2012 Season Preview The 2012 High Point University baseball season will be the fourth under head coach Craig Cozart and his staff as they look to make a run at the program’s first Big South title. The team has 21 newcomers that make up a recruiting class that was picked among the best in the country by Collegiate Baseball. With nine junior college transfers, including two NJCAA All-Americans, and 14 returners, includ four players coming back from redshirt seasons, the Panthers have the experience and depth needed to compete against some of the best teams in the country. Right-handed pitcher Jaime Schultz, infielder Sal Pezzino and utility player Ryan Retz highlight the Panthers returning players. Schultz was an AllConference pitcher as a freshman before missing last season due to injury. Pezzino is a career .327 hitter who can play anywhere on the infield and Retz proved himself to be a formidable player at the plate and on the mound last season. Baseball America picked High Point to finish third in the Big South this season and listed Schultz and junior right-handed pitcher Malcolm Clapsaddle among the top pro prospects in the league. STARTING ROTATION A talented crop of newcomers have battled with returning starters Jared Avidon, Zach Haile and Ryan Retz for places in the starting rotation. Newcomers Clapsaddle, Jon Carlson, Jacob Newberry and Matt Armstead join HPU after stellar junior college careers. Cozart has seven players cometing for five spots in the starting rotation. Clapsaddle was a NJCAA All-American last season at Santa Fe College and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He went 11-2 with a 1.81 ERA at Santa Fe, striking out 103 batters in 89-1/3 innings. Carlson also earned junior college All-American honors last season, going 10-1 with a 2.01 ERA. The 6-foot, 4-inch left hander played for Parkland College last season, the same junior college former Panther All-American Nate Roberts hailed from. Newberry and Armstead are

Ryan Retz

are expected to compete for a spot in the starting rotation along with Avidon. Avidon has shown improvement in each of his first two seasons with HPU and had a very productive fall. Haile, a redshirt sophomore, is back after missing the 2011 season with an injury and is capable if starting in midweek games or coming out of the bullpen. Retz will be a key midweek starter when he isn’t patrolling right field for the Panthers. BULLPEN This year Cozart will have more options in the bullpen than ever before, highlighted by Schultz who will step in to the closer role after starting as a freshman in 2010. Schultz went 5-0 in his rookie season with 68 strikeouts in 57-2/3 innings. He made the move to the bullpen after missing all of last season. Junior Kyle Wigmore also has experience at the end of the game and freshman lefty Will Resnik is an option late in the game. Wigmore had a breakout freshman campaign, including a key save in the 2010 Big South Conference Tournament. He struggled as a sophomore but Cozart said he was back in top form throughout the fall. Senior lefty Nick Schumacher, sophomore right hander John Maloney and freshman right hander Joe Goodman will be critical pieces in bridging the gap between the starters and Schultz. Last year Schumacher pitched a career-hig 21-2/3 innings in 21 appearances as the staff’s left-handed specialist. He was called on more than anyone to come in for one or two key outs. Juniors Adam Pratson and Jordan Foster, sophomore Mike Petilli and freshmen Stephen Wytiaz, Cody Manzella and Harrison Phillips add depth to WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

HIGH POINT

UNIVERSITY

2012 HPU Baseball the relief staff. Manzella and Wytiaz are two-way players who could see time in the outfield when they aren’t needed on the mound. CATCHERS There are three talented catchers vying for time behind the plate this season. Junior Zach Tessier and freshmen Spencer Angelis and Josh Spano all bring something different to the position and give Cozart options throughout the season. Tessier was the backup behind Kyle Mahoney the last two seasons while also playing first and third base when needed. He could see time at any of those positions as well as stepping in as the designated hitter. Angelis is a great defensive catcher who is expected to hit for a high average. As a senior at Timber Creek High School in Orlando, Fla. he hit .512 with 39 runs scored, 34 RBI and a .652 onbase percentage. Spano has a great arm that will limit opponents’ running games this season. He has the ability to drive in runs in the middle of the lineup. INFIELD A pair of returners are battling for the starting job at first base, but High Point will have newcomers everywhere else on the infield that bring speed and clean defense. Pezzino and redshirt sophomore Andrew Bartlett are competing for time at first with the other likely getting penciled in as the designated hitter. Pezzino’s greatest asset is his defensive versatility. He has played every position on the infield in his career and can step in at second or third base at any time. Bartlett missed the 2011 season but hit .302 with 34 RBI and 32 runs scored as a freshman. Newcomers Willie Medina and Mike Miedzianowski are the likely starters up the middle this season. Medina, the shortstop, is a transfer from Seminole State College where he was an All-Conference honoree last season. He hit .324 with 34 runs scored and 25 stolen bases. Medina is also a switch hitter who will bat at the top of the order. Miedzianowski was a 22nd-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles out of high school but opted to attend High Point. He will start at second base this season but has the range and arm strength to play short stop in the future. Freshman Ryne Rush is a gifted hitter and natural athlete who moved himself to the front of the third base discussion after a tremendous fall. Two other freshman, Dane McDermott and John WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

Prospectus & Record Book Siciliano along with junior Zach Hubbard will fight for time on the infield. Hubbard is an extremely reliable defensive player who could start up the middle if needed. OUTFIELD Retz will be the starting right fielder this season after playing in center last year. He hit .288 with 43 RBI and led the team with seven home runs in 2011. Retz can also play first base and will be a midweek starting pitcher. Sean Wilson is back and healthy this season to patrol center field. He sat out last year with an injury after joining HPU from Sal Pezzino McHenry County College where he hit .517 with 10 home runs, 45 RBI, 71 runs scored and 20 stolen bases in 2010. Newcomer Devin Bujnovsky will start in left field this season. He comes to High Point from Tallahassee Community College, the same school former HPU outfielder Steve Antolik transferred from. Bujnovsky hit .317 as a sophomore last season for the Eagles. Wytiaz, Manzella and Brett Miller, all freshmen, will back up the starters this season.

Craig Cozart

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Central Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009

The 2012 season will be head coach Craig Cozart’s fourth as the leader of the High Point University baseball team. Cozart has a reputation for recruiting and developing pitching staffs. He has had 27 pitchers drafted in the Major League Baseball draft under his guidance, including former Panther Cody Allen in 2011. In his first three seasons at HPU, Cozart has led the team to program records in wins and nearly every offensive category. Five Panthers have signed professional contracts, including Allen and relief pitcher Jeremy Berg who has worked his way up to AAA in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim farm system. This season, Cozart’s recruiting class was heralded as one of the best in the country by Collegiate Baseball. The incoming group includes two junior college All-Americans and two players drafted in 2011. In 2010, Cozart led the program to its first winning season in the Division I era, posting a 3129 (15-12 Big South Conference). The Panthers finished third in the Big South Tournament, the best finish for HPU and set program records in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. Cozart’s first season at HPU was 2009 and he led the team to a 21-32 overall record and an 1112 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over Coastal Carolina, which was ranked 14th at the time. The Panthers got wins over Winthrop and Charleston Southern in the

Big South Tournament, the first time HPU ever won two games in the conference postseason. Cozart came to HPU after 12 seasons at his alma mater, UCF, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant coach to associate head coach. He helped develop UCF into one of the nation’s elite Division I baseball programs. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence during his time with Central Florida. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. The Knights made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that stretch and also captured four conference championships. Cozart’s coaching career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001. In addition, each of his last three recruiting classes at UCF were ranked in the top-40 nationally. The 2008 class was ranked seventh by Perfect Game Cross Checker. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. In addition, junior lefty Jaime Douglas was a 26th-round selection of the Angels. Fox and Bono were the second pair of AllAmericans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in

2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. From 1997 to 2001, Cozart saw the pitching staffs under his tutelage improve from a 33rd ranking in ERA with a 4.60 to a 10th place ranking in 1998 (3.94) to a best of 3.62 during the 2001 season, which ranked 16th nationally in ERA. An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a threetime All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teamS. Cozart was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks. Cozart was honored for his success as both a coach and a player in 2011 when he was inducted in to his high school’s Hall of Fame. The Master’s Academy in Oviedo, Fla. included Cozart in the inaugural Hall of Fame class. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb, Jacob and Samuel.
