12 Days of Christmas

Horse-drawn wagon tours of Albany’s Historic Districts a Christmas tradition.

Holidays Ahead! by Rick Rogers With the aroma of a delicious Thanksgiving dinner lingering overhead it can only mean one thing, we are now in full holiday mode. Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years are here and it is time to celebrate, be with family, share the feelings of the season and remember what this time of year is all about. There is much to see and do in the mid-valley this season. December gets its start with numerous community events around the area. That includes Christmas parades and tree lighting ceremonies on December 5th and 6th scheduled in Albany, Lebanon, Corvallis, Brownsville and Sweet Home. One California native once told me that living in the mid-valley during the Christmas season was like living in a scene from “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Another annual event that draws thousands of visitor is the “Christmas Storybook Land” at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany. This marks the 39th year for this all-volunteer effort. Walking through the exhibit is a true fulfillment of every child’s Christmas dreams. It is made to resemble a walk through a indoor forest with

storybook scenes around every bend and a visit with Santa at the end. This year Christmas Storybook land will run December 4th through 18th. For times and other information you can go online to: www. christmasstorybookland.org. Another unique event in the annual Christmas Parlor Tour of some of Albany’s most historic Victorian homes. Visitors will have a chance to see the interior of the selected homes decked out in their full holiday splendor much as they would have been at the beginning of the last century. This year’s Christmas Parlor Tour will take place on December 13th with tickets and other information available at the Albany Visitors Association. For more information log on to: www.albanyvisitors.com. You also won’t want to miss the annual Christmas concert at the LaSells Stewart Center on the O.S.U. Campus in Corvallis on December 3rd, the horsedrawn nighttime wagon tours of Albany’s historic districts lighted for the season on December 20th and the annual Christmas Eve caroling at the historic Whitespires Church on Christmas Eve. From all of us at High Points may you and yours have a wonderful Christmas celebrating the birth of Christ and the time of year that is like no other!

by Karen Rogers Last year, one big box store had its first Christmas items out in August. I heard my first Christmas carol on November 2. This year it’s even worse, Christmas started in early November! Any more, it’s Happy Halloween and Merry Christmas Then it all comes to fruition on the 24th and 25th and BAM…It’s all over. For all those of us who have been immersed in Yuletide, it’s like quitting cold turkey. Or getting doused with an ice water wake up! Our personal decorating starts rather early, I must admit, since I am a Crazy Cat Lady, we don’t set up a tree, instead we hang our ornaments from the ceiling, interspersed with hand cut snowflakes. It takes a while to hang around a thousand of them in the living room and dining area. We usually start shortly after Veterans Day. I am hereby calling for resurrecting the Twelve Days Tradition. I LIKE to have friends and family over afterwards- it’s more relaxed and with an added bonus, you can show off your new loot! The Twelve Days sees us through New Year’s and wraps up neatly on the fifth of January. I must admit that one of the highlights of our family tradition was my beloved Uncle Bud’s rendition of the old carol. It usually occurred after a few visits to the punch bowl and was greatly anticipated and appreciated by all. The Twelve Days gives us time to round up all the people you really meant to have over... well, over. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just tea and cookies. Or a bowl of fresh fruit for those who have over indulged and have nagging guilt complexes. So, this year, I’ll play my Christmas carols and enjoy a few more days of my decorations and neatly pass on all of my left-over candies, cookies and calories to my friends. Enjoy!

Karen’s Salted Carmelitas are a great treat for Christmas or any time of year. melted start adding ¾ C evaporated milk, 2 tbsps. at a time, SLOWLY, stirring well between. Cook to 234 degrees. Carefully pour the caramel over the chocolate chips. Crumble the rest of the cookie mix over the caramel, sprinkle with ½ tsp sea salt and, if desired 1 C chopped toasted pecans, and bake another 16 to 20 minutes. Cool completely on a rack before cutting. Hurry this up by placing in the refrigerator. These keep very well, but they taste so good that will never be a problem! Santa might be VERY generous if left with a cup of milk and a plate of these! Have a very Merry Christmas and Rick and I wish you the Happiest of New Years!!!

eat, drink and be merry

This is a cookie new to me, but, oh Boy! I’m passing it on as fast as possible! My daughter, Catherine, tasted these in Portland, got a recipe and sent it forth. I made two changes- the original called for melting 30 caramels with ½ C heavy cream in a microwave and it only made a nine inch square pan. I decided to make my own soft caramel and, since you’re only old once, go ahead and make this double batch in a 10 X 16 inch pan. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 10 X 16 inch pan well and line it with parchment paper. For the crust, combine 2 C flour, 2 C oatmeal, 1 ½ C brown sugar, 2 tsp baking soda and ½ tsp salt. Melt 2 ½ sticks of butter (1 ¼ C) and add 2 tsp vanilla. Pour over the dry mix and stir well. Crumble half of the mix into the prepared pan and press down firmly. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove and sprinkle 2 C chocolate chips (any kind) over. As they melt, I like to spread them evenly with a spatula. While this is baking, start your caramels. In a large saucepan combine ¾ C white sugar, 2tbsp water and 1 C white corn syrup. Bring to a boil, tilt the pan to wash down any sugar crystals and boil up again. Add ¼ C butter and when this has

Christmas Trees

Many of us shop for a Christmas Tree near the end of November or early in December. Wilco has a great selection of fresh cut green, flocked trees and live trees for the holiday season. The most important thing is to select a fresh tree. Check its needles. On a moist tree, the needles will bend in your fingers; on a dry tree, the needles will snap. Dried out trees lose their needles easily. If you gently grasp a branch and pull on a dry tree, you’ll end up with a handful of needles. Cut 1-2 inches off the trunk base when you get the tree home. Store it outside in water until you’re ready to decorate. Check the tree stand twice daily to ensure water levels remain constant. After the holidays, clip branches from the tree and lay them over planting beds for winter mulch. The boughs provide ideal protection for garden plantings. A tip for decorating: If you remove lower branches from your tree, use them to decorate other areas of your home, inside or out. Indoors, protect wood finishes by placing boughs on a piece of fabric or parchment.

How To Pick the Best Tree for Your Family Know what you want. Each tree species is a little different. You’ll want to match it to the needs house and family. If you have children, you might lean toward pines or firs with soft needles instead of spruce trees, which have sharp needles that can hurt when

Business

you step on them. Make sure the needles are secure. To find the best Christmas tree that will last the longest, gently grab the inside of a branch and pull your Word hand toward you. From The needles should WILCO stay on the tree. Alternatively, gently tap the cut end of a Brian tree on the ground; if Coons, a few needles fall off, Wilco it should be fine. If lots of needles fall off, keep searching for a different tree. Look for a tree with even coloration. Some types of Christmas trees will go from deep, rich green to a dull graygreen if they get too dried out. Measure, measure, measure. There’s nothing worse than picking out the best Christmas tree on the lot, getting it home, and finding out it’s too tall for your room. Before you leave home, measure both your ceiling height and the height of your Christmas tree stand so you don’t have to recut the tree when you get home. Keep your tree cool. As tempting as it may be to place the tree next to a fireplace, know that heat sources, including a heating vent blowing warm air, will cause your tree to dry out faster. Tree Preserver. To help maintain your tree and keep it from drying out season long, pick up some Christmas Tree Preserver from Wilco. It has a proven, unique, waterretaining formula that keeps water channels open, keeps needles on and keeps the tree fresh. Also- it won’t stain your carpet!

What Does THAT Mean?

DecipheringKids Your Dental Diagnosis Going Understanding dental terminology can be as difficult as learning a new language. These treatment options are commonly used and will prepare you for discussions with your dentist. • Crown: A crown is placed on top of a tooth and, once in place, covers the entire visible portion. Crowns are regularly made for teeth that are misshapen, broken, or weak in order to strengthen or protect them from further damage. Every crown is made to match the color of existing teeth. • Build-Up: A build-up supports the remainder of a tooth after decay or a root canal has left it unstable. If there isn’t enough viable tooth structure to support a crown, you will need a build-up. Depending on the support needed either pin retention or post and core will be used. Pin retention, similar to a staple, provides the framework to replace the tooth structure. Post and

core build-up looks like a nail with the post deep in the tooth structure which fully supports any restoration. • Root Canal: A root canal, contrary to popular belief, does not cause pain. It is, in fact, a procedure that ends pain by killing the nerve. The blood supply to the tooth is stopped which kills the nerve. When this happens, the tooth structure becomes chalklike over time which is why root canals and crowns are always partnered. • Composite Restoration: Composite is a form of plastic resin. It begins as a paste and can be formed to any shape. It is perfect for recontouring teeth that have lost volume due to decay. A special light-cures the material and it becomes extremely hard just like your own enamel. Composite material comes in a variety of colors to accurately match your own tooth color.

‘Tis the Season December calendars are filled with social gatherings; we love to eat, drink and be merry! Frequently, people who are generally nondrinkers, find themselves swept up in the holiday spirit(s). Avoid embarrassment and or injury by taking a few minutes to think about your party strategy! Many drugs do not mix well with alcohol. Ask your pharmacist what the consequences of having an alcoholic beverage might be, before a generous host puts one in your hand! The average adult liver can clear about one alcoholic beverage (12oz of 5% beer, 5oz of wine, or 1.5oz of hard liquor) per hour. This is a rough estimate; your personal rate may be faster or slower. One thing is certain: the only way to avoid intoxication is to pace your alcohol consumption. With that in mind, let’s debunk a few drinking myths: Myth: Caffeine can help you sober up. Fact: Caffeine masks the sedative effect of alcohol, but it cannot improve your physical reaction- time or decisionmaking ability. In essence you become a wide awake drunk, which may fool you into thinking it is okay to have another drink. Bad idea! Only time can restore sobriety. Myth: Drinking light colored beer causes

less intoxication than drinking dark colored beer. Fact: Beer gets its color from the grain it was made from. The color of the beer Pamela has no bearing on the Becker, RpH alcohol content. Some Rice’s pale microbrews have Pharmacy an alcohol content that rivals wine, & Gifts however wine is A “Pill Box not served in pints! Pharmacy” Always ask your server, or check the bottle for the listed alcohol content. Myth: Eating a large meal before drinking will prevent intoxication. Fact: While having food in the stomach does slow down the absorption of alcohol, it does not alter the amount of alcohol absorbed by the body. Since the signs of intoxication are delayed, one may think it is okay to keep drinking and seriously over-indulge…or worse, get behind the wheel of a car. Myth: You are less likely to get intoxicated drinking beer or wine than hard alcohol. Fact: It’s all about the numbers. If you are drinking more than the equivalent of one beverage (see list above) per hour no matter the form of alcohol; you will become intoxicated. Hopefully these tips will help you have a healthy, happy, holiday season. Best wishes from the staff at Rice’s Pharmacy!

Health Without Chiropractic?

Earth

The word chiropractic means to ‘heal with hands’. No drugs, no surgery, just one human putting their hands on another human to move a vertebrae to restore health by reducing interference in the nervous system so the brain and body can communicate. Chiropractors use a fancy word called a subluxation which is the name for these interferences that don’t allow our bodies to function as well as it possibly can. So how do these subluxations set in or get started in our bodies? It is one word that can hit you from a few different angles and that word is ‘STRESS’! These stresses can be in the form of a physical, chemical or emotional stress. Hmm, let’s see, does anyone not have emotional stress from time to time? Worries about finances, kids, a fight with a family member or co-worker, this list can go on forever. Chemical

stresses are impossible to get rid of with all of the processed foods we eat, pollutions in the air we breathe or water we drink. Physical stresses are pretty tough to stay away from too with Kevin repetitive movements Ross, DC at work, sitting at a advanced desk with bad posture, Chiropractic athletics or a toddler falling down hundreds Clinic of times when they are 541-928-1010 learning to walk. Unfortunately subluxations will occur from time to time. Chiropractors correct these subluxations by giving an adjustment with their hands, taking pressure off the nerve so the brain can communicate with the body part that the nerve innervates so it can function at 100%. If a body part is not functioning at 100% because of a subluxation that means that your health is compromised. Have your body function better by seeing a chiropractor; your nervous system health depends on it!

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” What do we learn from Mary’s Hymn of Praise? I literally could write a book on Mary’s prayer. I believe there are lessons for us in her humble adoration for her God: The first is her praise toward God for His plan and purpose in her life. God chose to use a virgin, betrothed to be married

to usher in the Messiah, the Savior of the world. I’m reminded of the lyrics of the song, “Mary Did You Know”: “Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation? Mary did you know that your Keven Ferguson, baby boy would one day rule the nation?” Willamette Mary was to give birth Valley to the King of Kings Christian and Lord of Lords. Her response was to Supply praise God even when she didn’t know how it was all going to unfold. My response is to praise God when I don’t understand my future. God is worthy of our praise in the bad times as well as the good times. The Second is her recognition that she is God’s servant. She makes this proclamation after her encounter with Gabriel, “And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant[a] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.” (Luke 1:38) Mary was willing to serve God even though the request was perhaps overwhelming to even consider. Mary stepped out in faith and obedience while trusting God’s redemptive plan for mankind. Like Abraham, Mary’s name would become great, but this was not because of her abilities or human efforts. Mary became known for generations because she was the person God chose. Mary’s Prayer continued on page 10

Stuff If The Walls Could Talk Leave a Message

Travel

Have you ever wanted to hurt the automated recording that instructs you on how to leave a message? After all these years, I think that we have figured out that after we hear the beep we are supposed to leave some sort of message. Remember those days of getting a message on an answering machine that lasted an eternity? We had to listen to detailed instructions about how to leave a message for every family member including the dog, followed by the family’s children singing some awful rendition of “Frosty the Snowman”! We have not made it very far from those days. In fact, we now deal with automated messages designed to inflict pain. In my business I make a lot of calls every day, the same as many of you. When my calling attempt lands me with that demented recording I begin to feel a tension building at the very core of my being. It starts with an inward

My head sinks lower toward the desk as the sadistic, over cheerful, waste of words drones on and on....Finally the finale arrives with the deranged voice saying, “At the end of your recording you may hang up or press one for more options. And I mutter, “I have a few options for you!” Editor’s note: Worse yet, while you are on hold an automated voice chimes in every 15 seconds to remind you: How Important Your Call Is!

Winter presents its own unique set of challenges. It is not the ideal time to put your home on the market if you live where it gets cold and rains or snows. However, there are steps you can take to brighten your home and make the showing pleasant and enjoyable. Clear a Path. Footprints on freshly fallen snow will turn to ice if the temperature is low enough. Sprinkle a layer of sand over the sidewalk and steps to ensure stable footing. Remember to open a path from the street to the sidewalk. If it’s raining, put a rubber mat by the front door or a container to hold wet umbrellas / shoes. Let in the Light. Pull up the blinds, open the shutters, push back the drapes on every window. Turn on every light in the house. Brighten dark rooms by placing spotlights on the floor behind furniture. Dental Disease By Dr. Eric Glaze, Albany Animal Hospital

Approximately eighty five percent or our patients have some degree of periodontal disease by the age of three. The process starts with the formation of plaque, which is a film of bacteria and saliva that forms on the enamel of teeth. If the film sets for long enough on the tooth it begins to react with minerals naturally found in our saliva and form rock hard tartar. As tartar forms oxygen levels drop near the surface of the tooth and this favors the growth of anaerobic bacteria that are more harmful. The bacteria and tartar begin to move under the gum line causing gingivitis. This becomes evident as swelling and reddening along the gum line with bleeding often observed with just minor mechanical irritation. Seeing blood more frequently on chew toys can be a clue to the onset of periodontal disease in dogs. Once bacteria moves under gums they start to break down the ligaments and alveolar bone that hold the teeth in their sockets. Seventy percent of a tooth lives under the gum line. As this degradation takes place toxins and bacteria can leach into the blood and cause inflammation in the kidneys as well as damage to the valves of the heart. Feeding dry kibble helps reduce the rate of plaque formation but is in no way a substitute for brushing. Imagine if we gave up brushing our own teeth in favor or only eating crunchy food. Brushing is the ideal way to get rid of plaque before it has a chance to mineralize into tartar and eventually move under the gums. This takes

time and training. Ideally twice a day is best but I can definitely tell the difference between a dog that has its teeth brushed every other day and a dog that doesn’t get its teeth brushed at all. It’s easier to start training a young dog to accept a toothbrush. Use a brush with extra soft bristles. The first step is just getting them used to having their mouths manipulated. Gently using your finger or a piece of gauze to wipe the teeth in the same manner you will be using the toothbrush. After a couple of weeks of doing this daily to twice daily you should introduce the toothbrush. After your dog accepts the toothbrush you can introduce pet friendly toothpaste. Pet toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors and some have enzymes that help kill bacteria. Do not use toothpaste intended for people because the fluoride will make them ill. When brushing try to focus on the outside of the upper teeth. Use elliptical motions angled at forty five degrees toward the gums. Try to get in 10 to 15 tight elliptical motions in before moving to the next area. Do not worry about brushing the insides of the teeth. Just focus on the outsides. If your pet refuses to accept a brush due to sensitive gums there are dental wipes that can be used to help remove plaque. If your dog already has moderate to severe periodontal disease then a full cleaning by a veterinarian will be necessary to give you a clean surface to start with. Never attempt to clean a dogs teeth during the first week after a veterinary cleaning as gums are often too tender during this time.

Reviews Star Wars: Aftermath

By Chuck Wendig With the destruction of the second Death Star and the deaths of both Darth Vader and the Emperor, the Empire is finished. Princess Leia and her brother Luke Skywalker will lead the Alliance to a glorious future and everyone will live happily ever after. At least, that’s the simplistic future that we hope for at the end of Return of the Jedi. We know, of course, that if Star Wars were real life, things would not be so simple. This is precisely the premise that Star Wars: Aftermath takes: yes, the Empire has been dealt some serious blows, but there is still an entire governmental population— with its attendant military forces—in existence. Set a matter of weeks after the end of Return of the Jedi, this book begins the exploration of an Empire in decline. Buoyed by the massive victory over Darth Vader, Alliance forces are making strides across the galaxy against Empire outposts. Meanwhile, several key members of the Empire are planning a secret meeting on the planet Akiva to determine the direction the Empire should take, and possibly, to choose a new leader. Wedge Antilles, an Alliance pilot who had a minor role in all three of the original Star Wars movies (you’d recognize him if you saw him), stumbles across this meeting by accident on a routine scouting

mission. Now, a motley crew of characters— an assassin, a retired Empire interrogator who has second thoughts about the Empire, a brilliant boy and his Alliance mother (well, and his killer robot)—need to work together to stop the meeting. The plot is pretty straight-forward without any real surprises. What’s interesting about the book, however, are the occasional glimpses of the difficulties of forming a new government out of the ashes of the old. Will the various citizens of the galaxy be loyal to a new democratic government? Will such government be strong enough not only to hold the galaxy together but also to fight the ingrown corruption that was common currency throughout the old Empire? Can the new government hold fast to its principles, or will necessity force it to become as ruthless as the old? And, will a strong new leader of the old Empire inspire new followers and gain a new domain? The new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie takes place thirty years after this book. Although there will certainly be more books detailing events between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens, we can “skip to the end” by watching the new movie! Will the remnants of the Empire have survived intact enough to choose a new leader? Will there be any more cute robots? Who knows?

Phone Scams Continue to be Serious Part 4 – What You Need to Threat, Remain on IRS “Dirty Dozen” List Taste Know About Oregon’s New Game of Tax Scams for the 2015 Filing Season Paid Sick Leave Law This is the final installment of this 4 part series on Oregon’s sick leave law that goes into effect next month on Jan. 1, 2016. This month I will touch on 2 more challenging aspects of the sick leave law that employers need to know to assure they remain in compliance. Carryover versus payout: The general rule is that you must carry over unused sick time from one leave year to the next. Some employers may prefer to clear the books at the end of a leave year and cash out unused sick leave. The new law allows this as an option only if you and the employee mutually consent to the cash-out, and you credit the employee with the amount of sick time available under the law at the beginning of the next leave year. For employers that are small enough to be permitted to provide unpaid sick leave, since there isn’t anything to cash out, they may (with the employee’s consent) wipe the slate clean and then front-load the employee’s balance with 40 hours. No exception for collective bargaining agreements: Outside the construction industry, employers with union-negotiated collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) need to be aware the new law doesn’t

replace anything in their CBAs. The CBA is a binding contract, so unless it expires before January 1, 2016, or the existing provisions for paid leave match up perfectly with the BY Cheryl Oregon law, employers Vaun, will find themselves in Complete the difficult position Business of asking unions to Solutions negotiate mid-term changes to the CBA. 541.981.9566 If the unions refuse, employers may be stuck with providing Oregon sick leave on top of the benefits already contained in the CBA. As an alternative to implementing a sick leave policy under the new law, employers may use their own sick leave policy, paid vacation policy or paid personal time off (PTO) policy as a substitute as long as it is “substantially equivalent to or more generous to the employee” than the Oregon sick leave law. The problem is that most existing policies will need to be adjusted in order to comply. This ends the series on the new leave law. Hopefully the leave law will bring employers a healthier workplace! WASHINGTON — Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain near the top of the annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams for the 2015 filing season, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent months as scam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revocation and other things. The IRS reminds taxpayers to guard against all sorts of con games that arise during any filing season. “If someone calls unexpectedly claiming to be from the IRS with aggressive threats if you don’t pay immediately, it’s a scam artist calling,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “The first IRS contact with taxpayers is usually through the mail. Taxpayers have rights, and this is not how we do business.” The Dirty Dozen is compiled annually by the IRS and lists a variety of common scams taxpayers may encounter any time during the year. Many of these con games peak during filing season as people prepare their
