HIGH POINT 2010 Women’s Soccer
UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book
2010 Season Preview The High Point University women’s soccer team enters the 2010 season looking to defend its 2009 Big South Tournament Championship and win the team’s third Big South crown in four seasons. Last year, the Panthers finished the season with a 5-3-2 record in their final 10 games. The HPU defense played a big role in the turnaround, allowing just five goals in the final ten games and posting six shutouts. At the Big South Tournament, High Point posted three-straight shutouts to win the championship as the No. 7 seed. The Panthers advanced to play eventual national champion North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. HPU held the Tar Heels without a goal for almost 70 minutes before a score off a rebound gave UNC the 1-0 win. The loss was High Point’s closest in three games against North Carolina. HPU returns 13 letterwinners in 2010, including second-team All-Big South member and leading scorer Janay Whittaker and Big South All-Tournament honorees Brielle Spencer and Danniel Rosado. The roster also features 12 newcomers that will look to contribute from the first whistle. “Winning the championship gives us great momentum and confidence going into the season,” head coach Marty Beall said. “However we know this will be a hard road for us, the conference is not easy. We are a young team this year and with that comes some roller coaster rides. That being said we are much more athletic and have a lot of speed and skill. We will be a much stronger attacking side and should be a fun team to watch.”
Goalkeepers
HPU will feature a new face in net after the graduation of Marisa Abbott, the HPU Division I record holder in career saves, wins and shutouts. Junior Andrea Ritchie, Abbott’s backup in 2009, will be called upon to take over the starting role. As a freshman in 2008, Ritchie started nine games and posted a 1.04 goals-against average. She will look to rediscover that form in 2010. Behind Ritchie are two skilled freshman netminders, Jesse May and Amanda McGowan. May comes to HPU from Monte Vista High School in California where she stopped 307 shots in two seasons, including 199 her senior year. McGowan was a four-year starter at Conestoga Valley High School, setting the school record with 42 shutouts. Goalkeepers 0 Andrea Ritchie 1 Amanda McGowan 39 Jesse May

DEFENSE
The Panthers’ defense played a big role in the team’s late season turnaround and returns two of three starters this season. The backline will be anchored by juniors Brielle Spencer and Danniel Rosado. Both players earned All-Tournament recognition last season after helping post three-straight shutouts in the conference tournament. Spencer and Rosado are both skilled players who communicate well in the back and do a good job distributing the ball once they gain possession. The third spot in the back will be up for grabs after the graduation of senior captain Lauren Stockell. High Point has several players ready to step into the spot, led by second-team All-Big South honoree and a member of the Big South All-Freshman team, Janay Whittaker. Whittaker is a hard nosed player who saw time both in the back and at midfield last season. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native showed a nose for the goal, notching the game winner in three-straight games and finishing as the team leader in goals scored. Another returner pushing for the final starting spot is junior Robin Pecoraro. A starter for most of her freshman season, Pecoraro battled injuries throughout the season in 2009 but still managed to see time in all 24 games. A skilled passer, Pecoraro recorded two assists on the season. Sophomore Alex Cranston is an athletic and versatile player who will see time throughout the back line and can also contribute to the attack. Two newcomers that will also be fighting for playing time are redshirt freshman Meghan Krasnow and freshman Shannon Quackenbush. Krasnow transferred to HPU from the University of Louisville. She was a four-year letterwinner at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ealeigh, N.C., and was named both Conference and Region Player of the Year during her senior season. Quackenbush comes
from Warwick, N.Y. where she was a four-year letterwinner at Warwick Valley. Defenders 4 Janay Whittaker 8 Alex Cranston 18 Robin Pecoraro 19 Meghan Krasnow 21 Danniel Rosado 22 Brielle Spencer 24 Shannon Quackenbush

Midfield
High Point returns two starters in central midfield this season but is very young at the outside wing positions. In the center of the park senior captains Jillie Johnston and Sara Rager return after starting all of last season. Johnston, a holding midfielder, started 21 games and was a presence on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The Naperville, Ill., native scored just once last season but it came at the most opportune time as she headed in the overtime game winner against Radford in the Big South semifinals. Rager slides back from her forward position to take over as the main playmaker in the center of the park. The senior is currently third in HPU’s Division I history with 14 career assists, needing six more to tie the record of 20 held by Ryan Hays. Three returners will back up Johnston and Rager in center midfield - senior Rachel Parker and sophomores Katie Harris and Jenny Butler. Parker battled injuries in her first two seasons before emerging as a valuable contributor last season. The senior is a skilled ball handler who can win possession and pass confidently and will see plenty of time this season. Harris became an important sub in her first season at HPU playing from box-to-box and winning numerous balls. The sophomore also possesses

2010 Women’s Soccer fantastic vision and had several passes to spring the attack in 2009. Butler will split time between the back line and the midfield in 2010. A strong player with a booming leg, Butler will be a defensive player charged with winning balls and sending long passes over the opposing defense. The wings are a position of youth for HPU this season with only sophomore Danielle Schepler possessing any collegiate experience. She will be joined by freshmen Brooke Lisson, Alexie Parpan, Cary Ann Parrish and Sarah Sweeney. Schepler, the veteran of the group, played in 17 games with one start during her freshman campaign. Lisson played for four-years at Wando High School and was a two-time All-State honoree. Parpan played at Cary Christian High School and finished her career with 41 goals and 40 assists, helping to guide her team to four-straight state championship appearances. Parrish was a three-time All-Conference honoree and was named to the Southern California Senior All-Star team in 2010. Sweeney was a four-year letterwinner at the Rivers School in Massachusetts and was a three-time All-Conference honoree. All five players possess fantastic speed and the ability to both dribble at a defender and cross the ball into the box. Forwards
The Panthers are excited about the attacking prowess of their young crop of forwards. Junior Katie Taber is the lone returning starter but she will be joined by four newcomers - junior Margaret Fanning and freshmen Becca Hemby, Kelli Joline and Sammy Vercellino. Taber was High Point’s most consistently dangerous attacking weapon last season. Though she scored just two goals, she led the team in shots and shots on goal. A strong player with the ball at her feet, Taber looks poised to make a jump in the coming season. Fanning transferred to HPU from Francis Marion where she had been recruited by HPU head coach Marty Beall. A former defender, Fanning has been moved to the front of the attack where she can use her strong leg and nose for the net. All three freshmen come to High Point after prolific prep careers which saw them score a combined 158 goals. Hemby was a three-year letterwinner at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School and set the school records for career points with 112 and career goals with 44. Joline was ranked as one of the top players in the state of Pennsylvania and finished her career with a school record 54 goals and 28 assists. She was named a 2009 NSCAA All-American. Vercellino was named one of the top player to watch in Indiana by ESPN Rise. In her four-year prep career, she compiled 60 goals and 36 assists. Marty Beall
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009
Marty Beall returns for his second season at the helm of the High Point University women’s soccer team after guiding the squad to its third Big South Championship since 2003 in his first season as HPU head coach. The Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just five goals in their final 10 games and carried a clean sheet through the entire conference tournament. Senior Marisa Abbott set an HPU Division I record with 134 saves on the season. Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from success at the Division II level to continued success at the Division I level. In his head coaching career, Beall owns a 5644-7 record despite having to play outside a conference and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs, including teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference and Atlantic 10. During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons while posting a 33-10-4 (74.5 percent) mark at home. Beall is also familiar with the Big South Conference having crafted a 14-6-1 career mark against current members of the Big South Conference, including a 2-0 record against High Point. Under Beall’s tutelage, several Francis Marion players garnered league and national recognitions. Beall produced six Peach Belt Conference (PBC) All-Conference team 4
selections during his tenure along with four PBC All-Tournament honorees. In addition, four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades. In addition to success on the field, Beall’s teams have also demonstrated excellence in the classroom. Francis Marion earned four NSCAA Team Academic Awards during Beall’s tenure. The award recognizes programs that maintain a 3.0 cumulative team GPA. FMU’s 2006-07 squad ranked third among all NCAA Division I programs with a 3.59 GPA. Individually, student-athletes under Beall’s guidance have also shined earning five NSCAA/adidas Scholar AllRegion and two NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America honors. Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who established the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000. Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the FMU program in 1999. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels and served as head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played one season for the nationally-ranked Mont-
gomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. Beall was an All-State prep performer as a senior at Damascus (Md.) High School and played eight seasons for the Bethesda Soccer Club. He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is the head coach of the Under-16 girls team at the Piedmont Triad Football Club. He also served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association. A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (36) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003.
