there are millions of ways to communicate, but few of them offer the opportunity to take part in a high quality conversation. LOL, EOD, BRB, TY, and YW might be key elements of the way to communicate in a texting, emailing, socialmedia-obsessed world, but they are not conversations. Sometimes you might not even know what your communicating counterpart is even saying to you. With communication becoming more and more diluted by technology, having a great conversation is an essential element in building strong, mutually beneficial, and even profitable relationships. March - April 2012
“Conversations are the building blocks of relationships,” says author Maribeth Kuzmeski. “Without it, we form relationships that are devoid of substance,” she adds. “Unfortunately, we live in a world where the modern MO seems to be less talking and more texting. People either think they don’t have the time or don’t think it’s necessary to take the time to have real conversations with each other. But for anyone who wants to create truly beneficial relationships, you have to stop

texting, walk away from the computer, and connect with someone one-on-one through a great conversation.” “The goal of any conversation should be to build a mutually beneficial relationship with that other person,” says Kuzmeski. “By having a conversation with someone, you’re committing to connecting with him or her for the next 10, 15, or 30 minutes or more. Follow that conversation to its conclusion, and you never know what you will find out. The point is you have

to be willing to have it in the first place, and that is something that too few of us value these days.” Here are some reasons you should remaster the art of conversation: It puts quality ahead of speed Today, you can find out almost anything you’d ever want to know in seconds. You can rattle off a text faster than you can dial someone’s number. You can send an email out to multiple contacts in a couple

someone who just wants to listen to you, wants to hear all about your day or your recent trip?” asks Kuzmeski. “Someone who is truly interested in you. You might not find them very often, but when you do, they really stick out. When you speak with someone and listen to what he or she has to say, you are showing that person you value him or her. And the wonderful thing is that in the flow of a great conversation, he or she is giving that courtesy right back to you. To me from a business perspective and in life, if someone wants to listen to what you have to say, then he or she must be a good person and someone you’d like to be around.” It is not a requirement to be the most outgoing person in the room If you’ve been using your shyness or lack of eloquence as an excuse for relying on technology for all of your communication, now’s the time to stop. “Being outgoing is not a requirement for participating in or initiating a great conversation,” explains Kuzmeski. “The only requirements are that you be authentic and show that you value what the other person has to say. You don’t have to say anything profound. You don’t have to impress people with your every word. You simply have to participate, actively listen, and be open and honest in what you say.” It’s the best way to mend a broken relationship There are some situations in business and in life that should only be handled via a conversation. The bottom line is, sometimes an email or a text just won’t cut it. Mending a broken relationship is one of those situations. “When you’re in trouble with a client or you’ve hurt a friend’s feelings, you have to get up and go see the person or, at the very least, pick up the phone and call, even when the conversation might be uncomfortable for you,” says Kuzmeski. “Have breakfast with the person. Have a lunch meeting. No matter what you 30

Now is the time to take stock of your relationships, according to Susan Apollon, author of Touched by the Extraordinary, Book Two: Healing Stories of Love, Loss & Hope. In other words, before you can fully focus on creating meaningful relationships, you need to weed out the ones that aren’t working — those that are draining your time, energy, and emotional well-being. Here’s how:
even if there is no “rational” reason to do so. “When you’re with someone and you start to feel uncomfortable — edgy or ill at ease — pay attention,” she urges. “How many times have you ignored that feeling because you wanted to trust someone else, only to regret it when you found yourself in a toxic or draining relationship? Investing For Your College
I
f you plan to invest for your grandkids college education there are four basic options: a 529 plan, a custodial account, a trust account, or simply using your own account (with the plan to make gifts to your grandchildren later).
The 529 plan The most obvious answer, but not necessarily the right one, is a 529 plan -- the popular tax-deferred vehicle for college investing. (A Coverdell Education Savings Account can offer even greater benefits, but is limited to annual contributions of no more than $2,000 and then only if you qualify based on your adjusted gross income.) In a 529 account, investment income is never taxed, as long as it’s withdrawn for “qualified” higher education expenses. Qualified means about what you’d expect: tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies. Some additional benefits of 529 plans: • You can make substantial contributions without triggering gift taxes. An individual can contribute $65,000, and a married couple can give $130,000 in a March - April 2012
single five-year period (this requires a special election on your gift tax return). • You control the assets. The child is the beneficiary, but the assets are in your name; your grandkids cannot access the money directly. • You can transfer unused assets to a wide range of family members, which could be important. Say one grandchild was college bound, but the other wasn’t; 529 plan assets could be shifted to the one headed for college without penalty. • You might get a state tax break. Some states offer tax credits for 529 contributions. So what’s not to like? Well, 529 plans offer fewer investment choices than custodial accounts or trusts, and trading and exchanges are often limited. Plus, the funds can only be used for higher
24
Grandchildren’s Education By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz
education. If you withdraw them for some other reason, you’ll pay federal and state taxes on any investment income plus a 10 percent penalty. A Custodial Account If you’re sure your grandkids will go to college, a 529 plan makes sense. But if your goal is simply to give them some financial assistance later in life, you might consider a custodial account. It’s more flexible than a 529 in terms of what you can invest in and how your grandkids can use the money. That can be a double-edged sword. You would control the investment now, but the assets must be given to the beneficiary when he or she turns 18, 21 or 25 (depending on your state and your wishes). Theoretically, your grandchild could reach
the legal age and cash out the account to buy a Ferrari, and there’d be nothing you could do about it. Earnings don’t grow tax-free as they do with a 529 plan, but a custodial account may offer a tax benefit. Under the current tax code, the first $950 of investment earnings is tax-free and the next $950 is taxed at the child’s, usually quite low, rate. After that, the marginal tax rate goes up to the parents’ rate. 86

he U.S. market for anti-aging products for appearance enhancement, is expected to grow to more than $5 billion by 2015. The U.S. weight loss market hits the scales at about $61 billion a year.
Though the science behind the claims made by this growing profusion of products and practices seems to be constantly in question, there are some common-sense approaches to slowing aging that deserve our consideration. In 2004, explorer and author Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic to further investigate what his travels had uncovered. Certain small pockets of people around the world, with seemingly little in common, shared high numbers of those living relatively disability-free lives well into their 100s. With the help of top longevity experts, they identified five distinct areas, which they labeled as “Blue Zones,” where people are 10 times likelier to reach age 100 than Americans. Working with the National Institute on Aging, they next tried to identify lifestyle components, or common denominators of practices found in all five populations, that might explain their shared longevity. What they found, detailed in Buettner ’s book “The Blue March - April 2012
Zones,” was that there are nine common characteristics of the world’s long-lived people. The full list of what Buettner and his team of experts believe people can do to add years to their lives can be found at www.BlueZones.com, but here’s a sample: Move naturally Americans burn fewer than 100 calories a day engaged in ‘exercise.’ We can get more physical activity naturally if we live in walkable communities. ... Walking is the best activity for longevity. Know your purpose People who know why they wake up in the morning live up to seven years longer than those who don’t. Know your values, passions and talents -- and how to share them on a regular basis. Downshift Chronic inflammation caused by stress is related to every major age-related disease.

Family first Living in a thriving family is worth six extra years of life expectancy. Invest time in your kids; nurture a monogamous relationship; and keep your aging parents nearby. Belong
Recommit, reconnect or explore a new faith-based community... People who show up to their faith community four times a week live an extra 4-14 years. Right tribe Your friends have a long-term and (measurable) impact on your health and longevity. Taking stock in who your friends are and expanding your social circle to include healthy-minded, supportive people might be the most powerful thing you can do to add years to your life. The project further shows that the secret
for how to live longer lies not in diets or exercise programs, but in creating the right surroundings. And you don’t have to travel to the distant corners of the earth to see its principles in action. One of the five “Blue Zones” (along with Sardinia; Okinawa, Japan; the Nicoya Peninsula; and Icaria) is located in Loma Linda, Calif. For the past half-century, members of the Seventh-day Adventist community in Loma Linda, whose faith calls for healthy living, have led the nation in the longest life expectancy, according to Buettner. They are vegetarians with a plant-based diet inspired directly from the Bible. They do not smoke, and every week, they observe the Sabbath Saturday as a “sanctuary in time.” Their social circle of fellow church members supports these cultural habits. You might want to apply some of these principles to your life. ∆

Practice the fine art of forgiveness If you’ve ever realized that a relationship was bad for you — especially if the other party treated you with malice, disrespect, or spite — you might have walked away with hard feelings. First, acknowledge your anger or resentment. Then, get rid of it through forgiveness. Refusing to forgive other people for what you perceive as their wrongs is one of the most toxic acts a person can commit against herself, while forgiveness is a function of love, says Apollon. “Forgiveness doesn’t stop with other people,” she adds. “You must also forgive yourself for any mistakes you think you may have made, including selling yourself short by accepting a less-than-ideal relationship. It may help to remind yourself that right now we are all exactly where we are supposed to be on our spiritual journeys. That doesn’t mean you should 42

Don’t feel bad about letting relationships that don’t work fall away As you begin to get more comfortable with trusting what your intuition tells you, you’ll inevitably identify relationships that are unhealthy. Your first instinct might be to try to “make it work” — after all, no one wants to hurt another’s feelings unnecessarily. Realize, though, that it’s okay to extract yourself from a negative relationship, or at least to back off and relate to the person on a more superficial level. “You’re not betraying or dishonoring the other party — you’re honoring yourself,” says Apollon. “This is something we all need to do more often.”

Winning Ways To Get Your Kids In The Game By Marilynn Preston
“H
it the ball! What’s wrong with you?” “You’re not focusing! Your baby sister could catch that ball!” “Faster, faster... you’re not even trying!” Lots of parents have no idea how to behave on the ball field when their kid is playing. They’re loud, they’re pushy, and they’re super-critical in all the wrong ways. So how should they act? Differently. Here are some tips to help you become a better soccer mom or baseball dad, so your kids don’t drop out of sports before they’ve had a chance to find the one they love: BE POSITIVE If you can’t say something nice during a game, say nothing at all. Or stay home. You’re the parent, not the coach. Your job is to be supportive, encouraging, unconditionally loving. Your comments should be positive, not negative. Give your kid March - April 2012
credit for showing up, for working well with his teammates, for being a good sport. These qualities are much more important to your kid’s future well-being than the final score of any one game. HAVE FUN If you want your kids to relax and enjoy sports, you have to relax and enjoy watching. If you get upset and unruly, so will they. The quickest way to kill a kid’s interest in sports is to overemphasize winning. It’s only a game. The real victory is for your kid to feel comfortable and happy continuing to play. Kids who are made to feel unworthy on the ball field take that

insecurity into adulthood. It’s not pretty. PRAISE THE EFFORT IN SPITE OF THE OUTCOME If your kid’s team wins the game, great. That’s a no-brainer. But if your youngster is on the losing side, you need to offer empathy, not criticism. Recognize the loss, but don’t dwell on it. The teachable moment is all about resiliency. Develop that nothing-can-defeat-me spirit as a kid, and being an adult gets a whole lot easier. BE AVAILABLE Your behavior on game day is an important part of being a supportive parent, but
your attitude at home counts, too. Listen to your kids. Prompt them with questions about their experience on the field, the best and worst parts of their game. Practice with them, reinforcing the positive. If their interest in sports is waning, find out why before it’s too late. Be open to new sports -- Irish dancing, yoga, volleyball. Don’t pressure kids to stick with a sport that is your fav, just because you like being a fan. STAY ABOVE THE FRAY Sometimes fights erupt at a game, in the stands, on the field. Stay above the fray. Don’t abuse the refs or boo the 86

ou may think that the little red dress you saw in the store window would be perfect for you, but will the style of the dress flatter your own unique body shape?
You’ll save yourself time and frustration by following a few tips from California designer Kirstie Kelly. Here are Kelly’s tips on what to wear for any occasion: • Exaggerated A-line shapes in kneelength dresses are perfect for those of us with ample hips because the skirt flows right over our problem areas. • Ample figures will also benefit from flowing knee-length dresses in chiffon. Check out extra stylish details like cap sleeves and empire waistlines accented with a textured bodice for more flair. • The asymmetrical neckline is one of Kelly’s favorite ways to stand out. “This look is flattering on women with an inverted triangle figure and calls for delicate jewelry,” she says. • For more formal occasions, Kelly suggests accentuating an hourglass figure with a fitted dress that features a sweetheart neckline in long or short hemlines. • And yes, you can show a little skin. “There’s nothing wrong with a bit of decolletage,” she says, “but keep it tasteful by covering up somewhere else. a low-cut neckline with a semi-full skirt.” And if you prefer a more modest approach, Kelly likes the design of pleating details at the neckline of a dress with ruffles extending up over the collarbone. “This style of dress is great when you might not want to bare it all,” she says. “Then I would add the sparkle of a cuff bracelet.” • If you have a large chest, Kelly suggests redirecting the focus of the dress by wearing a style with chic chiffon sleeves. She also says slightly puffed sleeves and a ruched neckline are perfect for women with fuller hips. • A shirtdress is another way to dress up this spring. “This style works well for women who would like to mask their tummy because it isn’t overly clingy,” she says. “Just select a thin belt at your natural waistline to add structure and draw eyes upward.” • And for those who prefer pants, take what you have to the next level with a sophisticated, single-button jacket,” advises Kelly. “The jacket draws attention to the neckline and chest and falls just at the hips -- two important things for any figure. ∆

On your next shopping trip, keep an eye out for one of these trendy items to brighten and lighten up your wardrobe. Graphic Prints Whether it’s a new floral blouse, a striped skirt or a batik dress, the prints this spring are big, bright and bold. This is not a fashion trend for the wallflowers out there. Look for pieces that stand out, and don’t be afraid to mix and match them from head to toe. Saturated Colors Delicate pastels were all over the runways, but there were also plenty of deeper shades designers used for inspiration. And white seems to be one of the most popular neutrals, showing up in soft suits. Or take the best of it all and do a bold, colorblocked look. Pops of neon also shake up spring clothes. So take your pick, but the one to watch is “Tangerine Tango” as the color for spring. Mint green and lemon yellow are other hues to check out. “Tangerine Tango” cocktail dress by Rachel Roy. The super dress Start with a little black dress. There are LBDs in all shapes and sizes. It’s always in style, and it’s always appropriate for a wide variety of occasions. It’s also the perfect backdrop for statement piece jewelry. The super skirt Again, one the best pieces to make sure you include in your wardrobe is a black skirt. The pencil skirt is a great classic that will mix and match with that black jacket or go it alone with a dressy blouse or basic button-down. Keep the hemline right around the knee and have it tailored to flatter your legs. The super shirt There are lots of options out there. A classic white button-down is a good choice, or get a creamy white silk buttonfront that is more of a tunic length and is a good layering piece under black jackets and over jeans. The super shoe Yes, black pumps may go with everything in your closet, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. Look for a “super shoe” that will really give all those basics some new life. Visualize and expect better relationships You’ve heard of the Law of Attraction: like energy attracts like energy. If you spend time obsessing over the relationships in your life that aren’t going so well, you’ll end up attracting even more negative people and situations. On the flip side, if you think positive thoughts, you will attract positive things, people, and events into your life. That’s why it’s so important to be clear about your intentions. You need to decide what a healthy, comfortable relationship looks like for you and keep that picture in your mind.

Practice positivity The Law of Attraction isn’t just limited to what you visualize for the future; it also applies to how you’re behaving right now. Specifically, frequent complaints and negativity breed more of the same. Remember that every morning when you wake up, the ball is in your court in regards to how you want to spend your day. If you exude bitterness, anger, or self-pity, you may be bringing those around you down, too. Indeed, it’s possible that some of the people in your life are right and healthy for you, but that you are poisoning the relationship with constant negativity. “Make a conscious choice to surround those people with love,” Apollon advises. “By putting a smile on your face and greeting someone else with a cheerful, ‘Hi! “If you want to frolic in the sea and surf, you’re going to need a suit — and it might as well be one that flatters,” says Leah Feldon, fashion expert and author of Does This Make Me Look Fat? Here are some of Feldon’s tips on shopping for swimsuits, no matter what size you are: • Give yourself time to shop. “You have to try on a lot of suits,” says Feldon. “Try styles you might not ordinarily consider — sometimes they work better than you think. And of course, look for designs that will accentuate the positives. If you have a lovely bosom and heavy hips, make sure the bodice of the suit is perfectly well cut

and gorgeous and the bottom unobtrusive.” • Always try at least one size larger than you think you wear. “When suits are tight,” says Feldon, “the edges cut into any excess flesh and make bulges. Suits that fit a bit looser compress flesh less — hence nothing is squeezed, nothing pops out.” None of us wants that! • Look for high Lycra content. We all know this rule by now: the more Lycra in the suit, the more it will hold you in! • Check the inside construction. “Some suits have hidden features such as underwire bra support, bust enhancers, double linings, or tummy trimming panels that could serve you well,” says Feldon.

stressful experience whether puts you between grim overhead fluorescence. • Stick to the darker colors or tones close to your skin color. “Remember that dark colors recede, making the figure appear smaller, and skin-tone suits give the impression of an all-over monotone, always a winner.” • No big prints. The bigger the print, the bigger it makes us look. If you have to wear a big print, pair the big print top with a matching solid bottom to draw attention away from hips and thighs. • Cleverly placed vertical and diagonal stripes and/or color blocks can help slim. Try it on and then see what you and the mirror think. • No shiny fabrics. It seems it just shows
everything. • Shirring across the front of a suit can camouflage tummies, but make sure these are not your “Grandma” suits. • Go for the highest-cut leg that you feel comfortable in. “The high cut gives more length,” says Feldon, who suggests steering clear of the boy legs. “Every iota of excess flesh is squeezed down and pops out right where the suit leg ends. They are deadly! If you like the idea of bottoms that resemble shorts, make sure they are wide around the thigh.” Bottom line: Find the swimsuit that fits you. And better yet, find a cover-up that fits you better. ∆

or many of us feeling anxious and overwhelmed has become the new normal.
You know the second you step foot in your office you’ll be hit with 20+ tasks and an inbox full of e-mails begging for an immediate response. But you can get a handle on your to-do list and start working — and living — at your best. “Most of your dread doesn’t come from the work itself — it comes from how you think about the work,” says Womack, a workplace performance expert and author of the new book Your Best Just Got Better: Work Smarter, Think Bigger, Make More. “The psychological weight of unfinished tasks and unmade decisions is huge. There is a constant feeling of pressure to do more with less. You can’t change that reality… but you can make peace with it.” “The first step to changing the way you get things done is to accept that you’re never going to get it all done,” says Womack. “You’ll always be updating your to-do list by crossing off completed tasks and adding new ones…and that’s okay. When you improve the way you approach the things you need to get done, both on the job and off, you’ll stop wishing things were different and start really making new things possible.” Here are some essential good habits you can create for more productivity. psychological burden, in some cases that means reducing your literal burden. Start by deleting and recycling to make room for the “new.” Too many people let a backlog (paper AND digital information) pile up over the last six weeks of the year. Block out your time and prioritize Ask yourself this: How much time do I really spend each day clicking through e-mails and making my to-do list? The answer is probably a lot. When you spend your day making giant to-do lists or flagging “urgent” e-mails, you’ll never get any real work done. Instead look at your day and figure out where you have blocks of time to really focus and engage on what needs to be done. Change how you manage e-mail Rather than simply flag e-mails that require action, use the subject lines to catalog and organize them. For example, you might put “Follow-up Call” in the subject line of an e-mail about a meeting you just had with a client. Also, don’t look at your e-mail unless you have a block of time to devote to prioritizing them and responding to them. When you are going through your e-mail, use subject lines to catalog them and organize them so 52

bring character to our homes important to pick lamps that your heart for years to come. — they brighten up your space without a harsh flood of light. But in rooms where overhead lighting is a must, such as your dining room, install dimmer switches so you can soften the light.
The job of task lighting is to give you the proper amount of light to accomplish whatever job you need to get done, from paying the bills to reading that best seller you can’t put down. 51
Hi Class Living
When you need a pop of light to brighten a dark corner or give your room a warm glow, look to accent lights to save the day. In addition to positioning accent lights in prominent places, like on a buffet or side table, I also like to tuck them into unusual spots, like on the kitchen counter, in a bookcase or on the vanity in the powder room. I think the lamps we pick for our homes should do a lot more than bring light. They should also reflect our style and personality. When you go looking for lamps, think of it as a treasure hunt. Scout for a lamp that will blend with the style of your home and match the scale of your room. Don’t settle for anything that does not steal your heart. Why not try mixing it up a bit in your room? For instance, you could pair a chunky lamp made from a concrete urn or an old wooden finial with a lamp made from a fine porcelain vase. Part of the fun of picking a lamp is finding one that is perfect, right down to the
last detail. Carefully consider the shape of the lamp. Do you want one with straight lines or curves? Do you prefer a thinner lamp base or one that’s hefty? Which will work better for the space — a short or tall lamp? (If you fall in love with a lamp that’s a bit too short, you can elevate it with a riser, like a stack of books.) Pay close attention to the color of the lamp’s shade. If you want to use the lamp for task lighting, get one with a light color shade because it will give off more light. If you’re looking for mood lighting, you can’t beat a lamp with a black shade. Colored lamp shades, like red or gold, are also a great choice for accent lights because they add color to a room. Note the kind of fabric used to cover the shade. Different kinds of fabric provide different qualities of light and will dress up or dress down a lamp base. For instance, a linen lamp shade will give a more casual look than one made of silk. ∆
OVERCOME OVERLOAD — From Pg. 46 that you’ll easily be able to go back to less urgent e-mails later on. Break inertia Ever watch a freight train start to move? That first forward jolt takes the most energy; keeping the train rolling is much easier. Do some small things to get rolling. Once you get started with something small and manageable, you will realize that it isn’t so tough after all. Always be prepared for “bonus time” This is a great strategy for increasing productivity throughout the year, but it will be especially helpful in the days following a vacation (or any break). Bring small chunks of work with you wherever you go. Then, while waiting for a meeting to start or for a delayed flight to depart you’ll be able to reply to an e-mail or make a phone call. In other instances, you might have enough time to review materials for another meeting or project you are workMarch - April 2012

Reduce meeting time lengths If meetings at your organization are normally given a 60-minute time length, start giving them a 45-minute time length. You’ll find that what you get done in 60 minutes you can also achieve in 45 minutes. You’ll also gain 15 extra minutes for each meeting you have. Figure out what distracts you It can be extremely helpful to discern exactly what it is that gets in the way of your focus. Identify what is blocking your ability to give all of your attention to what needs your attention. Is it the constant ding of e-mails popping up in your inbox? Is it employees or colleagues who need “just a minute” of your time? Once you have this inventory, you can begin to make subtle changes so that you wind up getting 68

Perfect Chair By Mary Carol Garrity

n order to pick the right chair, you have to determine what role it will play in your home and in your life. Where will the chair be located, and how will it be used? For instance, will this chair be a statement piece in your formal living room or will it be in your casual family room, hosting popcorn-eating TV watchers? If the chair is mostly to be looked at, then your selection should be style-driven, but if it’s in a family room, you want comfort and function. Who will be sitting in it on a regular basis? Rarely do I find a chair that fits both a man, woman and child perfectly, so my advice is to choose the person who gets dibs on the chair and select one that fits him or her just right. Another key factor is paying attention to scale. It’s essential for your new chair to be proportionate to the other furnishings in the room. We love to mix styles, but the scale of all the pieces has to match or the room just won’t work. Don’t settle for anything less than a highquality piece. Poorly made furnishings may look great on the showroom floor, flashing their seductively low price tags, but after going 10 rounds with your family, pets and guests, their beauty will quickly
fade and you’ll be left with a “bargain” that creeks and sags, is split and warped. When you invest in a high-quality piece, your chair will look brand-new for years. The chances of finding the chair of your dreams dramatically increase if you know exactly what features you want. Here are a few questions to consider that will help you focus your search: • What type of cushions do you want? Seat cushions are a lot like mattresses — some people like them firm and others want them sink-into soft. • Do you want a chair with a tight back or cushion back? • How high do you want the back of the chair to reach? High enough to rest your head against — or low enough to see over? • How wide and deep should the seat be? Some people like wider chairs so they can tuck their legs under them. • How high do you want the arms to be? A lot of folks love English-club chairs with arms perfectly positioned to allow you to read the newspaper. • Skirt or exposed legs? Unless you’re just crazy about skirts, I recommend getting a chair without one because fab- 73

The Bidet Toilet Seat For those of you who don’t know what a bidet is, just think of it as a sit-down wash sink for your bottom. In Europe, a bidet is commonplace. It’s usually a separate fixture next to the toilet with its own water and drain lines. A form of the traditional bidet is becoming popular in America, thanks to new technology. It’s called a bidet toilet seat and basically it can turn your existing toilet into a functioning bidet. This saves a lot of space and drastically cuts down on installation costs compared to installing a separate plumbing fixture. For selections, contact a plumbing supply house and get information on the “toilet seats with bidet functionality.” These seats use automatically extending water wands that give a soft aerated private spray wash. This leads us to your next question. As far as

water use, bidets have long been considered a water-saving fixture, because they allow the user an option of partial bathing instead of a total body shower. You have the option of controlling water temperature, because the quality bidet toilet seats on the market today have inline water heaters. Some bidet seats even have seat warmers, flow settings, warm-air drying, and even odor control. Put that in a nice package with a “remote control” option and you may never want to leave your bathroom. Remember, you’ll need to work with a licensed contractor, because bidet seats do require electrical and plumbing work, plus any permits needed. bathroom? Here are some ideas. Vessel sinks are reminiscent of washbasins and pitchers of water that sat on vanity countertops. They look like large bowls with finished inside and outside walls. Vessel sinks changed shape and were mounted inside our vanities and countertops. They are now the preferred highend choice for many bathrooms. They are made of are three popular materials. Vitreous china. China is basically fired clay coated with a bright glaze. It’s probably the most versatile material used for vessel sinks. The color, style and decorative aspects of a china vessel sink can match up with just about any bathroom layout and design. Thick-glass. Of course, glass will be translucent in appearance, creating a deep, rich look, and can also offer a wide variety of color choices. Stone. Sinks cut from an actual block
of marble, creating a totally natural style of vessel sink. Keep in mind that matching countertops, faucets and extra labor are needed to install this type of sink. The Cast Iron Tub In recent years cast-iron plumbing fixtures have received lots of attention. One big reason is that cast-iron fixtures are made with more than 90 percent recycled materials, and most green building contractors love using reclaimed materials. The striking new colors available for cast iron provide another reason. Some of these finishes are so deep that they almost appear to be three-dimensional. New colors like black and tan and sea salt seem to float above the surface. Also, modern features have been added to today’s cast-iron tubs, like bubble-massage therapy. 83

The Value Plants
By Maureen Gilmer
You rarely see edible flowers for sale in the produce department or farmers markets because edible flower petals wither in a matter of hours. The only way to make them part of your culinary world is to grow your own. The luxury to pick and use immediately opens the door to all kinds of colorful dishes. For the first-timer, know that not all flowers are edible and some can be downright poisonous. In general, consider the petals the most palatable part. It’s traditional to remove stigmas and stamens, as well as the stem and calix. Consider the viola clan the most versatile of all edible flowers, owing to the ease of cultivation and enormous range of color. They grow anywhere where there is plenty of sun and reasonably well-drained soil. The genus viola includes the small annual forms known as Johnnyjump-ups, which are close in appearance to their parents, the wildflowers of Europe. These sprawling, airy plants often sow in gardens, producing loads of dime-sized flowers. These little fellows blend easily into mixed beds and borders. They can also spill off the edges of pots or down small banks. Today’s standard violas are among the best flower producers and remain incredibly popular for container growth, owing to their tidiness.

What’s Love Got
T
here are definite correlations among the brain, body and even the bedroom.
The Society for Personality and Social Psychology reported recently that love can play a critical role in the health of long-term relationships and of the couples themselves.” Dr. Lisa Diamond from the University of Utah conducted research of couples in romantic relationships and found that their levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, increased during separation and had negative effects on positive interactions and sleep, among other things. Diamond concluded, “The findings can contribute to our emerging understanding of the processes through which longstanding romantic ties are beneficial for our health.” ABC News reported on a study conducted by the State University of New York at Oswego that found that blood pressure lowered when people were with their spouses or partners. This was true whether they were happy or not in their relationships. In short, “familiarity breeds lower systolic numbers.” Sarah Mahoney from Prevention magazine further explained: “A study from the University of Pittsburgh found that women in good marriages have a much lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those March - April 2012
in high-stress relationships. The National Longitudinal Mortality Study, which has been tracking more than a million subjects since 1979, shows that married people live longer, have fewer heart attacks and lower cancer rates, and even get pneumonia less frequently than singles. And a new study from the University of Iowa found that ovarian cancer patients with a strong sense of connection to others and satisfying relationships had more vigorous ‘natural killer’ cell activity at the site of the tumor than those who didn’t have those social

ties. (These desirable white blood cells kill cancerous cells as part of the body’s immune system.)” That is likely why the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies surmised that close relationships generally add years to one’s life. MedicineNet is a great website for a variety of health and fitness education, including information on love and sex. Here are a few keys that clearly show the interrelation among brain, body and bedroom: • Oxytocin, the so-called “hormone of love and comfort,” is plentiful in couples when they are intimate. When oxytocin flows, endorphins increase and pain decreases. That is why some individuals find headaches, arthritis pain or PMS symptoms dissipate after sex. MSN Health reported, “Doctors at the University of North Carolina have found that hugging may dramatically lower blood pressure and boost blood levels of oxytocin.” • Studies also show that having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immu

noglobulin A, or IgA, which can protect you from infections and getting colds, according to scientists at Wilkes University. MSM Health added, “A 2002 study from the University of Bristol in England found that men who had sex two or more times a week cut their risk of having a fatal heart attack in half.” • For women, one of the most common causes of arousal dysfunction is day-to-day discord with their partners. The old adage that “sex starts in the kitchen” is as true today as it ever has been. Similarly, for men who are overachievers or workaholics, human experience and studies both show that where our mind is, our libido follows. A host of bedroom inhibitors and stimulators start or end in the mind, revealing that in both genders, the brain is still the largest and most powerful sexual organ. • Dopamine is another feel-good brain chemical that often is associated with the early stages of a romance or feelings of infatuation and being in love. Dopamine surges usher in feelings of contentment and euphoria. However, dopamine levels

in relationships last anywhere from six to 18 months (maybe longer), which may correspond with people’s feelings of “falling out of love.” Though love is definitely more than a feeling, I believe dopamine is God’s way of getting our relationships off the launchpad. We are then responsible for implementing daily acts of love (if you will, speaking our mates’ love languages) that grow and drive our relationships. • Endorphins, the brain’s natural pain and stress fighters, sometimes called the E narcotic, are another type of neurotransmitter, bringing pain relief, sedation or major sensations of well-being. MedicineNet notes, “Endorphins interact with the opiate receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain and act similarly to drugs such as morphine and codeine.” Many things can trigger endorphins, including pain, stress, exercise, massage and meditation. Sex is a potent trigger for the release of OVERCOME — From Pg. 52 more done, in less time, at a higher level of quality. Divide your projects into small, manageable pieces Take one step at a time and don’t worry about reaching the ultimate goal. A great way to approach this is to break the yearly goals down into quarterly goals. There are X number of weeks left in the first quarter. If you worked on a goal only two hours each week (perhaps over four 30-minute sessions) you’ll have a total of X hours to invest in that goal. Set milestones, decide actions, and make progress faster. Identify the VERBS that need attention (And here’s a hint: Smaller is better.) Organize your to-do list by verbs in order to manage your productivity in terms of action, delegation, and progress. Actions such Call, Draft, Review, and Invite are things that you can do, generally in one sitting, that have the potential to move the project forward one step at a time. March - April 2012
endorphins. And they are also likely associated with driving a relationship deeper in love, beyond the dopamine and other early chemical stages. Mahoney concludes, “The benefits of love are explicit and measurable. ... Some experts think it won’t be long before doctors prescribe steamy sex, romantic getaways, and caring communication in addition to low-cholesterol diets and plenty of rest.” In short, as Dr. Jon Maner of Florida State University summarized, “love binds romantic partners together for the long term and is associated with a wealth of positive relationship processes.” But love also can exacerbate pain, he added. “The more love one feels for one’s partner the more one has to lose if the relationship ends. It’s all about protecting one’s relationship.” What’s love got to do with it? Everything! ∆ Learn to delegate clearly Come to terms with the fact that you can’t get it all done yourself. Identify exactly what needs to be done and by when. Over-communicate and track what you have given to whom. Follow up with people who you think may wind up falling behind. Be relentless. After all, if the people you delegate to aren’t productive, you won’t be productive either. Hold yourself accountable with end-of-day notecards At the end of each day write down (on a 3x5 notecard) basic things about each day: Who you met with. What you completed. Where you went. What you learned. At the end of the month, you can use this “inventory of engagement” to identify what you want/ need to do more (or less!) of. Implement a weekly debrief Take time after every five-day period to stop, look around, and assess where you are in relation to where you thought you

would be. Look at three key areas: What new ideas have emerged? What decisions need to be made? How do I track this information? Forecast your future Open your calendar to 180 days from today. There, write three to four paragraphs describing what you’ll have done, where you’ll have been, and what will have
happened to your personal/professional life by then. This kind of “forecasting” is good to do from time to time, and by spending ten or so minutes thinking about the next six months, you’ll put your goals into action. There is no reason to remain mired in frustration and struggling to catch up. Life can be a wonderful journey, and it can start whenever you want it to start. ∆

an important part of your health. than you might think.
People who sleep eight or more hours per night will live longer and have a lower risk of death than those who tend to sleep less. Research even shows that sleep is an important part of weight loss. People who sleep eight hours a night are more likely to lose weight when dieting than those who sleep six hours or less. Moreover, the well-rested individuals lose much more fat and less muscle. Sleep has many restorative effects on the body. It leads to complete healing of muscle that is subtly damaged during the wear and tear process of an active day. Critical for normal metabolism, sleep also conserves energy and benefits the ability to retain what was learned the previous day. Healthy sleep is an essential element of the circadian rhythm, in which the levels of many hormones fluctuate to help the body to be awake during the day and asleep at night. Once asleep, quality is as important as quantity. Normal sleep is divided into non-rapid eye movement and rapid eye movement sleep. As sleep begins, NREM becomes progressively deeper and arousal becomes more difficult. This is referred to as N3 sleep type and predominates during the first third of the night. Adequate REM sleep accounts for about 20 percent to 25 percent of total sleep, the majority of which occurs in the last third of the night.

Don’t be afraid to introduce bold fabrics with large prints and startling colors. How about a black-and-white damask table topper paired with apple-green napkins? Or an Ikat-patterned tablecloth with a bold solid napkin? For an extra special touch, have the napkins monogrammed. Change a Chair Have a side chair that’s looking kind of shabby? Transform its look by making a slipcover for just the seat cushion. Or change the appearance of dining-room chairs by either redoing the upholstery seat cushions or creating skirted slipcovers to rest over the existing seat. My dining-room chairs are covered in black leather, but you’d never know it because I dress them up with fabric slipcovers. Right now, they are covered in a blue-and-white print that pulls out the blue in my dining-room walls. ∆ Picking the perfect — From Pg. 55 ric skirts get dirty very easily. For variety, I like to fill my rooms with chairs that have a wide assortment of leg styles and finishes. Say goodbye to your inhibitions and take the chair you’re considering for a test drive. How do you sit at home? Assume the same position at the furniture store. Throw your legs over the arm, tuck them under you or snuggle into your favorite nap position. If you don’t feel comfortable, the chair is probably not the one for you. ∆

Fit Your Body To Your Bike By Marilynn Preston

hether you’re commuting to work or communing with nature, riding a bicycle is a wonderful way to go. These days we’re seeing more folding bikes, recumbent bikes, hybrid bikes and many more bike riders, which is all very good news for a nation of fatties starving for exercise. Bikes don’t run on $4-dollars-a-gallon fuel. Bikes burn calories. Bikes are fun, energizing and a terrific way to adventure out with family or friends. Next time you’re feeling blue, or anxious, jump on your bike for a 30-minute spin, and watch what happens to your mood when your mind and your body and your breath all get in gear. Bikes never leave you drowsy, and the only side effect is a calmer brain March - April 2012
and stronger legs. ARE YOU READY TO ROLL? Safety first. Start with the tires. Does the rubber look good? Is the tread intact? Check your spare, too. And your pump. You do carry a pump, don’t you? Is it working? Working brakes are also a must, so check before you wreck. If yours are low or sticky, have them fixed or replaced. CHECK YOUR WHEELS AND CHAIN Clean your hubs and spokes from time to time, and as you wipe away the dirt, make sure your spokes are secure at both

the rim (the top) and the hub (the middle). If any spokes seem loose, take your bike to a professional to have the spokes trued, or tightened. If you have a spoke wrench and a willingness to try, you can flip your bike upside down, spin the wheel to see if it’s off kilter and learn the art of wheel truing yourself. Me? I take it to my local bike shop pro. Cleaning your chain is a snap. To remove the dirt and grime, spray allpurpose cleaner on the chain, and gently wipe it off with a rag. Then spray it again, lightly, with some solvent so the chain is left clean, but slightly oiled.
ADJUST YOUR BODY TO YOUR BIKE This is crucial. Please pay attention. If your body doesn’t fit your bike, you are an injury waiting to happen. Sore butt? Cranky knees? Screaming lower back? These can all happen if you don’t take a few minutes to make sure you and your bike are a good fit. To set your bike up correctly: • YOUR SEAT: Raise or lower your seat post so that, at the bottom of your downstroke, your knee is slightly bent. I can’t tell you how often I see people riding with the seat too low. I can almost feel them grinding out their knees. It’s 83 75

the outdoor sculptures, including the original 2010 Winter Olympics Cauldron. Continue your walk along the promenade on the water’s edge, passing by parks, cafés, and restaurants. A good way to explore the city is by using the hop-on hop-off buses and trolleys that loop around the city’s neighborhoods and attractions. Stanley Park is a 1,000 acre nature reserve surrounded by a 13.7 - mile seawall and oceanside road, ideal for biking, jogging and scenic walks. If you want a more leisurely experience take a horsedrawn wagon and enjoy the park the old fashioned way. Granville Island is home to bustling farmer markets, specialty shops, artist studios and artisan workshops. Walk along the cobblestone streets, shop the eclectic boutiques, and dine in one of the waterfront restaurants. Roam the streets of romantic Gastown, the oldest part of the city, a vibrant neighborhood where visitors and locals enjoy fashionable boutiques, trendy galleries, bars and restaurants. Browse the shops for native artwork, souvenirs, and designer fashions. In Chinatown, visit Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, a walled oasis of harmony and serenity. Explore the authentic halls and pavilions, enjoy the Ming Dynasty garden, and take in the sculpted rock formations and exquisite landscaping. Join a complimentary tour for a glimpse into the architecture and lifestyle of 14th Century Imperial China. and zip-lining, explore the numerous hiking trails, enjoy bird shows, a lumberjack show, and educational movies. Stop at the wildlife refuge and try to spot the two resident grizzly bears. Vancouver’s restaurant scene is like the city — hip, young and trendy. Try Chambar, a Belgian style restaurant with Moroccan influences. Order the popular pot of plump moule frittes (mussels with homemade fries) or try the peppercorn-crusted bison served with caramelized baby potatoes and smoked tomato sauce. (www.chambar.com) Dine at C restaurant, on the shores of False Creek by Granville Bridge, and enjoy fresh fish, meat, and vegetables from local sources. Order the roasted halibut served with pancetta gnocchi, mushrooms and a port gastrique sauce, or the seared BC albacore tuna, with salsa verde, crisp anchovies, and eggplant caviar. As you savor your meal, take in the maritime hustle and bustle of aqua buses and ferry boats that ply the calm waters of the bay. (www.crestaurant.com) The city is home to a large number of hotels located downtown and on the waterfront. Stay at the elegant Wedgewood Hotel and Spa, an intimate Relais & Chateaux property located next to the Art Gallery and Robson St., an avenue lined with designer stores and independent boutiques. The opulent lobby is appointed with posh chaises, crystal chandeliers, works of art, and fresh orchids. The rooms, ranging from sprawling penthouse suites to oversized guest rooms, are stylishly decorated with period furniture and accessories. Some rooms feature a large in-suite double tub whirlpool. (www.coasthotels.com) For dinner, try the contemporary fare at Preston, the hotel’s trendy restaurant. Order the halibut with potato gnocchi, or gioza of shrimp and scallops. A top area attraction, only a couple of hours from downtown Vancouver, is Whistler, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics. You can reach it by car or by joining a narrated day tour offered by West Coast Sightseeing. (www.vancouversightseeing.com). The scenic road to Whistler, named the Sea to Sky Highway, follows the undulating coastline, offering breathtaking views of the rugged snowstreaked mountains. The highlight of Whistler is a 2.7 mile “top of the world” ride on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, an engineering marvel that takes visitors on a scenic alpine journey between the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Another popular side trip from Vancouver is a visit to Victoria, a quaint town on the tip of Vancouver Island, accessible via an hour and a half car ferry. One of the main reasons to travel to Victoria is to visit the famous Butchart Gardens, an enclave of 55 flowering acres attracting millions of tourists from all over the world. (www.butchartgardens. com). The manicured grounds feature different landscapes and plantings including Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean and rose gardens. Undulating pathways, lined with colorful, seasonal flowers, connect the different areas. The gardens are particularly attractive at dusk as nocturnal fragrances fill the cool air and the special lighting casts a magic spell on the enchanted landscapes. During summer, the gardens feature nightly open-air concerts and a popular fireworks display on Saturdays. For dinner, experience the garden’s elegant restaurant and enjoy the artfully presented signature dishes. Order the rack of lamb served with feta polenta cake, summer squash, and a black olive tapenade, or the West Coast shellfish potage. Victoria is a picturesque English style town laden with colorful flower baskets that adorn every street-pole. Drive along Wharf Road on the waterfront and stop by the city’s top attractions. The BC Museum showcases dioramas of flora and fauna in British Colombia, including an iconic Ice Age mammoth. On the top floor, an educational exhibit highlights the life of Canada’s First Nations (indigenous people) before and after contact with the European settlers.
