What Are You Doing To Your Child? By Jan Denise
W
hen you hold a newborn baby, you sense something God-like, even if you’re an atheist. A baby is untainted, sacred, perfect! It’s important to hold that thought because incessant crying can get old, questions can grow monotonous, and running after a toddler can be a full-time job. That’s not really the problem, though; the problem is that you already have a full-time job. That means trying to turn the child into less than a full-time job — or, sadly, less than he or she is. You’re likely to find yourself saying
19
Hi Class Living
“no,” a lot. The average child hears 432 negative comments versus only 32 positive comments on any given day. “I’ve seen a shift from physical abuse to verbal abuse; we now have parents who wouldn’t think of spanking kids but crush their little hearts with words,” says longtime parent educator Judy H. Wright aka “Auntie,” an honorary Native American title meaning wise woman who loves unconditionally and doesn’t judge. She explains that even when kids don’t
Your child is perfect, remember? Rather than try to change him, validate him. Help her to hear and move to her own music.

understand negative words, they understand the facial expressions and body language that accompany them. And they always believe the negative actions. To get an idea of how that affects a child, imagine yourself as a 3-year-old, still very much dependent on your parents for survival. You run to greet Mom, but she’s not as excited to see you, as you are to see her. And she wants you to wash the jelly off your hands before you touch her. Keep in mind that there’s nobody else for you to run to, and you’re biologically programmed to be sensitive to rejection (survival of the species depended on that). November-December 2009
20
You get the message that there’s something wrong with you, not just your behavior or your sticky hands. So, what do you do? You try harder to win Mom’s acceptance, to be good enough to be lovable. But even when you win her approval, it seems contingent on playing by her rules or her music. And without realizing it, you begin to tune out your own music. “The average child becomes an expert at self-sacrifice at the level of the life force itself,” says Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D., noted psychotherapist and philosopher. If you’re wondering what this means to the average child — or your child, as the case may be — you might consider what it has meant to you. Who are you? Can you hear your music? Are you dancing to it? Or was it really somebody else’s music you passed on to your child? If you want to know what you’re doing to your child, you might look at what your parents did to you. I’m not asking you to play the role of victim. You’re an adult now. I am asking you to wake up to your own childhood wounds and to your own parenting style. Catch the negative before it comes out of your mouth, and before it shows up on your face. Let it remind you to affirm your child’s true self with words, facial expressions and gestures. Hug, kiss, tickle, take time to listen and interact. Nurture, guide, reassure. Be present. The idea is to make your child feel seen, known, respected and loved for whom he is naturally, for what makes her unique — not for what makes him or her convenient or compliant or image-enhancing. Please note that this means getting to know your child’s authentic self, preferably before you both lose sight of it. Give your child what you wish you had gotten. And please don’t fool yourself about what you got. If you do, your child will suffer with you. To stop the abuse, be an “Auntie,” a wise one who loves unconditionally and doesn’t judge. ∆

Bartering By Cliff Ennico
I
n difficult economic times, a lot of people resort to one of the most ancient forms of commerce — bartering, swapping or “horse trading.” While our ancestors may have swapped chickens for corn, today’s barter transactions typically involve services — “I’ll do your oil change if you help me fill out my tax return.” November-December 2009

Hi Class Living
The good news is that bartering is perfectly legal. The bad news is that you can’t avoid paying income or sales taxes when you barter something instead of paying cash. You can barter things directly with someone else, or you can participate in a “barter exchange,” many of which now exist online, such as www.imsbarter.com or www.u-exchange.com. Here’s how barter exchanges typically work: • You create a “posting” offering something for sale on the exchange; • Either you or the exchange assign a “dollar value” to the products or services you offer for sale, and award you “credits” equal to the dollar value of the items you are bartering; and • You can then use these “credits” to purchase goods or services being offered by other members of the barter exchange. So what about taxes? If you swap something for something having equal value, it’s a “wash,” and there are no taxes to pay, right? Well, not exactly . . . In the IRS’s view, a barter exchange is really two separate transactions — you are “selling” something and “purchasing” something in return, even though no actual cash changes hands. So the IRS requires you to report a barter transaction the same way you would report any other transaction — the market value of the goods or services you “purchase” are recorded as income on your Schedule C, and the market value of the goods or services you “sell” are recorded as an expense. If the two transactions match up, then there is truly a “wash,” and no income taxes are payable. You may, however, have to pay sales taxes on the market value of the goods or services you receive — ask a local accountant or tax lawyer for details. If you are swapping goods and services on a “barter exchange,” you had better get this right, because the exchange is required by law to send you IRS Form 1099-B, “Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions,” next January. November-December 2009
This form will show the market value of all of the items you “purchased” on the barter exchange, but not any of the items you “sold” — you will have to keep track of these separately and report them as “expenses” on your Schedule C. What if the market value of the item you receive in a barter transaction is disproportionately large or small when compared to the value of the item you trade away? The IRS looks upon any disparity in barter value as income to the recipient — capital gains income if the item received is a “capital asset,” and ordinary income in all other cases. So, for example, if you are a construction contractor, and I form your limited liability company (LLC) in exchange for your building an addition to my house without charge for labor, the IRS would require me to pay tax on the difference between the market value of the construction job (what you would normally charge) and the value of the LLC (what I would normally charge). In a situation like this, you are well advised to pay cash, what the IRS calls “boot,” to make the values more equal. Also, you cannot avoid capital gains taxes by swapping an item that has appreciated in value. For example, you buy a dusty old painting at a flea market for $10. You have it cleaned by a local antiques dealer and discover that it’s an original Rembrandt worth $5 million. Rather than sell the painting at Sotheby’s, you swap it with another collector for a Vermeer painting worth $5 million. While the “swap” in this case would be free from tax, you would not be able to avoid the capital gains tax on the $5-million market value of the Rembrandt (less, of course, the $10 you paid for it). One last thing: Barter should be only a very small percentage of your business. The last time I looked, the IRS, your mortgage bank, your landlord and your local supermarket will deal only in cold, hard cash. If you’re thinking about paying your rent in chickens, please talk to your attorney first. ∆

Thinking About Inking? Marilynn Preston

utterflies on the butt, Sanskrit OMs on the ankles, limb-loads of serpents, peace signs, lotus flowers. There is no end to the creativity, or the colors, or the speculation about their power and magic.
It turns out that 14 percent of the U.S. population now has a tattoo. Why so many? There are all kinds of theories about why people get tattoos, but bottom line, they are an ancient and traditional form of body art, decorations that demonstrate a person’s style, independence, philosophy, feelings. But what happens when those feelings change? Or you switch gangs? Or you marry someone else? People on the path of a healthier, happier lifestyle know that everything changes. Dr. Roy Geronemus, member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), offers the following tips: 1. Keep colors simple. Tattoos that are done in neon or unusually bright colors can require Black & Decker power tools to erase. Geronemus suggests you stick to just one or two basic colors. 2. Think small. You may be filled with love for your girlfriend, or your mother, or your country, but you don’t have to express it all the way up your arm. Think small. simpler the tattoo, the less painful it is to remove or disguise. 3. When possible, show your love another way. Everything changes, and when it does, you’re left with a permanent reminder of someone you may want to forget. Or, later, explain. What to do? Show your love another way. Plant a tree, name your boat, donate money to a worthy cause. If you do succumb, at least get your tattoo in a spot that is easy to hide. 4. Remember that you won’t always be so buff. Dr. G. knows the truth about bodies. As they age, they soften and sag, so whatever you are imprinting on your tight little bum or bulging bicep will look a lot different as you expand. 5. Think about your future. Plastering your body with pretty pictures may seem like the thing to do when you’re young and looking for magic, but what about when you’re looking for a job, or meeting your boyfriend’s parents? How can I put this? If you want a career, consider the rear. ∆

Jackets
I
f you only buy one thing this season, make it a great jacket. It’s the foundation for every major fashion statement. There are plenty of different styles of jackets to choose from, and there are all kinds of ways to wear them. Find that perfect jacket, and mix and match with basics you already have in your closet. However, remember, it’s more “mismatching” that usually makes a modern wardrobe more interesting. Here’s a quick checklist: The boyfriend jacket It’s got the strong shoulders and the longer length. It’s the perfect jacket to toss over slim trousers or skinny jeans, but some of these jackets can overwhelm you. Try them on and make sure they give you a smooth silhouette. Don’t get too carried away with the “slouchy” look -- a la the Olsen twins, who look adorable in anything they wear even if it’s two sizes too big. The cropped jacket There are lots of variations to this style. You can find these shorter jackets in roomy, swingy A-line cuts or very boxy and buttoned up. Three-quarter sleeves are perfect with the season’s popular longer gloves. This is definitely a jacket style that you have to try on to see if it flatters your body The cropped jacket makes a major statement this season. shape. If you’ve got a big bottom, you’ll want to skip this one. The tweed jacket Miss Marple? No way. The new tweeds are more “sexy secretary” than frumpy. Try layering a shorter tweed jacket over a longer tunic with jeans for a great weekend look. And yes, these are always great for the office. Instead of wearing them with trousers, pair a menswear tweed with a short shift dress.
The knit topper From knit blazers to cardigan coats to boucle jersey cocoon wraps, the soft topper is a great contrast to slick leather and menswear tailoring. And of course, we know knits are always the most comfortable thing we can wear. ∆

The motorcycle jacket Closely akin to the military style, the leather biker jackets this season are also revving up with statement-making power. The more zippers and hardware the better! Jeans, of course, are the standard “go-with” for this jacket, but the newest way to wear the retro classic is over a chiffon sheath dress. Funky!

The military jacket Now, this one makes a statement. Balmain was a big promoter of this look (Michael Jackson actually was a big fan of their jackets), and many fashion designers have incorporated one or two styles into their collections. This style with all its fanfare may not be for the faint of fashion heart, but let the rock star roll in you. Go with it when you want to make a big “over the top” impression.

his season, they’re irresistible. Ladies are definitely going to want a new pair of shoes, maybe two or three or more. Step out and take a platform on bold shapes and colors. One new pair of boots that stretches over your knees or a pair of purple suede pumps can do wonders for your wardrobe.
Here are my top shoe picks that you’ll fall head over heels for this season: The platform pump. That’s right, it’s time to pump it up. A little bit retro and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, the pump gets glammed up with thicker soles that bring this workhorse shoe to new heights. Check out Jessica Simpson’s mock-croc suede version or Bandolino’s embossed purple leather. The over-the-knee-boot. These slim and trim tall boots are making a huge style statement this year. And if you can pull them off, go for it. They’re great with short skirts or pulled up over leggings. Fit is key, so try them on before you hand over your credit card. If you like the lean look, but can’t quite do the over-the-top thing, then opt for a more

The gladiator-inspired sandals that captured the accessory trend headlines for spring and summer are still around, but during cooler months, these strappy shoes are paired with dark leggings or tights. If you’re really brave, try teaming them with bright-colored opaque hosiery, such as red or purple. Ankle booties. Think Granny boots with attitude. Mix in some vintage vibes with modern updates — zippers, belts and straps with laced-up ties. These new ankle boots are the perfect match for skinny jeans or cropped pants. The hybrid jacket Part-blazer and part-outerwear, this garment is all about multitasking and multifunction. “The 2-in-1 factor makes this jacket the season’s go-to item for price and value,” says Julian. Designers have placed distinct pockets to house MP3 players and phones, while convertible collars, throat latches and removable linings have been detailed for a handcrafted touch.

The plaid patterns Plaid patterns in updated and reinvented scales, proportions and color combinations are in this season. Look for hints of this trend inside collars and cuffs on shirts and inside jackets. “This classic is no longer the domain of the lumberjack or the country gentleman,” admits Julian. “Plaids now contemporize the wardrobe and can be dressed up by layering patterned plaid items with other plaids or dressed down by teaming plaids with denim.”

The cardigan The evolution of the cardigan continues, and this season’s menswear trends prominently feature the sweater as outerwear. “Thicker yarns, interior linings and button closures allows these knits to be outdoorfriendly,” says Julian. Collars that wrap, stand up or crossover are other important details on cardigan sweaters. Closures can be zip-front, togglefront or asymmetric. Tailored clothing Guys, it’s time to invest in the silhouette shift. There is a new slimmer statement from brands that appeal to younger customers. “Keep it tailored, but mix it up with a vest or half-zip sweater over a woven shirt and tie. Fine gauge knits and turtlenecks add a contemporary flair,” he says. Power accessories Don’t ignore the power of accessories as one of the most economical ways to update a wardrobe. Totes are the “it” bag for men, while the fedora is the hat style of choice. Solid sterling silver is the pick for jewelry, and watch out for big bold watches. ∆

Planning A Thanksgiving Dinner By Mary Carol Garrity
E
very year at Thanksgiving, we all face a dilemma: How to use the dining-room table to best accommodate the friends and family who join us for this food fest? Should we attempt a traditional sit-down dinner, with everyone squeezed around the dining-room table? Or should we use the table as a buffet, letting guests scatter about the house, and snatching a seat? Through the years, I’ve learned some tricks for making both presentations beautiful and special. Perhaps they will help you as you set up for guests this Thanksgiving. DINE IN Thanksgiving dinner is a chance to sit around the table with family and friends, laughing and telling stories long into the night. So if you can manage it, dining at the table should always be the first choice. If you’re expecting an intimate group, set a truly

lavish table, one worthy of this grand holiday. Use your silver serving pieces, china and crystal. And take the time to add special touches, like names and menu cards. But if you’re entertaining a large group, you’ll need to plan the table very efficiently so you can economize on space without compromising on style. One way to save coveted table space is to plate each guest’s meal in the kitchen, then use a butler’s cart to hold refills. Also keep individual place settings simple so they don’t gobble up much room. For instance, use small wicker trays instead of oversized chargers. Pour your creative energy into creating a centerpiece that’s attractive yet streamlined. Try white pottery urns and cachepots, being sure to vary the heights to keep things interesting. Then fill the containers with green and white gourds and fall foliage. For a more glamorous look, mist pumpkins, leaves and nuts with gold or silver spray paint and arrange your glammed-up goodies in tall cylinder vases, apothecary jars or urns. CARRY OUT When the size of your party outstrips the space around your table, switch to Plan B and create a sumptuous buffet on the dining-room table. Buffets are easy to

set up yet are every bit as beautiful as a wonderfully set table. Start with a dramatic centerpiece. Fill a large cylinder vase with branches, then add in fall foliage dotted with berries and pods. This arrangement is light, loose and airy, yet incredibly powerful. Next, enlist your finest serving pieces, like silver chafing dishes and trays, crystal pitchers and compotes, and china vases and plates. For contrast, include rustic pieces like a wicker basket holding silverware bundles. One secret of an eye-catching buffet is to use a variety of heights in your food presentation. A sea of platters and plates set flat against the table can be monotonous. So generate visual energy by elevating some of your selections. Use a three-tiered server to hold cheeses. Stack one cake plate on top another to display fresh fruit. Fill a compote with rolls. Place a crystal water pitcher and goblets on a footed silver serving tray. When you arrange the serving dishes, make sure the order makes sense so guests can flow around the table without having to double back to get an out-of-place item. Then, label each culinary creation with a beautifully lettered menu card. Use oversized white square dinner plates because they hold lots of food, and guests can easily balance them on their laps. ∆
but really can’t wear them. But who says you can’t have comfort and style at the same time? This season, it’s time to slip into some flats that have a little more character than in the past -- complete with shimmering jewels, shining gems and playful studs and stones. You don’t have to be boring just because you like to wear flats. Go for the glow by sliding into some twinkle toes. You’ll have very happy feet. ∆

Avoid Holiday Weight Gain. Practice Defensive Dining By Rallie McAllister, M.D.
F
rom Thanksgiving till New Year’s Day, we’re practically bombarded with food – and of course, the temptation to eat it.
September-October 2009
With all the extra eating going on, a little weight gain is to be expected. If you’re like most Americans, you can expect to pack on at least a pound and a half of extra weight over the holiday season. While a weight gain of less than two pounds isn’t necessarily a cause for alarm, the fact that most folks never shed the extra weight is more worrisome. In spite of all those New Year’s resolutions to slim down, the majority of Americans tend to gain – and keep – at least one additional pound 44
each year throughout adulthood. It’s not impossible to eat sensibly and avoid weight gain over the holidays, but it can be challenging, especially if you don’t develop a good strategy ahead of time. One of the best ways to avoid overdoing it is to practice a little defensive dining. Sometimes, it’s not the mere presence of all those tasty goodies that leads you into temptation, it’s the high-pressure tactics of the people around you. If you don’t consume enough food to strain the seams
of your favorite Santa sweater, concerned friends and relatives may worry that you’re in imminent danger of starving to death. To avoid being persuaded to eat against your will, it’s wise to rehearse several versions of a polite-but-firm refusal ahead of time. You might want to learn a few nonlethal self-defense moves while you’re at it, since some folks just won’t take no for an answer. Once you’ve established full control of

added bulk, they can help make you feel fuller faster, leaving less room for highcalorie sweets and treats. While fresh fruits and vegetables are low in fat and calories, they’re often served with condiments that aren’t quite so benign. It’s best to use veggie dips and salad dressings sparingly, since a quarter cup of some varieties contains up to 300 calories and 40 grams of fat. to the wind when you’re munching on celery stalks and melon balls, most other foods should be consumed in moderation. Extra large serving sizes and second helpings should be avoided whenever possible. After eating a robust holiday meal, even a single serving of dessert can cause you to exceed your caloric limit. Savoring just a few bites of your favorite cherry cheesecake might be all it takes to satisfy your sweet tooth, but if you eat an entire slice, you’ll take in an extra 350 calories and 22 grams of fat. While you’re engaging in defensive dining, remember to count the calories that you drink, as well as the ones you eat. If you really don’t want that cup of eggnog, you can save yourself 350 calories and 20 grams of fat by politely declining. Alcohol is fat free, but it’s still a source of calories. In most cases, you’ll consume around a hundred calories with every 4-ounce glass of wine, 12-ounce bottle of light beer or ounce-and-a-half serving of liquor. It’s not always the caloric content of spirits that makes them such a danger to your diet – it’s the effects of the alcohol. After drinking a second glass of wine, you may decide that you really do need a third slice of pecan pie. No matter how careful you are, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up consuming more calories than you need over the holiday season. One of the best ways to compensate for those extra calories is to step up your level of activity. Fortunately, dining defensively will give you a mild aerobic workout. Dodging the person who’s determined to refill your glass or plate will require you to stay in constant motion. It’s not easy to eat sensibly this time of year, but by practicing a little defensive dining, you can keep holiday weight gain to a minimum. ∆

Warm Holiday Greetings Spread Cold-Causing Germs By Rallie McAllister, M.D.
H
oliday hugs and handshakes can spread more than good cheer. Unfortunately, warm greetings can lead to the transmission of cold-causing viruses. If you’re like most American adults, you’ll catch a cold two to four times each year. With each infection, you can expect to spend around eight to 10 days under the weather: coughing, sniffling, sneezing and feeling miserable in general. A visit to your doctor won’t hurt, but it probably won’t help that much, either. Although we’ve amassed a mighty arsenal of powerful drugs designed to fight the most dreaded diseases, we still haven’t found an effective cure for the common cold. Surprisingly, most of the symptoms associated with colds aren’t caused by the cold virus itself – they’re caused by the reaction of your body’s immune system to the virus. The copious mucus secretions that make you cough, sniffle, snort and blow are a big part of the problem. As early as an hour after cold viruses have infected the lining of your nose and throat, the invaded cells begin to release chemicals called prostaglandins. These chemicals produce swelling of the mucous membranes, leading to nasal November-December 2009
stuffiness and congestion. Prostaglandins also attract white blood cells to the site of the infection to battle the malicious microbes. As these diseasefighting cells report for duty, they begin to pile up by the millions in your nose, throat and chest, producing the massive flow of mucus that typically accompanies the common cold. Most folks turn to over-the-counter cold formulas for relief of their symptoms, and there are hundreds available. Nonprescription cold remedies typically contain some combination of antihistamines, decongestants, cough suppressants and pain relievers. None of these concoctions can stop the infection itself: They merely mask its symptoms. Even worse, some antihistamines and decongestants actually hinder the ability of the immune system to rid the body of the cold-causing virus. If you’re interested in making a speedy recovery, your best bet may be to steer clear of these conventional over-thecounter remedies and take a more natural

Hi Class Living
approach. Recent research suggests that the mineral zinc and an herb known as echinacea may reduce both the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Last year, scientists at the University of Connecticut reported that taking echinacea can reduce the duration of cold symptoms by an average of 1.4 days. Their study, known as a meta-analysis, evaluated the results of 14 previous clinical trials involving nearly 3,000 subjects. The researchers also reported that echinacea appears to have powerful coldpreventing properties. When taken prior to exposure to cold-causing viruses, the herb reduced the risk of infection by an impressive 58 percent. Although its mechanism of action isn’t entirely understood, echinacea appears to have anti-viral properties as well as soothing, anti-inflammatory effects. The herb has been shown to stimulate the immune system, enhancing its ability to destroy disease-causing germs. Like echinacea, zinc appears to bolster the body’s immune response by triggering production of a natural virus-fighting substance called interferon. Some experts
believe that zinc may act directly on the cold virus, preventing it from latching onto the cells in the respiratory tract and hindering its ability to multiply. In a recent study conducted by researchers at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, cold sufferers using zinc lozenges shook off their symptoms in half the time of those who received placebo lozenges. While over-the-counter cold remedies can cause a number of unwelcome side effects ranging from drowsiness to high blood pressure, zinc and echinacea are generally safe and well-tolerated when taken as directed. The most common side effect associated with zinc lozenges is an unpleasant taste described as bitter or metallic. In sensitive individuals, echinacea can cause nausea and stomach upset. Because there’s no sure-fire cure for the common cold, preventing infection is especially important. Staying home when you’re sick and washing your hands regularly will help you enjoy holiday greetings without giving – or receiving – coldcausing viruses. ∆

Perfect Sofa
By By Mary Mary Carol Carol Garrity Garrity
Here are some tips for picking the perfect one for your home: Size It Up Interior designers like to argue about whether it’s more important for a sofa to fit the scale of your room or the contours of your body. In my opinion, you need one that does both, because in the long run,
you won’t be happy with a sofa that isn’t the perfect proportion for your room or for your posterior. To make sure your sofa suits the space, before you shop, measure your room and make note of the size and scale of additional furniture you will need to work around. Then, as you shop, forget your inhibitions and flop down on the sofas just

like you would at home. Your body will tell you in a flash if the sofa is a fit. Pick the Right Parts Just like people, sofas have backs, arms, seats and legs. And if you’re like most of my customers, you will have a strong preference on each facet of your sofa’s anatomy. First, pick a back that suits your taste and touch. If you want a formal, tailored look, check out a tight back design, where the back is upholstered and has no removable cushions. If you want a sofa that’s more comfortable and casual, you might prefer a loose-back sofa that’s covered with cushions or pillows. Next, consider the arms. The most common style is a rolled arm that curves outward -- an ideal pick for those who like to nap on the sofa. If you’re looking for a more modern look, however, you might prefer a crisp, square arm. As important as arm shape is arm height. How high do you want your sofa’s arm to come? Third, decide whether you’d like your sofa to have a cushioned, bench or tight seat. Cushioned seats consist of separate cushions that fit snugly together, and they are a great option if you want to remove the covers for laundering. A bench seat is one

large cushion that spans the entire length of the sofa. Tight seats are built into the frame of the sofa and cannot be removed. They are usually firmer and more formal in appearance. Finally, look at the sofa’s legs. Do you want a straight, modern leg, or a more traditional look, like curved legs on castors? Or would you rather cover the legs with a skirt featuring kick, inverted, button or box pleats? Superb Style If you’re overwhelmed by the dizzying selection of sofa styles, start by checking out a few of my favorites: The English or Club sofa was my pick for my own living room. This timeless style features slightly rounded arms set back from the rolled back. You can dress this sofa up or down simply by changing your accent pillows. If you like sofas with high arms, the Knole style may be just right for you. This mainstay of the English country look has a straight, high back and angled arms. Traditional models feature finials wrapped in cords at the juncture of the back and arms. For a formal library, I’d get a 73

First, decide on the “look.” Is the house to be designed in a traditional style -- or with a contemporary motif? Next, mentally visualize the designs for the walls. Do you want the walls to look slick and shiny? Then elegant is the style you want. Or will the walls be textured? If so, the look will be more casual. Either wall design can be accomplished with paint or wallpaper. Now that a style has been determined,

select a pattern that catches your eye. The pattern should include the colors you need to develop the design of the room. Another approach is to decide on colors that are most appealing to you. Select one main color, then two complementary or coordinating colors as accents. If you have a difficult time matching or coordinating colors, get a color wheel. Select one color you love. The two colors next to it will be good matches as accents. If you prefer a bolder approach, pick a bright color, then look at the opposite side of the color wheel for the perfect complementary color. The third color in this scheme can be a mixture of those two colors. The furnishings should fit the room just right. If the room is large, floating the furnishings in the room rather than setting them against the wall is more appealing and makes the room setting inviting. If the room is small, then cut down the size of the furniture and use fewer pieces. The style of furnishings should match with the overall style chosen, of course, but an accent piece of a different motif can really spiff up a MAKING SENSE OF GIFT — From Pg. 55 and doesn’t have to be reported — is what often causes confusion. To help clarify, I’ll outline the basics of how these two work together. THE ANNUAL EXCLUSION PLUS THE LIFETIME EXCLUSION Currently, an individual can give up to $13,000 a year to anyone — and to an unlimited number of people — without incurring gift taxes. (This amount is periodically adjusted for inflation). These gifts don’t even have to be reported. A married couple can agree to split gifts and give up to $26,000 a year to the same individual gift-tax free. The great, and sometimes confusing, aspect of the annual exclusion is that it is separate from the $1 million lifetime exclusion. It’s only when you give more than $13,000/year to any one individual that your gift counts toward your lifetime exclusion and has to be reported. November-December 2009
room. If “traditional” is the look of choice, an ultra-contemporary lamp or end table can be fun and eye-catching. If you have a more contemporary setting, one traditional piece, perhaps an antique cocktail table, could be the focal point. Popular floor coverings lately have been either wide-plank wood floorings or oversized tiles. Carpeting is still popular, but mostly for bedrooms. Area rugs can be scattered tastefully around for more of a cozy and welcome feel. Place the rugs under cocktail tables or spread out over a larger space, depending on the size of the room and your preference. Lighting is also very important. Natural light is best, but even that should be tempered with proper window treatments. If the room has a great view, use light shades or sheer draperies. In the end, what the room will be used for will determine the type of lighting required. Best of all, even though you may not be a professional, your own personal touch will make any room a great, homey retreat. ∆ SOME SIMPLE EXAMPLES On the simplest level, this means that if you give one person on million and $13,000 in a year, you would have to report the $1 million gift and you’d be at your lifetime exclusion limit. After that, you could continue to give any number of people $13,000 per year without paying a gift tax. But as soon as you gave one individual more than $13,000, you’d have to report it and pay taxes on the added amount. Now, of course, it’s the rare person who can give away $1 million in a lump sum, so the $1 million exclusion is cumulative. Here’s an example of how the numbers can add up. Let’s say you have two children and four grandchildren. As an individual, you can give each of these six people $13,000 per year without having to report the gifts or pay gift taxes. Now, let’s say that one year you want to give each child and grandchild $50,000.
66
In this case, anything above $13,000 given to any one individual has to be reported and counts toward the $1 million exclusion. So, you have $50,000 minus $13,000 leaving $37,000 per person that you have to report. Multiply $37,000 by the six recipients, and you have now accumulated $222,000 toward your lifetime exclusion. You still don’t have to pay gift taxes — and you still have $778,000 you can give away gift-tax free during your lifetime above and beyond the $13,000 you can give away annually to any number of people. SOME NOT SO SIMPLE REALITIES These examples are designed to demonstrate the concept, but in reality it’s not always that simple. For instance, to qualify for the exclusion a gift must be of present interest, which means that the recipient has an unrestricted right to the immediate use of the property. A gift of future interest, which is restricted in some way by a future date, doesn’t qualify. Gifts of cash and property where title passes immediately are examples of gifts of present interest. If you’re married, gift-giving rules can be complicated by whether or not you live in a community property state. Whether the property to be given is owned jointly or separately can also factor into the equation. Fortunately, there are other gifts that don’t trigger a tax at all. Some examples are gifts to a spouse who is a U.S. citizen, direct payments to qualified educational or medical organizations, charitable gifts and gifts to political organizations. Because there are so many different types of gifts possible, I’d suggest discussing anything beyond a straightforward transfer of cash, property or stock with your accountant. And if you’re looking at an overall gift-giving strategy as part of your estate plan, be sure to consult an estate planning attorney who can help you compare different scenarios. Sharing the wealth can feel great for both giver and receiver. Basing it on tax-smart advice can make it feel even better. ∆

Heat Up Your Hearth By Mary Carol Garrity
F
ireplaces steal our hearts and fancy, and they are usually the first thing we lay eyes on when we walk into a room.
Yet even though the fireplace is an undisputed focal point, many dress up only the mantel, leaving the hearth bare, a yawning, empty cave that grabs visitors’ attention but leaves them cold. This season, when your fireplace is not home to a merrily roaring blaze, use it as a display case to showcase some fabulous decor. Need some ideas to light your fire? Here are a few tips for turning this black hole into a show-stealer. BOUQUETS OF FOLIAGE Harvest the dizzying array of fall leaves, berries, nuts and vines at your disposal this time of year to create a jaw-dropping display on your hearth. You’ll need a hefty container that will not get swallowed up by your gaping fireplace and that is substantial enough to hold a bevy of branches and flowers without tipping over. How about an antique olive vessel? These delightful jugs, which stand over 2-feet tall, sport an aged patina perfect for fall decorating. Iron urns, beefy baskets and big cachepots are also great picks to hold autumn arrangements. November-December 2009
Start your bouquet with bare branches from your yard. Then add in faux foliage in fall colors that harmonize with your decor. For a fun, natural look loop in tendrils of honeysuckle vine throughout the bouquet. GARDEN STATUARY If you love the crumbly, aged, busts and figurines, found in English gardens, you can use reproductions to bring a bit of rustic elegance to your decor. For a great fall hearth, place a piece of garden statuary to the center or side of your fireplace. Ring the figurine’s head with a wreath of fall berries, or hang the wreath from its outstretched hand. Arrange pumpkins and gourds at its base then twist tendrils of your favorite fall vines up the statue. BIRDBATH Place a smaller version of this perennial garden favorite to the front or center of the hearth, then let your creativity run wild. Rest a fall wreath on top of the bath, then fill in with mounds of hedge apples. Or put a big pumpkin at the center 79

esterday you were a dynamo at the gym. You bench-pressed more weight than ever before; your “lats” popped with definition on each pull-down; and the muscles in your thighs rippled as you worked the leg press machine. Today, you hoist a 20-pound bag of potting soil into your car and you wrench your back. You may look fit, but chances are you’re not functionally fit.
While working out on gym weight machines can strengthen isolated muscles and make you look buff, it does little to help you perform everyday activities. To move through life more efficiently and with less risk of injury, no matter if you’re picking up a toddler, lifting a suitcase into the overhead bin or balancing on a step-ladder, functional exercises that mimic normal movement patterns should be incorporated into every fitness regimen. “We used to focus on fitness to only improve our muscular or cardiovascular strength, but never really asked ourselves, ‘OK, I’m getting fit, but what does it mean to me and how I pursue my life?’” says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist with the American Council on Exercise. “We now see that by using an integrated approach to exercise and training muscles to work not in isolation but in concert as they do in life, we can make our jobs, recreation and normal, mundane chores easier and less stressful on our bodies.” November-December 2009

Hi Class Living
Functional fitness works multiple muscles on multiple planes, simulating how we use them in real life. Functional exercises do more than strengthen. They also improve coordination and balance, prevent strength imbalances and target the stabilizing muscles that we call on many times a day. “Functional fitness is training for life, not events,” Bryant says. “It’s extremely rare that we ever use just one muscle for anything we do in life. Even something as simple as getting up off the sofa requires several muscles working together.” Performing several sets of biceps curls while seated at an exercise machine may eventually give you strong and nicely defined upper arms. But it’s rare that the biceps muscles ever work alone in real life. A more functional movement would be to do bicep curls with free weights while standing on one leg or lunging forward on alternate legs. These exercises would not only work the arms but also the legs. At the same time, in either the lunge or one-legged position, the core (abdominal, gluteal and lower back muscles) would get a workout as it’s forced to contract and tighten to help you keep your balance. Plus, these are the same combination of muscle movements that we use everyday when we pick up a heavy briefcase, a trash can or a bag of groceries. “Muscles help minimize stress on our skeletal system. If we keep those muscles strong in all ranges of motion, they can more easily stabilize joints, protect our bones and be allround better shock absorbers,” says exercise physiologist Rob Rezende. “However, if you’ve worked a muscle from just one angle on a weight machine and you deviate from that angle, as it usually happens in real life, that’s when injuries occur,” he says. One of the first steps in getting functionally fit is to get rid of the “no pain, no gain” mindset which still exists among many exercisers. But don’t be fooled into thinking functional fitness is easy. It’s not. Working various muscles at the same time can be taxing on the body and the brain. Functional exNovember-December 2009

ercises need to be done with concentrated effort and can’t just be mindless repetition. The movements are usually done at as low, deliberate pace and with lighter than normal weights. Some speed and heavier weights may be added after your body adjusts to the movements. Because many of these exercises are performed freestyle, without the support of an exercise machine, proper form needs to be the first concern. When beginning a functional fitness program, it’s a good idea to get some guidance from a fitness trainer or enroll in a group body conditioning exercise class that incorporates functional movements into the routine. The functional approach borrows liberally from disciplines as varied as yoga, Pilates and physical therapy. The workouts can have participants exercising on oversized rubber balls (stability balls), racing up and downstairs, and balancing on one leg or wobbly boards all in pursuit of core strength, aerobic endurance, flexibility, coordination and balance ... the components of any good exercise program. Adding functional fitness doesn’t mean you have to avoid the gym weight room. “You need a blend of traditional muscle workouts with some functional exercise,” Rezende says. “It’s the only way to really prepare the body for life.”∆ Picking THE PERFECT — From Pg. 62 Chesterfield sofa. Usually upholstered in leather, Chesterfields feature tufted backs, high rolled arms and tight seats. The traditional Bridgewater sofa, with its low, rolled arms and cushioned back and seat, is unassuming and ageless. This beloved style fits most people’s lifestyles and bodies. Check out the Camelback style, with its tight, arching back and high rolled arms, for a charming look that harkens back to the 18th century. The Lawson, with its low, square back and either square or rolled arms, is very boxy and hip -- an ideal choice for a contemporary or modern home. ∆

While I had passed it off as a normal issue for a man my age, I recently began to feel much more fatigued and more concerned about my poor sleeping habits. In addition, despite exercise and healthful eating, I was unable to lose the extra 10 pounds I’d recently gained. Clearly, “something was up,” and the underlying signs pointed to my chronic problems with sleeping. Fortunately for me, a young woman came to my office promoting the use of a pulse oximeter, which is a small machine that can measure the amount of oxygen in the blood continuNovember-December 2009

Sleep apnea is a very common condition. It affects more than 12 million Americans. It occurs more often in older adults who snore and are overweight. Unfortunately, many ignore the symptoms, and the problem can go untreated for years. When sleeping, people with sleep apnea stop breathing for a few seconds; it can last as long as 30 seconds. In that short time,

It’s free, it’s as green as you make it, and it’s guaranteed to help you deal with the stress and changes in your life in ways that can make you less frazzled, more functional, and healthier and happier, now and forever. Looking for work? Watching your money disappear? Wishing you had more energy, fewer aches and pains? Meditation doesn’t solve your problems. Rather, it puts them into perspective with a view toward ending your suffering. It’s a lot more complicated than that, but in the end, it’s really very simple: meditation is a time-honored tool for stilling the mind and bringing the body into balance, physically and mentally. UNTREATED SLEEP — From Pg. 75 find it much more difficult to lose weight and exercise. Also, chronic fatigue makes concentration difficult, which adversely affects work performance. Many adults ignore the symptoms of restless sleep and daytime fatigue and choose to self-medicate with sleeping pills or sedatives. If you have sleep apnea, that only makes the problem worse. When patients with sleep apnea are under the influence of sleeping pills, the sedatives allow their oxygen levels to remain low for much longer and disturb the traditional sleep-wake cycle. That, in turn, makes all the problems associated with the condition worse, including more fatigue the following day. After my night with the pulse oximeter, it was clear that I needed further evaluation from a medical professional. After receiving a complete examination by a sleep specialist and an analysis of blood tests, I have been ordered to undergo a sleep study sometime in the next few weeks. A sleep study involves monitoring brain waves using an EEG, as well as monitor-

Based on that analysis, a sleep specialist will evaluate the quality of my sleep and then formally diagnose sleep apnea or another sleep disorder that can lead to fatigue, restless leg syndrome and a condition called periodic limb movement disorder. Fortunately, there are many treatments available for sleep apnea. The most common therapy for mild to moderate sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure machine, which forces air to the lungs and keeps the breathing passages open, thus allowing the patient to sleep undisturbed. If you cannot tolerate the CPAP machine, there are also oral appliances and other machines that may help. I hope simple lifestyle changes and appropriate medical therapy will end my problems with sleep apnea. Not only will I have more energy and find it easier to lose weight but also my life expectancy and quality of life will be much-improved. ∆

f you’re lucky enough to nab a spot on a hiring manager’s DayTimer, you don’t want to ruin your chances by asking the wrong questions, right?
Liz Ryan, who apparently did well enough at her interview for Yahoo! Hotjobs to nab a writing gig, has come up with the Ten Questions Never to Ask in Job Interviews. It’s a good topic, but I’m afraid Ryan comes to some rather bogus conclusions, including the assumption that you actually want the job. Granted, even if you are tired of living on government cheese, there really is no reason to accept a position that will make you miserable, and keep you from watching “The Tyra Banks Show.” Fail to ask the questions you’re not supposed to ask and you could end up with a fate worse than unemployment — you could actually get a job! November-December 2009
Question No. 1, “What does your company do?” Ryan suggests that in the Internet era, applicants should “show up for a job interview knowing what the employer does, who its competitors are and which of its accomplishments (or challenges) have made the news lately.” But face facts, doing research takes effort. If you really wanted to work, you’d probably still have your last job. Moreover, learning what your new employer does before you start takes all the surprise out of your first day on the job! Question No. 2, “Are you going to do a background check?” is a no-no because it can give the potential employer the wrong impression about you. To me, this question 80
Don’t Hire
should be the first few words out of your mouth, right after “Do you have a bathroom?” “Is this going to take long?” and the classic, “Do you validate?” For Ryan, Question No. 2 makes you “look like a person with something to hide.” Well, you do have something to hide — specifically, past performance at all your previous positions. Asking about a background check makes the interviewer think your biggest negatives lie in an area outside of your workplace skills. That’s why I say, “Ask away.” Just be sure to add, “And does your background check include misdemeanors as well as felonies?” In the same vein, you definitely want
to ask No. 8, “Is my (medical condition) covered under your insurance?” and hope the answer is no. Unless you want to spend 12 hours a day working, the last thing you need is for some hotshot Dr. House curing your narcolepsy, your panic attacks and your kleptomania. Ryan suggests that Question No. 9, “Do you do a drug test?” could be interpreted as “I’d fail a drug test.” This is true, but she misses an important point. Drug-testing procedures are costly, and your prospective employer could appreciate the fact that you could save them this expense. That’s why I suggest that along with your resume, you bring your bong. I’m not promoting drug use, but encouraging the hiring manager to take a few hits could make the interview go a lot smoother. Question No. 3, “When will I be eligible for a raise?” is considered risky because it suggests that you are dissatisfied with your starting salary, even before you start. I think it’s OK because it suggests you will be an aggressive overachiever. Just be sure to follow it up with a few more questions, like “Now?” and “How about now?” and “Is now too soon?” Questions No. 4 and No. 5, “Do you have any other jobs available?” and “How soon can I transfer to another position?” doom you to a speedy rejection, writes Ryan, because “almost every employer will want to keep you in your seat for at least one year before approving an internal transfer, so a job-search bait-and-switch probably won’t work out the way you hoped.” I disagree. If you actually want the job, playing hard to get by demonstrating your total lack of interest in the position is catnip to hiring managers, especially HR types who are so downtrodden and unhappy that they’ll leap at the opportunity to hire you. Misery loves company, they say, but take it from me — companies also love misery. ∆
