Welcome

in this issue... REGULARS 10 What you need to do & when The sun is finally out! Well, it is today and fingers crossed it stays for the rest of the next few months so all of our summer brides can have the sunshine they are hoping for. We’re already halfway through the year (where has the time gone!) and looking ahead to the sumptuous autumn and winter weddings. We are seeing a move towards smaller, more intimate weddings which may prove more popular during the darker months when candle lit dinners in cosy venues come into their own. One of my favourite fabrics, velvet, is a rising trend and perfect for bringing warmth to weddings in the colder months. Bring on the grooms wearing velvet dinner jackets! But let us enjoy the summer first! Our fabulous new website went live in July (a little later than expected!), so if you’re still looking for your team of wedding professionals, head over to www.silverlinings.co.uk and check out our Wedding Directory. You’ll also find wonderfully inspiring blogs and practical planning downloads. Our magazine has been a successful planning tool for our brides and grooms for over 15 years, and we truly hope you’ll find this guide useful in planning your special once-in-alifetime wedding day.

GUIDE

to types of wedding ceremonies

8

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Marriage

Things have changed a bit since the only option for couples wanting to get married was a religious ceremony in the bride’s parish church and couples can now choose to seal their union in a way that best suits them. The legislation around who can marry who has also changed relatively recently and now, both heterosexual and same sex couples can get married in Register Offices and Approved Venues. TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS IN CHURCH Brides and grooms can, of course, still choose to get married in church and many do, even if they have already set up home together. These will be very traditional ceremonies conducted by the vicar and will include the classic ‘…to have and to hold…’ vows that we are all familiar with. REGISTER OFFICES There has also long been the option to get married in a Register Office, of which there are a number in Cornwall, and ceremonies held here have to be strictly non-religious, even down to the choice of music and readings. They must be conducted by a Registrar who is employed by the local authority and can include vows written by the couple as well as the statutory Declaratory Vows and Contractual Vows.

Around Cornwall, this includes castles, luxury hotels, beaches (under a roofed structure) and even a camel farm! Your local authority will have a full list of Approved Venues on their website. The chances are that any venue chosen will have a dedicated wedding co-ordinator or event planner who will help with all the arrangements. However, the couple themselves will each still have to apply for a Notice of Marriage at the Register Office in the district where they normally live, at least 28 days before the date of the ceremony. The legal aspect of a wedding in an Approved Venue is very similar to that of a Register Office wedding, must be conducted by a Registrar employed by the local authority and will also be entered into the Register there and then. However, couples can then choose to ask a celebrant or other person to lead a less formal celebration of their union where the choice of readings, songs, music etc. can be completely open. OTHER LEGAL WEDDING VENUES Some other venues can be the setting for a legal wedding ceremony. These include chapels or even private homes or hospitals in the case of someone who is seriously ill. CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS Civil partnerships are still available as an option for same sex couples and it is anticipated that this will extend to heterosexual couples at the end of 2019. There are some subtle differences in the paperwork for civil partnerships; for example, information on both the father & mother of both parties will be included in the schedule and the partnership is formed by the signing of the civil partnership document, as opposed to the sharing of vows as in a marriage.

The marriage is entered into the official Register and a marriage certificate written out during the ceremony and presented to the couple soon after.

Same sex couples who had a civil partnership can convert that to a marriage by signing a declaration at the Register Office. Then, a marriage ceremony can be organised in the usual way and a marriage certificate issued.

APPROVED VENUES The biggest change in recent years has been the introduction of Approved Venues. These are venues licenced by the local authority to host wedding ceremonies and this means that couples can now choose to get married in some spectacular locations.

Getting married or entering into a civil partnership is a legal process and so there are some defined steps to go through before and during the ceremony. But the most important thing is to choose a venue, type of ceremony and its content that mean most to the couple, their families and friends as they celebrate their love.

AND

READINGS Congratulations - you are getting married! This is such an exciting time but there are so many choices and decisions to make – venues, colours, flowers, dresses, suits – the list can feel endless. One of the most personal and important decisions is about the intimate heart of the day – your ceremony. However you choose to marry, be it Church, Civil Ceremony with the Registration Service or a celebration with a Celebrant, there are choices to be made. Whatever your choice, one of the ways you can personalise the ceremony is to include some personal vows and add in some readings.

WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOME TIPS ABOUT CREATING YOUR OWN VOWS: -K eep them simple, sincere and heartfelt – a little humour is a nice touch but don’t overdo it! -D on’t think you can ad lib on the day – this is such an important part of the ceremony – your vows need to be thought through! - These words become full of such strong emotion on your wedding day that you may find it difficult to speak – we suggest that 3-4 sentences is about the right length. -R emember that you have an audience who will be hearing your vows. -B e true to who you are and who you are as a couple.

14

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

STUCK FOR INSPIRATION? Take a look at poems, prose and song lyrics which you can adapt to suit you both. If you are working with a celebrant they can help you with suggestions, and they can also keep your vows secret from each other until the day making them a romantic surprise. A good celebrant will also moderate your individual vows for both length and tone to ensure they fully reflect you both. Readings are another wonderful way of injecting your personalities into the ceremony. From classic romantic poems and sonnets to humorous prose, and everything in-between. Choose something which speaks to you both, again song lyrics can work well. Alternatively, ask a guest to choose a reading as a surprise! Some couples have put together their favourite quotes on love, romance, life and marriage, and given them out randomly to their guests, who have then been asked to read the quotes out during the ceremony – a fun way to get everyone involved! We love to include something different – Bob Marley’s essay on love, the Dali Lama on marriage, traditional Taoist passages, and extracts from novels such as “The Amber Spyglass” by Phillip Pullman and “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho - there is so much choice! Some brides and grooms write their own poems or have guests that write and read one for them – how personal is that? We would suggest that 2 or 3 readings is about right for a ceremony however we recently conducted a ceremony with 7 and it worked so well – each was brilliantly delivered and had the right sentiment for the couple who were great Shakespeare fans.

Marriage

As Independent Celebrants we often get asked to include religious or spiritual readings into our ceremonies and we are happy to oblige. Civil Ceremonies with the Registration Service will not be able to use religious or spiritual readings and Ministers of Religion will also check the readings to be used to ensure their suitability. Our advice is – this is your wedding and your ceremony and everything in it should speak to your hearts and be true to your souls, and make you happy.

PLANNING FOR A

WEDDING

16

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Planning

There really is nothing we can do about the weather...including the rain! Rain on your wedding day is very possible in the UK, no matter the time of year. In fact, August is the wettest month of the year, even though it’s the most popular month to get married! There are some simple ways to make the best of it and ensure the weather won’t ruin your day. UMBRELLAS AND BLANKETS Make sure you have lots of umbrellas for guests, and an extra pretty one for you. With the rain usually comes the cold, so have blankets around for guests to throw over their shoulders or wrap over cold legs. Brollies Galore (brolliesgalore.co.uk) have a huge selection of umbrellas to buy or hire, while Ikea has fantastic cheap fleece blankets which can be popped in a basket. CATERING Be open to changing your catering and drinks reception plans. Rather than serving summery fizz on arrival, serve a warm apple cider or a sloe gin instead. Given enough notice, most caterers will be able to change the menu from a luxury BBQ to a warming plated menu. If you’d planned on an al fresco drinks reception, then putting up a funky capri tent to protect from a shower or two will keep you and your guests outside. BRIDAL WEAR Embrace the wellie boots! Have a pair of bridal white wellie boots from Funky Wellington Boots (funky-wellington-boots.co.uk) or add some colour to your dress with a pair of bright pink ones or even rainbow coloured! If you’re worried about the dash from the car to your venue, then Rainaway Bride (weddingdressraincover.com) has a white, waterproof hooded cloak (to protect your hair, veil and make-up too) that fits most gowns and trains, and the elasticated hem scoops up the dress away from puddles and mud. Don’t forget your waterproof mascara! PHOTOGRAPHS Most photographers will agree that a rainy day can give some stunning, dramatic photographs. The clouds in the sky soften the light which gives better photographs than the harsh light from a clear blue sky. Have a chat with your photographer and work out the wet weather plan for group shots and the more romantic ones of just the two of you. Remember to have fun - some of my favourite photos of couples are when they’ve been dancin’ in the rain!

Grooms

SPEAKING IN PUBLIC CAN BE A NERVE-WRACKING EXPERIENCE. BUT THESE HANDY TIPS WILL HELP YOU CAPTIVATE YOUR AUDIENCE! Practice. If your memory’s poor the practice will help you get familiar with the flow of the speech. If your memory’s great you’re lucky. In both circumstances we advise using cue cards. Why? Weddings are weird things; they’ve got the power to suck all logical thought from your brain! Cue cards give you a comfort blanket and, if you use them right, they don’t need to distract from the speech. Give copies of your cue cards to your best man to carry on the day; this is not one of those moments where people gather round you chanting ‘speech!’ and you have absolutely nothing to say. Be brief. The best advice for a prospective toaster is to keep it as concise as possible. While a detailed account of your friendship with the groom all the way from the sandbox and through school may be charming to you, the other guests want to drink and dance as soon as possible.

18

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Consider using a wedding quote to create a theme for your toast. A toast of even just a couple of heartfelt sentences is completely adequate. Speaking for two to three minutes should be the maximum - and plenty of time to say what you need to say. Be complementary and appropriate. As funny as some anecdotes may seem to you, any comments that navigate choppy waters for other guests should simply be left out of a speech. That means keep it clean, and keep exes, your own ego and any stories of past embarrassments far, far away from the happy wedding day. Every word you say should be focused on making the guests smile, not cringe. Be sincere. No matter what your personal style is, all anyone wants from a reception speech is to reiterate that this legal joining of the souls is a heart-warming event. That isn't to say that the guests are looking to the speeches to offer some deep insights on love, so speak from the heart, and the words will fall into place.

Grooms

ORDER OF SPEECHES Usually your Toastmaster or venue coordinator will introduce the first speech. Alternatively, ask an outgoing friend with a loud voice to step into the role! 1. Father of the bride or someone close to the bride 2. The groom 3. The best man or best men (or even best woman) 4. The bride or maid of honor (or anyone else who wants to speak) Father of the bride needs to: 1. Thank everyone for being part of the day 2. Thank those who contributed to the wedding, either financially or in time 3. Compliment the bride, welcome the groom and his family 4. Toast to the bride and groom The groom needs to: 1. Thank the father of the bride for his toast Be aware of body language. If you’ve got a mic in one hand, you’ll probably have champagne in the other, which takes care of the what-to-do-withyour-hands problem. It’s totally fine to walk around while you’re speaking if that makes you feel more comfortable, just be sure not to wander behind objects that will block you from view. Reading from cue cards is okay too, but if you’re constantly looking down, your voice won’t project as clearly and there won’t be as many opportunities for eye contact. Plus, it may not feel like it’s spoken from the heart.

2. Thank the guests for attending and for their gifts

Finish strong. When you’re arriving at the end of your toast, adjust your tone of voice accordingly so guests have an audible cue to raise their glasses. Take the time to look around the room and make eye contact, let your words sink in and allow yourself and your guests to share this special moment together.

2. C omment on the couple and tell stories about the groom

3. Thank both sets of parents and give gifts 4. Compliment his bride 5. Thank his best man/men/woman, toast the bridesmaids and give gifts The best man/men/woman needs to: 1. Thank the groom for asking his to be his best man/woman

3. Read out any messages from absent family and friends 4. Toast the bride and groom

Then toast to everyone who made your wedding possible and enjoy the rest of the celebration. Cake, anyone?

WAYS TO HAVE A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING DRESS Over the past few years, sustainability has increasingly become a significant issue in the fashion world, with the mass production of fast-fashion and the large sum of new garments burnt by leading designer brands adding to the deterioration of our environment. While the wedding dress industry doesn’t do as much damage to the environment as retail brands do, the waste of material for such high costs and little wear does still have an effect. Because of these ongoing issues that have been brought to the forefront of fashion news in the past few years, sustainability has become one of the newest trends in fashion. In order to support this new era of sustainable and eco-friendly clothing, here are five non-traditional ways in which you can help the environment when it comes to finding your wedding gown:

1

BUY VINTAGE OR PRE-LOVED Buying a vintage or pre-loved wedding dress is not only something which is now quite fashionable, but it is also more affordable and environmentally friendly than buying a brand-new dress. The perks of going pre-loved also include the variety of styles that you can choose from, whether you want a sleek and glamorous 1930s look or a more relaxed, boho-chic 1970s style. The cost of a vintage wedding dress will vary on the quality; however, they are more likely to be in the £100s instead of £1000s, and by reclaiming an old dress you are being sustainable in your purchase. Places to buy a vintage wedding dress can be at your local pre-loved bridal shop, vintage or charity store, or websites such as Etsy. Where can I buy? Pre-loved bridal wear from Two For Joy Bridal twoforjoybridal.co.uk

2

BUY A DRESS YOU CAN WEAR MORE THAN ONCE Although you may want a dress that is special specifically for your wedding day, it could be an idea to buy a dress you can wear for other occasions that isn’t just your wedding. By purchasing a dress that is either a different colour or altering it later, either by dyeing it or having it tailored, you would be able to have multiple uses from one dress. Where can I buy? Eliza Jane Howell available from The Bridal Room St Ives thebridalroomstives.co.uk

3

SHOP WITH ECO-FRIENDLY COMPANIES There are plenty of smaller companies that produce wedding dresses in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way than the mass producing, big designer brands. Whether they use recycled material or make to order, they are one step towards creating a better environment, while creating beautiful dresses. By just searching the internet for eco-friendly wedding dresses, you’ll have a sufficient amount of businesses coming up, or you could look on the aforementioned website Etsy, who support small, creative businesses. Where can I buy? Eco couture dresses from Claire L Headdon Bridal Designs clairelheaddon.com 22

4

WEAR A FAMILY HEIRLOOM This may already be a tradition in your family or could be the start of a new one. Wearing a dress of one of your family members, probably your mother’s or grandmother’s, can be a really nice way to be sentimental on your wedding day, fulfilling the ‘something borrowed and something old’ criteria as well. If you are not into a vintage or retro style, you could alter their dress into something new, meaning that you still have the sentimental value while having a new dress. Where can I buy? Alterations from Anna’s Sewing Room annasewingroom.co.uk

5

KEEP THE CYCLE GOING Your wedding dress is an item which carries a lot of sentimental value is indisputable. However, after having kept your dress for many years, it may be a good idea to donate your dress to one of the aforementioned causes, such as a vintage wedding dress store or to a family member to carry on traditions. Even if you do end up going down the normal route of buying a designer dress from a bridal store (which I have nothing against), you will still be able to achieve sustainability with your wedding dress if you follow this last step. Where can I buy? Clean and box up your dress at LJ Laundry Services ljlaundryservicesltd.co.uk

INSURING AGAINST THE UNEXPECTE WHY SHOULD I INSURE MY WEDDING? Though you might not want to think about it, disasters can strike your wedding day. From a sudden cancellation to stolen gifts to a damaged gown, wedding insurance can help protect you against the unforeseen, and can also afford you great peace of mind. But what exactly is wedding insurance, and how does it work? WHEN SHOULD YOU GET WEDDING INSURANCE? The sooner you buy your wedding insurance the sooner you’re covered, should something go wrong and you need to cancel, postpone or get a refund for one element of the wedding. This means you’d be covered should the venue be destroyed in a fire a year before your wedding date, or if a serious illness set in for a family member six months before the ceremony. WHAT DOES STAND-ALONE WEDDING INSURANCE COVER? All policies are different, but typically they cover the cancellation or rearrangement of a wedding or reception due to accident, illness or bereavement within the main wedding party, or if a supplier goes out of business. Most policies also cover loss or damage to the main wedding outfits; presents, rings; the cake and flowers; as well as the price of having to retake photographs and video; failure of wedding cars; and personal liability and legal expenses. The amount you can claim if things go wrong depends on the level of cover you purchased.

THE SMALL PRINT - WHAT WON’T IT COVER: -C old feet -C ancellation due to financial difficulties, other than redundancy -C ancellation if only a small part of the day goes wrong -P re-existing medical conditions that cause cancellation You can add other items to your policy such as: - I f bad weather ruins the experience i.e. for outdoor weddings -M arquee cover - Public liability for accidents your guests may have Always remember to check the small print! TOP TIPS FROM WEDDING INDUSTRY BUSINESSES

FLOWERS - VINTAGE & BLOOM Firstly look at as many florists as you can; follow them on Instagram as this will help you have an insight into how they work. Create a short list and arrange to meet up for a consultation. When you meet have a clear idea of the style and vision you are looking to achieve. A good florist will want to know all about your venue, dress and colour theme. They should be interested in you and be personable. The florist will help you decide on the style of bouquet that would work for you. Once you have shared your vision let them know your budget. Look at independent florists as they often use locally grown flowers. Be open to other options if that one flower you want isn’t in season. Don’t feel obligated to book with the first one you meet. If it feels right, you’ll know.

VENUE - WATERSIDE CORNWALL Do your research - look at the trip advisor / facebook reviews and you know when it’s the right venue in your heart. I always say to my couples to make sure you write everything down and make a list of things to do most of the time we can help with recommending businesses who we have worked with over the years. Make sure you try to stick to your budget, visit more than once to get a feel for the place, and always ask questions (wedding planners love questions). Space - take into consideration the size of your guest list before booking anywhere. When you get the feeling inside (like butterflies in your stomach) you can envisage yourself walking down the aisle then this feeling is the best feeling and you’ve found your dream venue.

BRIDAL WEAR - BRIDAL ROOM ST IVES So many dresses are now made to order for brides and this takes time. Aim to be shopping for your dress around 14-18 months before your wedding (or earlier!). Hopefully by 12 months before the big day you will have made a decision (which I’m sure won’t be easy!) and have placed your order. Our dresses normally take between 6-8 months to come in. Once the dress has arrived you’ll need to allow time for 2 alterations. Remember you’ll need your shoes and underwear for the fittings so I would recommend shopping for these once you’ve ordered your dress. Think outside the box when it comes to shoes! This is the perfect opportunity to add colour (or your ‘something blue’) to your whole outfit. MAKEUP - JEN CHAUHAN – MAKEUP ARTIST Bring the old fashioned blotting sheets! While you may be tempted to pack a powder in your wedding purse and dust over when you start to go shiny - don’t! You can create a caked-on look, which will show up in your photos; if you’re not using professional powders, they can cause an unflattering ghostly white look. Always reach for a blotting sheet to absorb the oil as they won’t disturb the makeup. They just lift away the oil for a shine-free finish.

MARQUEE - ABSOLUTE CANVAS When you’re hiring a marquee, it’s important to get it right. And that means asking some important questions before you decide on the marquee style that’s right for you. There are 2 types of marquees; a Traditional Canvas marquee with guy ropes, pins and wooden poles, or a Clear span which is PVC and metal frame. They both have a very different feel, long banquet or round tables, top table or an oval table in between your guests. Ask the marquee company to show you photos to help you decide. Make 2 plans for the day - one sunny and one rainy - that way you a fully prepared in advance.

A marquee is a blank canvas for the bride and grooms to be able to put their individual design, and their personalities really shine though making their memorable day one to remember. silverlinings.co.uk

You can almost hear the sound of the ropes creaking on old ships and clatter of horses in the streets. Concentrate enough and you can smell the rum and pipe smoke in the air. Well, that is what goes through my mind when I close my eyes! So when it came to the photo shoot around Falmouth I wanted to take in some of the famous landmarks in the town - The Chain Locker, Pendennis Castle - who have seen their fair share of maritime history.

No place in Falmouth has seen more history than the majestic Pendennis Castle sitting aloft the town, protecting the Carrick Roads from enemies to the Crown.

Built by John Killigrew on his land in 1540 on the orders of Henry VIII, the castle and the Killigrew family transformed Falmouth from a small village called Pennycomequick outside Penryn to one of England’s busiest ports just 70 years later. The local newspaper, the Falmouth Packet, is named after the Packet Service which ran out of Falmouth for 160 years from 1689, delivering mail and news to and from the growing British Empire. The first news of Admiral Nelson’s death at Trafalgar arrived in Falmouth and went straight to London by stagecoach. Charles Darwin arrived here aboard the HMS Beagle in 1836 after the end of her noted survey voyage around the world. As well as Pendennis Castle, we are spoilt for choice of wedding venues - The Falmouth Hotel, St Michael’s Resort, The Greenbank. Then there are the less obvious wedding venues like the National Maritime Museum and Trebah Gardens.

Walking along the cobbled streets you’ll also find one of the oldest jewellers in Cornwall, Wearnes, who first opened in 1890.

Wearnes have become known for producing Cornish Tin & Gold, using Cornish tin ingots from the wreck of the SS Liverpool which sank in 1863. They have also collaborated with Ocean Diamonds, another Falmouth company, who dive for diamonds off the African coast. All of the wedding businesses we had the pleasure of working with on the photo shoot are based in or close to Falmouth, whether they were born here (John & Angela from Vintage & Bloom, Claire from Claire L Headdon and Gemma from Brides To Be), or drawn to relocate here because of Falmouth’s ‘je ne sais quoi’.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Supplier focus

A lot of my designs are made with the ability to reuse, like wearing a lace top with a nice pair of jeans or dyeing the silks to fit in with your existing wardrobe.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND I’m a proper Cornish maid, from Truro originally. I’ve lived in Cornwall all my life and moved to Falmouth about 10 years ago. I just fell in love with its creativity and individuality. Many of my friends here are pursuing their own creative ventures, which is so exciting to see. DID YOU STUDY OR WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO SEW All I have ever known is sewing, that was all I was fascinated by when I was growing up, taking clothes apart to see how they were made and then stitching them back together. My nan started teaching me when I was 7 and I am incredibly grateful to her for starting that passion for me, it’s the reason why I’m doing what I am! WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? My home, my family and people who inspire me. I’m very much someone who finds people fascinating, we’re all so different, we have different drives and passions in life, which is what makes life so interesting. Especially when it comes to creativity, I think it should be a mixture of self-reflection, self-development and inspiration from other minds.

WHAT CAN WE SEE IN FUTURE DESIGNS FROM CLAIRE L HEADDON? I tend to be the type of designer who focuses on classic, long lasting designs, particularly from an eco-friendly standpoint. I like my dresses to be easy and comfortable, with a lot of the focus being on the silk fabrics themselves. I think it’s extremely important to work with the bride herself to see exactly what works for her, what she feels comfortable and beautiful in, as each person is completely different. That’s what makes it so rewarding! AND WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING DRESSES, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO? In my spare time you can usually find me cozied up with a book somewhere or listening to a podcast. My second love in life is history, I have whole bookshelves dedicated to the Tudors, the World Wars, Queen Victoria and Archaeology. I love to learn!

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE DESIGNERS? Oh that’s quite a hard question, as it changes a lot. I tend to have a love for individual designs rather than specific designers. Having said that, I do have a love for anything Haute Couture, Chanel, Dior, Givenchy. It’s such a beautiful and fascinating art form. The inside of their garments are just as beautiful as the outside! TELL US MORE ABOUT SOURCING YOUR FABRICS? I think I have a responsibility as a designer to promote a healthy textile industry, so I decided I was going to design a bridal collection using only organic and fair trade silks. Each item of clothing we choose to buy impacts our planet and ourselves, including a wedding dress, so choosing to design more thoughtfully and with longevity in mind is really important. silverlinings.co.uk

WITH CHARLIE REILLY

This wedding oozed summer festival vibes! The fields were adorned with beautiful silk flags reminiscent of Glastonbury, the tables were glowing with sunflowers and The quiet Cornish lanes were lit up with colourful smoke bombs. This was the wedding of dreams for any festi-val loving couple! Ellie and Duane had planned their weekend long wedding with precision and it certainly paid off! It resulted in a fun packed weekend of Ibiza anthems, glitter bar fun and outdoor partying in the glorious Cornish sunshine. With its subtropical climate you could have been mistaken for thinking you were partying in the Balearic Islands!

HASHTAG YOUR WEDDING #duelliefest

Tremorna Farm (tremornafarm.co.uk) is the perfect location for a festival style wedding with over 6 acres of flat fields and far reaching sea views at your disposal to design your dream wedding! The farm is set back on a peaceful and quiet tiny back lane between Mousehole and Lamorna Cove.

THE CEREMONY The ceremony took place under a homemade flower archway by the ancient standing stone at Tremorna Farm. Ellie walked down the aisle to the fabulous sound of steel pans as guests sat around on hay bales which were later put to great use by the children as a fortress!! PARTY TIME When the ceremony had concluded the vibrant partygoers began the festivities! They drank fizz in the sun surrounded by family, friends and sunflowers!

As a number of guests were also DJs they really knew how to party the night away and they certainly did!

GLAMPING They danced the night away in the warm evening air and when the sun went down and they could dance no more over 100 festival loving guests stayed in luxury bell tents for a weekend of glamping fun! Ellie and Duane made the most of the vast space by splitting the camps into different areas for quiet campers and party goers.

LITTLE TOUCHES What stood out about E&D’s wedding was the number of ways they were able to bring colour and fun into every aspect of their wedding. From Ellie’s incredible wedding dress to the handmade bunting (that took them over a year to make!). FOOD STALLS White Radish provided street food stalls and a ‘Club Tropicana‘ styled bar for which the bride and groom supplied the drinks tokens. Guests were encouraged to bake their best dessert for an informal dessert station later in the evening.

54

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

POST WEDDING Making the most of their weekend, the party resumed the following day but with more of an Ibiza Chillout Sessions / Club Del Mar vibe. The dynamic duo had another fun-packed day of karaoke, outdoor games and a pub quiz! Guests were free to come and go as they pleased and really relax and enjoy the weekend’s festivities. VENUE FOR CEREMONY We live in Newquay and it is also where we met. It was the only place on the list; why would we want to get married anywhere else! Lusty Glaze was the first venue we went to see and instantly fell in love with the cove. We did try and look elsewhere but nothing was a match to this gorgeous place on the beach. RECEPTION When looking for something to accommodate the number of guests for the evening reception, this place had all the boxes ticked. Great space to create what we wanted, a hotel for people to stay overnight, located in the centre of town, and another amazing view of Newquay Bay at sunset. DRESSES With not much knowledge of where to start with this, it actually turned out to be a lot easier than we first thought, and this is all thanks to Wed2Be. We saw them advertised online as and ‘off the rack place’ and quite literally assumed it was going to be like shopping in any other department store. Well, how we got this wrong; from the moment we walked into the shop until when we left with our dresses in hand the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. VENUE DÉCOR Rebecca Masters (Newquay Wedding Company) provided the chair sashes, mirrored centrepieces and bunting. After shopping around, she came back with the best price that also included delivery and collection from Lusty Glaze, which we had found hard to get due to the steps down to the venue. We also had two close friends, Faith and Alice, who spent weeks getting all the decorations organised for us for the evening venue. This was ideal as it took so much of the pressure away from us.

PHOTOGRAPHY Being from Newquay we both know Carolyn and Pat very well, which made something that we both were not to keen on, a very comfortable and FUN experience. We couldn’t of asked for more from the pre-shoot right up to the wedding day. The photos have really captured the essence of the day and have given us something to cherish for life. BRIDAL HAIR We have known Kate for a few years now and she has been Steph’s hairdresser for years. She has recently opened her owned business Katie B’s Hair Salon in the Hotel California and we opted for her as we wanted to use our local traders - and what a great decision this was. From numerous hair trials, the morning hair and the late night touch ups, she was fantastic. MAKE UP Another local trader and close friend of ours, Pippa, Bailie and Tach made us look just how we wanted to look for our special day, especially as we don’t wear makeup normally. All of the girls did an amazing job, from trials to the actual day. CHILDCARE As we had opted for no children during our ceremony but still wanted all of our families to be involved in the day, we decided that the best way around this was to hire childcare for the important part of the day. The feedback we received from the children and parents was fantastic.

The children got to have a lovely day on the beach and the parents could comfortably watch us become Mrs and Mrs. ENTERTAINMENT A very local band with a fantastic reputation - and a reputation well earned! We have seen them play at various locations in our town and we just felt that there was no other option for the day. And they really did keep the dancefloor full!

Take me to the

INSPIRED BY ‘LABYRINTH’

We wanted to create a photo shoot using some of the dark fairytale elements from the film Labyrinth. For the model, we chose embellished headwear, a n 80’s style up-do with twisted hair braids and plenty of glitter in her makeup. We wanted to create a look that captured ‘Sarah’s’ utterly awesome 80’s fairytale ball gown when dancing when in the bubble with the Goblin King but with a modern romantic twist.

Inspiration

For the table styling we used stone effect charger plates were inspired by the stone walls of the labyrinth and the goblin castle.

The keys on the place names were a reference to when ‘Sarah’ has to choose the right door to go forward through the labyrinth. Crushed velvet, cut glass and vintage cutlery added a gothic style opulence that was associated with the 80’s when the film was made.

CEREMONY - ST.PIRANS We chose this church as many generations of my family have been married here and we had our two sons christened there. DRESS We met the ladies who own this shop at the Lanhydrock wedding fayre and I instantly loved the dresses they had on display. I showed them a picture of the sort of dress that I wanted and they said that they had a similar one in stock, so we paid them a visit in Mevagissey. The ladies were lovely and friendly and at no time was there any hard sell. My dress was the first one that I tried on and I fell in love with it straight away. I had an additional layer of glitter added to my dress to give it some extra sparkle! BRIDAL HAIR & MAKE UP With our hair, we all had an idea of what we wanted and everyone, including myself, was so pleased with their hair. Mine and my Mum’s makeup was done by Emma Wood from Beautique in Newquay; she came to my Mum’s house and did an amazing job! EXTRAS We had a chocolate fountain which was provided by Absolute Chocolate and proved very popular!!

PHOTOGRAPHY We met Elizabeth at the Royal Cornwall Show last year and instantly liked her relaxed humorous manner and her photos she had on display were beautiful. FLOWERS Tracy was so helpful when we met her at the Alverton wedding fayre. I had a fountain bouquet with white roses dipped in glitter and forget-meknots with some gypsophila. The bridesmaids and flower girls had hand tied bouquets with the same flowers and Chris and his groomsmen had white roses as their buttonholes. CAKE We had four tiers of chocolate, lemon and two layers of salted caramel. It was beautifully decorated to our powder blue colour scheme and some glitter was added to the white tiers. We had a tasting session with them and their cakes were delicious! STATIONERY Sarah provided all of our wedding stationery which was all decorated beautifully with lace, powder blue ribbon and a diamond heart. She

also provided our seating plan and table names to go with our Harry Potter theme. THEMES & COLOUR SCHEMES Our colour scheme was powder blue and cream with a little bit of glitter! The Harry Potter theme was added to the wedding breakfast. VENUE DECOR My Mum and I made the wedding favours along the theme of Harry Potter. These were mini potion bottles filled with either cherry or apple sours and golden snitches which were ferrero rochers with wings added. We put together all the lantern centerpieces and table runners. We also put candles and scattered gems onto the tables. The hotel provided the chair sashes through one of their suppliers, so we just had to pick the colour that we wanted. TRANSPORT They added blue ribbons to the outside and we gave them some Prosecco which they kept in a cooler for Chris and I to enjoy after the ceremony on the journey to the Falmouth Hotel. As an added bonus he drove us through Falmouth town with the roof down and we had lots of lovely compliments.

With Emily Hankins

Tiny cake tables in corners with wonky white table clothes are a thing of the past... let’s face it this is the most expensive cake purchase you are ever likely to make, so let’s show it off and really make it a special centerpiece at your reception!

68

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS Once the I-dos are over you will have a beautiful bouquet and perhaps smaller posies that will need a home. Think about using these on your cake table to frame your cake. It will make a lovely display and give your guests the opportunity to not only enjoy your cake but your gorgeous wedding flowers too! I loved bringing some of the fresh flowers from the brides bouquet into this cake design to really bring this display together.

Cakes NOT JUST ONE CAKE Why have one wedding cake when you could have a whole dessert table! Dessert tables are a super fun option for couples who want to offer their guests a selection of tasty treats, perhaps as part of their dessert option! You can still have a main focal cake for that all-important cake cutting shot alongside other cakes and treats in colours and designs to match! I loved creating this cake table with its focal hand painted cake and smaller rustic iced cakes with hand crafted butterflies and fresh flowers. There were also hand painted cookie pops to match the cake and French macarons in complementary colours!

MORE THAN A TABLE Have some fun displaying your wedding cake by using an interesting piece of furniture! You might have something suitable at home already or you might find something in a local charity shop that you could upcycle and then keep as a memory of your big day! There are also lots of unique hire companies out there with lots of fab pieces of furniture just waiting for their big moment! I love the way that the tables used to display both of my cakes below really match the cakes personality!

© Olivia Bossert photography

SOMETHING PERSONAL There are sadly often people who can’t be with us on our big day or memories of other family weddings that you would like to share with your guests. I loved how this couple really made the most of celebrating their family as part of their cake table display with framed photos all in black and white to complement their burgundy and grey cake. © Liberty Pearl Photography

AND FOR THE BRAVE... Are you having an open air wedding? Nobody says you have to keep your wedding cake inside! Best check the weather first for this one though! (Seriously - cakes outdoors in the sun are not the best idea but it does look super gorgeous!!) I always enjoy seeing how couples style their cake table! If you are not sure what to do always ask your cake maker -we will have lots of ideas for you and can help you choose something that fits you and your cake perfectly!

Beauty

Preparing your skin for a natural WITH JEN CHAUHAN

Great skin is the perfect base for beautiful make-up, so start by ensuring you have an easy skincare routine at least six months before your wedding. Simply start with a good cleanser, appropriate for your skin-type, in the mornings and a make-up remover plus cleanser at night. There’s nothing worse than sleeping with dirt, grime and make-up on your face! Your engaged, so start this now: Hyaluronic Acid is an absolute must have - this gel-like water-holding molecule is a moisturebinding ingredient that helps keep skin plump and hydrated. It’s actually something our bodies naturally produce, but thanks to the everyday environment and ageing, our levels are always dipping. It works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels and appears hydrated, plump, radiant, healthy, with lines and wrinkles diminishing. Just a single gram of it has the ability to hold up to six litres of water.

Dermaplaning - it’s a very gentle way to get rid of peach fuzz, while exfoliating and improving the skin’s overall texture. Putting on makeup after a treatment feels effortless. OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS Facial masks will help to get rid of layers of dead, dry and dull skin, ultimately reducing breakouts, minimise pores and giving a healthy glow. I personally recommend a mild exfoliating cream and a volcanic ash mask, this is just divine on your skin. Facial oils - the idea of adding oil to acne-prone skin can sound daunting, but the key lies in finding the right oil. For oily skin, look for oils meant for acne-prone, oily skin opposed to those meant to hydrate dry skin (and vice-versa for dry skin). A light layer of the right oil works to balance your skin’s natural oils and reduce the appearance of breakouts overnight. 3 MONTHS PRIOR Dehydration and nutrient deficiencies can play a major role in skin health. Wine is such a bad dehydrator, capillary-breaker, and radiancerobber – keep the vino for the wedding day! 1 MONTH PRIOR Subtle or full blown lashes are so in. No worrying about the mascara running when you cry.

Getting your first full set a few weeks prior, is recommended, then I’d recommend returning 3 to 4 days before the wedding for an in-fill. BEFORE

AFTER

Beauty

YOUR WEDDING DAY 1. Apply a primer which will reduce lines and act like a glue for your foundation - last thing you want is for your foundation to slide off. Timeless makeup is by far the best. My biggest piece of advice - stay away from extremes of any kind. It’s about balance and softness. Want to rock a red lip for your wedding? Okay, but keep the lip line soft and undefined. 2. Contouring can be flattering when done right, so build up the colour slowly with just a hint of depth under the cheekbones. Very subtle, very timeless! 3. For a dewy glow all day long, invest in a good setting/ hydrating spray. You can also use this throughout the day when you need a little extra dewiness. 4. Try not stressing out about the little details and get plenty of rest leading up will help your skin glow. Take the pressure off and allow a makeup artist to make you into the beautiful blushing bride.

8TH SEPTEMBER

EARLY DAYS Francesca and Ross met at a mutual friends anniversary party. They were friends for a few years and eventually, something just clicked... THE PROPOSAL Ross proposed on the 26th May 2018. He hired a boat from Mylor and packed a picnic. Outside the Pandora Inn he asked Francesca to stand at the end of the boat to take a photo and when she turned around he was down on one knee with the ring box open in his hands. “I was totally surprised and began to cry!”

THE GRANDEUR OF SCORRIER HOUSE Francesca and Ross had been invited to a friend’s wedding the year before at Scorrier House. Francesca loved the tapestry in the main hall and also how grand it was. It was the perfect venue for them! IT WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO BE SEPTEMBER THE 8TH “When we got engaged I asked Ross when he’d like to get married... he replied, “I don’t know, maybe September 8th”. Very random date I know.”

A UNIQUE TYPE OF WEDSPIRATION. 72

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Real weddings

TOP TIP Just relax and enjoy every minute. It goes so quickly!

When they called Scorrier House to see what their availability was, the only date they had available until the year after was September the 8th! Spooky! They then contacted the DJ that they both really wanted; it was apparent that his only available weekend that year was also September 8th! “So it seemed that September 8th was the day we were meant to get married. It all fell into place so perfectly.” DJ BRET GILMAN The couple chose Bret Gilman, a DJ from London. Bret has performed at many world famous festivals and night clubs such as Coachella, Glastonbury and Ministry Of Sound! WOW!! THE DRESS Francesca’s dress was a Morilee dress by Madeline Gardner, which was customised by adding some cuffed sleeves to complete the look. She also wore some delicate earrings and a necklace and to complete the look a flower crown in her hair.

THE SUITS If there was a colour scheme it was “different shades of grey”. Ross wore a suit from Trevails in Truro, a grey Herbie Frogg, three-piece suit. Ross’ suit was different from the groomsmen, who wore navy blue suits from Reiss but had the same tie as Ross. ON THE DAY On the day they were both excited, nervous, emotional, and overwhelmed. “The whole day was amazing! I wouldn’t be able to say a specific time that stood out most but maybe the moment I said I do!” VENUE: Scorrier House scorrierhouse.co.uk PHOTOGRAPHER: Jack Westhead Photography jackwestheadphotography.com DRESS: Madeline Gardner (New York) madelinegardnernewyork.com MAKEUP: Stacey Cremin Makeup makeup-artist-cornwall.co.uk GROOM’S SUIT: Trevails trevails.co.uk FLOWERS: Vintage & Bloom via Facebook CATERING: Kittow’s Quality Meats kittowsqualitymeats.co.uk ENTERTAINMENT: DJ Bret Gilman

CHURCH We love St Breoke Church and loved the idea of getting married in a ceremony that reflected spirituality and religion together. Dom, our vicar, was very relaxed and totally on board with a less traditional ceremony.

Our dog Freddie walked down the aisle and we ditched traditional hymns in favour of The Grace Notes.

MEMORABLE MOMENT Walking down the aisle to The Beatles echoing around the church, seeing the smiley face s of all my loved ones and the man of my dreams at the altar

ENTERTAINMENT I booked The Grace Notes for an event 2 years ago, and they were INCREDIBLE; they were a fantastic party band that secured a fun evening. When I got engaged, the first thing I did was to contact The Grace Notes to see what availability they had for 2019 (this was before I have even booked the church or looked into venues!). I was at first disappointed when they told me that they were changing their approach this year to focus more on Gospel Singing and Smooth Jazz. However, after some thought and discussion with my fiance we decided that this could be a really great way to make our wedding a little different. We went ahead and booked them for the church and soon after also booked them for the drinks reception. Ley was fantastic at talking me through some recommendations for songs and she offered a great selection of songs to choose from. They certainly did not disappoint on the day. It made the whole atmosphere in the church happy and uplifting with guests dancing and singing along. Probably one of my favourite moments of the whole wedding!

TOP TIP Don’t be afraid to think a little outside the box, especially when it com es to ‘tradition’ and ‘protocols’. It is the quirks and slightly different app roach that was memorable for us and our guests. Most wedding provide rs are happy to work with you and your ideas. CATERING The Round Kitchen came highly recommended from Richard at Pengenna and did not fail to impress in every single way. The food was fantastic and attention to detail beautiful. COCKTAIL BAR We hired the ‘Rhubarb Roller’ from Rhubarb and Sage cocktail bar in Wadebridge. They bought along their converted horse box and served a selection of cocktails that we had chosen to our guests throughout the evening, as well as some unique gin concoctions. DECOR We had a very rustic theme with blush pink and eucalyptus green tones, using lots of natural wood with as much as possible sourced from our home at Trevanson Farm, including the log slices and branches attached to the ceiling. We wanted the theme to reflect our love of upcycled and vintage furnishings and fittings.

STATIONERY I made it all myself using images from Pinterest. I really enjoyed designing and personalising the invitations, it gave me a real sense of achievement and I had lots of lovely comments. FAVOURS Last autumn we picked thousands of sloes from around our farm and over winter we made litres of sloe gin. We transferred this into small corked bottles and labelled it as ‘Trevanson Sloe Gin’.
