HIGH POINT 2011 Women’s Soccer
UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book
Season Preview After winning a share of its first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship and its second– straight Big South Tournament Championship last season, the High Point University women’s soccer team enters 2011 as the team to beat. The Panthers finished the 2010 season with a record of 11-11-1 overall, tying the team’s DI record for wins in a season, and 6-2-1 in the Big South. HPU won its second-straight tournament title and its third in four years by winning three-straight games with identical 1-0 scorelines including an overtime win in the championship on an amazing bicycle kick goal off the foot of Jillie Johnston. HPU went on to face the University of Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship and held its first ever lead in an NCAA game on a goal by Kelli Joline before ultimately falling by a score of 4-1. High Point returns 19 letter winners and eight starters from last year’s squad, including two firstteam All-Conference selections in Joline and junior defender Janay Whittaker. “We set our sights pretty high this year,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Our ultimate objective is to win the conference championship. That will always be our No. 1 goal. We have achieved it each of the past two seasons but we understand that repeating a third time is extremely difficult to say the least. We have to work even harder than we have in the past.” For the first time in program history the Panthers were picked first in the Big South Preseason Poll, garnering five first place votes and 108 total points to squeak past Radford, which was picked second. “Coming back as two-time defending champions puts a huge bull’s eye on our back,” Beall said. “We know that every team will be gunning for us and we understand that. Our focus is going to be on each individual game and playing the best we can as a unit. We aren’t going to worry too much about the other teams gunning for us and will instead focus on making sure that we give our best effort to be successful as a team every time out.” Goalkeepers High Point returns two goalkeepers in 2011 who saw action during the 2010 campaign in senior Andrea Ritchie and sophomore Jesse May. Both players will compete for playing time this season in net for the Panthers. “We definitely have two quality goalkeepers this season in Andrea Ritchie and Jesse May,” Beall said. “Ritchie is a senior and was the starter last season and May is a very talented sophomore who saw time last season. Both are doing a very good job right now and really challenging each other. I am confident that whoever is in net will do a fantastic job for us.” Ritchie started 22 games for HPU in 2010 and

is an experienced keeper who uses great awareness and positioning to keep the opposing offense at bay. She enters her final collegiate season needing just seven wins to break the school’s DI career record of 21 held by Marissa Abbott. May appeared in five games with one start during her freshman season. She is a very athletic keeper who has already made some highlight saves in her short HPU career.. Goalkeepers No. Name (Class) Record GAA Saves 0 Andrea Ritchie (Sr.) 11-10-0 1.55 85 39 Jesse May (So.) 0-1-1 0.42 10 Defense The Panthers return all three starters from a defense that allowed just eight goals in 12 matches against Big South opponents and posted threestraight shutouts in the 2010 Big South Championship. The experienced backline includes seniors Brielle Spencer and Danniel Rosado and first-team All-Big South member Janay Whittaker. “We return a great core in the back in Brielle Spencer, Danniel Rosado and Janay Whittaker,” Beall said. “Having those three all return will really help our defensive unit. They work so well together and really understand our team tactics.” This season will mark the third-straight season that Rosado and Spencer have started next to each other in the HPU defense. Both are skilled defenders who are not only adept at winning balls, but very good at playing them out of the back to start the attack. Rosado also has a very strong leg and is one of HPU’s primary players to take free kicks. Whittaker emerged as one of the conference’s best defenders as a sophomore in 2010 and was named the 2010 Big South Tournament MVP. The
outside back combines excellent athleticism and a great sense of field awareness to snuff out the attack. She is also a skilled one-on-one defender who won’t hesitate to move forward with the ball. In two seasons, Whittaker has scored four goals, all game winners. Another returner that will provide depth in the defense is sophomore Shannon Quackenbush. She is a skilled defender that can play all along the back line. High Point adds three newcomers to the defense in junior Jenny Ashurst and freshmen Alice LeCompte and Melissa Sweredowski. Ashurst transferred to HPU from Anne Arundel Community College where she was named to the NJCAA National Tournament Team. A speedy player with a great left foot, Ashurst will play both in the back and on the wing for the Panthers. LeCompte was a four-year letter winner at Arundel High School in Gambrills, Md., where she was a two-time All-Conference selection. She is a tall presence in the back who is very good in the air and will play primarily in the center of the defense. Sweredowski comes to High Point from Huntingtown High School in Huntingtown, Md. She was a four-time All-County selection. Sweredowski will primarily be used as an outside back in 2011. HIGH POINT 2011 Women’s Soccer Midfield High Point lost three starters out of its midfield to graduation in Sara Rager, Jillie Johnston and Rachael Parker, but the Panthers still boast a strong group of players heading into the 2011 campaign with three starters returning and two reserves who saw extensive minutes last season ready to step in. “We have a lot of flexibility and some great players that we are excited about in the midfield this season,” Beall said. “Having players like Katie Taber, Katie Harris, Becca Hemby, Sammy Vercellino and Brooke Lisson all back gives us an abundance of experience and skill in the middle of the field. They also understand what it takes to win in a tight game which will help us down the road.” Katie Harris returns for her third season with High Point and will look to fill the defensive midfielder position vacated by Parker. Harris played in 21 games with three starts for HPU in 2010. She is a very good two-way player with good vision and passing skills which will help her act as go-between for the defense and attack. Backing up Harris this season will be freshman Claire Kelly who comes to High Point from Tuscarora High School. She was named second-team All-State as a senior and was a four-time All-Area selection. Kelly is a strong player who can win balls both in the air and on the ground and will provide a degree of bite to the midfield. After starting most of last year up top as a forward, senior captain Katie Taber will drop back into the attacking central midfield position filled by Rager last season. She is a very good one-on-one player whose quality passing should fit very will in the center of the park. She will be joined in the attacking midfield position by sophomore Becca Hemby who started 20 games last season. She is an excellent dribbler and a dangerous player both in the air and with her feet in the box. Two returners who will also see significant time in 2011 are junior Jenny Butler and sophomore Brooke Lisson. Butler has been a versatile player for HPU in her first two seasons and will play primarily in central midfield this season. The Naperville, Ill., native is a physical player who will win a lot of balls in the midfield. She also has a powerful leg which makes her a danger to score from distance. Lisson appeared in all 23 games last season and had 14 starts. She is a very good player with the ball at her feet, capable of dribbling through traffic and delivering a dangerous pass to spring the attack. Two newcomers looking to challenge for playing time right away are freshmen Taber Lewis from Cary, N.C., and Meghann Jackson from Arnold, Md. Lewis played club soccer with CASL and helped guide the team to six North Carolina State Club Championships. She is a skilled and fluid player who will provide an added layer of creativity to the central midfield in 2011. Jackson was a four-year All-State honoree at Broadneck High School. She is a speedy

midfielder who can play both in the middle of the park and out on the wings. High Point returns solid experience and a lot of speed at the wing positions in junior Danielle Schepler and sophomore Sammy Vercellino. Schepler played both on the outside and up top as a forward last season. She is a strong passer who is comfortable delivering a cross into the box with either foot. Vercellino finished last season as HPU’s right back, but the second-team All-Big South selection will move up this season to take over one of the Panther’s wing positions. As one of the fastest girls on the High Point squad this season, Vercellino will be a dangerous option in the attack on the outside. She is a skilled dribbler and an excellent crosser who will command plenty of attention from the opponents’ outside backs. Backing up Schepler and Vercellino will be junior Alex Cranston and freshman Jacky Kessler. Cranston appeared in 15 games for HPU last season playing as both an outside back and outside midfielder. A tireless worker on the flank, Cranston will serve as a valuable outlet for the attack on the outside. Kessler comes to HPU from Middletown High School in Middletown, Md. She was a twotime first-team All-State selection. She led her prep team to the 2010 Maryland State Championship and a perfect 18-0-0 record while finishing with 58 points on 23 goals and 12 assists. A speedy attacker with dangerous finishing ability, Kessler will provide valuable minutes to the Panthers this season. She will spearhead a talented corp of forwards that features both returning experience as well as some talented new faces. “We have some skilled returners in our attack who will contribute a great deal this season,” Beall said. “Having Kelli Joline in up top is great for us. She is playing better now than she did at any point during her freshman season.” Joline earned first-team All-Big South honors in her freshman season after starting all 23 games
and finishing third in the conference in goals. The Lancaster, Pa. native got off to a slow start in her first collegiate season but finished strong with 10 goals in her final 12 games. She tallied HPU’s first DI hat trick with three goals against Gardner-Webb and set the HPU single-season DI records for both goals and points. Backing up Joline up top will be sophomore Cary Ann Parrish and a trio of freshmen in Sarah Sermonet, Alexis Shay and Madison Spagnoletti. Parrish played in 21 games during her freshman season and finished with one goal. A speedy player, Parrish can play both on the wing and up the middle of the park. Sermonet was a four-year letter winner at Brentwood Academy in Brentwood Tennessee. She finished her career as Brentwood’s all-time leading scorer with 49 goals and 42 assists and was named All-State as a senior. A tall player with a powerful shot, Sermonet will provide a different look to the HPU attack. Shay comes to HPU from Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Md. She was listed as one of the top players in the state of Maryland by ESPN Rise and was named to the NSCAA All-Region team as a senior after finishing with 12 goals and 16 assists. A talented attacker who can cause damage both with her shot and with her passing, Shay will see solid minutes in her first collegiate season. Spagnoletti was a four-year letter winner at Elkin High School in Elkin, N.C., where she set the all-time scoring record with 100 goals and 45 assists. She was a two-time All-State and All-Region selection. Marty Beall
Head Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009
Marty Beall has guided the High Point University women’s soccer team to back-to-back Big South Championships in his two seasons at the helm of the Panthers. Beall and the women’s soccer team now enter the 2011 season looking to be the first team in Big South history to win three-straight titles. In 2010, High Point tied its own Div. I record for wins in a season with 11 and went 6-2-1 in Big South play to earn a share of its first-ever regular season Big South Championship. HPU then went on to win three-straight Big South tournament games by identical scores of 1-0 to secure its second-straight championship and its third in four seasons. Freshman Kelli Joline set an HPU DI single-season record with 11 goals, including one against Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and was named first-team All-Big South in her first collegiate season. Three other players earned All-Big South honors as Whittaker was also named to the first team and both senior Sara Rager and freshman Sammy Vercellino were named to the second team. In Beall’s first season, the Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just eight goals in their final 13 games and carried a clean sheet through the entire conference tournament. Senior Marisa Abbott set an HPU Div. I record with 134 saves on the season. Senior Laura Eldridge was named first-team All-Big South and Whittaker was named second-team All-Big South. Beall’s teams have prided themselves on defense in his two seasons, allowing just 15 goals in 24 games against Big South opponents and allowing more than two goals in a game just eight times. With its three shutouts in the 2010 Big South Tournament, High Point set a new conference record with six consecutive shutouts in tournament games. The Panthers have never allowed a goal in Big South tournament play under Beall. During Beall’s tenure, High Point has played some of the best teams in the country. The Panthers have faced off against such teams as Wake Forest, North Carolina, Maryland, Duke, 4
Virginia Tech, NC State, Clemson, Charlotte, the College of Charleston and UNC Greensboro. On Sept. 12 2010, HPU earned its first-ever win over an ACC opponent with a 4-3 win over Clemson in Columbia, S.C. Off the field Beall’s teams have demonstrated excellence in the classroom. The Panthers were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2010 after finishing with a team GPA of 3.54, the highest of any High Point team. Brielle Spencer was also named the 2010 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from success at the Division II level to continued success at the Division I level. In his head coaching career, Beall owned a 56-44-7 record at FMU despite having to play outside a conference and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs. During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under Beall’s tutelage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades. Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who established the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000. Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the FMU program in 1999. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels and served as head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played on season for
the nationally-ranked Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. Beall was an All-State prep performer as a senior at Damascus (Md.) High School and played eight seasons for the Bethesda Soccer Club. He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is the head coach of the Under-16 girls team at the Piedmont Triad Football Club. He also served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association. A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (37) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003. He married his wife Paige in 2011 and the couple lives in High Point, N.C.
