Prospectus & Record Book

Season Preview The High Point University men’s soccer team has enjoyed one of its best runs in program history over the past four seasons, winning at least nine games in each season including a record 16 wins in 2010. As the Panthers begin the 2012 season they will look to continue that streak and win the first Big South Championship in program history. High Point returns seven starters from last season’s squad led by All-Conference selections Shawn Sloan, Adam Sewell and Fejiro Okiomah. Sloan was named first-team All-Conference in 2011 after finishing with four goals and a team-high seven assists. Sewell and Okiomah were both named to the second team. Other key returning players this season include forward Mamadee Nyepon, midfielders Ryan Bennett, Shane Malcolm and Leon Carby and defender Todd Ray. “We are excited about the team we get to work with this season,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “We have a great balance of experience and youth. Hopefully the experience will rub off on the younger players and we will be able to mold these guys into a productive unit. We have a very good core of returning players that should let us get off to a strong start. I also feel that we have a team that can be very stout defensively and do a good job staying organized.” HPU started the 2011 season slowly but closed strong with a 4-0-1 mark in its final five games to finish with a 9-9-3 record. In the Big South Tournament, the Panthers picked up a 3-1 quarterfinal win over No. 3-seed Campbell before tying host Gardner-Webb, 0-0, in the semifinals and falling on penalty kicks. The highlight of the season for High Point was a 3-2 win over VCU in the nationally televised Fox Soccer Game of the Week. The Panthers trailed by a score of 2-1 late but scored twice in the span of one minute to pick up the win. “Our number-one goal when we kick off each season is to reach the NCAA Tournament,” Fonder said. “We have come up short of that goal in the past few seasons. Still, we feel that this year’s team is deep and talented enough to battle for a conference championship and earn a bid to the NCAAs.” The Panthers are once again picked to finish near the top of the conference, coming in second in the Big South Preseason Poll behind only defending regular-season champion Coastal Carolina. HPU received 99 points overall and finished just ahead of Campbell (94) and Liberty (88). Goalkeepers The Panthers will have to deal with the loss 2

Back Row (Left to Right): Erien Campbell, Todd Ray, Taurean Greenidge, Fejiro Okiomah, Adam Sewell, Kevin Fallet, Patrick Donahue, Stephen Clowes, Matt Donald, Steven Machi, Garrett Blodgett. Middle Row (L to R): Pat Shelton, Mamadee Nyepon, Austin Yearwood, Lucas Favier, Jacob Boyd, Kody Palmer, Ryan Henke, Leon Carby, Westin Lendon, Adam Storm. Front Row (L to R): Shawn Sloan, Marty Stern, Colin Sweeney, Emmanuel Yacho, Ben Burdon, Luke Grome, Shane Malcolm, Kendall Lawson, Keith Cowdrey, Nate Lee, Ryan Bennett.

of Michael Chesler in 2012 after his graduation last spring. Chesler leaves HPU as its Div. I career leader in goals-against average, saves and shutouts. Several returners will look to fill the position led by redshirt-freshman Kody Palmer. He will be pushed by redshirt-junior Ryan Henke, redshirt-freshman Jacob Boyd and freshman Lucas Favier. “We had the great luxury of a four-year starter in Michael Chesler and obviously those are big shoes to fill,” Fonder said. “That being said we brought Kody Palmer in a year early and redshirted him so he could gain the experience necessary. We don’t expect a dip in form at the position as we feel Kody is prepared to take the torch from Michael and keep running with it.” Palmer possesses great size at 6-3 and reflexes that let him cover a great deal of the goal at any time. Coming to HPU out of the DC United Academy, Palmer’s potential makes him an exciting player to watch this season. Henke is the senior statesman of the HPU goalkeepers and the lone High Point keeper to record minutes in a game. He has developed into a great leader and a solid keeper in his time with the Panthers. Boyd and Favier are both younger players who are not as far along in their development, but both have very good size and can perform well if called upon. Defense The HPU backline will have a new look to it in 2012 as the team works in two new outside backs around returning center backs Okiomah and Ray. Freshman Austin Yearwood has looked

good in his first preseason and laid claim to the left back position while right back has featured a fight between redshirt-senior Keith Cowdrey and freshman Adam Storm to claim the starting role. “We expect our backline to be very good no matter who the personnel might be,” Fonder said. “We are lucky enough to have a deep and talented group of defenders who can fill multiple roles and who are athletic enough to cause our opponents’ offense a number of issues.” Okiomah and Ray are the most experienced pair of center backs in the Big South this season and will serve as the backbone of the team’s defense. Both are strong players who can control the ball with their feet and in the air. Okiomah has played all over the field during his time with the Panthers but has settled in well at center back. His athleticism and ball skills allow him to both defend one-on-one and pass out of the back. Ray is a skilled defender who possesses a strong left leg. He has shown the ability to switch the field or start the attack with one kick. Yearwood has laid claim to his spot in the starting lineup almost from the moment he stepped on campus and looks to be HPU’s left back for the next few seasons. A skilled twoway player who will get forward into the attack, Yearwood was rated as one of the top-100 incoming freshmen in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com. He played his high school soccer at South Mecklenburg High School and was selected to play in the ESPN HS All-American game. Right back is the one unsettled position along the High Point backline as Cowdrey and Storm have each made a strong case during the preseason. Cowdrey is entering his third season with High Point and earned seven starts in 2011. He is a solid attacking player and a strong passer from the flank. Storm played at nearby Northern Guilford High School, scorWWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

2012 Men’s Soccer ing 43 career goals despite playing primarily on the backline. He is a talented one-on-one defender who can also provide cover at center back or defensive midfield. One dark horse who could enter the conversation moving forward in freshman Erien Campbell who comes to High Point from Dallas, Texas, where he played club soccer with Solar FC Chelsea. Three freshmen expected to provide depth all along the backline are Kevin Fallet, Nate Lee and Steven Machi. Fallet comes from Montgomery High School in Maryland where he was a four-year letter winner. Lee was a twoyear letter winner at Magruder High School in Maryland. Both defenders played their club soccer at Bethesda Real. Machi played at Upper St. Clair High school in Pennsylvania and was named first-team All-State in 2011 by ESPN HS. Additional depth in the back will come from redshirt-junior Luke Grome, redshirt sophomore Matt Donald and freshmen Westin Lendon and Garrett Blodgett. Midfield The High Point midfield will provide a wealth of experience and leadership in 2012 with all five projected starters having each earned at least seven starts in 2011. Bennett slides up from left back and will play in the defensive midfield alongside Sewell. Carby will be counted on to run the attack in the center of the field while Malcolm and Sloan will man the wing positions for the Panthers. “We expect the midfield to serve as the engine of our team this season,” Fonder said. “We have a lot of experienced and skillfull players there. The core of Bennett, Sewell, Sloan, Carby and Malcolm gives us a nice balance of defense and offense and you need both in the middle of the field to be successful.” Bennett played in 60 games during his first three seasons appearing primarily as a left back. His strong passing and his ability to make timely runs should work well in the middle of the field. He will play next to Sewell who WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

earned second-team All-Conference honors in 2011. He finished his sophomore season with two goals and three seasons and emerged as one of the top defensive midfielders in the conference. Sitting just ahead of Bennett and Sewell will be Carby. A well regarded recruit out of Connecticut, Carby finished his freshman campaign with a goal and three assists while starting seven games. He has played very well during the HPU preseason including a two-goal performance in the Panthers’ final exhibition game against Appalachian State. Sloan earned first-team All-Big South honors in 2011 and returns to lead the team in his final collegiate season. The midfielder scored 18 goals and dished out 17 assists in his first three seasons. He is already second in the HPU Div. I career record book in assists, 12 behind record holder Scott Rojo. Starting at the wing across from Sloan will be fellow senior Shane Malcolm. He scored twice and had six assists in 2011 and enters his final campaign with 12 career goals and 12 career assists. The experience in the midfield goes beyond the starters as the Panthers will feature several veteran options off the bench. Seniors Patrick Donahue and Marty Stern and sophomore Taurean Greenidge all saw significant minutes last season and combined to start 17 games. Donahue has appeared in 59 games and is a solid defensive presence in the middle of the field. Stern came to HPU from Rutgers and has played a box-to-box role in his two seasons with the Panthers. Greenidge appeared in eight games for High Point as a freshman and has looked much stronger and more confidant during the preseason. Freshman Colin Sweeney will be an option on the wing in 2012 while Storm and Fallet could both play in the midfield at times. Forwards With the graduation of Karo Okiomah, a first-round pick in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft, Nyepon will be counted on to spearhead the HPU attack in 2012. He will lead a talented group of forwards that include seniors

Stephen Clowes and Kendall Lawson and freshmen Ben Burdon and Emmanuel Yacho. “The forward position is admittedly a question mark going into the season,” Fonder said. “We lost Karo Okiomah who is one of the all-time leading scorers in school history so that is someone we need to replace. Mamadee Nyepon came here last year as a freshman and we expect him to take over that spot in 2012 and be ready to put up the numbers needed.” Nyepon played in 21 games with seven starts in 2011 and finished his first collegiate season with five goals and two assists. He is a dangerous combination of both size and speed as well as a very strong player in the air. Clowes played as a reserve forward in each of his first three seasons including 12 appearances in 2011. He is a tall player who requires attention when in the box. Lawson came back from injury in 2011 to play in 20 games and record two assists. He is a smaller player whose speed allows him to play up top or on the wing. Burdon is an ESPN HS All-American who played at Providence High School in Charlotte, N.C. He had 50 goals and 38 assists in his final two prep seasons. Yacho comes from Irving, Texas and played with Campbell at Solar FC Chelsea. Dustin Fonder

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Roanoke ’94 • First season at HPU: 2007

High Point University men’s soccer coach Dustin Fonder returns for his sixth year at the helm in 2012. He amassed an overall record of 48-42-10 and a 22-12-5 mark in conference play in his first five years with the Panthers and was named Big South Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2010, making him just the third coach in league history to win the award in back-to-back seasons. The Panthers have won at least nine games in each of Fonder’s last four seasons including a 9-9-3 mark in 2011. HPU recovered from a disappointing start to the season to go 5-2-1 in its final eight games, including a win over Campbell in the first round of the Big South Tournament. Four High Point players were named to the All-Big South team with Shawn Sloan named to the first team and Karo Okiomah, Fejiro Okiomah and Adam Sewell named to the second team. HPU enjoyed its best season in program history in 2010 with a record of 16-4-1. The Panthers also won their first Big South Regular Season crown, going a perfect 8-0-0 and becoming the first team to go undefeated and untied in the Big South while playing at least an eight-game schedule. HPU ranked among the top scoring teams in the nation, finishing fourth in the country with 49 goals. Karo Okiomah was named Big South Player of the Year and an NSCAA third-team All-American after scoring 12 goals in just 16 games and Sewell became the secondstraight HPU player to earn Big South Freshman of the Year honors after starting all season in the midfield. The Panthers placed a program-high eight players on the All-Conference teams in 2010, including five who earned first-team honors. Karo Okiomah, Michael Chesler, 4

Scott Rojo, Sloan and Fejiro Okiomah were all named first-team All-Big South and Will Stewart, Ryan Bennett and Todd Ray were all named second-team All-Big South. Prior to 2010, Fonder guided the Panthers to back-to-back nine win seasons in 2008 and 2009, twice-tying the teams’ previous Div. I record for wins in a season. HPU lost just three games against Big South opponents in the two seasons, going 9-3-4 in conference play. After having 15 players named to the Big South All-Conference teams during High Point’s first seven years in the conference, HPU saw 23 players honored in five seasons under Fonder. The Panthers also have had their first Big South Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year and their first All-American under Fonder’s leadership. In addition, High Point has seen its first players drafted into MLS under Fonder’s watch as Rojo was selected by Toronto FC in 2010 and Karo Okiomah was selected by the Houston Dynamo in 2011. Fonder joined the High Point staff in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped with all day-to-day aspects of the team. He helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season. Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising. He coached the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. While with the Maroons, Fonder coached thirty All-ODAC players, three ODAC Rookies of the Year and two ODAC Players of the Year.

A 1994 graduate of Roanoke College, Fonder was a member of the Maroons’ men’s soccer team where he was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Fonder played professionally both in the USISL and the NPSL from 1995-1999. In addition to playing for the Roanoke College soccer team, Fonder also starred for the men’s basketball team and is still the all-time assists leader. For all of his athletic talents Fonder was inducted in to the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 2006. Fonder is also very involved in the development of the game. He serves as the technical director for the Piedmont Triad Football club. He also is a head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (’94 boys). Fonder has been married to his wife Kim for four years. The couple resides in High Point with their daughter Dakota and dog, Kobe.
