Preface

It is a basic function of architecture to responsibly use the finite resources of our planet. This has been true throughout history and should be considered indisputable. It is also true that architects have not always been good at fulfilling this responsibility - sometimes due to their own choice or sometimes to the effects of an ignorant or apathetic society. It is clear though that the present urgency to reduce the carbon footprints of buildings, to respond to the impending effects of climate change, and to use energy and waste effectively has thankfully entered the design process of most architecture firms, as evidenced in this publication. One would have hoped though, that the ubiquity of the profession’s response to the sustainable imperative would quiet the claims of so-called expert sustainable practices. Instead, firms clamor over each other to brag about how many LEED professionals they have on staff, how many green pacts they’ve signed, how they can draw fancy red and blue arrows, and how they will definitely give their client the impossible – a zero-carbon footprint. In the USA this particular kind of catfighting is employed in the effort to secure jobs under the auspicious notion that one architect can provide a more sustainable building than another architect simply because they talk about it more. Architecture does not need this noise and clients deserve more substance. What architecture needs are two simultaneous pursuits. The first pursuit is the serious and funded research of new technologies and strategies that will significantly alter the way we think about the relationship between architecture and nature. Massive innovation is required and this is likely the work of the universities, public policy, and philanthropic investments in
research and application at a scale larger than any single building. The second pursuit is a renewed attentiveness and conversation for the virtues and values of architecture as a cultural discipline – one with allegiances and histories that include but are far broader than its important relationship with climate change. The tangible, readily digestible, and quantifiable features of sustainability should not distract us from the nuanced and difficult conversations about what differentiates one architecture from another and, if we are very brave, what is good and bad. There is no doubt that the world requires buildings that effectively use the finite resources of our planet and these two named pursuits will not dilute the average architect’s ability to fulfill this basic responsibility. What the world really needs is a massive adjustment in how we conceive our relationship with nature. But as architects we must believe that the world also needs great architecture.

The mandate of the University of British Columbia Renew program is to modernize, rather than replace, out-dated and obsolete buildings. By rehabilitating old structures, substantial reductions in raw materials, energy inputs, and pollutants are achieved – more than any replacement ‘green’ building could accomplish. The Renew program meaningfully adds re-Use to the sustainability tenets of Reduce and Recycle, commonly practiced in green building design. The Biological Sciences Complex is located at the heart of the University of British Columbia Vancouver Point Grey campus. The South and West wings of the complex were fast-tracked through design and construction in only 19 months to meet a federal stimulus funding deadline. The $47-million, 170,000 sq. ft. project now houses state-of the art laboratories, aquaria, research spaces, classrooms, offices and gathering spaces for the Departments of Botany and Zoology. The all-new mechanical systems include a comprehensive energy-scavenging hydronic heating/cooling system, variable flow lab exhaust, natural ventilation for private
12
offices, and an aquatic life-support system. Electrical services include emergency power systems to protect ongoing research, state-of-the-art networking, and advanced lighting systems that include a prototype daylight-harvesting system developed at UBC. The project is LEED Gold certified, a challenging feat to achieve in view of the exacting requirements of laboratory buildings. Roof drainage integrated in the buttresses diverts rainwater to a swale along Main Mall. Singleglazed windows were replaced with double-glazed operable windows; further, existing solid spandrel panels were replaced with double-glazing to increase daylighting in laboratories, classrooms, faculty and administrative offices. Corridors benefit from large expanses of translucent glass, allowing natural light to enter spaces in the building that are more deeply recessed. The facility will accrue enormous operating energy savings over the next forty years. The project was a study in the many ways consultants can help preserve the Earth and its living inhabitants – the same goals as the Bioscience researchers who now use the facility.

The winning entry in a design-build competition, this 55,000 square foot college Contemporary Arts Center is finely attuned to its Southern California climate and community context. The high performance LEED Platinum certified project incorporates innovative strategies for energy efficiency that become bold design ideas. Inserted into an existing urban arts campus, the fivestory structure includes a large experimental black box theater and an art gallery, both double-height spaces, surrounded by multiple studios, classrooms and offices. Reinforcing the interdisciplinary approach of the School of the Arts, the architecture stimulates interaction with the surrounding Arts Village with multiple terraces, landscaped courtyards, balconies and a colonnade. A new entrance court plaza has been planted with shade trees and fitted with wooden benches and integrated lighting to make it an inviting public gathering space. Located four miles from the ocean, the complex’s benign marine climate contributed to the main design idea. The theater and gallery, both requiring highly mediated environmental control and lighting, are placed at the core of the building. Wrapped around them are smaller, naturally ventilated rooms and corridors that
make up most of the building exterior. Because these perimeter spaces intentionally have no air-conditioning, users are educated in controlling temperature with operable windows and become participants in the green agenda. The top floor consists entirely of artists’ studios, also naturally ventilated, which open onto outdoor terraces that double as extended work areas. The western façade has metal sunscreens and breezy exterior corridors with windows opening to offices. In the early phases of design wind-tunnel tests were conducted that resulted in the incorporation of air ducts that draw hot air through the roof, providing additional crossventilation and cooling. Built into a sloping site, the Arts Building is clad in brick veneer, concrete masonry and glass, which reference the materials that make up much of the surrounding campus. In contrast to the suncontrol strategies of the west façade, the north façade is a glazed wall. The lobby’s full-height mullion-less glass allows unobstructed views into the building, while above it floats a composition of clear, frosted and spandrel glass. The entrance plaza pavers are continued into the lobby, reinforcing the indoor-outdoor emphasis. 23

The York House Senior School in Vancouver, British Columbia provides a strong presence and new entry point for the greater York House campus through a soaring glazed portal, circulation crossroads and atrium space that connects the south, north and east wings of the existing school. The addition includes 36,000 square feet of classrooms; administrative and service spaces; social locker zones and lounge areas for students in grades eight through twelve. Innovative, progressive and collaborative state-of-the-art learning and teaching spaces are adaptable and flexible, with spaces and places for informal student and teacher interaction throughout the day. The composition and hierarchy of the primary west-facing entry elevation is stepped back at the third story, creating an extensive balcony that reduces apparent scale and relates to the horizontal data of the adjacent north and south wings. Vivid, wood-finished, vertical sunshades at the west and east elevations provide solar shading and accentuate the striking presence of the building on the street and to the campus. Junior students pass through the sky-lit atrium crossroads, which
features several terraced social and informal study spaces, on their way to other areas of the existing school. The central atrium space connects the Senior School to the existing north and south wings though a generous, day-lit concourse, creating dynamic interactions throughout the school day, as well as a unified circulation system for the campus as a whole. Finish materials are simple and spare with a palette of textured concrete, wood, glass and stone used throughout the facility. The donor recognition program features the names of thousands of famous women, selected by the students that are screen-printed onto the myriad of glass guards delineating the circulation routes throughout the central atrium crossroads. Built to the equivalent of LEED Gold standard, the project follows best practices in sustainable design through storm water management, energy optimization, passive solar control and day-lighting, resource-efficient building materials, and enhanced indoor air quality and occupant comfort through the stack effect of the central atrium.

The building “Carmen Martín Gaite” is the first one of the Getafe Campus extension of the Madrid Carlos III University. Our arrangement, winner of the urban planning contest, lays the buildings on both sides of a linear park that organizes the pedestrian traffic of the campus. This first building settles the front of Madrid Street, connecting itself by means of a walkway to the building already standing on the plot and making it possible to cross the building in its central part through a big foyer that connects the new park with the rest of the campus. Two storeys are organized on each side of this foyer, the Humanities library on one side and the lecture rooms on the side that is closer to the pre-existing lecture hall building. Over these, the departmental zone is organized on one storey. The building design is sustained on our engagement with innovation and sustainability, as well as on our conviction that these two go hand in hand.
On the one hand, as opposed to an educational architecture that is traditionally rigid, systematic and repetitive, we take sides for a flexible, diverse and humanized architecture. An architecture tending less to be a reflection of the institution’s authority and more attentive to provide services to teachers and students, creating spaces for diverse encounters where a great number of new models of learning and research can be accommodated. On the other hand, the whole building responds to the growing commitment of all the parties towards the environmental sustainability. During the project and construction phases, countless sustainability measures have been incorporated, with the result that a degree of excellence has been achieved that had not been reached in Spain until now by an educational centre. It will be the first one of its kind to obtain a LEED Certificate and it will be in the highest grade: LEED Platinum.

Site Description: Located along the Southern edge of the College’s campus, the site marks a primary entry point for visitors arriving via Lebanon Street. Existing parking lots, buildings and adjacent physical plant infrastructure obstructed pedestrian pathways and screened views of the Hood Museum of Art. A granite ledge and a four-foot drop in topography across the site impacted design development and required innovative foundation design. Sustainability and accessibility were key client goals from the very start of the targeted LEED Gold project. Concept design workshops evaluated best practice building envelope strategies. Peer review and testing during design and construction and building envelope commissioning confirmed detail execution. Exterior rain screen and cavity walls are designed with fully adhered membrane and high density SPF insulation to achieve continuity in air, vapor, water and thermal barriers. Argon-filled, triple-glazed windows include Solarban 70XL coatings on low iron glass, warm edge spacers and integrated flanges to eliminate perimeter air leakage. Zoned mechanical systems minimize energy losses while maximizing interior air quality. Negatively pressured process exhaust spaces, which require 100% fresh air exchange, use high efficiency enthalpy wheels to minimize energy losses. Occupancy driven spaces use CO2 monitoring to dynamically adjust fresh air requirements. Displacement ventilation in the Loew Auditorium, radiant floors at perimeter lobbies and lounges, active chilled beams in seminar rooms and valance heaters at perimeter offices provide the highest efficiency conditioning at each unique condition. High performance lighting design incorporates daylight
harvesting at upper level art studios, low energy fixtures and occupancy sensor controls. Rainwater recovery tanks reduce storm water loads on municipal infrastructure and provide irrigation for the Maffei Arts Plaza lawn and plantings. Materials Used – Innovative Building Components: Black lace rust phyllite stone panel rain screen cladding compliments the existing campus material palette. Custom monolithic precast concrete panels are used as interior and exterior cladding of the Loew Auditorium. Triple-glazed structural glass lanterns with custom printed frits accent entries in the facades and provide unique meeting spaces within the building. Open slat wood ceilings with complex curvature in the Nearburg Arts Forum conceal acoustical attenuation and smoke control fans that serve the three story open atrium. Backlit CNC punched aluminum screens activate public frontage at the corner of Shared Exhibition Gallery. A four foot tall landscape wall of split faced Vermont slate sculpings meanders through the site and building to register the topography and blur boundaries between the Maffei Arts Plaza, interior Nearburg Arts Forum and Lebanon Street sidewalk. The Maffei Arts Plaza is terraced with a paved upper sculpture courtyard (which acts as a front terrace for the Hood Museum of Art and stage for outdoor performances), a grass lawn for formal events and recreation, and a lower pedestrian zone along Lebanon Street. Granite curbs and bollards as well as benches carved into the slate sculping wall provide casual seating throughout this new urban space.

Site plan showing the building on Washington Square Park in Manhattan
This project is a Multi-Faith Spiritual Center and Academic Building located in New York, New York. The building location is an exceptionally prominent site in Manhattan, on the south side of Washington Square Park and directly on axis with the termination of Fifth Avenue. The project’s core mission was to bring together students and scholars from a variety of religious and academic backgrounds into one multi-faith and multifunction building in the heart of the campus. This ambitious project provides multi-denominational sacred spaces, including meeting rooms, meditation rooms, ablution rooms, liturgical storage and clergy offices, shared by over 60 faith-based campus groups. In addition to this core mission, the building also provides classrooms, a 250 seat lecture hall, music practice facilities for single musicians and the full university symphony, a 5,000 SF multi-purpose hall, and the Colloquium Room – a remarkable facility for globally telecast events, colloquia, and event space for University leadership. Besides all of this, the building’s ground floor is the Catholic Center which had occupied the site since 1964 in the form of a two-story brutalist building. With such an eclectic mix of programs the primary design challenges were the planning for efficient and flexible use of limited space and the resolution of the constituent’s identities into a shared and iconic building image. Because it is intended to provide a home for the dozens of
64
under-served religious organizations on the campus, the design needed to strongly express the spiritual mission of the building without relying on any singular religious iconography. We discovered that the ‘tree of life’ is a reappearing motif that resonates with nearly all religions and faiths. The image of the tree, with all of its positive connotations (growth, expansive, spreading out of a common root, natural, provider of shelter, food, beauty, etc.) together with the strong western architectural tradition of using ornamental motives based on natural forms, were two additional conceptual roots for the ‘ Tree of Life.’ The façade is a continuous foliage of diverse densities; an abstraction of a growing tree produced through the arrangement of 12 uniquely designed laminated and perforated quartzite stone panels. This is the first application of this type of laminated stone technology in the United States. Sustainable Elements: The stone layer, 35% of it perforated and the remainder solid, standing 4” off of the surface of building envelope, is a rain screen. This technology improves the overall moisture control, heat gain, and thermal performance of the building, and contributed to its LEED Gold rating. Other noteworthy sustainable strategies include an exemplary performance in water use reduction, a managed storm runoff retention system, an efficient use of NYU campus cogeneration plant, and a very colorful garden roof system.

The new location for the building is congenial with its position in the academic society as well as in the emerging cityscape. The building protrudes over the intersection between Solnavägen, a thoroughfare that is about to be transformed into an urban street, and the pedestrian axis that will connect the university with the extensive hospital currently under construction next by. The proximity to its large complex called for an expressive form, and discussions with the antiquary authorities created a clarifying distinction to a listed building nearby. These geometries – the street 5,5 meter below the crossing pedestrian axis and the V-shaped auditorium – denominated the plan. The urban pattern called for a building that treated the street with the same respect as the main entrance toward the walkway. If Solnavägen shall be a street with a human presence in the future, entrances close to the pavement are of crucial importance. If the relation to the city is guided by a wish to adapt to an urban pattern, the plan of the building is generated by the auditorium. For a large aula of today, where lectures with images and performances on the stage demand good sightlines and acoustics to each and every seat, the V-shaped seating have proved to be the most efficient.
Daylight, efficiency and energy consumption (the aula has reached the “silver” level of sustainability) have been some of the key criteria when planning the aula, but the most visual statement will always be the inclined façade. The twisted elevation is made entirely of flat glass panes; a geometry made possible by the triangular pattern that encloses the entire building. A variation of different panes handles the demands for insulation, transparency as well as shade without compromising the uniform character. In the interior, the wooden framework is as striking as the geometry. An ambition to provide a “Nordic” atmosphere to the setting, have called for an extensive use of fir in structures as well as surfaces. The 1000-seat auditorium dominates the building that also hosts facilities for administration and a faculty club. These are located on top of the hall, which was made possible thru large trusses. The entire structure stands on three legs, located together with stairs and elevators in each corner. The retracted supports have enabled uninterrupted spaces indoor as well as continuity in the outer form. Variation will arise from shifts in light, as architecture always has.

Sustainable Strategies
The Student Union Building at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico is a highly efficient and sustainable facility responsive to the American Southwest climate and has achieved LEED Gold certification. This three-storey, 65,000-square-foot campus gateway building presents a series of interconnected and transparent volumes that are legible and inviting from the street. The building organizes a mix of one and two-storey program spaces around a threestorey light-filled atrium. Student lounge spaces on all three floors animate the atrium while this central space acts as a circulation hub connecting the program elements. The dramatic exterior cladding features black iornspot brick, weathered steel panels and a glazed aluminum curtain wall. To provide visibility and at the same time contain solar gain from the American Southwest climate, one of the first motorized sun tracking louver systems in North America was employed. The louvers are held two feet off the main façade on three sides of the building. This allows sun shading to the grade levels without compromising transparency and view. The system also drastically reduces mechanical loads.
Additional energy-saving initiatives include a geothermal well system with two chillers that meet 100 percent of the building’s heating and cooling needs. Energy-efficient lighting and electrical systems in combination with the sunshades reduce by 260,000 kilowatt-hours the annual energy use. With publicly accessible amenities at grade, the building connects the campus with the wider community. The ground floor contains a ballroom/conference facility, bookstore, theater, post office, convenience store and cafeteria. The upper floors include lounges, a computer lab, student services offices, a game room, meeting rooms and a dining area. Holding a central position in the composition is a student governance room that floats within the atrium space, bridging both wings of the new building. The third floor is set back under large extending roof planes, reducing the overall scale of the building and provides shade and covered terraces to the third floor occupants. Future green roofs to the north provide rooftop assembly areas and spectacular views to the mountains beyond.

The 297,000 sf, 7-story structure includes a full basement and provides 166 flexible lab modules and office space to house several hundred researchers and staff. At a construction cost of $111M, the LEED Gold structure consists of a block of offices which face north, capturing ambient light and dramatic views, while research laboratories form an L-shape on the south and east side of the site. At ground level, the building’s entrance admits visitors to a two-story public educational outreach gallery and multiple classrooms. With a state-of-the-art 245-seat auditoriumplanetarium, shaded entry and large arcades with exhibition spaces, this important gathering place communicates the facility’s exciting activities to the larger community, inspiring the next generation of researcher. Arizona State University has a long running commitment to sustainability and places high performance expectations upon all new buildings; the ISTB 4 Laboratory Building faced significant challenges in this regard. Its intensive research mission focusing on Space Exploration and Engineering combined with its location in the extreme heat of Tempe, Arizona create a tremendous energy
and resource demand. Numerous strategies were incorporated to minimize these loads, reduce operational costs and achieve the LEED Gold certification. This sustainability mission meant rethinking all aspects of a conventional lab building. Rather than the 12 air-changes per hour typical to a lab building, ISTB 4 incorporates a sophisticated active lab air quality management system that minimizes air changes until toxins are detected. Occupancy sensors were incorporated into the lighting system, office cooling systems, and laboratory fume hoods. The building was carefully sited, each elevation designed according to its solar orientation. Exposed glass was minimized on all but the north elevation. Water efficient landscaping and plumbing fixtures were selected as were low VOC paints and finishes. The project leverages the sustainable infrastructure at ASU and utilizes energy provided by both the campus Cogeneration Plant and an offsite 750 kW Photovoltaic System.

How can a place on the one hand fulfil an ambition for synergy, aiming to harmonise the channels linked to design and on the other hand express the identity of each specialty? How can it open itself up to the outside world whilst still retaining the exclusivity and intellectual protection required to produce the best design? How can we construct a building for a trend-setting institution, without at the same time linking it to a category? To do so, the institute must offer an “infrastructure” capable of producing design and of connecting it to the outside world. “The white sheet, the starting point of everything…” symbolises the new Hong Kong Design Institute. The raising of the Institute
enabled the base to be transformed into a large public space for interaction and the exchange of ideas, an urban space of which the key role is to encourage meetings and relaxation and to provide a natural green space. Therefore connectivity to the city appears virtually natural. The “pillars of education”, the four towers, are incorporated in the complex : they accommodate the classrooms and support the institute. They join together to merge into the “aerial city” that provides services and quieter places. In this way, the Design Institute includes the operational components between the sky and the ground, a complex that is typical of Hong Kong.

The building’s internal and external organization reinforces the transition from the high levels of the main educational campus down to the lower levels of the sports and residential campus. The building will be hosting the School of English Language Instructions (SELI). The total building area will be 17,500 m2 with 7 levels of the 150,000 m2 campus project. The building is located south-north direction and connecting the campus valley and the quad level with an internal void situated to the south facade, which is a buffer zone to reduce the heating and cooling capacity. The main spine of the building consists of 73 SELI classes/ 20
students and 17 offices separately at 5 levels. This building is the fifth phase of fast track construction of the academic campus for Ozyegin University (OZU), a new private Turkish university started in 2008. The SELI building is also Demo Site #5 of the NEED4B project. The whole campus is being designed and constructed aiming to become an example of sustainability and energy efficiency. The University aims to provide hands-on education to its students by providing them facilities that teach by example. All campus buildings are candidates for internationally known LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, but this new faculty building aims to go a step further in energy efficient issues.

Collège Lucie Aubrac is the first secondary school in the region to achieve the BBC label (Low Consumption Building). The project is located in the western part of the city of Tourcoing, in a primarily residential neighborhood along with some educational and social amenities. Due to its remarkable location at the edge of the city, along with its tranquil monumentality, the new school adds a new magnitude to the entry to the city. By opening up to two major axes, Industrial Boulevard and the street Fin de la guerre, the new building draws from the best of the natural conditions of the site. The overall organization of the project is fluid and comprehensible, allowing the visitor to orient themselves easily. The four principal poles of the school are defined and organized so that the elements linked to cultural activities are situated along the entry plaza, the teaching spaces form a “Uâ€? around a courtyard, the sport facilities are grouped to create a block of interior and exterior sport programs, and finally the cafeteria is organized along a vegetal axis that crosses from the garden of letters to the educational gardens.
A strong architectural identity is ensured by the use of a simple unifying palette of materials. The brick reflects the local materials but by using a contemporary colour and detailing it rises the building above the surroundings. It forms a ribbon wrapping the entire site which is perforated to give views across the site. The main teaching wing acts as a signal on the main boulevard. Clad in a perforated metal skin with a flash code motif, the building becomes a sign for the urban renewal of the area. Beyond a simple motif the flashcode will allow students and public to connect and interact with the college via the internet. Bringing nature into the heart of the college characterizes the teaching ambitions and the desire to create a relaxing environment conducive to learning. The teaching garden and the planted rooves bring a touch of landscape which also finds reference in the ecological approach to the building. As the first low energy college in the area, the building seeks with its visual identity and ambitious program to define a higher level of quality for the future of this area.

Location Amersfoort, the Netherlands
The Eemhuis combines a number of existing cultural institutes in the city of Amersfoort: the city library, the exposition center, the heritage archives and a school for dance, music and visual arts. It is located on an urban redevelopment area close to the city center. The building is organized as a stacking of the cultural programs. The public domain is continued into the interior of the building in all directions. At the ground floor, the public square becomes a covered plaza, with a grand cafĂŠ and entrances to the various functions. The exposition center is set directly off the square on the ground floor, with a large central exhibition hall that is half sunken in the ground and is surrounded by an enfilade of smaller exhibition rooms. The library is a plaza of stepped information terraces as a prolongation of the city square that brings the
visitors up to the main library floor. On the top of the stairs the library spills into a vast open space with book stacks and reading and study areas overlooking the city. Above it hovers the archive volume that forms the ceiling of this space. The attic of the building houses the arts school. The three arts departments (theatre & dance, visual arts and music) are each expressed separately as cantilevered beams that crown the complex. The façades are composed of a classical tripartite as imposed by the master plan. The plinth is made of 30 cm long elongated glazed bricks, reinforcing the horizontal lining. The crown of the building is made of metal panels with a dotted pattern of semispheres that enhance the alienating quality of the cantilevered volumes against the northern Dutch clouds.

Location Garenne-Colombes, France
In the cultural project located in Garenne-Colombes near Paris in the suburb, we continue to produce sustainable architectural and think that the light and measurement are the 2 convergent components to create space. The lines of the sun create a variation, which transforms the concrete, crystallizing it of the solid state towards a luminous halation. Only the apparent neutrality of this material can produce such effects of dematerialization while being illuminated. The facade is made of thin printed glasses, which create shadows and moving light inside. More than like a tree the project looks life a cloud. As a XXI century library, the idea of the new numeric world for knowledge is visible. The contrast between this cloud facade and the white concrete that capture the light create space. Passing from the matter to luminous, the wall is put in scene and
its visible variation modifies the perception of the place inducing of the behaviours, the attitudes, the different feelings according to the seasons and the hours. This feeling of time implies calms and measures. Other dimension, that of the module created by the unevenness’s during the casting of the very liquid and fluid self-compacting concrete. They are the elements of the capelins components of the forms installation. These lines of module of 90 cm by 2,26m appear in the light The shade marks the human scale. Finally to conclude the surface tension from material and its constructive aptitudes return the tension of the skin of surface even more pregnant. This tension creates the movement, therefore space. Movement and displacement of the light is one of the concept to think life in buildings. Environmental is also life. 211

Inaugurated in 1965 (original design by Eduardo Mendes Guimarães Júnior and Gaspar Garreto) as the second largest stadium in the world, the Mineirão Stadium is located in the surroundings of the Pampulha Lagoon, close to Oscar Niemeyer’s and Burle Marx seminal work, being part of Belo Horizonte’s main postcard. As Brazil was chosen to host the World Cup 2014, opportunity came about to transform the traditional stadium, which façade is heritage listed, into a contemporary multifunctional sports facility. The New Mineirão aims to go beyond its primary role as a world-‐class sports arena, also offering a range of services, commerce, culture and entertainment for the city, becoming a new hub of activities integrated to the modernist landscape of the leisure and touristic Pampulha complex. As for the original architecture of the Stadium, basically only the outer “shell” remained: the 88 structural semi-‐ porticos, the concrete roof and the upper tiers. The rest of the “core” was completely rebuilt to guarantee the total overhaul inside the arena, including the new extension of the roof, all the new program and infra-‐ structure, besides the lowering of the pitch and the lower tiers redesign, improving the sight-‐lines
for the new capacity of 62.160 seats. The renovation on the outside is total, with a new 200.000 m² operational platform separating the spectators´ from the accredited flow. The “Esplanade” includes various facilities around the stadium, opened to the public as an immense landscaped plaza, visually linked to the Pampulha Lagoon. This platform is sculpted and molded to the site as an artificial topography, integrated with the immediate surroundings, being perceived as a continuation of the street domain. Thus, the public is attracted by programs strategically distributed throughout the esplanade, creating areas with potential to generate activities and movement during all day, seven days a week. The project has also sustainable features, using solar energy, reusing rainwater, as well as efficient lighting systems, intelligent control of energy and so on (LEED Certification). After the event, many operational areas which are specific for the 2014 World Cup will have other uses (institutional, commercial and leisure programs), contributing for the economic sustainability of the complex.

Built on 12 hectares in the Basroch neighborhood, the building is indeed a visible architectural beacon, marking the major vehicular (interstate) entrance into the city. This pared-down building with program-induced volumes stands up against the horizon, this skyline of shadows reveals the omnipresent nature of the landscape. The project was elaborated from a simple parallelogram monolith, responsive to the specific technical requirements established by the client. Our own strategies of sustainability combined with the client’s respect for ecology, culminated in a building that is at the forefront of environmental responsibility. The « Stadium du Littoral » realizes significant energy savings. Built to the stringent THPE 2005 standards (eq. LEED – Leadership in Energy Efficient Design), the stadium is made of durable
materials. Reinforced insulation, two heat pumps and an alternate flow ventilation system avoid heat loss. The interior utilizes low emission lighting. 1,000 m2 of photovoltaic panels built into the roof produce electricity sold back to the grid. This strategy allows for a significant reduction in operating costs. Additionally, 40 m2 of solar panels cover 50% of hot water energy requirements. The system for energy production will soon be completed by the installation of a wind turbine to the north of the site. The Stadium is also equipped with a rainwater storage system. A cistern of 8 m3 capacity provides water for toilets and cleaning. At full build-out, the Stadium Littoral will become a carbon positive leader in the family of public projects that produce more energy than they consume.

Atelier Novembre (Marc Iseppi & Jacques Pajot) The real issues of the architect based primarily on his " stance " of the city ( urban ) and territory (story) . It focus on finding links or weaves must build a building with its context, must be the starting point but also the focus of any project. Understand the makers guess users to better define the contours. Our dual training ( dplg + ENSAD ) confirmed us in this quest for harmony - the inside and the outside - and meaning, imposing on us the idea that the timelessness of an architecture or development comes more than quality of relationships they establish that an accumulation of signs and forms. The project area is rich. It requires both , the total exploration of the fields of composition and attachment to the building process by a constant pragmatic concern and a real responsibility to the issues it raises . In the absence of a priori, the serenity of the analysis requires rigor and sensitivity based on observation and listening, in a support process , enriched our experience of cities or areas.

Acton Ostry Architects
Since its inception in 1992, Acton Ostry Architects (AOA) has demonstrated a continuing commitment to the making of architecture that responds thoughtfully to local topography, climate, culture and to lessons learned from buildings inherited from the past. Russell Acton and Mark Ostry, the founding Principals, lead the firm with three associates and twenty-six architectural staff, five that are LEED accredited professionals. The values of the practice embody a consideration to sustainable design that is without willful extravagance. Their design approach incorporates new technologies and materials that contribute to the realization of projects rooted in a considered, modernist idiom that offer sustenance to those that inhabit and experience them. They are dedicated to the practice of architecture that positively and effectively contributes to the values and aspirations of the clients and communities we serve. Acton Ostry Architects are experienced in a wide range of building types, both new construction and adaptive reuse. Their projects are grounded in extensive research into the historical, social and cultural context of their surroundings. They recognize the importance of planning, landscape and building design that adapts to changing client, occupant and technological needs.
OLGGA Hardwired for the same shared passion for design, Alice Vaillant, Guillaume Grenu and Nicolas Le Meur have built OLGGA’s core philosophy around an architecture that is pure, direct and responsible. Based in Paris, the studio was created in 2006, its founders fresh out of architecture school. Ever since the creation of a satellite office in Lille in 2008, the studio has changed its collective dynamic that makes collective risk-taking a generator of good design. Today, three people-as individual they are parts of a whole--make up OLGGA. But first, what we all want to know: why «OLGGA»? Don’t rack your brain figuring out the funky acronym, it is quite simply a girl’s name, as dynamic and playful as their design ethos.
