It’s evident midway into the second decade of the 21st-century that climate change is a global phenomenon and that the design sector has a moral obligation to address its myriad consequences. There are many tools available to the architecture profession to implement sustainable design solutions. It’s more a matter of choosing the right ones. Where sustainable design is truly succeeding is not in the use of complex technologies, but in the use of passive, natural and low-tech approaches to healthy environments. Many of these measures are low cost as well: well insulated thermal envelopes to reduce energy consumption; natural ventilation to reduce fan energy; daylight harvesting to reduce electrical consumption; integration of natural and recycled materials; and the use of green roofs to reduce storm water impacts, extend natural habitat and reduce the heat island effect. These are all strategies, rather than technologies, which use natural systems to create greener, more sustainable environments. As you will read in this edition of Sustainable & Green Building Design, there is a renewed sense of collaboration among architects, clients and consultants to achieve exemplary performance. After all, it’s in everyone’s best interest. Two projects from Diamond Schmitt Architects demonstrate this. The new Peter Gilgan Centre for Research & Learning at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto is the largest paediatric research tower in the world. Laboratories are not typically associated with energy conservation. By taking an integrated design and a ‘wholebuilding’ approach, significant savings were realized in energy and water consumption, in sourcing local materials, landfill diversion and improved indoor air quality. Geothermal energy sourcing, high insulation values of roof and wall assemblies, high efficiency lighting, w a te r h a r ve s t i n g a n d re n e w a b l e wood sourcing round out this highly sustainable facility. The big oppor tunities in the next years are to pull net carbon zero and net energy zero design more into the mainstream of architectural design. LEED Platinum, the highest rating for sustainability in a widely recognized green design rating system, can be achieved using conventional mechanical systems and conventional building budgets. We’ve done it. The key is intelligent design and collaboration with specialists. Making the investment in design, while setting t h e h i g h e s t g re e n s t a n d a rd c a n transform the built landscape around the world. It is clearly an important step towards reducing our energy consumption and to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Biomimicry: Looking to Nature for Architectural Innovation The first time I heard the term Biomimicry was during a talk on sustainability at The Georgia Institute of Technology by Ray Anderson, a well-known [recently deceased] entrepreneur and former CEO of Interface, Inc. He defined it as “looking to nature for innovation.” His explanation intrigued me but I struggled to understand how it related to sustainability. I have since integrated the concept into my work and now firmly believe that we can all benefit from taking a closer look at nature to advance our discipline. Biomimicry (rooted in the word bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a relatively new discipline that studies nature and then imitates it in modern design and processes to solve human challenges. The core premise is that as nature evolved, it adapted to its changing environment without altering or negatively impacting the delicate ecosystem around it. Increasingly, architects, designers and engineers are looking to nature in much the same way. More often; however, humans tend to alter or dominate nature to their own advantage. Examples include the Hoover Dam for architecture, petro-chemicals for plastics, nuclear power for new and more energy-efficient sources, and antibacterial soaps to prevent disease. But not enough thought has been given to the ecological consequences. Dams can block natural migration and sedimentary flow, creating obstacles to spawning and ultimately decreasing biodiversity. Petrochemicals are used in a range of household goods from trash bags to saran wrap and utensils, but when released in high concentration into the atmosphere or ocean, they can also be toxic. And, Japan’s recent disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant demonstrates the potential risks of contamination and radiation to the ecosystem. As an architect with a desire to preser ve and protect our environment for future generations, I believe that Biomimicry represents opportunity - opportunity to study and learn from natural phenomena and to bring forth innovative new approaches to design. The benefits are widespread. So why not learn from nature and its millions of years of evolutionary innovation and progress? Nature is efficient, diverse, adaptable, beautiful, and it offers a new world of possibilities for innovation. Take the Shinkansen Bullet Train, for example. In the 1990s, a Japanese bird-watching engineer from the JRWest rail company, Eiji Nakatsu, took inspiration from the kingfisher, a fish-eating predator that darts in and out of the water barely causing a ripple. Nakatsu’s sleek design of a 50-foot train with a long steel beak, is not only beautiful, but it reduced energy consumption by about 20% and enabled travel speeds of up to 300 km an hour between Tokyo and Osaka.

Likewise, sharks manage to stay remarkably clear of algae and are able to reduce drag thanks to their unique skin, which is covered with denticles that have microscopic patterns. Their skin also prevents microorganisms from hitching free rides. NASA scientists won an Olympic medal and an American Cup in 1987 using shark-skin-like materials to build their boat. Today, in addition to being used to help planes, boats and windmills reduce drag and conserve energy, the concept is being used to make surfaces for hospitals, restaurants, kitchens and public restrooms. Biomimetic architecture is defined as ‘a contemporary philosophy that seeks solutions for sustainability in nature, not by replicating the natural forms, but by understanding the rules governing those forms.’ It is not solely about beauty and aesthetics, but it also seeks to use nature as inspiration to solve architectural and environmental challenges, improve sustainability and drive energy efficiency and longevity to meet the evolving needs of our society. When designing for hospitals, educational facilities, public sector or private, this philosophy can be applied to transform the way we approach our projects in a more sustainable manner. The possibilities are endless. From self-cleaning exteriors to greater efficiency or even a more comfortable and soothing décor, nature is a bountiful resource for inspiration and transformational change. Our industry is evolving and so are the number of solutions to sustainable challenges regarding heating and ventilation systems, renewable energy, sustainability in building materials, waste management, building placement and even user experience, design and aesthetics. I encourage you to explore Biomimicr y as a source of inspiration and innovation.

site plan

The Nemours Children’s Hospital and grounds are a testament to the term “healing environment”. Designed to reassure and inspire, the project has an enriching and fresh interior atmosphere, and a site design that celebrates the role nature can play in the healing process. The project includes a landscaped entry court, 95 inpatient beds, 76 exam rooms, emergency facilities, a central energy plant and a parking deck. Outdoor amenities include landscaped rooftop terraces, interactive water features, and a “discovery garden”. Of note in this design, is the alignment of outpatient care and inpatient care in a single building. Particular medical specialties are located in adjacent wings of the same floor, and utilize shared waiting spaces. This allows for continuity of the care team, who become familiar to the children during both clinic visits and inpatient stays. LEED Gold certification of Nemours Children's Hospital was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. In particular, to address energy consumption and occupant comfort, intense sun and humidity were a major design concern. Extensive solar studies resulted in shaded outdoor spaces, and also helped determine the design and placement of sun screens - blocking direct sunlight, while admitting abundant natural light to the interiors. The resulting design provided energy savings of 22 percent. Coupled with proper building orientation and the use of green roofs, occupants stay comfortable and building mechanical systems operate efficiently.

Built on a greenfield site, there was initially very little vegetation. To enhance the surrounding environment, native planting was prioritized early in the construction process, allowing a mature landscape to develop by opening day. As a result, interior spaces are flooded with natural light and views of nature are abundant. Plantings were selected so as not to require irrigation; however, when needed, reclaimed water from a retention pond is available as a supplement. Additional sustainable features of the project included: ·Solar hot water. ·90 percent of construction waste was recycled per national regulations. ·Discovery Garden with nature trails, accessible to all patients and families. ·To protect indoor air quality, the carpeting and paint contain low or no VOCs and composite wood products, like plywood that uses adhesives, contain no added urea formaldehyde. ·Rubber flooring, ceiling tiles and concrete structure utilized recycled content. ·Bathrooms are equipped with low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets reducing water usage by 32 percent. ·Free electric vehicle charging stations in the parking garage and ample bicycle parking areas throughout the campus promote alternative transportation options. ·Nemours Children's Hospital was certified LEED Gold in 2013 and is one of three pediatric LEED Gold facilities in the United States.

Children’s of Alabama’s Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children expansion is the first healthcare facility in Alabama, and one of the first of its kind in the U.S., to gain LEED Gold status as a result of its design and use of sustainable, energy-efficient and environmentally responsible materials. Children’s opened the $400 million, 670,000-square-foot expansion in August 2012. The hospital expansion will accommodate projected growth in patient volume, anticipated medical technology needs, consolidation of services and a family-centered design to enhance patient and family comfort. Pediatric cardiovascular surgery and related services and solid organ transplant services were moved from the nearby University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to Children’s. Children’s construction expenses will be recovered in the long-term because green buildings use less energy, less water, require less maintenance and last longer. A partial list of Children’s sustainability initiatives includes: • Materials from recycled raw materials were used for construction and 30 to 40 percent of the construction waste was recycled. Widespread use of local materials also reduced fuel costs for transportation. Natural materials, including recycled mirrors and seashells were used in the terrazzo flooring in public areas of the hospital. • Energy-efficient mechanical systems were installed that are 30 percent more efficient in energy use than those in comparably built hospitals currently being constructed. • The north-south orientation of the building and the use of exterior glass in every room will also help save on energy costs. 24

• Large glass windows allow plentiful natural light into the building, so all patient rooms, waiting rooms and even staff break rooms get light from outside. • Up to 30,000 gallons of condensate are collected from the building’s air conditioning system and used for irrigation and also to cool equipment. • Designated “green” space on Children’s campus on 17th Street between 5th and 6th avenues, including a water feature where children can play, and 140 bicycle racks also contribute to the hospital’s earth-friendly profile. • Ground floor exterior landscaping incorporates a variety of plantings indigenous to the area, providing an oasis of green amid the hospital’s urban setting. More plantings are planned to highlight pedestrian access to Birmingham’s award-winning Railroad Reservation Park three blocks to the north. • The rooftop garden of the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children is planted with sedum, a low-maintenance, heat- and droughttolerant ground cover native to Alabama. The rooftop landscaping reduces heat absorption and storm water, runoff and also provides insulation and oxygenation. • Other features of the expansion include the recycling and reuse of building materials salvaged from the demolition of two outdated buildings that were located on the construction site; selection of low-emission building materials; and reduction of construction activity pollution. • Extensive use of low-energy LED lighting in public interior spaces was another feature that saves energy as well as costs.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto has an active research department where previously two thousand research and support staff were dispersed across six downtown buildings. To bring them together for the first time represented an opportunity to create a collaborative environment as well as heighten public awareness with a new gateway building to the SickKids campus. At 21 stories, the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning is the largest child health research tower in the world. An abundance of natural daylight is just one element that positions this green laboratory for sustainable design. Fully 80 percent of the tower’s high performance glazed enclosure is covered in a horizontal graduated ceramic frit for thermal control that maximizes daylight harvesting. Natural light penetrates to over 90 percent of the program areas. The subtle colour palette of the building’s glass spandrel creates a signature identity for the Hospital on the city skyline and has been likened to the pattern of the Northern Lights. The Gilgan Centre takes a whole-building approach to sustainable design in five key areas of human and environmental health: 1. sustainable site development with 75 percent waste diverted from landfills 2. water efficiency produces a 50 percent reduction in water use 3. energy efficiency measures will bring a 38 percent reduction in 30

energy use 4. materials selection with 22.5 percent recycled content for new construction materials 5. improved indoor environmental quality from low VOC-emitting products For a downtown facility well served by public transit, underground parking accommodates only 100 cars and has secure storage for 150 bicycles. Energy efficiency is achieved by radiant heating throughout, connection to a high-efficiency district energy steam plant, dedicated heat recovery chillers and heat recovery from laboratory exhaust systems. A rainwater retention tank provides greywater for low-flow flush fixtures. The first three floors of The Gilgan Centre house the Learning Institute with conference and education facilities. State-of-theart teleconferencing and distance learning technologies allows information exchange to connect across the SickKids campus and around the world. Curvilinear bay windows reveal six thematically grouped collaborative spaces – two-and three-storey volumes where researchers and students can exchange information, relax, and enjoy the panoramic views of the city skyline. Efficiencies extended to the construction as well; the building came in nine percent under budget.

The Sabadell Hospital has been extended in a first phase with a new building perpendicular to the old ones, and a new volume with a staircase and elevators. The simplicity of the new building gives a new image to the whole hospital, and has permitted its construction without notable incident in the normal operation of the hospital. The public areas are mainly organized on the side of the park, providing nice views from all the waiting rooms and corridors. On the other side, the technical areas are connected with the ones from the existing building through the new volume containing the staircase and elevators. Multiple courtyards allow natural light enhanced with an ingenious system of mirrors. The lobby of the new building connects with the existing one, and together with a large porch creates a large area of access, related to the park and the Gran Via (the main street that gets to the hospital). Sustainability is present in many activities:

40

- energy saving - recycling water - use of recycled materials - use of construction methods that decrease the execution timing - low-energy lightning The most apparent is the system that can adjust the solar radiation protection, formed by vertical slats. They move automatically according to the angle of the solar radiation, allowing the light to come in, but closing enough when the sunlight is bothering. Also the green roof has been an issue decided from the beginning, since the new building is smaller than the original one, and we wanted that views of the new building from a higher position were the continuation of the park. Also the green roof provides a good isolation and a minor visual impact for the user of the hospital.

An inviting rehabilitation center highlighting maximum comfort and low operating costs are the result of a comprehensive renovation, modernization and extension of the healthcare facility Bad Schallerbach by the Health Insurance Fund for Railway-Workers and Miners (VAEB). Die Bad Schallerbach VAEB combines a visionary concept based on a harmonious exchange between health, nature and human ecology. This exchange is emphasized throughout the building via its spatial references to the surrounding natural environment and use of natural materials throughout. The therapy pool, with its dramatic cantilevered roof to the south serves as the heart of the facility. From there, the interior space flows out to the surrounding park updated with inviting new seating areas shaded by old birch/oak trees. The fluid transition between the interior and exterior of the building represents a symbiotic relationship between medicine and nature. The interior emphasizes natural surfaces including slate, stone and rubber floors as well as furniture made of light oak has been imbedded with fresh hues that lend the healthcare facility a resort like quality. The Climate and Energy Fund of the Federal Government financially supported the renovation of the building, thus supporting a number of additional qualitative and energy measures. These include the replacement of all the windows of the existing building, the switch to green electricity and improvement of home automation systems. As a result, the entire building has the status equivalent of a low-energy building and is as an active certified building which means minimal operating costs and maximum comfort. According to OIB, Guideline 6 had to be reduced by a minimum 50 percent in order to achieve heating and cooling requirements. The total energy requirement of the renovated building had to be at least 35 percent lower than the sharing of renewable energy sources or waste heat from unused potentials. Both parameters were significantly below this level. The building’s extension and renovation, thermal rehabilitation and resource-efficient planning and execution set new standards for comparable facilities. In Austria alone, over 100 such facilities must be restored within the next few years. Despite a limited budget for building costs, it was possible to improve the building’s heating requirements by 87 percent in the treatment and accommodation areas. This represents a fall below the legally required value of 65 percent. The building’s cooling requirements were also improved by as much as 82 percent. The architects were able to achieve this by improving the compactness of the building, consistent thermal insulation of walls and roof surfaces and eliminating thermal bridges through the demolition of minor building parts. All windows and glass surfaces were designed as Ug 0.7 W/m2 K and all rooms are equipped with controlled ventilation and efficient heat recovery supported by hot water collectors on the roof. Various criteria is assessed and evaluated by a neutral party including; active building standards, energy efficiency of planning and quality of execution, the quality of building materials and construction, as well as key aspects related to comfort and indoor air quality.

This 34,000 SF facility located in an under-served neighborhood in SW Atlanta combines under one roof a primary care and behavioral health clinic, childcare, a dental clinic and a workforce community center. In doing so, it projects a holistic idea of wellness and a positive self-image for a challenged community. We wanted to create a structure that feels vibrant and alive. The roof was conceived as a dynamic, protective element, a metaphoric blanket, opening upward to welcome in the public. A standing-seam “clamp” folds over the roof to house mechanical equipment, identify major entries and serve as a beacon. Inside, a decentralized, double-height circulation lobby further integrates all the programmatic components. The notion of co-locating all these functions in a single facility to serve people of varied socio-economic backgrounds led us to consider the communal folk art of quilting, in particular its social and aesthetic traditions in the African-American community. Equally exciting were the collaged paintings of Atlanta artist Radcliff Bailey, who pieces together found objects, archival photographs and historic imagery with jazz-like effects. These inspirations led to our studying how the building’s exterior materials could reflect the arrhythmic yet unified patterns of both quilting and improvisational music. 56

With the facility promoting health and wellness for the community, it was appropriate to apply the same idea of health and wellness to the building itself. By incorporating simple sustainable design strategies to the design of the facility, we are able to provide a thoughtful and inviting building for the community. This designbuild, fast-track project was completed, from start to finish, in 275 days and achieved LEED certification. The integration of sustainable design strategies was initiated at the beginning of design while considering the various programs to be housed in the facility and determining building placement on the 4 acre site. A detention pond located at the rear of the site is bordered by a natural stream-buffer which assists with the management of storm-water run-off; 100% of precipitation is managed on site. Through the orientation of the building and distribution of glazing through curtainwall systems and punch window openings, we were able to provide ample daylighting to the public and private zones. The dynamic roof geometry offers shading throughout the various seasons. Low-e coated insulated glass units help to minimize the amount of solar heat gain. Additionally, a highly reflective roof covering reduces the heat island effect.

The "House of Music" in Aalborg, Denmark, was designed by the Viennese architectural studio Coop Himmelb(l)au as a combined school and concert hall: its open structure promotes the exchange between the audience and artists, and the students and teachers. "The idea behind the building can already be read from the outer shape. The school embraces the concert hall," explained Wolf D. Prix, design principal and CEO of Coop Himmelb(l)au. U-shaped rehearsal and training rooms are arranged around the core of the ensemble, a concert hall for about 1,300 visitors. A generous foyer connects these spaces and opens out with a multistorey window area onto an adjacent cultural space and a fjord. Under the foyer, three more rooms of various sizes complement the space: the intimate hall, the rhythmic hall, and the classic hall. Through multiple observation windows, students and visitors can look into the concert hall from the foyer and the practice rooms and experience the musical events, including concerts and

rehearsals. For Wolf D. Prix, the "House of Music" is a symbol of the unity between music and architecture: "Music is the art of striking a chord in people directly. Like the body of musical instruments this SITE PLAN | 1:2000 architecture serves as a resonance body for the creativity in the House of Music." The energy concept Instead of fans, the foyer uses the natural thermal buoyancy in the large vertical space for ventilation. Water-filled hypocaust pipes in the concrete floor slab are used for cooling in summer and heating in winter. The concrete walls around the concert hall act as an additional storage capacity for thermal energy. The fjord is also used for cost-free cooling. The piping and air vents are equipped with highly efficient rotating heat exchangers. Very efficient ventilation systems with low air velocities are attached under the seats in the concert hall. 0

The project has revitalized a vacant stadium ground into a 24/7 urban park and community destination. It is a joint-use partnership between the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club; combining football operations, stadium programming, and a recreation centre. The facility adaptively reuses the 1978 stadium fitness centre and connects these user groups over 4 stories through a cascading promenade and an innovative approach to materials and transparency. Three primary masses – Field House, Aquatics and Gymnasium – respond to the dynamic triangulated geometries of the site and frame a central lobby space, ‘the Social Heart’. These in turn define three exterior forecourt spaces. This LEED Silver Targeted project abated and ‘adaptively reused’ the existing 1978 recreation centre to become the permanent home of the Eskimos Operations. The new building envelope was designed to high performance criteria conforming to the innovative government of Alberta ‘PERSIST’ guidelines and ‘ARCA’ roofing guidelines. 78

No additional parking was added to the site; the replacement vehicular forecourt is designed as pedestrianized event space. Landscape areas surrounding the Stadium Site were expanded and rejuvenated. The project was designed as a Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Some of the unique sustainable approaches to this project include: Canopy: the south canopy blocks summer south and west light and permits low winter heat gain. Triple Glazing / Ceramic Frit: field house, pool facades, and skylights have triple glazed, thermally broken, low-e, curtainwall systems – including ceramic frit pattern to modulate thermal build up, solar glare, and privacy. Daylighting: the field house, pool and central lobby spaces use clerestory polycarbonate glazing and baffled skylights to reduce artificial lighting. Solar Wall: the upper south wall of the field house is formed of ducted black corrugated metal that pre-heats intake air for the field house.

Super insulated, use of district heating

2. Use of green roof, solar cells and LED lighting

Opera House Linz has been laid out as an inwardly reposing building complex, clearly structured and yet manageable in spite of its enormous dimensions, impressive with its timeless modern classical orientation. Like a double colonnade the orthogonal structure consisting of white pre-cast concrete elements protectively encircles the house as a metaphoric curtain. With this architecturally artistic touch of outer layer, which is limitative and at the same time transparent, the building meets the demands for a cultural institution that is interwoven with city life. Where facade bays were to be closed, panels made of split Roman travertine have been inserted. The naturally split, beige surface has a soft texture in comparison with the smooth, white framework of reinforced concrete. All components behind the “stone curtain”, which refer to the building’s interior, are covered with a layer of patinated brass and together with the dark window frames constitute a formal unit. The attached upper storey is fitted with white prefabricated concrete panels, the surfaces of which are grooved and have been left rough. The glass facade of the main foyer is also fitted with vertical louvers; aside from their desired stylistic effect toward the outside, the elements made of perforated plate and set as swords in front of the façde also serve as protection against the sun in their unfolded state. 82

The pleasant shades of colour of the travertine panels and the dark hue of the brass patinas are also used as formal elements in the interior of the opera house. For the flooring in the entrance foyer “Architektur Consult” and “Archinauten” selected a polished, light Untersberg marble, which is also used on the stairs; the walls are of a dark, slightly reddish wood: Steam-heated acacia wood in louver form is used vertically as a semi-transparent room divider and partly superimposed on the wall in the main foyer and in the upper storey on the ceiling. Here also the floor is covered with wood, light oak floor boards. These materials run through into the auditorium; here, however, the shell with mat wood surfaces is contrasted by the balconies which exhibit a golden gleam. They are fitted with a smooth surface made of liquid metal, which is not designed with the classic gold plating but with a diffuse shimmer and has a deep glow in artificial light when reflected. The stairs of the interior access to the galleries in the auditorium are separated with a transparent room divider; small golden metal rods are stretched vertically from floor to ceiling and give the effect of a pearl curtain. This means that here also is a “curtain” as a design leitmotiv that stretches from the façde into the heart of the music theatre, the auditorium.

SITE PLAN 128

The sustainable city is the challenge of the 21st century and this challenge is starting at Cardinet-Chalabre. This new ZAC (urban development zone) illustrates the level of ambition of the Paris City Council: to create a large sustainable neighbourhood in the heart of the French capital, by setting the bar high with buildings to at least BBC standard (low energy consumption), at best energy positive, to demonstrate that it is not only possible, but also desirable, qualitative and contemporary. The developed programme (nursery and primary school + 152 student housing units + kitchen) calls for an architectural expression that asserts both its uniqueness and its essential unity. We installed, dug, extruded and ventilated in such a way as to give our building a unique morphology conducive to transitions: of scale, urban development transition and generations. Transition of scale with 5 discontinuous volumes on different

levels which like landings simultaneously provide structure and communicate calm...the "fairly high" scale of the student residence and the "low familiar" scale of the school. Transition also in the lines of convergence with one facade looking out over the park in unyielding self affirmation and another lower one looking out over an airy street that ends curiously with a "totem object" with friendly lines: a folly that provides a unique and dynamic signpost for the entrance to the park. Highly graphic, contemporary and playful, compact and airy at the same time, the building clearly displays its generational transitions. Lower down the school and leisure centre functions are on two tributaries separated by the yard and connected by a walkway. Above the two sets of student housing: a low-rise building to the North West which is not intimidated by the imposing stature of the Ibis hotel behind it and the small tower in the corner angle that is visible from all sides.

The new RIVP (Paris public housing agency) building houses three services: a hostel for immigrants, a hostel for young workers, a 66 place day-care on the ground floor, as well as communal facilities. Located in Paris’ 20th arrondissement, just beyond the beltway, it is both Parisian and Lilasian. The building’s almost unique location in Paris makes it a concrete symbol of the reconnection between the two areas. Lilas residences and day-nursery’s building, answers to the climate plan regulations of the city of Paris (50 kWh/m²/year), which has for objective the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of the Parisian territory by 75% in 2050 in comparison to 2004. PRAGMATIC ORGANIZATION With a floor area ratio of 5,1 this building is very compact, which allows the reduction of heat loss. We chose then to undertake the density of the program with a very rational organization of the dwellings. By means of the environmental engineering consulting firm Franck Boutté Consultants we worked every opening in a generous way: every dwelling, with a surface of about 23 m², possesses a window of 1,95 x 2 meters. A vertical fault accentuates the building at Doctor Gley street, throwing some natural light in as well as a series of urban framings to circulation areas creating, with this, spaces of conviviality and relaxation in every floor. Since the ground floor is mainly occupied by the day-nursery, we chose to install all the programs common to both residences (media library, fitness gym, communal kitchen) in the 4th floor. This arrangement, being more central, makes these programs more accessible to the residents. MATERIALS The building’s volume is lined by a homogeneous skin that wraps the whole building, insulating it in mineral wool and brick cladding. This brick cladding favors the sustainability and maintenance of the building, in particular response to the closeness to the periphery. To highlight the voluptuousness of this material, both faults are lined in copper, which luminosity and reflection contrast with the velvet of the dark brick, two natural materials. ENERGIES The roof is for technical use only and contains, among others, solar panels for domestic hot water, which produce 30% of the annual need for sanitary hot water in the building. Supplied by the French company Apple-Wind, wind turbines in vertical axis are also installed on the roof. They feed the day-nursery during the day and tip over their production onto the dwellings in the evening. The compensation of an estimated 25kwh/m² answers advantageously to the climate plan of Paris. This choice of energy supply, still experimental in urban areas, is particularly justified here: the building, with its raised altimetry, is located in a windy corridor.

The three programmes are laid out within the “U”-shaped building facing the south side of rue des Cévennes, set on the basement that contains the Agence du Court Métrage. The rue des Cévennes is narrow and lined on its southern pavement by a building of seven floors which screens the sun throughout the day: it places all the facades opposite in the shade for most of the year. The courtyard opened in the middle of the “U” makes the sun and the light penetrate the heart of the building as far as possible. The appartements for migrant workers have their own independent entrance easily seen fron the street; its functioning does not interfere in any way with the other programmes. A passageway runs through the block , linking the rue des Cévennes and the future pedestrian walkway. This passage provides access to the lobbies of the accommodation, which are arranged around two stairwells. The Agence du Court Métrage and its small cinema (42 seats) are located as a seperate unit on the building’s ground floor, with independant access from the corner of rue des Cévennes and rue Lacordaire. Highly visible and identifiable, despite being completely integrated into the whole structure, it functions independently of the rest of the operation. The whole of the ground floor is raised above street level to protect it from any risk of flooding. The lobbies of the housing are thus approximately 50 cm above the level of the street. The very gentle slope of the pedestrian walkway leading to the foyers (approximately 2%) makes it easy to overcome this change of level.

Opening on June 6, 2013, the project provides 33 affordable units above active retail and community space, while creating a pedestrianfriendly urban façade. A priority for this affordable urban multi-family residential project was to be fully consistent with the City’s Sustainable Building Guidelines and to exemplify sustainable architecture. A multidisciplinary design team collaborated to implement strategies for daylighting, water savings, environmental preferable materials, and energy efficiency. Each affordable residential unit uses natural ventilation for cooling supplemented with a high-energy efficiency heating system. The units are accessed from the courtyard in three distinctive masses that give identity to the residences and allow for distinct entrances providing natural light to each unit. The building’s inherent organization and articulation provides a variety of units that interact uniquely with the open space around them. An economically sustainable community: The high-yet open, livable and quality-density in this mixed-use urban project helps to strengthen economic sustainability by generating an engaging, thriving, socially-responsible and

affordable urban housing neighborhood. On the 28th Street façade, a two-story volume accommodating a community room helps to break down the mass of the building and allows the ocean breeze to create naturally ventilated spaces. This lower portion strengthens the eastwest orientation of the interior courtyard while maximizing daylight for the open space. The architectural design emphasizes economy by using an approach of carving, adding and subtracting volumes. The exterior façade uses a layering approach of projected and recessed planes, with the ground floor expressed as a strong base. The walls are punched with a pattern of windows articulated as vertical, horizontal or wrapped openings. The simple palette of materials includes multicolored cement board panels, steel and resin-panel railings. The project exceeds Title 24 Energy Standards by 20% and is fully consistent with the City’s Sustainable Building Guidelines regarding landscape irrigation and water conservation— including the avoidance of turfgrass and invasive plants, and the use of high-efficiency toilets.

4. Maximized density of site for housing to reduce transportation needs to campus

To mitigate the high density of accommodations required on the site, the design adopts a strategy of a tri-parte form and discontinuous stepped silhouette. These formal ideas are complimented by the unique polychrome façade that merges the large building with the surrounding landscape. This building is the fourth phase of fast track construction of the residential campus for Ozyegin University (OZU), a new private Turkish university started in 2008. The three primary blocks of the building composition are planned with an efficient double loaded circulation and suites of single,

174

double, and triple bed units. Social spaces are provided at the “elbow” of each of the building’s wings and below grade within the central space between the three wings. Each wing of the building is defined visually by a varied composition of solid/voids distributed according to the living suite sizes behind. The range of façade colors enhances this complexity and is selected from the pixelization of the local landscape. This connects the building to the site, in addition to representing the diversity of the student body housed within.

Located on the banks of the river Seine, facing Ile Saint-Germain, the project meets the requirements of highly demanding sustainable development specifications. With their simple volumetry, the specificity of the housing units lies in the handling of the external spaces which extend beyond the facades to create zinc “boxes positioned to take advantage of the views and sunlight. The use of a concrete double wall providing both an attractive finish and insulation is a first for this type of high density programme. To ensure urban coherence, the residential hotel is constructed from the same materials. The three buildings create transparencies through a patio opening onto the river Seine.

BBK Sarriko Centre The BBK Sarriko Centre is a residential building that combines two different uses: retirement homes and social flats for young people. The design had to be flexible and able to accommodate changes throughout the life of the building, since the client wants accommodation for young people to be the predominant use of the building in the future. The building faces the new Sarriko Square and completes the regeneration of this area initiated by the music conservatory. It is conceived as a single block with different heights and with a

smaller massing than the building previously occuping the plot. In line with their environmental awareness, BBK has the LEED Certificate. Recycled materials have been used both in the main frame and in the interior finishes. Moreover, the building has high efficiency lighting, heating and cooling systems. It incorporates solar thermal panels and it also has water saving systems. The interior finishes are free of volatile organic compound materials and the wood entirely comes from sustainable sources.

The NOMADE Architectes agency recently delivered an accommodation facility for the elderly (EHPA) in Concoret in the Morbihan department. The town now has the first BBC Effinergie labelled accommodation facility for the elderly in France. The building provides solutions to a number of complex problems that presented themselves in terms of the programme and the construction itself. The challenge was to welcome and integrate residents into a stimulating social environment while respecting each person’s individuality and privacy and, at the same time, incorporate a high performance energy control approach into the construction process. Its interior layout favours an optimised flow management and a functional distribution of spaces. The building is located in a rural environment. The EHPA takes advantage of the site’s slopes and inclines to organise itself around a number of independent levels and to limit the building’s landtake. It is built right up against the hillside. To the south, the building opens generously onto the surroundings on all its levels. The facility is constructed from a combined concrete and timber structure. The use of wood as a facing material gives

the entire constructed envelope a sense of unity. The vertical cladding applied to the façades uses local species (acacia and chestnut) that are provided with two colour tones (grey and natural wood) that will harmonise perfectly over time. The entrance to the building, located to the north, is signalled by a canopy. The northern façade, interspersed with openings, introduces a soft light into the circulation areas. To the south, the façade offers a series of terraces and balconies. The 44 one- and two-room apartments are all provided with a hall serving a bathroom, an equipped living room, a kitchenette and a bedroom. Each housing unit is provided with an external space accessible from the living room or the bedroom, offering comfort and independence. A large south-facing and partially covered terrace extends the living spaces by providing an unobstructed view over the forest. The planted roof integrates the building into its environment, increases its inertia and provides a better control over rainwater drainage. It also completes the finish to the fifth façade of this BBC Effinergie energy efficiency labelled building.

Title

Robert Menzies Student Accommodation

Site Plan

The new student accommodation building at Robert Menzies College (RMC), part of Macquarie University in Sydney is a contemporary symbol for the College on the expanding Macquarie University Campus. It represents the brand, culture and function of RMC and reinforces the college’s interactive, supportive and social emphasis. It is an infill development which seeks to complete the fabric of the existing college at RMC. Architectural references have been made to the robust materials and textures of the existing buildings, such as face brick, off-form concrete and terracotta cladding. The building also picks up on elements of form, such as the vertical windows of the existing dining hall and the modulated blocks of the accommodation buildings. The building was conceived with passive solar principles in mind and provides custom sunshading elements, cross ventilation to all common areas and corridors, insulated facades and thermal mass. Automatically controlled and timed lighting, mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning are used in common areas to reduce energy wastage. No air-conditioning has been provided to the accommodation rooms, and even in the extremes of the season the occupants have been completely comfortable. Rainwater is1:500 harvested in a large underground tank for irrigation of @ A4 the landscaped areas of the college, and high efficiency gas hot water units, and energy efficient appliances have also been installed. While the building sits well stylistically with the existing buildings on the site, its design distinguishes it from the accommodation provided for the under-graduates currently housed at the college and provides the new branding element that the college desired. Already, the amenities and contemporary appeal have contributed to record student intake when compared to neighbouring colleges. Scale

Chartier Dalix architects Since its creation in 2006 by Frédéric Chartier and Pascale Dalix, Chartier Dalix architects office directs its research towards a balance between location and projection, between what is given and what can go further. The constraints are thus considered as tools that drive the design of the project and define the uniqueness and strength of the resulting building. The act of architecture is designed as a common and multidisciplinary structure, a contextual, unifying and innovating editing. The agency currently has 14 staff. Each project is supported from start to finish by a single team, from producing the event itself, to developing studies and dealing with the site. This organization allows us to monitor each project over time. This aligns with our commitment to build a motivated and stable team. ACXT ACXT was set up as an association of professionals. More than four hundred people work at ACXT today, more than half of them being architects. Engineers are also involved: civil, mechanical, electrical, agricultural..., biologists, experts in acoustics, illumination, telecommunications, costs, building site organization, graphic designers or IT technicians. Due to the problems caused by specialization and the development of technology, we seek solutions that integrate them right from the beginning, in the project conception stage. Knowledge is shared and participation and collaboration is encouraged. The London magazine Building Design, in its 2013 annual ranking BD World Architecture top 100, placed ACXT in position 50 of the most important firms worldwide by number of architects.

Tectoniques Founded 20 years ago, Tectoniques is a collective firm that brings together two gen-erations of architects and engineers. It takes a militant approach in which architecture is closely linked to environmental strategies. With its considerable depth of experience in the field, it possesses recognised expertise and a solid critical framework. Convinced as it is about the validity of “dry” construction, Tectoniques focuses on the implementation of simple, clean, evolutive protocols. And wood imposed itself, right from the start, as a material that can satisfy a twofold requirement: environmental respon-sibility and architectural quality. The firm’s work is guided by a number of generic objectives: - architectural forms that are results, not postulates; - intelligible architecture in which things exist for what they are, without artifice; - buildings that are adaptable and evolutive; - an avoidance of unnecessary complexity.

rue royale architectes Since 1994, when rue royale was set up, a collective modus operandi has been central to its ethos. Each project incorporates multiple proposals which are in turn worked out, critiqued and improved on. All views are freely aired, without any regard for hierarchy, and it is the collation of analyses and ideas that results in the optimisation of the final design. The process may be turbulent, and indeed frustrating for some individuals – but it has proven fruitful. rue royale does not slavishly adhere to any specific formal line. A methodical approach to the analysis of programmes and sites, and their interrelatedness, is what determines the specific identity of each developing project. There is a certain sobriety in the concepts, but no hint of stylistic repetitiveness. And one might also mention the agency’s ongoing investigations into the use of new materials. rue royale calls on outside talents to participate in particular projects, according to the problematic. Lighting engineers, artists and landscape designers may all propose viewpoints capable of contributing to the success of a given project.

Christelle Avenier, Miguel Cornejo Christelle Avenier and Miguel Cornejo (born in Santiago de Chile) studied together at the École Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Malaquais. After their diploma, they worked on projects with various architects – Mathias Klotz in Santiago de Chile, Douglas Deremer in San Francisco and, in France, François Roche, (R&Sie(n)), XTU, Jacques Ferrier, and Galiano & Simon – before founding their own firm in Paris. Today Avenier Cornejo are in the preliminary design phase of a number of schemes of various types: housing, sheltered accommodation, children’s facilities, and medical installations. 2/3/4/ architecture Founded in 2000, 2/3/4/ unites the experience of three French firms that, since the early 1980s, have paid particular attention to new lifestyles that demand a return to simplicity and the basics. 2/3/4/ defends the luxury of a "lifestyle" that seeks out "well-being". Made to measure, each project is the opportunity for a study that makes it unique whether in terms of sustainable development, typology or construction system. Just as the glassblower, 2/3/4/ buildings take their shape from the inside. Like clothes, their envelopes protect without restricting movement. Like a landscape, they change over time. Even before the selection of construction materials, 2/3/4/ favors the only readily available raw material: light. 2/3/4/ believes "density" is the major component of the city. Their expertise on the permeability of buildings allows such an alchemy to transform "density into intensity".
