overworking has become the new normal. Work is no longer a place but a state of mind. There is no longer an addiction to work — it’s just a passion for what you do. We have befriended busyness. November - December 2013
Ray Williams, president of Ray Williams Associates — a Vancouver company that provides leadership training — explains: “A 14
An Unhealthy on With Work
Chuck Norris
USA Today survey found that in each consecutive year since 1987, people reported being busier than the previous year, with 69 percent
responding that they were either ‘busy’ or ‘very busy,’ and only 8 percent saying they were ‘not very busy.’ Not surprisingly, women
15

reported being busier than men, and those between ages 30 to 60 were the busiest. “When the respondents were asked what they were sacrificing, 56 percent cited sleep, 52 percent recreation, 51 percent hobbies, 44 percent friends and 30 percent family. The respondents also reported that, in 1987, 50 percent ate at least one family meal a day; by now, that fell to under 20 percent.” Take a good look again at what we’re sacrificing: sleep, recreation, hobbies, friends and family. And don’t we think those will take a toll on the quality, vitality and longevity of our own lives? In an article Williams wrote for Psychology Today, “Workaholism and the Myth of Hard Work,” he argued how a “contributing factor to the problem of workaholism is the prevailing belief in hard work as the route to success, particularly wealth ... .” But the key is working wisely around your daily optimal energy, balancing your life and living by healthy priorities. How long will it take us to learn busyness is not always equated with productivity? Williams cites Sara Robinson, in her insightful article on Salon.com “Bring Back the 40-hour Work Week,” in which she says, “150 years of research proves that long hours at work will kill profits, productivity and employees.” Williams summarizes Robinson by noting that “research shows knowledge workers actually have fewer good hours in a day than physical workers — about six. U.S. military research has shown that losing just one hour of sleep a night for a week will cause a level of cognitive degradation equivalent to a 0.10 blood alcohol level. And most ‘typically have no idea of just how impaired they are.’” The same is true for over-workers. Of course, this couldn’t possibly relate to you or me, right? Here are 10 questions adapted from the “Twenty Questions” of Workaholics Anonymous — an international group based upon the 12-steps that aid the recovery of workaholics and those who November - December 2013
love them — to help discover if you or a loved one are a workaholic or are prone to its patterns and captivity. If the answer to most of these questions is in the affirmative, consider yourself or them a card-carrying member of the compulsive overworking club: • Do you get more excited about work than about family or anything else? • Do you work more than 40 hours a week? (Or reply, “Everyone I know does!”?) • Do you believe that it is OK to work long hours if you love what you are doing? • Are you afraid that if you don’t work hard you will lose your job or be a failure? • Do you get impatient with (or look down upon) people who have other priorities besides work or get irritated when people ask you to stop doing your work in order to do something else? • Have your long hours hurt your family or other relationships? • Do you have a difficult time delegating or truly trusting others with work duties? • Do you think about work while driving, falling asleep or others are talking? • Do you take work with you to meals? Bed? On weekends? On vacation? • Do you believe that more money will solve the other problems in your life? And I would add: • Do you think rest is overrated? An inhibitor to your productivity? • Does being unplugged from social media and the digital world feel like torture. Is temporarily cutting off your cellphone, computer or social media like cutting your carotid artery? • Do you believe there is no way you could be a workaholic or have an abnormal preoccupation with work? I heard a line once: “If the devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy.” The outcome is all the same: personal deterioration, relational distancing, productive dilapidation and even moral degradation. For the record, I believe we can be amazingly productive workers, but I 33 16

Caffeinated Everything By Chuck Norris
I
n a tired and restless world, “energy” is the name of the game, and the beverage and food industry agrees. First, it was the proliferation of energy drinks, and then came energy shots, but now it has advanced to include popular foods, snacks and even medicine and toiletries. For example, Alert energy gum is the name of the new
chewing product by Wrigley, and it packs a caffeine punch that promises, “The Right Energy, Right Now.” According to
Wrigley’s website, what that means is: “One piece of Alert Energy contains about as much caffeine (40mg) as 1/2 cup of
coffee.” And with eight pieces in every pack, a consumer can

carry the equivalent of four cups of coffee in his or her pocket! And gum is just one item in a long list of products that include the bitter white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant we call caffeine. Candy, nuts and other snack foods (including cookies and yogurt) are also among those that manufacturers have added caffeine to in recent years. What’s next? Caffeinated toothpaste? Too late. It already exists. One is called — what else? — Buzz, a peppermint-flavored breath freshener that promises to pack the same punch “as a cup of Starbucks coffee or a can of Mountain Dew.” Of course, we already knew that caffeine is present in soft drinks, some over-the-counter diet pills (popular among youths), cold medications and pain relievers. And if that’s not enough, we now have Wired Waffles (with 200 milligrams of caffeine each), Arma potato chips (with 70 milligrams of caffeine per 2-ounce bag) and PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay reinvention Cracker Jack’D (70 milligrams of caffeine in a 2-ounce bag), or you can go right for the jugular (or the lungs) by breathing in an AeroShot caffeine inhaler, which delivers “airborne energy” from fine powder in a lipstick-sized canister (100 milligrams of caffeine). And let’s not forget that more and more adolescents and young adults are living on a steady stream of 5-hour Energy shots (208 milligrams of caffeine) and “sodas” such as Full Throttle (200 mg), Monster Energy Drink (160 mg), Rockstar (160 mg), original Amp (140 mg) and Red Bull (80 mg). Though some caffeinated products, including Alert energy gum, warn they are “not recommended for children,” consumer advocates are wondering how kids can possibly refrain from them when they appear among other brands in some of the brightest, most appealing packaging. Additionally, savvy social media marketing techniques often are used in the launches of these products, and the targets of those are also the younger generations. November - December 2013
(You can check the caffeine levels of more than 100 of the most popular foods and beverages on the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s website, at www. cspinet.org/new/cafchart.htm.) The FDA is investigating the health risks of energy drinks and energy shots. Last November, the FDA said it had received 92 reports over four years that cited illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths after consumption of an energy shot marketed as 5-Hour Energy. The FDA said it had also received reports that cited the highly caffeinated Monster Energy Drink in several deaths.” Despite the fact that health science has shown that coffee packs some great antioxidants and that caffeine in moderation has some limited benefits for healthy adults, excessive amounts of the synthetic stimulant can become hazardous to anyone, particularly children. The World Health Organization recognizes caffeine intoxication as a medical condition. Symptoms include nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, tremors and rapid heartbeat. In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics admonished that children and teenagers should never use caffeine, because the stimulant increases blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety, impairs sleep and hydration, and could negatively affect a child’s developing cardiovascular and neurological systems. And let’s not forget that caffeine is defined as a “mildly addictive drug” by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and a “psychoactive drug” by other experts. So if you’re looking for a quick and sustained energy for an afternoon low or a pre-workout buzz, have a healthy energy-enhancing alternative. Drink water to hydrate and rehydrate, and look to natural foods to offer energy. Eating an orange or banana (or any other potassium-rich fruit or vegetable), or munching on a handful of peanuts will give you a surge of sustained energy to carry you through the day. ∆

Grow Your Retir
W
hether you’re concerned about your retirement savings or you’re behind and need to catch up, these steps will help you re-focus.
Take a Fresh Look At Where You Stand To determine how close you are to your retirement goals, first tally your assets (what you own) and your liabilities (what you owe) to come up with a net worth statement. Here’s how: • Make a list of your assets: bank accounts, home equity, the current value of investment accounts (including retirement accounts), business interests, cars and other personal property, and the accumulated value of insurance policies. • List your total liabilities: what you owe on your home, credit card balances, November - December 2013
car payments and any other loans. • Subtract your liabilities from your assets to come up with your personal net worth statement. It can be as simple as doing the math with pencil and paper. Or use an Excel spreadsheet that you can easily update. Whatever the method, having a realistic idea of your net worth can be your reference point as you take the following steps. Create a Budget and Stick With It Take a hard look at what you earn and what you spend. If you’ve let your budget lapse, bring it back into focus by following
22

this simple formula: • Divide your expenses into two categories, nondiscretionary (the must haves) and discretionary (the extras). Put debt reduction and savings at the top of your nondiscretionary expense list. • Track your spending for 30 days, comparing your projected expenses with what you actually spend. With this detailed spending picture, it will be easier to find ways to cut back. Start by focusing on discretionary items such as eating out and entertainment. Try negotiating cable and phone costs or your credit card rates. These small economies can add up quickly.
Get Out of Debt Non-deductible consumer debt such as credit card balances can really hinder your ability to save. Try to eliminate any credit card balances as quickly as you can. As a first step, you might look into consolidating balances on cards and other loans into a lower-cost, potentially tax-deductible form of debt such as a home equity line of credit. Keep Your Emergency Fund Alive And Well Generally speaking, it’s good to have three months’ expenses handy in case of emergency. Today it might be wise 44

Financi For Same-S
R
ecent Supreme Court ruling has opened the door for same-sex married couples to enjoy federal benefits. Many of these benefits are financial, making it easier to save and plan for the future. Of course, there are still a lot of issues to be clarified, but there are a number of things you can do right away to make the most of your new benefits. Decide how to file income taxes In the past, you may have filed your state income tax return as married but had to file separate federal income tax returns. Now things are simpler. As long as your state recognizes same-sex marriage, you can also choose between filing a joint or separate federal income tax return. This doesn’t mean that your combined tax bill will necessarily go down; in fact, it may go up — especially if you both earn a substantial and similar amount of money. I’d have your accountant run both scenarios to see which is best. Also, run the numbers for the years since you got married. The federal government generally allows you to amend your tax returns for the three prior years. If filing jointly works in your favor, it may be possible for you to amend your past returns and get a refund. The government hasn’t yet made a definitive statement on this, but why not be prepared? Review health insurance options You can now be included on your spouse’s health insurance plan tax-free. Previously, same-sex married couples were treated as unmarried and had to pay income taxes

on insurance benefits for the spouse. Not anymore. If you’re both working, check with each of your company’s HR or benefits department to see which option would give you the best coverage at the lowest cost. This is potentially a huge saving. Another plus is that you’re also now entitled to family medical leave to care for a sick spouse or other family member. Check beneficiary designations Under the new ruling, your spouse is now the automatic sole beneficiary of your retirement assets and must consent in writing to waive this benefit. If you’ve made other beneficiary designations on your employer retirement plan, contact your benefits department to update your beneficiary forms. While you’re at it, double-check the beneficiaries on any IRAs or insurance policies. These things can easily be forgotten, so use this opportunity to bring everything up to date. Consider Social Security benefits Another big plus is that you’re now able to collect spousal and survivor Social Security benefits. The spousal benefit allows you to collect a Social Security benefit based either on your own work record, or up to 50 percent of your spouse’s benefit, whichever is greater. A surviving spouse can collect up to 100 percent of a deceased spouse’s benefit. Even some divorced spouses are eligible for some of an exspouse’s benefits. While this may seem far in the future depending on your age, deciding when to file for Social Security merits careful consideration. There are a number of strategies spouses can use to maximize their combined benefit. Also, knowing that you can each potentially collect on the other’s earnings record may factor in to any decisions about the financial viability of one or the other of November - December 2013
you deciding not to work — for instance, to care for children. Update your estate plan Some of the most significant benefits have to do with gift and estate taxes. Your gifts to each other won’t be subject to gift tax. You can also leave an unlimited amount of money to your spouse without paying any estate tax. Also, if you inherit an IRA from your spouse, you can basically treat it as your own and postpone taking required minimum distributions until the year you turn 701/2. This can potentially allow your assets to continue to grow tax-deferred until they are withdrawn. These provisions may give you peace of mind that your spouse will be covered if something should happen to you, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to put basic protections in place. So be certain that each of you have a will, a durable power of attorney for financial decisions and an advance healthcare directive. Rethink your life insurance In the past, some same-sex spouses have used life insurance to protect each other financially. But now, with the ability to gift and bequeath unlimited amounts of money to each other tax-free, you may no longer need as much. It’s worth reviewing your policies. Talk to an advisor From retirement planning, to estate planning, to filing taxes, to a myriad of employment, military and veteran’s benefits, marriage changes things — for everybody. For same-sex couples, there’s even more to think about, especially for couples that live in states that don’t recognize samesex marriage. My advice is to consult an accountant or financial planner who is familiar with financial issues for same-sex couples. It’s best to do everything you can to take full advantage of what’s now available to you — without taking anything for granted. ∆

ivorce can be terribly lonely, especially in the beginning, and especially for men who often internalize personal stuff.
So why does it feel so lonely? “Well, we’re not really the kinds of guys who say to our golf buddies on the second tee, ‘Hey, can I vent about my divorce for a minute?’ or, ‘Guys, I need a hug.’ No. The problem is a personal one, and so are the solutions,” says E.B.Gunn, author of the recent books The Gentleman’s Guide to the Nasty Divorce and The Gentleman’s Guide to Cooking Through a Child Custody Battle. So what can you do to shore yourself up and know that you’re not alone, and that you’re going to be OK? Go back to the basics. Here are Gunn’s tips for guys who are divorcing. Find in yourself the person you were before you married If you used to like to go fishing, find your old fishing buddies (the ones she couldn’t stand because they ‘took you away from her’) and go fishing. If you used to like playing softball, do some stretches, pull out the mitt and find a team. If you liked to paint landscapes, find an art class and get yourself

an easel. You’ll gain strength because you’ll become your old self around people with interests similar to yours. Get a tune up Drag your tail into the gym or strap on the running shoes and kick-start the exercise regime. Eat better. It will help bring back the vigor you need to confront your new circumstances. Plus you’ll look and feel better — and that gives you confidence which inevitably draws others to you. Find your community If you used to go to church, or to your synagogue or mosque, but life ‘pulled you away,’ go back and get involved. You’ll feel that sense of belonging that’s important at this time, not to mention you’re reviving your spiritual life, which will shore you up from inside. Find a special common interest with your children If your son loves baseball, take him to games and start following interesting players together. If your daughter loves clothes, develop an interest in costumes you can share with her, and take her on field trips to museums and shows. If you don’t have children, take your niece or nephew. Kids see the new and wonderful in things you may miss — and their joy and curiosity is contagious. Catch it! Create new traditions Take the kids to a fun theme park and plan to make it an annual gig. Take your kids or friends to a local dive restaurant known for amazing pancakes — and plan for regular visits. Go camping with your kids or friends and bring along an unexpected treat to make it even more special. Turn it into a tradition you share with your kids or pals. Everyone loves looking forward to fun planned events, no matter how small. Become that fun guy you used to be Want to feel some real love? Go ahead, November - December 2013
get the Santa suit, tuck the pillow into the front and surprise the kids at that Christmas party you were dreading. Or live a little, pull out the grill and offer to cook hamburgers and hot dogs at the school field day or for the veterans after the local parade. Or, take a cooking class. If the custody of your children is at issue, you’ll want to make the chow at your house as tasty as it can be. If custody’s not at issue, you’ll be more fun in the kitchen for your friends and new companions. Pull out the old drum set So you were a garage bander — you even had some buddies who thought you were good. Who cares what your soon-to-be ex thought. She’s history. You’re you, and you’re back. You’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll find some guys — or gals (probably who’ve gone through divorces themselves) who want to join your band. Make some extra money We all know divorce is expensive. Work harder at your day job, and for a new night job, follow a passion of yours. If you love cars and you’re handy with them, fix up a ’56 Chevy and sell it well. If silver’s your thing, study the values and then comb the junk stores. Shine up the bargains you find and sell them well on eBay or at the local flea market. Value is created when a sharp eye and elbow grease get together. Look up an old friend Wives and marriages have a way of closing guys off from some of their old pals. Check a couple of those doors and see which one or two swing open easily. Tip your hat to your competitive side Exercise moderation here, but this can be fun and liberating. If the ex always demanded to decorate every corner of the house, do a good job decorating a room or two at your new place. Consult professionals, but you be the general who calls the shots your own way. If the ex always handled all the travel arrangements, book

R E D yourself a trip and dig into the details. If she was the party-planner, throw yourself a first-class party. Nothing tastes sweeter than the forbidden fruit. Other than this one self-indulgence, don’t think about her. When you look back, look back to before the marriage. But don’t look back. Look forward. The best is yet to be. ∆ OVERCOMING — From Pg. 16 don’t believe we need to forfeit our health, family and personal life in the process. ou may not be able to buy everything on your wish list, but you can still give your wardrobe a style lift by doing a few simple things.
Sometimes it helps just to get a new perspective on what you already have in your closet and think about new ways to put it all together. Check out these ideas to make small changes with big impact:
of tone-on-tone is a sophisticated way to style those classic separates. Try a soothing mix of blues and pair darker cobalt shades with last season’s emerald greens and turquoises.
Start with one major purchase This season, a leather jacket will give you an instant signature style statement. Go for a colorful tailored blazer for a work-toweekend look. Team it with a pencil skirt for a professional spin or a pair of jeans for casual days.
Tweak with texture A great way to get the most out of your favorite clothes — just combine different fabrics to make a more interesting look. Think chiffon skirts with chunky wooly sweaters, lace dresses with cotton trench coats, satiny pajama pants with leather blazers and tweed coats with cuffed jeans.
Layer up This is an easy way to style those older tops and bottoms hanging in your closet. With just one or two new tanks or camisoles, you can give basic pieces a new life. Don’t be afraid to inject some color into the mix. The monochromatic look
Play with structure The message this season is loose and looser. Roomy oversized coats and fuller skirts are swinging into view. Combine these new silhouettes with more tailored jackets and trousers, and you’ll be able to make a dramatic statement that 44 Fashion by Michael Kors.

The fisherman’s cable sweater One of this season’s most popular silhouettes, this basic has been slouching around the style docks for years. The classic look slims up and looks great in solid colors as well as graphic prints — pairs perfectly with jeans. The colorblocked sweater Another one of the season’s trends, colorblocking takes off in knitwear this fall in a mix of abstract geometric prints and bold stripes. This is definitely a statementmaking sweater that you can wear out on the town. Instead of denim, pair this knockout knit with leather leggings. The cropped sweater While many of us like the longer

he fall season is underway but many guys are still looking for fashionable items to add to their wardrobes. Here is a roundup of the items to put on your checklist as suggested by menswear consultants at the Doneger Group. The crewneck sweatshirt There is an emerging athletic influence into leisure dressing, and as a result, the crewneck sweatshirt looks great with items like premium or designer denim or five-pocket rich colored corduroys. Look for sweatshirts that are pieced fabrics or detailed with knit wristbands or neck collars. Cardigan sweaters The alternatives to casual sport coats. Wear the cardigan with patterned shirts, accessorized with a knit tie or bow tie. Take note that some cardigans are designed with shawl collars or with full lapels. The printed shirt A great visual focus for a traditional guy who might like a button-down sport shirt is to wear it with a quilted vest and khaki pants, or for a modern guy who might like a paisley print dress shirt with a dark slim suit and no tie. The work shirt/shirt jacket A weekend outerwear option that works well with a chambray, flannel or plaid shirt is to wear it with denim or cords. The jacket should be around 30 to 32 in length.

Some cords are mixed with stretch fabric for comfort and wearability. Wool Trousers Dress pants that range from Super 100 performance wools to wool blends for small checks, tweeds and herringbone patterns. Dress up the trousers with a shirt and tie or a lean looking turtleneck. Modern-fit jeans Time for men to go modern in jean silhouettes. Look for slim or straight over boot cut or relaxed fit. Try the Japanese denim (darker, heavier) with selvage or the red interior stitching that allows one to cuff the jean and show the hem. The biker jacket Classic and cool ala James Dean, or edgy and rock cool like Adam Levine. The jacket can be all leather or pieced leather. It can be cropped and asymmetric in cut or blouson. Wear your Biker jacket with a long-sleeve, v-neck t-shirt and black jeans. The classic jacket is still zipper front and adorned with quilting, seaming and banded collar.

Urban Boots From the ankle boot to the Chelsea boot, from the biker boot to the rugged country style, the options are endless for men. Add a pair of boots to the mix of wing tips, canvas lace-ups, driving shoes, sneakers and leather loafers. Boots are now a year-round fashion must-have. ∆ 40
COZY CHIC — From Pg. 37 tunic-length sweaters (more cover-up insurance), shorter, cropped sweaters are showing up to give us girls even more choices. These shapely sweaters are divine in fuzzy knits like mohair and set the style scene for a little retro influence, 1950s style. They’re also great to dress up trousers or skirts to wear to work.
Fine Italian Menswear

The turtleneck sweater Another retro favorite, the turtleneck is always a sign that fall has arrived. A giant cowl neck gives it even more oomph! It’s great on its own or layered under coats and jackets. The cardigan sweater No longer just part of a “twin” set, the cardigan goes to longer lengths to stand out in the classics crowd. It can easily take the place of a jacket to wear to work layered over T-shirts and tanks. This is also a great way to experiment with adding color to your wardrobe. The sweater coat A knit coat is just the ticket and a stylish alternative to a heavy-duty parka. The sweater coats this year are sophisticated in dark marled grays and heathers or playful in marbleized black and white prints.

The comfort of a knit combined with the one-stop ease of an A-line dress. Try this combo in a bold color sand top off with an even bolder scarf double wrapped around your neck. Tres chic. ∆

hen it comes to giving money to your family, even the most generous intentions carry the potential for misunderstanding or even resentment.
So consider the “how” as well as the “what” before you finalize your plans.
grandchild. That way you know the money will be used solely for their education.
Be clear about your intention Are you giving the money to your kids or your grandkids? That’s important. If you want to give money to your kids, an equal amount to each sibling would probably be the fairest. (You can currently give up to $14,000 a year to any number of individuals without incurring a gift tax. A couple sharing gifts can give up to $28,000.) The problem with this approach is that even though you can explain that the money is intended for your grandchildren’s education, you lose control. This approach also has some sticky issues because of the difference in family size and marital status. Therefore, if your genuine desire is to help pay for your grandchildren’s college tuition, it probably makes more sense to set up a specified college account for each
Decide how much to give Ideally, it would be good to give an equal amount to each grandchild. If the kids are relatively the same age, that should be fair. Each account would have about the same time to grow. However, if, for instance, your son’s children are considerably older, you could give a proportionately larger amount to them since they’ll need it sooner.
November - December 2013
Talk Frankly With Your Family The most important thing here is to talk openly with all of your children — both married and unmarried — about your goal. Let them know that you want to help provide a college education for all of your grandchildren. Discuss the best type of account to open. For instance, a 529 Savings Plan, which is controlled by you and has certain tax advantages when used for qualified education expenses, is

one option. (Note that you can front-load a 529 Plan with five years’ of contributions without incurring gift tax. You can also avoid the gift tax by paying the tuition directly to a school.) Another choice is a custodial account, which would give you or a specified trustee control of the money and how it’s invested until the child reaches the age of majority. Be aware, though, that money in a custodial account becomes the property of the child at 18 or 21, depending on the state, and doesn’t have to be used for educational purposes. Regardless of the account type, specify the amount of money you’re providing for each grandchild now — and be sure to emphasize that you will give a comparable amount to each future grandchild should your family grow. STYLE STATEMENTS — From Pg. 34 doesn’t overwhelm you. Mix prints and patterns This can be tricky but don’t give up so easily. Look at the printed pieces in your closet and match them up by similar colors. You never know what combination might just give you that up-to-the-minute look for fall/winter 2013. Add some animal prints By now animal prints are a fashion GROW YOUR RETIREMENT— From Pg. 23 to raise that amount. If you lose your job, you don’t want to have to dip into your retirement accounts to keep going. Because of taxes and penalties, withdrawing money early from a retirement account is expensive. Having an emergency fund makes sense not only to cover the unexpected, but also to help preserve your hard-earned retirement savings. Save, Save, Save There’s no way around it — to enjoy any kind of retirement, you need to save as much as you can. Here are some ideas: • Keep contributing to your 401(k) at November - December 2013
And last but not least, think about what would be fair and equitable if your youngest doesn’t have children. Perhaps you could suggest that, in this instance, you’d contribute an equivalent amount to a business venture or some other type of educational opportunity, or add a clause to your will that would even out the inheritances in another way. The bottom line is that there’s no right or wrong way to go about this. But there are several ways to be fair, and that depends a lot on you and your family. So many families shy away from talking about money. Your ability and desire to help fund your grandkids education is a great opportunity for all of you to share not only the wealth, but a mutual understanding of what you’re giving and why. ∆
staple. One or two exotic print on a jacket, coat, handbag or shoes can go a long way in making a style statement that adds big impact instantly. Go for heavy metal Glam it up with metallics. Make your wardrobe shine with statement cuff bracelets, link necklaces, gleaming handbags and shoes. Mix your metals — gold with silver with pewter for even more of an interesting style statement. ∆ least up to the company match. If you’re 50 or older, you can make a catch-up contribution. • If you don’t have a 401(k) or similar plan, contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA, and make catch-up contributions if you’re eligible. • When you get a raise, save it in a personal taxable account or increase the percentage you put in your 401(k). • Put all or part of an annual bonus toward your retirement. • Invest your tax refund in your IRA. Even in volatile times, retirement accounts offer the benefit of tax-deferred
44
compounding. This gives you greater growth potential in the long run. If you’re uncomfortable in the stock market, put new money into more conservative vehicles such as CDs or a savings account. Rethink Your Retirement Options Now’s the time to think creatively about the way you might retire. For instance, you could: • Spend less in retirement. Ideally, you should plan for as much income in retirement as you have now, but you might get by on less if you’ve paid off your mortgage and eliminated debt. • Postpone retirement. You’ll have more time to build your savings. You can also increase your potential Social Security benefit by waiting to receive payments (up to age 70). • Work part-time. This could mean extra income as well as a way to keep active and involved. • Tap into your home equity. If you own your home and you’re 62 or older, a reverse mortgage may be an option (although watch out for fees and other requirements). Or downsize, and add the difference to your retirement nest egg. 85

vital, especially as you age, you must stimulate your brain with challenging activities that make you think both inside and outside the box. Crossword puzzles and sudoku fit the bill. So does studying ancient Greek. Play bridge, join a book club or take a course in bicycle repair. When you stop learning, your brain goes to sleep, and next thing you know, you’re dead. RELISH REAL FOOD Aren’t you fed up with diets, pills and stupid supplements that promise quick weight loss and deliver nothing but disappointment? Here’s the gift in a nutshell: stop trying to fool Mother Nature. She hates fake foods, processed foods, foods with additives and pesticides and artificial sweeteners. Your job is to read labels and resist buying anything with ingredients you can’t pronounce. There is plenty of delicious, real food out there nowadays. Find it, cook it, eat appropriate amounts of it, and support the conscious people who grow it. INGREDIENTS — From Pg. 52 going down your table’s center, or you could mix them with little vases. Interesting Chargers to Set the Stage The key to creating place settings that “wow” is to build them up from the bottom, layer by beautiful layer. It sounds complicated, but it’s super-simple to do. Start with a charger to ground the pyramid of dishes. Pick three different kinds of chargers so you can achieve a variety of looks on your table, depending upon which dishes and linens you use with them. Opt for chargers that are simple in design so they go with just about anything. Linens to Add Luxury to the Table Don’t scrimp on napkins. Don’t use paper napkins because cloth napkins do so much to make a table feel more luxurious and layered. Different sets of napkins November - December 2013
THINK IT, DO IT, BE IT This is a gift certificate for better mental health. Negative thinking — I’m too fat, I can’t dance — depresses your system and gets in the way of positive change. As do anger and intolerance. You can learn to suspend judgment and live your life with kindness and compassion. That’s why yoga was invented. Meditate on that, not your flabby thighs, and awaken to your body’s natural desire to be alert, alive and Pepsi-free. EMBRACE FREEDOM This may be your greatest gift of all. We fight for it, we die for it, but how do we define it? In his book “Power, Freedom and Grace” Deepak Chopra says: “You know you are free when you feel happy and at ease instead of fearful and anxious... when you are independent of the good and bad opinion of others... when you have relinquished the need to seek approval... when you believe that you are good enough as you are.” ∆
offer the opportunity to take your table in a completely different direction. I also like to use 53-inch-square table cloths turned on the diagonal at the center of my rectangular dining table. Pick a pattern that complements your napkins and dishes. Another favorite? Bright place mats! Versatile White Dishes Save the Day Pick plain white dishes because they work with absolutely every color, style and season. If you want a bright, clean look on your table, stick with white dishes and use table linens and a floral centerpiece to bring in pops of color. Or mix the white dishes in with other dish patterns. Top a white dinner plate with a majolica salad plate shaped like a leaf. Or sandwich a white salad plate between a blue-and-white transferware dinner plate and bread plate.

Flatware Finishes a Place Setting in Style Once you decide on the direction you want to go with your table, flatware can play a major role in helping you get there. Are you pulling together a formal occasion in a flash? Reach for the tried-and-true silver or silver plate. You can’t beat it for sophistication. If your table is going to be awash with color, pick flatware that joins in the fun. ∆

If you have collected woody stems, snip up into the bottom of the stem and smash with a hammer to encourage drinking. If you have collected hollow stems that release a milky substance when they’re cut, seal the nutrients into the stem by placing the tip in boiling water or over a candle flame for 10 seconds. Set your bucket in a cool, shady place overnight. This allows stems to fully hydrate and rest, which will give them a longer vase life.

Goblets Take Dinner Drinks to the Next Level “Presentation over preparation” is my mantra when it comes to entertaining. You can serve guests chilled tap water and it will seem luxurious if you put it in lovely glass goblets. If you’re limited on storage and can only fit one set of glassware in your cabinet, go with clear glass. It goes with everything and looks so elegant. If you have space for one more set, pick a color that mixes well with your dishes. Don’t have a set big enough for all your guests? Use different patterns for the sides and the ends of the table.

Area Rugs A
H
ardwood floors are great, the great expanses of wood, the Area rugs don’t just lie around on the floor, they are decorating essentials that enable you to finish a room with finesse, elevating it to a new level of style. Here are five ways you can put area rugs to work to add to your home’s ambiance — and recommendations for their care. Ground Furniture Groupings Area rugs provide a stage for furnishings, giving them a visual home in a room. I think placing an area rug under a dining table is a must because it reinforces the table’s position as the focal point of the room and keeps it from feeling like it’s floating in the space. Rugs also protect the floor from the wear and tear of sliding dining chairs. If your living-room furniture is arranged in the center of the room, not against the walls, put a rug under the grouping to visually bring it together so the pieces don’t feel like they are spinning out in space. When determining the size of your area rug, you can size the rug so that it pretty much covers the entire floor, leaving a foot between the rug and the wall so some of the floor shows. Or pick a size that just contains your furniture grouping. Some decorators believe all the legs of your furniture should be on the rug. Others say all the legs should be off the rug. I’m a fan

of putting just the front legs of the furniture on the rug, leaving the back off. This happy-medium approach leaves plenty of your hardwood floor exposed but gives furniture something to grip onto so it doesn’t slip and slide when you sit down. Bring Color and Pattern to a Space Do you want your area rug to be a vibrant focal point in your room -- or a lessshowy member of the supporting cast? If your furnishings are neutral, you can pick a rug with lots of color and pattern. There are so many amazing patterns out there that you are going to have a blast picking one that brings your room to life. There is nothing to equal a handmade rug, whether it’s new, antique or vintage. But these classics have gotten very expensive. Flat-weave rugs will give you all the visual wow at a fraction of the price. While a fine handmade rug will last you a lifetime, you can expect to get about 10 to 12 years out of a flat-weave rug. Because you aren’t marrying the rug for life, you have a little more freedom to pick something trendy. By the time you are tired of it, it will have reached the end of its lifespan. If you want a rug that will give you lots and lots of interesting texture and a touch of subtle color, but not fight with your furnishings for attention, get a natural-fiber rug, like a sisal or jute. These unassuming weaves are not trying to be anything other than what they are: a relaxed, low-maintenance floor covering that will wear like iron. Yet, somehow they look fabulous in about every style of home, from traditional to contemporary. If you have a large floor to cover, natural-fiber rugs are a great option because they are affordable and can be custom ordered to fit your space perfectly. Warm up Cold Floors with Area Rugs When you pop out of bed on cold winter mornings, you want your toes to hit a warm rug, not the freezing hardwood floor. Consider area rugs an essential for any room where you go barefoot, like your November - December 2013
living room or family room. They are also great at providing sound absorption in noisy rooms, like the kids’ playroom. Add Interest to a Room Cover the majority of the space with a big natural-fiber rug. Then, layer a smaller Persian or flat-weave rug on top. With their contrast in size, color and texture, the layered rugs really add visual interest in a room. Plus, this little trick will allow you to save valuable decorating dollars. Covering the majority of the floor with a sisal or jute rug is dramatically less expensive than covering the same space with a handmade wool rug. When you purchase the rug that will layer on top of the natural-fiber rug, you can get a much smaller size than you would if the rug was standing alone. For the top rug, I suggest one just big enough to fit inside the perimeter of your furniture grouping. You can also turn the top rug on the diagonal so it looks larger, giving you still more bang for the buck. Define Spaces in a Large Room If you have a larger room that you want to visually break down into several smaller sections, area rugs will help you do the trick. Split a long living room into three separate spaces using area rugs to ground and define each spot. Bring in different colors and patterns to give each grouping its own feel. Tips for Taking Care of Your Investment Area rugs are a big investment, so it’s essential to care for them properly in order to keep them looking lovely for years. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s care tips. Here are a few additional pointers: Vacuum with care Improper vacuuming can be the death of a beautiful rug. High-powered vacuums with beater brushes can pull threads out of the back of the rug, cause the rug to fuzz up, make the serging on the edge of the rug come loose and deteriorate, and destroy the fringes on the ends of rugs. So, when
66
you vacuum your rug, turn off the beater brush and use the “floor” setting. Use the hand attachment for the serging and fringe, holding the nozzle in place, then lifting it to move to the next place instead of running it back and forth. Protect your rug from sun damage Sun will make the colors in your rug fade. Try to keep your area rug out of direct sunlight. If you can’t, draw the drapes during the time of day when the sun hits your rug. Even out wear and tear If your rug is in a high-traffic spot, rotate it every three to six months so it wears evenly. Use care when cleaning spots If you spill something on your rug, clean it up immediately. Once a stain 70

Here are five tricks for making traditional decor fresh.
plays more modern is to hang the pieces close together.
Mix Up Matching Furniture Groupings Symmetry is a hallmark of a traditional look. But that doesn’t mean you have to fill your house with furniture groupings consisting of pieces from sets. Place a new piece or two that looks a little different from the others in the room. For example, if all your wood is stained, how about adding a piece that is painted? If your sofa and chairs are covered in similar fabrics, reupholster the sofa or the chairs in a contrasting textile. Want to take it a step further? Try this popular style technique: Upholster the front and back of a chair in different but harmonious fabrics. It is such an edgy look that it makes me smile every time I see it.
Update Your Color Palette While some of the hues in a traditional color palette will never go out of style, like black and white, others definitely have a limited lifespan. If your home is saturated with the colors that were big 20 or 30 years ago, it will instantly look dated, even if you have fresh furnishings and accents in the spaces. The only way to combat getting stuck in the past is to constantly tweak your color palette.
Interject Bolder Art Adding a piece or two of new art will help you make great strides toward freshening up a traditional look. Stop and take a hard look at your existing artwork. Is the subject matter or style dated? Are the mats faded and the frame nicked and scuffed? Most importantly, do you still love it? Often, we just grow tired of looking at the same pictures year after year, but don’t ever think to change it out for something new. The hot new look in traditional artwork is bigger and bolder. In my own bedroom I’ve added a collage of female nudes. The room is traditional, but the mix of classic and contemporary thematic artwork is intriguing. I like how the interjection of the modern art gives the space a fresher feel. Another trick for making artwork disAREA RUGS — From Pg. 67 is set, it’s a lot harder to remove. Never rub the spill because that forces the liquid deeper into the rug. Instead, blot with a clean, white cloth. If you have a wool rug, use lukewarm water and a special carpet clearer to remove the stain residual. If the November - December 2013
Add a Few Transitional Accents One of the easiest and least expensive ways to keep a traditional room looking new is to weave in a few transitional accents. We mix the most traditional of accents, like looking glasses and crystal water vases and silver candlesticks, with contemporary looks, like a bright orange ceramic vase. White pottery pieces, with their sleek lines and contemporary vibe, still look classic enough to use in traditional rooms. They are different enough from the norm that they will catch viewers by surprise, yet not so different that they feel out of place surrounded by antiques. Update Lamps and Shades Dated lamps can bring down the style IQ of a room in a flash. A decade ago, the market was glutted with lots of cheap lamps that have not stood the test of time. It’s time to let these unremarkable light pieces go and replace them with lamps that will make a huge style statement in your room. ∆
rug is made from synthetic material, use a spot remover or an all-purpose cleaner to break down grease. To remove stains from natural-fiber rugs, just use lukewarm water. Clean up the residue with clean water and dry, absorbent towels. ∆

FLOWER — From Pg. 57 foam is another wonderful product to use with larger-sized arrangements. Soak thoroughly and then cut or stack to size and use anchor tape to hold in place. If you will be arranging with larger stems, place chicken wire over the foam for added stability. Floral picks and wire are helpful with some of the manipulation and placement of stems. A sharp knife or a pair of shears is necessary to trim the stems before arranging in containers.
ZacharY
LEVI
Manipulation Don’t be afraid to handle and play with different length stems. One of the easiest ways to create an arrangement is to make the arrangement in your hand, combining selected stems at desired heights. Snip the stems again as you’re holding and place snugly in a vase of fresh tepid water. Experiment with the different ways to manipulate your stems for unique looks. Small-gauge floral wire can be inserted through the head of a flower (like a daisy) and down into the stem to give it flexibility and allow you to gently bend or curl it. Leaves and grasses can be folded and rolled. Use floral tape to wrap or secure. Poke the stems of some blooms through the middle of leaves to create interesting looks. Just be sure everything will have access to water. Use pictures of arrangements from magazines as inspiration. Arrange so that it is pleasing to your eye, that there is the desired balance and always disguise the mechanics you’re using with filler and leaves.

Maintenance and Disposal The longer your stems can drink in fresh water, the better. For your arrangements that are simply placed in vases, it’s a good idea to snip your stems about half an inch every few days and change the water. Applying a light mist of water to foliage is also helpful. For arrangements set in floral foam and the like, it isn’t practical to remove and rearrange on a regular 85

t happens every time at your local market — the Strawberry Crisis. Should you buy two boxes of strawberries for $5 or go organic and pay the same amount for one box? Is it really worth it? All food is basically safe, right? Do you really need to spend a premium for organic strawberries? The answer according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is clear: When it comes to strawberries, either grow ‘em yourself in a toxin-free way or buy organic. That’s because conventionally grown strawberries carry pesticides the way doughnuts carry sugar. Through no fault of its own, it’s on the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list. Not a good thing. No wonder the strawberry is red in the face. The Dirty Dozen Plus list — fruits and vegetables heavy in pesticides — is the brainchild of the Environmental Working Group. The EWG is a research and advocacy group that “uses the power of information to protect public health and environment.” If, for instance, you want to know if your brand of lipstick is toxic, or your sunscreen has carcinogens in it, you can go to EWG’s website and do a little research. Here is their Dirty Dozen+ list along with the much more cheerful Clean 15 list. Try one of their delicious pastas, the Frutti Di Mare entrée or the filet mignon served over polenta and green beans. For casual dining visit Betty’s, a 60’s style diner with neon lighting, matching decor, jukebox music and typical fare. The resort also features a luxurious spa where you can pamper yourself with an array of massages, facials and makeovers. Try their signature massage — a combination of Swedish and Asian techniques with a touch of aromatherapy. A huge pool complex, now under construction, is scheduled to open in 2014. If you are a golfer you’ll love the resort’s 18 hole championship course, with its rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, pools, lakes and streams. Also make sure to hike the resort’s Woodland Trail, a two mile stream-side path in front of the hotel. If you want to partake in outdoor activities the neighboring area offers everything from water sports to horseback riding and skiing. Mount Airy Casino Resort is about a 90 minute drive from northern New Jersey. For reservations, call 1-877-682-4791 or visit www.mountairycasino.com. ∆ Chilled lobster.

TO BUY OR NOT— From Pg. 76 healthier lifestyle, you just naturally want to feed your body the cleanest, most real food you can. So push out the envelope, and buy these organic: apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, hot peppers, nectarines (imported), peaches, spinach, strawberries, sweet bell peppers, kale/collard greens and summer squash. Careful readers may notice that the EWG has listed 14 foods in its Dirty Dozen. The two add-ons are domestically grown summer squash (zucchini is one kind) and leafy greens, specifically kale and collards. Why the add-ons? For the second year in a row, the EWG is calling special attention to these crops because they are “commonly contaminated with pesticides exceptionally toxic to the nervous system.” And they’re out there on the shelves, THE CLEAN 15 Some people like to buy everything organic, just to be cautious and because they’re supporting a whole system that believes in sustainable agriculture, conscious farming and the labeling of GMOs. But according to the EWG, these are the fruits and vegetables that don’t need to be bought organic: asparagus, avocados, cabbage, cantaloupe, sweet
corn, eggplant, grapefruit, kiwi, mangos, mushroom, onions, papaya, pineapple, sweet peas (frozen) and sweet potatoes. And one more thing to mention about pesticides, pro and con. For kids, there’s no pro — it’s all con. Pesticides commonly found in conventional fruits and vegetables are not good for kids, according to Dr. Chensheng (Alex) Lu, who’s featured in a two-minute video posted on the EWG site. Lu, associate professor of environmental exposure biology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and his associates worked with kids who ate conventional fruits and veggies. They found alarming amounts of pesticides in their urine. Infants and kids are much more vulnerable than adults when it comes to pesticides, says Lu. Their brains and bodies are still developing, and they don’t have the detoxifying systems that adults have. Here’s the good news: Lu reports that after just five days of eating organic fruits and vegetables, most pesticides disappeared from the kids’ urine samples. When they went back to eating conventional stuff, their pesticide levels shot back up. And that’s what you should remember when your strawberry crisis kicks in: Pay now, or pay later. ∆
GROW YOUR RETIREMENT— From Pg. 45 My fundamental advice is to keep doing the right things in both good times and bad. That means making a genuine commitment to spending less and saving more — and sticking to it whatever it takes. Today’s uncertain economy might make it more difficult to achieve your retirement goals, but the good news is that the things
you can do right now to achieve them have more to do with your own prudent management than the current economy. So be positive, and stay focused on the things you can control. You’ll feel more comfortable about today — and still be able to contemplate a relatively comfortable tomorrow. ∆
FLOWER Arrangements— From Pg. 85 basis, so just make sure the foam stays wet and spray the foliage with a light water mist. One or two dead stems doesn’t mean the entire arrangement is dead; just remove the stems that have lost their luster and replace with fresh ones. When it’s time to
retire the foliage completely, dispose of things in the compost bin so they can once again be beneficial in your gardens. You can save the fallen petals and dry them for use in handcrafted potpourri mixes and sachets. ∆
