UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book

2010-11 Season Preview

The High Point University men’s basketball team Rk. Team (first) Points enters the 2010-11 season with high expectations 1. Coastal Carolina (10) 206 after head coach Scott Cherry led the Panthers to a 2. Winthrop (5) 191 3. UNC Asheville (4) 181 six-win improvement in 2009-10. Now in his second 4. Presbyterian (4) 159 season, Cherry’s squad returns nine players, including 5. High Point 139 three starters, to go along with seven newcomers. 6. Liberty (1) 124 Topping HPU’s roster is Big South Preseason 7. Charleston Southern 115 8. VMI 85 Player of the Year Nick Barbour, the league’s top 9. Radford 83 returning scorer and an All-Big South first teamer 10. Gardner-Webb 32 as a sophomore last season. Barbour will be flanked by a pair of returning starters in senior point guard Preseason Tehran Cox and sophomore forward Corey Law. All-Conference Senior forward Earnest Bridges, senior guard David Nick Barbour, Campbell and sophomore guard Jairus Simms also Jr., Guard, High Point got significant playing time last season. Chad Gray The new Panthers include one transfer – junior Sr., Forward, Coastal Carolina guard Shay Shine – as well as freshman guards Justin Al’Lonzo Coleman Cheek, Xavier Martin and Cameron Solomon and Jr., Center, Presbyterian College freshman forwards Travis Elliott, Georges Massoda Jamarco Warren and Du’Vaughn Maxwell. Cherry and his staff beat Sr., Guard, Charleston So. out the likes of Tulane, James Madison, VCU, Illinois Austin Kenon State and Murray State for the seven additions. Sr., Guard, VMI The Panthers posted a 15-15 overall record and 10-8 Big South record in Cherry’s first season, a Preseason Player of the Year major improvement from the 9-21 and 4-14 marks Nick Barbour, the year before. The change came in large part from Jr., Guard, High Point HPU’s up-tempo style, as the Panthers increased their scoring production in Big South games from 62.5 to 72.3 points per game and HPU’s scoring margin in conference games Earnest Bridges improved by 5.0 points. The Panthers’ outside game was also a large part of their success, as they ranked second in the league in three-pointers and shot 36.0 percent from downtown. BACKCOURT Head coach Scott Cherry will have plenty of options in the backcourt this season with the return of leading scorer Nick Barbour, his point guard tandem of senior Tehran Cox and sophomore Jairus Simms, reliable senior David Campbell and also Joe Stroman and Adam Hall providing depth. Add four 2

newcomers to the mix and there will be a lot of healthy competition for playing time. Last season, Barbour dominated games at times with his outside shot and over the course of the season showed an ability to get to the basket and draw fouls. The league’s preseason MVP averaged 18.9 points, second only to Radford’s departed big man Art Parakhouski (21.1 ppg). Barbour averaged 2.5 treys per game and led the league at 40.1 percent from three-point range. When league play got going, Barbour averaged 6.9 free-throw attempts per game and drained 74.2 percent of them, best in Big South play for anyone who made at least 90. He scored over 20 points in 14 games, including two 30-plus point games in 2009-10. Cox started 29 of 30 games at the point in 2009-10, leading HPU and ranking seventh in the Big South with 3.4 assists per game. He posted five steals in two different games and used his speed to score the game-winning layup as time ran out in a road win over Presbyterian. When Cox wasn’t on the court, it was usually Simms directing the offense. Simms was very reliable with the ball, posting a 1.55 assist-to-turnover ratio, and could shoot as well, setting a new HPU record of 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from three-point range. Campbell was steady and versitile off the bench last season, averaging 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds while playing every position. A veteran of 88 games, Campbell had a great game against UNC Asheville in the 2010 Big South Tournament, scoring 10 points with a season-high seven rebounds. Stroman and Hall provided depth and competition for HPU last season, getting into 12 games each. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

The Panthers’ four backcourt additions provide an array of abilities and each will challenge for playing time right away. A junior transfer, Shay Shine has the most experience after starting for two years at Iowa Western, where he earned All-Region honors in 2008-09 after averaging 16.1 points and 5.8 rebounds. An excellent outside shooter and defender, Shine helped lead Iowa Western to a 22-8 record last year. He was an All-State selection out of Arcadia High School in Florida. Another addition from the Sunshine State, Xavier Martin gives the Panthers a speedy point guard who can score and defend. Martin averaged 23.4 points and 5.2 assists per game as a senior at Miramar High School last season. He scored over 30 points in six games his senior year, includnig a 47-point performance. Freshman Justin Cheek joins HPU from nearby Charlotte, where he averaged 16 points as a senior and set Ardrey Kell records for points in a career, season and game as well as three-pointers in a game. Another excellent outside shooter, Cameron Solomon joins the Panthers from Lovejoy High School in Georgia where he put up an incredible 25 points, five rebounds and five assists per game and was named Clayton County Player of the Year as a senior. HPU lost one starter in the backcourt – Eugene Harris – who graduated as HPU’s all-time leading three-point shooter and 13th-leading scorer. FRONTCOURT High Point University returns three forwards to go along with three freshman post players for the 2010-11 season. The Panthers will look to sophomore Corey Law to be a leader this year after WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

he started every game in 2009-10, as well as senior Earnest Bridges, who has played in 83 games over the past three seasons for HPU. After a redshirt season, Law took the court last year and averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 rebounds. He got stronger and stronger as the season went on, averaging 11.0 points and 8.3 rebounds over the last 14 games. That stretch included nine double-digit scoring efforts and five double-doubles with a careerbest 18 points in a win over Presbyterian. Bridges came off the bench in every game in 2009-10, averaging 3.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.9 minutes. He stepped in with great performances when called upon, including a nine-point, eight rebound effort in a win over Liberty and 13 points in HPU’s upset win over Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Moses Burgess provided competition in practice and played in six games last year. Head coach Scott Cherry will look for freshmen Travis Elliott, Georges Massoda and Du’Vaughn Maxwell to contend for playing time right away in the frontcourt. Elliott is a true big man at 6-foot-8, 245 pounds and HPU will look for him to create space under the basket, score and rebound. He averaged 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds for Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., which was ranked as high as No. 14 in the nation during Elliott’s junior year. Massoda is a big-bodied, athletic forward who is developing at a high rate. Originally from Cameroon, Massoda joined Forsyth Country Day in Winston-Salem for the past two years, helping the team to the conference title last season. Maxwell is a hybrid forward with range out to the three-point line and is also a good shot blocker. He averaged 18.4 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.4 blocks to earn All-State honors at Petersburg High School in Virginia last year. His team went 30-1 last year, losing its only game at the buzzer in the state championship. The Panthers will have to make up for the loss of last year’s starting center, Cruz Daniels, who finished his collegiate career as High Point’s all-time blocks Dave Campbell leader.

Scott Cherry

Head Coach • Alma Mater: North Carolina ’93 • First season at HPU: 2009-10

Head coach Scott Cherry has the High Point University men’s basketball team poised for success in his second season leading the Panthers in 2010-11. Cherry and his staff led HPU to a 15-15 overall record and 10-8 Big South mark in his first season in 2009-10, a stark improvement over the team’s 9-21 overall record and 4-14 league mark the year before their arrival. Cherry brought an outstanding history of success to HPU. He was a member of four Sweet 16 squads and won a national title as a player at North Carolina before he compiled a 210-107 record over 10 seasons as an assistant coach. The 11th head coach in the history of HPU, Cherry and his staff brought in a very strong initial recruiting class that draws from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. Nine returning players along with the new additions give the Panthers depth that will help them continue their upward ascent. The Panthers’ six-win improvement last season was the second-largest improvement in the conference. HPU went 12-1 at home and featured All-Big South first-team honoree Nick Barbour. Cherry stresses an upbeat style of play reminiscent of his coach at UNC, Hall of Famer Dean Smith. Cherry’s players push the ball up the floor, move the ball quickly and play pressure defense. The results were obvious in HPU’s first season under Cherry, as the team’s scoring offense improved from 64.4 to 72.3 points per game, the team’s scoring margin in conference games improved by 5.0 points and HPU featured the conference’s leader in three-point percentage in overall games (Barbour) and in conference games (Eugene Harris).

During his one season as head coach, 10 seasons as an assistant coach and four seasons as a collegiate player, Cherry has never had a losing record and his teams have made 10 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournaments and three NIT trips. Under Smith at North Carolina, Cherry and assistant coach Brian Reese were members of UNC’s 1993 NCAA Championship team. Cherry joined the High Point University program after serving as assistant coach to Darrin Horn for two seasons – first at Western Kentucky and, when Horn became head coach at South Carolina, Cherry moved on to become top assistant with the Gamecocks. Alongside Horn at South Carolina in 2008-09, Cherry played an integral part in helping lead the the Gamecocks to a 21-10 finish that included a Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title and an appearance in the NIT. In 2007-08 at Western Kentucky, Cherry assisted the Hilltoppers to a 29-7 mark, a Sun Belt Conference title, a No. 23 final national ranking and a historic trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 as a No. 12 seed. Prior to joining the Western Kentucky staff, Cherry spent seven seasons at George Mason from 1999-2002 and 2003-07 working alongside head coach Jim Larranaga. During his tenure at Mason, the Patriots earned four postseason bids, including two NCAA Tournament appearances, and went 140-79 (.639) overall and an 82-40 (.672) in the Colonial Athletic Association. George Mason won the CAA regular-season title in 2005-06, earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and made it all the way to the Final Four as an 11th-seed. On their

way to the Final Four, George Mason upset Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and No. 1 seed Connecticut. The Patriots finally lost to eventual national champion Florida and finished the season with a program-best 27-8 record, including a 15-3 CAA mark. The Patriots advanced to the NIT in 2004, earning a pair of victories. During his first stint with the Patriots from 1999-2002, Cherry helped lead the squad to three straight first- or second-place finishes in the CAA along with a 36-14 mark (.720 winning percentage) in league play. George Mason won the CAA Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and earned a bid to the 2002 NIT. Cherry spent the 2002-03 season at Tennessee Tech, helping the team to 20-wins and the Ohio Valley Conference title game. Cherry began his coaching career in 1997-98, serving as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach at Bishop McGuinness (N.C.) High School. He then spent one season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Middle Tennessee State University. A 1993 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in business administration, Cherry earned four letters for the Tar Heels basketball team and served as team captain as a senior. UNC went 107-33 in Cherry’s four seasons, going to the Sweet 16 every year, the Final Four in 1991 and 1993 and winning the 1993 NCAA title. Upon graduation, Cherry played one season of professional basketball for the AEL Basketball Club in Limassol, Cyprus. Cherry is a native of Ballston Spa, N.Y. He and his wife, Cortney, have one son, Brody.
