A WORD FROM PAUL BARTON >
PAUL BARTON HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends,
While Winston Churchill was working to form the United Nations after World War II, he famously said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” Churchill’s insight into human nature can be applied to the global pandemic and the social unrest we are facing today. Instead of lamenting on all that we have lost because of these crises, I think it’s important to highlight some of the creative and meaningful good that is coming from these unprecedented times. Over the past six months, many of our families have expressed to me the silver lining of the coronavirus. Many New Year’s resolutions revolve around spending more time with family or simplifying the pace of our crazy lives or scaling back everything from birthday parties to vacations. All of us have rediscovered the importance of more family time and the joy of simple pleasures – from board games to home-cooked meals. The emphasis on nurturing relationships and the deeper realization that our choices can positively or negatively impact the health and well-being of our family, friends and neighbors are incredible “goods” that have emerged from this crisis. Will some

of these positive rediscoveries and noble realizations last?
The social and racial unrest experienced by our country has also impacted school communities, including Holy Innocents’. One of the goods that is emerging from this crisis is the importance of truly listening to one another with open minds and open hearts. Creating safe spaces for open dialogue and promoting the practice of civil discourse are the cornerstones of an Episcopal education and the bedrock of our democracy. To ensure that this critical “good” is progressing at HIES, our board of trustees created the One HI Task Force. This committee, made up of trustees, parents, faculty and staff, and alumni, will oversee our efforts to more fully live into what Martin Luther King, Jr. called “the beloved community.”
“Zoom” has gone from being a 1970s educational television program (remade in the late ’90s) to the means by which life and work can carry on during a global pandemic. We have all become adept at muting and unmuting ourselves and others as well as appearing properly dressed from the waist up. Zoom has also allowed us to connect and perform in creative and
powerful ways. We see this in the way our teachers conduct classes, tutor students and even hold parent-teacher conferences. Our fine arts department has stretched the creative boundaries of the virtual world by Zooming in celebrity artists to teach and inspire our young artists. Tune into our Fine Arts YouTube channel (HIES Fine Arts) to watch weekly recordings of our performing ensembles from all divisions. Our Development Office sponsored a virtual wine tasting event hosted by an alumnus who works at a winery in Oregon. Our faculty stayed connected during the long quarantine and had a blast with a virtual trivia night. Meetings are conducted, loved ones stay connected and orchestras perform. Let’s make sure we make the most of the opportunities for change and appreciate the real and lasting good that is often born out of crises. Golden Bears call it making honey out of honeycomb. Go Bears!
THREE HIES FACULTY/STAFF MEMBERS PUBLISH BOOKS IN 2020 >>>
FACULTY AUTHORS >
good reads The Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School community is proud to announce that three faculty members have published books this year. Director of Enrollment Management Beth-Sarah Wright has completed her latest title, “DIGNITY: Seven Strategies for Creating Authentic Community.” This is her fifth book. Wright has written about developing the courage for transformation and change, in our communities, our institutions and in our lives in authentic ways.
Her latest book, as well as the other four, provide inspiration not only in the work force, but in regard to life in general.
Coach Dunn Neugebauer has released his third book, “Wits, Wisdoms, and Wonders for Navigating This Thing Called Life.” Written in a “Life’s Little Instruction Book” style, it was inspired by writing notes to graduating seniors regarding life advice before ‘taking on the world.’ His previous books “Funny Conversations with God – an Uncalled Dialogue” and “Rock Bottom Then Up Again” were also both big hits in the community and at large.
Upper School English Department Chair Christopher Swann launched his second novel, “Never Turn Back,” on Oct. 6. Two years ago, “Shadow of the Lions” was released to local and national acclaim. Dr. Swann was nominated for several Georgia awards and both his works can be found in bookstores. His latest title is also a mystery and, like the first one, will leave the reader in suspense until the final chapters.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

GREENBAUM GRANT RECIPIENT >>> PATRICK PILKEY EXPLORES THE STORY OF JULIETTE, GA
by Christina Mimms,
MANAGING EDITOR
As a recipient of a 2020 Greenbaum Grant, Upper School visual arts teacher Patrick Pilkey spent this past summer working on his project and has created a unique photojournalistic display of his work. Venturing to Juliette, Ga., a town of about 3,000 residents near Macon in Monroe County, Mr. Pilkey’s primary goal was to document the effects of the Robert W. Sherer Power Plant on the town and its residents. The Sherer plant, which covers 12,000 acres, is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide in the United States, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents in Juliette have documented illnesses that are linked to the plant’s effects, and water sources in the area have been found to contain unsafe levels of toxic chemicals – such as hexavalent chromium and arsenic – seeping from the plant’s coal-burning operations. Mr. Pilkey made multiple trips to Juliette, sometimes camping overnight in his truck to capture early morning or evening light. He took an “old-school” approach, shooting with a Mamiya 7 camera and Kodak Portra film. “I wanted to keep it more natural and challenge myself somewhat,” Mr. Pilkey said. “Shooting with film keeps you in the moment because you can’t check your screen while shooting.”
6
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE
The situation with the water contamination in Juliette is similar to the story of “Erin Brokovich,” a 2000 movie about the town of Hinkley, Calif., where residents also dealt with hex chromium contamination in their water from Pacific Gas & Electric’s power plant. In Juliette, Georgia Power has purchased the homes and land of many residents, allowing them to relocate out of town but that is not an easy solution for all, Mr. Pilkey learned. Some homes, which use well water, have belonged to families for several generations. Other residents work for the power plant and relocating would result in job loss. Those who have stayed have relied on purchasing bottled drinking water. Residents who accepted a buyout from Georgia Power also signed non-disclosure agreements and declined Mr. Pilkey’s requests for photographs or interviews. Some residents – some characters among them – spoke openly about the situation. He met a 15-year-old who recently had surgery for cancer in his breast tissue. One of the church’s preachers lost his mother to cancer; his daughter is an environmental activist in the area. Mr. Pilkey took photographs of children and families swimming in Lake Juliette, homes in the area, items left behind by residents who have vacated, the power plant and other scenery in and around town. “I felt very lucky to photograph something like this,” Mr. Pilkey said. “It was a wonderful experience and a really good lesson. My hope is to make work that highlights the issue.” Mr. Pilkey is crafting a photographic display that will be on campus later this year. Endowed by the Greenbaum Family, the Greenbaum Grants are designed to promote teaching excellence by providing teachers with resources to undertake special enrichment activities beyond what might otherwise be covered by the school’s professional development budget. Grant applications are reviewed and awards are approved by a committee consisting of the director of institutional advancement, the associate head of school and the recipients of the award from the previous school year. Middle School Spanish teacher Eliza Suarez ’99 also received a 2020 grant. Her plans to travel and study in Mexico were postponed due to COVID-19.

national merit semi-finalists Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School is proud to announce that seniors Lane Estes and Robert McDonald have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists this year. More than 1.5 million high school juniors in 21,000 high schools enter the program each year, and they will now compete among 16,000 students to become National Merit Finalists and receive one of 7,600 scholarships totaling $30 million. Both students have outstanding academic records and are involved with a variety of activities. In the 2019-2020 school year, Lane received the academic award for AP Calculus B/C. He is copresident of Model UN, president of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and a member of the Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society,
Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society and the Honor Council. He volunteers at the Atlanta History Center and works at Mathnasium as a math tutor. He is a peer tutor at HIES and his favorite subject is history. Lane is applying to several colleges, including University of North Carolina, Columbia University and University of Georgia. An Alpha-Omega student, Robert is a team leader for varsity wrestling and runs varsity track. He is a member of the Round Square leadership team and traveled to Bolivia in summer 2019. He is president of the Coding Club, a leader in Science National Honor Society and a member of National Honor Society; he also serves as a Golden Bear Guide for admissions. He works at Chick-fil-A on Roswell Road. His favorite class to

date is Data Structures. He is applying to Georgia Tech, University of North Carolina and Harvard University. Lane and Robert join Robert McDonald a nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, that includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Semifinalists are selected based on their academic record, school and community activities, leadership, employment and honors and awards.
Karen Greer IN MEMORIAM Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Karen Greer, former teacher and HIES parent, on August 31, 2020. She served the school as a fifth-grade assistant, a Middle School history teacher and the first seventh-grade dean when the dean program was launched. Her children Patrick Greer ’96 and Brooke Greer Zimmerman ’04 both were Alpha-Omega HIES graduates. She is survived by her children and husband of 49 years, the Rev. Ron Greer. A private family funeral was held.

WISHING THE BEST TO RETIRING FACULTY by Dunn Neugebauer,
TIM McCLAIN Twelve years ago, then-Middle School Principal Theresa Jespersen took a chance on an untrained and untested ex-exec to fill a last-minute vacancy. Tim McClain not only went on to make Mrs. Jespersen and the History department look good, but added 10 years of coaching a state champion cross country program to his resume as well. Mr. McClain’s first year in 2008 saw him teach three U.S. History classes, one World Geography class and a girls’ English class. “I was learning right beside my students, which turned out to be a bonding experience,” he said. “Whenever administration would drop in to assess my progress, the class would prop me up by pretending to be fascinated with whatever it was I was babbling about. We got a kick out of that, especially since one of the conspirators was Mrs. Jespersen’s son, Andy.” Needless to say, Mr. McClain passed the audition before eventually narrowing his focus to U.S. and World History in addition to his cross-country duties. History remains one of his passions, and he reports with a smile that “every one of my students loved history. Not all of them knew it at the beginning of school, but I made it my business to convince them. Perhaps it wasn’t the history of Martin Van Buren’s relationship with the National Bank, but the history of baseball, rock and roll, fashion or science has a fascinating history, too. And once you pull on any thread of history, lots of other stuff comes with it and becomes interesting.” Out on the running courses, Mr. McClain spent years as an assistant before taking over the head job for Gary Klingman four years ago. “I was lucky enough to be a part of 10 consecutive state cross country championships at HIES, coaching and running with the team (or, to be more precise, behind most of them). Three things I’d like them to remember – first, we won as a team and the trophies we hoisted in October were a result of training in the heat and humidity in August. Second, we committed to each other, ran for each other and celebrated each other. It was family. And third, always run facing traffic.” Looking back over the years, Mr. McClain can’t help but remember his initial feeling when standing before a group of Middle School students back in 2008. “I thought to myself – this will either kill me fast or end up being one of the greatest adventures of my life. I’m happy to say it turned out to be the latter."

JANET SILVERA When you think of Middle School science, it’s hard not to think of Janet Silvera – who has retired after 40 years of excellent service at Holy Innocents’. Ms. Silvera leaves a legacy that includes memories of smiles. When the yearbook was dedicated to her in 2007, it brought to light her “wacky science experiments, her healthy dose of enthusiasm and spontaneous group hugs that qualified – and continue to qualify her – as one of HI’s all-around favorite teachers.” Her passion for science and her curiosity about nature were evident from childhood. One of her early classroom memories were pictures showing the metamorphosis of a frog, which inspired her to do experiments with her microscope and chemistry sets at home. Besides following the bouncing ball in the science world, she also played the piano and now gardens and grows orchids as her hobbies. Spending most of her early years in Jamaica, she and her husband, Max, moved to New York in the mid-1970s. There, she taught at The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine. One of her advisory students was none other than Ben Stiller. “This made for some interesting parent-teacher conferences with his famous parents,” she said. At HIES, Ms. Silvera taught sixth through eighth grade science. She served as the sixth grade team leader – before we had deans – and as Science Department Chair from 2007 to 2010. In addition to her classroom success and warm personality, her leadership also came through in the Science Olympiad program which she took over in 2003. The squad made it to the state competition every year. In 2011, with the help and dedication of all the science teachers, Max Silvera and many parents, the team advanced to the national competition in Michigan. Her children Stephanie and Gordon went to HI; Gordon graduated from HIES in 2004 as an Alpha-Omega and star soccer player who went on to play in the collegiate ranks. Janet has been described as “a chemist, zoologist, teacher, mother, wife and friend who works hard each day to enrich the lives of others and inspire us all to go far in life.” Her approachable style was always a hit, not only in the classroom, but in the hallways and around campus, and her contribution to Holy Innocents’ has been immeasurable.

The Our Time Campaign, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s ambitious $32.5 million effort, continues to hit benchmarks despite the unique nature of this school year. Launched in January 2020 with roughly $21 million raised, confidence in a tidy conclusion by school yearend was high. The climate for fundraising and construction quickly changed in early March due to COVID-19, when HIES implemented a campus shutdown, virtual learning and entered a completely new chapter in the school’s life. In May, the Board of Trustees voted to continue moving forward with the campaign, acknowledging that the needs of students and community would not change and that the benefit offered by the new buildings was still of great importance. With that decision, the campus transformation began and demolition and renovation of existing buildings was under way. The last several months have brought renewed energy to the Campaign. In June, HIES was notified of a $200,000 award from the SunTrust Trusteed Foundations, the largest ever made by this Foundation to an independent school. Since school resumed in August, the Campaign has continued to see tremendous support from both the school community and Atlanta philanthropic community. Early November brought another significant investment when the Our Time Campaign was awarded $2 million from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation and cemented its path forward. HIES is grateful beyond measure for the belief and commitment of its generous donors. To date, $24.8 million has been raised and the momentum of this incoming support cannot be overstated. Buoyed by the school’s first-ever Giving Day on Oct. 28, which raised $148,550 toward Our Time, and delighted by the new Humanities Building rising in the center of
campus, students, faculty and staff are energized and optimistic. Fortunately, due to prudent investment and forwardthinking leadership, the project remains on schedule with the Upper School Humanities building welcoming its first students in the fall of 2021. This will mark a new era of learning, exploration and innovation at Holy Innocents’.
OUR TIME CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE >
Our Time Capital Campaign Moves Forward and New Humanities Building Rises
The next step in the campus transformation will bring a new Lower School and a central quad as the crowning touches on this phase of the Campus Master Plan. The Lower School is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022 and will offer new learning opportunities nurtured by design conducive to curiosity and collaboration. With more than $7.5 million to raise, it will take the continued dedication of the HIES community to realize goals within our reach. It is only with the help of parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends that we can celebrate the unprecedented success of the campaign signaled by the largest gifts and highest totals ever raised in the school’s history. Please visit www.ourtimecampaign.com for detailed information and to make your commitment today. HIES’s Development Team welcomes your questions! THE HUMANITIES: PEDAGOGY WITH PURPOSE >
The Humanities: Pedagogy with Purpose by Christina Mimms,
H
umanities classes at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School serve as the setting for some of the great lessons in education: exploring the stories of tragic heroes in great works of literature, debating issues of ethics and behaviors, questioning and affirming one’s belief systems, delving into not just world languages but world cultures, and learning to discuss and pen all with clarity and purpose. Conversations that take place in these classes may well remain in students’ minds for the rest of their lives where they will draw from those lessons time and again. With the current issues of a global pandemic as well as social change stemming from the Black Lives Matter movement, there is much to discuss. Teachers and students are conversing about issues with a worldwide impact while also experiencing them. It is a meaningful place to pause, and HIES provides the solid and safe place for those discussions, guided by highly qualified teachers who lead students on a fruitful path where opinions may collide, but without running off course and away from purpose.

ENGLISH In his 24 years teaching English at HIES, Chris Swann, Ph.D., is one who has observed and implemented changes, but also borne witness to things that have remained the same. “Reading and writing are crucial skills for college but also for life,” he said. “I’ve had students tell me they felt really prepared for writing in college, which gives them a leg up.” In the English department, students are grouped by grade level. That configuration allows discussions to take place among direct peers. With that, Dr. Swann and other faculty regularly review their reading lists, and for AP classes, they look at reading recommendations from the AP College Board. “We’re always looking for newer titles that speak to kids today,” he said. “It’s easy to get locked into teaching this grade and this book, but we ask, ‘Why?’. We look at how books apply in the real world because we want to send off students equipped to deal with some of the uglier things as well as the good things. Literary texts can often reinforce or challenge

dominant ideologies. English class is a great, safe place to encounter material and discuss it.”
and economic issues. “We have a fragile economy – more than we realized – and we took democracy for granted,” Dr. Koontz said. “The amazing thing is that this woke people up to be informed and to participate. It’s all happened so quickly.”
For example, reflecting on Black Lives Matter, which garnered more attention than ever in summer 2020, teachers changed the ninth-grade summer reading book to “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, which tells about the police shooting of Oscar Grant, a young Black man in Oakland, Calif. AP English Literature classes read and discussed “An American Marriage,” a story about a biracial marriage by Tayari -Erik Vincent Jones.
THERE ARE SOME AMAZING LESSONS ABOUT RESLIENCY, COURAGE AND TENACITY.
“Black Lives Matter has pushed us to examine the diversity of what we teach,” Dr. Swann said. “Issues have come up and there have been good discussions.” Classes have not discussed the pandemic more than anecdotally because “no one’s writing the COVID novel right now,” Dr. Swann said. In a few years, material may exist that is worth considering.
HISTORY That is also the case for History classes. With the pandemic still in the present, not as many resources abound for classwork. However, in a new elective called History of Medicine, students have studied the history of disease. “We have a confluence of three historical events happening at the same time – the pandemic, Black Lives Matter and the election,” Laurel Koontz, Ph.D. history chair, said. “It’s the perfect storm.” Many issues have come to light and served as fodder for rich discussions. In U.S. History, for example, students have taken a closer look at democracy, rights, protests, health insurance, testing, vaccines, healthcare failures
14
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE
Current events opened the door for some of the new elective classes to respond. For example, in History of Rock n Roll, students have learned about the role of protest songs. Dr. Koontz is considering adding a Social Justice elective that would allow for a deeper dive into Black Lives Matter.
RELIGION While religion is, and always has been, an integral part of the humanities curriculum, in Upper School, students move beyond the key players in the Bible and dive into serious issues, including taking a look at religions around the world – those that differ from Christianity and some whose tenets are difficult to understand. In the spring 2020 semester, COVID-19 raised a lot of questions among students, and religion classes proved to be a safe place for students to feel emotional support. “As a department we saw our role as caretakers and that felt more important than getting through some content,” Mary Bingham, religion department chair, said. “This semester we’re still taking time to check in with everyone and see how they are feeling. We want to make sure everyone feels supported and valued.” The tenets behind the Black Lives Matter movement – inclusivity, dignity, equality – connect with Episcopal ideals as well as Christianity, creating content for important discussions in World Religions and other
THE HUMANITIES: PEDAGOGY WITH PURPOSE >
classes. For example, in Mrs. Bingham’s senior elective “Ethical Responses to the Nazi Regime,” students have drawn parallels between Nazism and treatment of Black citizens and minority groups.
WORLD LANGUAGES World Language classes study not only the language but also the culture of other countries. As students quarantined last spring they were naturally curious about how others were affected by the global pandemic. James Terry, Ph.D., world languages department chair, researched articles about Paris in lockdown. Students were shocked to learn that residents had to have documentation to leave their homes and were permitted limited time outside. The vast metro system closed completely. Using current events as lessons has proven to be an effective technique for students to learn with understanding – and even empathy – about their subject matter. “We try to teach language using topics that compel students,” Dr. Terry said. Storytelling is another effective method that aids with proficiency as well as the expectation for students to speak the language at least 70 percent of class time. One student starts telling a story and then hands off to another student to add to the story which travels
around the room and to the remote learners on iPads. Storytelling allows every student to participate and gives them an opportunity to be creative as well. From primary grades onward, HIES world language teachers generally avoid grammarbased instruction and focus on vocabulary, comprehension and proficiency, including pronunciation. Students are assessed on their ability to speak the language. Because maskwearing has slightly prohibited their ability to project, assignments often require students to record videos of themselves at home in which they respond to a series of questions from their teachers.
GLOBAL STUDIES The year 2020 may impact Global Studies more than any of the humanities classes. International trips were canceled, begging the question of how to create global experiences for students and how to connect with exchange partners in Ghana and France as well as Asahigaoka High School, HIES’ sister school in Sapporo, Japan. Those relationships have been nurtured for many years and preserving them is a priority even as new opportunities are considered. “With so much in flux, this is a good time to pause and reflect on our global initiatives,” Erik Vincent, humanities and global studies curriculum director, said.

When Isabelle Smith ’17 entered Holy Innocents’ Upper School, she knew the Global Studies program would fit her perfectly. Her family always enjoyed international travel and the opportunities offered by HIES allowed her to expand her education well beyond the campus.
“Global was really formational for me in my HIES experience,” she said. “The capstone project was an opportunity to connect with the Atlanta community in a new way.” It also inspired her to look for experiences outside of Atlanta. In the summer after her sophomore year, Isabelle traveled to Guadalupe with Broadreach, a national organization that coordinates trips for middle and high school students. Isabelle learned about Creole culture and practiced French on her adventure.
In the summer after her junior year, she participated in Middlebury College’s four-week language immersion program for intense French studies. Friends she made there were involved with the Global Studies programs at their respective schools as well, giving them much to discuss outside of class. When the time came to select a college, Isabelle needed a school that allowed international travel opportunities but she also wanted one with small classes and a strong liberal arts program. Colorado College fit the bill. Isabelle is majoring in political science with a French minor and enjoys skiing as time permits.
She spent the majority of her junior year in France studying at the political science institute where she attended classes with students from France as well as South America. She traveled throughout France until her time was cut short by COVID-19 quarantine. Isabelle returned home in March and completed her classes online. Currently Isabelle is back at Colorado College and in the process of applying for a Fulbright scholarship. Her proposal is focusing on research in Senegal and the role of female representatives in political systems. After college, she is considering working in nonprofits but serving her community remains a priority — a lesson learned at HIES.
“As you start to form your own thoughts and beliefs in high school, Global created the environment and tools to engage in conversations in a productive way,” Isabelle said. “Students learn to respect each other and how to be effective global citizens. It gave me a confidence I wouldn’t have had and it was an amazing experience for me.” 16
TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE - Christina Mimms
New in his role for the 2020-2021 school year, Mr. Vincent is allotting time to meet with his faculty to brainstorm ideas, including ways to leverage technology to create virtual exchange opportunities for students in the middle and lower grades even as he works with PK3-12 humanities faculty to align curricula vertically and with larger global competencies. “This is a critical time to be teaching humanities with a pandemic, Black Lives Matter, economic uncertainty and the election,” Mr. Vincent said. “The situation presented to us as educators is significant. These are globally shared experiences but lived out differently in different parts of the world. The ‘world as classroom’ has taken on new meaning for us.” With that, faculty are seeking ways to interact virtually with the Round Square schools with online learning programs and conversations. Virtual programs will allow Middle School students, who have not traveled as much as Upper School students in the past, to start building relationships with international peers. “There is so much more that we can do besides hosting trips and sending students on trips,” Mr. Vincent said. Opportunities for dialogues and debates exist for students, who can compare and contrast their pandemic experiences with students in other countries. Dialogue is a key component of Round Square programs; 2020 is a great year to start building that skill. “Overall, there are some amazing lessons our students can teach us about resiliency, courage and tenacity during these extraordinary times,” Mr. Vincent said. And while humanities classes at HIES are comprised of rich literature, impactful religious tenets, vast historical knowledge, foreign language proficiency and cultural competency, a HIES education would not be complete, particularly in 2020, without lessons in the very qualities of humanity such as empathy, dignity, faith. These classes embody the school mission statement to develop “a love of learning, respect for self and others, faith in God, and a sense of service to the world community.”
New Upper School Humanities Building Will Enhance Curricula Design features of the new Upper School Humanities building will provide not only more physical space for students but a better arrangement for the robust conversations happening in the classes. In the new classrooms, Dr. Chris Swann believes his faculty will be better equipped to teach an already outstanding program with more physical space, modern design and equipment, and flexibility. For example, many Upper School desks purchased years ago were not designed for laptop computers that today’s students use constantly. The tight quarters allow only one classroom arrangement, while the new classrooms will have ample space so that desks and tables can be moved into one configuration for discussions or group work and into a different configuration for a test. Collaborating among colleagues ranks top on the goals for the humanities curriculum. Where topics overlap, the reasoning for putting two classes together or assigning a joint project between history and English not only provides students with an opportunity to collaborate but also deepens their thinking. Dr. Laurel Koontz hopes to integrate more group work with English and religion classes. To date, combining classes and collaborative work have been challenged by a lack of space in both the Riley and Groesbeck buildings. Students end up sitting on the floor in classrooms or in the hallways without proper surfaces for laptops, books or notes. HIES’ new humanities building will hold intentionally designed spaces that will be able to accommodate large groups of students in meeting spaces as well as small groups that can work in nooks that will be tucked into different areas of the building. Mary Bingham is very excited to get a Harkness table in her religion classroom, where students will be seated around an oval table which has been proven in research to encourage open conversations. A teacher serves as a guide but students are on equal footing and can freely participate in discussions. In the 2019-2020 academic year James Terry, Ph.D., world languages department chair, was able to conduct some of his classes outside, which he found beneficial for his students. The new building incorporates a great deal of natural light, which mimics the feeling of being outside, thus reducing stress and allowing students to learn in a more comfortable state. “I’m excited about the openness of the classrooms,” he said.
THE NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HUMANITIES BUILDING IS SET TO OPEN FALL OF 2021.
Spanish teacher Patrick Allegra looks forward to the enhancements that will be included in the new building. “It will be great to have communal spaces and flexible teaching options,” he said. “We will also be able to be more intentional about how we interact with the Global curriculum, for example.” Space to move, to create, to collaborate and to realize potential all will benefit the humanities program. The new structure also will house college counseling offices and the campus shop. TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | FALL 2020

STRATEGIES PROGRAM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS by Christina Mimms,
MANAGING EDITOR
When the Middle School Learning Resource Department launched the Strategies Program at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School in 2000, teachers focused on a single goal – to help students who struggled in academics. Students with learning differences or undiagnosed students needed help, and teachers answered that call. The program soon gained more and more structure and continued to grow as students’ needs increased at all grades. Local families sought solutions and applied their children to HIES specifically because of Strategies. And now, 20 years later, the Learning Resource program and 12 teachers serve about one-third of all HIES students, from PK4 to 12th grade with teachers in every division. The program supports students with documented learning differences, and aids them with working on skills in context, executive functioning and self-advocacy as 18
well as their own growth mindset and metacognition (how they learn). “Learning differences are identified much earlier and everyone is much more aware these days,” Jeanine Englert, Middle School English Strategies teacher, said. “Parents know that their child can come here and be provided with the supports they need to be successful.” Starting in Primary School, students are evaluated in-house three times a year to determine if they are experiencing any issues with cognitive skills, motor skills, socialemotional behavior or language skills. Their results are compared with their previous evaluations. “I’m usually the first person to expose a weakness or challenge,” Allison Jabaley, Primary School learning support coordinator, said. Students may present an issue that requires occupational therapy, which often can be addressed on campus with an external specialist, for example. Other students may need further evaluation to determine if they need a specialized school for dyslexia or other language-based learning differences. Students are required to complete a psychological educational evaluation to be eligible for the Strategies program, which is delivered through either a structured class or monitoring in Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. First and second grade students are closely monitored by teachers. Kristin Holland, Lower School language arts teacher, works with emerging readers while Stephanie Hieber supports students in math. Teachers found that holding a Strategies class for first- and secondgrade students was premature. In third through fifth grades, students attend a Strategies class three times per week in place of a World Language class. “The research shows
that students with languagebased learning differences typically struggle in World Language classes during the elementary years; thus their time is better spent previewing and reviewing skills across the curriculum in Strategies,” Allison Payne, Lower School learning specialist, said. They also spend a good amount of time on executive functioning and self-advocacy skills. “A third grader might be mortified to ask a question but that is expected of students in Middle School,” Mrs. Payne said. And it’s not always easy to depart from one’s regular class schedule to go into Strategies but the successes that students gain from the program encourage them and their parents to be part of it. “We have managed to foster an environment that eliminates any stigma. Kids see it as a fun place to be,” Mrs. Payne said. When they progress to Middle School, some students attend a non-graded Strategies class that meets four times per week in place of World Languages for students with language-based learning differences. Teachers organize a specific class structure and plan for each day. Other students who do not need the level of support that Strategies offers enter a “monitored status” whereby the Strategies teachers oversee their progress and check in with them as needed. In Middle School, eighth-grade students enjoy the opportunity to be “Building Bears” and work with students in the Primary School on occasional projects. “They get to take ownership and it’s a great leadership opportunity, too,” Kori Hartung, Middle School teacher, said. In February 2020, eighth-graders visited with PK4 students to make valentines for facilities staff at the school. Moving to Upper School, students are wellequipped with skills to manage their workload but the rigor of the Upper School curriculum is different from Middle. Students with learning differences may continue to participate in a Strategies class from ninth through twelfth TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | FALL 2020

S t r at e g i e s > > > Co n t i n u i n g D u r i n g Q ua r a n t i n e When the HIES campus closed in March 2020 for COVID-related quarantine, teachers quickly – literally overnight – adapted their classrooms into virtual platforms. For many of them, they morphed into online instructors while also caring for and supporting their own children suddenly quarantined and learning remotely at home. For Strategies teachers working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, the virtual environment proved challenging. In Lower School, teachers Allison Payne and Stephanie Hieber scheduled individual Zoom calls with their third- through fifth-grade students. Sometimes the calls took place in the evenings due to availability issues. After a couple of weeks, the teachers moved to a regular schedule of holding Strategies classes two to three times per week and made themselves available during set “office hours.” “We all felt overwhelmed,” Mrs. Payne said. “Later on we got very comfortable with what we were doing. When students needed extra help they would pop in. But sometimes some students would need to miss the occasional class to take a mental break. There was some Zoom fatigue.” Some students struggled with being on screen all day whereas others thrived as they were able to work without any distractions. “As a teacher, I loved having more one-onone time with my students,” Mrs. Payne said. “We made new connections, like seeing their pets and getting to know them outside of the classroom. Their parents were fantastic.” Now back on campus, with COVID protocols in place, teachers again must

tap into creative skills to accomplish their classroom goals. Lower School Strategies classes often incorporate small manipulative objects but those can’t be shared by students and must be cleaned in-between uses. Mask-wearing has created an obstacle between teachers and students, who sometimes rely on seeing a teacher’s mouth enunciate words and give instructions. Masks have somewhat inhibited students who are naturally softspoken or introverted. And teachers have worked hard to ensure that remote learners who tune into their classes via Zoom participate equally. Mrs. Payne has sent home some of the handheld items used in class so that remote learners utilize the same materials. Middle School experienced similar issues early into the quarantine phase and Strategies teachers saw their number of students grow as many needed additional assistance with organizing their weekly schedules, their workload and even some emotional issues. Teachers frequently called on counselor Nicole Hopkins for support. Middle School teacher Kori Hartung fortified her relationships with many students’ parents as communications between them increased with students confined at home. “Parents really saw the strengths and challenges of their children,” Ms. Hartung said. “Our partnership grew even more and we got a lot of gratitude from parents.” So far this semester, the greatest challenge came in the form of learners at home as a number of Middle School students have been quarantined at different times due to possible COVID exposure. Middle School teacher Gail McNicholas, who naturally moves about the classroom quite often while she is teaching, has to
remember to stay inside of the screen area so that her remote students can see her. She has discovered a bonus of the at-home learners on the classroom iPads: “The technology has been much better and our microphones work well. I can pick up the tripod with the iPad and take it with me for one-on-one time,” she said. “We might put it on wheels!” In Upper School, Strategies teachers’ best methodology during quarantine was to keep office hours during the school day. They were available for one-on-one scheduled meetings or quick check-ins or both. Sarah Townsend, Upper School Learning Resource department chair, reached out to students if she did not hear from them. “I knew some of them were down and they were lonely,” she said. “They had Zoom burnout and some really struggled without bells and reminders from teachers and fellow students. I am so thankful for our teachers Miranda Forman, Stephanie Reiss and Sara Kotowski. They are 150 percent committed.” This school year, the Upper School Strategies Department is enjoying new, temporary classrooms in the Riley building in the former Malcolm Library space. Strategies will gain a new home in the humanities building currently under construction. The new arrangements have provided effective, very workable spaces for students this semester, the majority of whom have returned to on-campus learning. If students need to quarantine short-term, teachers are prepared to set up individual Zoom sessions with students to accommodate their needs and schedules and support them however they might need.
“Sometimes students need a cheerleading section,” Mrs. Townsend said. “We celebrate their successes but talk them through their losses and help them with a growth mindset. Our school really values the needs of our students. It’s very rewarding to see the kids be successful.” “They get a feeling of self in Middle School and they’re so excited to go to Upper School,” Mrs. Englert said. “Upper School students come back to visit and share their successes with us and parents will share their appreciation. We’re excited to see the program continue to grow.” Nick Carvalho ’13 participated in the Strategies program in tenth and eleventh grades. He employed the skills he learned at HIES in college, where he earned a B.S. degree in sports management at Florida State University and still uses the skills today with his work as an account manager with 160over90, an Atlanta-based sports management company. Nick just recently entered the MBA program at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business at the Buckhead campus, adding to his busy schedule.
“Strategies was always super helpful for me, especially with study skills, test prep and time management,” Nick said. “It helped me to become more organized and detail-oriented with making priority to-do lists and finishing one task at a time. I don’t know what I would have done without that class. Mrs. Townsend really helped me find the strategy that worked best for me.”
MEETING ALL NEEDS: STRATEGIES PROGRAM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS >
grades. They may also seek support from the Upper School Strategies team as needed. Sarah Townsend, Upper School Learning Resource department chair, and her teachers counsel students about their schedules, the classes they select and any struggles they may encounter.
As a member of the baseball, basketball and golf teams at HIES, Nick often found that he needed help with managing his schedule and the many hours required of him for sports practice as well as studying, especially leading up to tests. Strategies provided the tools that he carried into college, where he lived and worked with much more independence. “The first semester of college was an adjustment period but Mrs. Townsend prepared me really well,” Nick said. “I was able to apply what I learned at HIES to college classes. Strategies helped me not stress so much.” Students sometimes experience pressure – they want to grasp new material, score well on tests, earn accolades and feel a sense of accomplishment. For students with learning differences or struggles, the Strategies program helps to alleviate the pressure, meet the students’ needs and arm them with the tools to achieve their goals and realize their dreams.

The Annual Pumpkin Bash continues to be a successful event for alumni, faculty and their families to celebrate fall and Halloween. The event looked a bit different this year due to COVID-19. On Oct. 24, HIES transformed the parking area under Groesbeck Hall into a socially distanced drive-through experience where kids were handed treat bags of candy and crafts, cotton candy, candy apples, popcorn and more. They also played games along the way from the comfort of their vehicles. As they exited, they were able to pick out a pumpkin for their family. Thank you to all who attended.

WA L L FA M E Five of Holy Innocents’ all-time best athletes and one former administrator were inducted into the Wall of Fame Friday, Oct. 2, during halftime of the HIES-Loganville Christian football game. The Wall of Fame was established in 2008; it recognizes and honors outstanding varsity athletes, coaches, and/ or contributors who have demonstrated excellence in their athletic pursuits. The six inductees included Sarah Belisle, Owen Penn, Warner Ray, Connor Thompson, Chris Mann and former Athletic Director Rob Weltz.
At the ceremony, each received a commemorative plaque – a replica of the one displayed on the Wall of Fame in the Main Gym – as well as a “free ticket for life” to any HIES sporting event. Their contributions are as follows:
SARAH BELISLE '15 GIRLS’ SOCCER Sarah was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the varsity soccer team that compiled 44 wins during her tenure. With 22 career shutouts, her teams advanced to the playoffs every year, including two Elite 8 and two Final Four appearances. Named captain her junior and senior seasons, she was also named Best Defensive Player in those two years. She had multiple soccer collegiate offers and attended Furman University where she played club soccer. One of her many notable off-field honors was serving as Homecoming Queen her senior year.
OWEN PENN '14 BOYS’ LACROSSE Owen led the lacrosse team from his freshman through his senior season, leading the team in scoring his first three years before an injury-shortened final year. Our face-off man, he also remains a career leader in goals, assists and points, as well as second in ground balls. He also has records for ground balls in a season and second for goals in one game. Named First Team All A-Tournament for two years, he was selected All-State as a junior and Honorable Mention All-State his senior year. He also led in football and wrestling during his tenure.
WARNER RAY '14 BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY Warner was All-State in cross country all four years, meaning that he finished in the top-10 individually at every state tournament. Captain of the team his junior and senior seasons, he was on three state-contending teams his sophomore through senior years. Besides his successes in the 5K, he remains the school record holder in the 3,200-meter run and was the holder in the 1,600 and as a member of the 4 X 1600, and distance medley teams. He was also a two-time Middle School state cross country champion.
CONNOR THOMPSON '14 BOYS’ TENNIS Connor played the No. 1 singles position on the varsity tennis team all four years after finishing up an undefeated JV career. He went 62-1 during his tenure, while also leading the Bears to the state playoffs each season, which included an Elite 8 slot.
He went on to star at UNC-Greensboro on the courts where he played the top position there for most of those four years. Connor earned several Conference Playerof-the-Month honors while playing collegiately, despite playing against the top Division I programs in the country.
CHRIS MANN '09 WRESTLING Chris became one of our school’s first state champion wrestlers when he won the crown in 2009 by not allowing a single point from his opponents during the tournament. Named Second Team AllState that year, he won 161 matches over his time, and suffered only three losses his final season – all to nationally ranked grapplers. He was a senior captain and finished in the top-three all-time as far as career wins at HI. If this isn’t enough, he led his team to the school’s first ever Top 10 team finish before graduating.
ROB WELTZ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, 2000-2010 In the early 2000s, Rob became the school’s second Athletic Director in HI history, taking over for Emory “Buster” Brown. He served the position for nine years – his first being an interim before unanimously voted in for the job. Rob was and is an innovator. He initiated the football program at HI, which began with a JV team before becoming a state contender in years ahead. He also introduced both girls’ and boys’ lacrosse to our competitive slate, two sports that excelled right from the beginning. Congratulations to all!

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association exists to • encourage parental participation in the life of the school • better acquaint parents with the activities, programs and policies of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. • facilitate communication between parents and the school administration, faculty and staff • enrich the school’s academic and community programs. Additionally, the PA’s Fundraising and Community Life committees marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. In 2020, the Parents’ Association conducted several fundraising activities: the annual Tuition Raffle, sales of the Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse and Community Partner programs with the likes of Amazon, Publix, Kroger, and Mable’s Labels. The PA’s annual “Golden Bear Gala” was at the last minute held virtually due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the interruption of all in-person gatherings. Despite these circumstances, the Parents’ Association fundraising activities during the 2019-20 school year yielded significant revenues and enabled the PA to donate more than $315,000 directly to the School, benefitting HIES students and families. Said funds were committed to the Golden Bear Relief Fund, technology equipment to enable remote learning, the PA’s Capital Campaign pledge and the HIES Annual Fund. In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following programs, and offers them free of charge to the HIES community:
• Faculty and Staff appreciation events – including a festive Christmas Luncheon, “Teacher Treats” breakfast buffets, and other such special acknowledgments throughout the school year • Compelling Parent Education events with guest speakers and facilitators, funded by the Parents’ Association and offered free of charge to parents • HIES Around the World community culture celebration and potluck dinner • Special speakers, and outings to promote cultural awareness and drive inclusivity throughout our HIES parent community • 6th grade Cotillion class coordination • Prayer gathering for parents, held each month during the school year in Christ Chapel at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church • Support and service to HIES families in need through our Caring Bears program
GOLDEN BEAR GALA 2020 SPONSORS The Golden Bear Gala chairs and their Gala committee organized a fabulous event and a huge fundraising success, producing record revenues for any HI gala, topping $500,000. As always, the success of the Gala was fueled by the generous support from the event’s sponsors: Diamond Sponsor Chris M. Carlos, National Distributing Company Drs. Melisa Rathburn-Stewart and Michael Stewart, Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists HIGBY’s Heroes Kim and Doug Peterson Mebane and Neil Pruitt, PruittHealth Barton’s Buddies Chrissie and Jeff Bogart Gower, Wooten & Darneille LLC Laura and Peter Mace
• Parent representatives for each grade and division • “Buddy” families who welcome new families to HIES • Monthly grade-newsletters, chock full of timely information about HIES happenings and opportunities for parents to volunteer and get involved • Parent updates and information sharing via Facebook, text alerts and Instagram 55

ALLIANCE HO LY I N N O C ENT S ’
FINE ARTS ALLIANCE In 2019-2020, the Fine Arts Alliance raised more than $113,500 to support the following Fine Arts initiatives: • rental of the City Springs Theatre for our upper school play • guest clinicians for band • visiting artist in residence for our Visual Arts department • sponsor of the Atlanta Opera performance for the lower school • contribution to the HIES Our Time Capital Campaign • our continued academic affiliations with the High Museum of Art which benefits all HIES families.
Founded in 2003, the Fine Arts Alliance (FAA) continues to grow through enthusiastic parent support. With committed volunteers, we are able to offer more ways than ever to support the award-winning HIES Fine Arts Department. Since a strong Fine Arts program benefits all students, every parent is encouraged to become involved.
HEART FOR THE ARTS 2019
The FAA organizes parent volunteers to support chorus, band, orchestra, drama, visual arts, and media literacy programs. Parent volunteers assist in many areas, including receptions after performances, concessions, box office sales, and events like Open Mic Night, Movie Night, and the Upper School Film Festival. Additionally, the FAA decorates the campus for Christmas every year.
Da Vinci Sponsors Marie and Jim Hannon Tracy and Allan Merrill Becky and Dave Wallis
The FAA provides resources to our students and teachers as the result of our fund-raising efforts. Our largest fundraiser is Heart for the Arts, a fashion show with an art and jewelry market, silent and live auctions, and brunch. This year, the event takes place on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Dues collected from the Invest in Excellence Program make up another significant source of funds. Other parent-centered fundraising activities include the annual holiday greenery sale. Funds are raised throughout the school year through the concession and box office sales for four theatrical productions and a highly popular community-building movie night for the Primary School and Lower School students and their families.

HORIZONS ATLANTA Horizons Atlanta at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School believes that every child, regardless of background, should have the same chance at making a positive impact on his or her community. Our six-week academic enrichment program housed in the HIES Primary School and Upper School provides this opportunity to economically disadvantaged local public school students by eliminating critical barriers to success. Horizons students are challenged academically, socially, and physically through our Global Academy, a blend of project-based and service learning activities teaching each child how to be a productive global citizen.
Horizons secures funding from local foundations, individuals, corporations, and community organizations. In May of 2020, Horizons at HIES participated in Horizons Giving Day, a national effort to raise funds and awareness of the program. We surpassed our site’s goal of $40,000, thanks to many individual donations from the HIES community. The funds raised contribute to our operations and programming. The program would not be possible without the support of the Holy Innocents’ community. Horizons would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors, and advisory council members for their time, talents, and generous resources.
