STARTING ROTATION The Panthers will have a new-look starting rotation in 2014 after losing its top six starters from last season to graduation and the MLB draft. Senior Mike Krumm and graduate student Jon Carlson will be counted on to lead the staff as the only HPU pitchers with Div. I starting experience. Krumm is the lone returning starter from last season, having started two games in 2013. After taking some time to adapt to the Div. I game, Krumm performed well down the stretch for the Panthers. The left-hander posted a 3.24 ERA over his final nine appearances. Carlson missed 2013 after undergoing Tommy John Surgery. The left-hander appeared in three games with two starts for the Panthers in 2012, posting a 6.75 ERA over 9-1/3 innings while striking out nine before going down to injury. Two pitchers who are expected to battle for a spot in the weekend rotation after joining the Panthers from the junior college ranks are right-handers John McGillicuddy and Conor Lourey. McGillicuddy made nine starts at Louisburg College in 2013 and posted a 6-1 record with a 2.59 ERA and 40 strikeouts. Lourey started nine games for Dakota County Technical College last season and finished with a 1.27 ERA and 74 strikeouts. Three freshmen that will compete for spots in either the weekend or midweek rotations are Andre Scrubb, Cas Silber and Peter Ripke. Scrubb is a strong right-hander from Woodbridge, Va., who has a power fastball and a strong breaking ball. As a senior at CD Hylton High School, Scrubb went
Josh Spano
6-2 with a 1.57 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Silber comes to HPU from Sanderson High School in Raleigh, N.C. The right-hander features an electric arm with a fastball that can reach the low 90s and a swing-and-miss slider. Ripke joins the Panthers from Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Ind., where he went 7-3 with a 2.24 ERA as a senior. He is a strong right-hander who can throw three pitches for strikes. Both Silber and Ripke are two-way players who will also contribute at the plate and in the field. BULLPEN High Point returns several experienced arms in the bullpen this season, led by right-handers Goodman and Maloney. Goodman finished 2013 with a 3-0 record and four saves while posting a 0.37 ERA, allowing just one earned run over 24-1/3 innings. Maloney blossomed as a junior, going 2-2 with three saves. He finished with a 3.30 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched. Junior left-hander Will Resnik also returns for the Panthers this season and will be counted on as one of High Point’s first options out of the pen in the middle innings. Resnik made 14 appearances for HPU last season and finished with a 1-0 record and a 4.22 ERA. Newcomers Jordan Skavinsky, Alex Gross, Jordan Parnell and Bailey Brown will fill the roll of long relief for the Panthers in 2014. Skavinsky is a junior college transfer who joined HPU from Lake Michigan College where he posted a 4.98 ERA last season. Gross, Parnell and Brown are all freshman that will provide depth in the middle innings. Two newcomers who will join Goodman and Maloney in the backend of the bullpen are freshmen Sean Barry and Jeremy Johnson. Barry is a right-hander from Simi Valley, Calif., who has a plus breaking ball as well as a solid fastball and changeup. Johnson is a left-hander from Rocky Mount, N.C., who features three pitches and will be very tough on left-handed batters. CATCHERS While the HPU pitching staff will look very different this season; the man catching them will not be as Spano returns for his third season behind the plate. 2014 HPU Baseball was one of the Panthers’ top hitters last season, finishing with a .316 batting average, 34 runs scored and 31 RBI. Spano is a mobile catcher with a very strong arm. Last season, the catcher threw out 20 of 42 base stealers. The Panthers have good depth behind Spano with redshirt-junior Blake Hutton and freshman Mitch Reeves. Hutton appeared in 20 games last season, his first with High Point, and finished with a .233 batting average and four runs scored. Reeves comes from Winter Springs, Fla., and is a versatile defender who could also play at second or third. Junior first baseman Spencer Angelis will also move behind the plate at times during the season. INFIELD High Point returns an experienced infield this season led by returning All-Big South selection Spencer Angelis at first base. Along with Angelis, HPU returns senior Kyle Brandenburg at third and junior Dane McDermott at second. Angelis enjoyed a breakout sophomore season, hitting .319 with 29 runs scored and 26 RBI. The first baseman is a very disciplined hitter who also has the ability to drive the ball to all fields. He finished second on the team last season with 16 extra-base hits while also drawing 22 walks. Angelis is an athletic defender who can cover a good deal of ground at first. McDermott returns after hitting .317 with 19 runs scored as a sophomore last season. The second baseman acted as a second leadoff hitter for the Panthers at the bottom of the order. A rangy fielder, McDermott provides strong defence up the middle for HPU. Brandenburg bounced back from an early-season slump to finish his first year with the Panthers hitting .255 with 16 runs scored. The third baseman hit .286 in his final 16 games of the season. He is a very skilled defender who has plus range at third and a very strong arm. Junior Tony Fortier-Bensen will man the shortstop position this season, replacing 2013 starter Willie Medina who was drafted by the Washington Nationals. Fortier-Bensen joined High Point from Delgado Community College where he started 57 games in 2013 and hit .272 with 36 RBI and 38 runs scored. At 6-4, Fortier-Bensen is a tall shortstop whose long strides allow him to cover a great deal of ground in the field. Junior Mike Miedzianowki and freshman Chris Clare will provide depth at the middle infield positions for HPU this season. Miedzianowski is a talented player who battled injuries throughout his sophomore season while Clare is a very strong fielder and a difficult out at the plate. Reeves and freshman Zach Vandergrift will both see time at third base this season while Gross and sophomore Dominic Fazio will play behind Angelis at first. Vandergrift is a strong hitter with power who could also find himself in the lineup at designated hitter. Fazio hit .343 with 11 RBI as a freshman and was one of HPU’s top bats off the bench last season. OUTFIELD High Point will feature an athletic outfield this season with four players competing for time who all are capable of playing all three positions. Returning juniors Cody Manzella and Stephen Wytiaz will compete along with WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM
Prospectus & Record Book junior college transfer Brady Williamson and freshman Josh Greene for the Cody Manzella starting positions. Manzella played in 50 games with 36 starts during his sophomore campaign and finished the season hitting .344 with 25 RBI and 18 runs scored. He also led the Panthers in on-base percentage, reaching at a .444 clip. Wytiaz emerged late last season and featured prominently for HPU over the final third of the season. He appeared in 18 games for HPU and hit .406 with 11 RBI. Williamson joins HPU from Delgado Community College where he hit .359 with 39 RBI and 60 runs scored as a sophomore in 2013. The outfielder finished the season with 27 extra-base hits. Greene is a speedy fielder from Ocala, Fla. He was ranked among the top 50 outfielders in the Class of 2013 by Perfect Game. Greene will provide speed at the top of the order. Sophomores Brett Gemmell Tim Mansfield and freshman Brenden Rivera will add depth at the corner outfield spots throughout the season. Gemmell hit .269 with 12 RBI and six runs scored in his first season with the Panthers. Mansfield played his freshman season at Louisburg College and hit .357 with 19 runs scored and 15 RBI. Rivera is a strong left-handed bat from Temple Terrace, Fla., who will see time in the outfield and at designated hitter.

Craig Cozart
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Central Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009
The 2013 season is head coach Craig Cozart’s sixth at the helm of the High Point University baseball team. Cozart has a reputation for recruiting and developing pitching staffs. He has had 30 pitchers drafted in the Major League Baseball draft under his guidance, including former Panther and current Cleveland Indian Cody Allen who was drafted in 2011. Cozart was named High Point baseball’s fifth head coach in June 2008 and has led HPU to program records in wins and nearly every offensive category. He has helped guide the Panthers to their three-most winningest seasons in the program’s Div. I history and holds the HPU record for career conference wins. He needs just 11 wins to set the HPU Div. I career record for overall coaching wins. High Point won 29 games in 2013 and finished with a 15-9 record in conference play. The 15 Big South wins by the Panthers matched HPU’s Div. I single-season record and the 29 overall wins were the second most in a single season in High Point’s Div. I history. A program-best four High Point players were drafted in the Major League Draft following the 2013 season, including three pitchers: Jaime Schultz, Jacob Newberry and Sean Townsley. Schultz was selected in the 14th round, Newbery was picked in the 18th round, Townsley was picked in 25th round and shortstop Willie Medina was picked in the 31st round. HPU has won at least two games in the Big South Championship three times in five seasons under Cozart and in 2012 became the first No. 7 seed to advance to the Big South Semifinals since 2000. In 2010, Cozart led the program to its first winning season in the Division I era, posting a 31-29 mark (15-12 Big South Conference). The Panthers finished third in the Big South Tournament, the best-ever finish for HPU and set program records in

batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. Cozart joined HPU in 2009 and led the team to a 21-32 overall record and an 11-12 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over Coastal Carolina, which was ranked 14th at the time. Cozart came to HPU after 12 seasons at his alma mater, UCF, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant coach to associate head coach. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence. The Knights made five NCAA Tournament appearances during Cozart’s time and also captured four conference championships. Cozart’s coaching career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001 when the Knights boasted a program best 51-14 record. With a great eye for talent and an outstanding ability to develop pitchers, 35 of Cozart’s pitchers have signed professional contracts, including 30 in the Major League Draft. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. Bono earned the largest signing bonus in draft history for an eighth-rounder. In addition, junior lefty Jaime Douglas was a 26th-round selection of the Anaheim Angels. Fox and Bono were both named All-Americans in 2004. They formed one of the nation’s elite pitching tandems. Fox finished the year 14-2 with a 1.85
Assistant Coach Kenny Smith
ERA while Bono was 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA en route to second-team All-America status. The pair was part of a pitching staff that finished 10th in the nation in ERA with a 3.42 mark. The 2004 UCF staff also shattered the school record with 13 shutouts. It was the second pair of All-Americans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in 2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. From 1997 to 2001, Cozart saw the pitching staffs under his tutelage improve from a 33rd ranking in ERA with a 4.60 to a 10th place ranking in 1998 (3.94) to a best of 3.62 during the 2001 season, which ranked 16th nationally in ERA. An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a three-time All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teams as a player for the Black and Gold. Cozart was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks to further his education and begin his coaching career at his alma mater. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb, Jacob and Samuel.
