The event is held with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering The auction begins at 11 a.m. PST; the automobilia sale precedes this at 9 a.m. The cars may be previewed at Quail Lodge on August 17 and 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday sale day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Capable of making 120 mph in a time when less than half that was the ceiling for most cars, the headliner Atalante has rare aluminum coachwork. “Speed, style, exclusivity, originality and provenance: This particular jewel has it all,” says Jakob Greisen, vice president of US Motoring for Bonhams. “If the Type 57 was the supercar of its day, the 57C was the hypercar.”
The last 1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT built leads the three Prancing Horses, all matching numbers and Ferrari Classiche certified. Exhibited at the 1956 Brussels Motor Show, the car received a factory-correct restoration in the late 2000s by marque specialists Patrick Ottis and Brian Hoyt. A 1949 Ferrari 166 Inter represents the young firm’s first international sales success. The restored Cabriolet is one of only three bespoke and hand-built examples produced at Maranello, with coachwork by Stabilimenti Farina.

Bonhams Celebrates Silver Anniversary Quail Auction
From two years later, a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter Alloy Coupé, completes the triumvirate. It is one of a half-dozen exclusive examples hand-built in aluminum by Carrozzeria Ghia. The 212 has also had a factory-correct restoration recently performed by Ferrari specialists. With coachwork by Le Baron, the blue slate gray Stutz was in Argentina for more than four decades, and, after returning to the United States, the car has been owned by two notable collectors, winning multiple Best of Shows following a concours-quality restoration. “Designed to visually lower its lines with a striking ‘coach sill,’ this American classic features an exceptionally long hoodline — the longest of any known Stutz,” Greisen says. “Its proportions are remarkable; no wonder it’s a showstopper.”

Ten marques are judged at the Concorso: Alfa Romeo, DeTomaso, Ferrari, Fiat/Abarth, Lancia, Iso/Bizzarrini, Lamborghini, Maserati, Motorcycles & Special Coachworks (Italian-designed vehicles). Other classics regularly shown include Apollo, Bandini, Bertone, Cisitalia, Ghia, Moreti, Pagani, Ducati and Moto Guzzi. With Ferrari, Bizzarini and the Alfa Romeo are also being honored at the event.
The Al Fresco Lunch, also in addition to the admission price, is 11 a.m.– 1:30 p.m. at $105 per person. A food court with gourmet food trucks is also available.
First, second and third awards will be given in each cate gory, with first-place winners eligible for Best of Show. Last year’s top winner was a 1965 Maserati Mistral Spider. The FCA-PR Vintage Ferrari Concours (VFC) judging will be led by Ryan Pimentel, the FCA-PR director of concours, with a team of judges. The VFC judging is open to all pre-2012 Ferraris and will be judged using the International Advisory Council for the Preservation of the Ferrari Automobile (IAC/PFA) Guidelines. In turn, The Lamborghini Club does its judging. Special awards will include Best Finish Award by Meguiar’s and the Valentino Balboni Award for Mr. Balboni’s favorite Lamborghini.

Seventy years ago, a successful young race car driver premiered the first of many landmark automobiles in his name, and this year’s 37th Concorso Italiano honors the continuing legacy of Enzo Ferrari. The Concorso Italiano –– the world’s largest celebration of Italian car design and performance –– takes place on Saturday, August 20, 9:30–3 p.m. at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course, a Troon property, in Seaside, California, near Monterey Bay. About 4,000 attendees and 800–1000 classic cars are expected.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Celebrates Le Mans 17–20
On Sunday, the Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day debuts, with as many as 60 cars racing up the Corkscrew in timed stages, says Barry Toepke, director of Heritage Events and public relations at the great venue. Several presentations and interviews will take place on stage. And, the Picnic in the Paddock on Saturday at noon will feature the event’s grand marshal and nine-time over all Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen; four-time Le Mans champion Henri Pescarolo; and Cobra legend Peter Brock. Laguna Seca was built in 1957 on U.S. Army Fort Ord land and held its first races that year from November 9 through the 11. Today’s event originated as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in 1974. In 2010, when SCRAMP purchased the event from General Racing, it was renamed the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Toepke explains, noting that, except for the pandemic-closed 2020 event, historic racing has been held here every August.
The 64th Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, joins the worldwide start of the 100th-anniversary celebration for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, August 17–20. Every year, approximately 70,000 fans of historic racing visit the historic circuit where more than 500 periodcorrect car cars compete and are displayed. New this year, the Laguna Seca races will continue Wednesday through Saturday. Participants will race in 14 groups including 1923–1955 Le Mans, 1956–1971 Le Mans, 1972–1982 Le Mans, 1981–2005 Le Mans Prototypes & GT1, and an exhibition of Pre-1920 Ragtime Racers is scheduled.
“The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion celebrates race cars in a manner that they were built to do, and that’s race,” Toepke says. “No other event captures the beauty, speed and friendliness of the Rolex Reunion. Plus, it’s one of the more affordable events of Monterey Car Week, which makes it the largest attended of all the events.”

These include The Spirit of Monterey for the driver or entrant who excels in the spirit of the weekend; the Ken Miles Trophy, for a vintage car under 1500cc; the Rolex Award for Excellence in each category; the Gary Byrd Foundation award for a pre-war car; and the Henry Ford Trophy for the best of that marque.

The event will be held concurrently with the 25th Bonhams Monterey Auction, August 19, on the western grounds of the lodge. The preview days for the auction are August 17 and 18. Sponsored by the world’s leading luxury vendors, the event is not limited to classic automobiles. Five international culinary, fine wine and specialty cocktail pavilions, for example, will be available to ticket holders. Vehicles will be judged in seven classes: Pre-War Sports and Racing Cars; Post-War Sports Cars 1945-1960; PostWar Sports Cars 1961-1975; Post-War Racing Cars; The Evolution of the Supercar; The Great Ferraris; Custom Coachwork; and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and Best of Show is selected by all entrants participating in the event. RMHCV provides a “home away from home” for families while their child is being treated in a local hospital, explains David Ashjian, Director of Promotions for RMHCV. The house has 18 guest rooms. Each room is similar to a hotel room, with two queen-size beds, restroom/ shower and satellite TV. Guests share common areas such as kitchens, laundry rooms, playrooms and the living room. Meals are often provided by local businesses, church groups, schools, clubs and other community organizations, he adds. “On days when meals aren’t provided, there are fully stocked pantries that our guest families have access to,” Ashjian says. He notes that families pay nothing to stay; some stay for just a few days, while others stay for weeks or even months, depending on the severity of their child’s illness or injury.

The nine cars are, chronologically: a circa-1930 Studebaker open wheel race car; a 1934 Ford Victoria; the 1952 Jowett Jupiters, red and green; a drag-racing 1963 Plymouth 426, similar to the one he bought new in 1963; 1956 Buick Roadmaster Convertible; 1953 Studebaker Commander; 1959 Willy’s Jeep/4x4 Wagon; and a 2003 Mercedes SLK32 AMG roadster. His cycles, mostly older, include a vintage Simplex Auto Motorbike with only 20 miles and a Matchless cycle he once rode on a 100-mile-plus daily commute.
Jim Watts has two ’52 Jowett Jupiters, one with a history out of this world.
He was born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1942. “My older brother and I ran a speed shop back in the early ’60s,” he recalls. “We raced two top fuel cars and a super stock Plymouth at that time. We also built drag-race cars and did a lot of Corvette work, especially for the college kids in town.”
He and his wife Pam steward a collection of nine cars and eight motorcycles in San Clemente, California, just north of San Diego. They own a whale watching and fishing expedition business in nearby Newport Beach. Their two-acre cul-de-sac home has a driveway that circles back to the 1,700-square-foot garage in the rear and a work shop.
In 1988 he bought a 1930 front-drive Ruxton from his brother’s estate. “It was at that time, because I had all this room on the property, my collection began,” he says. “It’s not for public view, but we have friends that like to come over for happy hours and hang out in the shop.”

•1934 Ford Victoria –– “This was my first car. I paid $100 for it in 1961. It was my daily driver for several years. I drag raced it on weekends in Modified Sportsman Class and later moved up to C Gas class on the weekends. “I was living in Peoria, Illinois, at this time. In 1965 I moved to California; I sold the car for $650. Years later, I tried to find the car. When I did, it took 28 years before I bought it back for $20,000. My wife and I have driven the car on four Americruises. We’ve been to Canada, Denver and many other trips. She is still my favorite car.”
•1952 Jowett Jupiters, red and green –– “I bought my first Jowett Jupiter, in red, at a Mecum auction about six years ago. I had been looking for a Jupiter because my father and oldest brother both owned Jowett Jupiters. “These are unique cars. They have chromaloy tube frames, four-wheel torsion bar suspension, a water-cooled 4-cylin der Boxer engine, 4-speed trans and a hand-pounded aluminum body. “They have a rich racing history, too, having won LeMans in 1950, ’51 and ’52 in the 1500 CC class, plus many other “Iraces.found the green one for sale in Canada in 2021 during the pandemic; it’s the newest car added to my collection. After lots of paperwork and expense, I finally got the car out of Canada. When I tried to register it, I ended up at the California Highway Department trying to get it okayed. “After they ran a history, we found out that the car I just bought had belonged to my deceased older brother 46 years ago. He had a collection of about 50 cars. In 1975 he and his wife were killed by a drunk driver, so naturally this car has a very special meaning to me.”

I also own a 1955 Matchless G80 competition Scrambler that I rode in the desert and to downtown L.A. to work for several years. About 10 years ago, I spent six years restoring it.”

•1963 drag-racing Plymouth 426 Max Wedge –– “My wife gave me this car for my 60th birthday.” From 1962 to 1964, Chrysler offered the muscle car power plant in the B Platform Dodges and Plymouths.
•1956 Buick Roadmaster Convertible –– When I bought this, it was in horrible condition. It really wasn’t worth restoring in terms of the market value, but then they are hard to find and I wanted one, so I spent many years restoring it.”
•1959 Willy’s Jeep/4x4 wagon –– “In 1969 I bought a 1955 Willy’s 4x4 wagon that I used for hauling motorcycles to ride in the desert. I even drove the Willy’s the length of Baja California before the road was paved. My wife saw pictures of the Willy’s and liked it, so she found one and bought it.”

Many people admire and collect art, but very few families truly love and appreciate art in every form, one of these select families is the Koss family. “Being able to transfer that vision onto a luxury supercar for all the world to see is a masterpiece in motion,” notes Koss, an avid car lover. This June, while the galleries went quiet and saw guests sneak in to get out of the Arizona heat, rubberneckers could spot father and son racing through the Scottsdale streets in the GoldRush Rally, a cross-country journey by land and air featuring luxury and exotic cars. American Fine Art, Inc. was proud to host the first stop featuring about 100 cars from all over the world lined up on Main Street, including a 765 LT McLaren, AMG GTR Mercedes, Huracan STO Lamborghini, 812 Superfast Ferraris, Rolls-Royce Cullinans, Jaguars, Paganis, Audis R8s, and of course, a Bentley.
“The rally was truly exhilarating! Driving in a pack of supercars in an elite rally across the country is an unforgettable experience, each city is so unique. The journey is what I love most, spending an incredible time with my son creating oncein-a-lifetime stories on the road,” explains Koss.
At this year’s Goldrush rally stop in Scottsdale, among the selection of Audi’s, was a particular R8 V10 Plus model, covered in Pablo Picasso and his different periods and styles. The first side was wrapped in Picasso’s synthetic cubism, the trunk has a Bullfight, Dora Maar from the “Weeping Women” period on its roof and La Cranach along with his other lovers on the other side, with the entire front hood as the Bacchanalian feast by Picasso.

If you were on the lookout for another one of the masterpiece wrapped supercars, you might have spotted a certain Bentley Continental GT Breitling Jet Team edition featuring the works of Arizona’s own AtZ, a local urban artist with a meteoric rise to success, exclusively represented by American Fine Art, Inc. He believes in creating works that are as visually pleasing as they are philosophically and soulfully contemplative. The car is fresh from the Gumball 3000 Rally, an international tour much like GoldRush Rally, the route spans from Toronto to Miami. This year, between 100 and 150 supercars made the 3,000-mile trek from Toronto, Canada to Miami, Florida in seven days. The rally hosts public and private events in each city it passes through along the route. The annual rally supports a variety of causes through the Gumball 3000 Foundation, including The Skatepark Project (formerly The Tony Hawk Foundation) and Laureus Sport for Good, supporting underprivileged youth around the world with community youth development programs. Other than providing a unique experience the purpose of the rally is to raise money for the Gumball Foundation, which has raised more than $4 Million for underprivileged youth.

Starting at the steps of the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, the rally was wished luck from crowds of thousands of Canadians lucky enough to see this party on wheels which included the likes of David Hasselhoff, deadmau5, BunB, Ken Griffey Jr, Shmee1500, Daily Driven Exotics, & JWW. First stop was for lunch in Detroit at the Movement Music Festival which was a full day’s drive, after a much-needed meal and some music it was off to Indianapolis where the next morning was the world-famous Indy 500. The tour headed for Music City, Nashville, Tennessee where progressive R&B icon and “Crazy” singer CeeLo Green performed while a fundraising event took place at the National Museum of African American Music. The latter included a charity auction of pop culture and sporting memorabilia virtually attended by skateboarder Tony Hawk. Over the next few days of driving, participants went from Nashville heading south to Bardstown, Kentucky; Talladega, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia, and Miami Florida, creating a festival of cars and music in each city. The final stage of the rally incorporated a scenic drive to Key West before returning north to cross the finish line at David Beckham’s Inter Miami DRV PNK Stadium. Every leg of the journey had a “Gumball Story” for the books made. Once the Gumball 3000 rally was done there was no rest for this rally duo, the AtZ wrapped Bentley was loaded up into a car transport on its way to Sin City for the start of the GoldRush rally where it would meet up with its other team rally car, the Picasso wrapped Audi R8. The goldRush Rally kicked off in Las Vegas, then stopping by Scottsdale before heading for the El Dorado Hotel in Santa Fe, NM. Everyone rallied to Denver next, as the tour headed for Music City. The Cars were loaded up and transported professionally as the participants flew to Nashville, TN. The second half of the rally started on the way to Atlanta, GA traveling to St. Petersburg, FL after crossing the Florida Georgia line. Finally, the last day

The Arizona Concours d’Elegance returns in January 2023, presenting the acclaimed show and competition of rare and special automobiles at a new Scottsdale venue. Previously held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, the Arizona Concours will take place on Sunday, January 22 at the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center, with about 100 vehicles presented on the grass between and adjacent to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The automobiles that appear in such high-end concours events are often referred to as “rolling artworks,” and fittingly, the Arizona Concours has forged a partnership with Scottsdale Arts, to present this special event. “We are excited about the idea of cars as works of art, and the automobiles on display at this event most certainly are!” said Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts, the organization responsible for multi-disciplinary artistic services in the city. “We will turn Civic Center into an outdoor museum for the day, so everyone can share in the magic, beauty and nostalgia these classic cars from bygone eras Concourselicit.”co-director Ed Winkler, a classic car enthusiast with his own diverse collection, noted that the connection with Scottsdale Arts seems like a natural fit.
The Concours will be the first event held at the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center, which Winkler noted is the ideal setting for an exhibition of rolling art.
“The expanded format will allow a greater exposure to the public and collector car owners, as well as sponsors,” he said. The entries will be organized into about 15 classes, most of which will compete for class and special awards, as well as the coveted Best of Show. The juried Concours will bring professional automotive judges from the United States, Canada and Europe to evaluate and score the entries.
“Our focus as an arts organization is to reimagine our services and reinvent ourselves from time to time,” Wuestemann said. “In a city like ours, which has perhaps one of the most passionate car scenes in the world, what could be a better fit than to include this rolling artwork into our offerings?”
The Arizona Concours is currently welcoming select automobiles to be considered for the event. Temperatures in the Arizona desert might be rising, but that’s not keeping auto fanatics off the track at APEX Motor Club, the Maricopa-based sports track. Known for its luxurious auto garages and professional tracks to cruise around on, APEX is the premier destination for those with a touch of— or a lot of—motomania. But stopping at customized car garages and world-class tracks wasn’t in the plans for the minds behind APEX as its newly announced updates are sure to draw a crowd. Opened in 2019, APEX has elevated track driving in Arizona, attracting drivers from all over the United States and Canada as well to bring their project cars or much-loved autos and put them to the test. Now, the club will expand its offerings, opening the door to more interested parties looking to burn rubber, kickback, and share their wares with other likeminded drivers.
The first phase of the updates includes 48 private garages set to be delivered to its 262 members this fall and a permanent, 10,000+ square foot Member Clubhouse, which is set to begin construction in 2023, featuring a restaurant, viewing area of the tracks, outdoor swimming pool, gym, unique vehicle storage and more. Members are currently meeting with APEX’s in-house interior designer to customize their trackside garages to their individual, unique specifications. The ability for members to have 24/7 access to their private garages and vehicles—as well as having their favorite track cars stored trackside—is a game changer. With the help of an APEX staff member, car owners can prep a vehicle in their garage for track time. The permanent clubhouse and Phase Two tracks coming online shortly will allow even more track configurations for specialized racing cars.
While these updates are sure to bring in more interested drivers, APEX doesn’t plan on slowing down. Over the next five years, Stotler says, APEX will rev things up to have its motorsports enthusiast oasis completely built out, open 200+ days per year, and hosting multiple members-only race series with multiple classes and drivers from all backgrounds.
