Having High Self-Esteem Is Essential To Good Health

D

o you feel good about yourself? Do you compare yourself favorably to others? If you answered “no,” your health could be at risk.

A large study by the MacArthur Foundation found that high self-esteem is a powerful predictor of health and longevity. If you don’t feel good about yourself today, you likely will not fare as well as someone who has high selfworth and a positive attitude. People with high self-esteem are confident of success, feel loved and are content with themselves and their lives (and not coincidentally, they usually have a good body im age). Conversely, people with low self-esteem often have a negative self-image, find themselves September-October 2009

unattractive, lack confidence and could be described as shy. A poor self-image relates negative thoughts about yourself - always feeling like a failure or unlovable. But the picture of a person with low self-esteem varies greatly. Not always the classic “shrinking violet,” people with low self-esteem are often workaholics and highly competitive. Underneath a strong exterior, a person with low self-esteem is extremely critical of himself. Low self-esteem often contributes to dysfunctional relationships and destructive behaviors. In extreme cases, people with low self-esteem do not take care of themselves, have few friends and are often alone. Research shows that an individual’s self-esteem is largely determined during childhood. Children who are loved and supported by their families often have high self-esteem. On the other hand, children who are criticized, neglected or abused by their loved ones often exhibit low self-esteem later in life. Children also are affected by the school environment - doing poorly in class or being taunted and bullied by classmates. Of course, self-esteem is affected throughout one’s life. As an adult, self-esteem can be damaged severely by a bad relationship, a difficult work environment and being physically or emotionally abused. Loss of trust can be particularly damaging. In any form, low self-esteem can have a major impact on your health. In addition to affecting how you age, it leads to stress and

increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Low self-esteem can be associated with nutritional disorders including morbid obesity, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. It is also an important cause of depression. It is associated with a much higher risk of suicide and addictive behaviors including alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, compulsive spending and promiscuity. Low self-esteem also may be the root cause of criminal behavior including burglary, violent crime, sexual assault and whitecollar crime. Many psychiatrists and behavioral specialists believe that low self-esteem has all the hallmarks of a life-threatening disease. It is similar to depression, anxiety and heart disease – all conditions that an individual cannot control necessarily. Just like many behavioral disorders, low self-esteem has causes, symptoms and signs, a natural history and serious consequences that could prove fatal. It is imminently treatable, and positive treatment can greatly affect the quantity and quality of life. Low self-esteem is not a narrow issue. It can affect individuals across the spectrum, regardless of age, ethnicity, sex or socioeconomic status. If you think you have low self-esteem, consider a screening test to gauge your situation. There are numerous screening tests for low self-esteem available on the Internet. A good site is www. queendom.com. If you feel this is a problem for 86

Investing For College By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

W

hen times are tough it’s easy to lose faith in the potential of the financial markets. I recently got a letter from someone wondering about the wisdom of 529 accounts for her kids given “the downward slide of the market.” She was considering staying in cash or investing in Treasuries. I understand investor fear and the reluctance to commit new money to the stock market given recent declines. But I also believe that what’s going on in the markets today doesn’t change the utility of 529 accounts for most investors.

529s: The Basics First, realize that 529s are simply taxadvantaged accounts designed to encourage people to save for a child’s college education. Their power lies primarily in the fact that they offer tax-deferred growth; 21

Hi Class Living

in fact, all investment income generated in the account is tax-free as long as the proceeds are used for “qualified education expenses” (tuition, room and board, books and other expenses; the full details can be found in IRS Publication 970 at http:// www.irs.gov). The risk of a 529 lies not in the account structure but the investments it contains – which I’ll discuss in more detail below. Before you choose investments, though, you have to choose between two types of 529 plans: prepaid and savings. Prepaid plans allow you to pay future tuition at today’s prices. Since higher education costs have been rising faster than inflation, this sounds like a good deal, but they’re difficult to recommend. Most prepaid plans lock you into your state’s public system of higher education (or even into a specific college), and they generally don’t cover ancillary expenses. Savings plans are much more flexible. You choose how to invest the funds in a small spectrum of investment opportunities, and you can use the proceeds for qualified higher education expenses at any accredited college or university. The tax deferral makes 529 plans much more attractive than keeping an equivalent amount of money in your own name or a custodial account. (And be sure to check to see if you qualify for a state tax benefit in addition to the federal deduction by investing in your state’s plan.) But there’s another benefit: 529 plan assets are considered assets of the parents, not the child, when it comes to financial aid. Assets of the child – like a custodial account – are “taxed” more heavily when aid decisions are being made. Moreover, parents can put quite a lot of money into 529 accounts without triggering gift taxes: up to $65,000 over five years (or $130,000 for a married couple) and up to $300,000 in total in some states. The 529 assets can be transferred to other children or relatives without penalty. And they’re not just for parents; anyone can open a 529 plan for a child (listen up, grandparents!). September-October 2009

Investment Choices So I think a strong case can be made for using the 529 plans as a tool for college savings. The real question for the woman who wrote to me is how aggressive to be with the money. Sure, it’s hard to plow money into a fund or funds when the markets have declined (though that could ultimately be a good thing: buying stocks when prices are down). But long-term investors need to keep their time horizon in mind. If her kids were only a few years from matriculation, I would suggest conservative investments. But if they’re quite young, I’d suggest a more aggressive approach. Just as you would do with any other account, you have to balance risk and reward, making adjustments as you approach your investment goal. (And always realize that like any investment, it’s possible to lose money by investing in a 529 plan.) Many 529 plan sponsors have made this relatively simple with target funds that are pegged to a specific year or age. You pick the fund that corresponds roughly to the year your child will enter college, and the fund managers periodically reallocate the assets to get more conservative as college approaches. Although it’s always a good idea to monitor the fund’s performance, the plan sponsor does a lot of the heavy lifting for you – and it helps take any emotion out of the process. Alternatively, you can generally pick from a selection of portfolios that match your risk tolerance – ranging from conservative to aggressive. Always make sure you understand the rules for switching among the portfolios offered; some plans limit the number of changes you can make. The Fine Print Before investing in a 529 plan, always carefully consider the plan’s investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses, which can be found in the plan’s agreement. Plan details do vary from state to state, or even plan to plan. 86

Is A Secret Spoiling Your Life? By Jan Denise

N

o matter how horrible your secret, keeping it is more destructive than the secret itself; and sharing it will break its hold on you.

When you decide you have something to be ashamed of, you embrace shame. Even if you forget exactly what you’re ashamed of, you still feel the shame; and as long as you do, you forego self-esteem. And according to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, until you have met your need for self-esteem, you can’t move on to meet your need for self-actualization, or your need to live a rich and meaningful life. That’s why you can become rich and powerful, and still feel unfulfilled. So, tell your secrets, spill your secrets, and you spill your shame, your guilt and your regret. September-October 2009

Well-meaning people may suggest you keep a secret for fear somebody uses it against you. When you keep a secret, you are certain to use it against yourself. In letting go of a secret, you also let go of the belief that there is something to hide. When you expose it, what used to seem dark and dirty seems human. You relieve the pressure, come out of the closet into the light, purge the pain with tears. You begin to heal. Your life is more important than the secret that keeps you from it. While that may sound melodramatic, how much life do you really have without self- 87

Preserving Cut Flowers Kathie Bond-Borie

F

resh flowers have the power to lift our spirits. Even a tiny vase of pansies can dress up a windowsill. To get the most life out of our cut flowers, it’s important to cut them at the right time and treat them with care. Here are some tips for prolonging the life of your flowers.

Cut flowers Cut garden flowers in the morning before the dew has dried, or in the early evening. With flower scissors or sharp pruners, snip above a node or dormant bud to spur new blooms on the plants, making the stems as long as you like. Cutting the stems shorter will allow faster growth of new buds. Put stems in a pail of lukewarm water as you cut them. Certain types of flowers (including celosia, sunflower and poppy) benefit from scalding the stem ends in boiling water for 20 seconds or over a candle flame to stop nutrient-rich sap from oozing. When purchasing cut flowers, get them September-October 2009

home into water as soon as possible. Ask the florist for water reservoirs for the stems if you can’t get home quickly. Recut stems Before you place flowers into water at home, recut stems on a slant to aid water absorption. Ideally, stems should be cut under water to prevent air bubbles from blocking the update of water, and then inserted directly into water. This is especially helpful with roses. To prevent decay, remove all leaves below the water line.

28

Condition flowers Set flowers in lukewarm water in a cool,

dark place for several hours to condition them before arranging. Arrange flowers Arrange flowers in a vase of warm (1100 F) water. To prolong the blooms, keep the vase out of direct sunlight in a wellventilated, cool location. Even moving the vase into a cool spot only at night will help. Don’t place flowers near the fruit bowl because fruits produce ethylene gas that can speed aging of the flowers. Add water Freshly cut flowers have enough stored sugars to survive for a few days in a vase,

but floral preservatives can help them last longer. You can make your own using equal parts 7-Up and water, with 1/2 teaspoon household bleach added. The sugar provides energy, and the bleach inhibits bacterial growth. Change water Change vase water every couple of days. In mixed bouquets, some flowers, such as daffodils, may exude sap that shortens the vase life of other flowers, so refreshing the water frequently is important. Or better yet, keep these flowers in a vase by themselves. For more tips and garden information visit www.garden.org. ∆

Hosting Eco-Chic

I

f you’re interested in wedding, simply start by reception at the same all that driving

If you are taking your vows at a religious venue, find a reception venue within a mile or two of the ceremony – or better yet, one you can all walk to. Green weddings are a huge trend, so here are five ideas for hosting a more eco-chic wedding: 1. Go Local If your venue allows you to bring your own alcohol, bring locally brewed beers and locally grown wines. This cuts out the shipping emissions and supports local businesses. Don’t be afraid to haggle with these businesses, either. They will get exposure to everyone at the wedding, so use that to your advantage when negotiating prices. 2. Go Natural Many flowers in floral arrangements are

shipped all the way from South America, Asia and Europe, so the pollution impact from the shipping is high. In addition, you have no way of knowing what kind of environmentally harmful chemicals are used on the flowers. Instead, use flowers that are in season and grown naturally in your area. For example, if you live in the South, pick magnolia flowers from local trees and float the blossoms in vases on tables for centerpieces. Wildflowers from a friend’s garden can also add a unique, personal and beautifully natural touch to your wedding. If you want a more structured look, do an Internet search for “organic florist” in your region. 3. Favors, Favors Favors are a nice touch to any wedding, but they usually just get shoved in a closet

Take the other $800 you would’ve spent on favors and donate it to a local or national forest, a save-the-animals foundation or some other organization. 4. Send E-vites This tip may be shockingly unconventional, but sending electronic invitations will save a great deal of paper. This will also keep more money in your pocket. If you have relatives or friends who don’t use e-mail, make your own simple invitations to send to those few people. Also create an online wedding Web site where you can feature your wedding style as well as maps to venues, menus, photos, etc. This will be a perfect electronic touch to your eco- 86

f you’re just raring to slip out of those flip-flops and into your ankle boots, then it’s time to put on your comfy ballet flats and get ahead of fall’s fashion game. It’s not too soon to start scouting out the newest fashion trends.

Here are some ways to fast forward into fall:

chains. To soften up the tough look, add a delicate printed blouse.

Focus on the shoulder The broad-shouldered power jackets of the ‘80s are back. From dramatic coats to blouses, think about “broadening” your horizons with this new proportion. Just remember to keep it narrow on the bottom! Or you can go for the cold shoulder -- in one-shoulder asymmetrical tops and dresses.

Pencil it in The pencil skirt is a classic that is always a good investment. Whether you’re dressing it up with a power jacket for the corporate world by day or dressing it down with a leather motorcycle jacket for night, this hourglass basic is not just for secretaries.

Try something in leather This is chic for tough and not-so-tough chicks. Everything from military jackets to biker boots to slim pants, long gloves and even shorts are hitting the streets in luxe leather looks, decorated with studs and

Stick to the sheath You may not have Michelle Obama’s toned arms, but you can still pull this classic off with style. The cocktail sheath has lots of interesting details this fall. Just follow the first lady’s lead by adding a cardigan or, better yet, one of fall’s 87

here is no magic diet, pill, exercise machine or drink that will make you lose 10 pounds instantly, but you certainly can appear 10 pounds thinner. All it takes is a few fashion fixes, some minor makeup maneuvers and a bit of precision posture.

Pull those abs in; push those shoulders back. It might sound like something Jane Fonda would have said circa 1982, but don’t laugh. “You will feel 10 pounds lighter if you start with honoring your spine and working inside out,” said fashion stylist Desiree Dawn Kuhn. WATCH THE HAIR Sloppy eyebrows and big hairdos add visual weight. Cleaner lines have a thinner appearance, which is why keeping your brows and hair trimmed and neat will slim the face. Hairstyles that cut off right at or just below the chin add visual weight, while very short or long hair extends the line of vision. Also, pulling hair back into a ponytail has a slimming effect.

GO FOR LOW AND LONG “The ideal position for pants and jeans is below your natural waist,” said boutique owner Nicki Starr. “This creates a longer and leaner look, and creates proportion of the torso and lower body.” She also recommends flare or boot-cut pants with an overall dark, tonal color. “The darkness of the denim coupled with either a boot or flare cut creates a vertical line,” Starr said. “Go long on the denim, too. The longer the jean, the leaner the look.” Of course, these long jeans must be paired with a pair of high heels in order

to reap the rewards.

CHANNEL YOUR DARKER SIDE

Black works magic on your figure by concealing those areas you’d prefer to keep inconspicuous. If wearing all black isn’t your thing, try pairing black pants with a dark purple or charcoal gray top. While black is the most slimming color, dark hues in general will camouflage those problem areas.

Clothing Sportswear Accessories

HAIL HEELS According to Krupp, wearing heels is one of the simplest things a woman can do to look thinner. “Heels elongate the leg and give you a longer look in general,” she said. Longer gives the illusion of leaner. Wear medium to high heels for maximum effect. If you’re used to wearing flats, take a baby step and put on a pair of kitten heels, which are stiletto heels that are an inch or less in height. Any lift is better than none. ∆

Back To School Teen Idols

S

hopping for back-to-school clothes can suck the cash right out of the family budget.

But even if teens want to dress like their favorite movie-star vampires, they can still find bargains that won’t drain their wallets, according to wardrobe stylist Art Conn, who has worked his fashion magic on TV’s popular “American Idol” series. When teens are in school, you can bet that they will be dressing similar to their favorite Gossip Girl or Jonas Brother or maybe even Edward and Bella from “Twilight.” Kids are sure to make their own kind of fashion music, no matter whom they “America Idol” stylist Art Conn picked his favorite items from Marshalls based on the hottest teen idols and TV shows, such as “Gossip Girl,” The Jonas Brothers and Edward and Bella from “Twilight.” Photo courtesy of Marshalls. choose as their favorite idol or vampire. “The music world is all about collaboration and mixing two genres (rap and pop for example) to create a new sound,” notes Conn. “It’s no different with fashion. Mixing grunge plaid and ‘80s inspired leggings then makes perfect sense.” The trick is to mix it all up. “It’s so easy to incorporate a few things from all the hot trends and put them into one hot look,” he says. “Grab some torn jeans and layer them over some neon leggings. Throw on a shrunken blazer over a buffalo plaid blouse to create a unique and uptown look. Wear a leather jacket over a great graphic tee and distressed jeans to look hip and cool.” So, what items will the hottest teen “idols” be wearing this fall? Take it from the top acts in show business. The “Gossip Girl” characters keep their young and fresh approach to fashion by blending trends and creating new ones. Plaid is a big influence on the fashionable show and makes style news in blouses, short skirts and handbags. The trendsetting girls pair their plaids with shrunken blazers and tight jeans to be creative with proportions and silhouettes. Hair accessories like metallic leather headbands and small bright flowers bring in a bit of the boho, yet uptown, feel. The Jonas Brothers have single-handedly brought the skinny jean to every boy in America, according to Conn. They pair their denim -- in indigo and in a wide array of hues -- with graphic tees and jackets to push the rocker trend, which is a strong influence this back-to-school season. They also like the plaid shirts that they can pair

with a leather jacket to give the feel of hip yet casual. Putting a vest over a graphic tee makes a great fashion statement whether on stage or in the classroom. Throw on a pair of Converse sneakers -- in just about any color -- to make your outfit cool and fun, just like the Jonas Brothers. The Pacific Northwestern setting for “Twilight,” the popular vampire movie and book series, really dictates the characters’ style and fashion sense. Again, plaid plays a role in making the clothes look “touchable and moody,” says Conn. Plaid shirts or graphic tees worn under a hoody with some cotton dress pants and Converse sneakers really “vamps” up anyone’s look. Think leather jackets, vests and hoodies for school must-haves. “Oh and don’t forget that messy hair,” adds the “American Idol” fashion adviser. “Skinny jeans are still in heavy rotation and can be paired with any trend -- bohemian, uptown, rocker -- to make you look like a star.” Button-down shirts taken directly from the dryer and thrown on over a graphic tee will give that casual and cool vibe in which any modern vampire can really sink his teeth.

Hair At Home

Y

ou don’t have to have the big bucks of a celebrity to have movie-star style, according to Robert Vetica, hairstylist extraordinaire.

Based in Los Angeles, Vetica has been the “mane man” to dozens of A-list clients: Salma Hayek, Debra Messing, Avril Lavigne, Reese Witherspoon ... and who can forget Renee Zellweger’s “Veronica Lake” hair in that yellow vintage dress at the Oscars? Although he is a premier Hollywood stylist, Vetica’s philosophy about having great hair is to keep things “simple, simple, simple.” In his new book, “Good to Great Hair”, the celebrity stylist does not offer an airbrushed version of haute coiffure. His tips provide all of us with uncomplicated basics. Here are some of Vetica’s tips when it comes to achieving great hair: • Ease up on the shampoos and styling products that dry hair out when washed every day. “Ever wonder why European women, or Asian women have such amazingly healthy-looking hair?” he asks. “They do not wash their hair every day.” Instead, Vetica recommends just wetting hair and giving it a good rinse with water in between shampoos. “Hair maintains its proper pH better when you don’t shampoo as often,” he says. “Really, ladies, try it my way for a while. Less is more, even when it

comes to your hair. Start out by using fewer products and tell me if, after a few months, your hair isn’t in better shape.” • Choose a “leave-in” product instead of a daily moisturizing conditioner. “Leave-in conditioners have become my best friends,” admits Vetica. “You will be amazed at the results. When applying any product, always start with smaller amounts. Less is more with hair products. If you need to, you can always add more later.” • Attempt a dry shampoo, Vetica’s “favorite product of all time.” “It’s amazing,” he says, and recommends using the product in a colored aerosol form. “As we all know,” he says, “your hair starts to lose its style as the day goes on. Take the dry shampoo and give your head a good once-over, leave it for a few minutes to let it absorb all the oils from the day, then give it a good brush-through. You will be amazed at the results.” Dry shampoo can also cover gray temporarily and give hair texture at the roots when having extensions applied. • Try before you buy. “A lot of beauty supply stores will have samples,” 86

atural-fiber rugs

are officially known as vegetable-fiber rugs. They look great with just about any decorating style, from traditional to modern. September-October 2009

Their subtle texture and subdued color work with any color scheme. They wear like iron, so they are family friendly. And they are so affordable you don’t feel like you’re making a lifetime commitment when you purchase one. For my living room, I picked a large sisal that covered most of the floor. In the winter, I layered Persian rugs on top to warm up the two distinct sitting areas. But this summer, I rolled up the wool rugs so I could enjoy the crisp look of the sisal. If you’re in the market for an area rug, 54

you can’t miss with vegetable-fiber rugs. But as with any design decision, the more you know before you buy, the happier you’ll be. First, learn about the different vegetable fibers so you can pick the one that works best in your home. Sisal, my favorite, is made from the same cactus plant used to make tequila. The pulp is spun into ropes, which are then woven into mats. With its clean, bright appearance, sisal is a great choice for those who want a transitional or contemporary feel.

While seagrass rugs have a similar look to sisal, the fibers are very different. Seagrass is a reed that grows in marshy areas. As a result, the grass has a natural coating that allows it to more easily repel moisture. A friend of mine swears by seagrass rugs after her teen boys spilled a cola on one and, the morning after, the liquid was still beaded on top of the rug and wiped up easily. When seagrass grows in more arid soil, it takes on a slightly darker color and is called dragon grass. Often, dragon-grass

rugs are available in a wider variety of patterns, some of which have a more refined appearance, making them a better pick for formal rooms. Coir rugs are made from coconut husks and are the roughest of the vegetable-fiber rugs. It’s best to use them for walk-off mats by your door or on a screened porch. While these are some of the most common vegetable-fiber rugs, you can also find rugs made of hemp, jute, bamboo and even woven paper. And if the natural fibers are too rough for your feet, check out the wool rugs woven to look like sisals. You’ll also need to pick how the edges of your new rug will be finished: surged or bound in cotton tape. I’m a fan of cotton tape, but picking the right color can be tricky. Light-colored tapes look marvelous and are so versatile you can move them from room to room. However, they will show dirt more readily. Dark-colored 86

Purple is a hot fashion color this year and has been in the limelight since last fall. Grayed-out violets are in and they work very well as an accent or as a neutral. Some redder, plummier purples are making an appearance. The CMG tells us that purple is the “must have” color in 2009. Green was the big deal in the past with all the green-living push we’ve had, but now it’s blue. And the blues that are popular include watery blues and sky blues mostly, but just about any blue you might choose will fit into the color trend for

this year and a few more years to come.

Grayed-out browns and plain old grays are the new sophistication in color. The reason given for the craving for these hues is the economy. An economically challenged economy begs for complex grays. These grays also bridge the area between black and brown where black is too harsh yet brown is not strong enough. Yellow is popular again. After all, yellow against gray is eye-popping. Here again, the droopy economy begs for vivid and energetic colors to lift us up. Remember back in the ‘80s when gray and yellow were very much “in”? It wasn’t so much a result of the economy then, though.

The new business color is white. Even corporate boardrooms are showing white in their decor. Technology has given us practical finishes, allowing us to use white in just about any setting. We are seeing

matt instead of gloss. We see textured whites instead of smooth whites. And all the finishes are washable and cleanable. The psychological reason given for our new craving for white, particularly in business atmospheres, is that white represents purity of thought, motive and result. Something we crave and are looking for in business more than ever now. Mauve is back. This old color looks new again in dusty violet shades. It works as an accent, but also serves as a neutral.

One of the most difficult tasks a designer has is making an old decor look new again, particularly if the owners love the old and want only to upgrade some things. Finding the perfect match in fabrics and accessories is sometimes almost impossible when a color fades from fashion. Now with these old colors coming back into view, perhaps this is the perfect time to upgrade without having to redo the entire decor. ∆

he old expression

“In with the good air, out with the bad air” applies when you’re trying to save someone’s life. Unfortunately, some people don’t understand how important this concept is when it comes to the life of the bathroom.

With all those plumbing fixtures packed into a small space, most bathrooms will inevitably be very moist areas. To my dismay, many homeowners and their family members never use the exhaust fan for their bathroom unless it’s wired directly in with the main bathroom light switch. I bet some of you believe that you are using September-October 2009

your exhaust fans properly, and think the fan is just meant for eliminating bathroom odors when company is over. While your bathroom fan does help control normal odors, the real reason for an exhaust fan in your bathroom is to control the moisture. Odors, although embarrassing, will not normally damage your

A New Room In

September-October 2009

64

Three Phases

Mary Carol Garrity

I

f you’ve been putting off a decorating project because you’re concerned it will overwhelm your budget or schedule, consider tackling the room in three separate stages. PHASE ONE: MAKE A PLAN Your first step is to develop a long-term decorating plan for the room. If you’re not sure what look you want for the space, thumb through decorating magazines and tear out photos of rooms you love. You’ll quickly see a pattern in the color scheme, furniture and accents. Once you’ve zeroed in on your style, plan out every detail of the room, from the wall color to the fabric you’ll use for accent pillows. Determine what furnishings you will need and where each piece will go. Do you want to use any of your existing furniture? If so, will it need to be reupholstered? Work all this into the plan. When your plan is finished, you’re ready to tackle phase one -- assembling the bones of the room. Paint your walls. Pick your area rug. Place key furnishings, such as the sofa and larger accent chairs. Then hang a piece of artwork you absolutely adore to give the room instant warmth and character. PHASE TWO: REFINE THE DESIGN: During phase two, you will add meat to the bones of your room. Start by selecting the secondary furnishings you identified in your long-term plan. For instance, when they are ready to start phase two of their living-room redesign, the young couple

I worked with will add an upholstered ottoman, two slipper chairs and a table behind their sofa. Nothing personalizes a room like artwork, so as you come across wonderful pieces that capture your imagination and heart, snatch them up and add them to your existing display so you have an evergrowing gallery on your walls. PHASE THREE: ADD FINISHING Once all your furniture is in place, it’s time for the all-important final touches that make a room irresistibly inviting. Hang beautiful window panels. Add accent pillows to your sofa and chairs. Using a few well-chosen accessories, create simple but powerful displays on your mantel and side tables. If there are any spots that still feel unfinished, address them now. For instance, place a ceramic garden stool next to your favorite reading chair so you have a spot for your book. Brighten up a dark corner with a mirrored floor screen. Add extra seating with a bench in front of your fireplace. While I believe that we are never completely done with a room, you’ll know your room is finished for now when it wraps its arms around you every time you walk in. ∆

hat do all parents have in common? They worry. They spend their lives worrying about you — and they never stop. But as they grow older, they have another worry: Not becoming a burden to their children. September-October 2009

66

Of Care By Terry Savage There’s a way to lift that burden from your mother and father. You and your siblings should look into chipping in for a Long Term Care Insurance policy for your mom and dad. I’ve written many columns about Long Term Care Insurance. As always, I put my money where my mouth is. So when my

own mother was hospitalized earlier this year, and subsequently required several weeks of nursing care, I came face to face with the situation I had written about. Actually, Mom has recovered quite nicely — and didn’t need to tap into her LTC insurance policy. But if things had gone differently, she and our family still would have had priceless peace of mind. That’s why I’m encouraging everyone — starting at age 50, and into your mid-70s — to consider the purchase of a Long Term Care Insurance policy. And I’m going to take on all the objections you might raise: I might not need it The odds are against you! According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, at least 70 percent of people over age 65 will require some long-term care services at some point in their lives. LTC insurance expert Claude Thau reports, “unpaid lifetime hours of informal caregiving averaged 3,200 for males and 4,000 for females.” Will your children provide that care? Just think of how hard it is to get everyone together for brunch or dinner on Mother’s Day. Who will take shifts watching over an infirm parent? It’s expensive! Yes, a Long Term Care policy with the minimum recommended coverage ($200/ day of coverage for three years, with simple inflation protection) would cost: — $1,438 per year for a 50-year-old healthy woman. — $2,253 a year if purchased at age 60. — $4,794 a year if purchased at age 70. A reminder that you might not qualify if you wait until you’re older. If you think annual premiums are expensive, that’s nothing compared with the cost of care itself! A just-released Genworth study shows that the median annual cost for a private room in a nursing facility in Chicago is $77,198. The survey notes that Chicago’s costs have increased 4 percent annually over the last five years. On an September-October 2009

ongoing basis, that would quickly swallow up your assets, leaving little for your spouse. My own assets will cover the cost. Aside from the fact that your savings have shrunk in the bear market, long-term care costs are soaring. And if you do need to use your policy, odds are you’ll get a windfall. A recent study by the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance shows that more than 180,000 people received claim benefits last year from their LTC insurance policies. One woman purchased a policy at age 43, paying an $1,800 annual premium. Three years later, her claim began, and 12 years later, she has received $1.2 million in benefits. Another insurer reports its largest “open claim” is a man who purchased benefits through his employer at age 54. Two years later his claim began, and has continued for almost seven years, paying out $690,000. As LTCI Association Executive Director Jesse Slome says: “Long-term care insurance is not the lottery . . . not something you really want to win — but it sure can prove to be valuable protection.” Government will pay for it! Yes, government will pay for care for impoverished seniors — after most of your other assets have been spent — through state Medicaid programs in state-funded institutions. But even today, state-funded nursing homes are forced to cut back on quality of care because of lack of funding. Having insurance means your policy will pay for your choice of home health care, assisted living or privately funded nursing homes. Policy prices might rise Yes, that’s a concern. LTC policies have been sold on the promise that the earlier you buy, the less expensive the premium. The implication was that these premiums were fixed for life — except that the fine print allowed insurers to raise premi- 90

Ask the Ophthalmologist Q. I just turned 45 and I need to hold things further away from me to read. Why? A. This condition is called presbyopia, and is a natural part of aging that affects virtually everyone. As one ages past 40, the natural lens of the eye begins to lose its ability to change focus. Reading glasses, bifocals, or progressive bifocals are typically needed.

Q. I hate wearing reading glasses, can I just have Laser Vision Correction to fix my eyes for good. A. No, LASIK cannot help Presbyopia - at least not directly. Laser vision correction such as LASIK or PRK is a very effective permanent treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. However, it is unable to fully treat presbyopia. In youth, the eye can change focus from distance to near without any effort since the natural lens can flex in the eye. As this ability is diminished with age, the range of vision becomes fixed. Imagine a camera whose zoom lens stops working. LASIK does not restore the range of focus of the eye, it can only focus the eye in one zone - typically for clear distance vision. So if you have good distance vision and are just experiencing loss of near vision, LASIK cannot undo the problem.

Q. My friend who is 55 just had LASIK in both eyes and doesn’t wear glasses for near or far, how is this possible? A. Since LASIK can only set one focal point for each eye to either near or far, LASIK surgeons can employ a technique called Monovision. With Monovision one eye is adjusted for distance vision and the other eye is set for near. Monovision is not for everyone, and should be simulated with contact lenses for some time prior to permanent LASIK treatment.

Q. My friend who is 60 just had cataract surgery with a special multifocal implant and now doesn’t need glasses for near or far. A. Cataract surgery entails removing the natural lens of the eye (once it has become cloudy) and replacing it with an artificial lens implant. Until the last few years, the implants could only restore the eyes’ focus in one focal point - typically for distance vision, with reading glasses necessary afterwards. Newer premium lenses such as Crystalens HD, ReStor, and Tecnis Multifocal allow the eye to regain a fuller range of vision - from near to far with more freedom from glasses.

Q. If I’m over 50 and want to free myself from bifocals, do I have to wait to develop cataracts before getting one of these premium implants? A. No, the surgery can be performed before development of cataracts, in which case it is called “refractive lens exchange” (RLE). The clear lens of the eye is replaced with a multifocal lens that corrects both the distance and near vision simultaneously. This procedure is not covered by medical insurance and is paid out-of-pocket like LASIK. Lens implants mentioned above are relatively new, and not all cataract surgeons are trained to implant them. Dr. Raviv has performed thousands of cataract and lens implant surgeries and has extensive experience with all of the newest FDA approved premium lenses (Crystalens HD, ReStor, Tecnis MF, Toric) for cataract surgery or RLE, as well as LASIK. Dr. Raviv is an invited speaker at many regional and national ophthalmology conferences, instrument inventor, and on the editorial advisory board of an industry leading journal. Some Mushrooms Boost Health By Rallie McAllister, M.D.

or folks who savor the flavor and texture of mushrooms, here’s another good reason to enjoy them: certain varieties are known to offer significant health benefits. Recent research suggests that the Shiitake mushroom, in particular, can help ward off a number of disorders and diseases, ranging from the common cold to cancer.

man studies, extracts of the fungus have been shown to effectively lower blood pressure. At least one compound found in the mushroom helps block the absorption of dietary fats in the body, reducing blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Researchers in Japan recently reported that the mushroom may help prevent atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries. Blood vessels of animals treated with Shiitake extract were found to have significant reductions in cholesterol-containing plaques. Compounds in the mushroom also appear to have significant anti-clotting effects, which could offer additional protection against heart attacks. Preliminary research suggests that the Shiitake may provide a number of benefits in the treatment of common viral infections, including influenza, hepatitis and AIDS. Extracts of the mushroom have been shown to trigger the production of interferon and other natural proteins that prevent viruses from multiplying in the body. From a nutritional standpoint, the Shiitake has even more to offer. In spite of being a low-calorie food, it’s packed with key vitamins and minerals. As a good source of protein, it serves as a useful meat substitute in vegetarian dishes. Unlike certain vegetables, cooking appears to improve the Shiitake’s nutritional value. The results of a study published in the scientific journal Food Chemistry demonstrated that heating the mushroom actually enhances its overall antioxidant activity. Shiitake and dietary supplements containing Shiitake extracts are generally considered to be safe and nontoxic. For some susceptible people, however, consuming the fungi can cause stomach upset and can occasionally lead to allergic reactions involving the skin and the respiratory system. Individuals suffering from gout or kidney stones should consume the 90

7 Steps To A W

hether you’re newly laid off or simply desperate for a career change, if you change your focus from just keeping your head above water to becoming a fearless fish and going after the job you truly want, you’ll be setting yourself up for a happier life in the long run.

You’re probably thinking, But wait! Isn’t this the worst possible time to pursue a new career? “Not at all,” says Robin Fisher Roffer, author of The Fearless Fish Out of Water: How to Succeed When You’re the Only One Like You. “Actually, it’s the perfect time to search your soul, muster your courage, and become a fearless (career changing) fish out of water. That may mean finding your dream job, entering a new industry, or even venturing out on your own as an entrepreneur.” Despite the bad economy, Roffer stresses that opportunities do exist. That’s why she says it’s more important than ever to create a personal brand identity and to shine a light on those qualities that make you different and more desirable than the rest. Playing up what makes you special could be the very thing that gets you your next job and keeps you in business. In her new book, Roffer teaches that— September-October 2009

76

Career Change Dottie DeHart

contrary to popular belief—standing out is a good thing. Being different gets you noticed and it’s the first step to gaining influence. Roffer offers seven steps to get the job you’ve always wanted, even in a down economy: STEP 1 Go Fishing for the Real You. No one knows what’s special about you better than you do. So, don’t squander it...focus on it! In today’s economy, there’s no room for generalists. We are in an era of specialization—where being different is good. As a free agent making a significant career change, you’ve got to put a flag in the ground and declare who you are and what you’re good at. If you haven’t done this, I promise that others have done it for you. But, they might have gotten you wrong. And, that’s the danger. “To write your next chapter, peel away all the layers you’ve built up playing the game for others and hone your skills to become an expert at something that’s valuable right now,” says Roffer. “Perhaps you’ve been in marketing at a big company and you want to break out and start your own firm. Think about what makes you special in the marketing arena and go with that. For example, maybe you can market any kind of product or service, but where you really excel is in multicultural marketing. If that’s your vein of gold, and where you can drive revenue to your client’s bottom line, then that’s where you might want to place the focus of your new business.”

STEP 2 Use Your Differences as a Lure. If you’ve gotten the pink slip and some severance pay, the natural tendency in extraordinary economic times like these might be to just hunker down, cut back on expenses, and try to hold on to the money. Newsflash! That’s exactly the strategy that could hang you in the long run. Because if you’re not standing up, standing out, and standing for something important right now, you will become irrelevant. “Ask former colleagues, clients, customers, and friends what they think makes you positively different at work,” says Roffer. “What qualities do you possess that attract people to you and the work you produce? Use the strengths of what makes you different to find your career destiny. Choose a path that feeds your passion and builds on who you are deep inside. Don’t just do the logical thing or the expected thing. Do what resonates with your soul. When you do what you love, you’ll get positive recognition and the money will come.” STEP 3 Find a Few Fish Like You. Next you’ll need to build relationships and make connections. Finding people who have faith in you is like finding an anchor in rough seas. Now is the time to connect with others in your situation who believe in your dream and can cheerlead you on. Start attending luncheons, trade shows, or seminars in the industry you want to be in to find people who share your passion. Find out how you can help each other get ahead in these difficult times. 85

Today, following a recent $20 million restoration, the resort has, once again, become a premier destination. As you enter the resort you are surrounded by an aura of luxury and classic elegance. Designer Geoffrey Bradfield, of Architectural Digest fame, has created graceful, opulent spaces that incorporate fine art and antiques. The public areas are highlighted by specially commissioned pieces such as consoles, hand-woven area rugs, floor lamps and chandeliers. The stylish guestrooms, decorated in a muted palette of slate blue,

One wall in each room showcases a large, black and white photograph of The Equinox in the early 1900s. In addition to accommodations in the main building, the resort also features guestrooms in the historic Orvis Inn next door and in the 1811 House, across the street. The resort offers an unmatched array of activities, so be sure to partake in some or all of them. Do you want to become an ace driver? Enroll in the Land Rover Experience Driving School for off-pavement driving classes on a specially designed 80-acre course. How about falconry, the ancient sport of the kings? Head to the British School of Falconry and learn how to fly a beautiful Harris hawk or go hunting with your bird and a trained dog. You can also take archery classes, and learn how to fly-fish in a stocked pond at the Orvis flyfishing school. If you’re in the mood for a round of golf, the resort’s award winning course is just across the street from the main entrance. In addition, the neighboring Southern Vermont area is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and horseback riding. In winter, the area offers skiing (downhill and cross county), Guestroom. I

n 1929, Carl Fisher,

the master builder who transformed Miami into the winter playground of yesteryear magnates, founded the Montauk Yacht Club, as a summer vacation spot for the movers and shakers of his era. September-October 2009

Located on 22 picturesque waterfront acres, at the tip of Long Island, this exclusive club was a favorite of turn of the century luminaries such as the Astors, Vanderbilts, Fords, Doubledays, and other illustrious familes. The Montauk Yacht Club was a catalyst that helped transform Long Island’s East End into what is currently known as “the Hamptons.” Today, after a recent multi million dollar renovation, the Montauk Yacht Club and 82

Marina has re-emerged as a leading resort, ideal for couples, families, weddings, and corporate events. The resort is reminiscent of a typical New England seafaring town with an understated elegance and laid-back atmosphere. The clubby interior is accented with nautical inspired artwork, and oversized historic photographs of yachtsmen and their giant catches. The property features 107 guestrooms

on Lake Montauk, and 23 rooms in 5 separate cottages. Rooms are decorated in a maritime, Ralph Lauren style, in navy and white colors. Amenities include flat screen TVs, plush bedding, goose down pillows, fluffy towels, and luxurious toiletries. The bungalow rooms, located along the beach and marina, feature a sun deck with lounges and day beds. Once you’ve settled in your room, head to the outdoor lobby, order your favorite

drink, and relax on an oversized couch, while watching the yachts gliding in and out of the marina. Take in the resort’s landmark replica of Montauk’s lighthouse, the heated swimming pool, the small sandy beach with its kayaks and paddle-boats, and tranquil Lake Montauk. Behind you, at the outdoor restaurant, guests are enjoying fresh sea breezes while savoring the casual fare. Make dinner reservations at Hurricane Alley, the resort’s indoor/outdoor restaurant featuring the coastal cuisine of chef Michael Domitrovich. Try the tuna tartar and the 2lb steamed lobster. After dinner, take a walk along the marina docks and view some of the most luxurious yachts on the east coast. The resort offers a myriad of activities such as swimming in the indoor or outdoor pools, kayaking, paddle boating, bicycling, tennis, and workouts at the fitness center. You can also pamper yourself at the spa with a relaxing massage or a soothing facial. Additional activities are only minutes away from the resort. Enjoy miles of pristine beaches (pick up a pass from the front desk), deep sea fishing, golf, water sports, winery tours, and a visit to the historic lighthouse. And, for world class shopping, dining, and people watching, “the Hamptons” are only a half hour drive away. ∆ Terrace on the lake. Suite. Lobster, Tuna tartar. Montauk Lighthouse. SEVEN STEPS — From Pg. 77 “Hire a business coach or find a mentor who can help you strategize your transition,” says Roffer. “Reward cheerleaders in your personal and professional circles for their loyalty and support and let go of naysayers and time wasters whose negativity will only hold you back. This is the moment to deepen positive relationships to ensure your security and your future.” STEP 4 Swim in Their Ocean Your Way. One way to differentiate yourself from the pack and stay true to the core you is by the way you dress. Put on what’s acceptable in your industry and then kick it up in unexpected ways to become unforgettable. Every great brand has packaging that reflects what’s on the inside. Think in those terms the next time you go shopping. Does a dress say “school teacher” when it needs to say “business development”? Does your computer bag say “accountant” when it needs to say “web designer”? Are you wearing a golf shirt when a tie would speak volumes about your business acumen? Bottom line: Look the part you’re playing and you’ll play it better. “Once you get inside your new company, adopt the culture without getting lost in it,” says Roffer. “As a person in transition, who feels like a fish out of water, it can be deadly to get so entrenched in someone else’s culture or demands that you can’t find the real you. Instead look for what resonates with you and don’t buy into what doesn’t feel right. Stay true to your core values. If you don’t, at the end of this recession, you may not recognize yourself.” STEP 5 Put Yourself Out on the Line. Fearless fish are perfectly positioned to make a difference in the world. Think of Oprah, Bono, and Bill Gates. It’s not the wallflower who’s going to help their customers go green, or the conformist who will invent the new business model. Getting behind a cause is good for business and makes you look like a hero. Volunteer, join a board, make a major donation.

“Each year a percentage of my company’s revenue goes to The Aquarium of the Pacific to save our oceans and the animals that live there,” says Roffer. “We put that fact right on our invoices. It makes our customers feel good about working with us. Figure out a way to give back as you transition to your new career. Or better yet, choose a career that is a cause! You may be paralyzed by fear and feel like every minute you need to push that rock up the hill. But shake it off. Give to others instead and watch what you receive in return.” STEP 6 Evolve by Casting a Wide Net. Conformity is not distinguishing. The way to live deeply is to keep reinventing yourself, changing with the times and with your customers. Holding onto the essential you while updating your style, your website, your advertising, and your thinking is the fastest way to the top. Step 6 of being a fearless fish asks that you use your place outside the circle to always be relevant to your company and industry. “If you’ve been pigeonholed, now is the time to change perception by learning a new language, taking classes that will sharpen your skills, becoming an apprentice to someone you aspire to be like, and polishing your web presence so that you shine online,” says Roffer. “Identify the next peak you want to climb and take the necessary steps to evolve who you are to get there. It’s about staying true to the essence of who you are, and then recasting your image to feel brand new.” STEP 7 Reel in Your Unique Power. It’s easy to succeed when things are going right. What determines real character is what you do when faced with adversity. To muster the strength to succeed, look back at other times in your life when you rose to the occasion. You’ll realize how brave you really are! “Uncertainty makes everyone question their personal value and the value of their skills,” says Roffer. “However, the fearless among us overcome these doubts by 87

HAVING HIGH SELF-ESTEEM — From Pg. 16 you, there are many tools for improving learn to recognize and understand the deself-esteem. First, become empowered to structive nature of bad habits. This takes improve your self-image. Make sure your a great deal of work and can be a lifelong needs are met, and actively look for the struggle. How you feel about yourself affects good in you and in others. Learn to reward yourself for a job well done, and work on every aspect of your life. Never be disheartened, look on the bright side and eradicating negativity. Avoid destructive relationships, and be empowered to help yourself live a build trust with those around you. Finally, healthier, happier life. ∆ INVESTING FOR COLLEGE — From Pg.22 Final Thoughts I know it’s hard to contemplate investing after the recent declines in the stock market and ongoing disconcerting economic news. But don’t let the recent past cloud your thinking about long-term goals like college for your children (and retirement for

yourself). As you should with any financial objective, look at your time frame, and look at the ways you can get the most out of your savings. I continue to suggest 529 plans as a good way to proceed, particularly if your children are young. ∆

HOSTING AN ECO-FRIENDLY — From Pg.31 friendly big day. On your wedding Web worn gowns are auctioned and all proceeds site you can also feature a section on all of go to breast-cancer research. Recycling the ways you are making your wedding dresses is a great eco-friendly choice. Remember: Even if you can only do one green so guests will know why they didn’t or two of these green options, every little get a paper invitation in the mail. bit helps! Considering there are approxi5. Attire mately 2.1 million weddings in the United Donate your dress to a charity like States each year, if every bride can make a “Brides Against Breast Cancer,” where few eco-chic changes, then collectively the sample gowns and donated previously impact will be huge. ∆ HOLLYWOOD HAIR — From Pg. 47 says Vetica. “Try a few that look right for your hair and see if you like what they do for you.” • Be cautious about using store-bought color. “What you see on the box is not HOME STYLE — From Pg. 56 tape hides dirt, but when you pick a distinct color, like navy or red, you limit your design options. While vegetable-fiber rugs are very durable, they are not indestructible, Jerry warns. Like any natural product, they can break down under wear and weathering. September-October 2009

usually what you get, because the color on the box was put on hair that was previously lightened. Ask your hairdresser for advice,” he says. ∆

So he suggests keeping the rugs away from moisture and treating them with stain protector to prevent spills and dirt from absorbing into the fibers. For day-to-day maintenance, use a high-suction vacuum cleaner, but don’t ever engage the beater bars, as they can tear up the fibers. ∆

IS A SECRET — From Pg. 24 actualization: unity, balance, harmony, completion, justice, complexity, essence, aliveness, beauty, benevolence, individuality, playfulness, truth, autonomy and meaningfulness? How much strength do you really have without vulnerability? So, what reason remains for keeping your secret, any secret? Perhaps you keep it under the guise of helping somebody else. What if you knew you were actually hurting – rather than protecting – that person? A secret is no more likely to help somebody else than it is to help you. Be an example. Be honest – impeccably honest – about your own stuff. A part of the truth isn’t really the truth. Live the message that the naked truth is nothing to be ashamed of; it is something to learn from. That’s where you’re apt to get hung up. When your knee-jerk reaction is to conceal the truth or spray a little pink paint on it, you’re too preoccupied to learn what you can learn from it. Our biggest “blunders” are our greatest learning opportunities. Maybe you declared bankruptcy, or lost it in a fit of rage, or carelessly took the keys when you’d had too much to drink. Or maybe you suffered the consequences of somebody else’s blunder. Thankfully, you don’t have to make the mistake to learn from it. The truth can seem embarrassing when you haven’t allowed it to serve a purpose in your life. But when you have paid dearly to get a priceless lesson, or plumbed the depths of your soul, or gained the kind of empathy that only comes through experience, there’s more value in sharing than in hiding. There’s more self-esteem in the truth than a lie; and living with secrets ultimately means living with lies. Save yourself and help save others. Look at the truth, release the shame, the tears and the reins that keep you from being your best self. ∆

FALL’S TOP FASHION — From Pg. 37 new short capelets. Shop for dramatic outerwear Now’s the time to wrap up in a fabulous coat that gives you super powers. Look for flowing cloaks or extra-special capes for even more hidden fashion potential. A new power coat is one of the fastest ways to update your wardrobe. Brighten up Add some bright colors to all those gray days. And I mean really bright. Think “highlighter” colors like neon pink, orange, yellow and lime! Even if you just add one accessory in a neon color, you’ll instantly transform your fashion mood. Sparkle during the day Who doesn’t love an excuse to wear some sequins to work every now and then? Add just a touch of elegance to tailored wardrobe basics with coppery metallic skirts, sequined gunmetal tanks or a slinky gold shift dress. Make it bold We’re all watching our wallets these days, so when you’re out shopping for new fall clothes and accessories, it’s more important than ever to find the most bang for your buck. Instead of buying a lot of boring “basics,” concentrate on adding one or two statement pieces: a knockout peplum jacket to wear with jeans or a colorful faux fur vest. Make shopping (and dressing up) fun again. ∆ SEVEN STEPS — From Pg. 85 practicing their ABCs—action, belief, and courage.” “It’s time to stop wringing your hands and start raising the bar on who you can be and where you can go,” says Roffer. “The way you see yourself can either propel you forward or hold you back. When you start going after jobs, remember, the story that you tell about yourself is what others will believe. Use your unique power to make them believe that you are indispensable and that is exactly what you will be!” ∆

BATHROOM EXHAUST — From Pg. 63 any fixture. (This is why many contractors wire the fan and lights separately.) Now – and be honest – how many of you are actually using your bathroom exhaust fans properly? Once you realize the importance of good bathroom ventilation, the first bathroom project you should take on is to inspect all the components of the existing or proposed exhaust fan, for proper operation and ventilation. If you’re inspecting your bathroom’s present ventilating system or installing a new system from scratch, there are guidelines you need to follow to ensure proper ventilation. Think of your bathroom venting system as a chain. If one of the links does not do its job, the entire system will fail. The three main links in the venting chain are:

1. Adequate fresh-air intake – To move moist air out, you must have a large enough intake opening to get fresh air into the bathroom. The easiest way to do this is to make sure you have a gap of at least a half inch under your bathroom door. 2. Proper exhaust venting – The exhaust duct should have smooth internal surfaces with few bends and a short run for the best airflow. The duct has to be vented to the outside of the home with a dryer-type hood and flap to prevent back drafts. 3. Appropriate CFM motor size – The bathroom size will determine the “cubic feet per minute” rating of the fan. For instance, an 8-by-8-foot bathroom should use a fan rated around 102 CFMs to supply the recommended 12 air changes an hour. ∆

MAKE A GIFT — From Pg. 68 ums for everyone who purchased a certain policy, if the state insurance regulator deemed it necessary. One way to guard against rising future prices is to buy only from the strongest companies, with the most experience in this area. They’re most likely to set realistic prices. Another way to avoid premium increases is to purchase a 10-pay policy, in which you pay premiums for 10 years, rather than the life of the policy. It’s an expensive option but one that limits your exposure to future premium increases. The insurance company might fail. Obviously, that’s a concern, given the recent headlines about AIG. While there’s no federal guarantee fund for insurance companies, our government has clearly

indicated its support for this large insurer. So sticking with the largest, best-rated companies for your LTC policy is a better bet than being uninsured. You can find those ratings at the website of the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance — www.aaltci.org/ratings. Or go to theStreet.com and click on Portfolio & Tools, then choose “Insurance Ratings” to enter the name of any insurer. Well, you can keep objecting — or you can start acting by calling to get a quote on what a policy would cost for your mom. And if you buy for both Mom and Dad, there is a significant discount for couples. The gift of long-term care insurance is a gift that shows you really care! And that’s the truth. ∆

MUSHROOMS — From Pg. 75 mushrooms in moderation. There’s some evidence that excessive consumption of Shiitake can trigger flare-ups of both conditions. If you enjoy the flavor and texture of Shiitake, you’ll probably be able to find a good selection at your local supermarket. It’s best to choose fresh, clean mushrooms

that are firm and plump and avoid those that are wrinkled, wet or slimy. If you’re not a fan of the flavor or texture, but you still want all the health benefits that the Shiitake has to offer, you can find extracts of the mushroom in capsules and powders at many health-food stores and herb shops. ∆
