in this issue... REGULARS 4 Prize draw 5 Wedding fair diary 10 What you need to do & when The sun is finally out! Well, it is today and fingers crossed it stays for the rest of the next few months so all of our summer brides can have the sunshine they are hoping for. We’re already halfway through the year (where has the time gone!) and looking ahead to the sumptuous autumn and winter weddings. We are seeing a move towards smaller, more intimate weddings which may prove more popular during the darker months when candle lit dinners in cosy venues come into their own. One of my favourite fabrics, velvet, is a rising trend and perfect for bringing warmth to weddings in the colder months. Bring on the grooms wearing velvet dinner jackets! But let us enjoy the summer first! Our fabulous new website went live in July (a little later than expected!), so if you’re still looking for your team of wedding professionals, head over to www.silverlinings.co.uk and check out our Wedding Directory. You’ll also find wonderfully inspiring blogs and practical planning downloads. Our magazine has been a successful planning tool for our brides and grooms for over 15 years, and we truly hope you’ll find this guide useful in planning your special once-in-alifetime wedding day.

GUIDE
to types of wedding ceremonies

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Marriage
Things have changed a bit since the only option for couples wanting to get married was a religious ceremony in the bride’s parish church and couples can now choose to seal their union in a way that best suits them. The legislation around who can marry who has also changed relatively recently and now, both heterosexual and same sex couples can get married in Register Offices and Approved Venues. TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS IN CHURCH Brides and grooms can, of course, still choose to get married in church and many do, even if they have already set up home together. These will be very traditional ceremonies conducted by the vicar and will include the classic ‘…to have and to hold…’ vows that we are all familiar with. REGISTER OFFICES There has also long been the option to get married in a Register Office, of which there are a number in Cornwall, and ceremonies held here have to be strictly non-religious, even down to the choice of music and readings. They must be conducted by a Registrar who is employed by the local authority and can include vows written by the couple as well as the statutory Declaratory Vows and Contractual Vows.
Around Cornwall, this includes castles, luxury hotels, beaches (under a roofed structure) and even a camel farm! Your local authority will have a full list of Approved Venues on their website. The chances are that any venue chosen will have a dedicated wedding co-ordinator or event planner who will help with all the arrangements. However, the couple themselves will each still have to apply for a Notice of Marriage at the Register Office in the district where they normally live, at least 28 days before the date of the ceremony. The legal aspect of a wedding in an Approved Venue is very similar to that of a Register Office wedding, must be conducted by a Registrar employed by the local authority and will also be entered into the Register there and then. However, couples can then choose to ask a celebrant or other person to lead a less formal celebration of their union where the choice of readings, songs, music etc. can be completely open. OTHER LEGAL WEDDING VENUES Some other venues can be the setting for a legal wedding ceremony. These include chapels or even private homes or hospitals in the case of someone who is seriously ill. CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS Civil partnerships are still available as an option for same sex couples and it is anticipated that this will extend to heterosexual couples at the end of 2019. There are some subtle differences in the paperwork for civil partnerships; for example, information on both the father & mother of both parties will be included in the schedule and the partnership is formed by the signing of the civil partnership document, as opposed to the sharing of vows as in a marriage.
The marriage is entered into the official Register and a marriage certificate written out during the ceremony and presented to the couple soon after.
Same sex couples who had a civil partnership can convert that to a marriage by signing a declaration at the Register Office. Then, a marriage ceremony can be organised in the usual way and a marriage certificate issued.
APPROVED VENUES The biggest change in recent years has been the introduction of Approved Venues. These are venues licenced by the local authority to host wedding ceremonies and this means that couples can now choose to get married in some spectacular locations.
Getting married or entering into a civil partnership is a legal process and so there are some defined steps to go through before and during the ceremony. But the most important thing is to choose a venue, type of ceremony and its content that mean most to the couple, their families and friends as they celebrate their love.

AND
READINGS Congratulations - you are getting married! This is such an exciting time but there are so many choices and decisions to make – venues, colours, flowers, dresses, suits – the list can feel endless. One of the most personal and important decisions is about the intimate heart of the day – your ceremony. However you choose to marry, be it Church, Civil Ceremony with the Registration Service or a celebration with a Celebrant, there are choices to be made. Whatever your choice, one of the ways you can personalise the ceremony is to include some personal vows and add in some readings.
WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOME TIPS ABOUT CREATING YOUR OWN VOWS: -K eep them simple, sincere and heartfelt – a little humour is a nice touch but don’t overdo it! -D on’t think you can ad lib on the day – this is such an important part of the ceremony – your vows need to be thought through! - These words become full of such strong emotion on your wedding day that you may find it difficult to speak – we suggest that 3-4 sentences is about the right length. -R emember that you have an audience who will be hearing your vows. -B e true to who you are and who you are as a couple.
14
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
STUCK FOR INSPIRATION? Take a look at poems, prose and song lyrics which you can adapt to suit you both. If you are working with a celebrant they can help you with suggestions, and they can also keep your vows secret from each other until the day making them a romantic surprise. A good celebrant will also moderate your individual vows for both length and tone to ensure they fully reflect you both. Readings are another wonderful way of injecting your personalities into the ceremony. From classic romantic poems and sonnets to humorous prose, and everything in-between. Choose something which speaks to you both, again song lyrics can work well. Alternatively, ask a guest to choose a reading as a surprise! Some couples have put together their favourite quotes on love, romance, life and marriage, and given them out randomly to their guests, who have then been asked to read the quotes out during the ceremony – a fun way to get everyone involved! We love to include something different – Bob Marley’s essay on love, the Dali Lama on marriage, traditional Taoist passages, and extracts from novels such as “The Amber Spyglass” by Phillip Pullman and “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho - there is so much choice! Some brides and grooms write their own poems or have guests that write and read one for them – how personal is that? We would suggest that 2 or 3 readings is about right for a ceremony however we recently conducted a ceremony with 7 and it worked so well – each was brilliantly delivered and had the right sentiment for the couple who were great Shakespeare fans.
Marriage
As Independent Celebrants we often get asked to include religious or spiritual readings into our ceremonies and we are happy to oblige. Civil Ceremonies with the Registration Service will not be able to use religious or spiritual readings and Ministers of Religion will also check the readings to be used to ensure their suitability. Our advice is – this is your wedding and your ceremony and everything in it should speak to your hearts and be true to your souls, and make you happy.

VENUE - BARTON HALL When you have contacted a venue/met with the wedding planner, did you feel a good rapport with the wedding planner and did they make you feel confident in their ability to deliver the wedding day that you are hoping for? Many of the couples who choose Barton Hall over other venues do so because not only is our venue beautiful and unique, our Wedding Coordinator takes the time to listen and understand their requirements of how they want their wedding day to go and works with them to make it happen rather than stating “this is the way each wedding runs.

Ask the expert CAKE - JLR BAKED KREATIONS Do your homework! Although we understand that weddings are expensive, a cheap cake does not always mean good cake; for wedding cakes there is more work involved and a legitimate supplier will value their time and use quality ingredients. Ask to see pictures of previous wedding cakes and look online for reviews. Check the local council for hygiene ratings and make sure they have public liability insurance; without this you will not be covered if anything goes wrong on the day. Most wedding cake suppliers will give you the option to go for a cake tasting session...take it! Not only does your cake have to look good but you want it to taste great too!
STATIONERY - HALF PINT PRINT You’re engaged! Congrats! Now the fun begins, starting with stationery. Many people overlook the importance of their wedding stationery. However, your stationery is the perfect way to showcase to your guests the style of your wedding and illustrate your personality. It’s important to spend time researching the kind of stationery that you love. It’s the perfectstarting point for choosing your theme and colour schemes. Then, find a stationer who cancreate your design and carry it throughout your wedding. Don’t forget your items for thewedding day itself - decorations, table plans and place settings. It’s the simple things thatreally will give your wedding that beautiful personal feel.
PHOTOGRAPHY - EMMA DB PHOTOGRAPHY Do you like the photographer's style? This is one of the most important things to consider! As a bride myself, once I'd seen photos I liked, it was hard to forget my favourites when looking at other options. It can be overwhelming and they do all start to look similar. If that's the case, take a step back. Plan other parts of your wedding and come back to choosing your photographer a few days later. I found that worked for me and 2 years later I still love looking through my wedding photos!

Bridebook Wedding Report 2018 said
HERE’S SOME TIPS ON DECIDING YOUR GUEST LIST AND AVOIDING THE STRESS! UNDERSTAND YOUR GOALS Use your budget and venue capacity as guides to help you set a realistic figure. If you already have an idea on catering, this will have the most impact on your budget (after your venue) so deciding if you want elaborate 4-course fine dining or street food served from vans is important from the outset. DETERMINE YOUR IMPORTANT GUESTS When you start building your list, put down everyone who you couldn’t have a wedding without them there, from family members to old school buddies. Just for this part, take your budget and venue out of the equation. You may have to trim later but for now, this is a good starting point. MANAGE YOUR FAMILY’S EXPECTATIONS Sometimes couples feel pressured into inviting certain friends of their parents or distant relatives because they are not entirely footing the bill themselves. If you accept any generous contributions to your wedding fund, determine if there are strings attached ahead of time. Have an honest discussion with your parents/ in-laws/grandparents/etc. to see if their financial assistance comes with any requirements (or even any subtle “hopes”) about the guests, the venue, or other wedding details. THE NUMBER OF GUESTS WILL AFFECT YOUR BUDGET Each guest affects a large number of elements of your wedding, from the number of plates your caterer will prepare, to place settings needed, to stationery items, to favors, and even to how much cake you’ll need. It’s much better to keep your number on the conservative side; avoid over inviting as you’ll be holding your breath every time you open an RSVP. If there’s room in the budget or you end up having more space than you thought you would, add later on.
24%
OF COUPLES
...found managing their guest list the most chall enging part of wedding plann ing.
CREATE YOUR ‘CUTTING’ RULES When it comes to trimming the guest list, decide on how you’ll decide on who makes the list and stick to the rules. Don’t be put off of also creating an A List and a B List which you can then refer back to when RSVPs start coming in. 1. I f neither of you has spoken to or met them or heard their name before, don’t invite them. 2. If neither of you has spoken to them in three years, don’t invite them. 3. If there’s anyone who’s on the list because you feel guilty about leaving them off, don’t invite them. CONSIDER AN ‘ADULTS ONLY’ WEDDING Deciding whether to invite children will probably come down to a pure budgetary or venue space decision. If the money isn’t there, you may want to go with an adults-only event. A wedding can be a great reason to encourage guests to get a sitter, leave the kids at home, dress up and enjoy a day out with your spouse! This is a kind way to let people know that this isn’t a whole family affair, plus, it makes it a fun occasion for them! PICK A DESTINATION AWAY FROM YOUR HOMETOWN If you find that you are still struggling to manage your guest list and have a certain number to stay below, consider choosing a venue that requires a little more effort to get to. Picking a venue an hour or two out of the way, guests are required to put a little more effort into attending. People who truly want to be there will make the effort.

INSURING AGAINST THE UNEXPECTE WHY SHOULD I INSURE MY WEDDING? Though you might not want to think about it, disasters can strike your wedding day. From a sudden cancellation to stolen gifts to a damaged gown, wedding insurance can help protect you against the unforeseen, and can also afford you great peace of mind. But what exactly is wedding insurance, and how does it work? WHEN SHOULD YOU GET WEDDING INSURANCE? The sooner you buy your wedding insurance the sooner you’re covered, should something go wrong and you need to cancel, postpone or get a refund for one element of the wedding. This means you’d be covered should the venue be destroyed in a fire a year before your wedding date, or if a serious illness set in for a family member six months before the ceremony. WHAT DOES STAND-ALONE WEDDING INSURANCE COVER? All policies are different, but typically they cover the cancellation or rearrangement of a wedding or reception due to accident, illness or bereavement within the main wedding party, or if a supplier goes out of business. Most policies also cover loss or damage to the main wedding outfits; presents, rings; the cake and flowers; as well as the price of having to retake photographs and video; failure of wedding cars; and personal liability and legal expenses. The amount you can claim if things go wrong depends on the level of cover you purchased.
THE SMALL PRINT - WHAT WON’T IT COVER: -C old feet -C ancellation due to financial difficulties, other than redundancy -C ancellation if only a small part of the day goes wrong -P re-existing medical conditions that cause cancellation You can add other items to your policy such as: - I f bad weather ruins the experience i.e. for outdoor weddings -M arquee cover - Public liability for accidents your guests may have Always remember to check the small print! WAYS TO HAVE A SUSTAINABLE WEDDING DRESS Over the past few years, sustainability has increasingly become a significant issue in the fashion world, with the mass production of fast-fashion and the large sum of new garments burnt by leading designer brands adding to the deterioration of our environment. While the wedding dress industry doesn’t do as much damage to the environment as retail brands do, the waste of material for such high costs and little wear does still have an effect. Because of these ongoing issues that have been brought to the forefront of fashion news in the past few years, sustainability has become one of the newest trends in fashion. In order to support this new era of sustainable and eco-friendly clothing, here are five non-traditional ways in which you can help the environment when it comes to finding your wedding gown:
1
BUY VINTAGE OR PRE-LOVED Buying a vintage or pre-loved wedding dress is not only something which is now quite fashionable, but it is also more affordable and environmentally friendly than buying a brand-new dress. The perks of going pre-loved also include the variety of styles that you can choose from, whether you want a sleek and glamorous 1930s look or a more relaxed, boho-chic 1970s style. The cost of a vintage wedding dress will vary on the quality; however, they are more likely to be in the £100s instead of £1000s, and by reclaiming an old dress you are being sustainable in your purchase. Places to buy a vintage wedding dress can be at your local pre-loved bridal shop, vintage or charity store, or websites such as Etsy. Where can I buy? Bridal Reloved bridalreloved.co.uk
2
BUY A DRESS YOU CAN WEAR MORE THAN ONCE Although you may want a dress that is special specifically for your wedding day, it could be an idea to buy a dress you can wear for other occasions that isn’t just your wedding. By purchasing a dress that is either a different colour or altering it later, either by dyeing it or having it tailored, you would be able to have multiple uses from one dress. Where can I buy? Charlotte Balbier available from Natalya James Bridal natalyajames.com
3
SHOP WITH ECO-FRIENDLY COMPANIES There are plenty of smaller companies that produce wedding dresses in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way than the mass producing, big designer brands. Whether they use recycled material or make to order, they are one step towards creating a better environment, while creating beautiful dresses. By just searching the internet for eco-friendly wedding dresses, you’ll have a sufficient amount of businesses coming up, or you could look on the aforementioned website Etsy, who support small, creative businesses. Where can I buy? Eco bespoke couture dresses from Julie Dutton Bespoke Bridal juliedutton.co.uk

WEAR A FAMILY HEIRLOOM This may already be a tradition in your family or could be the start of a new one. Wearing a dress of one of your family members, probably your mother’s or grandmother’s, can be a really nice way to be sentimental on your wedding day, fulfilling the ‘something borrowed and something old’ criteria as well. If you are not into a vintage or retro style, you could alter their dress into something new, meaning that you still have the sentimental value while having a new dress. Where can I buy? Alterations from Stunning Bridal stunningbridal.co.uk
5
KEEP THE CYCLE GOING Your wedding dress is an item which carries a lot of sentimental value is indisputable. However, after having kept your dress for many years, it may be a good idea to donate your dress to one of the aforementioned causes, such as a vintage wedding dress store or to a family member to carry on traditions. Even if you do end up going down the normal route of buying a designer dress from a bridal store (which I have nothing against), you will still be able to achieve sustainability with your wedding dress if you follow this last step. Where can I buy? Clean and box up your dress at Wedding Dress Cleaning Specialist wedding-dress-cleaning.co.uk

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY FOR
DRESS SHOPPING!
W I T H
When buying your wedding dress, it is best to allow yourself enough time for each and every step, so you do not feel pressured or rushed into choosing your dress. There are lots of bridal shops and boutiques in Northamptonshire to choose from, all offering different price ranges of dresses and levels of service. It is a good idea to start looking for your wedding dress 12-18 months before your wedding date, all depending on how decisive you are. If you are a fairly decisive bride, 12 months gives you a perfect amount of time to have a relaxing time dress shopping, enjoying yourself with family and friends, and to find your dream dress! However, if you are more indecisive, allow yourself 12-18 months before your wedding date. This gives you time to try more dresses on, looking at different styles and shapes and figuring out what suits you best. Most bridal shops take at least 3-4 months (in some cases longer) to receive your dress in store after you have placed your order. In order for everything to run smoothly, it’s a good idea to allow a minimum of 6 months for your dress to come in and for any alterations to be done.
If you are buying a dress from stock you will not need this much time, but again don’t let this make you feel as though you have all the time in the world; you still need to find the perfect gown! You should still allow 6-8 weeks for alterations. May to September is the busiest time for weddings, so if you are finding your seamstress privately (not through your bridal boutique), booking your alterations in advance is well advised, especially to take the pressure off so you can enjoy the experience. The last thing you need is to find they are fully booked, causing you extra stress not knowing how you will get your alterations done in time. Collecting your dress will depend on who is doing the alterations for you. If you are doing this through your bridal boutique then they may be able to keep your dress, stored safely, until nearer the time of your wedding. Otherwise, you may be required to collect your dress and take it to your alteration’s appointments; if this is the case your seamstress might hold the dress for you. This could depend on how close to the wedding your seamstress can do your alterations. Make sure you leave time for alterations. silverlinings.co.uk

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Real weddings I woke up to all my bridesmaids and parents making me a continental breakfast with bubbly. My parents gave me a wedding present of my mum’s wedding jewellery (this was my something old). We then headed off to Holdenby House for an 8am to get ready together. When we arrived at Holdenby we were all VERY excited and could not wait to start getting ready.
Ben Cotterill, our photographer, saw this as a great opportunity to take some lovely pictures of us all. He really didn’t miss a moment throughout the day! The morning went so quickly, before we knew it was time for the bridesmaids to head off to the church. This is when it all started to feel very real! After the girls left I went downstairs to be greeted my Dad who shed a tear to see me in my wedding dress and gave me the biggest hug.
We went straight upstairs to the ‘blue room’, where we found a breakfast basket and a lovely bottle of prosecco. The make-up artist and hair stylist were very prompt, already at house on our arrival and were as excited as we were! The bridesmaids got their hair done, whilst I got my make-up done. It was lovely to see Emma Remington who personally came to deliver our beautiful flowers to our room whilst we were getting ready.
Dad and I arrived at Pitsford Church fashionably late. I will never forget my Dad walking me down the aisle and waving at our friends and family as we passed… I was so happy I welled up when I saw Ashley! The Groomsmen looked very handsome in the suits Ashley had chosen from Debenhams. After the ceremony and some group photos we were pleasantly surprised as a friend had brought along our dog, Finn, to see us, which made the day even more special. The photo Ben snapped of the three of us takes pride of place on our fireplace.

Real weddings
The wedding car we had chosen for our big day was a stunning 1935 Rolls Royce Landaulette, from Bridal Carriages of Northamptonshire; when we looked around their showroom, all of the cars looked amazing but this really stood out to us both! The owner, John, was extremely helpful and arranged for multiple trips to transport the Bridesmaids as well, the driver also greeted us out of the church with a bottle of Champagne. One of Ashley’s best men also arranged for a friend who owns a restored vintage Volkswagen Camper, to take the 3 of them to the Church. As we arrived at Holdenby House everyone was there to welcome us; it was lovely to see that all our guests were enjoying ice creams provided by Honey Bees vintage ice-cream bicycle, who we met at a wedding fair at Holdenby House. After our arrival and walking the grounds with Ben to get some more pictures we were soon sat down in the ballroom for our wedding breakfast. During the wedding breakfast we had booked a local string quartet to play throughout which turned out to be a lovely touch and something all of our friends and family have commented on. We had chosen macarons from Maison Des Macarons for our favors, which were very popular! We then had our three-course meal and listened to speeches from the father of the bride, the groom, the bride and the two best men. There were tears and lots of laughter. After the speeches, we all went outside for where the falconry display began and everyone got the chance to both hold and feed the birds. 46
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
After the food, the falconry display began where the guests got the chance to both hold and feed the birds. Then we cut our cake, which tasted amazing! We tried to please all of our guests by ensuring each layer was a different flavor. Moving into the evening the disco then began ran by Big Bopper and the bar provided by Liquid Bars seemed to get more and more busy! Ashley and I had our first dance to Perfect by Ed Sheeran. It was great; even though we couldn’t do the dance steps we had been practicing as my dress was too big… Then we had the father and daughter dance. We decided to practice a slightly ‘different’ father and daughter dance which was choreographed by Ashley, my dad and me. Lots of our guests were very surprised to see us dancing to ‘shake it off’ by Taylor Swift and then ‘Apache’ by the Sugerhill Gang. The evening went very quickly, possibly even too quickly, there was lots of dancing, drinking and fun with those close to us.
Real weddings COLOUR SCHEME The colour scheme was dusky pink, as it is my favourite colour. We thought it would look great to have a colour scheme throughout, Ashley had picked some lovely dusky pink ties and pocket squares for his groomsmen. To complement the colour scheme the flowers, table decorations, bridesmaid’s dresses and jewellery were all dusky pink too. THE VENUE We had chosen Holdenby House because we had always spoke about having our wedding in a
traditional manor house and as soon as we walked through the front door it felt like the perfect place for our venue. We really liked the fact that our guests could access most of downstairs, so there was always space to either dance in the ballroom or go and find somewhere quiet to socialize. We also had our own room to steal some time for the two of us. The unique factor that attracted us to Holdenby was the beautiful gardens and the falconry display which are guests still talk about when we see them.
Emily: Exchanging our vows, listening to my Dad’s and Ashley’s speech which made me cry of happiness and laughter, taking part in a ‘different’ father and daughter dance which was choreographed by me, Ashley and Dad!
Ashley: seeing Emily walk down the aisle to our favourite song (Christina Perri ‘A Thousand Years’) and taking my hand at the altar.

PLANNING FOR A
WEDDING
50
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Planning
There really is nothing we can do about the weather...including the rain! Rain on your wedding day is very possible in the UK, no matter the time of year. In fact, August is the wettest month of the year, even though it’s the most popular month to get married! There are some simple ways to make the best of it and ensure the weather won’t ruin your day. UMBRELLAS AND BLANKETS Make sure you have lots of umbrellas for guests, and an extra pretty one for you. With the rain usually comes the cold, so have blankets around for guests to throw over their shoulders or wrap over cold legs. Brollies Galore (brolliesgalore.co.uk) have a huge selection of umbrellas to buy or hire, while Ikea has fantastic cheap fleece blankets which can be popped in a basket. CATERING Be open to changing your catering and drinks reception plans. Rather than serving summery fizz on arrival, serve a warm apple cider or a sloe gin instead. Given enough notice, most caterers will be able to change the menu from a luxury BBQ to a warming plated menu. If you’d planned on an al fresco drinks reception, then putting up a funky capri tent to protect from a shower or two will keep you and your guests outside. BRIDAL WEAR Embrace the wellie boots! Have a pair of bridal white wellie boots from Funky Wellington Boots (funky-wellington-boots.co.uk) or add some colour to your dress with a pair of bright pink ones or even rainbow coloured! If you’re worried about the dash from the car to your venue, then Rainaway Bride (weddingdressraincover.com) has a white, waterproof hooded cloak (to protect your hair, veil and make-up too) that fits most gowns and trains, and the elasticated hem scoops up the dress away from puddles and mud. Don’t forget your waterproof mascara! PHOTOGRAPHS Most photographers will agree that a rainy day can give some stunning, dramatic photographs. The clouds in the sky soften the light which gives better photographs than the harsh light from a clear blue sky. Have a chat with your photographer and work out the wet weather plan for group shots and the more romantic ones of just the two of you. Remember to have fun - some of my favourite photos of couples are when they’ve been dancin’ in the rain!

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS Once the I-dos are over you will have a beautiful bouquet and perhaps smaller posies that will need a home. Think about using these on your cake table to frame your cake. It will make a lovely display and give your guests the opportunity to not Tiny cake tables in corners with wonky white table only enjoy your cake but your clothes are a thing of the past... let’s face it this is the gorgeous wedding flowers too! I most expensive cake purchase you are ever likely to loved bringing some of the fresh make, so let’s show it off and really make it a special flowers from the brides bouquet centerpiece at your reception! into this cake design to really bring this display together. 54
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Cakes NOT JUST ONE CAKE Why have one wedding cake when you could have a whole dessert table! Dessert tables are a super fun option for couples who want to offer their guests a selection of tasty treats, perhaps as part of their dessert option! You can still have a main focal cake for that all-important cake cutting shot alongside other cakes and treats in colours and designs to match! I loved creating this cake table with its focal hand painted cake and smaller rustic iced cakes with hand crafted butterflies and fresh flowers. There were also hand painted cookie pops to match the cake and French macarons in complementary colours!
MORE THAN A TABLE Have some fun displaying your wedding cake by using an interesting piece of furniture! You might have something suitable at home already or you might find something in a local charity shop that you could upcycle and then keep as a memory of your big day! There are also lots of unique hire companies out there with lots of fab pieces of furniture just waiting for their big moment! I love the way that the tables used to display both of my cakes below really match the cakes personality!

SOMETHING PERSONAL There are sadly often people who can’t be with us on our big day or memories of other family weddings that you would like to share with your guests. I loved how this couple really made the most of celebrating their family as part of their cake table display with framed photos all in black and white to complement their burgundy and grey cake. © Liberty Pearl Photography
AND FOR THE BRAVE... Are you having an open air wedding? Nobody says you have to keep your wedding cake inside! Best check the weather first for this one though! (Seriously - cakes outdoors in the sun are not the best idea but it does look super gorgeous!!) I always enjoy seeing how couples style their cake table! If you are not sure what to do always ask your cake maker -we will have lots of ideas for you and can help you choose something that fits you and your cake perfectly!

VENUE At our first meeting it was clear how organised they were and they knew exactly what they were doing. The venue is stunning and we liked that the venue was only used for weddings so we had the whole place to ourselves. They did not disappoint; the day went like a dream and just flowed.
DRESS I had already picked two dresses for the day. One made for me by Nicola Anne and another by Rachel Allan–Mary’s for the evening. Just before the wedding I fell in love with a new Watters dress we had delivered so my dress plans went out the window and I ended up wearing 3 dresses!
CELEBRANT We decided to have a Humanist Celebrant because we wanted Stephen Church to do the Ceremony for us. Stephen is hilarious and an amazing speaker. We didn’t want a boring service, we wanted something fun and well presented. Stephen took time to get information about us and personalised service to us.
BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES I had originally wanted mauve, however went for navy as I thought the colour would suit everyone better. It’s my one regret of the day; I wish I had gone with the mauve! People think planning a wedding when you work in the industry is great but its not; you have too much choice so end up keep changing your mind which is what happened!
PHOTOGRAPHY We met with a couple of photographers but Dan won us over. Dan jus made us feel so at ease and we really got on well with Dan, plus his photographs were fantastic. Dan also provide us with a Comedy Photo booth which worked really well for the evening. FLOWERS We just clicked with Selina and she was the only person who came with flowers and different items so I could see exactly what it would look like; Selina knew I had a fixed idea in my head.
VENUE DÉCOR Wildflower Styling provided me with lanterns and some geometric items for the day and Little Details Company provided me with the charger plates, table centerpieces and lanterns. I only met Wildflower Styling just before the wedding and she was so accommodating as I was missing some key pieces!
Nothing was too much trouble and she delivered everything to me. silverlinings.co.uk

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Real weddings
We decided our theme was rustic straight away. Both loving nature, we wanted it to feature highly in our decorations. Green and purple were our colours and, with our love of gin, we decided this could be included as our centerpieces for each table! Our wedding favours were seed pods as we wanted to spread a bit of nature to our guests too. The aim for our wedding was to upcycle as much as possible, using jars and gin bottles as centerpieces. We got logs from our local woodland trust for our centerpieces too and collected over 80 pine cones for our place names! We decided to get married at the Reid Rooms because it felt like the full package. It was rustic and most of the rooms were already perfectly decorated so we only needed a few finishing touches!
We loved the courtyard and the outside areas. We knew it would fit us perfectly as it is set on a working farm!
Our photographers, Gez and Victoria, were recommended to us by Julia’s friend. What we loved about them was their creativity and ability to think outside of the box! They put us at ease straight away and were able to get photos organically as well as stepping in to direct us for a winning shot. Gez and Victoria were really able to capture our day perfectly and wowed us with the quality of their images.
My dress was “Raula” by La Sposa. It was the A-line fit that I had always dreamed of but with a class that made me feel elegant on the day. I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect dress if I had tried! I truly felt like a Disney princess!

We used Vistaprint for all of our wedding stationary. It was so easy and with so many different styles and templates, we were able to find the perfect stationary that fit with our theme. The quality of the prints were perfect and we were really pleased with the finished article. We enlisted the help of our friend Wing Lau to put the finishing touches to our wedding stationary – she used her beautiful handwriting skills to write out all of our guests’ names!
I was never someone who thought about their ‘dream wedding dress’ but as the wedding planning got underway, I realised I wanted to wear something a bit ‘bohemian’ to reflect my style but also traditional. I was lucky to find a beautiful “Olivine” dress by Diane Harbridge. I loved the lace and the way it flowed, I felt amazing wearing it on the big day.
We hired our own PA system as we felt we didn’t need a DJ. It was important to us that we could be in charge of our own music and so we created a playlist that suited our own music taste as well as our guests. It’s fair to say we partied the night away! We definitely recommend having a photo booth as the guests loved it - especially the children! - and we had lots of fun looking at the photos in the guest book! Being a same sex wedding we wanted to push the boundaries of ‘ordinary’ and so whilst we both had two bridesmaids each we also decided to have a best man each! Adam, Julia’s brother, was her best man whilst Sarah chose her 8 year old nephew, Joshua. Joshua stood up and delivered the most exceptional best man’s speech to a room of 80 people. He reduced the room to tears, ending his speech on the memorable line
“ People at school have said that two girls cannot get married but I have said my aunties are. You two have shown me that if you love someone you love them no matter what. Love is love and that is why we are here today.” It is safe to say that speech will be a lasting memory for us. 70

The whole ceremony process. It was a joyous emotional rollercoaster and nothing could have prepared me for how overwhelming it was – seeing all our loved ones there, friends and family, sharing our special day – it was something I’ll never forget.
Our first dance as wife and wife was a beautiful moment which I will never forget. As well as the best man speech from my 8 year old nephew!

PENDENNIS CASTLE english-heritage.org.uk/pendennisweddings Set on the Falmouth headland with breathtaking views out to sea, Pendennis Castle is one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal fortresses. The picturesque castle wedding venue has defended Cornwall since Tudor times and played a vital role during both World Wars.
POLHAWN FORT polhawnfort.com A real Napoleonic fort, complete with cannon, drawbridge and walls eight feet thick, it’s the real deal. Granite staircases spiral towards huge vaulted ceilings and rows of windows face out to sea. Steeped in history, it was built to discourage Napoleon III from even thinking of invading us.
MV CONSTANCE constancecruises.com This beautifully restored Victorian launch offers small intimate wedding receptions while quietly sailing along the Helford Passage, an area rich in romantic history having been the location for Daphne Du Maurier books and more recently provided scenes for the BBC drama Poldark. With first class catering also available on board, Constance is perfect for an ‘elopement’ wedding.

Like most things these days, when it comes to planning a big event in life, we turn to the internet and, more recently, social media for ideas and inspiration. Sites such as Instagram and Pinterest are a planner’s paradise when it comes to viewing gorgeous, vibrant images of the perfect house, garden, wedding and holiday. It is no different for honeymoons.

“ It is becoming increasingly common for people to say to me that they saw some photos on Instagram or Facebook of a place and it has made them want to go,” reveals Rob. “I guess in some ways, social media acts in the same way as a travel brochure. They get to see the places and get honest reviews from people they know or follow at the same time. I’ve been reliably informed that some people purposefully pick their holiday destinations because they will make the perfect backdrop for selfies!” silverlinings.co.uk

Massages in the Maldives: The Maldives are the picture of paradise. This island was made for romance and a couple’s massage really ups the romance factor. 5. Romance in Rome: If you are looking for a romantic honeymoon, Rome has plenty of beautiful romantic lanes, restaurants and parks. Rome’s public rose garden is also worth a visit as you can dine, drink, and wander through the roses, enjoying views and food tastings.

6. F alls in Fiji: The islands of Fiji are famous for some of the most stunning waterfalls in the entire world. All of the waterfalls have beautiful natural swimming pools for you to enjoy, and if you can make it to the top of the waterfall, be sure to take a snorkel so you can view beneath the clear waters!
3. Bungalow in Bora Bora: Bora Bora is known as one of the most romantic islands in the world, if not THE most romantic. Why not stay in one of the luxurious over-water bungalows that Bora Bora is so famous for? 4. S unset on safari: In Kenya you will see the big animals of Africa and witness some of the most beautiful sunsets on the planet. Be sure to treat yourself to an evening hot air balloon ride where you can watch the sunset on the horizon.
