Why Resolutions Fizzle Dottie Dehart

I

t’s March already and If you’re like 92 percent of Americans, your new year resolutions are long forgotten. What’s more, you know it. What you may not know, says Brian Moran, co-author along with Michael Lennington of the New York Times best seller The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks Than Others Do in 12 Months, is why.

March - April 2014

18

“The number one enemy of most New Year’s resolutions isn’t feasibility, a lack of know-how, or even a lack of motivation, though those things can come into play,” says Moran. “The number one enemy of most resolutions is time.” It’s all too easy to procrastinate through January, February, March, and even longer. No problem, you think. I have over half a year left to do what I said I’d do. Even when July and August roll around, there are still enough months left in the year that you don’t feel a real sense of urgency. Next thing you know, the holidays are almost upon you. You’re still over your ideal weight, drinking too many sodas a day, working the same job,

19

Hi Class Living

with less savings than you’d like. Too late to do anything now, you figure. I’ll try again next year. “For many people, this depressing chain of events recycles on a yearly basis because far-away deadlines allow — even encourage — us to be slack on execution,” comments Moran. “Give yourself too much time and you will procrastinate. It’s just human nature.” Ultimately, says Moran, effective execution happens daily and weekly and on a consistent basis. To perform at your best, you will need to get out of “annual mode” and stop thinking in terms of a 365 day year. That’s where the 12 Week Year comes in. It’s a system that works for businesses striving to meet their goals — and it will work for you, too. “When you redefine the concept of a year, your life will change,” promises Moran. “A year is no longer 12 months; it is now only 12 weeks, followed by the next 12 Week Year, ad infinitum. Each 12 week period stands on its own. “You no longer have the luxury of putting off critical activities, thinking there is ‘plenty of time’ left to meet your goals,” he adds. “When you have only 12 weeks, each week matters, each day matters, each moment matters. And the result is profound.” Here, Moran offers eight ways to get yourself out of the annualized thinking trap — and into the much-more-productive 12 Week Year, where resolutions do come true: Realize that success is created in the moment According to Moran, most of us have a skewed definition of success. We see it as the end of the road: the completion of a project, the day you’re finally able to button your old pants, receive an award, etc. However, he argues, true success isn’t any of those things. It isn’t a list of all the clients you brought in over the course of a year, or the number you see when you stand on the scale on December 31. It isn’t something that happens only once at the March - April 2014

end of a planning cycle. “Success is all of the little things you do throughout the year to make your goals happen: reaching out to X number of prospects a day or getting up on cold mornings to run when you’d rather stay in bed,” he explains. “You just can’t reach your full potential if you put off critical activities. Success does not happen monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or once a year; it happens daily, ultimately moment by moment. You succeed — or not — long before the results show it. When you adopt this definition of success, you’ll want to make the most of your time, not squander it. And the 12 Week Year can help.” Redefine your relationship with deadlines Most of us see deadlines as the bad guy. They’re always looming on the horizon, overshadowing our peace of mind and hassling us to work faster, or else. They make us nervous, resentful, or both. But what would happen if we thought of deadlines as good guys instead? “Deadlines aren’t sinister in and of themselves — we only feel that way about them when we aren’t on track to meet them or when they’re unreasonable,” Moran asserts. “But realistic deadlines are actually great motivators. They are tools that can help you to hone your focus, increase your efficiency, and realize your full potential. When you think about deadlines this way, it makes sense to have more of them, not less! They can help you to create endof-year energy, focus, and commitment throughout the year.” Put a little less faith in your yearly planner In other words, be realistic about your ability to plan ahead. Life — including what we want out of it — can (and often does) change in an instant. What you thought you wanted for yourself in January might not be what makes the most sense by the time July, or October, or December rolls around. Your circumstances and abili- 28

here’s no doubt that the most powerful material resource and tool in the human body is our mind.

The largest study ever done on cognitive thinking showed that even a minimal amount of brain exercise performed by older adults significantly helped their mind’s agility and performance for 10 years, according to the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, in which the findings were published. Nearly 3,000 adults with an average age of 74 engaged in brain training that involved only 10 to 12 sessions lasting 60 to 75 minutes each. The results were remarkable. Five years later, researchers discovered that these individuals outperformed untrained counterparts in reasoning skills, processing speed and memory — though the latter waned a bit in the following five years. This study has shown one more angle of what we know is evident through human observation and behavior: The mind plays a colossal part in our health and fitness. Use it or lose it! Consider some of the benefits of positive thinking and optimism alone, according to the Mayo Clinic: • Increased life span. • Lower rates of depression. • Lower levels of distress. • Greater resistance to the common cold. • Better psychological and physical well-being. • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease. • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress.” In the August edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers reviewed 16 studies spanning 30 years that examined patients’ attitudes toward health. They collectively

23

Hi Class Living

pointed to the conclusion that an optimistic attitude can do wonders for healing and recovery, too, according to ABC News. Regarding this latest study, a version of the trial’s speed training program is commercially available through the brain fitness company Posit Science, but there are brain exercises that are available to most of us right now and that don’t require our purchasing any mind games. Neurologist and neuropsychologist Bernard Croisile, who pioneered a brain training concept and mental fitness games available at www.happy-neuron.com, told AskMen that he recommends five daily brain exercises, which are good for both genders and nearly all ages. Based upon the five main cognitive functions — memory, attention, language, visual-spatial skills and executive function — Croisile recommends stimulating and challenging each area to stay mentally sharp as we and our brains age: • By choosing a song you don’t know and memorizing its lyrics, you boost the level of the brainbuilding chemical acetylcholine. (You can also memorize Scripture or poetry.) • Change your routine or combine activities — such as listening to an audiobook while jogging or doing math in your head while driving — to increase your attention span. • Increase your vocabulary by reading something of a greater intellectual caliber than what you typically read or know. Understanding the new words in context will build your language skills. • Enhance your visual-spatial abilities by picking out five things in any setting in our great, colorful three-dimensional world, and then recall those things and March - April 2014

their locations a few times later in the day. • Engage in some strategy and problemsolving situations (real or imaginary, yes, even through video games); your intellectual performance will expand your executive function. We often speak about the power that our thinking has on our physical health. But let’s not forget the influence of the slightest exercise on our mental health, too. Any aerobics help the neural pathways and other connections in our brain. John J. Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of “A User’s Guide to the Brain,” explained to WebMD: “I like to say that exercise is like taking a little Prozac or a little Ritalin at just the right moment. Exercise is really for the brain, not the body. It affects mood, vitality, alertness and feelings of well-being.” And then there’s the example of Stephen C. Putnam, who took up canoeing to fight the symptoms of adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and ended up writing a book about the benefits of exercise for brain disorders, “Nature’s Ritalin for the Marathon Mind.” Bottom line — as NBC News’ chief medical editor, Nancy Snyderman, explained: “This mind-body connection that we have been toying with for the past couple of decades really does have hard science behind it.” With 76 million baby boomers in the U.S. going into retirement and advancing into old age, this is a timely reminder about the muscle in mental health. It’s what the writer of Proverbs wrote more than two millenniums ago: “As a person thinks, so he or she is.”∆

illions of consumers were affected by the hack involving Target and Neiman Marcus retailers. Before you become a victim of identity theft, learn how to guard against it.

Identity theft expert Scott A. Merritt, author of “Identity Theft Do’s and Don’ts,” offers the following tips: Understand how and where it happens

Identity theft is like being robbed when you are away from home; most thefts occur in places where you do business every day. Either a place of business is robbed, a bad employee acts improperly or a hacker breaches the office through the computer. Secure your wallet’s information

Photocopy everything in your wallet: photos, credit cards (front and back), membership cards – everything.

Hi Class Living

Put the copies in the order the cards are arranged in your wallet, staple the pictures and place them in a strong box or safe.

When planning a bank visit, have items such as deposits and withdrawal slips prepared in advance.

Make sure your information is consistent For all of your identity and financial documents, make absolutely sure, to the smallest detail, that all of your personal information is accurate and consistent! Discrepancies such as using your middle initial on some documents, and not others, or having different addresses, can wreck havoc in proving your identity, and can compromise your credit score.

Account for your interactions with vendors Every time you speak to someone with whom you do business, write down the time, date, name and the purpose or outcome of the call. If an identity theft occurs on the vendor’s end, you will be able to reference these prior conversations effectively. Be sure to note any animosity or reluctance from the vendor.

Secure your digital habits and data Change your passwords at least twice a year on a non-scheduled basis – don’t be predictable. Have a strong firewall if you shop online, and only access sites that are protected by a strong firewall and high industry standards. Access accounts of a financial nature only from your personal computer. Protect your banking information While in the bank, keep account numbers and other data out of sight, and avoid stating account numbers, Social Security numbers and similar information out loud.

Don’t carry around your birth certificate or Social Security card Unless it’s necessary, keep those vital items in a safe, or at least a firebox. If you know someone is going to need a copy of your tax returns or your driver’s license, for example, make the copies ahead of time. This avoids the need for a firm’s employee to leave the room with such information. “Of course, you can greatly reduce being a victim of such recent hacks that occurred at the major retailers by using cash more often,” he says. “But if you’re going to use credit, use a card from a national bank or a national credit union and never a debit card, no exceptions.” ∆

WHY RESOLUTIONS FIZZLE — From Pg. 20 ties may have changed. The truth is, even can reliably plan. There’s a much stronger the most thoroughly thought-out annual connection between the actions you take plans are based on assumptions that are today and the results you want to achieve, stacked upon earlier assumptions, which because you don’t have to take as much of are stacked on even earlier assumptions the future on faith. Who wants to waste — and a lot can (and often does) change time going partway down a certain path, only to realize that you were mistaken and from start to finish. “Once you realize that there’s just not should have taken a different turn?” enough predictability to make annualKeep score ized planning effective, the 12 Week Year As Moran has noted, it’s relatively easy begins to make a lot more sense,” Moran comments. “Personally and profession- to ignore or rationalize procrastination and ally, 12 weeks is about as far out as you low productivity when you have to 37 March - April 2014

here’s no question that moving to a less expensive home can reap financial benefits, both in terms of a profit on the sale of your current home, as well as ongoing savings on monthly expenses. However, from deciding where you’ll move next to weighing the emotional attachment that you and your kids may have to the family home, there’s a lot to consider. Before you decide when and if you want to make such a big move, I suggest that you start by crunching some numbers.

nity, so run several scenarios. Will you buy a smaller single-family home or a condo? Would you consider renting? Plug in some rough numbers for each scenario, includ-

ADD UP THE TOTAL MONTHLY COST OF YOUR CURRENT HOME Start by calculating what you spend each month to live in your current home. Your mortgage may be the biggest expense, but don’t stop there. Add in property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and utilities. Remember costs for water and garbage collection. Now estimate what you spend yearly for upkeep, not only for the physical repairs but also what you may pay to a gardener or housekeeper. ing possible property taxes, condo fees, upkeep, insurance and so forth, to determine how much you could realistically lower your monthly expenses. CALCULATE THE PROFIT ON SELLING YOUR CURRENT HOME Housing has been rebounding in many parts of the country, but don’t make assumptions. I suggest consulting with a local realtor who knows your market and can show you recent comparable sales in your area. Realize, too, that if prices are up for your home, prices are probably up for any other home you might purchase, unless you plan to move to a less costly area.

Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

DON’T FORGET THAT YOU MIGHT OWE CAPITAL GAINS TAXES With an idea of what your house may sell for, you can pretty easily calculate possible capital gains taxes. And here’s where you might be pleasantly surprised. Under current law, if you sell your principal residence for a profit, up to $500,000 of capital gains is tax-free for a married couple filing a joint return ($250,000 for an individual). So you might have no capital gains tax bill at all. Of course, there are a couple of stipulations: • You have to have owned the house for two years. • You have to have lived in the house as your principal residence for two out of the past five years. If you meet these two criteria, the next step is to calculate your cost basis. This is your purchase price plus associated fees for both the purchase and sale, such as settlement fees, closing costs, com- 54

Do-Over Trends For 2014 Sharon Mosley

ost of us don’t get rid of clothes just because a new fashion season has arrived. Instead, we mix in a few fresh looks. But this year, there are lots of fashion trends from 2013 that continue to pop up in stores and online.

Prints and more prints Graphic prints are still making style news. Colorblocking is going to continue this spring, and of course, florals will bloom in the warmer months ahead. Mixing and matching designs like polka dots with stripes will still play a big role in the coming season. Metallics That slinky copper sequined dress you wore on New Year’s Eve will still be a big hit. The bronzes, golds and silvers shine in everything from ready-to-wear to stilettos and handbags. I predict White lace dress from Lauren Ralph Lauren at Bloomingdale’s.

that metallics will become a year-round staple in our wardrobe, much like animal prints have. Black and white This classic combo never goes out of style. For spring and summer, you’ll see it in graphic designs that look fresh and modern. You can’t go wrong with this alltime fashion favorite. The motorcycle jacket It will still be around for chilly spring days and nights. Just lighten up those layers underneath, and you’ll be set. You’ll wear it for years to come. Lace We’ve seen it all-over in chic cocktail sheaths. We’ve seen it in T-shirts. Lace is another winner for all occasions – whether we wear it to gala balls or out to a casual dinner. Black lace is always a stunner, but colorful versions of the little lace dress are even more fun for spring and summer. Crop it The “midi” calf length is still a stylish option in both dresses and pants. Just replace those boots with pointed flat shoes. Reboot 2013 was the year of the thigh-high. But don’t give up on the lean and mean trend you wore with all those skinny jeans and leggings. Boots — from shoe boots to the rocking western boot to the biker boot and the over-the-knee boot — will continue, even in lighter, summarized versions, so stock up now. Bold color Most of us are adding some color into our wardrobes, finally. Emerald green was the color of 2013, and it promises to keep going strong. We may be tempted to think pink and purple in 2014, but whatever your favorite color, go for it. It just makes life more interesting. ∆

WHY RESOLUTIONS— From Pg. 28 look at the numbers only once a year. But when you start measuring your productivity, progress, and performance on a more frequent basis, you can’t hide behind the illusion that the present moment isn’t important. Measurement drives the execution process because it creates productive tension, or the uncomfortable feeling you get when you know you’re not doing the things you need to do. “As the CEO of your own life, you need to have the courage to measure your performance in the areas that matter,” Moran says. “That’s much easier when your goals and tasks are broken down into 12 week increments. Effective scorekeeping prevents you from rationalizing lackluster results and forces you to confront the reality of your situation, even when it’s uncomfortable. While this can be difficult, the sooner you confront reality, the sooner you can shift your actions toward producing more desirable results.”

Be honest about your track record How many promises and commitments do you welsh on in the course of 12 months? Probably more than you’d like to admit to. The fact is, at the beginning of the year, it’s all too easy to make promises and commitments. “Sure, honey, we can remodel the kitchen this year.” “Of course our department will reduce its operating costs by 15 percent this year.” Frequently, though, we fall short of our personal and professional commitments because over the course of 12 months, we encounter unforeseen obstacles, our priorities change, or our interest wanes. “If you don’t want to be seen as someone who breaks commitments, drops the ball, and flakes, it makes sense to ditch annualized thinking,” Moran comments. “It’s much easier to say you’re going to do something — and then do it — within a 12 week time frame. With these working habits, your results are not left up to chance. They are high in quality, and 45

Think about your individual fashion personality. Are you a follower of fads? Do you favor the tried and true classics? Do you love those romantic flowing dresses or prefer to dress like you’re always headed to the beach? Think about your lifestyle. You may be rocker chic at heart, but if you’ve got three kids and doing the mom and carpool thing, you may not want to stock your wardrobe with leather leggings and motorcycle jackets. The dress code at your workplace will also determine much of your style personality. However, remember: Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent or a high-powered lawyer, you can always add a twist of your own uniqueness to any “uniform” you choose. It’s worth taking the time to define your own style personality. Believe it or not, it makes it much easier to clean out that closet and then go shopping. Here are a few tips to get you started in determining your current style: Classic Chic Think Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn. This fashion personality is all Koshie O. March - April 2014

about wearing the traditional basics but with a fresh twist. Neutral colors like cream, camel and black are usually your favorite hues. Your wardrobe may consist of streamlined classics like white shirts, black trousers, pencil skirts and trench coats. You always have a little black dress in your closet. Flats or classic pumps are your go-to shoes; pearls your go-to jewelry; and structured handbags are de rigueur. Boho Chic Cher may be an icon of this style, but there are plenty of fashionable free spirits out there to show you the way. There always seems to be an “artistic” vibe to this personality’s clothes. You love to shop at museums or street markets for your jewelry, and you love to wear freeflowing tops and skirts that make a colorful statement. Flip-flops or sandals may be your summer shoes of choice. Fashionista Chic Think the stylish Anna Wintour for this personality. ime to run for cover and check out the latest swimwear cover-ups that are getting rave reviews on and off the beach. Designers are showing new ways to step out of the pool and join the party. So if you’re not into hanging out in that bikini all day, here are some of the best ways to wrap up for fun in the sun and not worry about the lumps and bumps most of us encounter along the way. Start with a dress Yes, swimwear designers have taken a cue from casual clothing favorites and given us all a way to mix it up this year. That little v-neck knit dress you bought last year can now be found snuggled between the bathing suits at your local department store. Loaded with color, these little dresses are the hit of summer, and they are as easy to throw on over a swimsuit as they are to wear on their own. Snatch these up in several colors. in stripes, prints and geometric designs. Long skirts paired with swimwear tops are another stylish way to layer on a little modesty in mixed company. Add details Beads, crochet and lace are just some of the ways that cover-ups take on a more glamorous look. Yes, you can wear these tops over your swimsuit or on their own. Punch it up with ponchos There are so many variations on this theme. And you do have to think about just how much you want to cover up to make these work. Sheer tunics that are longer are often a better alternative. However, breezy caftans and kimono styles are also fun to mix and match with swimwear, shorts and short or long skirts. Don’t forget scarves Think sarongs and pareos are perfect for the beach. Try to find large scarves in soft cotton — the batiks from Indonesia are great, but you can also find the decorative scarves in areas that cater to tourists. There are lots of ways to wear these sarongs, but the easiest is to tie them around your waist — hoping you have swimwear or something else underneath. Or you can tie it above your bust. Or just wear it over your shoulders to dinner over your maxi dress. Have a pajama party What could be more comfortable than wearing your pajamas to the beach? Some of the best ways to cover-up while soaking up the sun this summer are roomy knit pants – just like your pjs. For even more fun, try a pair of harem pants. Just 63

Stop saying “have to” and start saying “choose to” As you pursue a long-term goal, it’s all too easy for your daily tactics to turn into daily have-tos. “I have to go to the gym.” “I have to spend an extra half-hour working on this project for my boss.” “I have to use that money to pay down my credit card, even if it means skipping a night out with my friends.” That’s a problem, because have-tos quickly turn into things we loathe — and if you loathe the things you need to do to accomplish a goal, you’re less likely to reach the finish line. “There are no have-tos in life,” Moran asserts. “Everything we do in life is a choice. And when you look at tactics as choosetos instead of have-tos, you’ll notice a big change in your attitude and motivation. Instead of feeling burdened and put-upon, you’ll feel empowered. Admit it: saying, ‘I choose to attend night classes so I can rise in my field’ feels a lot better than saying, ‘I have to attend night classes so I won’t be stuck in this job forever.’”

In furniture, lilac is paired with rich dark wood finishes, clear acrylic and white. Other popular colors are Chinese red (a bright shade with a hint of orange), deep blues inspired by peacock feathers and punches of chrome yellow and gray. Gray has become the new neutral, replacing beige tones. Today’s grays are warm (almost taupe), which makes them easier to incorporate into decor than cooler shades of gray. ‘60s flashbacks The “Mad Men” influence continues, with many furniture styles that evoke the swinging ‘60s. Prints are big and bold, especially on chairs, where “statement fabrics” are the look du jour. Think big butterflies, oversized florals and Asian-inspired dragons. Other ‘60s influences include bold geometric patterns, in both upholstery and wall coverings, cut-velvet fabrics, modular furniture and Lucite. Lucite is combined with traditional elements, such as a Lucite coffee table paired with a classic wing chair, and animal-print upholstery with Lucite legs. Other retro furniture details include tufting, channel-quilting, contrast cording, buttons and nailheads. Metal of the moment All that glitters is now gold. Gold dominates light fixtures and furniture hardware, in both shiny and brushed finishes, overtaking pewter and brushed nickel. Gold also reentered the palette for fabrics, in a golden Gray has become the new neutral. March - April 2014

Your adviser can help you invest in keeping with your retirement goals and timeframe. CONSIDER THE EMOTIONAL SIDE Beyond the numbers, I’d give serious thought to how comfortable you’ll be in a smaller place, and how this move might impact your family. There are often a lot of feelings attached to a family home. Be sure to bring those out in the open, so that when you do make a move, you’ll be able to enjoy not only the potential financial benefits of your new home but also the pleasure you get from living in it every day. ∆

to go. Another choice, particularly if you are hiring the designer to help you from beginning to end, is to purchase the furnishings through him. The fee is included in the price of the furniture and, in this case, you really won’t feel any more pain of payment. If you were purchasing the items yourself, you wouldn’t be paying any less. Now, at least, you have the benefit of a designer without extra cost to you. How do you find your perfect designer? There are several ways. You can browse through design magazines and find pictures of rooms that attract you, then search for the designer’s names in the credits. Hiring that designer works well if he is in your city, but could get expensive if from out of town because you would also be responsible for travel and lodging expenses. Another way is to interview designers in your area. After a bit of conversation and discussion about your needs and what the designer’s thoughts are, you and the designer will know if the fit is good – or not. A third way is to call your local chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) for suggestions. What do you need to do to prepare? First, you are going to want to collect samples even if they aren’t the final choice. The samples will help you articulate the look you want. Pictures from magazines are a perfect start so you can show the designer the type of look that pleases you. Have several pictures ready. If you would like, go to paint stores or home stores and select paintcolor samples. Even if you select 20 or 30 of them, just pick colors you like. It will get the ball rolling. You can also have pictures of rooms you do not like so the designer knows what to avoid. This isn’t mandatory, but it can be helpful. If you have pieces that you want to keep, be sure the designer knows you aren’t going to part with them. The designer needs to know about such 62 58

A Buddha fountain bathes in an LED glow.

njures Up Magic

Debbie Arrington

“You want to make it magic,” Sestak said. “You don’t want to see the wires or the glare of bulbs. Lighting is supposed to illuminate space. It’s all about placement. That affects what you see and how you see it.” And with LEDs, there are a lot more options on where lights can go. LEDs — light-emitting diodes — are coming into their own, pushed

61

by both industry innovation and recent federal mandates to develop energy-saving alternatives to traditional incandescent bulbs. The nationwide switch to more efficient lighting not only saves electricity, it offers opportunities to put lighting in different places in different ways. “The technology behind lighting is different, but we still see it as light,” Sestak said. “We’ve also become increasingly aware of the cost of lighting when we open our electric bill.” Energy costs have everyone paying more attention to lighting options. While more expensive to install, LEDs can save a lot of money over their long lifetimes. Sestak’s own house in Carmichael, Calif., is a prime example of what can be done with LEDs. For example, the path to the pool and outdoor bar is lit with 25 in-ground LED fixtures that can put on a colorful light show. More LEDs turn glass plates into a fanciful sculpture. After dark, they make glass ornaments sparkle and the water in bubbling fountains glisten. These little lights make the nighttime garden come to life. Indoors, LEDs work their electronic magic, too. In the living room, they offer pinpoint spotlights to accent paintings and sculpture. Tucked under cabinets, they brighten kitchen counters. Behind glass plates in the master bath, they seem to light mirrors from within. Sestak uses other energy-saving options, too. Over the dinner table, halogen spot-

lights on a circular track create an unusual chandelier. The lights make ribbon-hung glass ornaments dazzle. At the same time, diners can still comfortably see their food, thanks to other lights focused at the table. “In this chandelier, it catches the light instead of being illuminated from within,” Sestak explained. “Other lights illuminate the center of the table like a little stage.” Lighting is all show — you want the ‘aha’ factor that you get with the right light in the right setting. Consumers also are learning more about the science of lighting. LEDs offer a lot of lumens along with exceptionally long life and energy savings. For example, Phillips introduced a 17watt LED bulb that offers as much light as a 75-watt incandescent bulb, and lasts 25,000 hours. The easiest transition to make with LEDs are lights that are hard to reach, such as a ceiling fixture, You put one of these LED bulbs in and you’ll never have to get the ladder out again. Outdoor lighting holds its own challenges. Fixtures may not only be hard to reach, they can get wet. They’re exposed to weather. Wiring can be nibbled by animals. The idea of expanding light into the backyard is great, but you’re dealing with electricity and you need to know how to handle it safely. Some designers bill for local travel time and others don’t. Be sure you know what you will be asked to pay for. This is particularly true if you are paying by the hour. If you are purchasing all the furnishings through the designer, travel time should not be charged as long as it is local. Be ready to think outside the box and be ready to keep an open mind. TURN YOUR BALCONY — From Pg. 65 says starting a balcony garden needn’t cost much. Start with the right materials and choose plants that are right for your conditions, and you’ll soon be eating from the pots on your porch. He offers these tips especially for balcony gardeners: Plant the right plants for the amount of sunlight you have: Most herbs and vegetables require six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. So what do you do if you have just one balcony and it doesn’t get that much sun? • Choose edibles that can take partial sun/ shade (three to six hours of sun in the morning or early afternoon) or light shade (two to three hours of direct sun or lightly shaded all day.) Some partial shade herbs: cilantro and parsley (both prefer cooler weather); dill, bee balm, spearmint chamomile. Some light shade herbs: garlic chives, peppermint, rosemary. Some partial or light shade veggies: lettuce, broccoli, green onion, collards, cabbage, peas, carrots, strawberries, beans, sweet potatoes. • Remember, pale-colored surfaces increase the light your plants receive. Plants in regions with short growing seasons usually need the full six to eight hours of light per day. Choose the right pots: • Bigger pots require less water and are less likely to blow over on high-rise balconies where the winds can be fierce. Terra cotta allows moisture to escape fairly quickly, which is helpful for people who like to water a lot. Non-porous plastic or glazed pots hold water longer and are better for windy balconies, where soil

dries out quickly. Use brightly colored containers to add style and visual interest to your garden. • Most vegetable plants require even watering — don’t let them dry out completely and don’t keep them soggy. Apply water directly to the soil. • Make sure your containers have drainage holes or a drainage system. If they have an attached tray to catch excess water, don’t allow the plants’ roots to sit in the water, which promotes rot and fungus. Either empty the tray regularly, or use a design that holds the water away from the roots. Use the right dirt: • It’s important to use dirt that allows for good drainage. Most edible plants don’t like to sit in wet dirt, and soil without good drainage tends to become compacted – a difficult medium for plants that like to stretch their roots out. You can buy a sterile soilless potting mix, a soil-based potting mix, or mix up your own batch using 1 part compost, 1 part perlite and 1 part potting soil. • Don’t use garden soil or top soil, which won’t allow adequate drainage. • On windy balconies, top-dress your container with small rocks to keep the soil from drying out so quickly. Joulus offers one more tip for high-rise dwellers: Rely on self-pollinating plants, or plants that don’t need pollination by insects, unless you’re willing to handpollinate. “You likely won’t see many bees buzzing around the 40th story,” he says. Don’t worry about pollination for root vegetables, like carrots and potatoes. Some self-pollinators include beans, peas, tomatoes and peppers. ∆

n recent years, more and more information has been indicating the tremendous benefits nuts have on improving health.

The most encouraging report showed that adding nuts to your diet either prevented weight gain or promoted weight loss. Researchers have found dieters who consume an ounce of nuts daily are more likely to eat less at supper and, therefore, lose weight. And now, from a large population study, comes remarkable evidence that nut consumption reduces the risk of heart disease in both men and women by as much as 50 percent. 76

Gravity Is

Your Life Line

G

ravity isn’t just the name of a movie. Gravity is also the best-kept secret for living longer, and stronger, with more energy and a lower risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. In the ‘90s, Dr. Joan Vernikos and her NASA space program team faced a tough medical issue: When perfectly fit astronauts go into space — a gravity-fee environment — they quickly show signs of accelerated aging. Their overall health deteriorates. Their bones weaken. Their muscles weaken. They begin to show each other pictures of their grandchildren. When the astronauts return to Earth, their strength returns, their bones stop deteriorating and fitness returns. Dr. Vernikos explains: “The lack of gravity in space wreaks havoc on the body... On Earth, gravity is our life line... it centers

75

us and grounds us... the gravity factor is present to stimulate every cell, every nerve in our body... it etches images in our brain that tells us where we are in relation to our environment... All this rapidly disappears in space... in a gravity-free environment.” Earthly sitting is a form of weightlessness. It brings us dangerously close to a gravity-free environment, she says, and we “sitanauts” are doing more and more of it every day, for typically eight to 10 hours, in our cars and couches, at our desks and dining tables, in front of big and small screens. “The less we move, the less we use gravity,” she explains. Modern conveniences and technology may be making our lives easier, but our sedentary lifestyles are making us sick. And here’s the kicker: Time in the gym, even working out three to five times a week, cannot make up for the negative results that come from disengaging with gravity. “We’ve struggled for decades to exercise more and eat less,” says Vernikos. “We’re fatter, sicker, more tired and more out of pocket than ever. Some of us even exercise strenuously. Yet, the way we live is slowly killing us.” Which is why she wrote a book called “Sitting Kills, Moving Heals: How Everyday Movement Will Prevent Pain, Illness,

and Early Death — And Exercise Alone Won’t.” Strap on your harness and prepare for liftoff — it’s a mind-blower. When you sit, you’re essentially disconnecting from the “life line” that is gravity. When you get up and change your position — and this is the finding that dazzled her most of all — you’re reconnecting with gravity in ways that promote health and wellness. It’s the change of position that is most powerful and matters most, Vernikos says. “The results amazed me! Standing was more effective than walking! ” “To reverse the damage of sedentary living,” Vernikos advises, “put gravity back in your life.” How? Do frequent nonstrenuous activities throughout the day. Stand up every 10 to 15 minutes, bend and twist, take the stairs, wash the car, empty the dishwasher. You get the picture. “Our bodies need perpetual motion,” says Vernikos. “The good news is that there are unlimited free opportunities for movement all around us. The key to lifelong health is more than just traditional gym exercise an hour a day, three to five days a week. “The answer is to rediscover a lifestyle of constant, natural, low-intensity nonexercise movement that uses the gravity vector throughout the day.”∆

THE BENEFITS OF NUTS — From Pg. 72 A massive study recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that increasing nut intake also reduces the risk of many chronic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes. It appears to reduce risk of death, too. Research showed that compared to those who never ate nuts, those who did once weekly had a 7 percent lower risk of dying, gradually reducing risk even more as they consumed more nuts. For those eating nuts at least once a day, the risk of death was lowered by a remarkable 20 percent. And further analysis revealed significant reduc-

tions in the risk of heart and respiratory diseases, diabetes, infections and cancer. There was some concern at the outset of the study that daily nut consumption could lead to weight gain. The exact opposite turned out to be the case. Those eating nuts most frequently either maintained their weight or lost weight during the course of the study. Nut-eaters were overall healthier: They were less likely to be obese, had lower waist circumferences, lower cholesterols and blood-sugar levels than their counterparts not eating nuts. They also ate less, consumed more fruits

March - April 2014

and vegetables, and exercised more regularly. For this reason, it’s unclear whether the found benefits of nuts were a result of people committed to healthier lifestyles and living longer being less concerned about their weights and, hence, more likely to eat nuts. There are many ways nuts promote health. They contain the best polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibers, and have high concentrations of antioxidants (phenols and phytosterols). Most experts recommend having an ounce of nuts as a snack in the afternoon and about two to three hours before dinner. They are calorically dense and take a long time to chew. This, in turn, helps promote satiety, as does their high calorie content. Nuts’ high level of fiber also makes you feel full and less hungry at dinnertime. Nuts make it easier to eat prudently, limiting

your risk of becoming obese and making a diet program more likely to be successful. Nuts reduce the risk of heart attacks in a number of ways. Monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids tend to lower cholesterol and decrease the risk of blood clotting. High concentrations of the amino acid arginine promote blood flow, dilate blood vessels and help maintain a lower blood pressure. And high fiber content reduces cholesterol and appears to decrease the risk of diabetes. High fiber and healthy fats in nuts also promote better gastrointestinal function and decrease the risk of colon, breast and prostate cancers. Like an apple a day, an ounce of nuts will almost certainly keep the doctor away. The best approach to dieting is not necessarily the consumption of low-calorie foods, but that learning to make the right food choices and eating in the right amounts will lead to a long and healthy life. ∆

f course your employees matter. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t hire them, trust them to do important work, or keep paying them week after week.

And if you think about it at all (which you probably don’t), you assume they realize that. It’s only logical. But according to Christine Comaford, author of the new book SmartTribes: How Teams Become Brilliant Together, you may inadvertently do and say things that make them feel otherwise—and it has little to do with logic. “Mattering is one of the three most primal human needs, along with safety and belonging,” asserts Comaford. “When employees are made to feel that they don’t matter, it happens on an emotional level, not an intellectual one. And we now know that emotions, not intellect, drive 90 percent of human behavior. “The really bad news for leaders is that when employees feel they don’t matter, they simply cannot function at their highest level of performance,” she adds. When leaders say or do something that makes employees feel insignificant, frightened or isolated, they revert to the fight/flight/freeze part of the March - April 2014

You don’t respond to their emails Sure, you’re busy, and sure, your employees know that—but the Critter State doesn’t spring from the rational part of the brain. Instead of thinking, Oh, the boss will get back to me when she has a moment, they think, “She doesn’t like my idea. She doesn’t like me. I feel rejected. I don’t matter.” “When an employee emails the boss, especially when that email asks for your approval or contains sensitive con- 86
