Ground Floor Plan
Comprising three occupied floors and approximately 23,000 square feet of abovegrade retail with an additional 55,000 square feet of below-grade retail space, The Cubes was conceived as a Jewel Box icon to flank the western edge of the plaza. The glass and steel structure solidifies the plaza’s prominence as an active destination by surrounding the plaza, including below grade, with spaces for retail, restaurants and rest. The Cubes also incorporates multiple outdoor spaces totaling 4,300 square feet. A palette of rich materials was employed for the plaza including large granite slab pavements and steps, stainless steel edging, and custom designed benches

in granite and ipe hardwood. The introduction of moveable tables and chairs and the layout of benches create opportunities for socialization throughout. The building employs a part of several distinct rectilinear volumes shifted in relation to one another, which provides a contrast to the monolithic character of adjacent 1095 Avenue of the Americas while continuing the uniformity of its rectilinear grid. Positioned as a gateway to Times Square and functioning like an extension of Bryant Park, The Cubes and the plaza at 1095 Avenue of the Americas turn this stretch of 42nd Street from a throughway into a destination.

At 2.2 m sq.ft, Puerto Venecia is Europe’s largest leisure and retail destination on the edge of the city of Zaragoza, Spain. It is a place uniquely set in the beauty of the pine forest with an innovative sports and leisure lake at its heart. Macgregor Smith acted as Landscape Architects and “Place Making” Consultant, working with L35 to enrich the visitor experience through its streets, squares, canals, lakes and parks, from concept through implementation to completion. It was completed in October 2012. The Lake is a central part of the personality of Puerto Venecia. Water is the main activity feature with competitive events and shows occurring all year round. Attractive and quiet walkways contrast with the exciting esplanade bars and cafes. Their role involved working with Spanish designers to achieve high quality presentation from concept to implementation and maintenance. 018

The gathering spaces and water bodies are drawn together by a treatment aimed at creating a special Sense of Place. Their aim is to create a framework of landscape which echoes that of the Spanish region of Aragon; its physical components of stone, water, pine trees and its culture. A thread of artwork winds through the park, seen in individual works of art or a narrative sometimes in the pavement. The landscape treatment occasionally changes into eye-catching, fun and colourful landscape in key plazas. The day and night uses of the development is reflected in a vibrant lighting scheme.

Design Description
In order to step out of the conventional malls, extensive plants were imported to create an ambiance of forest and nature.
The concept is to step out of the conventional malls and their parking lots and to create an ambiance of forest and nature.
Overview
In order to make this concept come true 6 acres of green spaces were created within this (15 acres with the outside of the ring) with 43,000 plants. Nearly 500 mature trees were imported and now contribute to the unique image of the project in terms of landscape design.
Part of the economic development policy of the urban of Angers Loire Métropole, the Atoll is a retail park specialized in housing furniture. The site is located in the municipality of Beaucouzé, on the edge of the urban and rural area. The importance given to the landscape design was the cornerstone of the project.

The City Creek Center redevelopment project in downtown Salt Lake City is the largest mixed-use urban project to be built in the US in recent years and consists of six residential towers, several mixed-use buildings, and a large retail component. When SWA arrived on this project, the clients wanted to redevelop an aging and failing retail center into a mixed-use asset for all Salt Lake City to enjoy. City Creek Center is LEED Silver certified and is the initial project in a city-wide revitalization effort known as Downtown Rising. While many may have looked at Salt Lake City’s large superblocks as obstacles to overcome, the design team and ownership believed the blocks held great opportunity. By bisecting the blocks and filling in with this urban landscape, there was an opportunity to insert a pedestrian layer into the

old urban fabric to complement existing transit flows and create a new scale, a new texture, and a new urban design model for the city. Intended retail success and the inclusion of a creek which authentically recreates characteristics of the real City Creek was of utmost importance to client and owner groups. SWA built full-scale off-site mock-ups of the creek cascades instilling stakeholders with the confidence that this naturalistic creek could be set on-structure atop seismic considerations 25% higher than those in San Francisco. Since its opening on March 22, 2012, retailers here boast the highest sales out of any of their stores attributing the success to the overall revolutionary design moves featuring a landscape centered approach.

Park Ventures Ecoplex is a mixed-use project consisting of office, retail, and luxury hotel space. This addition to Bangkok’s evolving skyline highlights the city’s progression towards a more environmentally and culturally sustainable phase. Located on a two-acre existing brownfield site in a prominent urban area of metroBangkok, the project serves as an “urban lung” to one of the City’s most highly congested intersection. For this unique venture, the client team envisioned a sustainable world-class project that would achieve the best building and living standards for its tenants and the community. The concept of an urban park at Park Ventures was inspired by the idea of bringing
nature back to the city fabric and this concept also serves as the core tenet of the Ecoplex which has achieved USGBC’s LEED CS (Core and Shell) Platinum status. The challenge of designing and organizing green areas was in being able to express sustainability in an urban environment that is part of a much larger and complex metropolitan network. The design therefore focuses on communicating a message that sustainability in tightly developed cityscape can be achieved through considerations of well-planned open spaces with universal access, balancing of budget and time constraints with available technology, as well as encouraging the use of informative design and natural materials that are safe and durable.

企业生态园是一个集办公、零售和豪华酒店于一体的综合项目。企业园的 建成不仅拓展了曼谷的城市天际线，同时也标志着曼谷的城市建设进入了一个 更环保和文化可持续发展的阶段。在一个城市最拥挤的十字路口增添这样一座 生态建筑，无疑会成为“城市之肺”。为此，委托人希望把企业生态园打造成 一个可持续发展的世界一流项目，实现办公和人居的完美结合。 打造企业园的城市公园的概念，其灵感来源于把大自然带回城市建筑的设 想，这也是生态综合体建筑 (Ecoplex) 的核心原则，这座绿色建筑取得了美国 绿色建筑协会 LEED 的 CS( 核心和外壳 ) 白金认证。如何设计和组织绿化区 尤其是一个巨大的挑战，因为绿化区不仅要能表达城市环境的可持续发展 , 也 是庞大而复杂的城市网的一部分。本案的成功设计进一步说明，发达国家城市 景观的可持续性可以通过下列方式来实现：精心设计开放空间，利用先进技术 平衡预算和时间，以及鼓励使用信息设计和安全耐用的天然材料。

Hotel Modera is a complete renovation of an existing motor lodge in downtown Portland, Oregon. It reflects the region’s pedestrian friendly indoor-outdoor culture with an emphasis on sustainable, high quality design. A new courtyard, featuring a living wall, is conceived as a microcosm of the city and surrounding natural environment. This modern outdoor room provides guests and Portlanders an urban oasis in which to gather and unwind. A wood boardwalk sheltered by a steel and glass canopy draws visitors and guests into the courtyard from the light rail transit mall along the sidewalk toward the hotel lobby. To the north of the boardwalk an outdoor dining/lounge area, paved in

decomposed granite, is located adjacent to a new restaurant. Three cor-ten steel gas fire troughs, filled with orange glass cullet pieces, provide ambiance in the evenings and serve as center points for gatherings. Moveable furniture allows flexibility in seating arrangements for large or small groups. The living wall is a pixilated abstraction of the Pacific Northwest itself, alluding to its rusty outcroppings of stone set within the rich textures and colors of the surrounding forests. The use of fruiting native plant material in the living wall and planting areas provides forage for urban wildlife. The overall effect is implicit of the integration of city and nature.

The Santa Monica Place project transformed an existing, under-performing, outdated shopping mall into a vibrant retail and civic destination. Intense local pressures guided the decision to leave the original footprint of the existing mall intact, while removing the roofline to create an open air center. What was once a dark, almost windowless suburban center has been transformed into a breezy, sunlit social destination that fully engages the local community and its surroundings. Long views of the ocean, Santa Monica Beach and Pier inspired the open air dining deck as well as design details and reference points throughout the project. The proximity of this project to the ocean serves as a touchstone for both landscape and hardscape design concepts. Oceanic themes are presented and repeated throughout the project through subtle use of color, form or texture. At the main entrances to the center, visitors are channeled through curving sloped walls that vary in height
as if they’ve been eroded by tide and time. Conceptually, visitors feel that they are walking beneath the sea surrounded by planters that represent clam shells and bubbles. Drought tolerant, light adaptive succulents mimic coral reefs, sponges and fans. “Urban Kelp” forests created by intertwining vines rise vertically on custom detailed stainless steel cables. Culminating at the center of the mall, the effect of a waxing and waning moon can be felt by the presence of a tidal pool water feature. The sound and visual play of the fountain, which represents the spouting of a dolphin, draw crowds near. Paving throughout the center – a collage of sand colored enhanced concrete seeded with crushed seashells and large swaths of charcoal silica sand – mimic the ocean floor and shadows cast by massive sea creatures and overhead clouds.

Site Plan 圣塔莫妮卡购物中心项目是将现有的一个不景气且过时的购物中心改造成 一个生机勃勃的零售休闲中心。迫于当地政府的压力，原有的购物中心必须保 存完好，而仅仅将屋顶移除，变成一个露天购物中心。改造后，原先那个昏暗 无窗的市郊中心变成了一个阳光普照、清风微拂的商业街，与当地社区及周边 环境浑然一体。 受大海、圣塔莫妮卡海滩和码头美景启发，设计了露天餐饮亲水平台，以 及各种细节与参考点。以亲海为主题的景观设计和硬质景观设计成为本项目设 计的试金石。通过微妙的色彩、形状或纹理的变化等将海洋主题反复呈现并贯 穿整个项目的始终。在中心大门口，游客沿着宛如被潮汐和时间侵蚀的高低起 伏的墙群前行。游客仿佛走在海底世界，花槽代表蛤壳和气泡。耐旱适光的肉 质植物似海底的珊瑚礁、海绵动物和扇状物。海洋主题景观中的“城市海藻” 森林，是相互缠绕的藤蔓沿着定制的细钢丝绳向上攀升而形成的景观。 广场的中心是景观设计的主打地，潮汐池水景见证了月亮的阴晴圆缺。喷 泉的声音和视觉效果模拟了海豚的喷射，吸引着附近的人群前来观赏。平铺在 广场中心的是一幅抽象拼贴沙画，由有色的强化混凝土饰以压碎的贝壳和大面 积的炭硅砂构成，模拟海底和由巨大的海洋生物和头顶的白云投射的阴影。

A rejuvenated urban plaza is the core to improving the retail and commercial viability of this renovated 1960’s building. ASPECT Studios were engaged to develop a design that assists with rejuvenating the public realm for the building, in line with the architectural refit. The landscape and building have a strong visual connection through the façade and paving treatments. The planting design for the project includes mature Magnolias as the centre piece of the landscape. The Magnolias will provide assistance with wind mitigation whilst being a major visual node in the middle of both plazas. The space includes formal seated areas for the retail spaces and informal areas for the local inhabitants to have lunch.

Liverpool Department Stores, the largest department store chain in Mexico, contracted Thomas Balsley Associates to design a green roof and park to be placed over its new flagship location in the upscale Mexico City neighborhood of Interlomas. In an area that currently suffers from a dearth of public open space, the new Sky Park gives locals a retreat from urban life and serves as a green roof prototype for future big-box retail developments in Mexico. The rooftop park’s extensive program is distributed around a food market and consists of discrete precincts for children’s play, teenagers, husbands, events and fashion shows: a terrace, event plaza, lawns and intimate seating. By circumventing the food court, a promenade accommodates both circulation needs and movable café seating, establishing an armature for additional nodes of activity and use. Further out in the radius of the plan, the entire rooftop is ringed by a landscape of indigenous planting, flowering trees and shrubs, vines and perennials. 098
Landform modulations and complex subsurface accommodations have allowed for 14” caliper specimen oaks to be strategically placed throughout the park where scale and shade are best introduced. The palette of materials for the rooftop is cool and restrained: the promenade is a rich wood deck and the seat walls that carve out spaces are a pure white pre-cast concrete. Steel reaches skyward in the form of a shade structure, vine trellis, and feature wall. The serpentine and stepped teen court looks onto an illuminated glass walkway that will become a fashion runway for monthly events. Water is another important element that is carefully incorporated into the park to animate and buffer spaces, to provide a compelling sense of play and whimsy, and to introduce an air of serenity and mystery. Water runnels and a mist forest sculpture activate the play area, fog formations cool the air and add nighttime drama to the fashion runway.

Qingdao Rock City is a mixed-use project consisting of retail, theater, shopping center, entertainment facility, residence and hotel space. With Laoshan Mountain canyon as its natural ecological blueprint, the project breaks thoroughly the “closed box” layout of the traditional shopping center by integrating rivers, canyons, sunlight, plants and other natural ecological elements into the shopping environment, aiming to make it the first domestic experiential waterscape theme shopping park.
Employing the design concept of the 8th generation American shopping center, Qingdao Rock City has large free public leisure space and a unique waterscape zone which embrace the sky and the sun.
The Concept of Environmental Setting “Memory” is the key point which makes landscape stay in people’s mind for a long time. Those green plants, sunlight, breeze, water and facilities make every minute spending here worthwhile and unforgettable, and attract people for next visit as well. Six landscape elements shaped the architecture, aiming to make it the first top experiential waterscape theme shopping park in China. With an area of about 1,500 square meters, the waterscape zone covers high fountain, water curtain (vertical drop of 18 meters to the ground), spring, and autosensing water curtain throughout the mall. Green space accounts for 20% of the total business area(excluding rooftop garden), and cherry, fruit trees, seasonal flowers can be seen throughout the plaza. Ecological landscape becomes the most obvious visual features in the mall. Public recreation area is divided into four major leisure venues, with the largest one for children activity space. The architect constructed the center stage in particular with a sun screen top throughout B1-L4. Wonderful performances are uninterrupted everyday and every month, different performing groups from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and other countries will be invited to give their shows. Center stage will provide opportunities for citizens who love life and want to sway their life passions.

Downtown Jebel Ali is a new development on the south side of Dubai, located along an 11-kilometer stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road. The project seeks to redefine the idea of urban design in Dubai; buildings and public space (streets, parks, plazas) have been designed to facilitate human interaction through the “new city.” Detailed design addressed fine-grained streets and parks to create identity for the district, with highly-programmed neighborhood parks, pedestrian-friendly streets with architectural canopies and kiosks, and a 16,187-square-meter plaza with water features, ficus bosques, roof gardens and cafés. SWA is providing full landscape architectural design services for parks and streetscape design. Zone 1 Block 2 is the first phase of the new high density, multi-use development.

Located within an 8 km long by 250-meter-wide development spine, Limitless added 6.97 square kilometers of development area at an estimated cost of 12 billion USD. The project consists of a central plaza, interactive water features, pedestrian cafés & gathering spaces, custom site furnishings, plaza elements, lighting, rooftop gardens and a streetscape design to connect the block to future development areas. The project is flanked by a mixed-use building designed by Pei Partnership on one side and a four-building commercial block by Burt Hill Architects on the other. Most of the central plaza area is over a below-grade parking structure which offered some additional site design challenges.

Trump Towers, a significant investment at the heart of business and urban life of Istanbul, is a unique project that connects with its surroundings as a natural part of the urban landscape. The design with its urban and the private use-oriented outdoors, the terraces and the courtyard, was based on a linear sequential setup defining the utilization of the gardens. Differences between vegetational and rigid material facilitated a 3-D perception. Horizontal mobility was obtained through coupling of patterns; vertically, through trees located on elevated topography, the linear walls and the covering materials. Seating, shaders, water elements brought diversity in the setup. The entrance square was planned as an urban area that attracts people, which is used for transition and service. The square became a meeting point with its catering platforms, its pool, its green wall, which filters out the noise and dirt of outside.

A garden was designed for the terraces at higher levels away from the city’s chaos. Several utilization possibilities are offered to the user. One of the terraces was designed as a transitional and recreational area with the highest botanic intensity, the other terrace garden was designed as an open space and sunbathing area. The inner gardens of Tower 1 and Tower 2 were created without irrigation necessities. A sustainable inner garden was formed. As planting material, imitations with striking colors were preferred and an abstract garden image was created. In lighting design, the linear impact is kept both on the floor and in the water. Instead of tall lighting elements, the light reflected from the trees and surfaces was used. It was aimed that the intertwining functional spaces, which were designed with a transition frequency; floor patterns, water elements, green components, and the lighting equipment to generate different perspectives, while sustaining a garden offering variety.

Located in Mendez Alvaro, the basic idea of the project is to build a business campus in the heart of the city of Madrid. The buildings occupy the perimeter which opens up space for a landscaped garden in the center of the plot.
On the upper levels of the building, terraces shaded by climbers provide intimate outdoor spaces and improve the microclimate during the heat of the Spanish summer.
The main aim was to create an atmosphere similar to a “cloister” of a monastery. The new headquarters will be composed of four buildings allocated around an interior courtyard that will be one of the key points of the project. Core of the open spaces is the 10,000 m² central courtyard shaded by mature native pine trees. It offers various opportunities to meet, relax or savour the coolness of the

All elements are designed corresponding with the structure of the building: large scale paving slabs, planting beds, water basin and the trees. Selection of plant species adapted to the climate, light reflecting materials, water management with cisterns and careful lighting help to meet the high standards of LEED® certification for sustainability.

The first construction phase, during which the administrative building 02 was built along with the adjacent garden space, was immediately followed by the next two phases during which other buildings were completed in years 2003 to 2006. In phase 2 administrative buildings 01, 03 and 05 were completed, and in phase 3 two more administrative buildings 06 and 07. Along with the completion of a series of administrative buildings artificial ponds and canals were built which, along with the gardens, connect the individual parts of the site into one whole. Further construction of administrative buildings led to the creation of a road running through the premises and closing up of a square with an underground parking lot marked as facility 04 thus creating a self-contained urban development. The central
square is made up of a lawn with a pond, a golf pitch and a kiosk with a wooden terrace covered by a textile roof designed as a leisure facility. Buildings 07 and 05 were in contrast to the original project joined with a bridge suspended on subtle pillars. The extension was built to satisfy the client’s wish for larger floor area and tested the viability of this urban concept. A number of auxiliary services were added to the premises during construction such as bank, gym, cafe, newsagents, general practice, kindergarten and others – contributing to diversification of the premises. The gradual construction of buildings and gardens fulfilled the urban architectonic mission of creating a humane working environment.

Sofia Airport Centre provides a working environment of international standards, surrounded by a green belt. It was designed to make use of the latest technologies, with a strong focus on the environment. To help create an attractive and inspiring space, terrain and landscape work has been envisioned which includes an artificial lake in the middle of the central square surrounded by a regular circle of office buildings.

The premises are located on a strategic spot for sales, logistics and other operations in a prestigious location ca. 5 km to the east of Sofia’s centre and only a few minutes to the north of the main route connecting Sofia to the second largest city in Bulgaria and the main international port of Varna. The Sofia Airport Centre project is being developed by Tishman and its joint-venture partner – GE Real Estate.

This state-of-the-art laboratory research building at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus houses specialized cardiovascular research groups and associated administrative and support functions, enclosing a one acre central courtyard. A key priority in the landscape design is to create a courtyard that fosters interaction amongst scientists. In the design process, ACLA met with researchers from both CVRB and the adjacent Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, striving to respond to the interests of both groups. The design draws on the qualities of the former salt marsh that once occupied the site in both character and function. Native grasses filter and absorb stormwater runoff, while buffering winds from the nearby bay. The bands of linear planting break down the plaza’s scale and define areas for group meetings, informal recreation, lounging and more intimate seating. A planted green roof adds habitat for native wildlife and helps filter stormwater. A long custom table and seats allows for a range of uses and accommodates groups of different sizes. A large specimen California Pepper tree at the northeast corner of the courtyard anchors the space. In addition to the courtyard, ACLA developed a new, bold entrance to the campus to welcome visitors from downtown and Mission Bay with an allée of palm trees, seating, and lights. A twenty-foot limestone pillar announces entry into the campus. The project was awarded LEED Gold certification in 2012. Landscape strategies included utilizing low water use planting, innovative irrigation systems, green roofs, and permeable paving in the plaza.

The complexity of the project includes landscape design used to connect architectural elements spread over the entire area, an actual green infrastructure, reducing impact and connecting the spaces.
The strong verticality of the architectural volumes echoes the vertical green elements and the containers, contributing to an overall sensation of anchoring nature to architecture.
The planting plan uses organic forms and broad curves that contrast effectively with the strong rhythm created by the vertical elements. Planting evokes a natural landscape, and the theme reoccurs in all the main areas: the plaza, the inner courtyard, the entrance area, the area just off the entrance area, the arena, the landscaped area facing Viale Aldo Moro, and the building perimeter.
A multi-stemmed Acer palmatum is the arena’s central focus drawing ones’ gaze from the circular forces created in the space. The large tree planted in the center of a walled space is surrounded by burnished steel panels patterned in square laser cutouts thinning out from bottom to top.
The green roof plaza sits on a rectangular structure disguised by planting while the building’s rectangular inner courtyard is also designed with space-defining sinuous lines and three dimensional effects: paths alternate with grass-covered dunes, their “soft” quality highlighted by species like Pennisetum spp. and Rosmarinus officinalis. The rhythm set up by the elements of vertical plant material also attracts the visitors gaze. In the formal entrance are situated four large Carpinus betulus “Pyramidalis” – in Corten steel bases – a filter between the access area and street traffic. Placemarking clipped balls of Buxus sempervirens in large terra-cotta vases are reflected in the building’s facade. 202
Crushed black marble gravel instead of paving highlights the planting scheme’s colors. In keeping with the context, the designers also specified the lighting; low lights pointing up, bordering the space and illuminating the garden’s botanical treasures. Posts and lights with wall washing LED bulbs were used to limit operating and maintenance costs. The landscaping facing Via Aldo Moro is planted with Hedera helix, Liriope muscari, Buxus sempervirens in clipped balls, and the lively Parrotia persica. Trees along Via Felicori include Carpinus betulus “Pyramidalis”, in Corten containers with thick beds of Hedera helix.

The landscape design for this LEED Gold candidate project provides a one acre parklike setting for both this cutting edge alternative energy research facility and also the community. The $130 million project adds a significant open space to downtown Berkeley and aligns with the city of Berkeley’s goals for downtown renewal. To navigate the eleven-foot elevation change between sidewalk and building, a system of sculpted pathways carves into the landscape, creating an entry sequence through drought-tolerant native meadow planting. Perforations in the Cor-ten zig zag wall glow gently in the evening, animating the southern slope. The twinkling lights represent the chemical structure of molecules used in the biofuel research occurring within the building. The undulating pattern fades in and out, suggesting

grasses in the wind. Many of the grasses used in the research are also on display as part of a demonstration garden in the upper terrace. The landscape design negotiates between the creation of a public place and the need for security with thoughtfully zoned areas for gathering. A glass wall screens the loading dock from the upper terrace, giving a sense of enclosure to this area just off the building entrance. A raised triangular planter further breaks down the scale of the space, creating more intimate areas for seating. The sunny sloping meadow lawn, canopy trees and related pathways invite lounging. The lower bicycle corridor and public plaza connect downtown Berkeley and the university campus.

Shaped to interpret the hull of a ship or the wing of an airplane, the iconic Port of Portland Headquarters hosts numerous visitors from around the world. The landscape incorporates a number of state-of-the-art design strategies for sustainable energy and water conservation, including two large green roofs and a Living Machine® that treats and recycles wastewater. The project earned a LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building’s distinctive foreground is an abstract, geometric landscape that represents the Port’s marine origins and connections to land. Waves of ornamental grasses recall the character of agricultural crops of as well as dunes of the nearby

coastal environment. In sharp contrast to the grasses, a tall illuminated wall flanks the main building entry featuring a bold laser-cut graphic. On Level 6, the building incorporates an outdoor terrace adjacent to the offices, providing space for parties, dining, and small conferences. Outside the offices on Level 10, a 930 sq. m. extensive eco-roof protects and insulates the building, and absorbs and filters rainwater. The eco-roof also provides a green foreground for the offices, given the spectacular views of the Columbia River, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood.

The Public Realm of the project has a calm and coherent identity. A uniform surface treatment comprised of a simple, unpatterned paving layout in high quality stone distinguishes the area from the surrounding hard landscape. Existing mature trees flanking Burlington Road provide a strong “Green” presence to the scheme, and eliminate the need for further planting. An area of contrasting stone between the two buildings forms a public plaza, in which customised stone benches are placed and appear floating. Simple in composition, this space occurs in direct dialogue with the sunken courtyard via a large specimen tree and a bespoke water body. The water is pumped through a network of fragmented stone, passes beneath a glass balustrade and falls as a waterfall to the courtyard below. In the Sunken Courtyard the landscape treatment focuses on the massing of 228
vegetation. Large Scot’s Pine puncture the structural slab to provide the necessary root-zone depths for the trees to reach a desirable height, auxiliary planting is then placed on tilted planes retained by cor-ten steel surrounds. The soaring nature of the chosen Pine and Bamboo species helps to accentuate the volume of the enclosure. Clumps of multi-stem birch trees with their distinctive white bark and low profile provide both pockets of relief – allowing light effects to break through – and a contrasting seasonal variation. An extensive water body, driven by the waterfall from the plaza above forms a unifying element within the courtyard. Clearings in the vegetation expose the waters edge to areas of hardwood decking, where moveable seating arrangements cater for both individual reflection and informal interaction.

The Frontier Project is a LEED Platinum-certified, non-profit demonstration building and garden designed to inspire, inform and instruct sustainable design to the community. Inspired by the indigenous eco-tones of the Cucamonga Valley Watershed, the landscape consists of visually engaging native and naturalized plantings, selected to reduce the need for irrigation and maintenance, as well as to provide habitat for local birds and insects. The landscape is designed to reveal natural processes, such as water flowing through the site and passive solar design techniques. These techniques along with extensive signage educate thousands of school children, community members and professional organization members about sustainable landscape design each year. Stormwater strategies include a rain garden for bio-filtration which overflows to a cistern and utilized for irrigation. A “Water(less) Garden” replaces the idea of a pool, and native groundcovers replace turf to

demonstrate water-conserving landscape strategies. The project was selected by the Landscape Architecture Foundation to be a Landscape Performance Case Study. The study revealed that each year this 21,000 square foot site educated nearly 5,000 visitors; eliminates over 500 pounds of CO2 emissions; treats and infiltrates 128,000 gallons of stormwater; conserves 10,000 gallons of potable water; and increases employee satisfaction, sense of community and ability to cope with work-related stress.

TOPOTEK 1 TOPOTEK 1 is a landscape architecture studio that specializes in the design and construction of unique urban open spaces. Founded by Martin Rein-Cano in 1996, the studio’s roster of German and international projects has ranged in scale from the master plan to the private garden. Each project strives to respond to site conditions and programmatic necessities with a compelling concept, high quality of design and efficient implementation. TOPOTEK 1 often collaborates with other creative consultants such as artists, lighting designers, and video programmers to enrich the experiential potential of a project. RAFAEL DE LA-HOZ CASTANYS Rafael de La-Hoz (Córdoba, Spain) studied architecture at ETSAM Madrid, and currently operates an active international architecture practice in different countries around the world. With a strong interest in the evolution of the architectural fabric of the city and the environmental impact and care, he has received some of the best certificates in sustainable design and some of the world highest honours including, MIPIM Award to the “Best office building in the world”, International Design Award from the Architecture Biennial of Argentina or the American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum (USA). Patron of the Contemporary Architecture Foundation and Editorial Board member of Serbian magazine The New ARCH, he has been invited as jury or to lecture in different places and universities as ETH Zurich, The College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, l’Ecole Nationale d’Architecture in Rabat or AEDES Gallery in Berlin.
Inside Outside studio profile Inside Outside, founded by lead-designer Petra Blaisse in 1991, is a multi-disciplinary team of artists, architects, landscape architects and designers. The studio is specialized in landscape design, exhibitions, curtains, wayfinding and interior interventions and works internationally, both on private and on public projects in a variety of scales. Although interior and landscape are seen as one and inter-disciplinary collaboration is tradition at Inside Outside, the interior and landscape teams each consist of experienced professionals in the field. Bernard Seymour Landscape Architects Bernard Seymour Landscape Architects was established 17 years ago in order to contribute a rigorous and creative approach to landscape design and planning. The practice has a diverse scope of landscape design and planning projects, which vary in scale and approach, encompassing Estate landscapes, significant Public Schemes, Environmentally-focused Schemes, Environmental Impact Studies, Urban Design projects and Commercial Work. Cigler Marani Architects Cigler Marani Architects a.s. (CMA) is an architectural studio, which started its activities in November 2001 in Prague, Czech Republic. It was founded by the Czech architect Jakub Cigler together with the American architect Vincent Marani. While Jakub Cigler has brought a creative experience of working in the domestic and international architectural scene to the company, Vincent Marani´s contribution consisted in the long-term experiences in the technical management of a number of projects in the contemporary American and European architecture. A subsidiary architecture company OOO CMA located in Moscow was established in November 2011 in response to the growing construction demand in the Russian Federation. OOO CMA has been currently preparing few large urban projects in the Moscow region, directly in the developing part of Moscow. One of those – Com City – is a project that includes administrative, exhibition and hotel complexes, shopping center, restaurants, fitness clubs, etc. for IT and telecommunications companies. CMA and OOO CMA placed itself among the type of companies engaging in progressive architecture. The studio has won several awards for its work, both at home and abroad (including the International Design Award, Building of the Year Award or Dušn JurkovičAward – the most important architectural prize given in Slovakia), and has been one of the founding members of the Association of the Czech Green Building Council. PARKKIM Kees Tolk PARKKIM is a Seoul-based design firm practicing landscape architecture and urban design, founded first in the Netherlands by Yoonjin Park and Jungyoon Kim in 2004 upon their winning Chichi Earthquake Memorial Competition in Taiwan. Yoonjin Park received Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Park worked at Sasaki Associates (MA, USA) and West8 (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and taught at Boston Architectural College (Boston USA) and Wageningen University (the Netherlands) before he founded PARKKIM with Jungyoon Kim in 2004. He was invited for several lectures by international institutions such as Shih-chien University, Ohio State University, Melbourne University and Harvard University and wrote Three Agencies of Trans-disciplinary Landscape Architecture (2005, Korean Journal of Landscape Architecture) and Gangnam Alternative Nature (2007, ed. William Lim). Jungyoon Kim received Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Kim was selected as the “Design Leader of Next Generation” awarded by the Korean Ministry of Commerce and KIDP in 2007. She worked at West8 (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) and taught at Wageningen University (the Netherlands). She was appointed as the Glimcher Distinguished Visiting Professor by Knowlton School of Architecture, Ohio State University(2011). Kim won Invited Design Competition for park system for Gwanggyo new city in 2008 and served as the design commissioner for Gwanggyo city. She was recently appointed to Public Architect of Seoul by Metropolitan Government of Seoul.

Kees Tolk started his office in 1980. The first important project was WTC in Amsterdam, a garden of 1 ha on a concrete deck. He worked for Floriade Holland, the City of Amsterdam and several collegue offices as a brainstormpartner in the conceptual phase. Projects as Floriade 1982 and 2002 ( Masterplan 50 ha), Kasteeltuinen Arcen (37 ha) and Mondo Verde. The project IJsseloord 2, a business park on a former junkyard, was nominated for an environmental award. Later he worked more and more for project developers as G & S Vastgoed, AM Vastgoed and Ballas Nedam and he specialised in roofgardens. For the roofgarden in Amsterdam nearby Arena, with the 3 towers (Oval Tower) he also designed all the furniture and lightning as for the project La Guardia Plaza ( 2 ha) a bench of 200 meters. Several roofgarden followed, working together with architects as Toyo Ito, Vignoli, SOM and UNStudio at the Zuidas in Amsterdam.

Born in 1941. Toyo Ito graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1965 and established his office in 1971. His main works include White U (1976), Silver Hut (1984), Yatsushiro Municipal Museum (1991), Sendai Mediatheque (2001), Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2002 in London (2002), Tama Art University Library (Hachioji campus) (2007), The Main Stadium for the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan R.O.C. (2009) and Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture, Imabari (2011). Many projects, including Minna-no-Mori Gifu Media Cosmos, Taichung Metropolitan Opera House, and the College of Social Sciences, Taiwan University in Taipei are under development/construction. He received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the 8th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennnale in 2002, the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 2006 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2013, etc.

Mayer/Reed is an 18-person Portland, Oregon-based design firm providing landscape architecture, urban design, visual communications and product design services for the environments in which we live, work and play. The firm’s work in creating places for human activity explores the social, cultural, ecological and historic contexts that shape these environments. Mayer/Reed worked closely with the building architects on the site design and building terrace landscapes for the Port of Portland Headquarters. The firm prepared the detailed design plans for all levels of gardens over structure and green roofs. The firm also developed the planting design for the Living Machine bio-treatment system inside the building lobby.
DS Architecture – Landscape Being a pioneer in its field for 15 years, DS is a design office that has both theoretical and practical products where architecture and landscape intersect. The main goal of the works is to create sustainable, practicable, well designed places with something to tell. DS designs have the “setting of a microcosmos” as the main motivation. The design group perceives the complex fabric of today’s multilayered, multicultural and interdisciplinary environment as a source and using this source, it sets up meaningful, clear, creative new places with the motto of combining high artistical skills with rational, economic and ethical values; both in national and international projects. Considering nature as another source, the group creates parametrical designs through a syntactical perception of nature by filtering it. DS provides design services ranging in scale from residential and urban projects, cooperating with distinguished architects, planners, engineers and especially ecologists.
EARTHSCAPE Landscape design studio, founded by Eiki Danzuka. Considering the devices that create connections between human and nature as design, they enact design works that become a platform for experience. With landscape design as their primary axis, EARTHSCAPE is involved in a wide array of activities, including the MHCP, that seek to contribute to society through design.
