ART DECO

Art Deco,

ART DECO

Art Deco

ART DECO

Art Deco

4.Art Deco

5.Art Deco

al D’Amour Apartments, is at 854 South Oxford Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, whose feature is the 1930s architecture style in Los Angeles.

This example of the Zigzag (Art Deco) Moderne, exhibits a wide array of characteristic cast ornament. At each side of the entrance two kneeling male figures (in relief) hold the heavy and elaborate ornament entablature on their shoulders and back. Other cast concrete decorative works occur in the recessed spandrels and upon the principal parapet. The vertical row of open fire escape balconies provide additional areas of sculpture and the major vertical piers terminate above the roof in stylized male figures. 010

H. Buell, a well-known Denver architect and the firm was Rapp & Rapp, designed the Paramount Theater in 1930. As a representative of the Art Deco style, the theater stands as the last remaining "movie palace" in the metropolitan area. Designed in the period of silent films, and opened as sound motion pictures became the rage, the theater bridges the gap between two entertainment eras. The Paramount also houses the only Publix One Wurlitzer theater organ to be equipped with twin consoles.

any of the furnishings throughout the club are original and have been restored for the City Club. The massive black marble and brass table in the Cafe had never been moved prior to the

1988 renovation which revealed that each re-carpeting of the room was accomplished by cutting around the huge legs of the table. Located in the foyer are two types of cocktail tables: black Bakelite and chrome (singularly modern materials of the 1930s) and the smaller "game" tables of copper and glass. Two large sofas, with woodwork carved by artist Raymond Puccinelli, feature animals in repose. The "Ionic" bronze benches and the

In addition to those mentioned above, Pflueger, Goodman and Stackpole used a wide variety of local and imported materials in creating The Club's magnificent rooms. Belgian Blue and St. Genevieve Golden Vein marbles combine in the monumental fireplace of the Main Dining Room. Hungarian Ash wainscoting below Avadir veneer walls are joined with ebony and pear wood window casings. At 1,046 feet (319 m),the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931.It is still the tallest brick building in the world, albeit with an internal steel skeleton. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the secondtallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 1,200-foot (365.8 m) Bank of America Tower, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition, The New York Times Building, which opened in 2007, is exactly level with the Chrysler Building in height. Both buildings were then pushed into 4th position, when the under construction One World Trade Center surpassed their height.

T

he House of Soviets is the office building built in Stalinist style in the late 1930s in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad). It is located in the Moskovsky District of Saint Petersburg.

According to Soviet projects, the House of Soviets was planned to host the administration of Soviet Leningrad government. The location was chosen on undeveloped south outskirts of the city away from the downtown area which was prone to frequent floods. The construction was completed just before the Nazi invasion of Soviet Union at the beginning of World War II, and the building was never used for the intended purpose. In 1941, it was fortified and used as a local command post for Soviet Red Army during the Siege of Leningrad. Surviving reminders of that stronghold are small bunkers built from a reinforced concrete which still stand at several corners of the House of Soviets. Later, the building housed the Soviet research institute which focused on the design of electronic components for military objects. Among the notable engineers who worked there are two post-World War II defectors from the US, Alfred Sarant and Joel Barr. Currently, the office space in the building is rented out to various businesses. 102
