2010-11 Season Preview The High Point University women’s basketball team has unfinished business after falling short of team goals in 2009-10. The Panthers had a solid season, going 17-14 overall and earning their first win over an SEC squad in the school’s Division I era with a win at Florida. But a third-place finish in conference and a second-straight loss in the Big South semifinals leaves HPU hungry for more in 2010-11. The Panthers return nine letter winners and four starters this season, including five seniors who all have starting experience in their collegiate careers. Junior Shamia Brown returns this season after leading HPU in scoring, with 10.2 points per game, and finishing second in rebounding, with 5.6 rebounds per game, last season. Senior Mackenzie Maier will attempt to break the Big South record for career blocks this season after setting the HPU Division I career record last season. Maier has 222 career blocks and needs 72 this season to pass Radford’s Kelli Darden. Other returners this season include 2009-10 starters Frances Fields, LaTeisha Dean and Amy Dodd as well as last season’s Big South Preseason Player of the Year, Jurica Hargraves. “We have a deep and experienced team this season,” head coach Tooey Loy said. “We go at least two deep at every position and at the guard spots we go as much as three deep. We have a lot of experience with five seniors and Shamia Brown. Our strength this year will be the play of our guards but we have also improved inside.” High Point was selected third in the Big South Preseason Poll behind Liberty and Gardner-Webb, the two teams they finished behind last season. The Panthers will be put to the test this season with a difficult schedule which includes games against teams from the SEC, the Big East and the CAA. “We have put together a very tough schedule this year, starting with games against VCU and American in our first weekend,” Loy said. “Both teams won 20 games last season and went to the WNIT. We also will play two teams that will most likely be in the top 25 in West Virginia and Georgia and will compete in UTEP’s Thanksgiving tournament against them, Arkansas and Idaho State.” BACKCOURT High Point will benefit from a combination of experience and depth in the backcourt this season. The Panthers return four players who have started double-digit games in seniors Frances Fields, Jurica Hargraves, LaTeisha Dean and Amy Dodd. Fields is a three year starters at point guard and will once again helm the offense in 2010-11. Fields is currently third in HPU Division I history with 363 career assists and needs just 17 to move into the Division I lead. The junior is one of High Point’s best on-ball defenders, leading the team last season with 59 steals. She is currently fifth on the HPU Division I career records list with 170 steals in three seasons.

LaTeisha Dean

“We have a lot of experience in the point with Frances Fields being our starting point guard for going on four years now,” Loy said. “She is ready to have a breakout season this year. Her biggest challenge has been her consistency. She can be one of the best point guards around if she can find that.” Hargraves is expected to move back into the starting lineup this season after a disappointing junior campaign which saw her scoring average drop from 13.5 point per game in 2008-09 to 8.6 points per game in 2009-10. Hargraves passed the 1,000 point mark last season and is currently third in the HPU Division I era with 1,042 career points. Last season, Hargraves led the Panthers with 50 three-pointers, shooting .400 from behind the arc. “Jurica Hargraves was Preseason Player of the Year one year ago but did not have the type of year that we had hoped for,” Loy said. “She has worked all summer long to make sure she finishes off her career with a great senior season. She has gotten stronger and quicker and we feel like she will surpass where she was as a sophomore.” Dean started 20 games last season at shooting guard for HPU, averaging 7.6 points per game. She tied a career-high with 20 points on the road at George Mason. An all-around player, Dean is also one of High Point’s best backcourt defenders and was often matched up against the opponents top scorers last season. “LaTeisha Dean started most of the games for us last year at shooting guard,” Loy said. “She is a very good shooter and one of our best defenders. Her and Jurica each provide different things but those two together make us as good as anyone in the conference at the two spot.” After coming off the bench in her first two seasons, Dodd stepped into the starting lineup and emerged as one of High Point’s best all-around players in 2009-10. Dodd finished in the top three for the Panthers in scoring (9.1), rebounding (4.8), assists (2.7) and steals (1.5). She is a tall guard who does a good job putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket. Against UNC Asheville on Jan. 25, Dodd scored a career-high

29 points to lead HPU to a 77-63 win. It was the sixth-highest point total in the HPU Division I era and the most scored by any active High Point women’s basketball player. “Amy started every game for us last season and was probably our best player last season until she got an elbow injury in January,” Loy said. “She played through the injury, but it limited some of the things she was able to do. She has rehabbed and is back to where she was before she got hurt. She does a little bit of everything for us and will make our team go.” Backing up Fields at the point guard position this season will be sophomore Erin Reynolds and freshman Tayler Tremblay. Reynolds returns after a successful freshman season in which she averaged 6.4 points and 1.6 assists per game. The Berkely W.Va., native came off the bench to lead High Point in scoring in three of the first four Big South games last season, recording at least 14 points each time. She also led the team in assists in two of those games. “Erin Reynolds got a lot of valuable experience last season and we feel that she has really stepped up her game,” Loy said. “She is much stronger and has learned to play within our system. She will definitely challenge for more playing time this season.” Tremblay comes to High Point from Boca Raton, Fla., where she played for five seasons at Saint Andrews’ High School. In her senior season, Tremblay averaged 23.3 points, 6.3 assists and 3.2 steals per game. She was the leading scorer in Palm Beach County during her senior season and was named Palm Beach Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American Nominee. “Tayler Tremblay has a great game overall,” Loy said. “She handles the ball well and is quick and athletic. She sees the floor well and is a great passer. She just needs to adjust to the college game but we feel like she can help us immediately.” Freshman Carter Williams will back up Dean and Hargraves at the shooting guard position in her first collegiate season. Williams scored over 1,000 career points at Spottswood High School. She finished fourth in scoring, second in assists and third in steals in Spottswood women’s basketball history. “We have added another quality freshman in Carter Williams who had a great high school career,” Loy said. “She is a great outside shooter and smart player who really sees the floor. She is playing behind two very good players which will help as she gets used to the college game.” Sophomore Laura Whitt returns for her sophomore season and will again backup Dodd. Whitt is a strong player with the ball in her hand and has great floor vision which makes her a very good passer. “Laura Whitt got a lot of good minutes last season for us,” Loy said. “She is a good shooter and one of our best passers. She really came on strong at the end of the season and has worked hard over the summer. We expect her to have a much better season.” Freshman Lindsay Puckett will also see time behind Dodd in her first collegiate season. Puckett scored 1,289 points in her four-year prep career and averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals a game in her senior season. “Lindsay Puckett is a good player who does a little bit of everything,” Loy said. “She is a great scorer who can shoot from outside as well as drive to the basket. She will end up being one of our best rebounding guards as she just has a nose for the ball. We expect her to be a great player both this year and down the road.”

FRONTCOURT The Panthers return three skilled front court players this season in Maier, Brown and sophomore Jazmin Cromartie. Maier is an inside-outside player who is one of the best shot blockers in Big South history and also one of HPU’s best threepoint shooters. Last season, Maier blocked an HPU Division I record 91 shots while also shooting .366 from behind the arc and sinking 37 three pointers. In 2009-10, Maier averaged 9.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. “Mackenzie Maier is a great player for us at the four-spot,” Loy said. “She is more of a guard in a forward’s body. She is one of our purest three-point shooters and makes good decisions with her passing. Her shot blocking makes us a lot bigger inside.” Brown came off the bench in all but five games last season, but still led the team with 10.2 points and was second with 5.6 rebounds per game. She is one of the most athletic players in the conference and is very skilled at getting to the basket for close range shots. This offseason, the junior worked on her outside shot to add another dimension to her offensive arsenal. “Shamia was probably our most consistent player last year and we feel that she is ready for a breakout season,” Loy said. “She is as athletic as anyone in the conference and this year can go inside and out and hurt teams in transition. We see her as a player capable of averaging a double-double.” Cromartie earned valuable minutes in her first collegiate season, backing up the recently graduated Ashlee’ Samuels at center. The sophomore is a physical presence down low who is a good post defender and rebounder. Her offensive game is much more developed this season after a summer spent working to improve her shot and post moves. “Jazmin Cromartie battled through both sickness and injury last season but still got valuable playing time as a freshman which will help this season,” Loy said. “She is a very strong player that can score around the basket and dominate the boards.” High Point freshman Cheyenne Parker joins the team as the lone post recruit this season and will compete for a starting position in her first collegiate campaign. Parker, a 6-4 center, comes to the Panthers from nearby Southwest Guilford High School. The Queens, N.Y., native was invited to the East-West All-Star game where she led all players with 13 rebounds. Parker is the fifth HPU player in the last four years to play in the East-West Game as Cromartie played in the 2009 game, Brown played in the 2008 game and Dodd and Hargraves each played in the 2007 game. “Cheyenne Parker is a 6-4 athlete who will play a big role in the post for us this season,” Loy said. “She can score the basketball from both the left and right and will add to our shot blocking. She is a great defender and rebounder. We are looking for her to step in right away and help us in the post to make us as good inside as we have been in my time here at High Point.” Shamia Brown

Tooey Loy

Head Coach • Alma Mater: High Point ’94 • First season at HPU: 2001-02

The 2010-11 season will be head coach Tooey Loy’s 10th leading the High Point University women’s basketball team. Every season under Loy has been competitive for HPU, as he has compiled a 147-120 record with records of .500 or better in seven of his nine seasons. The Panthers advanced to the Big South semifinals for the third consecutive year in 2010, finishing with a record of 17-14 on the season. In December, High Point earned its first win over an SEC opponent in the school’s Division I era with a 75-68 win over Florida in Gainesville, Fla. In nine seasons under Loy, the HPU women’s basketball program has never finished lower than fourth in the Big South or posted a below .500 record in conference play. In 2007, Loy won HPU’s only Big South Women’s Basketball Regular Season Championship, going 11-3 in conference and 18-12 overall. The team earned an automatic bid to the Women’s NIT and Loy was named Big South Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after previously winning the award in 2005. Loy’s HPU squads advanced to the finals of both the 2006 and 2003 Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournaments and took a trip to the preseason Women’s NIT in 2006. Twenty-one Panthers have earned All-Big South first team, second team or All-Freshman team honors under Loy. In 2009, Jurica Hargraves was named to the All-Big South first team, Mackenzie Maier was named to the second team and Shamia Brown was named to the All-Freshman team. In 2008, Maier earned Big South Freshman of the Year honors. In 2006, Katie O’Dell was named the Big South Player 4

of the Year. During Loy’s tenure he also coached two-time CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica honoree, Leslie Cook, who picked up third team honors in 2006 before earning a spot on the first team in 2007. Loy has been involved in HPU basketball since 1990, when he came to the school as a sophomore after beginning his career at UNC Greensboro. He played three seasons for head coach Jerry Steele, starting all three years and averaging 8.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He earned his undergraduate degree from HPU in 1994. Following graduation, Loy became an assistant for the women’s program under Dr. Joe Ellenburg. During his tenure on the bench, High Point made the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II and eventually Division I competition. As an assistant under Ellenburg, Loy was in charge of recruiting for the program, preparation of scouting reports, individual and team instruction and overseeing the academic progress of team members. The Panthers won at least 22 games in four of Loy’s six seasons as an assistant, including 26 in 1996-97, which was the most in school history since HPU’s 1978-79 team won 33.
