2010-11 Season Preview With five position starters and the core of the pitching staff returning, the High Point University baseball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2011 Big South Preseason Poll. Under head coach Craig Cozart, HPU will need contributions from the team’s six newcomers to compete against some of the best competition in the country as the Panthers will face five teams that went to last year’s NCAA Tournament. In 2010 Cozart led HPU to its first winning season since 1990. The Panthers finished the 2010 season with a 31-29 record (15-12 Big South) setting program records in overall and conference wins. HPU shattered nearly every offensive record and finished the regular season ranked nationally in the top 10 in hit by pitch and on-base percentage. Three Panthers were named to the All-Big South team and junior Nate Roberts was the Big South Conference Player of the Year. Matt Gantner and Jaime Schultz joined Roberts in collecting All-Conference honors. STARTING ROTATION The starting rotation will feature a newcomer to High Point, but someone who is very familiar with Cozart’s coaching style. Junior Cody Allen joins the pitching staff after playing for Cozart at UCF in 2008. Allen, who spent last season at St. Petersburg Community College, was a drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the Steve Antolik 16th round of the 2010 MLB Draft and is expected to be the Friday night starter for the Panthers. Sophomore Jared Avidon’s steady improvement during the fall season secured him a spot in the starting rotation after a solid freshman season. Avidon went 3-1 in his rookie year, striking out 35 in 53-2/3 innings. Senior Corey Swickle will make the move from the bullpen to the starting rotation for his final season. In 2010 he led the team with 27 appearances, pitching 45-1/3 innings with 54 strikeouts. With 64 career appearances he is sixth in the HPU record books, but only two of them have come as a starter.
Murray White IV
Zach Haile, Steven Schils and Mike Caldwell will be options to start the midweek games. BULLPEN The Panthers have an experienced bullpen returning for the 2011 season led by senior Mikel Rodenberg and junior Drew Dades. Rodenberg’s eight saves last year are the third most in a season in HPU history. Dades missed the first half of the 2010 season but became one of the Panthers go-to relievers down the stretch. He went 2-0 in 13 appearances, allowing nine earned runs in 16 innings of work. He pitched four innings of relief against Liberty in the Big South Tournament, allowing one unearned run, to earn his second win of the season. Junior lefties Al Yevoli and Nick Schumacher and Wigmore are all key pieces in the bullpen. Steven Roche, Adam Pratson and Mike Petilli add depth to the relief staff. The 2011 squad has five players who will pitch and play the field. Freshmen John Maloney and Preston Packrall, sophomore Kyle Wigmore, junior Ryan Retz and senior Spencer Andrews will all be two-way players for the Panthers. Andrews was a relief pitcher who also played second base, third base and spent time in the outfield last year. CATCHING Senior Kyle Mahoney returns as HPU’s starting catcher. Last season he threw out 37 attempted base stealers while hitting .282 with six home runs and 46 RBI. He will be backed up by sophomores Zach Tessier and Scott Glover as well as freshman John Maloney. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM
HIGH POINT 2011 HPU Baseball INFIELD There will be a pair of familiar faces up the middle for the Panthers with senior Murray White IV and sophomore Mike Mercurio returning to second base and shortstop, respectively. White hit .353 with six homers and 55 runs scored last season. Mercurio was solid defensively throughout his rookie campaign for HPU and hit his first career home run in the Big South Tournament against Coastal Carolina. Mercurio hit .533 in the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. Senior Drew Geissinger took over third base in the middle of the 2010 season and will reprise the role in his final year. Geissinger is a versatile player who could see time in the outfield opening the door for Wigmore or Packrall to get time at third. Junior Sal Pezzino is the likely starter at first base this season. He appeared in 44 games last season with 12 starts and hit .389 as a pinch-hitter. Classmate Robbie Gilles will provide another option at first base while serving primarily as the designated hitter OUTFIELD HPU will have an entirely new outfield in 2011 after losing Big South Player of the Year Nate Roberts, first team All-Conference honoree Matt Gantner and Max Fulginiti. The trio all hit over .360 and combined to miss just one game all season.
Prospectus & Record Book Roberts signed with the Minnesota Twins after he was drafted in the fifth round while Gantner and Fulginiti graduated. Senior Steve Antolik will move from first base to his natural position in right field for his final season. He hit .319 with six home runs and 57 RBI as a junior and had the longest hitting streak of any Panther in 2010, hitting in 14 straight. Ryan Retz, a transfer from Pima Community College, will patrol centerfield this season and, is another versatile player for the Panthers. The sophomore can also play first base and is an option in the bullpen. Andrews earned the starting job in left field during the fall season after serving as a utility player in his first three years. Last season he saw time in the outfield and at second and third while serving as a key reliever for the Panthers. Freshman Maverick Miles and sophomore Mike Gragilla will also compete for time in the outfield.

Craig Cozart
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Central Florida ’96 • First season at HPU: 2009
Craig Cozart is in his third season as the head coach of the High Point University baseball team after leading the Panthers to huge improvements over the last two years. This includes HPU’s first winning season since 1990 last year. With a 31-29 (15-12 Big South) record, Cozart’s 2010 squad set program records in overall and conference wins. The Panthers finished third in the Big South Tournament, the best finish for HPU and set school records in batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. In 2009, Cozart led the Panthers to a 21-32 overall record and an 11-12 record in the Big South Conference. The Panthers had a win over No. 4 North Carolina, the highest ranked opponent HPU has ever beaten, and two wins over No. 14 Coastal Carolina. The Panthers got wins over Winthrop and Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament, the first time HPU ever won two games in the conference postseason. Cozart came to HPU following a highly successful 12-year stint at Central Florida, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant to associate head coach. At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455274 overall mark during his 12 seasons. UCF made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that stretch and also captured four

conference championships. Cozart’s career at UCF featured six top-25 final national rankings, including a No. 7 finish in 2001. In addition, each of his last three recruiting classes at UCF were ranked in the top-40 nationally. With a great eye for talent and ability to develop pitchers, 31 of Cozart’s pitchers have signed professional contracts, including 26 in the Major League Draft. In his first season at HPU, closer Jeremy Berg signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization. Cozart guided the 2008 UCF pitching staff to a No. 4 national ranking in strikeouts per nine innings after recording 537 strikeouts for the year, the second most in program history. Three pitchers from Cozart’s 2004 staff were drafted, including Matt Fox in the first round by the Minnesota Twins and Kyle Bono in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox. In addition, Jaime Douglas was a 26thround selection of the Anaheim Angels. Fox and Bono were both named AllAmericans in 2004. They formed one of the nation’s elite pitching tandems. Fox finished the year 14-2 with a 1.85 ERA while Bono was 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA en route to secondteam All-America status. The pair was part of a pitching staff that finished 10th in the
Assistant Coach Rich Wallace
nation in ERA with a 3.42 mark. It was the second pair of All-Americans Cozart coached at UCF after Justin Pope and Jason Arnold earned the honor in 2001. Pope went on to be drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round, while Arnold was a second-round pick of the New York Yankees. An outstanding pitcher in his own right at UCF from 1993-96, Cozart earned second team All-Atlantic Sun honors in 1995 and was a three-time All-Academic team member. Cozart led the Knights in wins for consecutive seasons in 1995 (10) and 1996 (7) and finished his career second all-time in UCF wins (24), fourth in appearances (65), fourth in starts (40) and fourth in strikeouts (204). Cozart was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and three conference champion teams. He was drafted in the 45th round by the Atlanta Braves in 1995 and again in the 28th round by the San Francisco Giants in 1996 but decided to forego the professional ranks to begin his coaching career at his alma mater. Cozart earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in education in December of 1996 from UCF. He is married to the former Michelle Cutright, a UCF volleyball standout during the 1990s. They are the proud parents of three boys, Caleb (10), Jacob (8) and Samuel (4).
