments this spring with Great Britain’s hockey team in the tangerine Zara jeans complete with navy Pucci blazer and printed “Olympic” official scarf one moment and out on the playing field sans blazer and in a hoodie the next. Add some colorful sneakers to the mix and you’ve got a unique approach that we can all appreciate for function and versatility. The trench coat Another British classic, the trench coat (hers was by Burberry) always seems cool and chic. If you’re lucky enough to be going to the Olympics this summer, be sure to pack this essential. The skirt suit Tweeds are so British, but Kate has managed to make the tweed suit look modern by wearing updated designs like the ones she’s worn from designer Rebecca Taylor that feature sexy slim pencil skirts and crisp sharp jackets with frayed seams. Peplum jackets are another Kate favorite, once again showing off that fabulous 38 figure.

Men’s Fashion Sharon Mosley

W

hen it comes to style, men have it so easy. Men’s fashion trends don’t change as often, or as drastically, as they do for women.

However many men stumble into some of the same fashion pitfalls, according to Sherrie Mathieson, fashion expert and author of the Baby Boomer’s guide Forever Cool: How to Achieve Ageless, Youthful and Modern Personal Style. The fashion stylist urges men to reevaluate their physical size occasionally. “Do you really still have a 34-inch waist or is it closer to 40? Men often cling to formula dressing that should have been retired long ago.” She also calls for caution when it comes to borrowing ideas from the younger generation. “Think twice before you indulge in the excessive or outrageous,” she says. “The goal is to find comfort and style in a look that is simple, unaffected and masculine. It’s not about being a fashion plate — it’s about simplicity in both color and style.” While you may not be ready to step out in the latest trim swim trunks or a colorful pair of suede wingtips, there are definitely some ways to update your wardrobe this summer. Here are some of Mathieson’s tips: • Skip the bold, overwhelming colors. Look for more understated hues to July - August 2012

combine in both sporty clothes and suits. Tone-on-tone charcoal and blue are two of the most popular color combos this season. • Make sure clothes fit. There’s nothing worse than baggy T-shirts and shorts that make men look older than they are. “No piece of clothing should be too tight,” says Mathieson. Experiment with hightech fabrics that offer form and function in casual clothes. And while the “skinny” jean has loosened up this year, trousers and pants are still on the narrow side and can be much more flattering than pleated, slouchy styles. Front pleated denim pants are neither jean nor trouser. They belong in no-man’s-land. • Steer clear of “problem prints.” We’ve all seen these — from the other end of the mall. Hawaiian floral prints are still around but very toned down in more subtle colors. And there are plenty of other newsy “prints” out there in more sophisticated checks and plaids. • When it comes to accessories for men, Mathieson’s No. 1 pick is a watch. “It’s as good a clue to his personality as handwriting analysis,” she says. “The watch you choose can scream, ‘I’m wealthy’ (think gold, encrusted with diamonds) or it can

speak quietly of self-confidence with its spare elegance.” • Ditch the Mr. Magoo oversized glasses and choose eyewear that’s modern and in a shape that flatters your face. Horn-rimmed glasses are a classic. • Belts should always complement your shoes in style and color. A black or brown belt in plain leather with a simple buckle will work well. And remember, you don’t always have to wear a belt — especially with shorts. • Shoes should never be considered a mere necessity or afterthought. A classic

shoe is always a safe bet (black or brown Oxfords in a wingtip or cap-toe), but if you opt for something trendy, make sure it’s well designed and understated. And please skip the knee-high socks with sandals. That’s a definite fashion “don’t.” • The more extensive your repertoire of accessories — those you buy each season for updating and those classics you’ve collected over the years -- the more options you’ll have for mixing-and-matching, and increasing the potential for multiple outfits whether they’re casual, professional, or dressy. ∆

PROTECTING EVERYTHING — From Pg. 18

Don’t title your assets solely to your spouse or to “straw men” They may have more financial problems than you.

Protect with liens What is a $100,000 car worth if you owe $95,000? What is a $1 million house worth if you owe $950,000? Take out lines of credit. Record mortgages against your property. Make all of your assets valueless. Become an unattractive candidate for a lawsuit. THE KATE EFFECT — From Pg. 34 The elegant coat Fall may be a few months away, but a standout coat is always a good investment at any time of the year. Kate takes a streamlined approach to her outerwear — from fitted princess styles worn over dresses to sportier shorter jackets trimmed in fur and worn with jeans. The evening gown Of course, all royals need a few glamorous gowns to round out their wardrobes. And if you’re planning on attending a ball yourself in the near future, then you’ll want to take some cues from Kate herself. The all-over lace gown from Alice Temperley she wore to the “War Horse” July - August 2012

Transfer your assets to a protective entity The key to asset protection is to own nothing while controlling everything. Transfer any non exempt assets out of your name to protective entities such as trusts, LLC’s (limited liability companies), limited partnerships, etc. Keep your plan up to date Laws change every year. Have your plan reviewed yearly. ∆

movie premier was a stunning example of one of her finest moments last year, but you can’t go wrong with a black strapless number, either. All the extras Between nude pumps and cowboy hats, what’s not to like about this newest member of the British royal family? She loves Jimmy Choo stilettos, but she is just as at home in a pair of Adidas sneakers, too. She and her sister, Pippa, have also inspired us with their fascinating “fascinator” hats. And she loves her clutch handbags by Anya Hindmarch — another British designer. Then there’s the famous sapphire ring copied by jewelers everywhere. ∆

Pillow Talk Mary Carol Garrity

T

hey may be featherweights, but as decorating tools, accent pillows pack a powerful punch. The right pillows take a nothing room and make it fresh and fabulous.

Here are some simple steps: Picking out the blend of colors, patterns and fabric styles for accent pillows is a personal pilgrimage. There is no one right approach or combination, except the one that makes your heart jump for joy. Some people want a mix of classics that will never go out of style. Others want to embrace the latest trends, with the freshest and newest colors and patterns. Some like a muted, tone-on-tone palette, while others want an electric mix of zesty colors and robust patterns. To find a picture-perfect pillow combination, first evaluate the style and color palette of the space and the furniture where July - August 2012

the pillows will sit. If there is already a lot of pattern and color in the furniture or room, keep the pillows pretty neutral. But “neutral” doesn’t mean “boring.” You can use lots of different fabric textures, styles and trims to give the pillows personality. If the room and furnishings are neutral, then the sky’s the limit for pillows. You can keep your pillows neutral, in keeping with the room. Or you can use the pillows to introduce contrasting colors and patterns. If you want to try bold new colors and patterns, go for it. When you group pillows, create balance in the fabrics so they work wonderfully together, complementing each other, not

42

A selection of decorative pillows from BoConcepts. competing. To strike this fine line, pay attention to the size of the patterns. If you have a big pillow with a bold, large pattern, then pair it with pillows in solid fabrics. If you pick a smaller geometric pattern, then you can mix it with a larger plaid or floral. Once you pick fabrics that make you smile, it’s time to determine the number, size and shape of your pillow mix. The size and scale of the furniture you are adorning will give you boundaries, and your personal taste will let you know how full or sparse to fill in within those boundaries. Some people like their sofas decorated with a number of pillows in different sizes,

while others want just a few. 24- by 24-inch pillows are the perfect pick for standard-sized sofas (21- by 21inch pillows just look too dinky). Try placing matching 24-inch-square pillows on each corner of the sofa. Then put a standard-sized pillow (20 inches by 26 inches) in the middle. Finish off with a pair of smaller rectangular pillows (14 inches by 22 inches) against each arm of the sofa. If that’s too many pillows for you, put a matching pair of 24-inch pillows in each corner, then place a matching pair (in a contrasting fabric) of 21-inch-square pillows in front of them and call it a day. 46 43

A water feature is usually the focal point of a garden, and should match its style. An elegant rectangular or circular pool would complement the geometric beds and straight paths of a formal garden. Meandering pathways and easygoing planting schemes would favor a water feature with undulating edges and a natural look. The paving and planting at any pool’s edge should blend the pool

and surrounding landscape together. If possible, locate your water feature where you can enjoy it most -- near a window close to your easy chair or next to the patio or deck where you can spend a pleasant summer evening. Once you’ve found the perfect setting, consider the needs of the feature and its occupants before you dig. Avoid low or poorly drained areas where rainwater runoff might contaminate the water. You’ll want at least five hours of direct sun daily to support light-hungry water plants. Still water is the ideal environment for many delicate aquatic plants like water lilies that can’t take rushing torrents. A still-water pool makes a perfect mirror to reflect the colors of summer, the clouds in the sky and the fire of fall leaves. If your pool is large enough, a flowing fountain or waterfall at one end will leave the water still enough at the other for fragile plants. Moving water’s ever-changing sounds and shapes can have a relaxing effect. Water’s sound can even be adjusted to personal taste: the farther it falls, the louder the sound. Dampen the tones with lush plantings or amplify them by building a small, cavelike resonating chamber behind the waterfall to reflect sound back. There are several basic types of aquatic plants for a water garden. Oxygenators are rapid-growing, floating plants sold in clumps. They release oxygen into the water through photosynthesis, and shade the water to help prevent algae growth. Parrot feather, water hyacinth and water poppy are popular oxygenators. Emergent plants like water lilies are

the signature water plant. Hardy varieties have rounded leaves and white, yellow or rosy flowers that float on the water. They overwinter in Zones 3-10. Tropical water lilies also come in lilac and blue tones, have scalloped leaves and hold their flowers on stems that stand out of the water. They are either grown as annuals or removed from the water and stored in damp moss where they won’t freeze. Both have cultivars tiny enough for even the smallest water gardens. Hardy water lilies include bright red “Louise,” bright pink “Pink Opal” and white “Walter Pagels.” Tropical water lilies include deep blue “Midnight,” pink “Texas Shell Pink” and night-blooming, white “Woods White Night.” Arrowhead and dwarf papyrus provide a strong vertical accent to lowgrowing floaters. For the edge transition zone between pool and dry land, plant moisture-loving ground covers, bog plants and perennials like lady’s mantle, Siberian irises, yellow flag, lobelias, ferns and primrose. If you want to start small or just create a showpiece container for a deck or patio, use a 15- to 25-gallon (or larger) lightweight fiberglass pot. Run the electric cord of a small submersible pump through the drain hole and seal the hole with silicone caulk. Fill the pot with water and plant with a mix of oxygenators, low and tall emergent plants. There are plenty of how-to articles and videos online that can take you through the entire process. It’s a simple and inexpensive project that only takes an hour or two to set up and a great introduction to the many benefits of having a water garden. ∆

PILLOW TALK — From Pg. 43 If your sofa is unusually deep or the back is very high, you might prefer a 27-inchsquare pillow. In fact, you might need a row of them against the back of the sofa to fill in the space and allow you to touch the floor. The secret to success in creating a lovely pillow is use a high-quality fill. Choose a mixture of feathers and down because they

are soft and dense and can make even inexpensive readymade pillows look amazing. Even if you make a pillow out of a topof-the-line fabric but use a lower-quality fill, the pillow will look scrawny and shapeless. If you have to scrimp someplace when doing a custom pillow, scrimp on the fabric and use a high-quality feather pillow form. ∆

There is a long list of symptoms of Lyme disease, and many of them can be vague. Ticks carrying Lyme Disease leave behind a large ‘bulls-eye’ shaped rash. The rash can appear one to 30 days after a tick bite Other symptoms include fatigue, chills, fever, headache, and muscle aches. Epidemiologist Megan Saunders, from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, further explained, “The classic symptom is a rash but also can have very serious long-term neurological, rheumatological and arthritic symptoms, as well as some cardiac symptoms.” Moreover, the National Institutes of Health concluded that Lyme’s impact upon one’s total personal health can be equal to congestive heart failure. July - August 2012

Brand-new research also is linking chronic Lyme disease, or CLD, to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults, and also to depression and anxiety. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, Lyme disease can seriously and chronically affect all systems in the body. Obviously, the best way to avoid Lyme disease is to avoid being bitten by deer ticks. So do your best to stay away from areas potentially infested with them. That means staying on paths and out of brush, tall weeds and long grass. Remember that ticks don’t fly or jump. They cling to plant life often no more than 18 inches off the ground, where they wait for humans or animals to brush up against them. Once on board your clothing, they

The American Lyme Disease Foundation advises to wear light-colored, tightly woven clothing to make it easier to see crawling ticks.” The ALDF also suggests “avoiding sitting directly on the ground or on stone walls; walking in the middle of established trails rather than at the edges; tucking pants into socks, and shirts into pants; and wearing covered shoes. Cover as much skin as you can. If you’re going to be outdoors working or playing, apply insect repellant to your clothing and skin (the Mayo Clinic recommends those containing a 10 to 30 percent concentration of DEET); just make sure you wash thoroughly when coming indoors or before eating.

If you’re camping, elevate your bedding and other items on which those creepy critters might crawl or cling. For those who own pets, keep them on a leash, and keep them from roaming into potentially invested areas. Check them often for ticks, and bathe them regularly so that they don’t become transports for ticks. Furthermore, consider where your animals lie and sleep in the house; if it’s often in family beds, don’t be surprised if you find yourself “sleeping with the enemy.” Treat your yard or campsite with insect repellant or pesticide, but be very careful, as some of them are unsafe for kids and hazardous for pets. Read labels carefully, and make sure campground regulations

allow such treatments. Right before you come indoors, check yourself or have someone else thoroughly check you for ticks. Pay special attention to your head, your hair, the back of your neck, your underarm areas, between your legs, around your waist and the back of your knees. Bath after being outside to help spot ticks or wash off ones that haven’t attached yet.Check outdoor gear and pets for ticks, and run clothing through a hot dryer for an hour to kill any ticks. The good news is that a tick that carries the bacteria has to be on your body for 24 to 36 hours before it can transmit Lyme disease, according to Dr. Rajlakshmi Krishnamurthy from Boston Medical Center. So you have a small window to remove them from your body and garments. The bad news, according to Phillip Baker, executive director of the American

July - August 2012

Lyme Disease Foundation, is that the risk of Lyme disease increases if an attached deer tick is on you for 36 to 48 hours and is engorged. If you find a tick feeding on you, take caution that you remove it correctly. Sue Beebe, the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s assistant director, warns, “Using matches, Vaseline, credit cards, those are the things not to remove a tick.” Kelly Spindler, director of environmental health for the Ross County Health District in Ohio, advises not to twist it, and never to burn it off with a match or by pouring some sort of chemical on it. The last thing you want is for the tick to regurgitate or burst, which will increase the risk of infection. Instead, use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible (by its mouth’s base), and then pull it smoothly and directly up. Apply antiseptic immediately

afterward. If caught early, Lyme disease can be treated with two to four weeks of antibiotics, says Dr. Rajlakshmi Krishnamurthy from Boston Medical Center. She and other experts say that such treatment usually prevents the development of the later stages of the disease. The Mayo Clinic’s website explains that more intense forms and treatment of antibiotics (including intravenous) can cause various side effects, including a lower white blood cell count, mild to severe diarrhea, or colonization or infection with other antibiotic resistant organisms unrelated to Lyme. Some experts believe that certain people who get Lyme disease are predisposed to develop an autoimmune response that contributes to their symptoms. Contact your physician or health practitioner immediately if you or your loved

ones see a large bull’s-eye-shaped rash left behind by a tick carrying the Lyme disease bacteria or experience early symptoms, such as fatigue, fever, chills, muscle aches and headaches. For more information about deer ticks and Lyme disease, I recommend the following websites: www.lymediseaseassociation.org, www.cdc.gov/ticks, www. underourskin.com and www.texaslyme. org/about.htm. Also check out natural resources such as Cellgevity and glutathione to build up your immune system and energy. But be cautious of Lyme treatments with Bismacine, also known as chromacine, which contains high levels of the metal bismuth, which the Mayo Clinic also says to avoid. Health Threats With Temper

uring heat waves, many risk of developing dehy

As the body tries to maintain a normal temperature, exposure to high heat causes profuse sweating, increasing heart rate and respiration. Increased flow of blood through the lungs and skin helps reduce body temperature. More dangerous than excessive sweating, heat exposure can cause a heart attack or stroke, particularly in people with cardiac problems. High blood pressure, diabetes or significant obesity increases the risk of heat-related illness. In addition, medications can make coping with heat waves more difficult. Many tranquilizers interfere with the body’s ability to cope with heat as do beta blockers to treat high blood pressure and diuretics to promote fluid loss. Alcohol particularly compounds health dangers of heat, as it not only leads to fluid loss but also interferes with judgment, which may result in an inebriated person spending more time in the heat than appropriate. Older adults are at particular risk of serious problems during heat waves. Aging blunts the thirst drive, making it difficult to recognize dehydration or the need to increase fluid intake. Research has shown that when fluid is withheld from anyone July - August 2012

over the age of 70, it takes much longer for the body to replace the fluid than it does in a younger person. If fluid is not replaced, a condition called delirium develops, which leads to confusion, even less fluid intake, and a vicious cycle of worsening dehydration and confusion. Once dehydration occurs, the ability to regulate body temperature becomes compromised. The temperature can increase to 105 degrees or more. In turn, this leads to damage of many organ systems and a high risk of death. Each year, hundreds of older people die from heatstroke, particularly if they live alone or in homes that do not have air conditioning. For many older people, problems with heat can occur without much exertion, but for younger people, it can be extremely dangerous spending a great deal of time outdoors during extreme heat or exercising when it is very hot. Early problems suggesting heat problems include: headache, dizziness or fainting, profuse sweating, cold and clammy skin, muscle cramps, a rapid heart rate, and nausea or throwing up. As the problems progress, heatstroke can occur. Symptoms include increas- 59

High Intensity Exercise Takes Your Breath Away Marilynn Preston

W

elcome to the brave new world of high intensity exercise, or Peak Fitness training, the world of getting stronger and lasting longer.

It’s now being marketed by one of its most breathless champions, the controversial and courageous Dr. Joseph Mercola. Adding individualized anaerobic workouts to your exercise routine — one or two sessions a week, just 20 minutes each — will dramatically boost your fitness, burn your fat, rip your muscles, rejuvenate your heart and much more, says the good doctor. All this, while saving you hours in the gym. It’s a major exercise mistake, Mercola insists, to focus exclusively on long hours of aerobic training. (Think running, walking, biking, swimming.) Aerobic exercise is wildly important for all the reasons we know, but what we don’t know and what Mercola wants to teach us is the tremendous value of exercising anaerobically, as well — 20-30 second sprints of all-out exhausting effort, followed by 90 seconds of recovery. In one of his 20-minute Peak Fitness workouts, ideally done on a recumbent bike or elliptical cross trainer, you’re aimJuly - August 2012

ing for eight cycles of 30 second sprints for a total of four minutes of the hardest work you’ll ever do. The intensity will vary greatly, from person to person, heart to heart, but the results that Mercola is reporting are the stuff that fitness dreams are made of. Based on the latest research, Mercola says that pushing your heart rate into your target zone — your anaerobic threshold — and holding it there for 20-30 seconds is the only way to activate your super-fast muscle fibers and naturally boost your production of growth hormone (HGH), the holy grail of healthy aging. Anaerobic training also changes your biochemistry in a quick, efficient way that helps you regulate your blood sugar and levels of insulin. “Normalizing your insulin level,” says Mercola, “is the most important factor for optimizing your overall health and preventing disease of all kinds, from diabetes, to heart disease, to cancer and everything in between.” 59

fter months of searching, you’ve finally landed an interview for the job of your dreams. You’ve chosen your wardrobe, Googled the company so you can intelligently discuss the issues, and thought

“Recruiters and executives who are actively hiring, will tell you that there are three types of questions they get: no questions, bad questions, and rarely, memorable questions,” says Andrew Sobel, co-author of Power Questions: Build Relationships, Win New Business, and Influence Others. “Candidates who ask memorable questions are often the ones that receive job offers. By asking questions — not just any questions but thought-provoking ones — you come across as a cut above the average candidate. You can tell people all day long how qualified you are, how talented you are, and what a tremendous asset to the company you would be,” adds Sobel. “But no statement is ever as impactful as a welltimed, well-executed question. In all situations, power questions help us connect and engage with others in meaningful ways.” He advises to avoid these types of questions in a job interview: • Informational questions: Don’t take up a manager’s time asking, “How much vacation will I get?” Get the basic information

you need before you go in for an interview. • Closed-ended questions: If someone can give a “yes” or “no” answer, it diminishes your prospects for having a good conversation. • “Me” questions: An executive is interested in how you will add value to her organization and whether or not you’re a good fit. Skip questions like “I skydive every Saturday — so will I ever be asked to work weekends?” Here are the kinds of questions you should be asking in a job interview, according to Sobel: Credibility-building questions: “As I think back to my experience in managing large sales forces, I’ve found there are typically three barriers to breakthrough sales performance: coordination of the sales function with marketing and manufacturing, customer selection, and product quality. In your case, do you think any of these factors are holding back your sales growth? What do you believe are your own greatest opportunities for increasing sales effectiveness?” “Why?” questions: “Why did you close down your parts business rather than try to find a buyer for it?” or “Why did you decide to move from a functional to a product-based organization structure?” Personal understanding questions: “I understand you joined the organization five years ago. With all the growth you’ve had, how do you find the experience of working here now compared to when you started?” Passion questions: “What do you love most about working here?” Value-added advice questions: “Have you considered creating an July - August 2012

online platform for your top account executives, so that they can share success stories and collaborate better around key client opportunities? We implemented such a concept a year ago, and it’s been very successful.” Future-oriented questions: “You’ve achieved large increases in productivity over the last three years. Where do you believe future operational improvements will come from?” Aspiration questions: “As you look ahead to the next couple of years, what are the potential growth areas that people are most excited about in the company?” Organizational culture questions: “What are the most common reasons why new hires don’t work out here?” or “What kinds of people really thrive in your organization?” Decision-making questions: “If you were to arrive at two final candidates with equal experience and skills, how would you choose one over the other?” Company strengths-andweaknesses questions: “Why do people come to work for you rather than a competitor? And why do you think they stay?” In general, says Sobel, good questions prove you’ve done your homework. They show you’re not just concerned about yourself but that you’ve given some thought to the future of the company. They allow you to demonstrate your knowledge without sounding arrogant. And they greatly improve your chances that the interviewer will like you — and we tend to hire those we like! “If you want to be noticed by recruiters, don’t talk more,” he summarizes. Instead, ask better questions. You’ll soon find yourself answering the best question of all: How soon can you start? ∆

HEALTH THREATS— From Pg. 53 ing confusion, unconsciousness, seizures, and serious and life-threatening drops in blood pressure. Whether you are young or old, healthy or suffer from chronic illnesses, be prudent in dealing with sultry summer days. During this time of the year, even an elite athlete can collapse and die from heat exposure. If you develop a headache, become lightheaded or have any of the symptoms described above, get out of the heat and drink plenty of fluids. Call 911 if the person becomes confused, disoriented or collapses. Even if it’s extremely hot, it does not mean that you must spend all your time indoors. Don’t go outside during the hot-

test time of the day, and in a serious heat wave, be sure to drink liberal amounts of fluids, avoid alcohol and caffeine (a potent diuretic), and find out if any of the medications you are taking can increase the risk of dehydration and heatstroke. Never exercise during the hottest time of the day and always carry plenty of water. If the heat is blaring, take some time to check on the older people in your life. Remember, they are particularly susceptible to heat-related health problems. Make sure that they have adequate air conditioning and are coping well with the heat. Follow this simple advice and everyone should be able to survive the summer without health hazards. ∆

Plus, reaching out a helping hand to someone who isn’t as fortunate as you tends to quash selfish impulses and highlight your own blessings. Giving of yourself doesn’t have to involve money, either — remember that your time, talents, and compassion are just as valuable as cash, if not more so. “To put it simply, givers are happy people,” asserts Patkin. “You’re busy, but make the effort to do something nice to help another person or organization. Whether you’re giving time, energy, money, or encouragement, being generous will build up your self-esteem, broaden your perspective, keep you anchored in reality, and connect you to your blessings .” July - August 2012

Deepen Your Relationship with Your “Higher Power” Believing in something bigger than yourself is essential to developing the kind of perspective you need to be happy. Whether you consider your Higher Power to be God, Yahweh, Allah, Buddha, Krishna, the Universe, or even just Nature or another entity, being willing and able to see and feel His (or Her) presence in your life will enable you to move away from self-centeredness and focus your energy and concerns on the greater community. But grateful people are happier and healthier. Studies have shown that thankful individuals are 25 percent healthier too! “It’s important to be aware of all of your blessings, and to honor and thank those whom you owe for them. Once you start recording your blessings, you’ll probably be amazed by how long the list of people you have to thank for them is. And the hu

mility that comes from knowing you owe so much to so many others will spur you to give back more often.” Make a choice. Do you want to put in the effort to build a happier life for yourself and your children as well? (your kids are likely to grow up conforming to the example you set) If so, you can look forward to an enriched future with confidence. Or will you to take path of least resistance and allow life’s unpredictability to dictate your unhappiness? “Happiness is something that’s largely within your control,” concludes Patkin. “No, you’ll never wake up and have the ‘perfect’ day with everything going just the way you’d like it to. But you can choose how you respond to life… and that will make all the difference!” ∆
