The Performance package notches that performance
up to 440 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, good for 0–60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, Porsche says. The 7speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) with Auto Start Stop function is standard, as are 19-inch Macan Turbo wheels, with six-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers at front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. New this year, the Macan Sport Edition includes the PDK automatic transmission, Sport Chrono Package with Sport Plus functionality, Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), an electronic shocks control system that continuously adjusts force based on current road conditions and driving style. In addition, Macan Sport Edition has 20-in RS Spyder Design Wheels, four-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers at front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. Unusual for SUVs, the new model and the full Macan line-up feature mixed tires with different widths front and rear. And, the exhaust system includes Sport tailpipes. The music of Sedona is red rock spires, sculpted monuments and the towering junipers and riparian cottonwoods of Oak Creek Canyon. Surrounded by 1.8 million acres of Coconino National Forest, the world destination also draws people to Arizona for its spiritual vortexes, which, it’s said, harmonize self and world. Some 4.5 million people visit each year. Soon, a new kind of music will also play from this unique setting of natural beauty and personal discovery. When the Sedona Conservatory is built, a premier cultural center will celebrate the performing and fine arts, humanities and Native American cultures with the world. “The Sedona Conservatory will be set amid indescribable beauty, where the world’s finest master teachers and renowned performing and visual artists will inspire young, emerging and mid-career artists,” says Russell Fox, board president of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. “These living cultural treasures will guide, teach, challenge and nurture their students, instilling in them a passion for the highest artistic ideals of expressive technique in music, dance, drama and visual arts,” explains Fox, a Sedona resident and longtime conductor, educator and arts and culture advocate. “Artists of all genres need a place of retreat, time away from the norm, free from life’s standard pressures, a time and place to rediscover, to expand, to learn, to grow,” he says. “The Sedona Conservatory will be that place, and there will be no other place like it in the world.” All-EncompAssing cAmpus
The multi-acre campus will be built in or adjacent to Sedona on land that would be donated to the nonprofit arts organization for the conservatory. Fox’s group is seeking this gift of land and the construction costs from an arts benefactor, a foundation or similar organization. “All realized creativity, indeed, every significant accomplishment is a collaboration, a marriage of vision and resources, each relying on and enriching the other,” he says. “We are eagerly seeking to establish that vital relationship.” The campus will be designed by the internationally respected architectural designer Gerry Jones and Bing Hu, AIA. An Arizona resident, Jones taught extreme mountainous terrain architecture at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West for 16 years. Approximately 80 percent of the 328 luxury homes he’s built during the past 64 years are on these challenging sites. Hu is well known for his residential and commercial work in Arizona, including communities at Desert Mountain, Silverleaf and others in north Scottsdale. Components will include training and rehearsal studios and three performance venues, highlighted by the Festival Concert Hall, which will be home to the world’s largest concert hall pipe organ; housing for resident and guest artists and students; festival and picnic grounds; two parks; a sculpture garden; an events plaza; and aboveand below-ground parking. Also planned is a boutique hotel and conference center; a health and wellness retreat with a spa; luxury townhomes; a village of galleries, shops and cafes; even a working vineyard. Finally, the Sedona Center & Museum for Indigenous World Cultures will celebrate Arizona’s 21 native cultures, past and present, as well as the cultures of native peoples worldwide. “The center will stimulate intercultural awakening, enrichment, understanding and a sense of global community,” Fox says. a series of intense group and personalized educational experiences,” Fox explains, “students will be prepared for a lifetime of performance and creative options regardless of professional aspirations.” The Professional Division will provide emerging and midcareer artists in music, dance and drama a year-long series of one- to two-week residential master classes with master teachers and celebrated performing artists the caliber of Yo Yo Ma, Marilyn Horne and Judi Dench. This level of offerings will also include master visual and literary artists. Public performance and display opportunities will culminate the residencies. Finally, the Adult Enrichment Division will offer varied adult programs for nonprofessional avocational arts enthusiasts in all genres seeking greater understanding of an art form. From the boneshaking roar to the exquisitely heartbreaking quiet tones, there is no other instrument capable of a pipe organ’s extended tonal palette and expressive options. Remember, it was Mozart who first called the organ ‘The King of Instruments.’” Installed at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music’s Finney Chapel in 1955, the Aeolian-Skinner, Opus 230-A has been carefully transported from the Ohio college to Sedona, including pipes, the keyboard console and most of the wind chests. When Fox was a bachelor’s and master’s degrees student there, he played and performed on this great instrument many times. Even larger, the landmark Estey Organ Magnum Opus 2981 was completed in 1931 at the Bridges Auditorium, Pomona College, Claremont, California. “This instrument is especially significant in that several of the pipe sets came directly from the European and British organ-building masters responsible for the world’s finest cathedral and concert hall instruments,” explains Fox. Changes in Pomona College’s performing arts departments have transformed Bridges Auditorium mainly into a regional theatrical rental facility, leaving its famed concert instrument silent. Through the mediation of Harris, who is the organ’s curator, the college has graciously donated this monumental instrument to the Sedona Conservatory. It is scheduled to be disassembled and transported to Sedona during the summer of 2019. “We are thrilled that Weston will do all the work here in Arizona,” Fox says. “It will be the ‘crown jewel’ of the Conservatory –– only rivaled in majesty by Sedona’s internationally famous red rocks.”

Fox first came to Arizona from Oberlin Conservatory when he became director of the Music Department at Sedona’s independent college-prep Verde Valley School. “My wife and I were immediately smitten with Sedona’s incredible landscape and weather, but after two years we decided that our musical careers needed opportunities and challenges that the area was not yet able to provide,” he says. They moved to Los Angeles where his wife Virginia, an opera singer, pursued her career and he worked at Los Angeles Community College, UCLA, with several orchestras and choruses, and served for 23 years as conductor and music director for the Hollywood Bowl Easter Sunrise Service. The couple joyfully returned to Sedona in 2010. Since then he’s been board president of Northern League of Arizona Opera, a Chamber Music Sedona board member, executive director and conductor of Verde Valley Sinfonietta and board co-chair of Sedona Cultural Collaborative. in many ways, he says, The arTs chose him long ago.
Born in San Francisco, he made cross-country moves with his family, as his father, a Nabisco executive, was transferred every 18 months. His dad was also an accomplished flute player and performed with local symphonies wherever the family was. “In addition to practicing every night, every so often he and his friends would rehearse woodwind chamber music down in the living room thinking I was sound asleep,” he recalls. “Not so! How would that be possible? How could anyone fall asleep with that fantastic music just yards away?” His music teachers and school conductors joined his father as mentors, as he played piano, the sousaphone and percussion in school bands, sang in choirs, and eventually decided that conducting would be his focus. During Fox’s undergraduate and graduate years, Oberlin Conservatory, located just outside of Cleveland, often hosted the great musicians of the Cleveland Orchestra, who taught,

performed and gave master classes. That great ensemble often performed at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel under maestros George Szell, Pierre Boulez and Robert Shaw. He also learned from, and was particularly inspired by, his conducting professor and dean of the Oberlin Conservatory, Robert Fountain: “As a person and conductor, he embodied every electrifying quality that absolutely brought music to life.” scoring For postErity
The idea for the Sedona Conservatory began decades ago as Fox spoke with friends and colleagues. “We all realized that none of us had actually ‘decided’ to become musicians, opera singers, dancers or actors,” he says. “Rather, the art and its pursuit had chosen us. Art was not a career choice. Art was, and continues to be, life itself.” That life in art continues today, as those early ideas for the Sedona Conservatory develop toward fruition. Fleming’s, Your Prime Steakhouse Experience written by David M. Brown Even with Arizona’s many fine steakhouses, Fleming’s remains a prime choice. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar robustly continues the 20-year mission of its restaurateur founders, Valley resident Paul Fleming and business partner Bill Allen of Newport Beach, California. “They never wanted to be another traditional dark lit, super-masculine steakhouse,” says Chef Jeff Fearing, who guides the location adjacent to the Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas, Lincoln Drive and Scottsdale Road. “From the start back in 1998, they wanted a female-friendly steakhouse with a diverse menu that satisfied many appetites and palates.” Today, the two original restaurants, including central Scottsdale and Newport Beach, have expanded to 70 nationwide and one in São Paulo, Brazil. The other Arizona locations are in north Scottsdale at Market Street at DC Ranch, Peoria, Chandler and Tucson. “At Fleming’s, a steak is never just a steak,” chef says. “We offer the finest USDA Prime beef broiled at 1,600 degrees or Volume XV, Number 08
iron crusted. We also feature a 35-ounce Prime Tomahawk –– an experience for any steak enthusiast. It’s heavily marbled, juicy and brimming with rich flavor from being broiled with the long bone-in.” Fleming’s is also known for its award-winning wine list that has won Wine Spectator’s annual Award of Excellence. The Grilled Lamp Lollipops, for example, are extremely tender New Zealand lamb grilled to your taste on a bed of tomato, arugula, Castelvetrano olives and herbed goat cheese. And, a guest favorite, the Filet Mignon & Potato Waffle, is a tasteful cover of traditional “meat and potatoes” with demiglace and horseradish cream sauce adding a little snap. Choose from three burgers: The Prime Burger, with Wisconsin cheddar cheese and peppered bacon; the new and already popular California Burger, a “party on a patty,” with tomato, arugula, bacon, avocado, cheddar cheese and smoked jalapeño aioli; and the vegetarian Mushroom-Farro Burger, with house-made mushrooms (shiitakes and buttons), chick peas, goat cheese, arugula, Campari tomatoes and a fried onion ring. The chef’s “showstopper” on the Bar Menu is the Colossal Shrimp Tempura, with gigantic freshwater U-6s butterflied and very lightly battered, accompanied by similarly prepared mushrooms, asparagus, red pepper, lemon and an agrodolce sauce, combining soy sauce, brown sugar, rice wine, garlic and ginger. For vegetarians, the same plate is available as the Harvest Vegetable Tempura without the shrimp. Embedded in the core menu of every Fleming’s is the Chef’s Table Menu, unique to each restaurant. In central Scottsdale, this appears as “Chef Jeff’s Table.” “Our new menu complements the unique character of each Fleming’s restaurant and allows us to proudly showcase our own Volume XV, Number 08
unique culinary talent and tailor our menu selections to local guest desires and regional tastes,” chef says. “At Fleming’s, our common purpose is to deliver person alized, memorable dining experiences,” explains Christopher, noting that these appetizers, sides and entrées, including lamb, seafood and beef, change every 30 days. “We pull our menu through the farmers market, while continuing to do what we do best: serve the highest quality USDA prime steaks paired with a tailored wine list and legendary hospitality.” One already popular side dish is the Thai Green Beans with red onions, sesame seeds and a spicy, but not too spicy, Thai sauce that deliciously offsets the accompanying dishes. Another is Elote, a traditional Mexican street dish with roasted sweet corn left on the cob, sourced from farms on the west side of the Valley with cilantro crema, Parmesan cheese and chili lime spice. “Growing up as a kid here, we had the elote man, who came by on his bike, and we bought it from him,” says chef, whose family owns Sonoran-style Mexican restaurants on the west side. So, this childhood memory has become part of his Chef’s Menu. Once again diversity is key. Chef Jeff’s Table menu includes Sweet N Spicy Pork Ribs, Grilled Lamb Loin and Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon & Seafood Duo with shrimp and scallops. Even the desserts are custom, as chef and staff also make homemade ice creams. “Not everyone knows, but we are a scratch kitchen; we make everything here, and everything is cooked to order,” Chef Jeff explains. Boss Mobile Detailing: The Gloss and Depth of a Ceramic Pro Coating Written by David M. Brown Cars coated with Ceramic Pro have the ultimate longlasting protection, gloss, and shine. “The benefit of having your car coated with Ceramic Pro is long-lasting resistance from UV rays, chemicals and scuffs and cleanliness as well as an unrivalled gloss you have to see to believe,” says Alex Bolton, who founded Boss Mobile Detailing in Scottsdale in May 2015. The ceramic-based nano-technology is much harder and longer lasting than other coating products on the market, explains Bolton, who works with a partner and one employee. “Once applied to a properly prepared surface, it permeates into the pores of that substrate, then chemically bonds to it, becoming a structural part of the surface.” In the detailing business, the term “9H” describes Ceramic Pro because the product has been independently tested and proven to give vehicle paint up to nine times its original hardness while significantly improving appearance. And, Ceramic Pro can be layered; as each layer is added, the benefits multiply. Recently, Highline Autos publisher, Brian Graff, had his BMW 750i treated. Bolton and crew came to his Scottsdale home to complete the process. He can also work at a business location. First, they washed the car with a foam cannon, then gave it a thorough clay bar and iron deposit decontamination. “This removes any contaminants that are embedded in the paint surface, leaving it truly clean and making it primed for the paint-correction process,” Bolton explains. The two-stage paint correction consists of a compound polishing to remove the deeper scratches and swirl marks and then a finishing polish to give the paint incredible Volume XV, Number 08
depth and gloss. The car is next prepared for the coating process with a solvent that removes any oils and product left over from the paint-correction process. Finally, the ceramic coating is applied, in this case a Ceramic Pro Bronze package, which includes a two-year warranty covering the paint, trim, headlights and taillights, glass and wheel faces. Costs vary depending on the vehicle size, value and the package selected, from $275 to $1,900 and more; warranties range from six months through a lifetime. Additional services can be added such as wheel-off coating in which the barrel and brake caliper are cleaned, polished and coated. When the warranty is recorded into Ceramic Pro’s database, it is sent to CARFAX® to stay with the vehicle history, improving resale value. The warranty is also transferable between owners, Bolton explains. Boss Mobile Detailing also provides interior and engine detailing as well as wet sanding, ozone treatment, steam cleaning and paint correction. And, he works with Protective Film Solutions in Scottsdale to provide clear bra and tint concierge services. In addition, he has another company which offers applications to homes, offices, restaurants and personal accessories such as glass, stone, countertops, stainless steel appliances and shower doors. “I founded the business on honesty and expertise,” Bolton says. “I don’t sell people on hopes and dreams. The August feature was German high-performance sedans and just as with all the five-hundred plus cars that came out, they obviously don’t have any overheating issues, and do have good air-conditioning systems. There was no shortage of AMG’s, M version Bimmers and RS Audis, many of them sporting very nice power and body modifications. The Audi and BMW Clubs arrived in a very colorful and somewhat loud convoy much to everyone’s delight.
As always there were lots of spectators braving the heat to see so many of the very best cars in the valley affirming Scottsdale’s well-deserved reputation as automobile heaven.
The feature on Saturday September 1 is pairs where we will pair up similar versions of cars to highlight the difference in styling, aerodynamics, engines, wheels, tires and more. For example, we will have mid 90’s front engine V12 Ferraris next to contemporary ones, rear engine Lamborghinis next to modern ones, E-type Jags next to F-Types, original SL model Mercedes’ next to current SLS’s, 60’s era Stingrays next to current Stingrays, and many other examples.
The official show hours are 7AM – 10AM but in reality the show is usually well underway an hour earlier. The location is the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center on the north-west corner of Scottsdale Rd. and Mayo Boulevard, one block south of the 101 Freeway.

Through his uniquely artful lens, a Bugatti and a Horch from the ’30s dramatically display their power and beauty, a ‘40s Delahaye models its voluptuous curves, a Cunningham bulges power and even a well-patinaed Austin-Healey offers a “Grace” that brings tears. required, although admission is free. “I’ll be talking a little about my studio techniques, how I’ve been fortunate to work over the years with stewards of great cars, museums, manufacturers and collectors to preserve our automotive history. And, I’ll be offering some examples of my work,” says Furman, who’s photographed noted collections such as the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard and the Simeone Museum in his native Philadelphia. “Michael Furman has taken the art of photographing automobiles to a new level,” says Dr. Fred Simeone, whose stellar collection includes Daytona Coupe CSX2287, The

Highline Autos “Hippie” Porsche 917, second at LeMans in 1970, the LeMans-winning Bugatti “Tank,” and the Mille Miglia-winning Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM. “Whatever he photographs seems to develop a personality and immediately a call to appreciate the designer’s skill.” His standard practice, Simeone explains: “The room is draped in nonreflective black velvet. Single illumination, longer and wider than the car, bathes his subject. He shoots from 75 feet away, often at ground level, to get the true perspective of the car as it was designed. Nothing is airbrushed or altered. The integrity of his appreciation of the car is manifest in the final result. “The combination of thoughtful positioning, revealing lighting, state-of-the-art equipment, and most notably, Michael’s keen aesthetic sense produce an incomparable result, easily recognized by automotive aficionados everywhere,” he adds. “You often hear you have never realized the lines of your own automobile until seeing a Furman image of it.” Seeing the Light in the Basement In Philly, his neighbor’s father had built a basement darkroom. “They had a few wonderful pre-war cameras, and I immediately took an interest,” he says. That was in 1964. At about the same time, he saw a 1963 Corvette Split Window Coupe, one of the world’s most beautiful sports cars, and
snapped a shot. That focused him for life. “Although the cameras and the subject matter first motivated me, it was a fascination with light that really captivated me,” he explains. I spent all of junior and senior high school gazing out the window watching the effect of the sun as the day progressed. When I got home from school, I went right into the darkroom and worked all night. I was obsessed.” He chose the Rochester Institute of Technology in photogenic upstate New York for college because this was the only program in the country offering a BFA in Photographic Illustration. “The professors were very considerate of me, and, because I had a fair amount of experience, they allowed me to explore things on my own and at my own pace,” he says. Returning to Philadelphia with his rare degree, he also already had a professional-looking portfolio to call on ad agencies and design firms to begin establishing his name. “Because I was so young, and very motivated, many of the older agency people took a liking to me,” he recalls. “I rewarded their faith in me by never letting them down, no matter how hard I had to work to please them.” For the first decade of business, he made a good living shooting studio still life: portraits, fashion and other niches. He investigated the work of well-known photographers to understand concepts and trends and styles. “For example, the wonderful simplicity of Richard Avedon’s

Highline Autos fashion and portrait work taught me to allow the subject matter to come through,” he explains. “The photograph is about the subject, not the person who took the picture.” Moving forward, he wanted to shoot subjects that he had an interest in, and cars were out front. In 1983, he borrowed a Mercedes-Benz 380 SEC from a local dealer, which allowed him to shoot in their repair area. He sent a few shots to the marque’s New York ad agency. Two days later, he met with its representatives and had his first car assignment. For another decade, he worked for manufacturers and then was asked to shoot some classic cars for a paper company promotion. “After five minutes with a Delahaye, Bugatti, Stutz and Delage, I was hooked,” he recalls. “I’ve been shooting the great collections, unique cars and historically significant cars ever since.” He’s had gallery and museum exhibitions in the U.S., Europe and Asia, including The Louvre, MFA Boston, The High Museum, Phoenix Art Museum and the Beijing Automotive Museum. In 2005 he founded Coachbuilt Press and has written, photographed and published 20-plus titles and participated in another 20 books such as Speed, Style, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection. And, he’s a frequent featured artist, judge and sponsor at concours events nationwide. Cam Ingram worked with Furman while co-publishing Porsche Unexpected: Discoveries in Collecting with him in 2014. “Michael’s uncanny eye and portraiture approach to automobile photography is one of the highlights of Porsche

Unexpected. His images convey the evolution of the Porsche design language in a beautiful and cohesive manner. In effect, the cars and engineered details speak for themselves through his images,” he says. The career ride has brought him to unexpected places. “I did not expect that when I picked up a camera in 1964 that I would somehow find myself in the middle of the collector car world,” Furman says. “I’ve been fortunate enough to attend major events around the world and meet some of the most extraordinary people you could imagine.” Furman’s artistry is celebrated throughout the car industry. “Michael is the definitive studio photographer, who has taken his art to its highest form,” says Rupert Banner, group motoring director and vice president for Bonhams auction house from its New York City office. “He has both a passion and knowledge of the cars and the people that own them and is able to capture the very essence of why a car was so appealing and continues to be today. Highline Autos it starts out at the top of the automotive food chain, but in this case, the car is even more significant than that. “Bugatti was mostly known for Grand Prix race cars and luxurious touring cars, but this car was built to race at Le Mans, the 24-hour French sports car race that is the ultimate test of car and driver. The “Tank” not only won the race (the first of two Bugattis to do so) but then went on and set more than 20 international word speed records that were not broken for almost 30 years.” •1936 Stout Scarab (Private collection) –– “One of only a handful that were made, the Stout Scarab was the first ‘minivan,’ appearing decades before the genre became a staple on American roads. It is technologically fascinating with a rear engine, and only the driver and front passenger seats are bolted to the floor. The rest of the seats are loose, which makes for a memorable ride down a winding road.” •1937 Horch 853 Sport Cabriolet (Private collection) –– “This unique car is one of the most dramatic cars one could ever hope to see, let alone photograph. It has won Best of Show at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and similar titles everywhere it appears. For a late ’30s prewar car, it has a level of artistry and grandeur you would not have expected from that era. A true masterpiece.” •1947 Delahaye 135MS by Figoni & Falaschi (Private collection) –– “This is one of the first concours cars I ever experienced in person. I was so moved that I asked the owner if I could bring it into the studio, and he graciously agreed. That was more than 25 years ago, and I still smile when I see this photograph.” •1952 Cunningham C4-RK (The Collier Collection at the
Revs Institute) ––“I was fortunate enough to shoot his car in 1992, and for many years it was the only car photograph of mine that hung in my studio. I don’t think any others have exceeded it, but I learned so much from the experience. I did not have any pre-conceived ideas as to what to do with it but instead allowed the car to speak for itself. That may be the most important lesson I’ve ever learned.” •1953 Austin-Healey 100M, “Grace” (John Nikas and “Drive Away Cancer”) –– “My favorite car to photograph? Until I met John Nikas, I did not have a good answer. John’s story is a long and fascinating tale that never leaves a dry eye in the house. “The short of it is that John’s friend purchased the AustinHealey so that the two of them could do a cross-country trip. John’s friend became very ill with cancer and could not go with John who chose to do the roundtrip to honor him. With the help of the Southern California Healey Club, they got this disheveled little Healey running, and John set out on a memorable journey. “The word got out about his trip and before he knew it, he was being intercepted by cancer patients –– kids and their parents –– who wanted to go for a ride in ‘Grace.’ The little car that shouldn’t have made it did, and that launched John and Grace into a three-year 300,000-plus mile journey, putting smiles on the faces of 20,000 young cancer patients. “More than 6,500 names have been written with a Sharpie on the car, many of these fighting cancer, many who have died since that journey. 68th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is August 26 Written by David M. Brown OSCA –– the “giant killer” –– will be a featured class at the 68th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 26. Automobiles and motorcycles will be judged and awarded in 29 classes for historical accuracy, technical merit and style. The world-destination event raises almost $2 million annually for local charities. To date, donations by Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® total more than $25 million. The culmination of Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Automotive Week, the Concours will welcome thousands of enthusiasts to The Lodge at Pebble Beach™ and 200 of the world’s prized collector cars. The event will showcase 15 cars from OSCA–Fratelli Maserati to tell the story of the Italian marque, which debuted in 1947. Seven years later, an OSCA MT4 1500 Spider won the 12 Hours of Sebring outright by five-plus laps. Owned by Briggs Cunningham and driven by Stirling Moss and Bill Lloyd, the classic racer is now in The Collier Collection at The Revs Institute in Naples, Florida, and exemplifies OSCA’s wining mix: lightweight, reliable, built to win. The 1949 OSCA MT4 Siluro — the second OSCA created — is the earliest of the marque at this year’s Concours. Another OSCA is a 1952 MT4 MM Spider. Meet Your Match Matchmaker Wanda Ewasiuk makes it her daily goal to bring elite clients together to find loven written by Nick Esquer When online dating burst onto the scene in the late 90’s, most people brushed it off as an Internet experimentation fad; a spinoff of the dot-com boom that saw a general excited fascination with this thing call the world wide web. Fast-forward about 15 years and people began swiping to find their perfect match for life or the next few months or the night. While these novel ideas of online and mobile dating has made dating playful, it has also saturated the dating scene, thus shrouding it in a thick cologne and perfume cloud of last night’s cocktails. This is where Wanda Ewasiuk comes into play. She’s a matchmaker in the traditional sense to some degree, and a trendsetter in the industry in others. She has a mission besides getting people to meet: change the modern aspect on dating life. “I love to say thank goodness for online dating,” says Wanda, who heads up Tessa Loren, a matchmaking service that brings together elite and executive men with female matches. “People are getting exhausted of [online dating]. and they want a serious relationship.” Ewasiuk, whose matchmaking firm serves clients in areas like Scottsdale, Newport Beach, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver, has a background in therapy and was always a trusted advisor to close friends growing up. “Everyone would come to me and tell me about their problems and I would offer advice. I always felt comfortable lending my advice,” she notes. The calling to become a matchmaker was a natural fit. Ewasiuk expanded her natural abilities of helping people to providing the opportunity to men and women to meet the perfect match. “I love love,” she declares as a driving force behind her daily mission. “I grew up in a very loving home and I see so many people don’t have that. Her scientific approach to bringing like-minded people together is thorough, investigative almost. “I’m there to guide them and they can utilize me at any time. Expectations may be aloft and sometimes they’re not ready or follow advice.” “As a matchmaker, I provide more than just introductions,” says Ewasiuk, “but I also help my clients to learn more about themselves. What exactly it is they're seeking in a partner and help them grow throughout their journey.” For the matchmaker this is a very close relationship between her and her clients as they're sharing the most private intimate details about themselves. “It is also my expertise to realize if they're ready to hire me as their matchmaker or if they require some relationship consulting first.” TessaLoren.com gets nearly all of its business through referral, meaning it has credibility and authentic results. Sixth Annual Carmel Mission Classic is August 22 Written by David M. Brown Chris Cord will appear with a 1937 812 Cabriolet manufactured by his grandfather, E.L. Cord, and Phil Hill’s 1927 Packard will be shown at this year’s Carmel Mission Classic, Wednesday, August 22. More than 1,000 car lovers are expected to attend the sixth annual event, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the historic Carmel Mission Basilica, 3080 Rio Road in Carmel. Approximately 50 cars and 10 motorcycles cars will to be shown. The early missionary to the area, Father Junípero Serra, is buried on the church grounds; he was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. All of the net proceeds assist the charities of the Knights of Columbus and the Carmel Mission. Packard will be the featured marque, including the 1927 Packard 343 Convertible Sedan, restored and once owned by the great driver; this is presented by the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, which maintains a stellar collection of classic autos at its downtown campus. Another Packard, a 1925 truck built exclusively for use in the company’s factory, will be presented by its owner, local restaurateur Pat Phinney; his Baja Cantina Grill & Filling Station in Carmel will offer nominally priced food during the day. Other feature cars are a 1909 Franklin, a 2018 Ford GT, 2018 Ferrari 488, and an Enzo and a Pagani from an exotic car collector in Texas. A U.S. Marine color guard from the Defense Language Institute will begin the event, and Bishop Sylvester Ryan will offer the annual blessing of the cars. Audrain Museum Holds Summer ‘Circus’ Gala August 31 written by David M. Brown Come one, come all! The annual Summer Gala to benefit the Audrain Automobile Museum takes place August 31 at famed Ochre Court in Newport Beach, Rhode Island. Themed as a Vintage Circus, the event includes a Big Tent and Midway with 20-plus circus acts, featuring seasoned performers from famed companies such as Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers and Big Apple Circus. “Aerial silk acts, contortionists, tightrope walkers, fire breathers, jugglers and more will astound and amaze everyone as you enjoy amazing hors d’oeuvres and dinner, circustheme cocktails and spectacular cars from the museum’s collections,” says Marketing Director Rick Shad. 22nd Ironstone Concours D’Elegance is September 22 Written by David M. Brown A classic Isotta Fraschini will be one of the highlights of the 22nd Ironstone Concours D’Elegance September 22, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at Ironstone Vineyards 1894 Six Mile Road, Murphys, California, held amidst the historic goldmining area of the Sierra Nevada, about two hours from Sacramento. The 1928 Isotta Fraschini was built by the luxury Milanbased carmaker, founded in 1900, and comes to the event from the collection of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Join the Club As a Spring Mountain Club member, you receive at least 16 track days per month on various track configurations spanning from the 6.1-mile course as well as access to onsite condo and garage rentals, track support, club racing and a personal concierge to facilitate every visit and more. And, you can attend any performance driving program while experiencing all benefits of membership. Performance driving schools are scheduled for Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1, as well as for Cadillac’s ATS-V and CTS-V models.
