Prospectus & Record Book

2010 Season Preview The High Point University men’s soccer team enters the 2010 season as the favorites in the Big South Conference. The Panthers were selected first in the Big South Preseason Poll, receiving four first place votes and 72 points. It is the first time in team history that HPU has been picked as preseason No. 1. Junior forward Karo Okiomah was also selected as High Point’s first ever Big South Preseason Player of the Year after finishing tied for the team lead in points in 2009 with 14 points on five goals and four assists. The Panthers return 10 starters and five of its top six scorers from a squad which went 9-7-2 in 2009, the best record in HPU’s Division I history. High Point also posted its best-ever Big South record with a 5-1-2 mark and second-place finish in the conference, the team’s highest in its 11-year history in the Big South. Midfielder Shawn Sloan was named Big South Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Big South after scoring a team-best six goals and finishing tied for the team lead with 14 points. Three players joined Sloan on the All-Big South teams. Matt Tuttle, the only graduating sterter from 2009, was named to the first team after finishing the season with a team-best six assists to go along with four goals. Two freshmen, Fejiro Okiomah and Todd Ray were named second-team All-Big South. Okiomah finished the season with four goals and three assists while Ray started all 18 games for HPU in central defense. Sloan and Okiomah were both named to the All-Freshman team along with Patrick Donahue who started every game as a defensive midfielder. “I am anxious in a good way about this season,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “I think we can really do some good things this season. I really like this team. We have good chemistry and a good competitive culture with the way that we train. I believe that the foundation we have laid with all the hard work we put in last spring and over the summer will help carry us through this season.”

Goalkeepers

This season the HPU goal will once again be guarded by junior Michael Chesler. Chesler started all 18 games for High Point last season and tied the HPU DI single-season record with five shutouts. A starter in each of his first two collegiate seasons, Chesler is currently second in the school’s DI career records in goals-against average, wins and shutouts and third in saves. Backing up Chesler will be a trifecta of newcomers in redshirt freshman Ryan Henke and true freshmen Daniel DeGraff and Connor Quinn. Henke carries the most collegiate experience into the season after arriving at High Point in 2009 and redshirting last season. DeGraff is a solid shot stopper who comes to HPU from Statesville Chris-

tian in Statesville, N.C., where he was a two-time AllState and three-time All-Conference honoree. Quinn spent his high school years in Sigonella, Sicily where he was a three-year starter for Sigonella High School. He was a three-time first-team All-Europe selection. All four starters return on the backline for the Panthers and will look to build on last season when the defense had its best goals-against average and the most shutouts in 11 years of Division I soccer. Ryan Bennett will once again man the left back position after a strong freshman campaign. A dangerous player with great crossing ability, Bennett will look to get involved in the attack on the flanks. At center back, junior Will Stewart and sophomore Todd Ray return to man the position yet again in 2010. Stewart is a skilled one-on-one defender who acts as the leader of the backline organizing the other three defenders. Ray is a tall presence in the box that is very good at winning balls in the box as well as passing out of the back. Redshirt-sophomore Jeffrey Demarchi will begin the season as the starter at right back after taking over the position halfway through the 2009 season. After stepping into the lineup in the eighth game of the season, Demarchi helped to stabilize a back line which gave up just nine goals in the final 10 games of the regular season. Senior Justin Pruetz will again provide quality minutes backing up the centerbacks and right back this season after playing in nine games with five starts last season. Newcomers vying for time this season include

transfers Keith Cowdrey and Marty Stern, redshirt freshman Luke Grome and freshman Adam Sewell. Cowdrey comes to HPU from Santa Clara and will see time at right back where he will provide an attacking element to the backline. Stern transferred to High Point from Rutgers and will likely see time in both the midfield and at right back this season. Stern played in six games for Rutgers with two starts during his freshman year and will be a solid contributor for the Panthers in 2010. Grome redshirted in 2009 and will back up both the fullback positions in 2010. Sewell comes to HPU from England and is a tremendous athlete who will see time in both the midfield and along the back. Midfield

High Point will welcome back two starters in the midfield in reigning Big South Freshman of the Year Shawn Sloan and Big South All-freshman honoree Patrick Donahue but must find a way to replace Matt Tuttle who led the team with six assists in 2009. Sloan returns to HPU after finishing first on the team with six goals and tied for the team lead with 14 points. The first-team All-Big South honoree is a smart attacker who controls the ball well at his feet. Donahue started every game for the Panthers in 2009 at defensive midfield and was one of the team’s top ball winners. A very strong player in the air, Do-

Senior Adam Hatem slides up from the backline this season to provide minutes in the midfield. An All-Conference player in 2008, Hatem is a strong defender who can disrupt the attack opponents attack in the midfield. Two newcomers that will be counted on to provide an instant impact this season are freshmen Jonny Bonner and Alex Martinez. Bonner is an attacking midfielder from Ireland and a former member of Ireland’s U16 and U17 youth teams. A skilled dribbler and passer, Bonner will be help to quarterback the HPU attack this season. Martinez is a former Parade All-American from Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, S.C., the No. 1 high school team in the country in 2008. Martinez is a creative attack who possesses both strength and speed. In his senior season, Martinez compiled an impressive 80 points on 31 goals and 18 assists. from a season ago. Leading the High Point attack will be preseason Big South Preseason Player of the Year Karo Okiomah. Okiomah finished 2009 on a tear with three goals and an assist in the final three games last season and will look to carry that over into this season. One of the most athletic players in the Big South, Okiomah’s strength and speed combo is difficult for any defense to handle. Karo Okiomah is flanked on either side by senior Scott Rojo and his brother, sophomore Fejiro Okiomah. Rojo is a skilled dribbler who is comfortable taking on defenders one-on-one and providing service into the box from the wing. This summer Rojo played for the Carolina Dynamo of the USL Premier Development League and finished tied for third in assists. He was named one of the top players in the league at the end of the season. Fejiro Okiomah was named both second-team All-Big South and a member of the Big South AllFreshman team in 2009. A strong athletic player, Okiomah finished 2009 with four goals and three assists. He is a strong passer who is equally comfortable creating his own shot and delivering passes to set up his teammates. The Panthers’ depth is exhibited by the strong group of back-ups that the team returns in 2010. Junior Kendall Lawson and sophomores Stephen Clowes and Shane Malcolm combined for eight goals and four assists off the bench last season. Lawson is one of HPU’s fastest players and he uses that speed to take on defenders one-on-one out on the wings. He is also a good defender who showed an affinity for tracking back and winning balls in the midfield last season. Clowes is a tall target forward who used his height and strength to great effect on set pieces last

year. His composure on the ball and his ability to receive passes well will let the offense work off him to create numerous opportunities. Malcolm is a superb athlete who showed flashes of greatness in 2009. Malcolm speed and dribbling ability created numerous chances for the High Point offense in 2009. His runs off the ball are also very good, making him a prime target for crosses into the box both on set pieces and in the run of play. Dustin Fonder

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Roanoke ’94 • First season at HPU: 2007

High Point University head coach Dustin Fonder will look to take the Panthers to new heights in 2010 after guiding the team to its best finish in Division I history and earning Big South Coach of the Year honors in 2009. This year’s squad was picked first in the Big South Preseason Poll and returns 10 starters and five of the top six scorers from last year’s team. It is the first time in team history that the Panthers have been picked as the preseason No. 1. Junior Karo Okiomah also became the first HPU player picked as Big South Preseason Player of the Year after ending 2009 tied for the team lead with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Fonder is entering his fourth season as head coach of the High Point University Panthers. In three seasons, he has amassed an overall record of 23-29-6 and a 10-8-4 mark in conference. Fonder has tied the High Point Division I record of nine wins in each of his previous two seasons, losing just three Big South games in that span. Last season HPU went 9-7-2 and finished second in the Big South with a 5-1-2 mark, the best in the team’s 11 years as part of the conference. High Point tied its all-time high with four players being named All-Big South including senior Matt Tuttle and freshman Shawn Sloan, who each earned first team honors. Freshmen Fejiro Okiomah and Todd Ray joined Tuttle and Sloan as both were named to the second team. Sloan and Okiomah were also named to the AllFreshman team along with Patrick Donahue and Sloan was named Big South Freshman of the Year. In 2008, Fonder led the Panthers to a mark of 9-8-3 and a 4-2-2- record in the Big 4

South. The team outscored its opponents in Big South play for the first time since joining the conference in 1999. HPU had four players named All-Big South, as Hilaire Babou and Chris Shrum made the first team and Adam Hatem and Scott Rojo were named to the second team. HPU tightened its defense over a half-goal per game from 2007 to 2008, in large part due to Big South All-Freshman selection Michael Chesler in goal. Chesler was joined on the All-Freshman squad by forward Karo Okiomah and midfielder Will Stewart. Fonder joined the High Point staff in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped with all day-to-day aspects of the team. He helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season. Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising. He coached the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. While with the Maroons, Fonder coached thirty All-ODAC players, three ODAC Rookies of the Year and two ODAC Players of the Year. A 1994 graduate of Roanoke College, Fonder was a member of the Maroons’ men’s soccer team where he was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Fonder played professionally both in the USISL and the NPSL from 1995-1999. In addition to playing for the Roanoke College soccer team, Fonder also starred

for the men’s basketball team and is still the all-time assists leader. For all of his athletic talents Fonder was inducted in to the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 2006. Fonder is also very involved in the development of the game. He serves as the technical director for the Piedmont Triad Football club. He also is a head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (’94 boys). Fonder has been married to his wife Kim for two years. The couple resides in High Point with their daughter Dakota and dog, Kobe.
