HIGH POINT 2011 Men’s Soccer
UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book
Season Preview The High Point University men’s soccer team enjoyed its best season in program history in 2010, going 16-4-1 overall and winning the Big South Regular Season Championship with a perfect 8-0-0 record. Still the Panthers fell one-game shy of their overall goal when they lost to Coastal Carolina in the Big South Championship game and found themselves on the outside looking in during the NCAA Tournament. “We are very proud of what we accomplished last year,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “To win 16 games was an incredible achievement but when we sat down with the team for the first time this season we said this was a new year and we are back to 0-0. Our ultimate goal this season is to reach to reach the NCAA tournament. We have a unified group with a one track mind. It is NCAAs or bust for us this season and we are putting in the work this preseason to hopefully make that goal a reality.” This season, HPU has once again been picked to finish atop the Big South Conference. The Panthers also boast the Big South Preseason Attacking and Defensive Players of the Year in seniors Karo Okiomah and Michael Chesler. Okiomah returns after being named Big South Player of the Year and an NSCAA third-team All-American as a junior. The forward has also been named to the Hermann Watch List. Chesler was a first-team All-Big South selection last season and returns between the pipes after leading the conference in wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts in 2010. In all High Point returns nine starters in 2011, including seven All-Conference selections and the Big South Freshman of the Year. Juniors Fejiro Okiomah and Shawn Sloan joined Chesler and Karo Okiomah as first-team sections while senior Will Stewart, redshirt-junior Ryan Bennett and junior Todd Ray were each named to the second team. Sophomore Adam Sewell returns after being named Big South Freshman of the Year and a member of College Soccer News’ All-Freshmen third team in his first collegiate campaign. “This season will be a different situation for us,” Fonder said. “Our goal when we took over this program was to win a conference championship which we accomplished last year with a perfect 8-0-0 record. With that now comes the reality that we are the ones that everyone is going after. We have the X on our back so we will need even better focus, better preparation and better play to keep our spot at the top.”
Goalkeepers
Michael Chesler returns for his fourth and final season in net for the Panthers in 2011. Chesler has compiled a record of 34-18-6 in his previous three seasons and has set HPU Div. I career records for wins, goals-against average and shutouts. He is an athletic keeper who has great instincts in net and has shown a great ability to make the spectacular save.
2
“We couldn’t be happier to have Michael Chesler return for his senior season,” Fonder said. “He has made tremendous progress over his first four years. He serves as a captain and a leader both on and off the field. His play in goals speaks for itself. We feel he is the top goalkeeper in the Big South and one of the best in the entire region.” Fighting for the number two spot will be a pair of talented freshmen in Kody Palmer and Jacob Boyd and a trio of seasoned campaigners in sophomore Daniel DeGraff, redshirt-sophomore Ryan Henke, and redshirt-freshman Conor Quinn. All five keepers will look to push Chesler and compete for time down the line. “We have several capable backups that can step in if Michael happens to get injured,” Fonder said. “Freshman Kody Palmer is a physical specimen that we feel he could be a future star of this program one day. It will take him time to get adapted to the college game but who better to learn from than Michael. Jacob Boyd also has loads of potential and some great size. We also have three solid keepers returning in Daniel DeGraff, Ryan Henke and Connor Quinn.” GOALKEEPERS No. Name (Class) Record 00 Ryan Henke (R-So.) -- 0 Kody Palmer (Fr.) -- 1 Michael Chesler (Sr.) 16-4-1 4 Conor Quinn (R-Fr.) -- 18 Jacob Boyd (Fr.) -- 37 Daniel DeGraff (So.) 0-0-0

The Panthers return three all-conference starters off a backline that held opponents to an HPU Div. I record 19 goals in 2010. Senior Will Stewart and junior Todd Ray will return at central defense while redshirt-junior Ryan Bennett returns at left back. The three defenders have played together on the backline for each of the past two seasons and that experience should pay dividends in 2011. “We feel really good about our back four as a
whole,” Fonder said. “We have three All-Conference players returning along the back in Ryan Bennett, Todd Ray and Will Stewart. We have a lot of capable options to slot in at right back. We feel that our defensive unit has a great blend of skill and experience and could be a big strength for us this season.” Ryan Bennett has developed to become one of the best left backs in the Big South Conference. A skilled two-way player, Bennett has proven to be a great one-on-one defender and a key part of High Point’s attack on the left flank. In two seasons, Bennett has recorded four goals and one assist. Backing up Bennett will primarily be redshirtjunior Kendall Lawson. Lawson missed 2010 with an injury but will look to make an impact in his return in 2011. A naturally left footed player, Lawson is very quick and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He will see time both at left back and on the left side of the attack. In central defense, HPU boasts two very good players in Stewart and Ray. Both are good individual defenders and solid in the air, and will be the anchors of the HPU defense this fall. Redshirt-juniors Jeff Demarchi and Marty Stern, as well as redshirtfreshman Matt Donald will look to provide depth at the center back positions. One of the few positions up for grabs heading into 2011 is right back due to the loss of four year player Adam Hatem. Several capable replacements have emerged during preseason, including Stern, redshirt-junior Keith Cowdrey, and juniors Fejiro Okiomah and Shane Malcolm. 2011 Men’s Soccer Midfield
For two straight years the Big South Freshmen of the Year has come out of the High Point midfield. Junior Shawn Sloan won the award in 2009 and sophomore Adam Sewell garnered the award in 2010. The two will be key players in High Point’s midfield in 2011. “We play with three midfielders with is a little unique here at High Point,” Fonder said. “Because of the way we play we need players who are versatile, athletic two-way players. We feel like we have that in guys like Shawn Sloan and Adam Sewell. Sloan is probably our best attacking player in the bunch while Sewell is our best defensive midfielder with his aggressive play and his skill in the air.” In addition to Sloan and Sewell, the Panthers have a number of players who should expect to compete for time in the midfield this fall, including junior Patrick Donahue, sophomore Alex Martinez, and freshmen Leon Carby and Taurean Greenidge. Rounding out the HPU midfield will be redshirtsophomore Luke Grome and redshirt-junior Josh du Coudray. Sloan finished fifth in the Big South with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists in 2010. The Geneva, Ill., native was second in assists in the Big South, behind only teammate Scott Rojo. A very smart player and an exceptional passer, Sloan will be counted on to orchestrate the HPU offense this season. Sewell stepped into the starting lineup as a defensive midfielder in his second game and never relinquished the spot. He finished with one goal and one assist and was a defensive presence in the middle of the park for the Panthers. The England native is a skilled player in the air and a threat to score on any HPU set piece. The third spot in the midfield is up for grabs after junior Fejiro Okiomah switched positions over the offseason. Several players will compete for the spot, including former starter Patrick Donahue, sophomore Alex Martinez and freshmen Leon Carby and Taurean Greenridge. Donahue is a defensive-minded player who adds great depth to the midfield. He is a disruptive force in the middle and is great at linking play. Martinez had an up-and-down freshman season but turned it on towards the end of the fall and into the spring. He is a very skilled dribbler who provides a level of creativity in the midfield. Carby comes to HPU from West Hartford, Conn., where he was a High School All-American and a member of the US U-18 Youth National Team. He is a dangerous player in the offensive third that possess very good passing and an eye for goal. Greenridge is a native of Bridgetown, Barbados and steps onto campus as one of the fastest players on the roster. His speed will challenge defenders in the middle of the park and out on the flanks. “We are very excited to have such a talented group of players in the midfield, and we

look forward to the tough challenge of finding the right blend of players to help us from game to game,” Fonder said. “We really feel fortunate to have so many good options to choose from.” MIDFIELDERS No. Name (Class) 2 Leon Carby (Fr.) 3 Adam Sewell (So.) 6 Taurean Greenridge (Fr.) 7 Alex Martinez (So.) 10 Shawn Sloan (Jr.) 16 Marty Stern (R-Jr.) 19 Patrick Donahue (Jr.) 26 Josh Du Coudray (R-Jr.)

The High Point attack will be led this season by Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year and Hermann Award Watch List player Karo Okiomah. The senior striker will head a group of athletic and talented forwards that will test opponents throughout the year. Other players for HPU who will compete for time up top include Fejiro Okiomah, Malcolm, junior Stephen Clowes, and freshman Mamadee Nyepon. Rounding out the Panthers forward unit will be Lawson, du Coudray, and fellow redshirt-junior Dean Judson. “We are really excited about our attacking players and what they bring to the table,” Fonder said. “This is a dynamic and talented group of attackers, and if they buy in and work hard they will be an integral part of our success this season.” Karo Okiomah is coming off a season in which he tallied a conference-high 12 goals in just 16 games. He finished sixth in the nation in goals per game. A two-year captain, Okiomah possesses both elite speed and strength which makes him a difficult matchup for any defender. He has 22 career goals and needs 12 more to become HPU’s Div. I career leader. “Karo has looked good so far this preseason,” Fonder said. “He has earned several preseason accolades and we hope that through his hard work and dedication to the team he will put himself in a position to earn some post-season recognition as well.” Other key attackers for High Point in 2010 include juniors Fejiro Okiomah and Shane Malcolm. Okiomah tied his brother with 12 goals in his sophomore season and tied for the conference lead with 27 points. The Austin, Texas, native is an incredibly strong forward who uses that strength to hold off defenders and to shed potential tackles. Malcolm finished 2010 with seven goals while starting all season on the right flank. He is an extremely quick attacker who looks to break on goal at every available opportunity. He is also a skilled passer, picking up six assists in 2010. Junior Stephen Clowes also returns this season and will provide depth to the attack. After scoring
four goals in his freshman season, Clowes suffered from some terrible luck during a sophomore campaign in which he went scoreless. He has looked much more dangerous during the spring and into the preseason and appears ready to return to his scoring ways. Fonder and the High Point coaching staff are expecting big things from freshman Mamadee Nyepon who comes to HPU from nearby Greensboro, N.C. Nyepon was one of the top attackers in the US Development Academy system over the past two years and was ranked as one of the top 100 recruits by TopDrawerSoccer. He can play anywhere across the front line and is an extremely dangerous player in the final third. High Point will also face such non-conference tests as UNC Greensboro on the road and both Richmond and VCU at home. Dustin Fonder
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Roanoke ’94 • First season at HPU: 2007
High Point University men’s soccer coach Dustin Fonder returns for his fifth year at the helm in 2011 when he will look to build on an historic 2010 season in which the Panthers won a record 16 games and finished fourth in the nation with 49 goals. Fonder has amassed an overall record of 39-33-7 and an 18-8-4 mark in conference in his four years with the Panthers. He was named Big South Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010, making him just the third coach in Big South history to win the award in back-to-back seasons. Fonder will lead a squad in 2011 that has been picked to finish first in the Big South for the second consecutive year. The Panthers return nine starters from last season’s 16-win team including seven AllConference honorees and the defending Big South Freshman of the Year. Senior Karo Okiomah is the Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year and a member of the Hermann Watch list while senior goalkeeper Michael Chesler has been named Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. HPU finished 2010 with its best record in program history at 16-4-1. The Panthers also won their first Big South Regular Season crown with a perfect 8-0-0 record, becoming the first team to go undefeated and untied in the Big South while playing an eight game schedule. Okiomah was named Big South Player of the Year and an NSCAA thirdteam All-American after scoring 12 goals in just 16 games and freshman Adam Sewell became the second-straight HPU player to earn Big South Freshman of the Year honors after starting all season in the midfield. The Panthers placed a program-high eight players on the All-Conference teams, including five who earned first team honors. 4
Karo Okiomah, Chesler, Scott Rojo, Shawn Sloan and Fejiro Okiomah all earned firstteam honors. Will Stewart Ryan Bennett and Todd Ray were all named to the second team. After having 15 players named to the Big South All-Conference teams during High Point’s first seven years in the conference, HPU has had 19 players honored in four seasons under Fonder. The Panthers also have had their first Big South Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and their first All-American under Fonder’s leadership. Prior to 2010, Fonder guided the Panthers to back-to-back nine win seasons in 2008 and 2009, twice-tying the teams’ previous Div. I record for wins in a season. HPU lost just three games against Big South opponents in the two seasons, going 9-3-4 in conference play. Fonder joined the High Point staff in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped with all day-to-day aspects of the team. He helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season. Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising. He coached the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. While with the Maroons, Fonder coached thirty All-ODAC players, three ODAC Rookies of the Year and two ODAC Players of the Year. A 1994 graduate of Roanoke College,
Fonder was a member of the Maroons’ men’s soccer team where he was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Fonder played professionally both in the USISL and the NPSL from 1995-1999. In addition to playing for the Roanoke College soccer team, Fonder also starred for the men’s basketball team and is still the all-time assists leader. For all of his athletic talents Fonder was inducted in to the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 2006. Fonder is also very involved in the development of the game. He serves as the technical director for the Piedmont Triad Football club. He also is a head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (’94 boys). Fonder has been married to his wife Kim for three years. The couple resides in High Point with their daughter Dakota and dog, Kobe.
