PREFACE 1 As designers, we challenge ourselves beyond guidelines and dare to start new trends, always adding some fun and twists to design, as well as awakening the senses.

Good design should communicate; weather by conveying a message, or by provoking emotions. It should be a statement to be perceived to create a lasting impression through the individual’s perception. At Vick Vanlian, when designing, we utilize and play on the senses wherever possible: Touch, Smell, Sight, and Sound, as they are all parts of experiencing any space, be it interiors or architecture, and bringing individuality, beauty & harmony to every project/space; any attractive atmosphere makes us think how and why things are made. When starting any project, the clients should be heard, and guided to express their thoughts, expectations and perceptions visually. In the process, the designer’s job is to bond with the client, and get to dive into their personalities to push them to get out of their comfort zones in terms of experimenting with them to come up with a finished product that is essentially a reflection of themselves; opposed to what is trendy, normal, or a reproduction of something already familiar to them. My main goal and inspiration in all my projects

is to capture the different instances in life, and create different emotional bonds to awaken and provoke the senses. This is achieved by mixing and playing with the following: – The vintage: reminiscing the past. A wonderfully, beautiful era to recreate in your home. it is about 1940's glamor and the end of World War II. It is extremely nostalgic and looks to an elegant time in history for influences. I find most people relate to this style and types of spaces when looking to decorate their homes, as it is elegant, warm and takes them back in time. – The futuristic and innovative: exploring new technologies to push boundaries and shapes we can introduce and accomplish. – The pop culture: which is what we live by now, today. using images of popular as opposed to elitist culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture. A splash of pop always adds color, humor and fun to any space; making it bold, individual and personal, and therefore extremely unique. – The urban: adding nontraditional home materials and design features traditionally used

in an industrial sense; such as: galvanized steel, concrete floors, metal, exposed beams and unfinished surfaces to create a distinctly modern, bohemian look. In more upscale urban interiors, we aim for a far more polished look, with bespoke fixtures, sophisticated finishes and open floor plans that allow for multifunctional rooms. Diversity and cultural mix co-existence have brought us to love the city life and the flexibility for every changing functionality it demands. We adore items that scream metropolis living. Mixing and playing around with the elements above you can come up with a modern, cosy and yet fun and extremely unique and personal atmosphere that can evolve with time as you use it, add or reduce from it. Life is short and sometimes we tend to forget to enjoy every second of our precious lives. If I have one advice to give people when designing or redesigning their spaces, it would be to live you dream, make it your own and make the world a better place; and always remember: “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” – Quote by: William Arthur Ward.

PREFACE 2 My earliest childhood memories are of drawing and trying to create something magical with pencil and paper. Those of us who choose to pursue professional interior design are responsible for taking a client's space and transforming it into the dream they describe‌that kind of change is so exciting to see! So, how is this achieved?

Each designer in this book understands that it's critical to have a strong intuition for what people really mean when they're telling you what they want. We need to have a good sense of design, but a great sense of how to take care of people. A luxurious space is one which translates a visual dream into a physical reality. If the vision for a rich, cozy space, does that mean leather, brass and velvet? Or heavy linen and natural wood? If the idea is to create a light, bright space, will that mean an all-white space with lots of glass? Or bright colors and plenty of sunshine? Interpreting the meaning of a client's direction is a critical element in delivering what he or she is expecting. I begin each project by doing a design study with the client, pouring over images of other spaces they admire, which helps me

to deliver the look they are expecting. Then, we discuss their lifestyle and how they hope to live in the space. Do they like to entertain, or prefer quiet family time? Do we need to create spaces especially designed for children and young families, or will this be a more formal residence? Unlike commercial design, when you're working in a client's residence, the emphasis is on the small elements that will make for a comfortable, nurturing daily life. Considerations are more personal and more nuanced in someone's home than in a restaurant or hotel. My specialty is helping people who love something about traditional style, but want to approach it in a fresh, modern way. My strongest visual influence is the natural world,

and that harkens back to my earlier work as a ceramic artist. It's difficult to find a manmade motif or texture which is any more beautiful than those we find nature. I love elegant, accessible, luminous design. The idea of bringing modern and natural elements into a traditional space is a cornerstone of my approach. Every day is something new. I hope you will find inspiration and direction from the pages of this book, which showcase the talent of incredible designers from all over the world. As you look at each space, remember that the whole is the sum of its parts! Each detail is worth its weight.

How to help a young couple who loved the traditional bones of their new home, but wanted a decisive shift in its decor and vibe to modern luxe? Opening the kitchen into the family room and reworking the architecture of the space was the solution to creating the fresh feeling we were after. The house had an interior that was an odd mix of styles, genres, and materials, so the designers began by pulling down the 2-story walls of oak paneling, replacing the heavy fireplace, overhauling the kitchen and master bath, while cleaning up the complicated architectural details throughout. The foyer was originally cluttered by unecessary columns and included an odd circular opening to the floor above. The designers streamlined

behind the fireplace, so that the room remains uncluttered. Creating a bar between the kitchen and family room also contributed to the space feeling more conducive for entertaining, while allowing light through an opening wrapped in mosaic tile. The formal living room was recast as a bronzy, sultry lounge for cactching up over cocktails after work and listening to music rather than more the formal visits generally associated with a proper living room. Across the hall is the dining room, which was wrapped in icy blues drawn from the snowy owl painting. During visits by the family members, a beautiful and comfortable space for long lingering meals together was an important requirement, so this room was a design

focus. Still, the directive was that the furnishings and materials be highly functional, free from worry about red wine spills or furry family friends napping on sofas. The designers delivered by covering upholstery

For the family room, the designers designed a simple, contemporary gas fireplace to replace the existing heavy stone version, and developed a smooth plaster 2-story mantle to replace the outdated oak paneling. A/V components are carefully hidden in recessed panels

One of the goals of the project was to create a space that reflected the young homeowners’ fun, energetic personalities, and also prepare for their expanding family. Before the renovation and redesign, the home had great bones but no architectural importance. Jeffers Design Group added a new fireplace, built-in shelving in the living room, and transformed a plain office into a vintage inspired library. The library features floor to ceiling bookcases with full with a bourbon bar, relaxed seating and incredible lights. The owners and their friends often gravitate to this unique space when hosting parties because of the unique aspects and distinctly cool vibe.

his contemporary home is located in a small, prestigious property development cluster in Sandhurst, Johannesburg an area with a genteel, leafy calm about it but also provides easy access to much of the vibrant city. The brief was to express an individual ambient character but maintain a calm and uncluttered elegance. Every vase, sculpture, artwork and furniture object is given enough meditative space to allow it to be seen and appreciated. The interiors contain solid forms, softened with geometric shapes which highlight the owner’s collection of local South African art.

The home also had to speak to the client’s love of art and fine entertaining. This five bedroomed house was designed to be a multi-functional home for family, friends and executive guests. On the ground floor, there is a formal lounge, double volume entertainment bar, cinema, double volume study and office, an informal family TV lounge with open plan kitchen, a formal dining area and a large reception area. All the ground floor spaces open to extensive outdoor garden space with pool and pool deck

personal space. The master bedroom is a true haven and allows for an escape within the bustling city center. It has extensive “his and hers” dressing area, plus a steam shower sauna, bath and shower. The client has an extensive European-based art collection and was eager to acquire contemporary South African works from both up and coming and established local artists, allowing for an African residence with an African collection, hence all artworks were new acquisitions put forward by the

The darker hues of the exterior surfaces are in stark contrast to the light filled and fresh interior, the designer wanted a transition, a mood shift, a different experience from outside to in. The grey wall on the upstairs mezzanine area is a heavily textured, crystallite surface that brings a raw, brute finish to the interior, bringing the outside in and helps delineate

his stylish, colorful Central Park West apartment is the result of a whimsical dialogue between art and design. With the direction to design something “different” for its young owners, D’Aquino Monaco set out to push the envelope and transform the classic bones of the apartment into an irreverent, yet playful, space. Accompanying the 20th-century Italian and French antiques that harmonize with sculptural modern art, the designer chose to emphasize color and art to draw visitors on a journey through the apartment.

165

166

In the foyer, as an introduction to the rest of the apartment, the designer focused on reinvigorating the moldings. To establish a sculptural identity for the entrance and remove all traces of the original prewar classical crown molding, new moldings were designed to be pixelated and geometric to catch the light and make a statement. To set the tone for the apartment, the designer made a statement in the living room with dynamic color and a dialogue between the eclectic pieces that were meticulously selected for their style, essence and humor. A Lucite sculpture of a head by Jim Shaw was transformed into a coffee table with the artist’s permission. The color palette for the living room area rug of silk and wool by Tai Ping Carpets reverses when moving into the Library, where

the neutrals on the floor contrast the vibrant red wall color. To accompany the sculptural table, Italian chandelier and modern Danish shelving system, the designer worked again with Tai Ping to design the faux stone rug to incorporate nature in a subtle and soft way. The designer “love for all things in the 1940’s, particularly Italian” is expressed in the extensive use of Fornasetti wallpaper lining the kitchen, breakfast room and laundry. With the introduction of green, the baby’s room gives a nod to the surrounding Central Park. A soft shag over a wall-to-wall rug creates a soft and playful space.

Yet, it needed to be a space, which would be a perfect entertaining space. The designers completely stripped the whole apartment back to a shell, designed and built a new kitchen, bathrooms, a walk in wardrobe, wet room and laundry space. The flat was rewired. The designers installed a seamless resin floor throughout, inclusive of thermal subfloor instead of existing radiators. The space is full of quiet and warm feeling.

ocated in the city of Sao Paulo, this house of 600 m2 was designed for a family with the goal of being a place to live, entertain friends and collecting art and design. The furniture features a mixture of pieces of vintage furniture, antiques, furniture Italian, French and Scandinavian design. Each environment is determined by furniture bright colors like red in the gourmet kitchen, orange in the dining room and blue in the living room. The house was designed with large windows and doors that allows the daylight to be present in all environments. The doors, windows and wide passages with the intention to reduce the boundaries and integrate the internal and external spaces, create a vertical garden with tropical plants in the dining room. Living in a grand mirror over the fireplace reflects the views of the gardens expanding the sense of oasis. ick Vanlian holds this innovative project in very high esteem due to the collaborative process and friendship that sprung from working with the client. The home’s décor and design are described by Vanian as “very strong, mixed with the soft elegance of the furniture selection, which is the perfect reflection of the home’s owner, as well as a balance of classic sleek contemporary design with bold three dimensional shapes.”

283

284

The client was extremely involved in the project from the start and in every aspect possible, which culminated in a home that is “innovative, time honored, luxurious, geometric and absolutely stunning” and a true reflection of its undoubtedly proud owner. One of the primary inspiration for this project is considered to be lines. Lines were created and repeated in a way inspired by the lines found in a diamond pattern, using it in many of the details. These lines can be found in the tiling layout, the dinner table’s structure and selected coffee tables and door handles. Lines also extend vertically to create sculptural threedimentional walls that dominate the center volume of the space, concealing the kitchen and creating a dynamic contrast with the classical treatment of the rest of the walls in the apartment. A Busnelli sofa makes a crucial focal point as it drives home the evolution of the dwelling’s classic/modern interpretation. Two Futuro armchairs, from the Beyond collection by Vick Vanlian, are then added to push the boundaries of design and dare to experiment with mix of styles, colors and textures to produce the unique vision and style that is Vick. One of the most intriguing design features in the house is the clandestine television in a hidden closet. Vick believes that the television would occupy too much space in the main living area and interrupt the space’s formal atmosphere. So rather than allowing it to interrupt the flow, the television was tucked away from sight with the help of an ingenious innovation.

he rooms in this home of mid-century Georgian-style pulsate with color and contemporary art and furniture. Combining contemporary furnishings and art with a traditional style, the home is deftly managed by the interior designer, Mary Anne Smiley, of Dallas, Texas, using subtle techniques and elements of design with great skill. To give this basic traditional home an airy contemporary feeling, all walls and wood moldings were painted pure white. Skillful selections of soft contemporary furnishings of proper scale to fit the space were added to create inviting upscale living spaces appropriate to the family’s entertaining life style. Subtle use of contrasting textures and finishes such as silver leather shag rug, deep rich wood, shiny chrome, rough bronze table base, nubby silk, sleek leather, art glass table top, and ultra-suede accent pillows, create an understated sophistication.

288

289

290

Known for her bold use of color, Mary Anne says, “The way to get color right is to start without it. I love this approach, as it gives me a blank canvas to use color as I want on everything else and creates a lovely platform for those colors to zing! Though I am known for my fearless use of color, what people often miss is that I rarely use strong or bright color on walls. The color usually comes in small doses in finish materials and furnishings so that the colors can be used in their most intense and vibrant hues. A little bit of pure red, turquoise, or shocking pink, can be exciting, while a lot can be overwhelming and uncomfortable. Thus, neutral backgrounds are essential to add balance. The family room of this project is a great example. The family room visually seems to vibrates with exuberant color. Yet, only small accents on pillows and small tables are actually rendered in bright colors. The colors are selected very intentionally to compliment the acrylic art work adding unity to the design. The largest areas of color-walls, floor, and furniture are left as neutrals of white and gray which allow the bright colors in art and accents to come alive without overwhelming the space.

This spectacular villa designed by Kelly Hoppen MBE and situated in the picturesque south of France near Antibes was a challenge for the celebrated British interior designer. The London-based client, who had a traditional taste, wanted a very classic home, something with lots of colour and something very beautiful, but not too feminine in its overall look. As with all of her projects, the designer started with a neutral base and then built on this with accents of colour in each

Heveningham dining table, whilst relishing the spectacular views from the terrace. The light linen fabrics used for the cushions contribute to the relaxed feel while the ornate Guadarte chandeliers add a touch of glamour. With the eye-catching pink Moissonnier table at the centre as well as the pink velvet borders on the curtains, the entrance hall is a truly unique space and quite different to anything the designer has designed before. The clients’ favourite colour is

he client for this project is a fun, loving, and lively person. The designers felt her unique sole should be present through her home’s personality. Her family’s home should be in tune with their love for art and top notch elements; whether it was an accessory or a lighting piece, the designers buckled it down to the last detail. The client wanted a vacation house; meaning it must be fresh, fun, and ought to give an airy feel of the space, and become an escape zone from anything routine like. This dictated and influenced the use of bright colors, nature inspired patterns and textures in almost every corner of the space. This dictated and influenced the use of bright colors, nature inspired patterns and textures in almost every corner of the space. 391

392

The design is colorful and vibrant to essentially resemble its inhabitants and therefore, the project was named “The House of Joy”. The concept behind this home design was to work on vivacious styles, soft and sturdy textures and interpret colors in each space in a homogenous yet uniquely illustrated for the personal space. Starting from the entrance, the reception area wall speaks out with wave like textures that creates movement and adds dynamism to the space. The designers also added a beautiful sturdy Versace console and a sculpture by international artist Bruno Catalano that gave the space a well grounded feel. The main entrance wall is then contrasted with a subtle Oriental Moucharabieh that separates the TV family room, and the main living space. A mirror is then integrated in this element to give the illusion of a greater perspective to the space. Pop art works such as “Hands up” by Donadini and “Taxi” by Gerstein are displayed in the family room showcasing the collection of the client. As entering the reception area, the elegance of the space as a whole is demonstrated through the fine points of our execution and custom designed furniture, which made this space one of a kind residence. The classical mixed-style furniture made the Vick Vanlian way and contrasted with the bright colors, nature-inspired patterns and textures; every corner of the space sends positive vibes and energy. Sophisticated wall and ceiling treatments, as well as lighting selections and accessories are what made it so sensuous. As shifting from one space to another, the transitions are studied carefully and made visible by the use of colors and a strong design backbone. Pop art works, rugs of floral or geometric motifs, personalized added details, all masterfully orchestrated together with elegance to convey the free, life loving, joyful personalities and lives of the owners.
