Work/Life
Rethink Your Approach
I
n a perfect world, “work” and “home” would balance out neatly. We’d work from 8 to 5 each day, take an hour-long lunch, and then come home and spend uninterrupted time with our families. But for those of us here in the wake of the Great Recession, firmly entrenched in an “always on” society, this notion seems hopelessly outdated. Most of us are working longer, more stressful hours, and work is spilling over into evenings and weekends. No wonder a recent survey of North American employees found that 87 percent of respondents say their work/ life balance (or lack thereof) is negatively affecting their health! With so many people suffering from this problem, you would think the natural solution would be to encourage businesses to help their stressed-out employees find more balance in their lives. Not so, says Jon Gordon author of The Seed: Finding Purpose and Happiness in Life and Work. “Work/life balance, at least in the sense that most of us think about it, is a myth. It does not exist. I’ve come to realize that the dance between work and life is more about rhythm than balance.” Gordon compares the rhythms of work and life to the rhythms of nature. There’s a time and a season for everything. November - December 2011
“For most people, there are seasons when hard work and extra hours are a necessity, and seasons when there is more time for rest,” he explains. “When you love what you do — and I truly believe there is meaning and even joy to be found in every job — you’ll thrive during the busy seasons and fully appreciate the down time.” A sense of purpose, asserts Gordon, is the natural remedy for the crushing guilt that many working parents in particular experience. (You know the drill: when you’re working late, you feel guilty that you’re not home with the kids; when you’re at home, you feel guilty about all the work not getting done.) “When you believe your job has no meaning, of course you’re going to feel guilty for spending so much time there,” he notes. “It’s the realization that you are making a difference in the lives of others that lets you let go of the guilt and truly immerse yourself in what you’re doing during both seasons.” Gordon advises on rethinking the concept of work/life balance and finding pas-

sion and purpose in both arenas:
“It is going to be virtually impossible to achieve complete balance every day of your life,” says Gordon. “There will simply be days and weeks when your work requires more time from you. There will also be days when your family requires more of your time. Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to achieve a work/life balance every day, look at your life on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. Schedule times to work hard, recharge, renew, play, and engage with your family and friends.”
let go of the work/life balance notion Instead, think “purpose and passion.”It’s true that work/life balance is a topic that seems to be on many minds, says Gordon, citing a recent NPR segment titled “In America, Too Much ‘All Work, No Play’?” But in many ways, he insists, a perfectly balanced life is a perfectly tepid life. How much balance do you think Bono has when U2 is on tour? What about an Olympic Identify the “seasons” athlete preparing for a competition? Feeling Stressed?

ost people spend lots of time indoors, whether working, sleeping or watching television. Cooped up inside could be causing us to miss out on important benefits linked to communing with nature.
Being outside in natural settings makes people feel more alive, according to research published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In a study of more than 500 college students, scientists at the University of Rochester in New York found that subjects consistently reported feeling more energetic when they spent time outdoors in natural surroundings, as opposed to remaining indoors. Being outside in nature for just 20 minutes a day was enough to significantly boost energy levels and produce a greater sense of wellbeing. Sitting quietly in nature is good for you, but engaging in virtually any type of physical activity in the great outdoors appears to be even better. The results of a new study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology reveal that when subjects engaged in just five minutes of activity in a natural setting, they enjoyed dramatic boosts in mood and self-esteem. You don’t have to travel to a remote destination to tap into the powerful

benefits of nature. Research suggests that spending time in a backyard garden, on a golf course or at a city park can be as emotionally restorative as hiking or camping in the wilderness. Even if your circumstances keep you trapped indoors most of the time, it’s still possible to enjoy the health-promoting effects of nature. Simply observing natural flora and fauna through a window has been shown to reduce anxiety and anger while enhancing feelings of pleasure. These effects may come in handy while you’re driving, particularly if you’re susceptible to road rage. Rather than glaring maniacally at your fellow commuter, it’s helpful to periodically glance at the natural scenery beyond your windshield. Research suggests that taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of a blue sky or a green area while driving can lower blood pressure and heart rate significantly, reflecting a greater sense of calm and an overall reduction in the body’s response to stress. For folks suffering from illness or

injury, viewing nature appears to help diminish pain and hasten healing. In a landmark study published in the journal Science, researchers compared the effects of natural scenery and manmade structures on patients recovering from gallbladder surgery. The scientists found that surgical patients who stayed in hospital rooms with windows overlooking natural settings fared far better than those confined to rooms with windows facing brick walls. The patients whose hospital rooms afforded views of nature experienced fewer surgical complications and had faster recovery times. The nature-viewing patients also reported less post-operative discomfort and required fewer prescription painkillers than their counterparts who viewed manmade structures. While it’s easy to think that toiling at a windowless workstation might deter daydreaming and increase an employee’s productivity, the opposite is true. When office workers are able to enjoy a glimpse of nature from their desks, they report experiencing improved concentration and greater attention to detail. Exposure to nature is associated with
WORK/LIFE — From Pg. 20 of these seasons, but other busy seasons might pop up unexpectedly—such as a sick parent. You have to be ready to adjust to the season. You have to go where you are needed. If you are worried about work at those times, you can take comfort in knowing that there will be a period when you can apply more of yourself to the job.” Build up a “hard work” bank account with your company When the company needs you to really push, push hard. better problem-solving abilities and reductions in mental fatigue, irritability, illness and on-the-job accidents. The results of several studies demonstrate that employees who are able to glance outside while working tend to experience less job-related stress while enjoying greater job satisfaction. If you don’t have access to a breathtaking view of nature at work, you can always improvise with photographs or paintings. Scientists at the University of Rochester found that subjects who simply imagined themselves in natural settings felt significantly energized afterward. If you’re not able to traipse around outdoors or gaze out of windows while you’re on the job, you might be able to bring a bit of nature’s beauty indoors. Studies conducted by Norwegian researchers demonstrated that sprucing up the workplace with living plants resulted in less fatigue and fewer headaches among employees. The next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or under pressure, consider taking a moment to commune with nature. It’s one of the quickest and easiest steps you can take to calm your mind, relax your body and lift your spirits. ∆

e’ve all seen the commercials. Just spray on a cleaner and magically, as it drips down the surface... Voila! It’s clean! But is it? Really? We all want an easier way to clean our home. Somewhere along the way, we have been sold the idea that it can be done fast and with little or no elbow grease and that all of these magic chemicals will make life easier. Sometimes, they do. Most times, it’s just overkill, cleaning the surface while exposing you to an alphabet soup of chemicals and volatile organic compounds that irritate your skin, eyes and nasal passages. After I eliminated 95 percent of the household chemicals in my home (I still use a “regular” automatic dishwasher detergent), I found that I could breathe easier, and my sense of smell was much improved. Most importantly, my house was still clean. Most of the environmentally friendly cleaners on the market today do a really good job cleaning up most messes. But not all are up to the biggest challenges — bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Getting a surface

clean requires breaking the bond between the surface and the dirt. “Green” cleaners work best when they are sprayed on the surface and permitted to soak in for a minute or two. This gives them time to break that bond and dissolve the solids, permitting them to be easily wiped away. Here’s a brief overview of some green cleaners: iQ Clean New product line, Green Awards Winner 2010 for Packaging. Sold in a refillable bottle; small refill cartridges can be purchased separately and mixed with water, reducing plastic waste and transport costs. Method: Established green-product company whose line includes cleaning products and some personal-care products. Fresh, natural-based scents. Available at Target and Giant Eagle. Martha Stewart Clean New line of products manufactured by the Hain Celestial Group. Full line of household cleaners is fragrance-free and sulfate-free. Available at The Home Depot. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Large stable of products that provide green cleaning with aromatherapy. Products are scented with natural essential oils and mixed like perfumes with top, middle and base notes. Seventh Generation Established line of home and personalcare products created by one of the pioneers of the green-cleaning movement, Jeffrey Hollender. Most products are unscented or naturally lightly scented. Available at most retailers. Here is how some of these products stacked up in home trials: Glass: While most of the cleaners did an adequate job, Martha Stewart’s Glass Cleaner was the best for my money, even picking up streaks that others left behind. November - December 2011
Her formulation of corn-based ethanol (alcohol) and vinegar outperformed both chemical and green cleaners. Bathroom: Most green cleaners do a good job cleaning sticky hair spray and bathroom gunk if you let the spray sit for a few minutes. Bathtub rings are another matter. To erase them, you really need an abrasive sponge or non-scratching powder like those available from Method or Mrs. Meyer’s. Of the sprays, I preferred the Mrs. Meyers when I want a scent and Martha Stewart for unscented. iQ did not perform well, even with a scrubbing sponge. Method also makes a daily shower spray (ylang-ylang scent) that does a nice job of keeping the shower in good shape between cleanings. All-purpose cleaners: Method AllPurpose (clementine scent) worked great on my appliances and yucky stove. I loved the smell, and it left a great shine. Mrs. Meyer’s Countertop Spray does a great job and has a bonus: When the bottle is empty, you can refill with a mixture of its all-purpose cleaner and water. Martha Stewart and Seventh Generation are good for the unscented crowd, but I prefer a scented cleaner in the kitchen. Other products: Finding a green automatic dishwasher detergent is really hard. Dishwashers release vapors during the drying cycle and therefore are a big source of indoor air pollution. They should be run only when full. The best performer was Mrs. Meyer’s. Other products that are new to the market are green disinfectants made from Thymol, a component of thyme oil and anti-bacterial cleaning wipes. These products kill 99.9 percent of household germs, including influenza, and are easy to use. Method and Seventh Generation both carry a large assortment of products. Whatever products you choose, go green. It will drastically improve indoor air quality, reduce your overall chemical exposure and help keep the water supply clean. ∆

hether you want to splurge on a whole new wardrobe, or you just want to freshen up your style, you can still pull off the hottest fashion trends with just a few new items.
Here are some tips on ways to update your look right now: Make a colorful statement Buy a new jacket or coat in a bold color. Red is one of the biggest hits this season. Try it in a vibrant shade of crimson. It’s a fast way to give anything you wear underneath a punch of fashion. Pastels are also a new way to step out in cool corals, pinks and yellows. Bloom in floral prints Flower patterns are showing in everything from dresses to handbags and shoes especially in digitized graphic prints. Pick one and have some fun this season. The ‘40s-inspired printed dress is a great place to start. Dress up your jeans Whether you like fitted or flared jeans, you’ll want to add some interesting layers Missoni updates the knit poncho in its new collection at Target. November - December 2011

Get a little crafty Take a tip from Grandma. Many fashion designers worked their creative looks into artistic pieces with patchwork details that often reflect geometric American Indian motifs. Look for Southwestern graphics like Navajo-inspired coats to be new favorites. Update with animal prints Leopard may be a popular animal spot on the fashion horizon, but watch for an even newer print to snake its way into the scene — python — even in bright colors, it weaves its way into the latest boots and bags. Fluff it up You’ve seen the furry jackets, scarves and vests on the runways; now you can put some frill into your wardrobe with fur — newest when it’s bright and colorful. Feathers are another way to add some thrills to your clothes and are also a great way to make eveningwear more special. ∆

Be a caped crusader The cape is a great outerwear piece to own this season. This flowing shape can easily be worn day or night and adds a dramatic romantic flair to everything you wear. Even the poncho gets reinvented this season for a flirty change of pace. Missoni’s knit poncho at Target is one of the freshest new looks updated in the company’s iconic stripes. Just be sure to stick to slim pants, tights or a skirt when wearing this oversized shape on top. And carry a clutch or top-handle handbag. No shoulder bags for this look!

“Celebrities use red carpets as advertising,” says Bayou, who shares his style secrets in his book, “The Science of Sexy.” “They have to think carefully about what they’re going to wear, because what they’re selling is their image. The same goes for you. The minute you walk out your door, you are selling yourself and your image.” Bayou has ten “Dress Sexy” commandments. “There are some rules that apply to every woman, all the time, no matter what your height, weight or silhouette,” he says. Choose the right undergarments “Before you put on anything, the very first things you need to get are a good bra and good underwear, especially if you’re a full-sized or plus-size woman,” he says. Choose the highest quality fabrics thou can afford Bayou says buying cheap is like buying disposable clothing. “Yes, it might hurt to hand over the money for quality items, but over time, it will ultimately save you money by eliminating the constant need for new things. your age... every woman ner Bradley Bayou who of Hollywood stars.
Don’t force your figure into every style A few examples: Short women should not wear dark, knee-high boots. Women with large hips or bulging stomachs should not wear low-rise jeans. Shiny, charmeuse slip dresses should not be worn by women sizes 14 and up. Use your skin to your advantage Bayou reminds us that “A peek of flesh can instantly draw the eye straight to the spot you’re showing off - and away from a flaw you’re trying to conceal.” Don’t buy big-ticket trendy items If you look at something and have to ask yourself, ‘Do I really think this will look good in two years?’ it probably won’t.” Select skinny fabrics and cuts Bayou urges women to choose fabrics that gently flow and drape over the body to create more of a vertical, slimmer line. “Fabrics with a stiff texture or heavyweight or shiny surface will add either bulk or undue attention to the area,” he says. “This stops the eye at a horizontal One-shoulder dress by Calvin Klein at Nordstrom’s.

Ignore clothing tags the fit is the thing Bradley admits that companies size clothing in different ways. “The number on the little tag on the back of your pants or jacket is not important,” he says. “Ignore it! Who even sees what size you’re wearing anyway? Nobody. What people notice is how your clothes fit.”
The prints and accessories must be in scale with the body In a season full of dramatic prints, Bayou has a few rules: “If you want to make part of your body look larger or curvier, wear patterns with large spaces in between them, irregular print patterns, and strong color contrasts between the print and background. Reverse this rule if you want to make your body look smaller.” And remember, he says, when it comes to accessories “little things on big people look ridiculous. And big things on little people look ridiculous.”
Hail accessories They can make or break your outfit, according to Bayou. He has five reasons: They can change an outfit from formal to casual (and vice versa) in just a few seconds. They’re more affordable than clothes. They can play up your sexiest assets. They’re a great diversion from your
WORK/LIFE — From Pg. 24 goes a long way. And don’t feel guilty that you are not at home. Feeling guilty is a recipe for misery and poor performance on the job and unhappiness at home. Commit fully to your season of hard work while planning for your season of rest and recharging. “When you commit to your season of work, you won’t be tempted to watch the clock, dreading each hour that will pass before you finally get to leave work for the day,” says Gordon. “You’ll be more successful at work and feel more fulfilled.” When you’re at home, really BE at home Throw yourself into those precious family relationships. Don’t spend family time thinking about work or zoning out in front of the TV or computer. It’s not about the amount of time we spend with our families, says Gordon. It’s about how engaged we are during the time we do have with them. “When you focus on planning your life November - December 2011

around the rhythms of work and home, you have to be fully committed to the demands of the specific season,” he says. “So when you’re in a family season, don’t constantly check your BlackBerry. Don’t take work calls during dinner. Devote as much of yourself as possible to your family. Use the time that you wouldn’t get to spend with them if you were in a work season to do something special. Read to your child each night. Take your family on a surprise weekend trip. “When you live your non-work season to the fullest, you’ll be all the more motivated to give 110 percent when you’re at work,” he adds. “Make the most of your time however you spend it. Make each and every moment really count,” says Gordon. “Understanding your rhythms and planning and committing to the seasons of your life may not help you achieve perfect work/ life balance. But you will create a life that is more passionate, more productive, and happier in every way.” ∆

his season there are coats for all reasons — from casual ponchos to glamorous faux fur, swing coats. Here are a few of the newest ways to cover up.
Cape This was a runway favorite and one outerwear shape you can dress up or down. Capes and ponchos are also ideal for days when you don’t really need a heavy coat, but you need more than just a sweater. Just make sure that when you do wear this flyaway look, that you stay grounded on the bottom with slim pants or a pencil skirt. Otherwise, your body can easily morph into what I call the “mushroom” effect. Colorful coat Another runway must-have that will instantly transform your entire wardrobe. Coats in bright colors (I love the red ones.) are making a big splash. Bright prints are also livening things up in outerwear. Pair

these coats with a neutral palette like black, gray or camel. You can get away with wearing just about anything underneath this big fashion trend... it will speak for itself. One word of caution: If you do decide to buy one of these new colorful coats, make sure you go for a simple shape like a car coat, princess style or a three-quarter length coat. Too many buckles and bows on one of these will make you feel more like a clown. Military coat We’re in the trenches again, and there are several styles that command attention — from the classic favorites reinvented to more “heavy metal” jackets embellished with all the belts and buckles. The leather look is always an edgy way to put some military might into your wardrobe. Camel coat If you have a closet full of black basics, then this is the new neutral for you. The sophisticated look of the camel coat took the runways by storm in all shapes and sizes. It’s one of the classic style staples and will last you for years. From short jackets to longer wrap styles, this is a coat you can consider an investment piece, since it will complement just about anything in your wardrobe and give you lots of versatile options. Faux fur look If you’re looking for a fun way to put some style into your outerwear wardrobe, then this is your ticket for fall and winter. Be adventurous. Faux fur is flying into stores in lots of variations on the theme — from fuzzy trimmed vests and parkas, to elegant swing coats and wraps. But remember — puffy furs can add extra pounds, so be wary of coats and vests that are thick and bulky. Try them on in the store before you buy them... the furs may have lots of attitude this season, but you want to look for a silhouette that is the most flattering! ∆ The latest silhouette in the shorter camel coat, from Banana Republic. n instant wardrobe changer, this season’s hottest footwear is going to get you headed in the right direction. Step out in chunky platforms, pointy toe flats, ankle booties, loaded loafers, furry heels or T-strap pumps.
This season shoe designers have given us plenty of choices. In fact, much of the latest footwear might even be considered “art to wear sculpture” — so what if they sit perched prettily on a shelf in your closet? However, most of us will definitely want to show off these new styles. Just do your own sole searching and you’ll come up with lots of shoes that will add extraordinary personality to your wardrobe. Start with this list of fall favorites: Think texture It’s all about the mix this year, according to shoe designer Stuart Weitzman. to give his shoes unmistakable fashion flair. Don’t miss the furry heels out there this season...they will add a real shot of glamour to your wardrobe. Ditto for shoes swathed in elegant lace. Think platforms It’s a season of ladylike classics, but shoe designers “pump” up the latest heels with thicker, “block-like” platforms that give the basic shape a sexier silhouette. Watch for sling-back pumps adorned with flirtatious bows to be big hits. Platform loafers and oxfords are also hot. For even more of a trendsetting style, search for platforms in bold colors like the cobalt blue pumps by Vince Camuto. Tres chic! 73

Lisa Armstrong, author of Harper Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to Personal Style, says that what we choose to wear professionally is an opportunity to express our individual style. Here are some guidelines from “Harper Bazaar” for working girls: • As a rule of thumb, the best cues come from your boss. If she’s immaculate, then make time for grooming. If she has a slightly haphazard attitude about her appearance, then a low-key approach, without compromising your own standards, is wise. Don’t sublimate your personality, but develop a complementary style. It is basic modern-business etiquette. • Identifying a uniform, however loosely you end up interpreting it, is a useful exercise because it helps you to concentrate on investment pieces. Do your colleague’s flannel pants and fine-gauge crewnecks ooze relaxed authority? Then think about how you could mirror that in your own way. Maybe it’s with a straight, 62

Tips For Delegating Sarah Welch and Alicia Rockmore

ow many times a day do you utter some version of “How can I get X to do Y?”
It could be as simple as getting your son to take out the garbage, your daughter to clean up her room or your husband to prune the overgrown tree blocking the driveway. But it is a constant source of stress and frustration. What’s a modern woman to do? It’s called effective delegation. It might sound like something taught in an executive workshop (and it often is), but it is the key to keeping your sanity while getting some tasks accomplished. Here are our top 10 tips for effective delegating. Know Thyself Are you the type that tells someone to do something and then scrutinizes and criticizes the whole time? Do you want to delegate, but then feel somehow guilty and think you should do it yourself? You need to do a little soul-searching before you even start.

What’s your Goal? Figure out why you are doing something and not relinquishing control. Are you afraid if you don’t pack your kids’ lunches that the teacher will look down on you? Think about what you are afraid of, then think about how someone else might benefit. Passing the task of making lunch to your kids will give them a sense of responsibility while letting them make their own choices. Plus, Mom will be happier. Divvy It Up Sit down with the family and make a list of all the things that have to get done, then divvy them up. You can assign tasks by skill set or let family members pick, as long as tasks are evenly distributed. Be Clear About Standards After dividing up chores, be clear about how they need to get done. he holiday season conjures up images of twinkling lights, perfectly wrapped presents, and tables laden with delicious holiday dishes. It’s also a time when most people toss their healthy eating habits to the wayside.
By the time the New Year rolls around, the gifts you’ve received aren’t the only things you’ve gained. In fact, it’s become such a common occurrence that the annual holiday weight gain of five to seven pounds is just accepted by most of us. We shrug it off and make resolutions to exercise more and eat better. But it’s a bigger problem than you think — and making a few simple tweaks to your normal routine can make a world of difference. “If you want to get through the holidays without feeling like you’ve totally failed again, making a conscious decision about your lifestyle is the first step,” says Dr. Lavinia Rodriguez, author of Mind Over Fat Matters: Conquering Psychological Barriers to Weight Management Dr. Rodriguez offers six tricks that says will help you avoid packing on the pounds this holiday season: Don’t let worry about weight gain turn into guilt It shouldn’t be simply weight gain people concern themselves with. ings and situations that cause overeating should be your main focus. If you stop thinking so much about gaining weight and start focusing on the feelings that lead to the behavior, you’ll finally be able to stop the cycle. “If you’re obsessing over weight gain, these feelings will ultimately make you more anxious and stressed, which are appetite stimulants,” says Dr. Rodriguez. “Getting in touch with your feelings and recognizing what guilt feels like will help you reason through the situation and eat to feel satisfied, not stuffed.” Have a pre-party plan Recognizing your love of honey-glazed ham and dressing is the first step to waistline recovery! Approaching the holidays with a renewed awareness of your tendency to overindulge is paramount in stopping this behavior. Behaviors don’t change on their own; it’s got to be by design. “Simple tricks like drinking water and eating before the party allow you to make the event more about socializing than snacking,” says Dr. Rodriguez. “Having

consumerism is so ‘70s. There are three golden rules of conscious gift-giving. They are liberating and important to keep in mind if you want to stay in the groove of living a healthier, happier lifestyle:
DON’T ADD TO YOUR DEBT The economic downturn has us all stressed out, so don’t add to your anxiety or your unpaid credit card balance by overspending this holiday season. Set a budget and stick to it, and if your kids whine for more, smile and endure. THINK CONSUMABLES Many of us have too much stuff in our lives already. It’s a waste of your money and your time to load up your loved ones with another mug, a 10th scarf, a 51st keychain. This year, use your imagination to think outside the box. SUITING UP FOR WORK — From Pg. 43 dark skirt, a pretty blouse and a pair of wedge shoes. Perhaps, the office vibe is more iconoclastic. In that case, you’d be amazed how useful a well-cut leather jacket can be. • One fabulously timeless jacket is where the bulk of your investment should go. Find something in a medium or lightweight wool, since you don’t want a jacket that spends most of its office life draped over the back of your chair. A little bit of stretch means the jacket will retain its shape on business trips, and luxe materials will elevate even jeans. • Save the throwaway fashion statements for weekends. Three pairs of pants or three skirts should be enough for starters. Five tops to every skirt or pair of pants you own is plenty. Consider medium-toheavy-weight silk blouses that will look good with or without a jacket. The bow blouse is a big hit this season. • While the dress can be a one-stop
piece, smart separates that can be mixed and matched will provide working girls with many more options. Don’t worry about exact matches, work tonally. Steer away from anything overly eye-popping. Instead of brights, think intense, rich shades. • Once you’ve got the pieces in place, mixing textures is an effective way to achieve a balance of formal and modern. Try, for instance, a tweed jacket with velvet pants or a leather bomber jacket with gabardine pants. They can look exceedingly smart without falling into the deathly trap of boring corporation. • Finish off your tailored work wear with interesting accessories that express your own style personality. Try a sleek and brightly colored handbag instead of the usual black one. Lighten up power suits with a bold necklace or big cuff bracelet. After all, even working girls want to have some fun! ∆

TIPS FOR DELEGATING — From Pg. 44 ging later. For instance, a child may need to be told that bins containing garbage must be taken all the way out to the curb for pickup the next morning — not deposited on the sidewalk a few feet from the curb. Be Clear About Time Lines This may seem self-explanatory, but teenagers (and husbands) often need a little extra guidance. For example, a bed made in the afternoon is not the same as a bed made right before your son heads out the door for school. Whatever the guidelines and deadlines are, be sure to express them. Repeat Remember that game of telephone, where someone starts with a word or phrase and by the time it reaches the last person it’s been turned into something completely different? Set a Context Rather than just barking orders and telling people what to do, explain why you need help and why you think that person is the right one for the job. Negotiate So maybe you really want your daughter to clean up her room every day before she leaves for school. But consider settling for just two or three times a week. Remember that it’s OK to give and take. Let Go Don’t micro-manage. If you aren’t doing a task but it still gets done, resist the urge to tell the person what they’ve done wrong. Positive Feedback It’s OK to set consequences if something doesn’t get done (i.e., taking away toys if chores aren’t finished), but when something is done, make sure you notice it and pay special attention. f you’re seeking employment or looking to take that next step in your career, the holiday season is the perfect time to get closer to your goal.
Focus less on the open bar and those trays of tempting hors d’oeuvres and more on maximizing holiday events to make connections that will land you that great new job. “The holidays mean plenty of opportunities to meet new and interesting people,” says Maribeth Kuzmeski, author of ...And the Clients Went Wild! How Savvy Professionals Win All the Business They Want. “There’s no other time of the year when you’ll have so many events to attend that also translate to more opportunities to network! If you go into them armed and ready to make the most of your time with every holiday well-wisher you encounter, you just might walk away with a ton of new job contacts and maybe even an interview.” “Great networkers are capable of leaving something behind with everyone they encounter — a thought, a memory, or a connection,” she adds. “This is exactly what you need to do if you are in the job market this holiday season. You need to make strong connections, become a relationship builder. You want to be the first person who comes to mind when someone in your network hears about a great job opening.” Kuzmeski offers advice for how you can network your way to a great new job this holiday season:
65

if you have to go, have a plan Formulate a plan of action ahead of time that will help you make the most of every event. Doing so will ensure that you make all the right connections, and it will help to alleviate all that pre-party social anxiety. “First, think about which contacts are the most important to you—maybe the HR rep for a company you’ve been eying is there or maybe there are a few people you want to ask about possible openings at their companies—and make a point to speak to each of them during the event,” says Kuzmeski. “Find out who will be attending the event. Do some research online or on social networking sites like LinkedIn to learn about attendees. You may even want to consider asking the host for a guest list. Pick five people with whom you definitely want to speak while you are there, and don’t avoid the big names. Make sure you challenge yourself by making an effort to connect with at least one top dog.”
is always a good idea to avoid topics that can lead to contentious conversations, e.g., religion, politics, etc.) Once the conversation is flowing freely, then you can move on to the questions that might help you land the new job: How did your company do this year? I heard you have a great (fill in your expertise) department. Do you think you will be expanding any time soon? What’s your biggest challenge? (After you hear the answer to this one, if you can, describe how you might be able to help this new contact overcome his challenge.) “After he answers you, it’s always a good idea to follow up with a secondary question that encourages him to tell you more,” Kuzmeski adds. “The more he talks and you listen, the more he will like you because you are showing genuine interest in him. Pretty soon, he will be asking you questions, and a valuable business connection will have been made!”
Let them do the talking. (You ask the questions!) There’s nothing worse than coming away from a great networking opportunity realizing that you never got to the point. For example, maybe you learned a big-time CEO’s favorite basketball team, but you have no idea if he is planning on hiring in the new year. As you work the crowds this holiday season, be sure to have more in your arsenal than small talk. Kuzmeski suggests coming up with a list of questions to use on your fellow holiday party guests. Here are a few great ice breakers to get the ball rolling: Where will you be spending the holidays? Where did you grow up? Do you still have family there? How are your kids? What are they up to this holiday season? What do you think about...? (Complete this question with something from current events, your town or city’s local news, or a recent event in your industry. Remember, it
Be prepared to pitch yourself in fifteen seconds
November - December 2011
It’s no doubt that you have a lot of qualifications and experience. So much that you could probably go on for hours about yourself. But the harsh reality is that no one (except for your mom!) wants to hear that much about your accomplishments. Kuzmeski says that when you’re meeting new people you should resist the urge to start presenting your résumé word-for-word. Instead, prepare a short, fifteen-second elevator pitch that hits on your career high points and top skills. Think about what’s unique about what you have done and what will stand out in a room full of people who are also talking about themselves. Be sure that whomever you speak with will still remember you at the end of the night. “The key to an effective pitch is keeping it short while still including your biggest wins,” Kuzmeski explains. Once you have their attention, the door is open for you to tell more about yourself, find out more about them, and start connecting your way to a new job.”
66
The party may end, but your connection shouldn’t If you’re meeting tons of people at parties, it can be hard to keep track of what you told to whom, who gave you what advice, and whom you agreed to meet with to discuss your qualifications next Monday. Following an event, be proactive. Spend ten minutes cementing your connections by creating a database that allows you to keep track of all the connections you’ve made. Include reminders to yourself of interesting or remarkable things that people said or that you learned so that you won’t forget them and can refer back to them in later conversations. And be sure to use social media to keep in touch. “Use LinkedIn or other social networking tools to invite your new contacts to connect with you,” Kuzmeski says. “Share something the person said to you at the event that you really enjoyed or remind her of a connection point you made. (For example, if you discovered you both like the same sports team, you might say, ‘Let’s hope the So-and-Sos get a win this weekend!’). If you can, send her something that shows you care about her business. It might be an article about her industry or even a referral for someone you know would benefit from that company’s help. Whatever it is, create a course of action that will help you further connect with these important individuals. Soon, they will be seeking you out because you’ve piqued their interest with the impression you have made!” Remember, who they know matters too Some of the people you’ll meet will have direct connections to companies you want to work for, but many others will not. Remember, just because “Sam,” who manages a small widget-making factory, isn’t going to hire you, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a brother-in-law who happens to have a best friend who works at a software company that’s hiring. “The focus of networking should not be
on gaining an immediate job offer from the people you network with,” says Kuzmeski. “In fact, that tactic almost never works. The goal should, instead, be to build a mutually beneficial relationship with someone who may never even be able to give you a job, but might know someone who can. When you start a conversation with someone, commit. Follow it to its conclusion and you never know what you will find out. Giving up on someone just because you don’t think he can help you is the absolute opposite of being a master connector.” Even family functions are networking opportunities Sometimes the most obvious connections are the ones most easily ignored. Just because a holiday event happens to be a mandatory family meal doesn’t mean there’s no opportunity for networking. “Think about the people close to you, who might have huge networks of their own,” says Kuzmeski. “For example, maybe your mom is or used to be a teacher. She’s had contact with tons of parents over the years who just might be working at a company that could hire you. Or maybe your best friend is in a completely different industry from you, but he has a huge network of friends on Facebook. Maybe your sister-in-law has a client who told her he is desperate for help. You never know how a great opportunity will present itself. Don’t count anyone out of your networking efforts, especially those who are the closest to you and therefore the most willing to help.” Give yourself the gift of a professional organization membership If you’ve been avoiding joining the association of your profession, there is no better time to make the move than the holidays. What better way to find a job doing what you love to do than by joining a group of like-minded professionals whose employers just might be hiring? “In order to meet people within 72

f you’ve ever been stuck at the dreaded “kids’ table” at Thanksgiving or been seated at a rickety card table stuck in to expand the main table, you know how important it is to have a dining room table that can welcome the entire family.
If you are considering inviting a new dining room table to dinner this year, here are a few tips to help you select one that’s as wonderful as the friends and family who will gather around it. FOCUS ON FUNCTION First, define what you need in a table. Is your dining room formal or casual? What shape is the room? How many people do you want to seat? Will you need space on the table for serving dishes, or do you prefer to prepare guests’ plates in the kitchen or serve off a buffet? START AT THE TOP Next, decide what shape will work best for your space and lifestyle. If you have a long, narrow room, you might like a rectangle top. There have always been scads of gorgeous formal rectangle tables to choose from, but now the selection of informal rectangle tables is getting better. I like the new farm tables that are so popular today because they are not only perfect for family mealtimes, but they can 73

Prepared otion Sickness
Rallie McAllister, M.D.
Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information regarding movement from the eyes, the body and the inner ear. Motion sensors in your joints and tendons help your brain keep track of your body’s movement, while a sensitive network of fluid-filled sacs and canals in your inner ear make it possible for you to maintain your balance. Reading a book in a moving vehicle is a common cause of motion sickness. While the eyes are focused on the unmoving page of the book, the inner ear senses the car’s movement, and conflicting information is transmitted to the brain. Messages from the motion sensors in joints and tendons throughout the body add to the confusion, and the befuddled brain may retaliate by inducing nausea. Although nausea and vomiting are the hallmarks of motion sickness, yawning, sweating, hyperventilating and an urge to urinate may also occur. Research suggests that there may be a psychological component to the condition. Some unfortunate individuals experience the signs and symptoms of motion sickness when they do nothing more than think about traveling. If you’re susceptible to motion sickness, you can take steps to prevent it when you
travel. Strategically choosing your seat in any moving vehicle is essential. The seat you’ll want is the most stable one. If you’re traveling by car, this means the driver’s seat. Drivers are much less prone to motion sickness than their passengers. If you must be a passenger, make sure you call shotgun as soon as possible. If you’re planning to go on a cruise, it may be helpful to stay in a cabin in the front or the middle of the ship, or one on the upper deck. If you’re flying, make your reservations early and request a seat over the front edge of one of the plane’s wings. If you’re traveling by train, your best bet is to choose a forward-facing window seat near the front. Regardless of your mode of transportation, try to sit in a reclined position with your head resting comfortably against a seat back. Before you set out on your journey, eat a small, low-fat meal, and then snack lightly every couple of hours if you can. Since alcohol and nicotine can contribute to dizziness and an upset stomach, you may want to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking before and during travel. Strong scents or unpleasant odors can increase the likelihood that you’ll feel queasy,

so ask your travel companion to go easy on the cologne. Anxiety tends to make motion sickness worse, so try to relax. If these preventive measures don’t help, you may benefit from an over-the-counter remedy for motion sickness. Most contain antihistamines and work best when taken 30 minutes to an hour before your trip. These medications can make you feel drowsy, which may be a desirable side effect, especially if you plan to sleep through your motion-induced misery. If you need to stay alert during your travels, antihistamines may not be the best option. If your motion sickness is unfazed by over-the-counter agents, your physician may prescribe the drug scopolamine. Available in the form of a patch, it works best when applied behind the ear about eight hours before travel. The effects of the patch typically last about three days. Potential side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision and
difficulty urinating. If you prefer to fight motion sickness naturally, you can try taking ginger root capsules, candy or tea. Scientific evidence suggests that ginger root is a safe and effective remedy for reducing nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness. For some folks with the condition, acupressure may be effective. Asking your travel companion to apply pressure to the inside of your wrist may help reduce nausea. If your travel companion won’t cooperate, you can buy specially designed wristbands that will. The bands feature knobs that apply gentle pressure to acupressure points in your wrists, which may help alleviate symptoms of motion sickness. If all forms of prevention fail, all you can do is prepare yourself for the inevitable. Arm yourself with a supply of sturdy motion sickness bags whenever you travel, and hold on for the ride. ∆

THE SEASON’S HOTTEST SHOE TRENDS — From Pg. 40 Think luxe loafers Yes, you can come down off your platforms and slip into some comfortable flats. But don’t think these new loafers are dull and boring... they’re loaded with ornate crests like the ones at Ralph Lauren or great animal prints like the ones at 3.1 Phillip Lim. Look for a pair of pointy-toe flats to really give your wardrobe a new edge. Think softer shades Footwear designers are making us all blush with softer colors that mimic the pale shades found on the runways. Think subtle hues of rose, pale pink and nude neutrals. Check out Michael Kors suede blushing booties.
Think ankle booties Whether they’re flat and rugged in tough leather, or they’re mod with a touch of ‘60s Beatles rocker style, ankle booties this fall are great to pair with leggings or wear by themselves with short or long mid-length skirts. Higher heeled ankle boots with pointed toes or wedge heels lend more of a sophisticated polish to fall outfits. Think knee-high boots The stacked heel, knee-high boot gives any wardrobe a power surge of stylish energy. Wear them with fitted pencil skirts to add a fresh spin to your ensembles. For a more relaxed look, pull on a pair of flat knee-high boots — perfect with a chiffon dress or wool skirt and denim jacket. ∆

LOOK AT THE LEGS Look for table legs that work well for the size of gatherings you have typically. Lots of people opt for pedestal tables, where the tabletop is supported by pedestals fixed to the table’s center, so no one gets stuck sitting by a cumbersome table leg. The trestle leg is also a very popular pick. As with a pedestal table, supports fit in the center of the table, but then are connected by a horizontal stretcher. At once rustic and modern, the trestle table is a great pick if you want a beefier piece
PICK A SEAT While I’m a big fan of matching dining sets, I also love to mix it up, wedding dissimilar chairs and tables. For example, try surrounding your table with benches, either with a high back or no back at all. For a luxurious look, use upholstered wingback chairs. If your style is casual, try wicker armcha rs or armless banana-leaf chairs. If you have large dinner parties, invest in some ballroom chairs that will allow you to squeeze in more friends. ∆

hat keeps you from exercising more? You know you should. Exercise prevents heart disease, hypertension and diabetes, and is your best friend when it comes to living a healthier, happier lifestyle.
Let me guess your excuse: too busy! It’s the No. 1 excuse in America. As your personal trainer, I advise you to please wise up. Not having enough time to work some physical activity into your day — walk the stairs, bike to the store, do a few yoga poses before lunch — is the lamest of excuses. Make exercise a priority, and you’ll find the time. You’ll walk at dawn, you’ll replace happy hour with Zumba classes, you’ll spend fewer hours on the giant time suck known as Facebook. When you discover how terrific exercise makes you feel, how it adds joy to your life and life to your years, you’ll make the time. So what else might be holding you back from getting fit? Maybe it’s fear.
November - December 2011
Upward of 50 percent of people drop out of fitness programs within the first six months. Sport psychologists and other researchers who’ve interviewed the dropouts have uncovered the fear factor. People fear that they can’t do the exercises correctly. They fear that they look stupid doing them. They fear that people are standing around judging them. So let’s look at those fears head-on and explore ways to deal with them: FEAR OF DOING IT WRONG This is a reasonable fear because it’s painfully true that if you don’t learn the correct way to hit a ball, or lift a weight, or do warrior pose, you can create injuries. So learn! Take classes, read a book, work with a good teacher or trainer. 82

outheastern Alaska is a land of water and ice, an ever-changing natural masterpiece. Once a solitary landscape of infinite wilderness, today’s coastal Alaska is a vibrant destination, beckoning cruisers from all over the world.
We recently visited this enchanted land aboard the Radiance of the Seas, a beautiful Royal Caribbean ship. The seven day cruise started in Vancouver, continued through the Inside Passage and stopped in picturesque Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, and Skagway. It culminated in Glacier Bay, home to the spectacular Hubbard Glacier. The Ship The recently refurbished Radiance of the Seas is built with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, retractable roof, huge windows, and glass elevators, allowing passengers the best views of the magnificent scenery. The heart of the ship is a stunning nine-story atrium called the Centrum. From the soaring Centrum guests can access all public venues: dining rooms and specialty restaurants, casino, shops, lounges, outdoor pool, an enclosed solarium with a heated pool, spa, sports decks and the theater. The decor is airy, elegant and understated, accented with fine art and fresh flower arrangements. The staterooms are spacious and well designed, appointed with built-in closets, a flat screen TV, stocked mini-bar, and a bathroom with a stall shower.

Dining The most popular dining venue is the Windjammer Café, serving buffet style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The dining room is set with “island style” food stations that efficiently serves over 2,000 passengers. The food is fresh and delicious: plenty of appetizing salads, assorted freshly baked breads and rolls, and hot choices from Indian entrees to “meat and potato” dishes. There are daily specials and perennial favorites such as pastas and pizzas. Huge dessert tables, ice cream selections, coffee, teas, and cold drinks complete the meal. Wines and alcoholic beverages are available for a fee. The main dining room, Cascades, offers elegant and relaxed a la carte dining. It features two nightly seatings and flexible dining hours, called “my time” dining. Additional choices include the Park Café serving light fare in the solarium, Boardwalk Doghouse for specialty hot dogs, room service and, for an additional charge, several theme restaurants. Enjoy succulent prime steaks in the elegant Chops Grille, order a delicious cioppino and rack of lamb at Giovanni’s Table, or try sushi and seafood cooked on a hot stone at Izumi. You can also try Samba Brazilian Grill and Rita’s Cantina (Mexican). The top culinary experience on board is the Chef’s Table, an intimate dinner for up to 16 guests featuring a 3 hour, multi course feast paired with fine wines ($95 per person). Before every course, the chef describes the lengthy preparation process of the dish, and the sommelier introduces his specially selected wine. Our meal started with a superb lobster and Alaskan king crab salad, followed by a soup trio of different colors and textures including a sublime porcini mushroom soup with truffle oil. Next came a duck roll in a crispy crepe tempura, followed by a lamb cutlet cooked to perfection and served with potato risotto and port wine glaze. We concluded with a pecan-apple torte with green apple gelato. Excellent wines completed the experience. The ship also features a Concierge Club, 78
accessible only to suite residents and to specially qualified repeat passengers. In the club you can enjoy cappuccino, espresso, continental breakfast, and pre-dinner cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres. You can also take advantage of the concierge service for reservations and travel arrangements. Activities Guests are issued a daily planner to help navigate the myriad of activities on board: Wall climbing, mini golf tournaments, basketball and volleyball, tennis, health and fitness lectures and numerous workshops. When you’re looking for an activity, just stop by any of the oversized touchscreen TVs and tap “what to do now” for an instant list. In order to accommodate the large number of passengers there are several activities at the same time. For example at 4pm on Day 3 the activities included a martini clinic, a wrinkle removing seminar, a Beach Boys concert on the big screen, a Harry Potter movie, a family animation trivia game, open rock climbing, and a port lecture. You can also get pampered at the spa, relax with a cocktail at a bar, read a book in the library, surf the internet, or sip a specialty coffee. On sea days and at night you can also browse the duty-free boutiques or try your luck in the casino. Multitask to the extreme, or just find a deck chair and let the world pass by. Entertainment The Aurora Theater features nightly shows including production numbers by the talented onboard ensemble, as well as guest appearances by top headliners. The fun continues into the wee hours... Dance music, piano bar, big band, a trio playing oldies, a one man band in the pub, a classical guitar player, movies, and a pulsating disco. The cruise staff also keeps the guests busy with quizzes, bingo, trivia games, and other activities.

When gold was found in the icy wilderness, the town became the starting point of an arduous journey towards the “golden” North. Today Skagway still looks like a frontier town with wooden sidewalks and colorful clapboard buildings with shops, galleries and bars. One of the best shore excursions is the White Pass & Yucon Route train ride along some of the harrowing trails used by gold prospectors. A designated Civil Engineering landmark, the rail climbs nearly 3,000 feet offering spectacular views of snow capped mountains, cascading waterfalls, and rivers foaming with glacial silt. Hubbard Glacier The highlight of the cruise is the sail through Glacier Bay, home to Hubbard Glacier, a 6 mile wide wall of ice rising high above the sea. As the ship crawls slowly through the iceberg sprinkled waters, guests wait patiently for “calvings.” It is an awesome spectacle of giant ice slabs detaching with a thundering boom from the glacier’s wall and plunging into the ocean with a giant splash. The captain rotates the ship so all passengers can have a direct view of the unfolding displays. As we return to the open waters we pass along infinite ranges of soaring white mountains silhouetted against the blue sky. The elegant Radiance of the Seas and the stunning Alaskan scenery are the perfect ingredients for a great vacation. ∆

When you start imagining that others are watching you critically, simply come back to the sound of your own breathing. Focus on your performance, your own body, your relaxation.
