SEASON PREVIEW
High Point University Panthers
2010 Season Preview The 2010 High Point University baseball season will be the second under head coach Craig Cozart and his staff as they look to build on the progress they made in 2009. Cozart added 17 newcomers to the roster for this season, joining 16 returning players who helped set multiple HPU baseball records last season. In Cozart’s first season, High Point went 21-32 (11-12 Big South Conference) with two wins in the Big South Tournament, a first for the program. The Panthers had two wins over No. 14 Coastal Carolina during the regular season and defeated No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent High Point has ever beaten. The Panthers set school records in hits (605) and doubles (118). The team’s .317 batting average was its best since joining Division I and improved from .276 in 2008. PITCHING HPU returns three starting pitchers this season, losing only RJ Chlebnikow from last year’s rotation. Senior Jamie Serber is the most experienced starter, posting a 4-4 record last season and striking out 26 batters, nearly double his 14 strikeouts from 2008. Juniors Mike Caldwell and Brian Jones also return for the Panthers. Caldwell made eight starts in 2009 and four relief appearances, going 3-2 on the season. After missing his first two seasons with injuries, Jones made his first start last year and got wins over Campbell and Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Al Yevoli and freshmen
Murray White IV
Jared Avidon and Jaime Schultz will compete for the midweek slot. Juniors Corey Swickle and Mikel Rodenberg will be the experience out of the bullpen. Swickle led the Panthers in appearances last season with 20 and has the best returning ERA (4.81). Rodenberg looks to fill the closer role left by the graduation of Jeremy Berg. Rodenberg recorded 23 strikeouts in 29-1/3 innings in 2009. Also playing roles in the bullpen will be transfers Drew Dades and Kyle Starnes. Sophomore Nick Schumacher and freshmen Zach Haile, Adam Pratson, Steven Schils, Steven Roche and Wes Torrez add depth to the relief staff. CATCHING Junior Kyle Mahoney will get the start behind the plate this season, replacing AllConference honoree Billy Alvino. Mahoney started at first base last season and is the team’s leading returning hitter with a .327 average and 38 RBI. He will be backed up by freshmen Zach Tessier and Scott Glover. INFIELD The Panthers will have an entirely new infield after moving Mahoney behind the plate and graduating the other three starting infielders. Junior transfer Steve Antolik will get the job at first base after a season with Tallahassee Community College, where he was a preseason All-American and helped the team to a 2009 Panhandle Conference Championship. High Point will have freshmen up the middle with Mike Mercurio, a high school AllAmerican from Brewster, N.Y., at shortstop and Andrew Bartlett, a first-team All-State selection from Ocala, Fla., at second base. Junior Murray White IV has earned the starting job at third base after coming off the bench at multiple positions in 2009. He appeared in 13 games, playing third, second and shortstop as well as outfield, DH and relief pitcher. Sophomore Robbie Gilles will fill in at first base, with freshman Kyle Wigmore and sophomore Sal Pezzino backing up at third base and shortstop, respectively. Junior Spencer Andrews, who made 32 starts last year, could also earn time at second base this season. OUTFIELD The Panthers have plenty of experience in the outfield. Matt Gantner returns for his senior season after redshirting in 2009. He will start

in left field and hit cleanup. He is backed up by senior Pablo Rosario, who will be the regular designated hitter and lead off. Senior Max Fulginiti will patrol center this season after hitting .324 as High Point’s designated hitter last year. Fulginiti tied the Big South record with a 32-game hitting streak last season. Junior transfer Nate Roberts will bat third and start in right field. The Spring Grove, Ill., native led Parkland College to the 2009 NJCAA World Series national championship, setting the the NJCAA World Series record with a .710 batting average. He was named to the NJCAA World Series All-Tournament team and was the World Series Most Valuable Hitter as well as being named an NJCAA All-American. He spent his freshman year at Northwestern. Junior Drew Geissinger and freshman Mike Gragilla will also get time in the outfield. Geissinger is a veteran of 75 games.

CRAIG COZART
Alma Mater: Ceantral Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009 Entering his second season as head coach of the High Point University baseball team, Craig Cozart has raised expectations and excitement around the Panthers’ program. The team showed progress in its first season under Cozart, and he and his staff have brought in a highly touted recruiting class for 2010. In his first season, Cozart led the Panthers to a 21-32 overall record and an 11-12 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over Coastal Carolina, which was ranked 14th at the time. The Panthers got wins over Winthrop and Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament, the first time HPU ever won two games in the conference postseason. Cozart came to HPU following a highly successful 12-year stint at Central Florida, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant to associate head coach during his tenure. A key member of the Knight coaching staff over the past decade, he helped develop UCF into one of the nation’s elite Division I baseball programs. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence during his time with Central Florida. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. The Knights made five NCAA Tournament appear-

ances during that stretch and also captured four conference championships. Cozart’s coaching career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001. The Knights boasted a program best 51-14 record that season. In addition, each of his last three recruiting classes at UCF were ranked in the top-40 nationally. The 2008 class was ranked seventh by Perfect Game Cross Checker. With a great eye for talent and an outstanding ability to develop pitchers, 31 of Cozart’s pitchers have signed professional contracts, including 26 in the Major League Draft. In his first season at High Point, closer Jeremy Berg signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. Bono earned the largest signing bonus in draft history for an eighth-rounder. In addition, junior lefty Jaime Douglas was a 26th-round selection of the Anaheim Angels. Fox and Bono were both named All-Americans in 2004. They formed one of the nation’s elite pitching tandems. Fox finished the year 14-2 with a 1.85 ERA while Bono was 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA en route to secondteam All-America status. The pair was part of a pitching staff that finished 10th in the nation in ERA with a 3.42 mark. The 2004 UCF staff also shattered the school record with 13 shutouts. It was the second pair of All-Americans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in 2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. From 1997 to 2001, Cozart saw the pitching staffs under his tutelage improve from a 33rd ranking in ERA with a 4.60 to a 10th place ranking in 1998 (3.94) to a best of 3.62 during the 2001 season, which ranked 16th nationally in ERA.
An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a three-time All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teams as a player for the Black and Gold. Cozart was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks to further his education and begin his coaching career at his alma mater. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb (9), Jacob (7) and Samuel (3).

High Point University Panthers ASSISTANT COACH
BRYAN PETERS
Alma Mater: South Florida ’97 • First season at HPU: 2009 Bryan Peters is in his second season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on the HPU baseball staff. On the field, Peters works with the defense and serves as hitting coach for the Panthers. Peters followed Craig Cozart from Central Florida, where they worked together for two seasons as assistant coaches for the Knights. In his first season at High Point, Peters helped raise the team batting average from .276 in 2008 to .317 in 2009. Two Panthers – Billy Alvino and Alfie Wheeler – hit .400 for the season in 2009. During his two-year tenure at UCF, the Knights made dramatic improvements on offense, including finishing the 2008 season ranked 87th in the nation in batting average (.306), 76th in hits (624) and 27th in stolen bases (100). Sophomore Shane Brown, a walkon at UCF, led the team in nearly every offensive category in 2008 under Peters’ guidance. He hit a team-best .367 with nine home runs. In Peters’ first season with the Knights in 2007, the team eclipsed nearly all of its offensive totals from the previous year, including batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, stolen bases, sacrifice flies and sac bunts. The team batting average jumped from .275 to .306 in Peters’ two seasons.
Prior to Orlando, Peters spent one season as an assistant coach at Stetson. Before Stetson, Peters spent nine years as an assistant coach and two years as a player at South Florida. During his coaching career, Peters has developed 27 players that have signed professional baseball contracts, including 23 players selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Peters produced a first-round pick in 1997 when USF’s Jason Dellaero was selected 15th by the Chicago White Sox. Dellaero made his MLB debut in 1999. One of the most versatile players on the team during his playing career at USF (1995-96), Peters earned time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field and on the mound. He helped guide the Bulls to two regular season conference titles and two NCAA Regional appearances as a player and three more as a coach. In 1997, Peters spent time in Puerto Rico coaching a Roberto Clemente all-star team of 15- and 16-year olds. He has also coached at several camps and clinics and presented lectures on hitting at the Florida High School Coaches Association annual workshop. A native of Lancaster, Calif., Peters was an All-Conference performer at Antelope Valley (Calif.) Community College before transferring to USF where he earned his bachelor’s degree in speech communication in 1997.
ASSISTANT COACH
RICH WALLACE
Alma Mater: Central Florida ’04 • First season at HPU: 2009 In his second season as an assistant coach for the High Point University baseball team, Rich Wallace will serve as the catching instructor and assistant hitting coach. Wallace will also coach third base and assist with recruiting. Prior to High Point, Wallace served as volunteer assistant coach at Central Florida from 2005-08. He worked alongside HPU head coach Craig Cozart for four years at UCF and with assistant coach Bryan Peters for two. In his first season at HPU, Wallace worked with catcher Billy Alvino, who was named a Johnny Bench semifinalist. Alvino hit .400 for High Point before signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers organization. At UCF, Wallace assisted with the hitters, worked with the catchers and played an active role with the summer baseball camps. He began his coaching career as a student assistant with the 6
Knights in 2004. Under Wallace’s tutelage, three Knights were named Johnny Bench semifinalists: Andrew Butera in 2004, Ryan Bono in 2006 and Robert Lara in 2008. He also coached a pair of All-Americans in Dee Brown and Clay Timpner. Timpner made his Major League debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2008. Prior to coaching, Wallace was a four-year letterwinner at UCF from 2000-03. As a player for the Knights, Wallace was part of three NCAA Tournament teams. Wallace’s teams also won three Atlantic Sun regular season championships and a pair of Atlantic Sun tournament titles. In 2001, he attended the Yes Clinic in conjunction with the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. During his career at Central Florida, Wallace garnered third-team All-Atlantic Sun honors as a freshman and was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. He set the school’s all-time mark in being hit by a pitch, both in career and single season totals. A native of Orlando, Fla., Wallace earned his bachelor’s degree from UCF in liberal studies in 2004. 2010 HPU Panthers

DANIEL LATHAM
Alma Mater: Tulane ’07 • First season at HPU: 2009 Daniel Latham is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach for the High Point University baseball team. Latham assists head coach Craig Cozart with developing the Panther pitching corps. He is also the first base coach and gameday bullpen coach for the Panthers. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Latham is primarily responsible for the Panther baseball camps and handling the daily maintenance of the program in areas like travel and academics. Latham, who was named a volunteer assistant at High Point in July 2008, began his coaching career with the Panthers following a one-year professional playing stint in the Minnesota Twins organization. A four-year relief pitcher for Tulane, Latham finished his career as the all-time saves leader in Green Wave and Conference USA history with 43. He ranks second all-time at Tulane with 122 appearances on the mound, including a school-best 121 in relief. Latham’s career totals also place him among the NCAA career leaders in those categories ranking sixth in saves, 15th in appearances and ninth in relief appearances. During his playing career, Latham recorded three top-10 single season appearance marks for the Green Wave while also posting three of the program’s seven double-digit save totals in a season. He boasted a 13-10 career record with a 4.34 ERA at Tulane in 203 innings
of work. He finished with 167 strikeouts and allowed just 40 walks in four seasons. As a sophomore, Latham led C-USA and finished 15th in nation in saves with 13 while helping the Green Wave to the 2005 College World Series. Coy O. Williard Stadium Coy O. Williard Stadium was dedicated in 2007, making High Point University’s baseball facility one of the best in the Big South. Erath Field’s natural-grass surface has long been the home of HPU baseball, and it has undergone major renovations since 2001, including a new infield, irrigation system and scoreboard. With the dedication of Williard Stadium in 2007, additions included 501 custom purple seats, a full press box

and hospitality suite, restrooms and a concession stand. Lights were also added in 2007, allowing HPU to play its first official night games. In Januray 2009, the field was upgraded with a new warning track and a Field Turf halo with the HPU logo behind home plate. In preparation for the 2010 season, the fence in right center field was lowered to allow spectators to watch the game from the outfield.

High Point University President
Dr. Nido Qubein
Dr. Nido Qubein believes in creating significance – both in his own life and in the lives he touches. He is a man of diverse interests and talents, and uses the life God has given him to create a legacy that reaches far and wide. Dr. Qubein came to the United States as a teenager with little knowledge of English, no contacts and only $50 in his pocket. His life has been an amazing success story. Having graduated from High Point University in 1970, it is poetic that Dr. Qubein would be pursued as its seventh president in 2005. He immediately began a campaign to transform the university, with $300 million being invested in academic programs, student life and facilities. HPU has completed or is constructing 15 new buildings and two stadiums, in addition to renovating 27 other structures on campus. That includes all athletic facilities, with the construction of the Steele Center, Vert Stadium and Willard Stadium, and the renovation of the Millis Center. The HPU campus has grown from 90 acres to 180 acres. Most recently, the University Center, the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce and the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication were opened to students. Dr. Qubein also teaches a required course called The President’s Seminar on Life Skills, teaching freshmen how to develop such skills as self-esteem, leadership, communication and time management. Dr. Qubein is the recipient of the highest awards given for professional speakers including the Cavett (known as the Oscar of professional speaking), the Speakers Hall of Fame, Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans and The Order of the Long Leaf Pine (North Carolina’s highest civilian honor) and Sales and Marketing International’s Ambassador of Free Enterprise. Toastmasters International named him the Top Business and Commerce Speaker and awarded him the Golden Gavel Medal. He served as president of the National Speakers Association, which has a membership of 4,000 professionals, and is the founder of the National Speakers Association Foundation, where the highest award for Philanthropy is named for him. Dr. Qubein has been the recipient of many honors including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and induction into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for business leadership. Dr. Qubein’s business savvy led him to help start a bank in 1986 and today he serves on the board and chairs the executive committee of BB&T, a Fortune 500 financial corporation with $130 billion in assets and 30,000 employees. He is also chairman of Great Harvest Bread Company, which has 218 stores in 42 states, and he serves on the board of La-Z-Boy Corporation, one of the world’s largest and most recognized furniture retailers. He is a former board member of the YMCA of the USA, which oversees 2,600 YMCAs across the country. Dr. Qubein has written a dozen books and recorded scores of audio and video learning programs. His books are translated in 20 languages and sold worldwide. He is an active speaker and consultant addressing business and professional groups. His foundation provides scholarships to 48 deserving young people each year. To-date the Qubein Foundation has granted more than 600 scholarships, worth over $4 million. 2010 HPU Panthers

ACADEMICS AT HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY The most important thing to consider in choosing a college or university is the institution’s expectation of its faculty. Good professors are actively involved in both teaching and scholarly activity, such as research, but institutions and their faculties tend to give priority to one or to the other. In a recently completed study, the prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching concluded that often, at the research institutions, “undergraduates are seriously neglected,” in part because they are often taught by graduate students. By contrast, at High Point, you will be taught by career teachers who care about students. Currently, 78 percent of the faculty have doctorates or other terminal degrees; others have one or more master’s degrees. Although High Point University is an academic institution, your education is not complete if, in the process of learning, you have not inculcated moral values without which success in life and work is at risk. Therefore, the University emphasizes the teaching of ethics across the curriculum, and all degree candidates must successfully complete at least one course in ethics. Options include Business Ethics; Christian Ethics; Ethics in Professionalism for Accounting; Ethical Conflicts in Information Technology; Environmental Ethics; Ethical Traditions; Faith, Ethics, and Wholeness; Families, Values, and Ethics; and Social Ethics.
“At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in a inspiring environment with caring people”

2010 Baseball CRAIG KEILITZ
Craig Keilitz was named High Point University’s Athletic Director in January 2008 and, since then, the HPU Athletic Department has undergone unprecedented change. With Keilitz’s guidance, High Point Athletics has undergone a complete evaluation of all aspects of the department and its various programs with goals of operational efficiency, extraordinary service and championship performance on the top of his list. An energetic and enthusiastic leader, Keilitz’s first major project was a $2 million inside renovation of the Millis Athletic Center, which included a new playing floor, all new chair-back seats throughout the arena, a fourth video board, a new center hung scoreboard and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. High Point University recently secured a $2 million donation toward a top-of-the-line indoor baseball training facility. Keilitz continues to assess HPU’s athletic facilities in order to provide the best resources for the Panthers’ student-athletes and coaches. The Panthers have added women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport, and HPU’s first season of competition will be 2011. In his short tenure, Keilitz has made coaching staff changes in men’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer and volleyball, and has added several new members to the administrative team. The change in the Athletic Department is already paying dividends, as High Point University recorded its highest-ever finish – third place – in the Big South Conference Sasser Cup standings during the 2008-09 athletic season.
Keilitz joined HPU following a long stint at Wake Forest University, where he served as an Associate Athletic Director. Keilitz began at Wake Forest in 1996 when he was hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. After two years, Athletic Director Ron Wellman promoted Keilitz to Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations, where he supervised the NCAA compliance office, the sports medicine and equipment operations as well as strength and conditioning and event management. In 2001, Keilitz was promoted again as Wake Forest’s Associate Athletic Director, supervising the marketing and promotions, media relations and facilities operations while also overseeing the baseball and women’s volleyball programs. Under Keilitz’s supervision, Wake Forest football set season attendance records in five of six seasons. Keilitz started his career in college athletics at the University of Michigan in 1993 and was promoted to Director of Compliance in 1995. A native of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Keilitz earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in marketing from Central Michigan University in 1991. He was a member of the Chippewas baseball team. Keilitz received his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. Keilitz resides in High Point with his wife Jane, who works as a physician’s assistant at Johnson Neurological Clinic in High Point. His daughter, Lauren, is a junior at High Point University in 2009-10.

JARED MICKLOS Director of Compliance Ask before you act! If you are unsure regarding your involvement with our prospects or current student-athletes, please contact HPU Director of Compliance Jared Micklos at (336) 841-9396 or jmicklos@ highpoint.edu.
High Point University’s Athletics Compliance office monitors and verifies compliance with all NCAA, Big South Conference and University requirements. The office educates not only the athletics staff, administration and student-athletes, but also HPU faculty, staff and administration as well as other individuals and entities with athletic interests. HPU is committed and compelled to the principle of institutional control in the operation of its athletics department in a way that is consistent within the rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big South and HPU. Everyone involved with High Point Athletics, both inside and outside the University, has a role and responsibility to operate with accountability and integrity when it comes to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. Communication is the key when it comes to understanding how each person fits within the structure of the NCAA’s rules and regulations. Any questions regarding NCAA rules and regulations, especially those dealing with prospects and student-athletes, should be directed toward Director of Compliance Jared Micklos at (336) 841-9396 or jmicklos@highpoint.edu. The HPU Athletic program needs your help and support, so please cooperate to ensure success for the Panthers, on and off the field. NCAA rules and regulations for “Representatives of Athletics Interests” The High Point University Athletic Department in conjunction with the HPU Compliance Office strives for honor and dignity of fair play and the highest standards associated with intercollegiate athletic programs. “Representatives of Athletics Interests,” which include alumni, boosters, and friends of High Point University all have a key role in maintaining our standards under the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It’s easy to form relationships with studentathletes as fans watch and cheer them on in their competitions. Building these types of relationships is not only exciting for the fans but also important in the lives of the student-athletes. There are many NCAA rules and regulations regarding the eligibility of student-athletes. Ask before you act! Make sure that anything you provide for a student-athlete is within the NCAA’s guidelines. Compliance Jared Micklos at (336) 841-9396 or jmicklos@highpoint.edu. Some Helpful Facts Only coaches and athletic department staff members are permitted to be involved in recruiting... Alumni, friends and other “representatives of athletics interests” (usually boosters) who are not employed by the University are not permitted to contact a prospect or members of the prospect’s family by letter, telephone or in-person for the purpose of soliciting their participation in the athletic program. High Point University faculty members are allowed to have contact with prospects, but only while on the campus during unofficial or official visits. A student-athlete becomes a prospect... A student-athlete becomes a prospect when he or she begins ninth grade classes. Before the ninth grade, a student-athlete becomes a prospect if a college provides any financial aid or other benefits to the student-athlete (or their relatives or friends) that the college does not provide to all prospective students. A student-athlete is considered a “recruited” prospect at a particular college if any coach or representative of the school’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches a studentathlete or any member of their family about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause a student-athlete to become a recruited prospect are: • Providing the student-athlete with an official visit • Placing more than one telephone call to the student-athlete or any other member of their family • Visiting the student-athlete or any other member of their family anywhere other than on the college’s campus This information was prepared by the High Point Athletic Compliance Office and is presented to you as a guide to assist you with any questions you may have. There are many more NCAA rules and regulations that are not contained here. ACADEMICS & SERVICE Academic Support The Academic Support Program works to provide student-athletes with the resources to excel academically during their participation in intercollegiate athletics. The services offered by the Academic Support Program seek to reinforce the University’s overall mission to promote intellectual and personal growth. Student-athletes have the same academic responsibilities as all other students, but they also must devote significant time and energy to athletics participation. The Department of Athletics Academic Support Program offers various services to assist student-athletes with these responsibilities; however all student-athletes are ultimately personally responsible for following a course of academic study that will lead to a degree. HPU’s Student-Athlete Learning Assistance Center in the Steele Center gives all Panther student-athletes access to top-notch academic resources and amenities. The center is equipped with multiple desktop computer stations, wireless internet capabilities, a small group work area and tutor offices. The center also serves as the location for all of HPU’s study hall sessions. CHAMPS/Life Skills The NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is an educational program designed to enhance the welfare and promote the personal development of student-athletes. High Point University Athletics seeks to benefit the student-athletes by focusing upon their unique academic, athletic, and emotional objectives and needs. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Commitment Statements are as follows: • Commitment to Academic Excellence: To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletic Excellence: To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete. • Commitment to Personal Development: To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. • Commitment to Career Development: To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. • Commitment to Service: To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

The categories are based upon Life Skills commitment areas: • Being an active role model and leader • Working as a team • Encouragement for fellow athletes • Overall academic achievement The Competition Cup enables and encourages investment in the self (academic performance category), fellow student-athletes (athletes supporting athletics, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Student-Athlete Mentors, and athletic performance categories), and community outreach. The team that has the highest total at the end of the academic year prevails as the winner. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a group made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each of High Point’s 15 athletic teams have a representative on the HPU SAAC.
Competition Cup A critical component of the Life Skills Program is the Competition Cup, a competitive contest among the High Point University athletic teams. Student-athletes compete on behalf of www.highpointpanthers.com

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING High Point University offers a comprehensive strength & conditioning program that provides a combination of strength and speed in a safe manner that will enable HPU student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest, and most explosive collegiate athletes in the nation. The Panthers’ strength & conditioning program is led by head coach Tim Teefy and assistant coach Mike Rhoades, who both joined HPU in 2009. The profession of strength & conditioning is constantly changing and evolving, and Teefy stays on the cutting edge and uses the most innovative practices available. Using any means necessary within the scope of strength & conditioning that will improve the performance of the athlete in a positive manner is what High Point University strength & conditioning is all about. The following six areas are the focal points of High Point University’s strength & conditioning program:
TIM TEEFY
• STRENGTH: Olympic lifting techniques are MIKE RHOADES one of the most widely used by strength & conditioning coaches all over the country. These lifts teach the athlete advanced movements while putting the muscular skeletal system under stress and creating positive adaptations. This will mirror the stress the athlete undergoes during competition. • POWER & EXPLOSION: Power is the ability to generate large amounts of force at a high rate of speed. Explosiveness is the ability to generate power in a short amount of time. These two principles can be applicable to every athlete regardless of sport or position. • FLEXIBILITY: Static, dynamic and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation are the three main components of flexibility. Using these three methods helps prevent injury, improve muscle activation, prevents delayed onset muscle soreness, and increases range of motion. • SPEED & AGILITY: Speed training is used to enhance the athlete’s ability to get from point A to B as fast as possible. It involves teaching the athlete proper body mechanics to optimize sprinting performance. Agility is the ability to own a certain amount of space around you. An athlete must be able to react as quickly as possible in all directions for any type of situation. Spatial awareness and muscular coordination play major roles in agility training. • CORE: Core training in recent years has become a major part of strength training for the athlete. “If you want to be strong on the outside, you must be strong on the inside.” The core consists of 36 muscles in and around the abdominal area and lower back region. • NUTRITION: A training body can only perform as long as it’s getting an adequate supply of fuel. An athlete’s calorie intake is under high demand during a full training cycle. Athletes need adequate calories from all major food groups and minerals that will keep the athlete at optimal training performance. High Point University strength & conditioning utilizes weight rooms in both the Steele Center and Millis Center, and HPU’s coaches and student-athletes also have access to the Panthers’ practice fields as well as Belk Track for strength & conditioning activities. 46

ATHLETIC TRAINING High Point University is committed to providing the best opportunities for its student-athletes, both on and off the field, and one of the most important aspects of any quality athletic department is its athletic training program. Headed by Matt Schooler, HPU’s top-notch athletic training staff handles the day-to-day, minute-byminute demands placed on the human body. The responsibilities of HPU’s athletic trainers are key to player development. Schooler and each of HPU’s assistant athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. With locations in both the Millis Center and Steele Center, HPU’s athletic trainers provide comprehensive sports medicine services for HPU’s intercollegiate athletes as well as visiting team athletes, including injury prevention, support and rehabilitation for injured athletes, as well as medical emergency management. All of HPU’s athletic trainers are qualified to react to spontaneous, on-the-field injuries, manage and treat them, and, when it is necessary, follow through on athletes’ comprehensive rehabilitation programs under a physician’s direction. The coaching staffs of the Panthers’ 15-sport, women’s and men’s athletics program rely heavily on the input of Schooler and his staff as they prepare lineups for games and analyze depth charts for future seasons. RYAN HOLLEMAN Baseball Athletic Trainer Ryan Holleman joined the High Point Athletic Training staff in June 2009. Holleman assists in all aspects of HPU’s athletic training, and specifically covers baseball. Holleman completed his master’s degree at Nebraska in Educational Administration in 2009. While with the Huskers, Holleman served as the primary athletic trainer for baseball while assisting with the football program. Holleman attended Western Carolina University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. While with the Catamounts he worked with the baseball team as well as the UNC Asheville women’s soccer team. He also completed an internship at the University of Virginia, where he worked with the women’s lacrosse team that competed in the 2007 NCAA Championship.
