STARTING ROTATION Heading into the season High Point enjoys the luxury of a deep crop of pitchers competing for a spot in the starting rotation. Seniors Jared Avidon, Jacob Newberry and Ryan Retz, redshirt-juniors Zach Haile, Sean Townsley and Jaime Schultz and sophomore Will Resnik will all be considered for the five starting spots. Avidon is an experienced pitcher who has started 31 games for the Panthers in his first three years with the team. In his final three starts of 2012 the right hander appeared to turn a corner, posting a 2.25 ERA and throwing a complete game shutout at Winthrop. Newberry pitched well in his first season with HPU, going 4-7 with a 4.60 ERA. The right hander led HPU starters with 51 strikeouts on the season. He performed well in the fall and appears primed for an even better second season with the Panthers. Retz has proven to be a valuable player for High Point on the mound in his first two seasons. In 2012, he was forced into the Friday starter roll after a couple injuries and performed well, finishing with a 6-5 record and a 4.16 ERA. This season he will move back to a midweek role so as to maximize his performance in the field. Townsley is a tall 6-foot-7 lefthander who is returning from injury this season. He is expected to challenge for a spot in the weekend

rotation. Haile will once again try and work his way into the starting rotation after missing most of 2012 due to an injury. After pitching well out of the bullpen last season Resnik will compete for a midweek spot in 2013. Schultz will start 2013 in the bullpen but is expected to transition into the starting rotation at some point during the season. BULLPEN The bullpen will be led by returning Freshman All-American Joe Goodman, who will be counted on as High Point’s rock at the back end. Last season, Goodman finished with a 2.32 ERA and a team-high 58 strikeouts in 54-1/3 innings. Newcomers Michael Heller and Mike Krumm will handle long relief responsibilities for the Panthers. Heller began his collegiate career at Florida and pitched last season for Miami Dade College where he compiled a 1-0 record and a 4.15 ERA. Krumm played for Saint Louis Community College-Meramec last season and notched 50 strikeouts. Short relief will feature a deep group of arms for the Panthers as returning players such as senior Kyle Wigmore, redshirt-junior Malcolm Clapsaddle and junior John Maloney will fill the gap between the starters and Goodman. Wigmore is an experienced reliever with a devastating slider. Last season, the senior posted a 4.76 ERA in 18 appearances. Clapsaddle was a starter at the beginning of last season before going down due to injury. He will open the season in the bullpen as he builds up his arm strength. In four starts last season the righty posted a 2-1 record and a 3.47 ERA. Maloney made 11 appearances out of the bullpen in 2012 and picked up 17 strikeouts in 13-1/3 innings. Seniors Cody Ferguson and Adam Pratson, junior Kyle Brandenburg and sophomore Cody Manzella will all provide additional depth in the bullpen. Manzella and Brandenburg are both two-way players who are also expected to contribute a great deal offensively throughout the season. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

2013 HPU Baseball CATCHERS High Point returns both of its starting catchers from 2012. Sophomores Spencer Angelis and Josh Spano both saw time behind the plate last season and are expected to contribute in 2013. Angelis is a skilled defensive backstop who works well with the pitching staff and is a good blocker on pitches in the dirt. He has an advanced approach at the plate and last season hit .261 with seven doubles and 17 RBI. Angelis came up big for the Panthers in the Big South Championship, hitting .313 with three doubles and four runs scored in four games to earn All-Tournament honors. Spano is a big physical presence who is a very good receiver on defense. He has a powerful arm that rates among the best in the conference. At the plate, Spano has big power potential that he is just cracking into. Last season he hit .248 with seven doubles and a triple. Senior Scott Glover and freshman Dominic Fazio will provide depth at the catcher position in 2013. Glover is a versatile defender who will also plays at first and in the corner outfield positions. He is a solid hitter that has a proven ability to provide a spark off the bench. Fazio is a quality hitter who is still developing as a defender. INFIELD Retz returns to man first base for the Panthers in 2013 after a strong junior season which saw him hit .285 with a team-high four home runs and 43 RBI. He is an athletic defender who can take runs off the board and save potential errors. Graduate student Adam Barry is a power bat who joined HPU after graduating from Cal State Northridge. He will see time at first, in the corner outfield spots and at designated hitter. Brandenburg will take over at second base for sophomore Mike Miedzianowski who slides over to third base. Brandenburg transferred from nearby Guilford Tech where he led the team with 20 stolen bases. He is a smooth defender with a strong arm and a quick release. Medina finished his first season at HPU hitting .310 with 34 runs scored and a team-high 19 steals. He is a very good defender and a top of the order bat who will be counted on to set the table for the Panthers in 2013. Miedzianowski slides over to the hot corner after starting 43 games at second as a freshman. He finished his first collegiate season hitting .206 with 21 runs scored and had at least one hit in six of HPU’s last seven games. In the second game between Campbell and High Point at the Big South Championship he hit 2-for-3 with three RBI. Junior transfer Ryan Heim and sophomore John Siciliano will battle for time both in the middle infield and at third. Heim is a blue-collar player who is quietly effective at the plate. Siciliano is a high-energy defender who will be counted on to do the little things. OUTFIELD Senior Devin Bujnovsky will man right field for High Point once again in 2013. Bujnovsky finished 2012 hitting WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

Prospectus & Record Book .255 with 11 extra-base hits including Ryan Retz two home runs. He is an excellent defender with a strong arm and led all Panther outfielders in assists last season with 15. Sophomore Dane McDermott ended his freshman season as High Point’s starting centerfielder and made waves with several exciting defensive plays. He also performed well at the plate, hitting .269 with 26 runs scored, and on the base paths where he finished third on the team with 12 stolen bases. The sophomore is a versatile player who may also see time in the infield. Senior Sean Wilson returns to man left field for the Panthers in 2013. Wilson started every game last season and hit .296 with a team-high 48 runs scored. He is a swift fielder who covers ground and protects the line well as a left hander. Manzella, junior transfer Blake Hutton, sophomore Stephen Wytiaz and freshmen Sly Edwards have all performed well in the fall and will see time in the outfield during the season. Manzella and Edwards are speedy players who can man centerfield and hit at the top of the lineup while Hutton and Wytiaz both possess good power potential and project more in the middle of the order.

HIGH POINT 2013 HPU Baseball

UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book

Craig Cozart

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Central Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009

The 2013 season is head coach Craig Cozart’s fifth at the helm of the High Point University baseball team. Cozart has a reputation for recruiting and developing pitching staffs. He has had 27 pitchers drafted in the Major League Baseball draft under his guidance, including former Panther and current Cleveland Indian Cody Allen who was drafted in 2011. Cozart came to HPU after 12 seasons at his alma mater, UCF, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant coach to associate head coach. He was named High Point baseball’s fifth head coach in June 2008 and has led HPU to program records in wins and nearly every offensive category. HPU won two games in the Big South Championship for the third time in four seasons under Cozart in 2012 and became the first No. 7 seed to advance to the Big South semifinals since 2000. High Point finished the season with 28 wins, the second-most in a season for the Panthers since beginning Div. I play in 2000. In 2010, Cozart led the program to its first winning season in the Division I era, posting a 31-29 mark (15-12 Big South Conference). The Panthers finished third in the Big South Tournament, the best-ever finish for HPU and set program records in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. Cozart joined HPU in 2009 and he led the team to a 21-32 overall record and an 11-12 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over Coastal Carolina, which was ranked 14th at the time. The Panthers got wins over Winthrop and Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament, the first time HPU ever won two games in the conference postseason.

Associate Head Coach Bryan Peters 4

Cozart was a key member of the Knight coaching staff for over a decade, helping develop UCF into one of the nation’s elite Division I baseball programs. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence during his time with Central Florida. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. The Knights made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that stretch and also captured four conference championships. Cozart’s coaching career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001. The Knights boasted a program best 51-14 record that season. In addition, each of his last three recruiting classes at UCF were ranked in the top-40 nationally. The 2008 class was ranked seventh by Perfect Game Cross Checker. With a great eye for talent and an outstanding ability to develop pitchers, 32 of Cozart’s pitchers have signed professional contracts, including 27 in the Major League Draft. In his first season at High Point, closer Jeremy Berg signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. Bono earned the largest signing bonus in draft history for an eighth-rounder. In addition, junior lefty Jaime Douglas was a 26th-round selection of the Anaheim Angels. Fox and Bono were both named All-Americans in 2004. They formed one of the nation’s elite pitch-

ing tandems. Fox finished the year 14-2 with a 1.85 ERA while Bono was 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA en route to second-team All-America status. The pair was part of a pitching staff that finished 10th in the nation in ERA with a 3.42 mark. The 2004 UCF staff also shattered the school record with 13 shutouts. It was the second pair of All-Americans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in 2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. From 1997 to 2001, Cozart saw the pitching staffs under his tutelage improve from a 33rd ranking in ERA with a 4.60 to a 10th place ranking in 1998 (3.94) to a best of 3.62 during the 2001 season, which ranked 16th nationally in ERA. An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a three-time All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teams as a player for the Black and Gold. Cozart was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks to further his education and begin his coaching career at his alma mater. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb, Jacob and Samuel.
