PREFACE 1

Mr. Dharmali Kusumadi Architrave

Creating a sense of place is at the heart of good resort and hotel design. A successful resort will immerse visitors in their surroundings, transporting them away from their everyday life. It will fix them in a time and place: there and then. And because of this, it will be memorable. They will remember that place forever. Most people visit a resort because the area or region is attractive to them, and this should be at the forefront of an architect’s mind. Any design should be informed by the character of the region, paying close attention to local context. If designers are sensitive towards the resort’s environment, the result will be stronger – but sensitivity can mean many things. A successful design may harmonise with the existing built environment. It may be pared down in appearance. It may utilise existing buildings or materials. Additional outside rooms and spaces can connect a hotel to its grounds. A design that brings in light will change with the seasons, infusing it with local character and blending it into its surroundings. Alternatively, the design may be distinctly different. Architectural contrast can be beautiful, and a resort that stands out for the right reasons can enhance an area, bringing its own character. Resorts often give designers the flexibility to experiment more freely than they are able to in an urban context. The result of such freedom can be inspiring and innovative design. In either case, a resort needs a sense of itself to succeed. It can be modern or traditional, bold or understated, but in order that it lives long in the memory of its guests, it must be distinctive.

In the heart of the largest ski area in the world, this hotel offers a ski experience beyond expectations. Design, technology and innovation are the cornerstone of Altapura. The idea was to build premises with a low effect on the pristine nature surrounding Val Thorens. Thus solar panels are covering all the south oriented wall of the hotel, and all the windows beneficiates of solar cell to keep the maximum of heat. Then while considering how to reduce waste during the construction, Nicolas Sibuet thought of reusing the wood off cut to decorate interior walls of the hotel. Spacious and elegant areas bring to mind the flair of luxury palace hotels; the atmosphere is Nordic-chic with a choice of noble materials such as wood and stone. Altapura displays its own style, featuring both subdued and festive, cosmopolitan atmosphere. The magic of Altapura also comes from a decision to place new technologies right at the heart of this luxury universe. With interactive touch screens, Iphone/Ipod docks plus Mac Minis in all the rooms, guests can access and exchange information with the front desk, but also with all the other guests. Thus the use of this technology creates a unique friendly atmosphere where guests can organize meetings and events among them. Finally it tries to offer a consistent ski experience where every detail is thought to improve the guests' well being and comfort. From the Ski Shop in the hotel with a direct access to the slopes, to the 1,000m² Pure Altitude Spa, guests' experience is brought to the next level.

Portetta Hotel Sitting slap bang on the nursery slopes in 1650, Portetta has 38 rooms, 6 lofts, 2 restaurants, Dauphin spa, ski rental shop and lovely large sitting area in the center of which is a roaring fire. Within the hotel the room categories are named in a "as it says on the tin" way, which suits skiing simpletons. There are Piste views which sleep 2, Mountain views sleeping 2, Family piste views which sleep 6 and Family mountain views which sleep 6– told you it was for simpletons. Each room, be it for families or for couples, has sumptuous amounts of space, en-suite bathrooms, great interiors and views of those glorious Alps. Down below, one of the most talked about aspects of the hotel is the boot room, something that doesn’t normally invite much comment, but has been heralded as "the most civilized ski/boot room this side of the Atlantic". Adjoining the boot

room is the ski hire shop within Portetta’s four walls which makes this hotel close to perfection for families in particular. The spa area has a sauna, steam room and fitness room, just in case the skiing hasn’t knackered you out.

Mountain Lodges Belvedere is made up of a handful of chalets, the loveliest of which is a cluster known as the Portetta Mountain Lodges. Owned by the same clever proprietor of Lime Wood, the UK's hottest new hotel, the Portetta Mountain Lodges are four sumptuously kitted out chalets. Three are spacious and sleep up to 16 and the fourth is one of the Alps’ truly diddiest chalets, sleeping no more than two beings. Chalet Blanchot (sleeps 12 in 5 en-suites) comes complete with wooden floors, woollen cashmere fabrics, antique chests and a serious BOSE sound system. Chalet Chamois (sleeps 16 in 7 en-suites)

- 24 -

is wonderfully spacious lending itself beautifully to three or even four families. Chalet Marmotte (sleeps 10 in 4 en-suites) has a rustic chic feel with classically alpine woodwork throughout and rich warm colors. Petite Marmotte (sleeps 2 in 1 en-suite) was a former hay store before being lovingly resorted into this rustic retreat the size of which is hard to find anywhere in the alps – honeymooners heaven.

Portetta Lofts There are six Portetta Lofts which vary in size and which sit comfortably at the top of Portetta hotel. These lofts are essentially like chalets perched on top of a hotel so the space available is boundless – large enough for two families to enjoy. Joyously, guests have access to the facilities in the hotel including the restaurant, spa and in-house ski rental – a convenience never to be under-estimated.

Torres del Paine, Chilean Patagonia

ARCHITECT Cazú Zegers, Roberto Benavente, Rodrigo Ferrer DESIGNER Alexandra Edwards, Carolina Delpiano CONTRIBUTOR Tierra Patagonia

Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa is a 40-room boutique hotel located on the edge of the Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. This property is the latest addition from the Purcell family; owners of Tierra Atacama in the Chilean Altiplano, and Ski Portillo, an exclusive ski resort nestled in the Andes Mountain Range. An intriguing first approach slowly reveals the hotel, sitting inconspicuously, almost blended into its landscape. Guests enter via a large wooden ramp, past a roaring Patagonian bonfire, and through large glass doors. They are welcomed by stunning views of the Lake and Torres del Paine which are framed by floor-to-ceiling windows lining the length of the open living space. Alexandra Edwards and Carolina Delpiano poignantly described the innovative interior design concept as somewhat non-design. Their aim was to make the landscape the protagonist, avoiding superfluous items and focusing solely on high quality organic elements. Using the same “Lenga” wood that covers the outside of the building, Edwards and Delpiano created a cozy feeling indoors, wanting guests to feel at home. A "shower" of lights falls from a Lenga branch in the dining room, perfectly complementing the design concept. The hotel’s Uma Spa is lined with treated wooden panels and features stone washbasins. The indoor heated pool is surrounded by a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that highlights the same striking views of Torres del Paine. Tierra Patagonia’s design can be described as the blending of contemporary design and traditional materials, creating a minimalistic yet harmonious ambiance in this spectacular landscape.

The Dolder Grand, a name synonymous with luxury for more than a century, has reinvented itself as a beacon of contemporary style. Straddling the divide between past and present, this majestic retreat remains a true architectural icon and a testament to the diversity of timeless design. The Dolder Grand’s venerable history dates back to 1899, when architect Jacques Gros (1858-1922) designed the original hotel in traditional Swiss castle style. After Foster’s renovation, the rooms in the main building have richly patterned fabrics in regal hues of gold and crimson, while the rooms in the two new wings epitomize the spirit of the modern age. Four luxury top suites invoke the signature styles of decades of some of the hotel’s famous guests. Suite 100, for example, channels the spirit of the Rolling Stones in the retro style with mod furniture in retro tones like pink, orange and magenta. The hotel’s two restaurants both feature spectacular views of Zurich and the surrounding Alps. The Garden Restaurant includes a huge terrace and a lounge that opens during summer, while the hotel’s main restaurant features restored historic ceilings and refined furnishings in shades of caramel and deep reds, awarded with 2 Michelin stars. The Dolder’s 4,000 m² spa, designed by SPAd Inc and its founder Sylvia Sepielli, boasts a limestone ravine bathed in natural light that descends to a refreshing pool. “Steam pots,” aromatic columns of fragrant scents, line the entrances to the gentlemen’s and ladies’ spas. Besides a solarium, aroma pool and steam bath, the spa also includes a sparkling meditation room lined with mirrored mosaics and the “Sunaburo” with pebble lounge tubs that conform to guests’ bodies, while radiating soothing warmth.

Il Salviatino

Florence, Italy CONTRIBUTOR Il Salviatino

- 142 -

Il Salviatino's design pays homage to its heritage as a luxury Renaissance villa in the hills overlooking Florence. Features predominantly hand-crafted by acclaimed Tuscan artisans are tastefully integrated by world-renowned architect Luciano Maria Colombo, famed for his work throughout Italy.

Florence. Its creative designs are not only aesthetically and symmetrically pleasing but also enjoyable and fun – such as their reproduction tin, copper and wooden bathtubs of the 1800s, styled by the specialist antiquarian, Bucaletti.

Rooms are also individually designed and decorated, according to the essential concept of "creating a local hotel that doesn’t fall into standards".

Inspiring bathroom ceramics and tiles are made by Simas, dating back to 1955, and “old fashioned” bath taps are by Stella, with a history as tap specialists dating back to 1882.

All silverware, from cutlery and chandeliers to ice buckets and room lamps, is crafted by Benedetti, renowned for over half a century for combining ancient & modern silversmith technology and finishing at Tavernelle in Florence.

Today they continuously apply new technology to create "intelligent" products that transcend and ultimately dictate fashion by challenging essential values such as the force of the elements and passage of time.

Porcelain plates, cups and dinnerware is custom-produced by Mangani, famed as ceramic sculptors since the early 1800s, when Cesarino Mangani opened the first atelier in Florence with his five sons, creating pieces of art for wealthy owners of villas around

Beyond its patronage of prominent Tuscan artisans, Il Salviatino also features boutique-style outlets for two local craftsmen famed for handmade shirts and shoes.

The resort design intent was to harmoniously integrate the main building with the natural coastal context. The building adapts to the topography and gently embraces a main central open space. Protected from the north winds this main open space is surrounded by exuberant gardens that are home to unique tropical and subtropical plants, trees, and palms, and beautiful lagoontype pools, cascades, and other water elements. The hotel lobby is raised 14 m above the sea-level, to provide a unique panoramic view of the entire resort, British Gibraltar and the opposite coastline of the African continent. The resort consists of 148 suites and rooms and 89 hotel-managed apartments, all with generous terraces and views to the sea. The hotel and apartment community enjoy all the needed amenities of a modern resort hotel, including conference center, spa, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and retail areas. Tourism is a service industry which relies on landscape and architecture in order to give content to its offer. Landscape design is fundamental to resort architecture. The integration of architecture with nature in the natural and social environment is the fundamental design strategy at MELVIN VILLARROEL. Accordingly their focus is to make design an instrument for improving the quality of life and the relationship with the environment, and defending the ideal balance between what is built and the natural landscape.

Located in the golfing heart of the Algarve, the Victoria is a golf-dedicated hotel directly facing Arnold Palmer’s Victoria golf course (hence the name), and surrounded by two other courses. This quasi-symmetrical building is formed by a main central building and two bedroom wings generating a U-shape facing west. The sense of arrival begins with the entry plaza. With its three independent entrances and stone arcade, its function is to separate the guests fluxes coming as groups, or for conferences, into the lateral canopies, releasing the monumental porte-cochère for the individual visitors. The stunning two-storey lobby offers direct views of the golf course. From there, the guest can descend towards the outside pools and bars, or go up to the fine-dining restaurant and the Spa. Meticulously detailed in fine stonework, solid wood and handmade ceramics, the building echoes the spirit of prewar grand hotels, as it aspires to a contemporary rethinking of classical splendour. The façade system is a composite of massive yellow Travertine stone blocks, white precast concrete lintels and light-gold anodized aluminium frames. Also in precast concrete, and as part of the façade composition, the artist Pedro Calapez designed and moulded a series of decorative bas-reliefs. - 193 -
