HIGH POINT 2014 Women’s Lacrosse

UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book

Season Preview The High Point University women’s lacrosse team comes into the 2014 as the team to beat after winning the inaugural Big South Conference tournament and playing in the team’s first ever NCAA Tournament last season. “Reaching the NCAA Tournament last year gives our program some momentum,” said head coach Lyndsey Boswell. “Now we want to use that momentum to get one step further.” HPU finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 10-9 and went 6-1 against Big South opponents. This year the team will try to improve on that record while defending the Big South title and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. The 2014 season will mark the fourth year of High Point’s program. Boswell is the only coach in program history, leading the Panthers to a 40-17 record in her first three seasons at the helm. Her assistants, Lauren Norris and Ana Heneberry, are both entering their second season with the Panthers. “I’m excited to bring back two people that know our system and are able to carry on my values and vision of the program,” said Boswell. This year’s team features the program’s first four-year senior class, which has been a part of the program since the first day. The Panthers have nine seniors on this year’s team, all of whom have played an integral role in the quick growth of the program. “Their belief in our vision is special,” said Boswell. “What they set out to do continues to drive them. They’ve never second guessed our vision or what they’ve set out to accomplish.” The Panthers return an experienced team with 24 letterwinners from last year’s NCAA Tournament squad. Included among the returners are Big South Defensive Player of the Year Jasmine Jordan as well as fellow first-team All-Conference members Mackenzie Carroll, Sara Kuhlman and Alec Perry. Also returning this season is second-team All-Conference member Christie Dougherty and All-Big South Tournament team members Cissy Woodyard and Emily Meier. “They know the expectations,” said Boswell of having such a veteran team. “It’s been nice to watch them direct and coach each other and also hold each other accountable.” As a team, HPU returns four out of its top five statistical leaders in goals, assists, points, ground balls and draw controls. High Point was picked first in the 2014 Big South preseason poll. It’s the second consecutive season that HPU has topped the preseason poll. The Panthers received seven out of 2

eight first-place votes and totaled 63 out of a possible 64 points overall. Davidson received the other first place vote and finished second in the poll with 57 points. Longwood finished third in the rankings with Winthrop, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Campbell and Presbyterian College following. Goalkeepers The Panthers’ 2014 roster features two goalies in junior Julia Burns and freshman Hayley Peets. Burns appeared in 10 games for the Panthers last season, including High Point’s NCAA Tournament game against Loyola. Burns ended the season with a 7.83 goals-against average and totaled 17 saves with a .415 save percentage. Peets, who will also see time in goal for HPU, comes to High Point from Pittsford, N.Y., where she was an Academic All-American at Pittsford Sutherland High School. As a senior, Peets was named an All-Greater Rochester Honorable Mention. “We have two very good options to play in the cage and stop the ball,” said Boswell. “Julia has taken a lot of notes these past two years and really made herself better and Hayley is such a skilled player that we feel confident in both of their abilities.” GOALKEEPERS No. Name (Class) 20 Julia Burns (Jr.) 31 Hayley Peets (Fr.)

Defenders High Point returns several talented defenders for the upcoming season in seniors Patricia Bigelow, Morgan Lambert, Katie McLaughlin, Megan Weisman and Cissy Woodyard along with redshirt-sophomore José Brake. Joining those six are freshmen Jianela Rincon and Christina Del Sesto. “Our style of defense is different than what our newcomers have played,” said Boswell. “So, from a defensive standpoint, to have that experience and leadership returning is huge.” Bigelow, McLaughlin, Weisman and Woodyard were all staples in the defensive third of the field last season for the Panthers. Woodyard started all 19 games in 2013 while Bigelow and McLaughlin both started 18 last year for HPU. Woodyard scooped up 15 ground balls and caused seven turnovers and was named to the Big South All-Tournament team. Bigelow ranked second on the team in caused turnovers (17) and fifth in ground balls (25). McLaughlin, meanwhile, won seven draw controls and grabbed 17 ground balls a year ago. Weisman appeared in 17 games including a start in 2013 for the Panthers, accumulating 13 ground balls and winning nine draw controls. Brake made eight appearances last season in her first year on the field with the Panthers. After redshirting as a true freshman, Brake corralled three ground balls and caused three turnovers last season. Lambert, meanwhile, missed a chunk of the season due to injury but was able to return and play in five games at the end of the season. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

Midfielders The Panthers boast an experienced midfield group featuring 11 returners and one newcomer. High Point has four returning All-Conference midfielders in seniors Christie Dougherty, Jasmine Jordan, Sara Kuhlman and Alec Perry as well as several other solid options in both the attacking and defensive midfield for the upcoming season. Jordan comes into the year as the leader among all active Div. I women’s lacrosse players with 146 career ground balls. She also ranks fourth among active players with 2.56 ground balls per game for her career. Jordan, who was the 2013 Big South Defensive Player of the Year and Big South Tournament MVP, has led the Panthers in ground balls and caused turnovers in each of the past two seasons. The senior captain started all 19 games a year ago, amassing 52 ground balls, 33 caused turnovers and 32 draw controls on the year. Her 1.74 caused turnovers per game led the Big South while her 2.74 ground balls per game were second in the conference. “Jasmine brings a lot to the table,” said Boswell. “She is a very intelligent person and she plays that way. She is able to see the big picture while also focusing on her specific role and although she isn’t so much a vocal leader, when she does speak people listen because she can always back it up.” Perry led High Point’s attack as a junior last season with 40 goals, which placed her in the top five in the Big South. Her four goals in the Big South Tournament along with five draw controls and four ground balls led to her being named to the All-Tournament team. Perry now sits just 23 goals shy of 100 for her career. Kuhlman also enters this season with a couple of career milestones in sight. The senior sits just three draw controls and 17 goals away from 100 in her career. In addition, Kuhlman is also 11 draw controls shy of tying the HPU WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

career record, which is held by Grace Gaeng with 108. Kuhlman was named first-team AllBig South in 2013 after posting 22 goals, 25 ground balls and 32 draw controls while starting every game for the Panthers. Dougherty, also a member of the All-Conference team, scored 14 goals with seven assists while starting all 19 games last year. The senior captain also managed 28 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls in 2013. Joining the returning seniors is Emily Meier. Meier returns after appearing in every game including 12 starts for High Point as a freshman. In her first year in a Panther uniform, Meier scored 18 goals, grabbed 20 ground balls and was named to the Big South All-Tournament team. Also back in 2014 for HPU is Tori Dunster, Clara Osmont, Leah Pace, Stephanie Pazulski and Kristina Renner. All of them factored into the Panthers’ success last year and will be looking to build upon their contributions this season. The lone freshman midfielder on this year’s roster is Kacy Koolage who won a Maryland state championship as a senior at Broadneck High School. Koolage complements the returning midfielders while also adding depth at the position for the Panthers. “It’s tough to be deep in the midfield,” said Boswell. “This year we have more depth in that position than we’ve ever had, which means a lot to us.” MIDFIELDERS No. Name (Class) 3 Alec Perry (Sr.) 8 Kacy Koolage (Fr.) 11 Sara Kuhlman (Sr.) 15 Christie Dougherty (Sr.) 17 Stephanie Pazulski (Jr.) 23 Emily Meier (So.) 26 Tori Dunster (So.) 27 Leah Pace (So.) 29 Jasmine Jordan (Sr.) 30 Kristina Renner (So.) 33 Clara Osmont (So.)

Attackers HPU features a solid mix of experience and youth in the attacking front. The Panthers attack will be led by senior captain Mackenzie Carroll who ranks third among active Div. I players coming into the season with 88 career assists, sixth with 1.54 assists per game and eighth with 182 points in her career. Carroll has led the Panthers in both assists and points in each of the last two seasons, finishing with 25 assists and 56 points a year ago. She was also

the team’s second leading scorer with 31 goals in 2013. “Mackenzie is just now starting to peak as a player, which is very exciting,” said Boswell. “She wants to do what is best for the team and is somebody that everyone loves and listens to and also respects. I think the biggest thing she brings to the offense is the ability to bring others along and build them up.” Other familiar faces back for the Panthers in 2014 are Kasey Callaway, Natalie Devine, Allie Foard, Kendyl Gardner, Lila Mastroberti and Emilie Pugliese. Gardner scored 24 goals last season, which was fourth-most on the team, while also grabbing 22 ground balls. Foard had 13 points as a freshman last season with eight goals and five assists while Mastroberti led the team with 39 draw controls. The returners are joined by five newcomers in freshmen Samantha Brown, Blake Pohanka, Melissa Villanti and Courtney Wells. Junior Abby Berrettone also returns this season after sitting out last year. All of them will add to the Panthers attacking efforts this spring. “We are working on being more dynamic and working on our cohesion and chemistry,” said Boswell. “It’s something that may not be there right away because it takes some time to build on but it’s definitely happening and coming along.” ATTACKERS No. Name (Class) 4 Mackenzie Carroll (Sr.) 5 Kendyl Gardner (Jr.) 10 Abby Berrettone (Jr.) 14 Allie Foard (So.) 16 Emilie Pugliese (R-So.) 18 Natalie Devine (So.) 19 Lila Mastroberti (So.) 22 Kasey Callaway (So.) 35 Samantha Brown (Fr.) 40 Melissa Villanti (Fr.)

Lyndsey Boswell

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Pfieffer ’05 • First season at HPU: 2009

The only head coach in the history of the High Point University women’s lacrosse program, Lyndsey Boswell led the Panthers to three conference championships in their first three seasons and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013. In the team’s first three seasons, HPU posted a 40-17 record. HPU’s ascension to the national level was a quick one. Boswell joined High Point University in June 2009 and began building the program. The Panthers won 15 games in their first season of 2011, a record for a first-year Div. I program, then won 15 games again in 2012. The Panthers made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2013. The 2013 season was the first for women’s lacrosse in the Big South Conference and marked the first time HPU was playing for an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. HPU went 6-1 in league play, earning the No. 2 seed to the Big South Tournament, where the High Point beat Davidson in the championship game. The Panthers faced Loyola in their first-ever NCAA Tournament game. High Point featured six AllBig South selections, including Defensive Player of the Year Jasmine Jordan. HPU’s first trip to the national tournament was no surprise after the program’s quick start. Boswell assembled a squad of 18 freshmen and six transfer students and led the team to a 15-4 record in 2011. The Panthers won the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) Tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Jacksonville in overtime in the championship game. Boswell was named NLC Coach of the Year and Grace Gaeng was named NLC Player of the Year. In 2012, the Panthers went 15-4 again despite playing a much tougher non-conference schedule. High Point beat both Navy and Oregon, which won their respective conferences and advanced to an NCAA play-in game. The Panthers won the NLC regular season with a 7-0

4

record. HPU featured NLC Co-Player of the Year and Attacker of the Year Mackenzie Carroll, Midfielder of the Year Christie Dougherty and Goalie of the Year Anna Wallingford. Boswell came to High Point after three seasons as head coach at St. Andrews University, where she molded a fledgling program into a contender in the NCAA Div. II Conference Carolinas. The Knights improved from six wins in her first season of 2007 to a program-record seven wins in 2008 and another program-record 11 wins in 2009. The Knights’ 11-8 overall record and 7-5 conference record in 2009 marked the first winning records in program history. The team advanced to the Conference Carolinas semifinals twice. In each of Boswell’s final two seasons, St. Andrews set program records for goals, assists, points, draw controls and caused turnovers. In 2009, St. Andrews saw attack Kerrie Brown named its first-ever NCAA Div. II All-American in women’s lacrosse. Prior to St. Andrews, Boswell spent two seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Pfeiffer University, where she assisted in all aspects of the program. In her two seasons at Pfeiffer, Boswell coached three All-Americans, five All-Region players, five All-Conference players and a Murphy Osborne winner (the conference’s highest individual award). The Lady Falcons won the conference title in 2005 and boasted the best GPA in NCAA Div. II. As a student-athlete at Pfeiffer from 200004, Boswell was a two-time IWLCA first-team All-American, four-time womenslacrosse.com All-American and was Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Player of the Year in 2004. She led the nation in points and goals per game in 2002 and, over her four seasons, garnered National Player of the Week honors six times and was a three-time All-Region selection. As

a team captain, Boswell helped lead Pfeiffer to a CVAC Championship in 2004 and set the program records in points, goals and assists. She was named Pfeiffer Athlete of the Year twice. Boswell is the founder and director of All-Star Lax Camps, which holds camps yearround in North Carolina, Maryland and New York. Boswell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services at Pfeiffer in 2005. She is originally from just south of Annapolis, Md. and now resides in High Point, N.C.
