Medical Problems How often do you do this? When you get back pain or a headache or something similar, you pop an ibuprofen and hope the problem will go away on its own. Sometimes you don’t want to think about the problem and what caused it. You just want the pain to go away and to get about your business. Well, the fact is that most back pain and neck pain problems have mechanical causes. What I mean by this is that they aren’t caused by something like malnutrition, chemical imbalance, or a disease process like cancer. Mechanical problems require mechanical solutions. Allow me to illustrate with a metaphor. Let’s say that the engine in your car has started to make a weird noise. Maybe it’s a grinding or whining sound. You know that there is something wrong. However, you’ve got places to be and things to do and so rather than popping the hood or taking it to a mechanic you take it to the carwash instead. They shine the car up really nice and make it look good. Now you feel way better about the aesthetics of your car; because it looks nice you aren’t as concerned about the problem with the engine. See the problem here? Maybe that noise will go away on its own but how likely is that? When we resort to chemical solutions (i.e. Meds) for mechanical problems it is
like polishing up your vehicle to deal with an engine problem. It’s just not very good maintenance. Ask any mechanic or car enthusiast and they will agree that the best way to keep your repair costs down is by keeping on your Dr. Jason maintenance schedule Young and handling problems early. These same principles apply to your health. When you have back pain or neck pain, you are likely having a mechanical problem. Early intervention or proper maintenance can help you avoid more serious problems such as arthritis, degeneration or more debilitating conditions. Chiropractic care is an excellent, safe, and cost efficient way to maintain your spinal health. Detecting and treating problems early can help save you from more expensive problems. I’m not just talking about the financial costs. I’m talking about your livelihood, ability to work, and do all the things you enjoy. Remember, a car wash never fixed an engine problem. Use mechanical interventions to correct mechanical problems. Jason Young, DC, MS is the chiropractic physician and owner of Body of Health Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Corvallis, OR. Have A Sun-sational Summer
Earth
Happy Independence Day! July is a great month in the Pacific Northwest; grass allergies are abating, berries are abundant, and the weather is warm. Sunny days call for the vigilant use of sun protection, particularly since items we use daily can increase the skin’s sun-sensitivity. It’s logical that medicinal and/or scented products applied directly to the skin will increase the risk of sunburn, rash, or blistering. However, many drugs we take internally may cause a similar reaction. One of the ways our body removes oral medications from circulation is to deposit them into the skin. Unfortunately, when sunlight strikes the affected skin surface, a chemical reaction takes place which can damage tissues. There are too many sun-sensitizing oral medications to list individually. Following are some of the drug classifications known to cause sun sensitivity: antibiotics, oral acne medications, diuretics (water pills) heart and blood pressure agents, cancer chemotherapy, diabetic, and psychotropic drugs, cholesterol –lowering agents, and over-the- counter pain relievers. This is not a complete list! To further complicate things; not every drug within the classifications mentioned, causes problems. Ask your pharmacist to review your current medication list; highlighting agents that are known to increase sun sensitivity.

It is not practical to simply stop using an offending drug during the summer months, since many of these medications are life sustaining! We need a strategy to Pamela mitigate the risk of skin Becker, RpH injury. Rice’s In the case of topically applied Pharmacy products, always & Gifts choose unscented A “Pill Box soaps, gels, and Pharmacy” lotions. Avoid spraying perfume directly on skin. Acne and wrinkle treatments can be applied in the evening and washed off before going outdoors. If the medicinal agent must be left on the skin 24hrs a day, cover the areas with clothing, hats or scarves and limit your sun exposure. Consult your physician before applying sun block over a topical drug, as this may alter its efficacy. To protect against damage caused by oral sun-sensitizing medications, wear protective clothing, limit exposure, and use a sun block. Sun blocks differ from sunscreens! A sun block reflects sunlight before it strikes the skin and has titanium or zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Sunscreens work by absorbing sunlight at the skin’s surface and have active ingredients that usually end in “-enzone”. Where sun-sensitizing drugs are concerned; we want to keep sun rays away from the skin surface. Use a sun block. The staff of Rice’s Pharmacy looks forward to helping you have a healthy summer, stop in soon!

Supplement Insurance – Do I need this? Finds (For individuals under 65)
Health insurance premiums are rising and more and more employers are increasing deductibles on their group health insurance plans. The premiums are becoming unaffordable and employers want to provide health insurance for their employees. What is the solution? Increase the deductibles on the group insurance. Do you have money in the bank to cover the high deductibles? We cannot ignore that accidents or illnesses happen when we least expect it. When an illness or accident happens, a higher deductible health insurance plan may create a financial hardship for you and your family. Just last month my cousin, in his 40’s, had a stroke. He is now going through rehabilitation and physical therapy. This is causing financial hardship for him and his family. There are different types of supplement insurance that will help with your health insurance deductible. Supplement insurance can be purchased through your employer group or individually and can provide cash for the insured if they were just diagnosed
with a critical illness. It can provide customizable protection for the insured to fit your budget. You can elect $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 or $60,000. Supplement Donna R. insurance is meant Green to compliment your Northwest existing health financial insurance – especially Services if you have a large deductible plan. The plan will pay cash directly to you in the lump sum that you elected and not pay your doctor or hospital. This helps you to focus on your recovery and not on your finances. There are plans that will pay you cash for an accident, ambulance, diagnostic exam, emergency treatment room, physical therapy and overnight stays in the hospital. Accidents can result in serious injuries that require hospitalization or extended treatment and recovery. When these events happen having medical insurance is just one part of being protected. Stuff If The Walls Could Talk This Might Floor You!

Wood flooring is making a huge comeback and is offered in many different kinds of woods, sizes, and features. Prefinished flooring typically is installed either by nailing, gluing, or snapping together for a floating floor application. Traditional wood flooring is installed unfinished, and then sanded and finished in place. This generally takes three days or so depending, of course, on the size of your floor area. There are many choices out there so I always suggest doing your research before committing or being committed to a particular style of floor. When I was a kid we had hardwood floors and they were maintained with a hand applied paste wax and then buffed with a cotton cloth or an electronic buffer. We would help mom by putting on old socks and then

There are a lot of questions you should ask yourself to help you decide whether you are ready for a home that is larger then your current home, or in a mre desirable location. If you answer “yes” to most of the questions, it’s a sign you may be ready to move. Have you built substantial equity in your current home? Look at your annual mortgage statement or call your lender to find out. If you have owned your home for five or more years, you may have significant, unrealized gains. Has your income or financial situation improved? If you are making more money, you may be able to afford higher mortgage payments and cover the cost of moving. Have you outgrown your neighborhood? For example, would you rather live closer to your job or live in a better school district? Are there reasons that you can’t remodel or add on to your current home? Emmenagogues
Buys
Emmenagogues are female correctives which provoke, stimulate, and promote the menstrual flow and discharge. Properly used, emmenagogues will balance the reproductive system so as to balance the flow. Dr. John R. Christopher relates a story of just one of many cases of how beneficial it is to strengthen the reproductive system while healing the entire body. He had a case where a young lady was very afraid of marriage. She would have menstrual periods every two weeks or so and be in bed 6-7 days each time. She was weak, anemic, and could hardly sit up in bed. Dr. Christopher used the herbs for the lower bowel to clean out her bowels, put her on a cleansing program a diet fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds and emmenagogue herbs, and within just six weeks she was feeling wonderful and looking beautiful. She gained weight, took on the glow of health, and was the happiest person in the world. Not long after this, she married and later entered motherhood normally with a healthy baby. These herbs have great power in bringing order and strength to the generative system for new life in both the mother (or father) and the prospective child. Squaw vine: It makes childbirth safe and wonderfully easy. In labor, it is reputed by some herbalists to be better than red raspberry leaves (although great together).

A big WELCOME to our newest Points for Profit business partner The Pix Theater, 321 Second Avenue S.W. in downtown Albany. Rod and Denise Bigner have owned and managed the Pix since last July. The Pix is more than just a downtown venue to see a great movie. The Bigners have transformed the concession stand area into a comfortable gathering spot to meet friends and enjoy a comfortable moviethemed ambiance. Rod and Denise say they are passionate about how movies can affect us. Like a song, movies can bring back memories, open us up to truths about ourselves, and even inspire us. With the Pix, the Bigners want to provide a sense of community and a place where people will want to spend some time. With the comfortable seating in the concession area, the Pix is a great place to enjoy conversation with friends, have
some great food and drink, and experience a terrific movie. They are open daily, often with multiple showings of all types of films from the latest animated family films to the more acclaimed adult dramas. Families are welcome to all showings before 6PM each day. Showings that start later than 6PM are limited to those over 21 since they offer a large selection of beer and wine at their evening shows. The theater is also available to book for special events such as meetings, weddings, anniversary parties, even baby and wedding showers. Now, as part of Points for Profit, you can save your ticket stubs, concession receipts and party invoices to benefit your favorite participating non-profit organization. Also watch for special Points for Profit events coming soon. For more information about the Pix Theater go online to: www.albanypix.com; or call: 541-926-7469. EXPERIENCE the difference at the Pix!

This month, we want to feature the Linn County Court Appointed Special Advocate program, an outstanding non-profit partner in Points for Profit. C.A.S.A is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday volunteer citizens as officers of the court. C.A.S.A. is a federally and state mandated organization that recruits, trains, and supports community citizens to advocate in the best interest of abused and neglected children who are under the protection of the Juvenile Dependency Court. According to the C.A.S.A website, in an overburdened social welfare system, many of these children may “slip through the cracks,” amounting to the hundreds of open dependency cases. C.A.S.A. volunteers investigate the child’s situation, report the findings, and make recommendations to the judge hearing the case. C.A.S.A. then works to facilitate the services needed to maintain the active and positive growth of the child. C.A.S.A. volunteers advocate for the
child’s best interests and needs. The volunteers monitor the progress of each case as it moves through the system until the child is in a safe, permanent home. In 2011, in the Linn County area, 607 children were victims of child abuse and neglect. That resulted in 381 being removed from their homes and placed in foster care. The cases wind up in court when the child’s only crime is that they were “victims.” C.A.S.A is always looking for volunteers who have the time and willingness to face what can become, in some cases, some pretty emotional circumstances. C.A.S.A volunteers must be able to pass a background police check and be willing to undergo an intense training program before being assigned their first case. We at Points for Profit salute the job being done by the C.A.S.A program in Linn County. If this sounds like something you might want to become involved with please contact the C.A.S.A office in Albany at: 54-928-2651, or check them out online at: www.linncasa.com. You can visit their office at 2730 Pacific Boulevard S.E., Suite 201.

HOW TO APPLY
PowerStrips™ are a patented fusion of modern energy and ancient herbs. Every part of the body needs energy. PowerStrips™, worn daily, delivers energy to those parts of the body that need it.
For best results: Apply a new PowerStrip™ every 1-2 days, thirty to sixty minutes after bathing and remove thirty to sixty minutes before bathing. While using PowerStrips™ you may experience a warming sensation, which is considered normal. As with any product you are putting on or in your body, pay attention to how you feel and adjust as needed. You may need assistance to place PowerStrips™ in hard-to-reach areas.
Power Strips
By increasing energy, one of the first benefits you'll notice is a relief of pain. For this reason, PowerStrips™ are listed as a Class 1, Medical Device by the FDA that can be used for pain relief and to improve the look and feel of skin.
Contact Susanna Arroyo 503-999-1036
Each topically applied PowerStrip has two layers. The outer layer contains elemental Germanium. The inner or adhesive layer contains a proprietary blend of: Fermented Korean Red Ginseng, Silver & (Alpha-c CMPTM) Marine Phytoplankton.
Place above or below a joint for best results. Do not use on rashes; on wounds or damaged skin. Keep patch sealed in shipping bag. Only use one patch at a time. Avoid storing product in direct sunlight. Protect product from excessive moisture.
For external use only. Avoid the knee or elbow, skin folds, scar tissue, burned or irritated areas. Those with Dermatitis or other skin conditions should consult with their physician before using.
Store at 68-77 degrees F (20-25 C). After you remove your PowerStrip™ your skin may feel warm and appear red. This is normal. The redness will disappear in a short time. In some rare cases some may experience discomfort. If so, promptly remove the PowerStrip™.

Ultrasonic Treatment
Ultrasound technology has been used in medicine for therapeutic purposes such as the treatment of soft tissue injuries. It is here that it made its leap into the world of esthetics. Ultrasound has the ability to raise local tissue temperature, speed up circulation, improve cell function, soften body tissues, increase penetration and promote metabolism. For these reasons it was easy for ultrasound to make its move into skin care. Some of the most common uses for ultrasound in esthetics are for skin cleansing, wound healing and cellulite reduction. Research is showing that ultrasound supports the production of collagen, especially by stimulating the fibroblast and collagen fibers directly with ultrasonic vibrations. The warming and heating function of the ultrasonic unit is one of the most important therapeutic factors of ultrasonic. It can change the function of the blood vessels, change the process of metabolism, speed up circulation, reduce nerve excitement, and increase blood flow, enhancing cellular activity, as oxygen and nutrients are delivered throughout the tissues to later boost collagen production. Together this means enhanced tissue repair. The internal heat is carried away by the blood circulation and is not perceived during your treatment. The warning action can
change blood circulation and helps to reduce inflammation. When using ultrasound for cleansing micro bursting, of “dead” cells occurs as a result of the vibrations. The ultrasonic waves Lindie M. work to emulsify and Truex, break up debris in River’s Edge the skin’s pores. For Day Spa cleansing, the frequency 541-791-2800 used is 28,000 vibrations per second. This will pull debris up and out of the pores to unclog them. This process is totally non-invasive and can be used on the most sensitive skin. The result is remarkable, an instant clearing and smoothing effect can be observed. With the same machine we can also spot induce (deep wrinkles & lines) product into the skin by either the pulse method or the continuous cycle. Although results can be seen in just the first treatment, it is recommended to undergo a treatment series of 6-12 treatments to ensure the most benefits and lasting results. A biochemical function of ultrasonic comes from anabolism and catabolism reactions. This is the process of cell metabolism. Small doses of ultrasound can promote the synthesis of protein inside the cells, help to regenerate wound tissues and promote the synthesis of fiber cells in the body. In this process the induced product is being absorbed and utilized by t he cells. The accelerated metabolism of the cells changes the ph level of the skin to a more Ultrasonic continued on page 12

Many of our patients don’t have traditional dental insurance, and they struggle to pay for preventive care twice a year for both themselves and their children. Restorative costs, for those who don’t invest in prevention, can be overwhelming as well. We’ve found a solution for those patients, and for those that have found their employer-sponsored plans unable to fully cover the cost of routine care. It’s Compass®, a new program that offers twice-yearly cleanings and discounts off restorative dentistry, for an incredibly fair price. This dental membership plan has five tiers of service to meet the needs of people at different stages of life, and has no waiting period. If you are underemployed or recently unemployed, a dental membership plan can bridge the gap and make oral care possible, without the prohibitive added costs of COBRA insurance. Since many of the health insurance policies available online through today’s exchanges don’t offer a dental option, we’ve been approached by

patients both recently retired, and college students ineligible to stay on parental plans. Both these groups are underserved with traditional options that are both affordable and comprehensive. Easy access to care is one of the most important aspects of your plan! Compass® has convenient monthly payments, and several local dental offices that honor its discounts. If you’ve done research and your new employer-sponsored plan has “uncovered services”, meaning it declines to pay toward certain procedures that are not cosmetic (surgery and major restorative work are common uncovered services, much to the surprise of patients); your family may find membership more costeffective than the traditional insurance plan offered to you at present. ‘Back to School’ is a time for new beginnings. Why not give your family the extra support that dental membership can provide? Call our office for more details, or visit www. compassdentist.com

Your July Lawn Watering – Some people think that under-watering is the main cause of killing your lawn. However, most people end up overwatering their lawns and killing it. Overwatering makes your lawn more susceptible to fungi and disease. Watering should be delivered 1-2 times a week for a total of 1″ of water per week. Watering should be done in the morning hours. (Middle of the night watering can encourage funguses and disease.) Resist the urge to water more than 2 times a week unless it is extremely and consistently hot. It is important to allow your lawn to dry between watering. This will make those grass roots grow deeper to access more nutrients and create a more established lawn. Over fertilizing – If your grass is healthy and the soil is good, you shouldn’t need much fertilization. An early spring and late fall application for cool season grasses, and throughout the growing season for warm season grasses. Aim for slow release fertilizers and avoid ones that are a high percentage of nitrogen, which will lead to a faster growing (and more mowing) lawn. Cutting too short – Grass experts recommend that you resist the urge

to cut your grass more than 1/3 of its height. If you adhere to this rule, you can leave grass clippings on your lawn. These are helpful and put nutrients back into the soil Word as they decompose. From Cutting more than WILCO 1/3 of the height can leave big Brian clumps of grass clippings that Coons, could kill the grass Wilco below it. Make sure you have a sharp mower blade. Dull blades can lead to ragged cuts and make the grass more susceptible to disease and drought. Thicken Your Lawn – Where grass is thick and healthy, weed seeds have no place to germinate, and the grass can put down a wider and deeper root system, which can pull nutrients and water from the soil more efficiently. Look for a seed mix specifically labeled for your conditions: sun or partial shade. Fall is the best time to overseed, but if your lawn is thin, don’t be afraid to do it in spring/ early summer. Before you start, cut your grass to about 2 inches high to allow sunlight to germinate the new seed. Spread about 3 to 4 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet. Note: You can successfully overseed during the summer, however it’s tricky as the seed must remain moist and the risk is high that heat will dry out and kill the seed and tender young shoots.

Pollinators make the world more beautiful with blooming plants and flowers and they work hard to pollinate crops that provide food for our country. Insects and animals are classified as pollinators if they contribute to plant reproduction by distributing pollen between the male and female parts of various flowering plants like trees, wildflowers, and food crops. When asked what pollinates our plants the most, people think of just the honeybee. The honeybee is not alone in the classification of pollinators; the bumblebee, carpenter bee, and blue orchard mason bees rank very high if not higher in the ranks of great pollinators. Some other pollinators you may not consider are wasps. While most wasps don’t have the body hairs necessary to carry pollen from flower to flower, many of them visit flowers to feed on the nectar and help to distribute pollen. Butterflies are another pollinator. Butterflies are active during the day while moths are active at night and feed primarily on nectar from flowers as adults. Although they cannot carry as much pollen as bees, they are important pollinators for some flowering plants and some travel great distances. Flies and beetles are another pollinator you may not have known as an insect

With increased urbanization, natural habitats for foraging pollinators have become scarce, and in turn so have their nutrition sources. You can help! Earth Mid Year Payroll Checkup It’s June and businesses are busy preparing to close second quarter of 2014. This is an excellent time for a mid-year payroll checkup. A comprehensive review now will save you a lot of time and trouble when you come to the end of the year. Following are four things you should look for in your review. All of these issues could cost your business money through large tax bills or penalties. • Employees Classified as Independent Contractors. The IRS has strict guidelines on qualifications for the two types of workers. Taxes, benefits eligibility, and whether the worker is issued a W-2 or 1099 all hinge on this. Large businesses and mom-andpop shops all around the country are receiving fines for not getting this right and those fines aren’t cheap. • Missed Payroll Tax Deadlines or Failure to File Payroll Reports. It’s easy to get confused by the different taxes and when each one is due and when and what reports you are supposed to file. These mistakes can cost you serious

If your 541.981.9566 employees are set up incorrectly, or perhaps the payroll tax updates weren’t done, then your payroll software won’t be correct. • Garnishments Including Child Support. Garnishments have strict guidelines. Failure to adhere to garnishment rules or failing to make garnishment payments on time can result in steep fines. You must follow state law regarding charging garnishment processing fees if you charge these fees to your employees.
You may be an injured spouse if you file a joint tax return and all or part of your portion of a refund was, or is expected to be, applied to your spouse’s legally enforceable past due financial obligations.

Here are seven facts about claiming injured spouse relief: 1. To be considered an injured spouse you must have paid federal income tax or claimed a refundable tax credit, such as the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit on the joint return, and not be legally obligated to pay the past-due debt. 2. Special rules apply in community property states. For more information about the factors used to determine whether you are subject to community property laws, see IRS Publication 555, Community Property. 3. If you filed a joint return and you’re not responsible for the debt, but you are entitled to a portion of the refund, you may request your portion of the refund by filing Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation. 4. You, the “injured” spouse, must sign the form. 7. Do not use Form 8379 if you are claiming innocent spouse relief. Instead, file Form 8857, Request for Innocent Spouse Relief. This relief from a joint liability applies only in certain limited circumstances. However, in 2011 the IRS eliminated the two-year time limit that applies to certain relief requests. IRS Publication 971, Innocent Spouse Relief, explains who may qualify, and how to request this relief.

Discover The Wonders Of SEALY MattressHome Systems
How long have you owned the mattress you presently sleep on? Does it provide you with the quality of sleep you deserve? Do you ever wake up with any type of sleep soreness whatsoever, do you toss and turn or suffer from back pain? Have you ever heard of a SEALY mattress? There are a number of reasons why people might be considering investing in a new sleep system. Maybe you’ve been considering it yourself for whatever reason. If you have been or know someone who may be in the market for a new mattress, then a great place to start that process would be Rife’s Furniture-right here in Albany. They carry a great assortment of these innovative mattresses which include the Posturpedic, the Optimum, and the Hybrid just to name a few. To make a long story short, in the 70’s, NASA developed a memory foam material to relieve astronauts of the pressures of high levels of “G force” in which they had to endure. Because of them, there are millions of people now experiencing a new level of sleep quality night after night. Many millions of dollars were spent researching and developing this visco elastic memory foam material, and it carries with it, a number of amazing features. For one, it’s

For example, you apply a force with your hand to it and it will completely mold to every contour of your hand, but once you remove the force (your hand), it will return to its exact initial shape. Now Sealy has introduced the new Gel memory foam with Outlast Opticool. Outlast acts like a temperature regulator and keeps you at an even temperature all night long. How it works is if you become too hot it pulls your heat down into the mattress. If you become to cool it will release the heat back up to you. So you will not wake up

alkaline state and facilitates the absorption of the induced products. The skin lightens and smoothes visibly. When using ultrasound to deliver products into the skin, the main mechanism at work is that molecules are being broken down for easier penetration into the skin. Ultrasound is also effective in treating cellulite. There is an influence on lymph and its overall ability to stimulate cellular activity in tissues of all depths. This assists in the drainage of cellular debris and accumulated toxins. Ultrasound waves are absorbed differently and reflected differently by different tissues. Ultrasonic transducers will offer different ranges of output. • 5 megahertz reach very superficially • 3 megahertz reach adipose tissue , or bone • 1 megahertz reach deep muscle and bone • The most commonly used transducers in skin care will offer between 1 and 3 megahertz.

The Sealy Optimums have no springs or coils, so they help with arthritis, fibromyalgia, back/hip pain and increased blood circulation. They are also energy absorbing, body conforming, durable, hypoallergenic and considered the most comfortable mattress in the world. Finding Care for Your Pet While You Travel
Cheer
If you’re planning on traveling this summer and aren’t able to take your pet with you, finding a place for them to stay or someone to watch them while you’re away can be stressful. After all, pets are a part of our family and we want to be sure they’re in good hands. First, you’ll need to decide if a boarding kennel or a pet sitter who can stay in your home is right for you. If you think your pet would enjoy being around other animals and would be comfortable in a kennel environment, boarding your pet might be the best option. Ask people you know if they have any recommendations. Most kennel facilities will allow you to take a tour of their facility before you decide to board your pet with them. Once you make the decision to board, be sure to schedule your pet’s stay well in advance. Many facilities can book up quickly, especially over holidays. Your pet will need to pass a temperament test before their stay, and you’ll want to be sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations. Bring your pet’s own food to a kennel.

This may reduce the chance of diarrhea or upset stomach. And you’ll want to find out if you’re able to bring your toys, blankets, treats, or bedding for your pet. If your pet craves routine and the comforts of home, finding a pet sitter might be the best option. Ask family, friends, and your vet if they have recommendations. Meet with potential pet sitters and allow them to spend some time with your pet. Once you decide on a sitter, you’ll want to provide clear instructions, a schedule, and emergency contact information while you’re away. As we move full swing into summer, we are approaching a part of the season that many dog owners dread: The Fourth of July. There are a lot of people who have dogs that are afraid of loud noises who know exactly what I am talking about. This is the time when our office starts getting the calls requesting tranquilizers for phobic dogs. There are some circumstances where a dog’s irrational fear very well may lead to serious injury or property damage. One of our patients once broke through a sliding glass door, suffering serious lacerations, then ran out into the street and got hit by a car. When the stakes are that high we prescribe heavy medication, but in less extreme circumstances there may be some other options to consider. One thing to realize is that just being nervous is not life-threatening, and a dog doesn’t stand much of a chance of learning to cope with the fear if given mind altering drugs. Dogs with phobias of the vacuum cleaner or other noise making appliances can often lose their fear through a process of desensitization by which they are exposed to ever increasing doses of the scary thing until they learn it is not a problem. There are actually CD’s that can be purchased that allow owners to play fireworks or thunderstorm sounds while slowly

increasing the volume. Desensitization is a gradual process which takes time and patience. This process is a little harder to control when the neighbors decide to randomly unleash their illegal arsenal in the weeks leading up to the 4th of July. We can help guide our dogs by ignoring their fearful behavior by either going about our business as usual, or engaging them in active play, thus demonstrating by our own actions that there is nothing for them to worry about. Punishing anxious behavior will only make the situation worse. Even less helpful is our natural tendency to comfort our distressed pets with affection. Petting them at the wrong time will only reinforce their anxious state. There are a variety of non-drug options that can also be used to help calm anxious dogs. Dog Appeasing Pheromone or DAP is a synthetic version of a pheromone produced by a lactating dog that help her puppies feel relaxed and bonded to their siblings and mother. DAP infused collars, sprays, and room diffusers may help give environmental cues that let a dog know that the situation is alright. There is also a new prescription diet made by Royal Canin called CALM that has natural ingredients like tryptophan and specific milk proteins that can bring down the tension in anxiety prone pets.

The Destroyermen: Into the Storm
Reviews
by Taylor Anderson
You know an author has got a knack for writing when he is able to make a ridiculous-sounding plot and turn it into a good story. Here’s the basic plot: a World War II U.S. Navy destroyer goes through a space-time warp and winds up on an alternate Earth where humans never evolved; but lemur-cat-people and lizard-people did, both of whom have roughly medieval technology. The lizard men are trying to eradicate the lemurs from the world, and the human destroyermen take the side of the lemurs and fight back. Sounds silly? Perhaps. Some of the book is taken up with what alternate history buffs love most: the working out of technical problems (i.e. How do you find oil on a planet that doesn’t use it?) and the playing out of what-if scenarios, in this case the dual-species evolution. However, most of the novel is just that—a novel, and a good one at that. Taylor Anderson is able to create real characters in this very unreal
setting. When we follow the decisionmaking process of the captain, how he deals with the situation is more important than what Scott that situation is. The Givens, interworking of the Browsers crew plays out very Bookstores, well indeed, and the and fellow series promises to be reviewer, a good one to follow (especially since daughter, I’ve read the backs Amanda of some of the later Givens books in the series and he throws in a few good plot twists along the way)! Generally, alternate history novels are shelved with science fiction. Today’s cross-genre audience would be just as happy to find this in a suspense section, right alongside Tom Clancy; it is, after all, primarily an action-packed novel about a Navy ship. So many of readers are accustomed to having a few vampires or wizards thrown into the mix, how much of a stretch can lizardmen be? Browser’s Bookstores in Albany and Corvallis are Points for Profit businesses partners so save your receipts for participating non-profit organizations.
“Dante’s Inferno” The Movie
There are a handful of movies that I have waited through the entire home video revolution to own and be able to watch in my living room. One of those is “Dante’s Inferno” made by Fox Studios in 1935 and starring a very young Spencer Tracy. It did not surface during the VHS era but has just now been released on DVD featuring a pristine restored print. “Dante’s Inferno” was one third of a book, “The Divine Comedy,” written in the early 1300’s and graphically illustrated with engravings by Gustave Doré in the 1800’s. The Inferno portion of the book dealt with the nine levels of Hell and was meant to shock people onto a path of righteousness. This movie is not a filming of the book. The “Dante’s Inferno” in the movie refers to a carnival attraction on an east coast amusement pier. People buy tickets to go inside the attraction where a narrator tells them about famous sinners of history. Along comes the brash young Spencer Tracy character, who worms his way into taking over the attraction and eventually the whole pier. His greed leads him to bribe officials to look the other way at safety violations with disastrous results. He then tries owning a gambling ship but greed again causes issues that result in the ship
falling victim to a huge fire at sea. The highlight of this movie is an eight minute segment in the middle where the Gustave Doré’s engravings depicting Hell come to life. Huge sets and Rick hundreds of extras are Rogers involved into making Movies Dore’s visions all too and DVDs real. After seeing this sequence, you’ll agree that Hell is HELL and a place to be avoided at all costs. Remember, this movie was made decades before computer animation and other special effects techniques used today were even thought of. It all had to be done using live actors. As for the character portrayed by Spencer Tracy in the movie, he is a real piece of work and deserves everything he gets. This story is based on two real events including the gigantic fire that destroyed the Luna Park amusement area of Coney Island in the early 1900’s. The fire started because of unsafe conditions in a water ride being built called Hell’s Gate. The ship fire was based on a real fire on the Morro Castle which ran aground at Asbury Park, New Jersey, a year before this movie was made. “Dante’s Inferno” is now available on DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Video through TCM.com, Amazon and other usual internet sources.
