piritual healing means learning how to focus on what makes you feel good or better. It’s all about choices — choosing to release the old “stuff” that attracts undesirable energetic consequences and to replace it with positive thoughts, images, and activities.

“You’ll create an internal positive energetic shift that leaves you feeling lighter, more peaceful, and more content,” says intuitive psychologist Susan Apollon, author of Touched by the Extraordinary, Book Two: Healing Stories of Love, Loss & Hope. Here are Apollon’s tips on how to find inner peace and let the sun shine in: Create Harmony and Balance through Breath Meditation Choose to start each day by practicing the breath meditation technique for 15 minutes: Visualize your breath coming in from God or the Universe, merging with you (your body, thoughts, feelings), and filling you with healing energy. On your out breath, visualize your breath gently nudging out all your negative or painful thoughts or images. Do this for a few minutes while waiting for an appointment, in the car, in your office, or in school. Feel your breath shifting you energetically, leaving you feeling greater warmth, relaxation, and peace. Become Conscious of Your Power through Journaling Choose to journal for 15 minutes a day about situations, times, and incidents when you could feel and/or were

17

aware at some level of your power and how great it felt. Then note your fears, insecurities, their roots, whether they make sense or are completely irrational, and how they have stolen your power. Finally, write of ways in which you can begin to reclaim your power (via actions, self-dialogue, affirmations, breath, meditation, taking courses, getting counseling assistance, etc.).

and so forth—helps us co-create that outcome. “When you create a mental image of, for example, angels holding up the airplane that your son is traveling on, it helps you feel a sense of confidence instead of a sense of worry and fear,” explains Apollon. “Obviously, you feel better. And when you feel better, you vibrate at a higher level, which attracts good things to you.”

Affirm Your Power throughout the Day Write affirmations and both visualize and feel the power within you as you daily make these high-vibrational statements to your cells: I Am worthy, I Am wise, I Am beautiful, I Am intelligent, I Am compassionate, I Am loving, I Am forgiving, I Am strong, I Am lovable, As I breathe in, I Am a part of God, I Am always protected and watched over, I Am that I Am. I Am, I Am, I Am! Write them on sticky notes and place them all around to remind you of your power, with I Am … everywhere.

Perform an Act of Compassion, Caring, Kindness, and Service Daily Choose to Make a Difference. Choose any activity in which you do something for another person or group of people with authentic feelings of compassion and love. This needs to be more than signing a check. Do a physical deed that impacts on the quality of life of another person or being, whether it’s bringing dinner to one who is shut in or helping the elderly, blind, or others in need of assistance.

Choose Forgiveness Choose to consciously detach from and surrender to the Universe any attachments to old hurts, resentments, betrayals, and so on. Bring to mind the person or issue that creates pain for you, then Face it, Embrace it, Breathe it out, and Choose to say I forgive you or I surrender you to God, Source, or the Universe, because I choose to move on with my life. Remember to forgive another for you and not for him or her. “Visualize a cord between you and the person with whom you have issues and see yourself cutting the cord,” suggests Apollon. “Feel the relief. Visualize your power returning to you.” Practice the Art of Visualization Envisioning what you want is a tremendously powerful technique. Because we think visually, picturing what we want in our mind’s eye—good health, Divine protection for ourselves or our children, May - June 2011

Choose to Be Inspired Choose to read or listen to materials that inform, soothe, entertain, and connect you with your own soul. Apollon’s own book, Touched by the Extraordinary: An Intuitive Psychologist Shares Insights, Lessons, and True Stories of Spirit and Love to Transform and Heal the Soul, is one such work. It’s available with a set of CDs on which Apollon reads the book in its entirety. Others she recommends include: Conversations with God, The Secret, Many Masters, Many Minds, Messages from Water, works by Deepak Chopra or the Dalai Lama, and similar books and CDs. “It’s amazing how reading and listening to inspirational works can keep you on track with your spiritual practice,” reflects Apollon. “It’s good maintenance and it can yield all sorts of insights you’d never gain otherwise.”

or years, online dating seemed to carry a stigma around with it. Couples who met online told edited versions of their “how we met” story, and girlfriends kept their dating profiles secret. But now, as people are spending more time on line, looking for a mate in the cyberspace has become the norm.

“When it comes to dating, the Internet has broadened and widened the playing field and deepened the pool,” says Dr. Joy Browne, author of Dating For Dummies®, 3rd Edition. “Literally thousands of folks are out there just waiting to click or be clicked on — you just have to know how and where to connect — and understand the ‘rules’ before you venture online.” So how do you enjoy and profit from this brave new world? Dr. Browne says that there are eleven simple dos and don’ts that will help you to maximize your online experience and have you on the way to finding your perfect match. Be precise When writing an Internet personal ad or filling out an online dating questionnaire, it’s useful to pretend that you have to pay by the word, whether you actually have to pay for it or not. In the bad old days, personal ads were charged by the word. These days most profiles are unlimited in terms of words once you’ve May - June 2011

about who you are. If you’re a little heavy, then say, “I’m a little heavy. I can live with it. Can you?” This is a much better approach than lying about your weight. Remember: Sooner or later the intent is to meet face to face, and neither of you should be unpleasantly surprised. • As for sexual history, don’t go there! Your indiscretions are best forgotten or dealt with in the confessional or therapy, but certainly not on a website with strangers. Provide only a cell phone number When you are connecting online, it’s best to keep in mind that any person who found you on the Web is a stranger. So don’t give your home phone number, which Browne warns that someone could use to track to your address. “Practice safety first by giving out only your cell phone number, which also offers the protection of caller ID, an off switch, and mobility,” explaines Browne. “A cell phone allows you to be anywhere without anyone knowing where you are. In the worst-case scenario of a lunatic or a stalker, you can always get rid of the phone if you need to.” Date within a 25-mile radius You may be one of those people who look for potential dates on vacations or planes, or with someone who is traveling through town. But Browne warns that you should be weary. Long-distance relationships are initially thrilling but soon become poisonous because they’re often more fantasy than reality. Have people met other people on bike trips through Provence? Yes, but leave that happenstance to happenstance. When you’re investing in the specific intent to find somebody, be reasonable and sensible and play the odds. “Find somebody who is in your zip code if possible, your area code preferably, and your time zone certainly, so that you can actually get to know each other and develop an emotional and physical intimacy. Dealing with someone who is May - June 2011

GU (geographically undesirable) is an avoidable hassle.” Meet publicly and make sure someone knows where you are Remember that the person you meet online is a stranger. “Meet in a public place and make sure that somebody you know and trust is aware of your whereabouts. Practice a modicum of sensible behavior. In real life, you wouldn’t go off with strangers, and this is indeed still real life — with the computer as intermediary,” says Browne. Don’t stay online too long before a meeting Studies show that looking at a computer screen gives you a false sense of intimacy with a resulting loss of inhibitions. When you’re dealing with strangers, as you are in online dating, inhibitions serve as a valuable and healthy function. So if you lose your inhibitions without knowing to whom you’re making yourself vulnerable, you put yourself in a careless and dangerous situation. “A week or two of fantasy fun is sufficient, and then it’s time to bite the bullet and actually meet face to face, with a brief pit stop at phone calls so you can at least be assured of gender and voice recognition. If you spend any more time in fantasyland, you’re creating an artificial sense of intimacy, which is very difficult to overcome. Remember that you want dating, not danger, as the eventual outcome,” she says. Never online date on an office computer If you don’t have a computer at home, invest in a cheap laptop, a used computer, or a smart phone, but don’t date online at the office, warns Browne. Keep your personal life and your office life separate. You may think that you’ve covered your tracks or that online dating after hours doesn’t count, but the headlines and dockets are full of folks who believed that email and computers are secure. 36

Financial Advice For New Grads By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

M

ost young adults have received no instruction about personal finance at the moment they need it most: when entering the work force and starting “real life.” Here are a few basics, both “big picture” ideas and some very practical ones.

Live within your means This is a big one and everyone should follow it. Budget your money and pursue a lifestyle you can afford. This will keep you of debt, help build wealth for the future, and — just as important — reduce anxieties about money. Plan for retirement This may seem ludicrous to someone in the early 20s, but if possible, now is the ideal time to start building wealth for retirement. If you start putting away 10 percent of your income for this big goal now, you’ll probably never have to increase that percentage. If you’re at a job with a 401(k) and a company match, take full advantage of the match. Otherwise, a Roth IRA is a smart move. Plan for the unexpected Start creating an emergency fund that would cover your basic living expenses for three to six months in case you enter a prolonged period of unemployment. Even May - June 2011

if your parents can be a safety net, you’ll relish the sense of independence that a nest egg can offer. Have health insurance! Mandatory, even for the healthiest 20-something. A bad accident or an unforeseen illness can be ruinously expensive. If you can get health insurance through work, perfect. If not, stay on your parents’ policy as a dependent (provided you’re single and under 26), thanks to the health care bill signed into law in March. Check with your insurance company or human resources department for details (the bill takes effect on Sept. 23, 2010). Shop around and find a policy. If you’re healthy, a high deductible policy should be inexpensive. Start a banking relationship Most of today’s college kids have checking accounts with ATM/debit cards attached, so they are familiar with how these work. If you need need a new account, look for a no-fee or very low-fee account (some

of the online banks offer debit/ATM cards and charge no fees). And understand the rules about overdrafts, particularly the fees associated with them. Also get a credit card and begin building your credit history. Again, a no-fee, low-interest card is best but do not to carry a balance unless absolutely necessary. Understand the dangers of compound interest and make sure to read the fine print to see interest rates and penalties for late or missed payments. There are new rules about credit card disclosures designed to inform and protect consumers — and you can read about them at the Federal Reserve’s website (www.federalreserve.gov/ consumerinfo/wyntk_creditcardrules. htm).

very low-paying field, you might be eligible for a new program that lowers monthly payments. (Check out http://studentaid. ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/ english/IBRPlan.jsp for more details.)

Start repaying student loans If you took out student loans, find out the mechanism for repayment and when repayment should begin. Like credit card debt, you don’t want to become delinquent on a payment. By the way, if you’re going into a

learn about the financial markets If you are starting to save part of your paycheck, you should become acquainted with the basics of investing. For example, the instruments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds and exchange traded funds), the concept of risk versus reward, and the importance of diversification and asset allocation. well as choose to save for your retirement (or not) — but you will have to live with the consequences. Most college grads (and even younger kids) are interested in personal finance — knowing about money and how to use it is part of being an adult, and they’re eager to be independent. The ‘It’ Fashion List By Sharon Mosley

I

f you’ve been waiting to buy some easy and breezy fashions, here are this season’s top trends:

Wide leg pants With skinny jeans and leggings ruling the top 10 trend list for the past few seasons, it’s no wonder that the newest pants are headed in a totally different direction. Think ‘70s and going with the flow ... high waists and all. The suit Menswear is back in a big way. And once again, matching pantsuits and skirt suits are chic and sleek. This is an easy way to dress girls, snap them up! The sport jacket A little slouchy and oversized, like your boyfriend’s casual favorite, this new jacket tops off preppy basics — chinos and V-neck sweaters — or more dressy options, such as short skirts and sheer tops. Long skirts From maxis that sweep the floor to calflength hemlines, skirts are going longer and longer. Remember to choose soft fabrics and top them off with crocheted sweaters or fitted tunic tops.

bit garden party and a little bit Studio 54, this is one-step and no-fuss dressing at its best. Sheer anything Don’t worry, you can always cover up a little bit, but sheer tops, skirts and dresses are perfect for summer. Whether it’s a lacy shift or an organza skirt or a long and flowing transparent maxi dress, layer on other pieces in the “appropriate” places and have some fun with this diaphanous trend. Billowy blouses Part of the “pajama” trend — clothes that are loose and easy — these blouses often have ruffles or drape in gentle folds over satiny pants. It’s a great spring look when teamed with jeans. The A-line coat Think ladylike and ‘60s, but forget the pillbox hat. This boxy, little structured coat is one of the season’s most interesting ways to cover up on those still-chilly days. Buy one in a bright color (how about a citrusy coral?) and pop it over everything.

The novelty printed dress Florals are making a big splash this season in longer versions — with the printed dress showing up mostly in below-theknee lengths. A little bit bohemian, a little May - June 2011

Intense color Forget soft pastels for now. Instead, choose one new piece or a new pair of shoes or a handbag in a bright neon or electric color. One color-saturated jacket or skirt will usually give you this season’s color fix, but many designers kick it up a notch and combine many colorful elements in the same outfit.

Don’t be afraid to be daring! Head-to-toe white If bright colors are TOO intense for you, then how about going for a whiteout? From white handbags to white sandals to white cropped jeans and even white pantsuits, this crisp palette is coming on strong as an alternative to all black. ∆

ccessories are the extras that give our wardrobes personality each season, so what’s “old” is new again! They instantly transform that pair of jeans and T-shirt from last year. They dress up the suit that we wear to work every week and make our favorite little black dress come alive. Here are a few of the “it” accessories to put on your shopping list this season: A floppy hat Paying homage to the ‘70s, designers go for the dramatic, which means big hats with oversized brims -- perfectly chic and perfect for keeping skin protected from the sun at the beach or on city streets. In The Swim By Sharon Mosley

ove it or hate it. Swimsuit season is almost here. You can cover it all up or figure out a way to accentuate the positive and have a great time.

Let’s face it, we all have figure flaws, so let’s figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to baring it all ... well, almost! “The first decision is whether to wear a one-piece or two-piece suit,” says Jill Martin, fashion expert and author of “Fashion for Dummies.” “What you choose depends on what you’re comfortable in and what body part you want to show off or hide,” she says. “Get a one-piece suit if your belly

is an area that you don’t feel comfortable revealing.” Here are some of Martin’s tips for choosing a swimsuit that fits your body style: Small-busted The bandeau top or triangle top looks great on you (and many suits now come with padding if you want an extra boost!). Also, a cute suit with ruffles on top helps accentuate the chest area. Any detail on top helps give the illusion that you’re more curvaceous. These tops are available in either a one-piece or two-piece style, so you can choose which look you prefer. Large-busted If you have larger breasts and want to wear a two-piece suit, try ones that have more supportive straps. The bra-style bikini top is a very good choice for you as is the halter-top suit. These both flatter and support you in the chest area. If you prefer to wear a one-piece suit, look for one with straps that provide the support you’re looking for. Three tiers of ruffles add volume to the bust.

The low-rising candystriped placket creates playful drama, while the wide waistband keeps everything under wraps.

Bottom-heavy Play up your top in order to even out the proportions. Choose either a one or two-piece suit with a top half that attracts all the attention. Separates — where the top has thicker straps or a colorful print and the bottom half is a dark solid that flatters — are always a good choice. Or try a color block one-piece with lighter colors on the top and darker ones on the bottom. Avoid boy short bottoms, which emphasize and attract attention to your derriere. Accentuating your cleavage is a good way to divert attention from other areas. Short legs Choose a suit that’s cut high at the hip to make your legs look longer. A plunging neckline also creates a more vertical look. Vertical stripes serve the same purpose. Long torso Go for horizontal stripes. A two-piece suit breaks up your midsection. If you wear a one-piece, try one with cutouts, which break up your torso. And don’t be afraid to add splashes of color to keep eyes from looking at you in a straight up-and-down manner. Thick waist If your hips and waist are about the same size, wear a two-piece suit with bright colors, so there’s a clear definition between your two halves. Choose bottoms that sit low on your hips (these add a lengthening effect), and try to find a suit that has some bows or other adornment at the hips to differentiate your hips and waist.

Plus-sized Dark colors are the best. A streamlined one-piece in a dark color makes you look longer and leaner. Try an interesting neckline, maybe one that’s deeper rather than rounder, as it creates more of an illusion of length and draws attention to your chest area. Cover-ups Hey, we all need them at times. Martin suggests buying one of the most versatile cover-ups: a sarong. “The great thing about a sarong is that you can use it in several ways, depending on which parts you want to cover,” she says. “Tie it above your chest, like a bath towel, and it covers you entirely without being too hot or looking out-of-place. If you just want to cover your lower half, tie it at your waist. Sarongs are so easy to put on and take off. You can even use it to lie on at the beach when you take it off!” ∆

s gorgeous and inviting as a garden is during the day, it becomes a magical place at night if it’s properly lighted.

Garden lighting can illuminate a patio for entertaining, showcase a dramatic planting or guide the way along a path. But installing landscape lighting can be time-consuming and costly. The lights themselves can be pricy, and a licensed electrician needs to do the installation on all but the simplest do-it-yourself kits. Solar-powered lights just might be the answer. They’re reasonably priced, simple to install and safe to use. They can be moved easily as your landscape changes, May - June 2011

and give a bright, reliable light for most any application. Solar lights of yesteryear used to glow with only a dim incandescent bulb. Today, modern units use light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are semiconductors that put out light without hot, glowing filaments or fragile glass shells. They can reliably run upward of 100,000 hours. Solar landscape lighting can perform year-round, even in the cold, short days of winter. In fact, as temperatures drop, solid-state LEDs generate an even

brighter light. Today’s solar cells and rechargeable batteries are also more efficient, and the prices of both are coming down. Rechargeable solar batteries now use nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rather than nickel-cadmium (NiCAD). NiMH batteries stand up to more charge cycles, last longer and can finally be disposed of without harming the environment. For best effect, you must match landscape lights to their application. First, walk the property and develop a lighting plan.

Consider how you use your yard. Do you entertain outdoors or sit on a deck? Are you concerned about the safety of pathways? Are there a few favorite focal points you want to highlight? There are three basic landscape uses for solar lights: pathway, accent and spotlighting. Pathway lighting illuminates driveways, walkways and steps, and marks the edges of areas like ponds and patios for safety. These lights come attached to ground stakes, hang from hooks or 52

hile annuals can add that splash of bold color to a garden, they die at the end of the season, and must be planted again the following year. With wise perennial selections, you’ll have successions of color that come up year after year. Plant them once, and enjoy them for decades.

Perennials come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and textures. They are extremely versatile in rounding out a garden design. Often, they are the missing link that adds that wow factor to your yard. As you plan your garden look for gaps that you can fill in between the tree and shrub layer. Perennials can soften the transition areas in between these tiers. May - June 2011

Perennials 101 Perennials are economical because if you plant them once in growing conditions they prefer, they will bloom year after year. These hardy plants die down to the ground each year, survive the winter on food stored in underground stems and return the next year. Perennials typically

bloom for several weeks, so plant a variety for waves of colorful blooms. Functionality Besides their beauty, perennials provide functional benefits to your garden. They can help prevent runoff and erosion by absorbing water and providing stability through their roots. For example, the tenacious and easy-to-grow daylilies, with their spreading roots, can help anchor an eroding hillside. With perennials, you can create a diverse habitat that is perfect for butterflies, bees and other beneficial wildlife. Did you know that if you plant milkweed (Asclepias genus), you’ll be helping beautiful monarch butterflies that feed exclusively on this perennial? Varieties include swamp milkweed, common milkweed and butterfly weed. 52

resident John F. Kennedy loved his rocking chair so much that he would take it on Air Force One when he travelled. Prescribed by his doctor to release tension in his bad back, the president eventually bought many rockers to use in all his homes. “What most are unaware of is that rocking helps ADD/ADHD children and adults stay on task.” He has placed his Carolina rockers in airports including the Greensboro (N.C.) Airport to alleviate travel-related stress. One hundred of the company’s white No. 970 Lumbar Rockers are in the Philadelphia International Airport, an appropriate location because Philadelphia was the home of the American Windsor rocker, which some say was the first rocker made in the Colonies. The Kennedy rockers retail for $299 and are sold in L.L. Bean’s Maine flagship store. The hardwood oak frame has a hand-woven rattan back and seat, but you can add a cushion set for $89. They also come with a woven resin back and seat for outdoor use. The finishes are natural, dark harvest oak, black and white lacquer. This rock revival of sorts was evident during last fall’s International Home Furnishings Market in High Point. A North Carolina company, Troutman Chair Co., is the exclusive maker of the steam-bent rocker known as the Kennedy rocker. Troutman Chair, a family-owned business since 1924, is run by Champ and Jean Land. More than a place to perch and ponder, the rocking chair is being touted as effective therapy for everything from Alzheimer’s to constipation. Champ Land sponsors a website called Rockingchairtherapy. org. There you can find studies done by independent sources about the purported benefits of rocking for many ailments. “Many are aware that Jean King, a leading autism researcher in the ‘60s and ‘70s, recommended a rocker in the bedroom of every autistic child,” said Land, adding, The Kennedy Rocker. Other great plants include: purple coneflower (make sure to leave the seed heads on after they bloom, for the birds to eat), woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata), foamflower (Tiarella), Solomon’s seal, goldenrod (Solidago), native columbines (Aquilegia canadensis) and bee balm (Monarda). Don’t forget texture! While texture is often overlooked by some gardeners, ferns, with their varying shades of green, help punctuate shady garden spaces with the tactile zing of their delicate fronds. If you are new to perennials, start a small bed or border. Pick a few perennials, plant them in odd-numbered groupings, put the taller plants in the back and mulch the bed. Dust Mites: A Household Health By Rallie McAllister, M.D.

Y

ou can’t see them, but there’s a good chance you’re sharing your home with millions of microscopic vermin known as dust mites. For people with asthma and allergies, these pesky little creatures can make sniffling, sneezing and wheezing a way of life.

The dust mite is a major contributor to asthma and allergy symptoms, but most folks aren’t allergic to the mites themselves - it’s their droppings that cause the problem. The average mite takes up to 20 potty breaks a day, making dust mite feces one of the most common allergens worldwide. The dust mites themselves are eightlegged creatures with tiny, transparent bodies. Their diet consists largely of shed human skin cells and other debris typically found in house dust. If you’re not taking special precautions to eradicate them, it’s highly likely that your home is occupied by millions of dust mites. They burrow their way into your bedding, curtains, carpets and wall coverings. The bedroom is a popular hangout for dust mites. They love mattresses and pilMay - June 2011

lows, fluffy comforters, and fuzzy stuffed animals. Some experts speculate that after just a few years of use, a typical mattress may be inhabited by as many as 100,000 to 10 million dust mites. Since most of us spend a lot of time in the bedroom, it’s probably the best place to begin waging the war on mites. Start with a vigorous spring cleaning. Bedrooms and closets should be thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed once a week to remove dust. Dust mites and their waste materials are so tiny that they can pass right through standard vacuum cleaner bags and return to the air. Fitting your vacuum cleaner with a double-layered micro-filter bag or a highefficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is an excellent investment. 54

If exposure to dust mite dung makes you cough, sneeze or wheeze, it’s a good idea to wear a mask while you clean. If you’re highly allergic, you’ll need to invest in an airtight bubble suit or try to persuade someone else to do your chores for you. Since most mattresses and pillows can harbor millions of mites, it’s wise to cover them with specially designed mattress covers and pillow cases that are dust proof and impermeable to allergens. If you’ve had your pillow for a couple of years, chances are that its fluffy innards consist mostly of dust mites and their feces. To minimize the mite population in your pillow, it’s best to choose one made of synthetic materials, wash it weekly and replace it yearly. If your pillow won’t stand up to regular washing in hot water, you can pop it in the freezer for a day or two to kill the mites, then fluff it in a clothes dryer to remove their little corpses. Mites like your clothing almost as much as you do. Clothes that aren’t cleaned at least monthly can harbor roughly 20 times more mites than those that are washed on a regular basis. If you can’t bear the thought of doing all that laundry, wrapping your clothes in plastic and keeping your closet doors shut will help reduce your exposure. In other parts of the house, mites typically reside in fabric wallpaper, upholstered furniture and Venetian blinds. Be on the lookout for dust mites in the kitchen: They like to set up housekeeping in bags of flour and on the tops of canned goods. Since dust mites depend on moisture in the air to survive, reducing the humidity in your home can help. Mites thrive in warm temperatures with a relative humidity of about 60 percent. Using a dehumidifier and increasing the ventilation in your home can make conditions far less favorable for them. If you or a family member is allergic to dust mites, it’s likely that someone will end up doing a lot of laundry. Most experts recommend washing clothes, 74 May - June 2011

Tuning Our Gait Knee Osteoarthritis By Dr. David Lipschitz

This aggravating condition can cause disability, pain, difficulty with movement and other activities, and a poorer quality of life. In particular, osteoarthritis of the knee affects as many as 20 million Americans. In a recent report in Nature Reviews Rheumatology, researchers reviewed the role of mechanical and exercise approaches to improve symptoms and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee. Data clearly show that the way we walk is a major factor leading to the arthritis. The process of walking — though generally unappreciated — is a highly coordinated activity. Maintaining proper, physiological movements of your hip, knee and ankle joints can drastically reduce your risk of disease.

Plunge Into

I

f I were stranded on a desert island, what’s the one exercise I’d do every day? It’s the lunge. It builds and shapes the lower body like nothing else, and who doesn’t want stronger legs and a tighter butt?

May - June 2011

62

Lunging

If you do it correctly, it is safe and effective. Do it incorrectly, quickly, ignoring alignment, and your knees may suffer. There are many variations of the lunge — arms raised overhead, lunges with weights, eyes closed lunging — but I suggest you start with this one and build from there once you develop balance, stamina and confidence. Throughout this entire sequence you should be listening to the sound of your breath, inhaling and exhaling through your nose, if possible: Stand And Extend Stand in a relaxed, erect posture, your feet shoulder-width apart. On the exhale, step your right foot forward a few feet. Adjust the distance so the soles of your forward foot and back foot are flat on the ground. Next, bend your front knee so it is aligned with your front foot, but don’t let your knee extend beyond your toes. That’s very important. Your back leg is your anchor. Roll up onto your toes on that leg, and keep it steady and strong. Balance and breathe, front and back. Squeeze both inner thighs and feel energy surging through your legs, up your spine, right into your heart center, aiming as high as the crown of your head. Enjoy this pose. Settle into it and take a few slow deliberate breaths. Do it with the kind of strength that comes from relaxation, not struggle. Hands to the Ground On an exhale, slowly bring both hands to the ground in front of you, on either side of your forward foot. Again, watch your alignment, and make sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes. If

By Marilynn Preston

you can’t comfortably reach the ground with your palms or fingertips, use yoga blocks or books on either side. Expand Across Your Chest Once you feel stable -- back leg energized, front knee bent at a 90-degree angle, balancing lightly on both hands -- gently lift your chest and feel your heart open to the sky, even just a fraction. That will help stretch the front of your body, across your sternum. To enhance the stretch, create a visualization. I like to imagine a kite opening to the wind. Inflate Across Your Back Keep your chest lifted and your heart open, and focus on your shoulder blades. Create space between your shoulder blades, stretching broadly across your upper back. To expand across your lower back, form a mental picture of where your kidneys are — one anatomical drawing is worth a thousand words — and exhale into them, right and left, blowing them up as though you were inflating balloons. Straighten Your Bent Knee Now for the real fun. Exhale, and in one motion, gently straighten your front leg and bring your hands up so they can rest on your hips. Keep your balance, and maintain your breath. If you wobble or fall out of the lunge, so be it. Laugh it off, and start over. Once you’re stable, lift and expand your chest and open your heart once again as you feel the action in your legs and torso, front and back. Your hips should be balanced — not tilted right or left — and facing forward, like two headlamps on 74

Bananas -

I

f you want a quick energy boost eat a banana. Every ripe banana provides a great blend of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates that bolsters the body’s optimal performance.

The combination of a banana’s carbohydrates, simple sugars, starch and dietary fiber provides a rapid boost and sustained release of energy to help improve endurance and concentration. Our bodies convert foods into simple carbohydrates (sugars) for fuel, so the carbohydrates in a ripe banana, already in their simplest form, are easily digested. Yet a banana’s soluble fiber (3 grams) slows digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, leading to a more tempered and steady release of natural energy. The carbohydrates in a banana are both simple and complex, forming three natural sugars -- fructose (or fruit sugar, 4.9 grams), glucose (5 grams) and sucrose (2.4 grams) -- and giving the consumer instant and lasting energy. In addition to a banana’s being a good source of manganese, vitamin C (20 percent of the recommended daily allowance), vitamin B6 (25 percent of RDA) and dietary fiber (16 percent of RDA), each contains a gram of protein and small amounts of calcium and iron, among other vitamins and minerals. And bananas have no fat, cholesterol or sodium. A single banana is also a fantastic source of the mineral potassium (11 percent of May - June 2011

RDA). Potassium is involved in proper muscle contraction and electrolyte balance in blood and tissue cells, including in the heart. It is an essential mineral for protein synthesis and the building of muscle because it stimulates nerve impulses for muscle contraction. Potassium also is used by the body to convert glucose into energy, which then is stored and utilized by the muscles and liver. Potassium can reduce blood pressure and the risks of heart disease and stroke, and it assists in getting oxygen to the brain and enhancing mental clarity. An insufficient potassium level is one of the main causes of fatigue and cramping. Therefore, bananas have been used as nature’s prescription to prevent or relieve the following: tiredness, muscle spasms, stress, anxiety, heartburn and nausea. Some even believe the rubbing of the inside of a banana skin on the infected area of a mosquito bite can soothe the irritation and itching. Internet folklore has falsely reported that two bananas can provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout; even this wonder food cannot deliver that intensity. But a banana can provide a

64

lift from afternoon drowsiness, enhanced mental performance or a dose of energy for moderate aerobic activity. Bananas’ carbohydrates also are used to replace the muscle glycogen (muscle sugar) used during exercise. Because bananas rank high among fruits in carbohydrates (26 grams) and calories (105), some people on low-carb diets avoid them. But as we’ve seen lately in Japan, where the “Morning Banana” diet is taking the nation by storm, bananas are helping people to lose weight. That is likely because of their prebiotic fiber and resistant starch, two compounds that can increase fat burning and lessen appetite. Similarly, the Dole Nutrition Institute has created the Go Bananas 2-A-Day Challenge, in

By Chuck Norris

which participants consume two bananas and a glass of water in the morning to jump-start their metabolisms and bolster weight loss. All of these benefits of bananas are yours for a fraction of the price of an energy drink. In fact, for the price of one of those herbal cocktails, you can get a bunch of bananas, and they are 100 percent natural with no side effects. When one even compares an apple with a banana, an apple has less than one-tenth of the vitamin C, less than half the potassium, less than half the protein and twice the carbohydrates of a banana. So if it’s true for an apple, it’s definitely true for a banana: A banana a day can keep the doctor away. ∆ 65

iami, a tropical paradise with pristine beaches, pulsating nightlife, and world class hotels has always been a magnet for visitors from all over the world. During the turn-of-the-century, the city was the winter playground of the elite who came to enjoy the balmy weather and socialize with their peers at the Biltmore hotel. If they were friends of William and Rosamund Vanderbilt, they vacationed on Fisher Island. Today, these historic properties, part of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World, continue to attract sophisticated visitors who appreciate the ambiance and allure of such famous resorts.

Fontana features a classical menu of Italian favorites prepared to order in their open kitchen. Don’t miss the Fettuccine Integrali, a whole-wheat pasta with mushrooms, spinach, and sun dried tomato pesto. Complete your meal with a bottle of Barolo wine. Palme d’Or is an elegant, “white glove”

restaurant with a classic French menu. Start with the velvety lobster bisque, or the caramelized scallop with crispy sweetbread and a cauliflower cream. Continue with the roasted venison with Grand-Veneur sauce, or order some of their outstanding seafood dishes. The sumptuous Champagne Sunday Brunch is an event not to be missed. The tables are set in the inner courtyard around the Venetian fountain and along the Roman arches. Food stations are laden with fresh oysters on ice, king crab legs, lobster seviche, caviar, salads, carved meats, cheeses, and fruit. Fisher Island Hotel & Resort

In 1925 William Kissam Vanderbilt II, the great grandson of famed “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt, built his luxurious personal retreat on Fisher Island, a private 216 acre property in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. His Mediterranean-style mansion, surrounded by guest cottages, swimming pools, and lush landscaping, soon became a favorite winter escape where Mr. Vanderbilt and wife Rosamund entertained the luminaries of their time. Today, restored to its original grandeur, Fisher Island is an exclusive world-class residential community and club, home

to jet setters, celebrities, and business leaders. It is a safe, serene paradise, only minutes away but a world apart from the hustle and bustle of South Beach and Downtown Miami. Access to the island, via private yachts or the Fisher Island ferry, is limited to residents, their guests, and visitors who stay at the Fisher Island Hotel & Resort. Once you arrive on the island, a hotel staffer in a golf cart greets you and leads you to the main lobby where you are welcomed with iced champagne and chilled juice. The hotel’s central building is the original Vanderbilt Mansion, now home to the intimate Garwood Restaurant and Lounge, elegant ballrooms, and a large courtyard shaded by a century old Banyan tree. Accommodations are in cottages and suites with bedrooms, living rooms, oversized baths, kitchenettes, and large terraces overlooking the bay or the lush landscape. Every unit also has a golf cart, the primary mode of transportation on the island. Hop on your own cart and start a tour of the property. Drive by the the-nine hole golf course (it can also be played as 18 holes), the tennis courts (two grass, fourteen clay and two hard surfaces), a cove beach with powdery white sand, (brought in from the Bahamas), two deep water marinas, elegant restaurants, outdoor bars, and a spa. Stop along the water’s edge and take in the spectacular views of the Miami and South Beach skylines.
