Raising An Entre
I
f you have children you’re
trying to prepare for the real world, it’s hard to know what to tell them anymore. Get good grades? Go to college? Find a job with a good company and you’ll be rewarded?
This may be the advice your parents gave you and, hopefully, it paid off. But the words don’t ring true anymore. College degrees are a dime a dozen, new grads are moving back home burdened with sixfigure debt, and the gold-watch jobs are a relic of another age. According to Gregory Downing, author of Entrepreneur Unleashed: Wealth to Stand the Test of Time, if you’re teaching your kids to follow the old formula, you’re doing them a huge disservice. We’ve entered the age of the entrepreneur, and only those who have the right mindset and skill set will thrive. “I’m not saying every young person will end up starting his own business, November - December 2012
although I do believe it’s the best path to financial freedom and a rewarding life,” says Downing. “What I am saying is that even if he does get a job or enter a profession, employers will expect him to work and think like an entrepreneur.” Yes, the world has fundamentally changed, and those who blindly pursue the rules of an earlier time will be left behind. That means parents must start teaching kids how to think about working and building wealth in a profoundly different way. He says there are certain fundamental truths parents need to teach their kids about being an entrepreneur. Here are some of the most important:
18
preneurial Child
Mindset matters The old path to success — get good grades, go to college, get a good job, work hard for 40 years, and retire comfortably— no longer works in a flat global economy. Even if your children manage to find a “good job,” the income it yields may not be enough to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Multiple streams of income will be necessary — Downing stresses the importance of having all three types: earned, passive, and portfolio — and kids need to get their minds around this reality now. Of course, the entrepreneurial mindset isn’t just about wealth building. It’s also about being able to find fresh solutions
Dotti DeHart
to problems no one has ever thought to solve, to figure out how what you offer can be applied to new markets, and to team up with other people in such a way that everyone wins. Opportunity is everywhere Develop a nose for finding it. As a parent, it’s up to you to point out opportunities as you see them. If you’re at a golf tournament in July you can say, “Wouldn’t this be a great place to sell ice water, sunscreen, and hats?” Or if your child is talking about how no one at afterschool daycare can ever seem to get their homework done, you might say, “Wouldn’t it be great to start a business where high school students come
19
Hi Class Living
to after school daycares to tutor younger kids?” Ask them how they think such a business might work. “Do this regularly and before you know it, kids will be thinking up ideas on their own,” says Downing. Your brand will create the foundation for your business Depending on their ages, your kids may or may not be familiar with the word “brand.” But explain to them that, basically, it comes down to what they want to be known for. Neatness? Friendliness? Trustworthiness? Then, start a dialogue on how to make that happen — and how to avoid doing things that might tear down that brand. “Let’s say your child is a babysitter and wants to be known for dependability,” says Downing. “Talk through what that means: Always show up on time, for instance. Don’t chat on the phone while you’re supposed to be watching the kids. And don’t cancel unless it’s absolutely necessary — and wanting to go to a cool party you just heard about isn’t a good excuse. Let the customer down just once and all your hard work was for nothing.” You need a differentiator Help your kids determine what makes their business different and explain how it will bring them more business. Maybe they offer an exceptional level of personal service. Maybe they cater to a certain group or meet a particular need. Maybe they’re eco-friendly. Help kids talk through what makes them different and better. Ask them how they might play up their differentiator and use it to get themselves seen in a crowded marketplace. “If your son is a dog walker, he might always wear a ‘uniform’ with his name on the pocket,” says Downing. “It will make him seem more professional and trustworthy to people worried about turning their beloved pet over to a teenager. Or if your daughter is a babysitter, she might always bring a fresh batch of homemade cookies or a selection of fun DVDs to the house. The November - December 2012
kids will specifically ask for her.” Know the value of marketing Having a great business idea is one thing. Telling people about it is another. Help kids figure out ways to maximize their exposure without spending a ton of money (which they probably don’t have) or turning off potential customers with a hard sell approach. Teach them to introduce themselves and talk about their business when it’s appropriate: “I heard you mention your dog, Buster. I wanted to let you know I have a pet sitting business if you ever need that.” Specifically, you might work with them to develop several “scripts” (elevator speeches) about their business to use in a variety of settings. Also, help them create some simple business cards to hand out. Sometimes you have to give something away up-front Explain that before people will be willing to pay for your product or service, they need a taste of how great it is just to get their attention. That might mean giving out a free sample of their homemade salsa or offering a free hour of math tutoring to new customers. “The trick is always learning how much to give away without giving away the farm,” says Downing. “This is a balancing act that will need to be walked again and again throughout an entrepreneur’s life.” A big part of success is learning how to manage your own business When your child wants to start a lemonade stand, you will be tempted to provide the lemonade mix, the cups, and the poster board for the sign in order to give your child a leg up. You may also want to get out the calendar and figure out a schedule that works for him and takes advantage of high traffic. While you can offer helpful hints and be supportive, don’t do these things for him, says Downing. “Kids need to do the work themselves,” he insists. “Only by handling the 30

Anti-Procrastin
P
rocrastination torpedoes productivity, harms self-esteem and is the source of massive amounts of stress. So why do we do it and why is it so hard to overcome?
November - December 2012

ation Strategies
Piers Steel, social scientist, professor and author of the marvelous book “The Procrastination Equation,” explains that procrastination occurs when our logical planning brain, the prefrontal cortex, intends to do something but that plan gets overridden by our more powerful, impulsive and emotional brain, the limbic system, because it has a competing desire. Steel has actually developed a calculation that predicts our likelihood to procrastinate, which involves expectations about whether you can actually complete
Sarah Welch and Alicia Rockmore
the task, the importance you place on the task and how long you have to complete it. But probably the most important driver of your likelihood to procrastinate is your overall level of impulsiveness. Those who struggle to not act on impulse or fight to control their feelings are more likely to procrastinate than others. Do you tend to put things off? Here are 12 effective strategies for avoiding procrastination. Place a physical “impulse interrupter” on procrastination devices like TVs and game consoles Do you have a go-to procrastination activity like watching TV or playing video games? If so, you might benefit from placing a physical reminder of more productive tasks actually on your procrastination device of choice. For example, place a book you have to read for class on top of your game console or tape a note to your TV remote control that says, “Can you really afford to turn this on?” These kinds of physical reminders can interrupt the impulsive pattern looping in your limbic system and give your prefrontal cortex a fighting chance to get the upper hand and focus you on your tasks. Set your egg timer In many instances our brains overestimate the amount of time it will take to complete a task. Set your egg timer or the timer on your smartphone for a specific amount of time, and see if you can beat the clock. The timer increases the urgency
23
Hi Class Living
you feel to get the work done. Eliminate alerts
Vibrating phones, email dings, socialmedia peeps are effectively conditioning you to procrastinate and/or interrupt more productive work. Turn off all alerts on your computers and cellphones. You want to be in control of them, not vice versa. Pay for blocking software In this day and age of uber-connectivity, those who work on their computers have virtual work spaces that are quite literally surrounded by enticing distracters, like Facebok pages, other social-media sites and gazillions of websites and blogs. Mercifully, there are software programs available for purchase, like Concentrate for Macs (http://getconcentrating.com/) and Freedom for Macs and PCs (http:// macfreedom.com/). Take it from us, as we use both programs frequently, they are worth their weight in gold. Stand up and do breathing exercises for two to five minutes Shallow breathing and/or holding your breath, both of which people are likely to do when watching TV or while hunched over a computer, triggers your body’s fight-or-flight reflex and effectively shuts down your prefrontal cortex. To put your long-term-planning brain back in business, take a few minutes and do some breathing exercises like four-in, seven-out, eight-in. Keep impulse-drivers out of your environment Messy desks and rooms offer a compelling distraction. Set up a routine, a set time and day once a week, to give your environment a clean sweep. The less mess around you, the greater the chances you will be able to concentrate. Reward the completion of small goals Rewarding little goals can be the key to accomplishing big ones. November - December 2012
Designate an antiprocrastinating buddy Sometimes you simply need someone you can call when you are having a weak moment. Ask a conscientious friend or family member if you can call when you feel yourself heading down procrastination highway or before you start to work on a big, important task. The quick pep talk is likely to increase your motivation levels — and increase your chances of being productive. Develop and repeat an if-then statement Research is emerging showing that simple if-then statements are very effective at helping you follow through on good intentions. For example, if you have to get a writing project done, create a statement that says, “If I find myself procrastinating by (pick your most frequent poison), then I will stand up, do deep-breathing exercises and turn my attention to (the task I was putting off).” Repeat it to yourself out loud on a regular basis. Identify your peak hour We all have a time of day when we are naturally more alert and productive than others. Determine what that time is for you and set appointments to do work that requires concentration during that time window. Break down problems Doing one activity at a time can increase your chance of successfully overcoming your procrastination. Make a commitment to someone Commit that you will get a task done by a certain date and/or time that is well in advance of the actual deadline. Accountability is a powerful driver. When you know that someone else is expecting something from you, it helps keep you on track. ∆

a new baby, a new house, or a new job anxiety. But when it comes to financial doesn’t necessarily mean different. getting back to basics. START WITH YOUR PERSONAL NET WORTH Create a personal net worth statement. This is basically a snap shot of what you own (your assets) and what you owe (your liabilities). It will help you understand your current financial situation and provide a reference point for measuring your progress. Start by adding up your assets. Include checking, savings and money market accounts, CDs, savings bonds and the cash value of any life insurance policies. Add in investment accounts, both taxable brokerage accounts and retirement accounts. If you have ownership in a business, add that in as well. Then estimate your home equity and the value of personal property such as cars, home furnishings, art and jewelry. Now look at your liabilities. This includes short-term obligations such as credit card balances and other outstanding bills, as well as long-term debt such as your mortgage or home equity loan, car loans and student loans. To get your net worth, simply subtract your total liabilities from your total assets. If your net worth is in the plus, great. If it’s in the minus, you’ve got some work to do. REVIEW YOUR MONTHLY CASH FLOW Now that you have the big picture, get into the specifics. Are you on top of monthly expenses? A good exercise is to write down your essential expenses such as your mortgage, food, transportation and loan payments. (Include savings in this list.) Be sure to factor in big-ticket

up. Opening a 529 college savings account is one of the best ways to provide for a child’s future education with some tax savings along the way -- and grandparents and other family members can contribute as well.
GET THE RIGHT INSURANCE COVERAGE It’s axiomatic that you need health insurance. But now that you have a child, you should also look into life insurance. A term-life policy can be a practical and affordable way to make sure you have enough coverage to replace your income and provide for your child should something happen to either of you.
MAKE A WILL This is also to protect your child. A will not only designates how you want your assets distributed, it lets you appoint a guardian. In fact, in most states, a will is the only way to appoint a legal guardian for your minor children. It’s pretty straightforward and inexpensive, and to my mind, essential.
SET SOME SAVINGS GOALS Start saving for retirement through a company retirement plan and/or an IRA. Being on top of current finances is important, but getting a head start on retirement is equally important. This should be a top savings goal. Also on your savings list should be an emergency fund to cover at least three months of essential living expenses. Keep these funds in an easily accessible account. This will help keep you out of panic mode should something unexpected happen. In addition, it’s smart to start thinking about college. Costs are only likely to go
START INVESTING Once you’ve accumulated some savings, take advantage of growth potential. Learn more about investing and get started with something like a broad-based mutual fund or exchange-traded fund. TAKE IT STEP BY STEP Don’t think you have to accomplish all this at once. Come up with a step-by-step plan. Then make a date to review your financial picture monthly, not only to check your progress and refine your goals but also to congratulate yourselves for being smart money managers. ∆

ove over skinny jeans; there are some new style moves in town this season. Fashion is fun again with bright colors, bold shapes and glamorous graphic prints.
Here’s a list of some of the biggest hits this season: Tough black leather You’ve gotta have at least one piece of leather in your wardrobe. It’s the new “go-with-everything” fashion trend that gives you the freedom to mix and match anything and everything as well as add a little new slickness. From sleek zippered jackets to cropped pants or quilted skirts, take your pick and put some modern spin into your life. The lace dress Kate Middleton may have inspired lots of fans with her chic slip dresses covered in lace, but now you, too, can dress like a princess. There are lots of interpretations of this favorite available this fall, and chances are you’ll love wearing one of these to not only any cocktail event but also holiday parties as well. Printed pants These can be tricky but oh, so fun, too.
November - December 2012
Choose a pair of trousers in a graphic print. (I think the smaller patterns are best.) Then you can pair them with a solid-colored sweater or jacket. If you’re really adventurous, pair printed pants with another coordinating print. A colorful coat or jacket What one piece can really make a statement in your wardrobe this fall? One bold coat or jacket in an intense color. Whether it’s a traditional trench style or a menswear overcoat or a patent parka, any outerwear piece this year makes a real style statement in color from pastels to brights. A heavyweight sweater Cooler weather always means a return to sweater staples. So take advantage of the new textured knits and warm up your wardrobe by mixing them in with your printed pants and skirts. The gold piece Metallics are making a golden statement. plenty of reasons to be a golden girl this season — from shimmering gold jeans to leather shift dresses and embroidered jackets. Accessory tip: Animal print shoes and boots are tres chic with the golden girl glamour. The pantsuit Designers are matching trousers, pencil skirts and jackets this season. The suits are made contemporary with architectural silhouettes that are menswear inspired but still feminine. Don’t hesitate to combine these “matched” pieces with other things in your wardrobe... like a leather jacket... or colorful blouses to give them even more versatility. ∆ The lace slip dress is a fall favorite. Forget the boring basics. After all, we wear our coats day in and day out. They say a lot about our personal sense of style. Check out these new trends. The menswear topcoat, one of the season’s hottest outerwear looks, is a little on the slouchy size. Some with sculpted exaggerated shoulders and lapels, often in knee-lengths in colorful jewel tones, cobalt blue, ruby red and emerald green are a few of the more vivid favorites. Or if you’re more of the classic, earthy type, there are plenty of rusts, camels and grays to round out your winter wardrobe. The military-inspired coat It’s all about the details on this style. don’t have to feel like you’re off to basic duty, but instead choose a more sophisticated “officers” coat with just a hint of the brass buttons, pocket flaps, epaulets, belts and buckles. The parka This ski-inspired shape is a great winter warm-up when the temperature hits below the freezing mark. In drawstring anorak styles, parkas can be even more streamlined and stylish, and you won’t risk feeling like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Look for even more value with inside-out reversible parkas. The puffy vest Also akin to the ski-inspired trend, the puffier vest is one solution to outerwear that will stave off the chills and yet easily layer over chunky knits and T-shirts. In bright colors, this piece will be a real perk for gray winter days. The blanket coat If you really want to get comfy in your coat, choose a blanket-style wrap or coat in a graphic stripe or check. Many of this season’s blanket coats have a Western vibe and make great weekend toppers when worn with boots and jeans. The princess coat Dressed up or down, this tailored look, often detailed with pleats and seams, can be a stylish outerwear alternative for dresses and pantsuits. The traditional 46

For even more fun, check out a vivid color-blocked handbag or add a handbag covered with fur. Medieval-inspired jewelry Think Gothic with a metallic twist. Sculptured rings The big cocktail ring has grown up into a piece of art. The newest rings take on an artistic flair in icy crystals or molten metals. The embellished shoe Perhaps one of the season’s most exciting buys and one of the fastest ways to make old clothes look and feel new. Whether it’s a pair of embroidered tuxedo slippers or a textured metallic high heel, the shoes are stunners this fall. The leather or suede boot What’s a fall wardrobe without at least one pair of boots? And this year, there are so many styles to choose from you may want to start collecting a whole wardrobe of boots. Start with a pair of edgy ankle boots. Or step out in a pair of classic equestrian-inspired boots. And if you’re really adventurous, the spike-heeled, thigh-high
boots are a real attention getter. A graphic printed scarf
It’s another way to instantly update your clothes. Scarves have come a long way since the days of the fringed pashmina. This season wrap up in a colorful, printed silk scarf that’s on the plus size for more impact. Colorful tights Still love to live in an all black wardrobe? Never fear. Inject some color into your ensembles with a pair of opaque tights in cobalt blue, fiery red or emerald green. Short gloves With all the lady-like handbags and shoes out there this fall, it doesn’t come as a surprise that short, wrist-style gloves are back in a big way. Check them out in bold colors or classic black and white leather. Tres chic. ∆

I am so sorry.” Even better is making a phone call when things are going well: “I just wanted to let you know that Princess is doing fine. She didn’t eat a lot this morning, but after our evening walk she ate a whole bowlful of food.” That phone call will ease the client’s mind and really distinguish your child from the competition. 47

rom black leather to inky blue denim and velvety merlot corduroy jackets, the bright lights of men’s fashion trends have been turned down low and a more mysterious side of sartorial news has emerged.
So what will turn up in the best-dressed guys’ closet this season? Tom Julian, a fashion consultant with the New York-based Tom Julian Group and a men’s style author, shares his must-haves. Double the style
Julian advises adding a double-breasted suit, sport coat, sweater or outerwear jacket to your wardrobe. “Most men have moved away from the three-button look to the two-button look, so why not add a double-breasted style?” asks Julian. “Think of this look as more casual and easy, not quite as buttoned up as the double-breasted suits worn by Prince Charles.” Accent on leather Skin is in this season, says Julian, especially when worn as accents on coats or sweaters — perhaps on the sleeves or set into chest panels of coats or when mixed
with other fabrics for even more texture interest. Tweed please
Again, texture plays a big role in men’s fashion trends this season. So snap up a pair of tweed or corduroy pants. “Tweed can be the trouser for a business look paired with a navy blazer, while cords can be cut like a jean and ideal for weekend dressing,” says Julian. One of the best new colors to show off those textured pants? Look for tasty Bordeaux to spice up your wardrobe. Round it out
Don’t be square. Instead, check out a rounded collar on shirts or polo shirts to add a new look to jackets or pull-over sweater vests. “The basic shirt or polo looks a bit British with this different rounded collar,” says Julian. But he cautions: “Please wear this collar open 47

Fill them in with a brow pencil. A Dining Table
Mary Carol Garrity
Since a dining table is an investment, you should pick one that fits you, your home and your lifestyle. I ask all my customers five key questions. Will the table be used every day or only when you entertain?
How do you use your dining table? Is it the hub of your home, the place where your family gathers for every meal, where the kids do their homework
45
Hi Class Living
and where you spread out your current project? Or do you use it only on special occasions? If your table will be in constant use, you’ll want one that can take a lot of abuse and still look lovely. I’d steer you one with a more distressed top, so any nicks or dings won’t be as noticeable. Or, one that has a tough, durable surface that’s also easy to clean. If your dining table is only used a few times a year, you can pick a table that is a bit more fine and fragile. However, I still encourage you to get a table that can handle the rigor of a robust dinner party. How many people do you need to seat at the table? If possible, select a table that can seat everyone even during the holidays. That may mean one with extra leaves. What is the style of the room where you’ll dine? Your dining table needs to harmonize with the room’s style. Notice I didn’t say the table needs to “match.” I like it when people mix things up, weaving together different sorts of furniture to keep the interior design interesting. Pinpoint the room’s style. Is it traditional, contemporary or transitional? Formal or informal? What about your home’s overall style? You want the table to look like it belongs. What size table and chairs will fit? One of the biggest mistakes is getting

a dining table that’s too large for the space. At minimum, you need to allow a berth of 36 inches around the table just to pull out standard-sized dining chairs. If you’re using larger chairs, you’ll need even more room. What type of chairs do you want around your table? Picking chairs to go with your dining table is fun these days. Table and chair combos are exciting and dynamic, giving you the freedom to tailor them to reflect your design style. If you want to mix things up, work within your own comfort zone. For some people, that’s pairing a table with a set of slightly different chairs. For others, that means an odd assortment of dissimilar chairs. Just make sure the end product is pleasing to your eye and harmonious with itself, the room and your home design overall. One of my favorite looks right now is using wing-backed upholstered chairs for host and hostess chairs. Watch out for the height of the chair — many are too low to use at a dining table. Some people like using benches instead of dining chairs so they can seat a varying number of people. Some use short benches at the end of rectangular dining tables so they can fit in a few more folks. Another fun variation is to use a settee or a pair of settees on the sides of a table. It’s just the right amount of space for a grandparent to sit flanked by two grandkids. What could be better at Thanksgiving? ∆

This year the olive greens have a real military vibe. The Big T Turtleneck, that is. This classic piece is back this season in a major way. Julian suggests taking the soft approach and choosing a little luxurious touch with cashmere mixed with silk or cotton. “The turtleneck still seems a bit Beatles,” he admits, “but today it can be dressy and worn with a suit or sporty and worn with denim.” Dark denim Denim is always a wardrobe staple, but this season, whether it’s a shirt or jacket or a jean, the denim is in darker colors, such as
black or blue or burgundy. Get vested It’s the best layering piece you can buy. “Use the vest as an accessory item. Young men like to wear a vest with T-shirts or knit Henleys. Other guys that like to dress up a bit can pair it with a shirt and tie,” he says. Boot it Kick off cooler weather with the “musthave” footwear of the season. Julian suggests buying at least one new pair of boots. “Think either urban and biker or rugged and Red Wing.” Top it all off The accessory making fashion headlines is the newsboy cap in fabrics like tweed or flannel — a great way to put some flair into anything you wear. ∆

How to Bring Joy And Peace To The Holidays Dottie DeHart
T
he holiday
season is here, and if you’re like most people, you’re dealing with a snowstorm of notso-joyful feelings. November - December 2012
You have the stress of buying a vast array of gifts and juggling an overpacked schedule. You have obligatory family visits, which may carry their own emotional baggage. It’s no wonder that the holidays invoke a sense of dread instead of heralding the peace and joy we want them to bring. “Most of us have mixed feelings about the winter holidays,” says Susan Apollon, author of Touched by 58
the Extraordinary, Book Two: Healing Stories of Love, Loss & Hope. “On one hand, we look forward to the festive atmosphere and the spiritual rituals. On the other, we dread the stress and expense.” According to Apollon, the holidays can be rich and rewarding. But first, you’ve got to learn to manage your expectations and live each moment to the fullest. Apollon gives the following tips on how to defuse your
seasonal dread and infuse your holidays with joy and peace. Love and forgive yourself unconditionally
Before you can make peace with, say, the emotionally abusive mother you dread seeing at your Hanukkah get-together, you must first make peace with yourself. Loving yourself is really the key to resolving deepseated feelings of pain and guilt that surface during the holidays.
59
Hi Class Living
Choose to forgive others If you are holding a grudge against the cousin who excluded you from her wedding invitation list, you will dread seeing her at the big Christmas dinner. Apollon says the bad feelings that arise whenever you think of this slight are a sign that you need to forgive her. Doing so will dissolve the tension between the two of you and will make the event far more pleasant. And remember, you’re not doing it for her — you’re doing it for you. If there’s someone in your life you are simply not ready to forgive, just accept that there is a price to be paid in terms of your own peace of mind. It’s okay to avoid holiday events if you are absolutely not ready to see these people. But because life is about constant growth, know that one day you may be better equipped to let go of old grievances. Until then, continue to love yourself unconditionally and treat yourself well. Know what you can and cannot control Learning that you can control only your own actions and feelings is vital to becoming a happier person. Many people cannot forgive others and move away from past pain because they don’t understand this fact. Control struggles are huge emotion and energy drainers, says Apollon. The moment you understand that you can manage only your own feelings and thoughts, you will find power you didn’t know you had. When you continue to hold someone accountable for a past grievance, you allow her to hurt you all over again. But when you choose to simply let it go, you give yourself permission to heal and you release the ghost that was holding you captive. When grief rears up, learn to “Face, Embrace, and Replace It” If you’re dealing with grief at the holidays — perhaps due to a death in the family, an estrangement from someone you love, or a divorce — don’t try to deny your pain. November - December 2012
Rather, make a conscious effort to work through it. Apollon’s mantra on dealing with grief is “face it, embrace it, and replace it.” In other words, the only way to “get over” sadness is to experience it. Don’t over-commit to the holidays Most people vow that this year they won’t stretch themselves too thin (physically, emotionally, and financially), but somehow they spend the holidays exhausted, frazzled, and broke. It is hard to feel joyful and loving when you are exhausted from too many parties and you’re out of cash. It really is okay to choose only a few special events to attend — and don’t feel guilty about skipping out on your in-laws’ personal-drama-filled party in favor of a quiet evening baking cookies and wrapping presents with your kids. It’s your life, and you get to live it your way. Get in the joy zone In order to be ready for the impending holiday cheer, you may need a little inspiration. You can rev up your level of good cheer by doing something that makes you feel great. Indulge in a sinful dessert or sleep in sheets with a high thread count to feel pampered. Listen to your favorite holiday album, or attend temple to get in a seasonal mood. Remember that peace and joy are contagious, so if you put it out there, chances are very good that you will get it back! Do a practice run before the dreaded event Before going to a holiday function, you can actually “rehearse” the event to help you get in a positive frame of mind. Chances are that at any get-together, there will be at least one person you don’t really want to see. Think of this person and begin to surround him or her with love and forgiveness. When you fill yourself with love, you will be able to enter the party with the proper frame of mind — and you may find that being kind and spreading holiday cheer is a little easier than you had expected! 86

The Psychology Of
T
he holidays are almost here, and in addition to festive time spent with family and friends, it means a small fortune spent on gifts and other non-necessities. “It is a very difficult time of the year to stick to a budget and the reasons why are numerous and complex,” says Leslie Greenman, author of the book Dating Our Money: A Women’s Guide to Confidence with Money & Men. “One of the biggest reasons is that women tend to be givers and pleasers by nature. We want to buy great gifts for friends and family members. We want to get the best looking decorations for the house. “We convince ourselves it’s okay to overspend because Christmas only comes once a year!” she adds. “This is our time to forget the budget and do whatever we can to make those around us happy. So in the name of making the holiday the best one ever, we carefully avoid the truth about our financials. After all, if we don’t know for certain that we’re going way over the family budget, then what’s stopping us from spending a little more on the kids’ presents or buying that new dress for the office party?” Greenman notes that the nature of holiday spending — the fact that we’re buying for others November - December 2012

and not ourselves (in theory anyway) — increases our tendency to overspend. “Many women think the holidays give us a guilt-free pass to shop ’til we drop,” says Greenman. “We justify it by telling ourselves, ‘Well, I have to get gifts for everyone or they’ll be disappointed!’ While it’s nice to give someone something they want, that good feeling will quickly fade when you see how much your holiday spending affected the family’s finances.” The good news is that with careful planning you can give everyone on your list a special holiday without having to pay for it for months and months to come. Read on for Greenman’s advice on how to better understand the psychology of overspending and what you can do to stop it: Get real about your financials Before you step out the door to head off to the next great sale, you need to be honest with yourself. Sit down with your spouse and have a heart-to-heart about your financials. Make sure you both understand what the budget will allow for in holiday spending this year. “Look at how much you can realistically spend,” advises Greenman. “Make sure your holiday spending will in no way negatively affect your bigger plans. Too often, women think of the financial picture like it’s a black hole. Credit cards are a huge cause of this because they allow us to avoid the reality of debt. We can just whip out our credit card without taking an immediate hit in our bank account. But that has to stop. Now is the time to gain a clear understanding of the family financials. When you do so, you’ll be more inclined to control your spending.” Don’t let the psychology of the sale get the best of you Shoppers were out in droves this year on Black Friday in part because they were hammered with promotions on sales that that were just too good to resist. When there’s a great sale, two factors are usually used to justify spending, explains GreenNovember - December 2012
man. First off, we fear that if we don’t take advantage of the sale now we might not be able to get that item later. And secondly, most women love to feel like they’ve gotten a great deal when they’re shopping. “Even if the on-sale item is still too much for your budget, you convince yourself that it’s ok to splurge a little in this case because the deal being offered is so good,” she says. “But let’s be honest. Going over budget is going over budget. It doesn’t matter what purchase is deepening your debt; just that your debt is increasing. So don’t let holiday sales get the best of your budget. If an item is too much for your personal financial situation, don’t buy it.” Don’t shop when you’ve got the holiday blues This time of year can bring a lot of joy, but it can also be overwhelming and stressful. What’s more, the holidays are filled with grief triggers — sights, sounds and smells that bring back memories of days past when life was better and loved ones hadn’t yet passed on. Those holiday blues, whether we understand why we’re feeling them or not, can pose a pocketbook problem: studies have shown that we are willing to spend more when we’re sad. “Avoid shopping when you’re having a down day,” advises Greenman. “Curl up and watch a holiday movie or go do something fun with your kids instead. Save the shopping for a better mood. ” Invest in relationships, not in “stuff” It’s perfectly natural to want to give back to those who give to you. It feels good to watch a friend open the gift you’ve given her or to see your son’s face light up when he sees Santa brought him everything on his list. This satisfies the nurturing instinct in women, in particular. And it also helps us assuage the guilt we often feel for the shortage of time we have to spend with our loved ones. What we need to realize is that what other people really want, kids and adults alike, is our presence (not our presents).
64
“According to a Consumer Reports poll, holiday shoppers will spend approximately 19 hours shopping and 3 hours standing in check-out lines this holiday season,” says Greenman. “Aren’t there much better ways we could be spending our time? Rather than throw down cash to buy the video games your son wants, spend a day with him doing the things he loves to do. Suggest to your best friend an afternoon together meeting for coffee and going to a movie. Or treat your parents to a homecooked meal and some Christmas carols performed by their grandkids. You can also take this a step further and make it even more gratifying for everyone involved. Suggest to your loved ones that the time you spend together be used to volunteer for a local charity — a great way to enjoy the true spirit of the season!” Establish an “Operation Holiday” plan Once you know what your budget is, start mapping out your shopping plan. Make the gift list and then think about where you’ll need to go to purchase each present. The specificity will override the “vagueness trap” that allows us to fool ourselves about how much we’re really spending. “The more specific your plan, the easier it will be for you to hold yourself accountable to it,” notes Greenman. “Keep your key goals in mind, both short-term and long-term. For example, are you trying to keep each gift under X amount of dollars? Do you want to be finished by a certain time? Do you still need to have enough money left over in the budget to make your monthly donation to the family summer vacation fund? Don’t sacrifice your longterm financial plans to satisfy short-term holiday spending cravings.” Don’t put off your shopping until the week before Christmas
It is best to start your holiday shopping as many shopping days before Christmas as you can. Procrastinating will only send
you into a state of panic that usually ends in overspending. “As the holiday gets closer and you realize you haven’t even made a dent in your list, you’ll start to get desperate,” explains Greenman. “And when you’re desperate, you won’t have as many misgivings about going over budget in order to get your shopping done. You’ll also have less time to finish your shopping so you’ll think you have to get whatever is available. ‘Shop early and save’ should be your new motto. Another positive to getting all your shopping out of the way early is that it gives you more time to kick back and enjoy all of the fun festivities leading up to the holidays.” Set a holiday shopping curfew You don’t have to go tearing through stores, pushing innocent shoppers from your path (or spraying them with pepper spray as one much-publicized shopper did on Black Friday), but setting a time limit on your shopping will help you keep your spending impulses in check and stay on budget. “When you know you only have until 3:00 p.m. to finish your shopping, you won’t linger in the women’s clothing section until you see something you want to buy for yourself,” notes Greenman. “It also keeps you from going to sections of a store that you know don’t contain any items from your list but that are just fun to spend time in. Remember, the less time you spend shopping, the more time you’ll have to spend with friends and family.” Remember, it’s the thought that counts You might find the perfect gift for someone but then reject it because you don’t think the price is significant enough to be an adequate gift. That’s because we unconsciously equate love with money. Not only is there absolutely no connection between the two, this self-imposed spending minimum can lead us to bypass meaningful gifts in favor of expensive, less meaningful ones (which the recipient 74

A race to make sure your kids have the perfect academic, extracurricular, and personal qualifications so that they can get into a good college. A race to make sure all the bills get paid. However, instead of building the perfect lives we want, what we’re really doing is racing each other into the ground…and over the edge. If this last description of manic modern life sounds all too familiar, it’s high time you stepped off the merrygo-round (for at least five to ten minutes), sat down in a quiet place, and participated in a simple practice that has been around for millennia: meditation. “When people operate on low margins with time and money (which is everybody I know right now), their stress levels can go through the roof,” points out psychotherapist Stephan Bodian, author of Meditation For Dummies®, “In many ways, meditation is the perfect antidote to the postmodern predicament because it effectively reduces stress, increases energy, and enables you to enjoy better overall health…and much more.” “Since our culture programs us to expect a perfect life that is impossible to achieve, our best efforts only cause us to become overstressed, overscheduled, overstimulated, and overtired,” explains Bodian. “This is all compounded by the fact that your body and mind have been ‘programmed’ to respond to life’s inevitable ups and downs with stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. But
you have the power to change all of that through meditation. You can program yourself to experience inner peace, harmony, equanimity, and joy.” Bodian assures that you can keep it simple (you’ll see positive results after just five to ten minutes of meditation a day) or explore the practice’s subtleties in great depth. It’s entirely up to you. If you’re intrigued but still not entirely sure that meditation is for you, here are 11 more reasons why this ancient practice can help you live your best, most healthy and fulfilling life: Improving your mental and physical health If you’re a skeptic at heart, then you’ll be reassured to know that studies have proven that meditation offers numerous benefits, including: Lower blood pressure Quicker recovery from stress Fewer heart attacks and strokes Reduced cholesterol levels Muscle relaxation Reduction in the intensity of pain More happiness and peace of mind More loving, harmonious relationships Enhanced creativity and self-actualization Reductions in both acute and chronic anxiety Heightened perceptual clarity and sensitivity …and much more! Awakening to the present moment When you rush breathlessly from one moment to the next, anticipating another

problem or anticipating a coming pleasure, you miss the beauty and immediacy of the present, which is constantly enfolding before your eyes. “Meditation teaches you to slow down and take each moment as it comes — the sounds of traffic, the smell of new clothes, the laughter of children, the coming and going of your breath,” explains Bodian. “In fact, as the meditative tradition reminds us, only the present moment exists anyway — the past is just a memory and the future is a fantasy.” Making friends with yourself When you’re constantly trying to live up to expectations (your own or someone else’s) and adapt to an ever-changing, competitive environment, you rarely have the opportunity or the motivation to get to know yourself just the way you are. But when you meditate, you learn to welcome every experience and facet of your being without judgment or denial. You begin to treat yourself as you would a close friend, accepting (and even loving) the whole package. Connecting more deeply with others As you awaken to the present moment and open your heart and mind to your own experience, you naturally extend this quality of awareness and presence to your family and friends. And when you start to accept others the way they are—a skill you can cultivate through the practice of meditation — you open up the channels for a deeper love and intimacy to flow between you. Relaxing the body and calming the mind As contemporary health researchers have discovered — and traditional texts agree — mind and body are inseparable, and an agitated mind inevitably produces a stressed-out body. “As the mind settles, relaxes, and opens during meditation, so does the body — and November - December 2012
the longer you meditate, the more this peace and relaxation ripples out to every area of your life, including your health,” says Bodian. Lightening up! Have you ever thought and worried yourself into an uncontrollable frenzy… or even a meltdown? It’s easy to do: fears feed on one another, problems get magnified exponentially, and the next thing you know, you’re feeling overwhelmed, panicked, and desperate to take a leave of absence from your own life. “The good news is, meditation encourages an inner mental spaciousness in which difficulties and concerns no longer seem so threatening, and constructive solutions can naturally arise,” promises Bodian. “Meditation also fosters a certain detachment that allows for greater objectivity, perspective, and even humor.” Enjoying more happiness Research reveals that the daily practice of meditation for just a few months actually makes people happier, as measured not only by their subjective reports but also by brain-mapping technology. In fact, meditation is apparently one of the only things that can permanently change your emotional set point — your basic level of relative happiness that scientists say stays the same throughout your life, no matter what you experience. Experiencing focus and flow Have you ever been so fully involved in an activity that all sense of self-consciousness, time, and distraction dissolved? If so, you’ve experienced what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls a state of flow. “You might experience a state of flow when you’re creating a work of art, playing a sport, working in the garden, or even making love,” explains Bodian. “Athletes call it being ‘in the zone.’ Through meditation, you can discover how to give the same focused attention to — and 73

even out of ten Americans don’t get enough exercise. Most people who begin a fitness program soon give up on it. Every year millions of Americans commit to work out regularly, only to end up frustrated.
Diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and other serious illnesses are all linked to a lack of exercise, yet few of us find this motivation enough to maintain an ongoing routine. Why? Exercise physiologist, former NCAA swimming champion, and author of Stick with Exercise for a Lifetime: How to Enjoy Every Minute of It!, Robert Hopper, Ph.D., has an answer that might surprise you. “While visions of improved health and fitness can get most of us started on an exercise program, they’re notoriously weak motivators over the long haul. Fun is what really keeps us motivated. The more pleasure we get from a physical activity, the more likely we are to stick to it for a lifetime,” he says, and the research backs him up. Moreover, it turns out he is at the vanguard of a new trend in the exercise world. The current guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine include an alternative to the traditional fitness program, allowing participation in less vigorous activities, roughly comparable to dog walking. Psychologists at the University of Wales found that “The well-being and enjoyment benefits of exercise should be emphasized.” Research investigator Mi
chelle Segar at the University of Michigan says, “Physical activity is an elixir of life,” not “a punishment for bad numbers on the scale.” And if enjoyment is vital, here is the good news: a wider variety of recreational pursuits can now officially be your exercise program. A double reward: enjoyment and the health benefits of exercise. In his book Hopper offers seven steps to enjoying exercise for life-and reaping the health benefits that flow from it. “Health and fitness are not the overt goals of this program, rather they are the natural byproducts of it,” he says. Have fun Hopper guides you to summon your passions in choosing lifetime activities. Use the psych-up and the self-con Win at championship moments. We all know the feeling. You’ve been doing so well and suddenly you’re hit with the temptation to start slacking off on your routine. This is what Hopper calls the “Championship Moment,” a term coined when he was coaching college athletes. He offers four essential strategies for giving your healthy self the edge over that little voice that urges you to hit the couch with a bag of chips. These include the psychup, the self-con, mental toughness, and visualization. * * * Understand the difference between health and fitness. The two are often used interchangeably, but they are not synonymous. Lower blood pressure, reduced stress, a dip in cholesterol, and a reduced risk of serious illness are health benefits that accrue from exercise. You can get them from lowimpact, leisurely activities like bocce ball or even gardening. Fitness benefits such as muscle toning, flexibility, and greater endurance can be gained from more rigorous activities. If you don’t want to climb mountains or run marathons, don’t worry! There’s still plenty that you can do to reap the health benefits of regular activity-while having fun. ∆

Smooth on your shoulders and decolletage. • Make plucking eyebrows easier and less painful. Look for tweezers with a slanted tip -- they’re better at grabbing hairs. • Dab concealer onto your eyelids before you apply shadow to prevent fading and smudging.
• If your red lips fade, use a lip brush to fill them in. Adding another whole coat can make them look gunky. • Get an edgy look by embracing elements that are strong, daring and cool. It could be as easy as adding a swipe of crazy-bright liner or wearing neon lipstick with gunmetal shadow. Just be sure to contrast striking touches with a bit of softness. • Let the bright colors of autumn inspire your look. Leafy metallic eyes hit the right note. ∆
Take time Making exercise a priority means making time for it. Hopper offers a three-phase plan for gradually integrating exercise into your day-to-day life. Supplement your “main dish” activity with a “side dish” fitness program When you reach the intermediate skill level, you may well develop a desire for greater strength and stamina. Weight training or Pilates can give you the physical boost to become a better surfer, skier, dancer, tennis player, etc.

MEDITATION CAN HELP— From Pg. 68 derive the same enjoyment from — every activity.” Feeling more centered, grounded, and balanced For many people, living in an increasingly flat and rapidly-changing world can foster feelings of insecurity and of not having a “place” to call one’s own. To counter these negative mindsets, meditation offers an inner groundedness and balance that external circumstances can’t destroy. Enhancing your performance at work and at play Studies have shown that basic meditation practice alone can enhance your perceptual clarity, creativity, self-actualization, and many of the other factors that contribute to superior performance. Plus, specific meditations have been devised to enhance performance in a variety of activities, ranging from sports to schoolwork.
Aligning with a deeper sense of purpose When you practice making the shift from doing and thinking to being (one way to describe this is fully experiencing the present moment with love and without ego), you’ll discover how to align yourself with a deeper current of meaning and belonging. “For instance, you might get in touch with personal feelings and aspirations that have long remained hidden from your conscious awareness,” suggests Bodian. “If there’s any such thing as a ‘magic bullet’ that can help you survive and even thrive throughout the 21st Century, then meditation is it,” assures Bodian. “If you allow it to become a regular part of your life, it will relieve your stress, disappointment, fear, anger, outrage, and hurt while focusing your energy, making you more effective, and even improving your mental and physical health.”∆

If your grandmother got you a sweater you hate, but she expects you to wear, then that’s probably not an item that you should regift. Suck it up and wear it! But let’s say a former colleague got you a scarf as part of a Secret Santa exchange at work last year. It’s a perfectly nice scarf, but it’s a color that just doesn’t look good on you. That’s a great item to regift. You’ll get it out of your house, and someone else will love having it.” “Other great options are unused gift cards — as long as they haven’t expired

Remember you can give a lot without spending a lot. Stick to your budget and then be generous with your time and spirit. Once the holidays are over, you’ll be happy you didn’t blow your savings, and you and your family and friends will be fulfilled by the time you all spent together.” ∆
LANTERNS — From Pg. 51 exterior, like a garden gate, a garden wall or the wall of a screened porch. Consider styling one with a bit of Halloween ribbon and fall greenery. Keep the lantern up all year and just change the adornment to reflect each new season. Tuck a batteryoperated candle inside and you won’t need to worry about messy wax ruining the lantern or turning it into a raging inferno. Lanterns belong in your artwork displays inside, too. Mix them into your art groupings just like you would any other piece of art. You won’t believe how adding a three-dimensional piece like a lantern will invigorate a montage. Or if you’re all about symmetry, hang a pair of lanterns on either side of a large mirror or piece of artwork. Or center one over a wall bracket or shelf. I also like to hang lanterns from windowsills. And again, battery-operated candles are a must so you don’t create a fire hazard. When you entertain on cool, crisp, jet-black evenings this winter, wow your guests by placing mood lighting on the outside of your windows. It’s so romantic to peer outside and see the twinkle of a
candle in a bright lantern. Looking for a quick but stunning centerpiece for your holiday table this year? Place a row of three or more lanterns down the center of the table. Stop there, or take it one step further by filling in the base of each lantern with a seasonal touch, like acorns for your Thanksgiving table or cranberries for the later holidays. Want the display to be more lush and full? Loosely twist seasonal garland around the lanterns, honeysuckle vine or faux berries for Thanksgiving, and prettier-than-real pine garland for later holidays. When you’re decorating your home for the fall and winter seasons, be sure to include a lantern or two in your displays. Lanterns are perfect on fireplace mantels, especially when they are holding a twinkling battery-operated candle. With all the shapes and sizes of lanterns available today, you’re sure to find one to fit the width of your mantel, even if it’s super-skinny. One of the things I like most about lanterns is that they are like stages -- ready to be dressed up in many ways to reflect your mood or the season. ∆

Today, Cunard operates the youngest ships in the industry, the three “queens of the sea,” Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and its newest, Queen Elizabeth.

Hi Class Living
We recently sailed aboard the Queen Elizabeth on a nine day Mediterranean voyage from London (Southampton) to Rome (Civitavecchia). * * * * The heart of the ship is the Grand Lobby, a triple height soaring atrium with cantilevered balconies, a sweeping staircase, and a stunning art deco chandelier. The lobby’s focal point is a two-story high artwork of wood veneer inlays depicting the original Queen Elizabeth, a perfect background to memorable voyage photos. The lavish décor is reminiscent of the golden age of ocean liners, when leisure cruising was the exclusive domain of royalty and celebrities. When sailing on this impressive ship, you too, can experience the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era. Accommodations for the 2,000+ passengers are in four main categories that also define dining options, amenities, and other privileges: Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess, and Queens. Room sizes vary from 156 SF standard inside cabins to 2,131 SF Grand Suites. We stayed in a 367 SF Princess Suite, a spacious room warmly decorated in soothing beige and taupe colors and appointed with blond wood cabinets. The suite featured a comfortable sitting area, a bathroom with tub, a balcony, a writing desk, and two flat screen TVs. Luxurious amenities included sparkling wine on arrival, daily fruit and bottled water, a pillow menu, and fine toiletries. Life on board alternates between days at sea and exciting port visits. SEA DAYS The Queen Elizabeth is well suited for days at sea offering a range of leisurely pursuits. On sunny days, you can relax on a deck chair or swim in one of the ship’s two pools. If your room is in the Princess or Queens category you have access to a private upper deck where you can luxuriate on an PHOTOS: The Grand Lobby, Pricess Suite, Afternoon Tea, The “Grills” Deck.

oversized cushioned chaise. You can also attend enrichment lectures, enjoy some retail therapy in the duty-free boutiques, try your luck in the casino, take dance classes, bridge lessons, or keep in contact with the outside world in the Computer Center. The ship also features a fully equipped Mac computer room offering classes on popular software programs. If you want to catch up on your reading, head to the library and pick up a book from the thousands of volumes on display. Pamper yourself at the Cunard Royal Spa, or unwind at the bathhouse and enjoy the sauna, steam or whirlpool. If you wish to keep up with your exercise regimen, the well-equipped fitness center has plenty of machines and fitness classes. You’ll also find several lounges, pubs, and cafés, where you can relax with your favorite drink or specialty coffee. Make sure to experience the traditional British style afternoon tea, elegantly served by white-gloved waiters. DINING A unique aspect of the Cunard ships is the separated dining rooms, so guests in higher category rooms can enjoy an upgraded dining experience. Most passengers dine in Britannia, an elegant two-story art deco inspired dining room offering two nightly sittings at pre-assigned tables. Guests in the Princess and Queens state rooms dine in glass-walled upper deck restaurants, Princess Grill and Queens Grill, also called Grills. Seating in the Grills is at assigned tables but at flexible times. Grills passengers access the dining rooms and a private lounge with a special elevator key. The basic menu, similar in all dining rooms, features delicious appetizers, excellent soups, a good selection of main entrees, sinful desserts, and nightly “spa” dishes. The Princess Grill offers additional “a la carte” choices such as Dover sole, lamb chops, and venison, all finished at your table by the maître ‘D. room, the highest category, also serves caviar, lobster Thermidor, and beef Wellington. For a nominal fee you can have a gourmet experience at The Veranda, an elegant restaurant featuring a contemporary interpretation of French cuisine. A popular dining venue is the Lido Restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night buffets. At dinner, a section of the Lido is transformed into different restaurants alternating between Indian, Argentinian, and Asian cuisines. NIGHTLIFE After dark, in line with Cunard’s tradition of elegance and decorum, guests are asked to adhere to a daily dress code: “elegant casual,” “semi formal,” and “formal.” Even the “elegant casual” means wearing a jacket without tie, and no jeans. The dress code adds an aura of luxury and festivity to evenings on board. Before or after dinner, you can enjoy entertainment throughout the ship. Stop by the Golden Lion Pub, a British style pub where a pianist entertains and leads sing-alongs, and the entertainment staff organizes karaoke and trivia games. In other venues you can listen to a quiet string quartet, a classical pianist, or sway to the lively beat of a Caribbean band. If you like ballroom dancing, you will appreciate the elegant Queens Room, the ship’s two-story ballroom, appointed with crystal chandeliers and a 1,000 SF inlaid wood dance floor. Dance the night away to live music by a big band, onboard musicians, or DJ. On formal nights the Queens Room is home to official balls, with dance competitions and special programs. If you prefer disco, the Yacht Club on the upper deck pulsates late into the night. For a different style of entertainment head to the elegant Royal Court Theater for nightly shows ranging from West End style productions to specialty acts. also offers private viewing boxes where you can enjoy a romantic evening with cocktails, petit fours and a bottle of Veuve Clicot champagne. PORTS OF CALL The easiest way to explore a port of call is with one of the numerous shore excursions offered on board. We visited the following ports: Gibraltar, a British outpost in the Mediterranean, is popular for its Rock Nature Reserve and its famous apes, Moorish Castle, St. Michael Caves, and duty free shops. Palma de Mallorca is a busy port in the Spanish island Mallorca, famous for its majestic Cathedral, Majorca pearls, beaches, and a verdant countryside where Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones keep a residence. Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city known for Gaudi’s architecture and his Sagrada Famillia, Miro and Picasso Museums, the Old City and Las Ramblas pedestrian boulevard. Monte Carlo is the home of the Prince’s Palace, the Grand Casino, an Oceanographic Museum, and beautiful Botanical Gardens. From Monte Carlo you can also visit Nice, Eze, and Cannes in the French Riviera. Livorno, Italy is the gateway to Pisa and its leaning tower, and to Florence. Florence’s top attractions include the statue of David, the Uffizi Gallery Museum, and the Duomo. Also visit Medici Museum and its Renaissance rooms with stunningly decorated ceilings. The last port of call is Civitavecchia, an hour’s drive from the magical city of Rome. (See article on pg. 82) The Queen Elizabeth experience can be summarized in just a few words: grandeur, elegance, excellent cuisine, and superior service. Behind an unassuming peach colored façade hides an upscale boutique hotel, with a soothing atmosphere and refined service. HOW TO BRING JOY— From Pg. 60 Stay in the moment Think about the vast amount of time you spend dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. You may realize that you spend very little time actually existing in the present moment! This is very unhealthy. In fact, it is the source of virtually all anxiety and depression. Your energy is far more powerful when it is there with you as much as possible.” At holiday parties and events, it is especially important to stay in the moment. (A.k.a. “Acting as if.”) Every morning when you wake up, the ball is in your court in regards to how you want to spend your day. If you exude bitterness, anger, or self-pity, then you can’t really expect others around you to feed you good cheer by the spoonful. Remember the law of the universe: Like attracts like. This is a very valuable lesson that is easy to apply to the holidays, says Apollon. Even if you don’t necessarily feel charitable or joyful, put a smile on your face and intend to feel 86

When you take the time to look your best you will feel your best.
Take care of yourself. You’ll look and feel better Make sure that you get enough sleep to survive all the events that will be coming your way this time of year, advises Apollon. Eat well so your body will stay strong. Avoid the urge to overeat at parties — you will just feel sluggish and cranky afterward. Spend some time each day alone and quiet to help you regain your inner balance. And try to find time to exercise each day, even if it is just a ten-minute walk or some gentle stretching in the mornings. And a flattering new holiday outfit wouldn’t hurt, either.
Manage your expectations Remember that the holidays almost never turn out like a Norman Rockwell painting or a sepia-toned greeting card. It is important that you accept that the holidays probably won’t go off without a hitch. Still, this time of the year can be great if you seek out loving feelings toward your friends and families. Happiness can come only from embracing unconditional love as often as possible. If you work toward finding the love in every situation, you will be delighted to find how much joy the holidays really can hold. ∆
