Beautiful Silver Creek Falls.
Planning A Summer Staycation By Rod Porsche Albany Visitor’s Association Gas prices have been soaring this spring, shooting past $4.00 per gallon in Oregon just in time for the peak summer driving season. When it costs $100 or more to fill your tank, you might think twice about jumping in the car for an out of state vacation this summer. This is the year to enjoy an amazing staycation right here in Oregon. There’s so much to do and see, where do you start? It’s time to get to Silver Falls State Park. Just 35 miles northeast of Albany, Silver Falls offers 9,000 acres of spectacular scenery. Hike along The Trail of Ten Falls to enjoy ten breathtaking waterfalls, four of which you can actually walk behind the falls to feel the misty, crisp spray. The kids will love going for a swim in Silver Creek along a developed, but unsupervised swimming area. Tired from all the hiking and swimming? Tent or RV camping, rustic cabins or yurts are available for those wanting to get the most out of their staycation. Want to get away to the wine country? Don’t spend
big bucks on fuel traveling to California’s Napa Valley, discover Willamette Valley wineries and enjoy award-winning wine close to home! Did you know that Willamette Valley Vineyards was named 2011 Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine? Just 15 miles north of Albany, WVV offers a panoramic view from their newly updated observation tower. They also offer some great tasting wines along with a behind the scenes tours of the wine making process. Over 150 Willamette Valley wineries and tasting rooms will be open during the Memorial Day weekend. Linn County’s own Marks Ridge Winery will be offering great views to go along with their award-winning Pinot Noir. North Albany’s Springhill Cellars kicks off their 2012 season during the holiday weekend too. Whether it’s a day trip or a weekend getaway, just get there. See all that Oregon has to offer this summer — the coast, the cascades, crater lake, central Oregon, southern Oregon — see it all, one staycation at a time. Albany Visitors Association can help plan your adventure with maps, brochures and some great ideas. We’re at 250 Broadalbin St. SW in Historic Downtown Albany or at: www.albanyvisitors.com.

By KAren Rogers To most people today, Memorial Day (May 28) is the official kick-start to the one-hundred days of summer that end on Labor Day. Historically, the actual purpose was to honor the war dead, both North and South, of the Civil War. In 1865 in the town of Waterloo, N.Y., a local druggist, Henry C. Welles, supported by a Union general, John B. Murray, gathered a group of veterans to form a committee to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers. On May 5, 1866 the flags were lowered to halfstaff, mourning banners and swags of evergreen were put up and a parade marched to all three cemeteries, where memorial speeches were given. In 1868 the citizens of Waterloo, working with the Grand Army of the Republic who sponsored Decoration Day celebrations, moved the date to May 30. New York became the first state to legalize the holiday in 1873 and other states quickly followed. As years passed and other wars were fought, Memorial Day became a commemoration of all lives lost in military engagements. Governor Nelson Rockefeller formally proclaimed Waterloo as the official original site in 1966. Congress then passed a resolution and President Lyndon Johnson signed the papers on May 17, 1966. Today there are parades and a major car race. Barbecues and picnics are held by families. But we must remember the real reason for the day and pause to honor those who gave all to keep us free.

Job A Great Commandment Leader Health By Kevin Ferguson
Can you think of someone that has been a godly influence in your life? I have had the privilege of working the last two years for Mark and his wife Timmy, owners of Tree of Life Christian Outlet. God’s Word reminds us of the Great Commandment, “Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all yourmind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39. Mark and Timmy humbly demonstrate this love for Christ to all those they encounter. Mark has often said that selling books is not enough. He has truly embraced the vision of reaching people with the Word of God here and abroad by partnering with ministries to send Bibles to those in need. Last year we were able to send
thousands of Bibles to Africa with the support of all our guests who by faith join Mark and Tree of Life’s vision. Even though budgets are tighter and there have been economic challenges,Mark has exampled trust in Jesus by continuing this amazing opportunity to send Bibles to Africa. This year we have the goal of sending 8,000 New Living Translation Study Bibles from Tyndale. With your donation of $5.00,you can send two Bibles. This is almost the price of a large size latte at one of your favorite coffee shops or a gallon of gas. I truly believe the reason Tree of Life Christian Outlet has survived through some of the worst financial conditions in our Country’s history is due to Mark’s obedience to put othersfirst above his own gain. This labor and sacrifice of love from our Great Commandment Leaders, Mark and Timmy, has truly made an eternal impact for the Kingdom of God.

Blood Clots Deep venous thrombosis is a fancy medical term for a relatively common medical condition: a blood clot in a nonsurface vein, usually occurring in the leg. Clots of this type form when there is an interruption in the body’s circulatory system. Imagine the heart as shipping hub. The heart is constantly shipping “truckloads” of nutrient- rich blood to the far corners of our body via major arteries. Our arteries are like a modern freeway, allowing blood to be efficiently delivered to the consumer (assorted body parts). The empty trucks return to the heart via the venous system. Picture the venous system as being like the old highways: they are narrower, have many smaller roads merging into them requiring traffic controls, and (because we are working against gravity) the entire highway is a steady uphill grade. When “traffic “on the venous “highway” is interrupted, trucks cannot proceed. Newly arriving trucks cannot get onto the highway. Soon we have a back-up of trucks waiting for the road to clear (at this point you are likely experiencing swollen ankles). If the flow of “traffic” does not improve, the scene is set for a massive multi-truck pile-up on the highway. We have a clot. Symptoms of a blood clot may include: swelling, pain, redness/discoloration, and heat. These signs are usually present in
only one leg. A clot in the leg requires prompt medical attention to prevent serious complications which may include permanent disability or death. Generally, Pamela things that affect Becker, RpH our circulatory system, such as: Rice’s heart conditions, Pharmacy, Gifts & Wine diabetes, advanced age, smoking, obesity, pregnancy, and A “Pill Box Pharmacy” inactivity, affect our clot risk. Estrogencontaining drugs also have a reputation for increasing clot risk. We can’t always control our risk factors, but there are some things we can do to mitigate them. Begin by discussing your clot-risk potential with your physician. If you are in the high risk category, your doctor may prescribe medication to control the risk. Secondarily, moving the muscles in the legs assists our “delivery trucks” in their uphill journey back to the heart. This does not require a gym membership! Everyday movements like sitting, rising, and walking will get the job done. If you cannot move about, perhaps due to an injury or travel, here is a simple exercise that can be done while sitting, or laying down: With the toe of one foot, slowly and deliberately trace each letter of the alphabet in the air, then repeat with the other foot. The pointing and flexing of your foot will cause the leg muscles to contract, thereby assisting those Blood Clots continued on page 10

Healthcare
Healthcare is one of the hottest topics in the country right now. It’s at the center of our economic crisis since the cost of healthcare is increasing at 4-5 times the rate of inflation and it represents 17% of the country’s GDP. Obamacare is in front of the supreme court and meanwhile people are getting sicker and sicker. It’s estimated that 1/3 of the children born in 2000 will eventually have type 2 diabetes. It is also estimated that this will be the first generation of children born with a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Cost isn’t the only issue. The way we practice healthcare in this country is broken. Ask just about any doctor and they will shamefully admit that their practice is heavily influenced by diagnosing and treating and using procedures that insurance companies will pay for. It’s a wonder that we are so concerned that many people don’t have health insurance when these companies and their payment practices are heavily responsible for why things are so screwed up. Mandatory coverage would allow them to fully dictate the course of American healthcare. What do you get for your coverage? Medical error is one of the leading causes of death in America. An estimated 180,000 Americans die every year from medication errors, infection obtained in a hospital, or

malpractice. In the time it took me to write this article ten people died because of one of these mistakes. All medications carry side effects. You’ve seen the commercials right? Bloody stool, joint pain, low blood pressure, high blood Dr. Jason pressure, flatulence, and in some cases Young death. The “cure” is often worse than the disease. In 15 years from now our healthcare system will be completely different. Either we will realize the madness of our present course and make an about face in the right direction or the current system will obliterate our economy and ultimately our society leaving us sick and unable to do anything about it. Who gets to decide the outcome? Is it the doctors? Is it the politicians? Is it the Pharmaceutical companies? Each of these players has a part but ultimately the deciding factor is YOU! Think about this... Cancer is not on the rise because cancer has some secret agenda to take over the world. Obesity is not an airborne virus. Diabetes did not invade our water supply. Autoimmune diseases are not holding the country at gun point. These are conditions our society has chosen by lifestyle. It’s in the food we eat (or don’t eat). It’s in the activities we choose. It’s in the stress we subject

Credit Union vs. Bank: Idea Which is Best for You? Everyone needs a place to store their money, and unless you plan on keeping it under your mattress or in the cookie jar, you’ll need to have an account with either a bank or a credit union. Aside from providing a safe place to store your assets, financial institutions also provide other benefits, such as a place to cash your checks, obtain money orders and wire funds. A popular misconception is that a bank is the same thing as a credit union, but in reality, they are as different as night and day. Choosing between a bank and a credit union should reflect your own personal self interest, and should be decided after examining your particular financial situation. Banks (measured by number of customers) are the most popular financial institutions. Most are run by a group of investors who have a large amount of capital, which goes into the funding for the bank. Some are nationwide – such as Chase Bank or Wells Fargo-while others are smaller, local institutions. Either way, a bank’s primary purpose is to make money for the investors and for the stock holders. Banks are federally insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. A
paid Board of Directors makes all of the decisions for the bank, which are usually profit-driven and hold little benefit for the customers of the bank. Anyone, in any city or state, can open an Darin account with a bank, Klarr and customers hold SELCO no voting privileges Community or decision-making CU Branch power within the Manager institution. Credit unions, on the other hand, are designed to serve a particular group or neighborhood. People who use credit unions for their financial services are members of the credit union, rather than customers. Since credit unions are not-forprofit organizations, the profits incurred by the credit union directly benefit the members after covering overhead costs. Credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration, and are democratically controlled by the members. This means that members have more say in how the credit union is run, and hold decision-making power. Members elect a Board of Directors – rather than hiring one – who are chosen to fully represent the members in making decisions and upholding policies. Many people choose credit unions over banks because the former allows Credit Union vs Bank continued on page 17

Stuff Chairs ... We’ve Got to Have Them!
Travel
There are many things in life that we take for granted. When is the last time you were truly thankful for air, water or even a warm meal? For many people, our lives are so full of blessing that we forget about all of the simple things that make our lives to much easier and better. Just think about how different our lives would be without one simple thing: chairs. Can you imagine life without any chairs? Think about all the places you rely on chairs to make your life comfortable and easy. Remember, for example, the many years you spent in school. Other than perhaps story time in kindergarten, your time in school was spent sitting in chairs to learn. Our lives would be very different if we had to make it through math, science and English classes sitting on the floor. Or think about the lunch room. Can you imagine eating lunch on the floor with all your friends each day? Think about the blessing that chairs are to our lives…what about restaurants? In some countries it is common to sit on the floor to eat. Can you imagine going out for a fancy dinner with your family or friends and

having to sit in your nice suit or dress on the floor? Of course not! If you love going to the movies then you appreciate the comfort of the theater chairs that you sit in each time you enjoy a new film. Picture going to the movie theater for the next great film and having to sit in a mass of strangers on the floor in front of the screen…Sound strange? Next time you head into a theater and sit in the chairs smile and are thankful. The favorite pace for chairs seems to be our home. There is nothing better than coming home and enjoying the latest good news in HighPoints from your favorite rocking chair or reading a book in the comfy recliner. Can you imagine your home without chairs? Once you start thinking about all of the places that you enjoy sitting on chairs it isn’t hard to imagine how different our lives would be without them. So sit down in one of your favorite chairs, enjoy it, and be very thankful you have it today. If you don’t have a favorite chair come see us at Rife’s where the selection is endless and the price is always right! Call them today at 541-758-2020.

and installations for Linn and Benton counties. Servco grew into a large industrial mechanical contractor working statewide in the 1990’s. We worked on many fun projects like the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Linn County Fairgrounds. Two of the original five employees, Dave Hickey and Ivan Stutzman, are still actively involved in Servco and their advice and historical experience in construction has been vital to our successful survival through this recession. Servco has since returned to its roots, offering plumbing, heating and air conditioning service and installation to residential and small commercial businesses in the local area. We are able to focus on specific areas of our business and keep our people trained on current technologies. This helps us keep our technicians knowledgeable about the operations of equipment of all ages. We offer products made in America whenever possible and encourage our suppliers to provide us with sources to locally made products. Most of our employees have been with the company more than seven years. Many have worked for the company more than 20 years. Servco provides a great working environment for our people and that helps us to retain great employees for a long time. Most of our employees own stock in our company, so we are invested in making sure you are taken care of courteously and professionally. We are here to serve you!

At home, at church or in the local park you would find the quintessential Ice Cream Social. At fancy parties in homes, ice cream was served on special sets of cut glass, a large tray, and individual dishes for all. Outdoors and at less formal gatherings things were more relaxed (except for the fact that the ice cream had to be churned by hand). Kids were the usual recruits. Parties that center on ice cream are still popular and a lot easier! With the addition of ice cream pies, cakes, and even cupcakes, there is something for all ages! Ice cream cakes and pies serve several people, or you can chose a variety and manage serving sizes with ice cream cupcakes. Your full service Coldstone Creamery allows everyone to enjoy their own creation! So plan your own ice cream social and let Coldstone Creamery help! Wonderful Sugar Cookies
By Karen Rogers
Sugar cookie are one of the greatest taste treats in the universe. Simple, pure and delicious they are good anytime and anywhere. This recipe is an old-timer and is made with a “cooky” press. Mine is my Grandmothers. The box is dated 1928 and it has 17 different patterns, some no longer available. My mind boggles when I think how many cookies have been made with this venerable tool. Along with my knives, stainless tongs and old iron pancake turner, this is one of my favorite utensils. It just feels good. To bake these properly you will need clean, Ungreased pans. Parchment paper will not work. For best results, cream the butter and sugar for about five minutes. Sift the cream of tartar and baking soda before adding them. Do not sift the flour, just scoop and sweep with your hand. I also recommend Butter Crisco as the shortening. Set the oven at 350 degrees. In a stand mixer bowl combine 1 C butter Crisco and 1 C sugar and beat on medium speed about five minutes until the mixture changes color and becomes pale. This beats air into the mix and helps break down the sugar crystals, making a smoother dough. One at a time, add three eggs, beating well between, 1 ½ to 2 tsps vanilla, ½ tsp salt and 1 tsp baking soda sifted with 2 tsps cream of tartar. Beat and scrape down the sides. Add 3 ½ C flour and mix well, scraping the paddle and bowl twice.
Idea
Delicious sugar cookies are good any time of year.
Fill the press and make the cookies on a clean ungreased sheet. Bake until very lightly browned. Cool on racks. As soon as they are cool, seal them in zip-lock bags and freeze. They will keep in the freeezer 2-3 months and on the shelf about a week. Yeah, right. They will disappear so fast you won’t believe it. “Cooky” presses are still available in stores or you can find them in Thrift shops or at garage sales. I prefer the screw-action ones to the trigger activated ”shooters”. Best of all, these little sweeties still taste just as good as they did when I was a kid! It’s nice to know that sometimes time does stand still!

Everyone at Rainbow Carpet Cleaning is thrilled to be a new partner in the Points for Profit program! Actually, Rainbow Carpet Cleaning has been in the works since 1973. That was the year Paul and Charlene Workinger married and started their family business. Early on Paul and Char decided that having a home based business would allow them to stay in the Willamette Valley where they were both raised. Paul and Char also wanted to have a business that they could share with their four children Luke, Autunm, David and Spring. With his background in Chemistry, Paul quickly came to love the technical aspects of a carpet cleaning business. Paul and Char also quickly realized that it was an honor to be cleaning in their clients homes and they excelled in making sure all clients received a “WOW” experience. Although their clients tend to be mostly women, Rainbow Carpet Cleaning realizes that the origin of most of their work comes from kids, pets and husbands and their messes! The mission of the company is to help wives and mothers to love their kids, pets and husbands again! The services offered by Rainbow Carpet Cleaning are many: - Carpet/ Upholstery cleaning and protection - Water Damage Restoration - Pet Damage Repair - Tile and Grout Cleaning

If you haven’t already done it, sit down and make some rough plans for what you want to do in your vegetable garden this year. 1) Make a list of what you want to grow based on both what you like and what you are curious to try. 2) Make a sketch that is at least roughly to scale. Even experienced gardeners misjudge and plant things too close together, so look at seed packages for the needed spacing. 3) Plant incrementally rather than all at once. See below for a few techniques. 4) Find a regional planting chart (see sources below) so you are planting at the right times for our area. 5) Prepare beds ahead of time. Taking the time to till, turn the soil, add chicken manure (or your favorite blend of stinky stuff), compost, etc.

Ways to Stretch Your Harvest A little planning and good timing provides a variety of delicious vegetables over a longer period of time. Here are some methods that will keep your garden pumping out something delicious right up through the fall, and
maybe longer! • Successive or interval sowing: Instead of planting a whole row of the same vegetable at once, perform Word several smaller From sowings, each of the same vegetable, at WILCO 2-3 week intervals. Do this with lettuce Brian for instance, and Coons, assure yourself of Wilco a steady supply of crunchy greens for your salad bowl each week. Otherwise, your overabundant crop gets bitter before you can pick and use it (or you use up a lot of space growing lettuce for your friends and neighbors). • Succession planting: This just means that you follow one crop with another, usually a different one, in the same place during the same season. This can be done because there are short/early season and long/late season crops. In one spot you might start in early spring with some radishes and arugula, which prefer cool weather and grow to maturity quickly. Follow those with tomatoes in May or June (and you can speed production by buying and transplanting quality gallon size veggies).

Manager’s Corner By Kathy Dennis, Director of Points for Profit Q: We have several businesses that support our organization that aren’t a part of Points for Profit. Would it be within the rules for us to contact our donor base and let them know that by sending in copies of their receipts or year-end totals it could help us earn funds without any additional dollars out of pocket? We know there is an exclusivity rule so we wanted to be certain before reaching out. A: GREAT question! You can absolutely reach out to any business or person! In fact we have businesses that support Points for Profit non-profit organizations already! Most send reports in at yearend with their totals and tell us which non-profit they want to support! It really is a great way to not only support their favorite non-profit organization but the local business and the community! So reach out to all and let’s keep the momentum going!

Spring Cleaning Your CPAP Hello all! This is Anne Turner with A Turning Leaf Home Medical Equipment. Spring time is finally here and while many people make a point to clean their homes, it is important not to forget about your CPAP equipment. While many CPAP patients’ make a point to clean their mask and tubing regularly, many times patients forget to clean the CPAP machine itself. While you do not need to clean your CPAP machine as often as your mask and tubing, it is a good idea to clean the device from time to time. Since the CPAP draws air in from its surroundings, this causes it to become dusty much faster than other household items. Since the CPAP is used by your bedside, this accumulating dust can have an adverse effect on the health of you and your bed partner. Not to mention the fact that accumulating dust on the CPAP will cause filter’s to become dirty faster and could also potentially cause electrical problems for the unit. But do not fear, because all of these undesirable consequences can be avoided simply by periodically making sure that your CPAP machine is free
from dust and other germs that can accumulate. Here at A Turning Leaf Home Medical, we provide a CPAP device cleaning and inspection free of Ann charge and we will Turner, teach you and yours A Turning simple and time LEaf Home saving methods to MEdical maximize the life of your sleep apnea machine and sleep apnea supplies. Tips on Living Green
Going
Homes and households consume a large amount of energy and products to keep in good working order. I have compiled a list of helpful ideas to help the environment, save you money and assist you in living green. Recycle! There are recycling centers where you can drop off metal, glass, paper, cardboard and plastic. Our local sanitation company supplies us with a recycling bin. It’s amazing when you recycle how much it saves the environment and decreases the amount of garbage thrown away. Energy Efficient AppliancesEnergy Star rated is a great place to start. These appliances meet strict standards of energy usage. Switching to an energy efficient washer or dryer and using cold water can save you cash and energy. Unplug Appliances- If an appliance isn’t in use it is still pulling a small amount of power. So unplug those small appliances when they are not in use. Small changes can have a big impact especially if everyone does it. On demand hot water heatersThese compact units are great for

families wanting to heat water on demand. You’ll never run out of hot water and you’ll use less energy, only heating water when it’s needed. Use a laptop- A Nancy laptop computer Kruse uses less energy Keller than a desktop unit. Williams An extra bonus REalty is saving space in your home. Change lightbulbs to CFLs- These look a little funny and cost slightly more initially but they last longer and saves a lot of money and energy usage. Check for drafty areas- Air escapes through doors and windows not properly sealed and wastes energy. Caulk or add weather stripping to these areas and save money, energy and you’ll keep warmer. Upgrade insulation- A well insulated home can save you a lot of money. Insulation keeps heating and cooling expenses lower and goes a long way towards saving energy. April Showers Brought May Flowers ... and Kittens!
Cheer
By Marti Cersovski SafeHaven Humane Society Spring is upon us, and in the animal care world that means one thing: kitten season. Kitten season is that time of year when kittens are typically born, flooding shelters and cat rescue groups with newborns that are too young to be adopted. This presents numerous challenges for shelters and rescue groups who are faced with trying to find temporary homes for the kittens until they are old enough to be adopted. The shelter environment is not suitable for newborn kittens, as their immune systems are not yet developed, so they are highly susceptible to illness. It’s always ideal to keep kittens with their mom until they are at least 6 weeks old. Fostering is a great way to help shelters through kitten season. During this time of year, the need for foster families dramatically increases. “During kitten season we get so overwhelmed with cats that we don’t

have enough foster care or kennels. We can get as many as 50 to 70 calls everyday about homeless cats and kittens.” said SafeHaven Humane Society’s Foster Care & Rescue Coordinator, Hannah Sheler. “Bottle babies are especially hard to find temporary shelter for during kitten season because it takes a special person to get up every 2 to 3 hours during the night to care for and feed them.” In addition to caring for animals too young to be adopted, foster parents enable SafeHaven Humane Society to place animals into temporary homes if there isn’t space at the shelter or for injured dogs and cats. Giving these animals a little extra training, attention and socialization or time to grow and heal allows us to be able to help. Want to help? For more information about SafeHaven Humane Society’s foster program and how you can participate, please call Hannah at 541.928.6280.

Itchy skin is a condition that we see every day in veterinary practice. Allergies are by far the most common cause of itchy skin in dogs and cats. Allergies in dogs and cats can be separated into three major categories; Fleas, Food and Seasonal Allergies. Allergies are for the most part a protein based phenomena. For animals with flea bite hypersensitivity the reaction is to flea salivary proteins. Animals with food based allergies react to certain proteins in their diet. Proteins found in wheat, beef, dairy, corn and chicken have been known to cause allergic reactions in dogs with food allergies. Believe it or not some cats are allergic to fish. Seasonal allergies are also protein based in the form of many environmental allergens like pollens, mold spores, skin dander etc. The first step to finding out why are pets are itchy involves a trip to the veterinarian. He or she will eliminate other less common causes of itchiness like sarcoptic mange and lice as well as determine whether or not your pet needs any medical treatment for opportunistic skin infections that can arise in the face of an allergic skin reaction. Certain patterns of itchiness can give us clues as to the source of the allergens. Flea allergies in dogs have a characteristic pattern involving the back half of the body that intensifies as you move towards the tail along the back. If you see this pattern your dog has flea allergies whether you see fleas or not. Food allergies and seasonal allergies are indistinguishable from each other based

on their skin patterns. These patients tend to be itchy all over, not just the back half. Itchiness can concentrate around the eyes, ears, feet, and be accompanied by opportunistic yeast and or bacterial infections that may require treatment. It is important to note that these infections are typically from organisms that naturally live on you pets skin rather than from contagious organisms. Cats get secondary infections far less frequently than dogs. Cats with allergies will often present with little scabs around the head and neck and along the back. One clue that can help distinguish food from seasonal allergies is whether or not the itchiness comes and goes throughout the year. When trying to determine what allergens are contributing to your pet’s itchiness we start by eliminating the allergens that we can control. We can eliminate fleas with quality flea control products and we can control what are pets eat. Many pets with allergies have allergies to a combination of sources. The Willamette valley provides ideal climate for fleas so if your pet is itchy you should treat for fleas monthly whether you see them or not. When testing whether or not food is a source of allergens it is important to feed a grain free product that has no beef, chicken, or soy. It is also crucial to not accidentally feed your pet treats with food allergens like milk bones; raw hide chews (beef) or dairy products. Always read the ingredients! It is recommended that you and your vet discuss the strategy behind a food elimination trial as well as various options for food trials such Itchy Skin continued on page 16

What Ever Happened to VHS? By Rick Rogers The last four decades have been very confusing, and sometimes costly, for those of us who collect classic movies. I actually started collecting short versions of movies in the 1950’s when these silent abridged versions were available on 8 millimeter film with written captions. Sure, they required an expensive projector and screen to watch them and they only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was the only way many of us could afford to see the movies in our home. Now, I wish I had those old 8mm films. Little did I know that the colorful descriptive boxes they came in would be worth more on eBay than the actual small films themselves. Imagine my joy as a collector in the 1970’s when VHS videotapes of complete classic movies became available. Since we already had color tvs in just about every home, all we needed was a videotape player and the tapes themselves. In the beginning, both were very expensive to buy but it didn’t take long for rental stores to come along where you could not only rent the players, you could also rent from store libraries that featured hundreds of classic movies. Then came the 90’s and DVDs. The new technology allowed manufactures to put hours of special features
on the little plastic disk, such as documentaries about the movies, the stars and the trailers. With the 21st century came Blu-Ray and High Definition and 3-D players and television sets.. And so it goes leaving us to wonder what is next for the classic movie lover. Many of us built huge libraries of VHS movies prior to the coming of DVDs. Some of us converted those titles to DVD leaving the VHS tapes to collect dust. But wait! If you still have a VHS player or two tucked away somewhere, don’t throw it away. Thrift store like Goodwill in Albany and Corvallis, and St. Vinnies in Albany, have a huge selection of hundreds, if not thousands of great movies on VHS from the beginning of the movie business through the early part of this decade. The good news is you can pick them up for just a dollar or two at most places. You just need to be careful. In the beginning VHS tapes were made from acetate tape, like old sound recording tape. The old acetate tape can become brittle with time and then breaks easily. In the later years the tape was made of Mylar which has a tendency to stretch when repeatedly played and pulled over the heads on the player. Father Brown Books By G.K. Chesterton Can a mystery story also be well written? For the first half-century of mysteries, the answer — according to literary critics — would have been a resounding “no!” One of the authors, who help lift mysteries from being hack pieces in magazines or dime novels, was also one of England’s most prominent 20th-century writers: G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936). Chesterton’s influence as a writer is most famous in the case of C.S. Lewis, but even modern authors like Neil Gaiman continue to cite him as having had a major impact on their writing. A mystery short story differs than novels because instead of a complex plot of piecing together clues, it requires the detective to think differently about the few facts which have been presented. Chesterton usually pulls this off without it being too much of a “trick,” but what are most memorable about his stories is his characters. Father Brown himself is quietly humorous but otherwise as plain as
can be, and normally stays somewhat in the background of the tales, allowing for the development of realistic characters that have become ensnared in some Scott very human crisis. Givens, It is the crisis and Browsers Book Stores the characters’ reaction to it, which Albany & keeps these tales Corvallis timeless. Given his calling, Father Brown is more interested in reforming than capturing the criminals. He cares more for morality than justice, and as often as not, the criminal will take his reformation--or punishment--into his own hands. Indeed, Father Brown’s occasional side-kick, the private detective Flambeau, is a former master thief who changed his ways after an encounter with Father Brown. The tales are currently in print in a variety of formats. Although my preference is to read older copies of older books (it just feels right), if you don’t want to tackle all of them, I would suggest the selection found in Father Brown: The Essential Tales (Modern Library, 2005, with an introduction by P.D. James.)

Gain Confidence and Boost Self Esteem in Five SimpleManners Steps ression
ks
We all want to become more confident and feel good about ourselves so we can live our very best life. Here are some ways to gain confidence and raise self-esteem: 1. Do something that requires a decision and a follow-through. Have you been putting off writing that letter to Aunt Martha? Is there a friend you’ve been meaning to call? Wash the car, tidy the garden or clean the house. You’ll gain confidence by setting goals (even small ones) and following through on them. 2. Enjoy something just for you. Do you have any hobbies or sports that you enjoy playing? Some things like going swimming, painting or writing can hold your attention and get you into a state of ‘flow’. While you are in the flow you forget about everything else. Afterwards, you’ll feel competent and capable. It’s a great way to boost your self-esteem. If you don’t have any particular hobbies or pastimes that you enjoy make an effort to try something you’ve always wanted to try. Picture yourself doing it, and then give it a try! It doesn’t have to be something

You’ll find that when you are in a situation where you are meeting new people, you immediately become less nervous when you focus on the person you are meeting. At the end of the day, you’ve interacted with others and will notice that you feel much lighter. 4. Relax, already! Learning to become more relaxed is a great life enhancer. People who are more relaxed have fewer problems with their memories and are more likely to take the bumps in the road of life in stride. A trip to Boulevard can do wonders

for relaxing. Our focus is entirely on helping you unwind. It is a special time “All About You” and sometimes that is just what we need! The practice of meditation has gained popularity for this reason. You might want to look into Tai Chi, which involves physical relaxation techniques. Whatever method you decide on, take relaxation seriously. The benefits are just too great to ignore. If you’ve never considered relaxation important, think of it this way: if you can attend to something that results in feeling good, how can you not gain confidence in your personal abilities? 5. Make a list of everything you’ve ever accomplished. Think small. An accomplishment is an accomplishment! Some things you could put on your list: passed my driver’s test and got my license, scored a goal when I played hockey, managed to save enough money to go on a trip and so on. These are just a few ideas you can use to gain confidence and boost your self-esteem. Use these ideas as a base point and add these things permanently in your life. Keep in mind, people are not born with good self-esteem, most of us have to work at it. It develops from your thinking and the things you do daily to make yourself feel good.

as prescription diets versus home cooked diets versus quality store brands. The important thing to remember is that we start with flea control and specific diet changes. (Not just changing from Alpo to Beneful). If flea control and food trials do not control your pet’s itchiness then we are most likely dealing with seasonal allergies. The treatment for seasonal allergies is more involved as it often requires treatment for life and includes medically suppressing your pet’s itchiness and a process of desensitization with a series of serum allergy injections given over months to years. This process should be conducted under the guidance of a board certified veterinary dermatologist. So start with flea control and food first!

Bedbugs measure just 5 mm long and are almost completely flat when unfed and they can hide in almost any location without detection. Bed bug colonies have been found in seams, joints, and crevices; the slot of a screw; or even the spine of a book. Their size and low profile make them very difficult to detect without effort, and facilitate their ability to travel by stowing away in personal belongings such as the hem of a garment, the seam of a briefcase, the crease in a shoe, secondhand furniture, or the vent of a laptop. Someone simply sitting in a location that has bed bugs can provide the bed bugs an excellent opportunity to hitch a ride. Females can lay 5 eggs each day and will generally lay 200 to 500 in less than 10 months. A single female and her offspring could create a colony of thousands within six months. Adult bed bugs feed every 5 to 10 days, and will remain hidden and inactive at all other times, making them a challenge to detect and treat. Bed bugs can live up to 18 months without feeding. them difficult to destroy by passive methods, such as starvation and isolation. Eliminating bed bugs requires a direct intervention. Normally, bed bug infestations start in the mattress or bed frame, but infestations can start in any part of a home. In fact, they are able to travel 20 to 100 feet for a blood meal and can wander to new parts of a home with little difficulty. Bed bugs can be found everywhere in the home including baseboards, drawers, tables, floor boards, cracks in the wall, electrical sockets, and inside belongings and appliances. The costs of managing an infestation become higher if the problem is left alone, or is treated improperly. The longer there is inaction, the more the infestation will spread and more rooms need treatment. This can lead to multiple treatments before all harborages are eradicated. Here are a just a few tips to safeguard your self from these pests: Check your bed with a flashlight, looking along mattress seams, ruffles, the headboard, the frame, walls, baseboards, etc., for the telltale dots and rustyreddish stains. When traveling seal up you’re suitcases in a giant zip lock bag, reaching in to grab what you need then closing the bag. When back at home remove and launder clothes immediately. A Weight Loss Challenge A few years ago I found myself in a very helpless place when it came to my health. Specifically with being overweight and feeling like I had tried everything to lose weight and get my life back. I had tried numerous things and was discouraged by a combination of the cost of various programs, the complexity, whether or not they worked long term and whether or not I could even stick with them long enough to see results. I even talked to my doctor about surgical options, feeling like there was no other hope for me to find success and actually lose the weight I struggled with for longer than I cared to remember. In March of last year a friend told me she was going to do a 90 day challenge offered by Visalus Sciences and asked me if I would like to join her. I checked out the video and was excited about what I saw. After tasting the product and seeing the results, and hearing about the money back guarantee, my husband and I were cautiously optimistic. It seemed to be too good to be true. After we talked
it through, we decided to jump in and give it a shot. After all, what did we have to lose? We set what we felt were challenging goals and found the program to yield results very quickly. The program was easy to stick to because the shakes taste amazing, it is simple and we felt better almost immediately. In the first 90 days my husband and I lost a combined total of 103 pounds. At the same time, we got our lives back. We were living again, rather than just watching others live. We could play with our three kids, rather than just watch them play. We became passionate about what we were doing and began sharing it with others that we cared about. We have found great joy in helping others improve nutrition, lose weight, stop skipping meals, or whatever their goals may be. The icing on the cake has been to earn a free BMW, earn income and to help others do the same. I am forever grateful that this life changing challenge was shared with me… and that is why I share it with others.

Grasscycling: Healthy Soils, Healthy Streams
Grasscycling is the environmentally friendly practice of replacing fertilizer with your grass clippings. Clippings are mostly made up of water, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus- essential nutrients to plant growth and the primary ingredients in fertilizer. When you grasscycle, these valuable nutrients are returned to the soil and help build a healthier lawn that requires less fertilizer. Studies show you can reduce your fertilizer rates by up to 50% without decreasing the quality of your grass. In fact, grasscycling can actually improve the quality of your lawn by contributing to fewer weeds, higher density, and greener grass.
When you grasscycle you can “Go Green” without turning your lawn brown.
Lawn products can end up in your stream Fertilizers, grass clippings, and yard debris are made up of nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus). During a rain event, these nutrients can be washed into streams and rivers. The pulse of nutrients creates blooms of algae and aquatic plants. When these plants die, they sink and begin to decompose. Decomposers, such as bacteria and microbes, use up oxygen and lower oxygen levels in the water. Lower dissolved oxygen levels can be harmful to fish populations and the food web.
NO MUSS, NO FUSS Concerned about clippings and clumps cluttering your lawn? Here are few tips you can try: • Use a broom or leaf blower to spread clumps • Mow when the grass is dry • Keep your mower blades sharp to get a clean cut • Try using a mulch mower to reduce the mess • Reduce fertilizer rates throughout the year
