125 Years of Pioneer Picnic

The beautiful Rose Petal Fountain at the Oregon Garden.

The Oregon Garden A Mid-Valley Treasure

The Oregon Garden is officially 11 years old at the end of June. Now is a great time to plan a day or a weekend to enjoy more than 20 themed gardens on an 80 acre site that truly offers something for everyone. In the Children’s Garden, kids of all ages can dig for the bones of our Cementosaurus, play in the hobbit hole, watch the train go around on a track and wonder about the weird plants garden. While the garden can be navigated entirely on foot, the narrated tram ride is a must-do for just about every visitor. Unlimited use of the tram is included in the admission price, and it’s a great way to see an overview of the entire garden, or to take a ride to one of the tram stops in along the path, where you can get off, explore, and get back on the next time it comes around. The colors and the textures are constantly changing, even from day to day, as the garden displays perennials of many descriptions, and every year they plant over 40,000 annuals, creating brilliant swathes of color throughout the grounds. Monthly programs include at least one Garden University class as well as activities for children through our Junior Gardener’s Club. Check their website at www. oregongarden.org for information about all of the

monthly programs and their special events. The Oregon Garden features a number of special events, too! Join them for their July 3rd celebration, featuring a concert and grand fireworks display, along with children’s activities. “Movies in the Garden” is a new event this year, and you can join them each Thursday July 19 - August 23 for outdoor movies. The car show in the Garden is on August 26, featuring more than 100 cars and live music. Then comes fall, and it’s time to get your boots on for the Barn Dance & Pig Roast. Harvest in the Garden, featuring Scarecrows in the garden for the entire month of October, and Family Harvest Days each Saturday. The Oregon Garden Resort, a craftsman-style inn, beckons right next door. Guests can snuggle into one of 103 rooms, each located in a cottage, and each room with its own fireplace and private, landscaped patio. The main lodge features a lounge with live music nightly, a restaurant highlighting Northwest cuisine, a full-service spa. Every day is a good day to enjoy the beauty and inspiration you will find at The Oregon Garden located at 879 W. Main Street in Silverton, east of Salem.

One of the entries in last year’s Pioneer Picnic Grand Parade.

By Rick Rogers It’s officially the oldest continuous annual celebration in the State of Oregon. It all started in 1887 at Brownsville in South Linn County as a reunion of pioneers who had traveled to the west on the Oregon Trail. The official Pioneer Picnic website says that in the beginning families from throughout the Willamette Valley came for the event on horseback and in wagons and buggies to pitch their tents in Brownsville’s Pioneer Park. Early Pioneer Picnics featured three days of fun, fellowship and worship services. Those that gathered in the park would entertain each other with recitations, plays and musical numbers. They would spread their blankets on the ground and there was always plenty to eat and drink. Spirited Sunday sermons were also an important part of the festivities. As the century changed, the event continued to grow adding parades, carnivals and more entertainment to appeal to the entire family. This year’s 125th annual Pioneer Picnic will take place in Brownsville on June 15, 16 and 17 with all kinds of fun, games and activities ranging from a quilt and fiber arts show to the popular annual talent show. There is also a flower show, a tractor show, a horse play day, square dancing, a spelling bee and many more performances and activities to take part in or just enjoy. This year, the Coronation of the 2012 Pioneer Picnic Queen will take place on the park stage at 7PM on the night of June 15. Earlier in the day, the annual kiddy parade will make its way through downtown Brownsville at 1PM. The Grand Parade takes place at 10AM on Saturday, June 16. Each of the three days will see a great Wagon Train Breakfast in the park from 7AM until 10AM. But wait, that’s not all, there is a baseball tournament on Saturday and a 5 on 5 basketball tournament on Sunday. You also won’t want to miss the Logger’s Jamboree Sunday afternoon. You will want to head to Brownsville for a weekend of fun as you take part in the 125th celebration of this historic picnic. For more information, go online to: www. historicbrownsville.com.

Beware the Sneaky Saboteur! If you watch the news this evening, you are bound to hear a story about the “national obesity crisis”. It is a hot topic. The average American is overweight and facing a variety of physical and emotional health-consequences as a result. How did we get here? The formula is simple: We ingest more calories than we burn. The body is a remarkable score keeper. Each time we fail to utilize all the calories we take in, our body notes the overage. When we have accumulated approximately 3500 extra calories in this way (poof!), we gain a pound on the scale. If you are trying to lose weight, you have probably already made some adjustments in your diet. However, if you are a typical dieter, you have overlooked a very sneaky source of calories. Whether you are dining at home or in a restaurant, do you factor the beverage into your meal selection? According to a recent study, most people do not. Our mind tends to “skip over” liquids when we evaluate the nutritional value of the food in front of

us, perhaps because drinks do not give us a sense of fullness. Unfortunately, a calorie is a calorie, whether or not it fills you up! How often have Pamela you passed on the Becker, RpH French fries at a Rice’s fast food restaurant, Pharmacy, opting for just a Gifts & Wine burger and fountain drink (non-diet)? A “Pill Box Pharmacy” Were you secretly pleased with your restraint? Sit down. The shocking truth is; you would have consumed 100 fewer calories if you had ordered the hamburger with a small fry and a calorie-free beverage. After lunch, did you stop to refill your large regular soda in order to have something to sip on through the afternoon? If so, you consumed the caloric equivalent of another halfmeal, but you’ll be no less hungry at dinner time. Did your day begin with a flavored coffee? Will it end with a cocktail? It is easy to “rack up” an extra 1000 calories per day without thinking. But remember, the body won’t forget to count those “sneaky” calories, and every 3500 calories adds Saboteur continued on page 18

A Vitamin from the Sun

Earth

Ahh the sun is shining in the Willamette Valley (finally). Time for biking, hiking and working in the garden. But with the sun comes a funny phrase you hear from time to time: “I’m out getting my Vitamin D”. Whaaaa? A Vitamin from the sun?!? Well it’s true. When we are catching some rays we are also catching a dose of one of the most amazing, important and unfortunately, deficient vitamins around. First let’s talk about what Vitamin D does for you. It helps you absorb vital minerals such as calcium and phosphorus to make healthy bones and energetic cells. It helps your nervous system control your muscles. It encourages cell growth and is an important part of your immune system, helping to fight off infection and autoimmune disease. It even enhances the action of insulin in your body. People who are low in Vitamin D may suffer from the following: • Back Pain • Decreased breathing • Cancer • Colds • Congestive Heart Failure • Diabetes • Fatigue • Hearing Loss • Influenza • Osteoporosis • Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD) • And more...

component to your overall health. We get it through the sun when the UV light converts a chemical in the skin that becomes Vitamin D or cholecalciferol. Vitamin D is then converted by the liver and the kidneys so Dr. Jason that it can be useful Young throughout your body. Most organs have receptors for Vitamin D indicating that it is used for a wide variety of purposes. If you don’t get a lot of sun exposure... say you live in the Pacific North West... then it is easy to become deficient in Vitamin D. In fact more people suffer Heart Attacks, Depression, Autoimmune flare ups, etc in the winter and fall and this is thought to be because of lower Vitamin D production in the skin due to a lack of sunlight. Supplementing Vitamin D can really help improve these problems. So how much should you take and what kind? The RDA for Vitamin D is 400 IU for kids and 800 for adults. This is WAAAAY too low. That is how much you need to avoid a condition called Ricketts but it is no where near enough to be as healthy as you want to be. When you consider that an adult will use 1,000-4,000 IU of Vitamin D daily then it becomes clear that your dose needs to be higher. People with great sun exposure will manufacture about 10,000 IU of Vitamin D per day. I recommend that adults take at least 4,000-10,000 IU per day. There are no reported cases of

Why Join Selco?

Idea

Prospective members frequently ask why they should join SELCO Community Credit Union. Answers vary from simple to complex, depending on how much or what type of information is desired. For me to answer this question, I like to look back at how and why I became a credit union member, and ultimately an employee, myself. When I graduated from college I took a few months off to enjoy a relaxed Oregonsummer. Devoid of any bills to pay, I felt little urgency to join the work force. As the fall arrived and my student loan payments began to draw near, it was time to find employment. I had interviewed for a number of jobs in the field in which I got my degree (Marketing) but I was finding that my lack of experience was hindering my ability to land the job I wanted. My mother, a School District 4j employee and long-time SELCO member, recommended I look at getting some experience in the financial industry. This sounded reasonable, but in my mind it would only be temporary. Shortly thereafter, I submitted an application to be a part-time teller with SELCO. The only reason why I chose SELCO was that I had a savings account there (since the age of 10) and it was a somewhat

familiar place for me. Far from what I wanted to do, or thought I wanted to do, this was to be “just a job” to gain some experience before I moved on to other things. That was 15 Darin years ago, and I’m Klarr still a proud SELCO SELCO employee to this day. Community SELCO has CU Branch offered me Manager opportunity to grow as an employee. Currently I’m a branch manager but have held numerous positions at several of our branches. We offer the same opportunity for growth to our members. Sure, we strive to offer the best value on your money… whether you are depositing it or borrowing it, and offer a deep line of products and services. But ultimately those things can be found just about anywhere. The difference at SELCO is the people you work with. The feeling of family I get as an employee is the same feeling we want you to experience as a member. We want you to consider us your friend, but to also consider us a trusted resource that offers you an opportunity to work with professionals who are out for your best interest. But is sure feels good when you come in and someone knows you by name and asks how your family is doing before getting down to business. This is the SELCO way and we would love to share the experience with you.

Stuff Adirondack Chairs

Air Conditioners for Greater Energy Efficiency

Combining Comfort With Timeless Style

Travel

Adirondack chairs have been around for over a century, but their timeless design is still as popular as ever among those of us looking for comfortable and relaxing outdoor furniture. The original Adirondack chair was invented in 1903 by a man called Thomas Lee, whilst vacationing with his family in Westport, New York. The simple but sturdy design, incorporating the characteristic slanted back and wide armrests, was patented by Harry Bunuel, who named this new style of outdoor chair after the nearby Adirondack region. He went on to successfully sell his Adirondack chairs made from hemlock to summer residents of the resort of Westport for the next 20 years. The classic design continues to be a favorite to this day. The enduring appeal of Adirondack furniture lies in the fact that not only does it look great in almost any recreational setting, from porches to lawns, decks to patios, it is also incredibly comfortable to sit in. Adirondack chairs are made from different types of wood, including cedar, teak and mahogany. The wood can be left to weather naturally, stained to preserve its natural color, or painted in any shade you choose. Modern alternatives that are virtually

maintenance free are recycled plastic chairs, which do look amazingly like real wood. These days, the original design has been adapted to create various different styles of furniture, including Adirondack rocking chairs and porch swings. Reclining chairs with cushions for extra comfort are a favorite, as are all-in-one styles that come with a retractable ottoman. For a totally coordinated new look, there are all kinds of Adirondack sets to choose from, such as those with matching side tables, footrests and ottomans. The wide armrests are perfect for holding drinks or books, and it’s really no wonder that this traditional type of outdoor furniture is still so sought after today. An Adirondack chair is the ideal place to relax and unwind on a long sunny day! Come see all of the great seating selections at Rife’s and explore your options! Are you aware of the fact that around one sixth of the total electricity produced in the United States goes in air conditioning buildings? The U.S. Department of Energy has therefore increased the minimum energy efficiency rating for air conditioners on 23rd January 2006. The increased energy efficiency ratings would be useful for all, as it would help in reducing the energy bills as well as pollution. Do you know how efficient your air conditioner is? One way you can easily find out is through SEER, or a seasonal energy efficiency ratio measurement. SEER is used to set a basic standard for machines that are friendly to the environment. It rates an air conditioner on the basis of the amount of energy it can effectively use. If the SEER number of the machine is high, it indicates that the efficiency is also high. Since the concerns about the environment have increased, the amount of the SEER on air conditioning machines has also gone up. Whereas in 1992, the minimum SEER standard was 10, the newest law passed in January 2006 has raising the minimum SEER to 13. This rise in the SEER from 10 to 13 means that the

efficiency of a particular air conditioner has improved by 30 percent. However, a machine with a higher SEER would mean that its price and the installation costs would also mount up. But this does not really seem to affect most people as they presume that a higher initial investment would ultimately be cost effective in the long run, and they would be able to save on their energy bills this way. If you are impressed by the fact that one sixth of the United States’ electricity goes into air conditioning, you would even more pleased to know that The Department of Energy assumes that by 2030, the energy and SEER laws will be further changed. The energy that they would thus save would actually provide enough electricity for 26 million homes for an entire year! So the best way you can save energy is to bring home a good quality air conditioner. The most vital thing is regular maintenance of your cooling unit. You can ensure maximum efficiency of your air conditioner by changing the filters and verifying the functioning of the machine from time to time. Regular maintenance saves energy and protects your system. Call SERVCO at 541-451-5090 today and one of our certified technicians will install your new air conditioner or service your existing one.

Styles of Summer

New to the Miche line is our Cintura Bag! For summer we’re introducing two styles: the Aimee (grey) and Willow (yellow). Cintura is the Italian word for “belt,” which hints to this bag’s great versatility feature. No, these are not your mother’s fanny pack! These are the much more chic “distant cousin” of the fanny pack. They can be worn around your waist or you can wear them over the shoulder and across your body for more traditional carrying. Aimee offers even more options for versatility—she features loops in the back that you can thread your own belt through. Simply take off the straps she comes with and weave your belt through the loops to create your own original look. This is the must-have accessory this summer as you enjoy your vacations and travel to exotic destinations (we can dream, right?) The Cintura gives you hands-free options for carrying a handbag— which will help you enjoy a more carefree summer!

Attack of the Slime Monsters! By Karen Rogers

the flavors of spring

As strong, hardy Oregonians we are used to confronting forces of nature that would scare effete Easterners into conniption fits‌Like rain, slugs and snails. The first time my New Jersey native Uncle spotted a banana slug he was ready to grab his 12gauge shotgun! Slugs are a real nuisance. Have you ever accidentally grabbed one bare-handed while weeding? My poor Dad hit The perfect snail trap. an enormous one while operating a string trimmer. The ensuing slime bath was very nasty‌ hysterically funny to me but not to him. We now have to deal with an imported varmint- a thin shelled brown snail. How it got here no one seems to know, but they are everywhere. My hostas look like lace! When I’m weeding, I keep a pickle jar full of salt water handy and drop them into it- salt kills them instantly. Lay out boards at night and both slugs

and snails will take refuge under them and you can dispose of them in the morning. Also, these wicked gastropods are heavy topers- they all love beer and will gladly over indulge and drown. But how do you keep out the rain? I use half- gallon milk jugs. Cut a rectangle about 1 high and 4-5 wide in the side of the carton. Keep it an inch above the bottom. Fill it with cheap beer and set it in infested areas. If you make it, they will come. Be sure to clean it every day or it can get really nastyjust unscrew the top and tip out the contents, rinse and refill. I hate to use slug bait because I like to eat what I produce and this is a good solution. It’s a cheap and fairly easy way to get rid of these icky creatures. If you should ever find out WHO introduced this new snail to our area, some of us gardeners would LOVE to have a nice chat with them.

Add the Ambience! Most of our focus in the yard and garden during early June is centered on planting. After all, if we want to reap we must sow! It’s so rewarding to see plants coming up and flowers blossoming. Manager’s Corner By Kathy Dennis, Director of Points for Profit Q: I have been reading about your monthly meetings at the Eagles on the last Tuesday of every month and they really sound like fun! I am not a member of any of the businesses or charities you work with but I support many of them. Are “outsiders” allowed to attend those monthly meetings? Also, if I shop at some of your businesses can I turn in my receipts to one of your charities even if I am not a member? A: What great questions! Of course you can attend and bring all your friends! Points for Profit is here to help sustain our community. We do that by bringing in businesses that you can trust so you can save those receipts to help those in the community that you love (our non-profit partners). We encourage all to not only come to the meetings but to shop local and save your receipts! The more of us that pay attention to where we are doing business the greater impact we can have in our own community! The meetings are like a monthly family reunion where you can meet the Points for Profit family, enjoy a great meal and win some awesome prizes! Dinner is only $8 each and includes your meal, beverage and dessert! Just call 541-7912901 and let us know you are coming! We’ll see you there!

Summer draws near, and everyone is spending every possible minute of free time outside in the beautiful, sunny weather. There’s plenty to do out there, but if you grow tired of the sports and the driving, you might consider looking into some outdoor hobbies! ASA Hobbies in Albany carries some things that might be interesting to someone who is bored and outside. Consider model rockets, for example. Model rockets are easy to assemble, and easy to launch. On top of that, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get started. Just find an open area with calm air, and fire one off! Altitudes range from 500 feet, all the way up to 1500 or more! It’s easy to do and lots of fun. Try it out! Then, there are the radio control hobbies with boats, planes, helicopters,

trucks and cars. RC technology these days is advancing rapidly and it’s getting a whole lot more fun. Find out what might be the best RC hobby for you at ASA Hobbies! When it’s too hot outside we welcome you to check out our slot car tracks! Slot cars are tons of fun, and easy to get into. The racing is fierce, and the cars are fast, which makes this the perfect indoor hobby! That is; perfect along with plastic models. Plastic models have been around longer than slot cars, and continue to thrive as an excellent indoor activity. Whether you’re inside or outside, summer time is the best time to enjoy whatever hobby you want! You have tons of options, so make sure to try them all! Also remember that ASA Hobbies is a business partner in the Points for Profit program so save those receipts and turn them into your favorite participating non-profit organization.

Buying a New Home ... Going Without the Stress! Buys You’ve probably heard it said many times that buying a new home is one of the most stressful things you can do. In fact, in terms of stress, it’s right up there with getting married and having a new baby. Buying a new home is an exciting time too, though: here’s how to do it the easy, stress-free way!

Don’t break the bank: A palatial new pad may seem worth breaking out the credit for, but struggling to pay the bills is no fun at all – as you’ll find out. To minimize financial stress, it’s always a good idea to set a strict budget and stick to it, no matter how tempted you feel! Shop around for a mortgage and insurance, and remember to budget for any renovations you’ll need to take care off soon after moving in.

The last thing you want is to be stuck with a bridging loan (a loan to tide you through the gap between buying one home and selling another), so make sure you have somewhere to go, even if it is the spare room in your parents’ house, in case your chain breaks down.

Summer is approaching and its time to tame the lawns and start the gardens. With these activities come certain hazards that all pet owner/weekend garden warriors should be aware of. Pesticide ingestion is one of the most common reasons for an emergency trip to the veterinarian, particularly ingestion of slug bait. Slug baits containing metaldehyde can make dogs very sick and even die. Signs depend on the amount ingested and include muscle tremors, hypersalivation, seizures, bounding heart rate and abdominal pain. Seizures can be so severe that anesthesia may be necessary to get them to stop. If you have a dog or cat and use slug bait choose a product that contains iron phosphate and is labeled safe for pets. Other pesticides that are harmful to pets include mole and gopher bait and most rat poisons. Unfortunately these baits don’t just attract rodents. Consider trapping instead. What’s more these poisons are passed to dogs and cats that may happen to eat an exposed rodent. The National Pesticide Information Center (npic.orst.edu, 800-858-7378) based at Oregon State University is an excellent resource for more information various pesticides. Mulch and compost are also potential dangers for dogs that tend to be indiscriminate about what they eat. Compost heaps can harbor fungal toxins that can cause a dog

to have severe tremors and become hyperthermic. Signs can develop just two hours after exposure. Compost piles can also harbor botulinum toxin as well as salmonella and E. coli that can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. If you want to mulch consider investing in products that contain the material rather than mulching in piles. Cocoa bean shells are found in some commercial garden mulches and if ingested may cause symptoms similar to chocolate toxicity, including restlessness, bounding heart rate and vomiting and diarrhea. Fertilizer and herbicides can also be toxic to pets. If using fertilizers or herbicides keep your pets off treated surfaces until product is dry and carefully follow instructions to avoid over application. Certain fertilizers like rose food may contain dangerously high levels of organophosphates that can kill a dog if ingested. Consider using natural, organic remedies that may be far less toxic by visiting the website for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (healthylawns.org). Be aware that some organic products like bone meal may tempt some dogs to ingest them and can be toxic as well. If you are ever in doubt as to whether or not a product is potentially harmful please contact Albany Animal Hospital at 541-9268817 or visit the ASPCA website (www.aspca.org) or the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline. com).

Singing Through Summer “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” is a great musical number to usher in summer. It is just one of the many memorable songs penned by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein for their 1945 Broadway stage musical “Carousel”, and later in the 1956 movie of the same name starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. It was not Rogers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration. That came when their musical production of “Oklahoma” premiered on Broadway in 1943. It was a play that ran all the way until it finally closed in 1948. It was made into a movie again pairing Mac Rae and Jones in 1955 The popularity of the two shows caused Twentieth Century Fox to contract the pair to write a score for a remake of an old 1933 Will Rogers non-musical movie named “State Fair”. It would produce several hit songs and would be the only time Rogers and Hammerstein would ever write a score together specifically for a movie. The original 1945 Technicolor “State Fair” is nearly forgotten now but is a real musical gem with a terrific mid-40’s cast of Fox’s

top stars. “State Fair” was remade in 1962 by Fox and was unsuccessful despite the cast including Pat Boone, Ann Margaret and, out of retirement for her last film appearance, Alice Faye. Rick On Broadway and Rogers in films Rogers and Movies Hammerstein could and DVDs do no wrong. There was “South Pacific” in 1949, “Flower Drum Song” in 1958 and “Sound of Music” in 1959. All were made into movies in the next few years with “Sound of Music” becoming one of the most successful movies ever released. Fortunately for us, all of these great Rogers and Hammerstein musicals are available on DVD for us to enjoy whenever we want and make a great summer’s evening entertainment. I am old enough to have seen all of these in a theater when they were new releases. Whether its the song “Some Enchanted Evening” from “South Pacific”, or the rousing main theme sung by a stage full of cowboys and ranchers in “Oklahoma” it’s music that will live for decades to come, through movies and stage revivals. Happy summer everyone!

The Passage By Justin Cronin If I were to recommend a book which is the first of a trilogy of vampire epic fantasy, at least half of this article’s readers would just groan, say, “Not another vampire book!” and skip to the next page. And if I were to recommend a novel written by a critically praised and award-winning author which intelligently treats dreams, souls, spiritual corruption, love, and redemption, the other half of this article’s readers might groan and say, “Save it for Oprah!” and skip to the next page. The Passage, by Justin Cronin, is both of these things. It is truly a work of literature: although there are nail-biting action scenes, and there are harrowing accounts of what may be the end of the world, this is about vampires the same way that Frankenstein is about monsters, or Moby-Dick about whales: as a vehicle to reveal the inner workings of the human soul. The set-up of The Passage sounds like one of the worst horror B-films of all time: over a century before the

story begins, a government experiment gone terribly wrong transformed unwitting humans into vampire-like monsters who then broke out of their confinement. Scott Horrible, demonic, Givens, and nearly Browsers Book Stores unstoppable, they slew turned most of Albany & civilization within Corvallis a matter of a few short years. Sound bad yet? It gets worse, because our story now starts, and we have small groups of humans who struggle to survive against the elements and the vampires; they use technology which they no longer fully understand; and their numbers are shrinking. Enter into all of this, a girl…A girl who seemingly has some sort of connection with the vampires...A girl who may be one herself. Despite the hackneyed plot outline, the writing is superlative, the storytelling is gripping, the characters are realistic, and the tale is memorable. I personally dislike starting a series before it has been published in its entirety, but in this case, I’m going to read book two as soon as it comes out (this October, by the way.)

Cellulite and Inch Loss Cellulite refers to the dimpled or orange peel appearance on the thighs, buttocks, hips and other areas. Cellulite is more sensitive than normal skin and can feel cold to the touch. It may appear whiter than the rest of the skin. Hard cellulite which is found in active women such as dancers or athletes is the hardest to reduce because it attaches to the muscle. Oft cellulite on the other hand is more noticeable but easier to reduce. Cellulite is develops when the skin sends down anchoring connective tissue to the muscle. In between this connective tissue and muscle are fat deposits. When the fat deposits become hard and large they push against the connective tissue and stretch it, which therefore creates the outward appearance of lumps and bumps. This can because by a number of things poor circulation, lack of exercise, poor lymphatic system drainage, food allergies, eating foods high in preservatives, yo-yo dieting, too much sun, lack of water, genetics, pregnancy, aging, smoking, tension and stress, medication. Primarily women develop cellulite

because there connective tissue is composed of x-shaped bands. These bands bind the skin to deeper tissues such as fascia or Lindie M. muscle. The part Truex, that is attached to Boulevard the skin traps the Boutique Spa fat, and the fat ends & Skin Care up pushing on the Clinic skin creating the 541-791-2800 lump and bump effect. Most cellulite develops in girls around the age of 14 and increases through the years due to the thinning and redistribution of the subcutaneous skin. Men rarely develop cellulite because their connective tissue is perpendicular, which heads the collection of fat build up. Around 80% of western women believe they have cellulite. Even if a person has only 15% body fat, that person can have cellulite. Toxins and fat that have built up in the body are a large part of cellulite, and can affect women of any weight, size, or body structure. Sadly liposuction does not permanently get rid of cellulite. Any cellulite program should include stimulation of the body’s elimination functions, increasing the

Why Wear Sunglasses?

Manners The most often answers to why we wear sunglasses are for comfort and fashion. From our side of the question, there are several very important health related reasons. We, the Custom Eyes of Albany staff, see some of the consequences of unprotected exposure of eyes to UV rays from the sun. Several of these problems are cataracts, photokeratitis (snow blindness), pterygium, and skin cancer around the eyelids. We feel good sunglasses are most important for the youth. In the first place they often spend more hours in the sun than many of the adults. Also the lens, in the eyes of the youth, absorbs a higher percentage of UV than occurs in adults. Most research states that 50 to 80 percent of a person’s lifetime sun exposure occurs before the age of 18. In Australia children are required to come to school with sunglasses, long-sleeves, and a brimmed hat. Cataracts develop to the degree of vision obstruction for most people in “their mature years.” One of the main contributing factors is the effect of

exposure to UV rays. As we age, the lens in the eye continues to grow in thickness by growing new layers. The lens is the part of the eye that absorbs the UV. Some research shows that the process of cataract development is accelerated with increased UV exposure. Pterygium is a benign (noncancerous) growth of the conjunctiva of the eye. It most often grows from the nasal side of the sclera. In advanced stages, it can affect vision as it invades the cornea. Excessive exposure to UV rays, from the sun and reflected by water is one of the main causes of pterygium growth. Other contributing environmental factors are wind and blowing sand. Water-sport and snowsport athletes should wear eye protection that blocks 100% of UV A and B. Photokeratitis is a burn of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) by ultraviolet B rays (UVB.) This occurs, most often, at high altitudes on highly reflective snow. Fresh snow can reflect 80 percent of UV rays, nearly doubling overall exposure to solar UV radiation. Other sources of potential corneal photokeratitis are sun tanning beds,

This time of year so many of us suffer from allergies and most people are surprised to learn that cockroaches are a trigger of allergies and asthma attacks. The pests’ saliva, droppings and Sean decomposing Meiner bodies Healthy contain Home Pest allergen Control, LLC proteins (541) 570-0095 known to trigger allergies and increase the severity of asthma symptoms, especially in children. Most people are aware of typical indoor allergens including mold, pet dander, dust and second-hand smoke, but should also be mindful of any cockroach infestations in their home or other places such as schools. Cockroach allergens are typically found in areas that are hard to see, such as under appliances and sinks, so it’s important to periodically check those areas, keeping them clean and dry.” Cockroaches also spread disease such as Salmonella by picking up germs on the spines of their legs, easily contaminating food and surfaces that they touch. They spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six types of parasitic worms and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. Here in the valley we have two species of roaches that can be commonly found and they are the Brown Banded Roach and the German Roach. The more common of the two species is the German Roach and it is typically found in homes and restaurants. They hide in cracks and crevices of cupboards and

We recommend these tips to prevent cockroaches from infesting your home. • Do not save a large supply of paper grocery bags or cardboard. • Seal cracks around the outside of the home to prevent pest entryways. • Vacuum frequently and dispose of garbage regularly. • Keep counters and floors clean and free of crumbs that attract pests. • Pay extra attention to kitchens and bathrooms especially under appliances and sinks, as these areas are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. If you suspect an infestation, contact Healthy Home Pest Control, LLC at 541-570-0095 to identify the species and recommend a course of treatment.

without professional help. Many people find that resting the jaw helps ease the pain. You can do this by eating soft foods, avoiding chewing gum and hard candies. We can also show you jaw exercises to stretch the jaw joints and relieve stress. For most people, the most effective treatment is a custom dental splint that fits over your over and lower teeth. This reduces the damage done from repeated clenching of the jaw or teeth grinding. If these conservative methods don’t work, you still have other options. The temporomandibular joints can be flushed out, or an injection of cortisone can help relieve inflammation and pain. Worse-case scenario, you might need surgery. But there are also tests that can be performed in the comfort and privacy of your own home. In short, there are many options available when it comes to receiving a sleep test. People who treat their sleep apnea are delighted by the benefits of good sleep which include: increased energy and mood, an improved performance at work and a renewed interest in hobbies and social activities. Many are also able to finally succeed with their weight-loss, fitness plans or their plans to quit smoking. But the greatest benefit patients get from treating their sleep apnea is the knowledge that they are no longer at risk from developing sleep apnea induced diseases such as hypertension, heart disease along with all the other negative conditions that it can cause. It’s June and time to begin preparing to close the second quarter of our businesses and time for a mid-year checkup. Many things if caught now will save you much grief in future months. For many businesses payroll is a place they struggle. Whether you do your payroll or have someone do it for you, precautions must be taken to prevent the following common mistakes. Businesses found to be out of compliance on these issues could have large tax bills and penalties. 1. Employees classified as independent contractors — You absolutely must get this right! The IRS has strict guidelines on qualifications of the two types of workers. Taxes due, benefits eligibility and whether the worker is issued a W-2 or 1099 all hinge on this. If this is wrong it results in a domino effect of serious issues. 2. Payroll Tax deadlines missed — Whether intentional or not this mistake can cost you serious penalties plus interest. It’s easy to get confused by the different taxes and when each one is due but you must keep this straight. 3. Incorrect Payroll Tax Calculations — You may believe your payroll tax calculations are correct if you use payroll software. However, the old

Home

Finds

“garbage-in, garbage-out” theory applies. Employees set up incorrectly or forgetting to enter payroll tax updates will make your software incorrect. 4. Garnishments — Garnishments have strict guidelines. Failure to adhere to garnishment rules or failing to make garnishment payments on time will result in steep fines. 5. Inadequate Records — There are not only IRS rules for what documents you must have on file but also where certain employee forms must be kept, such as I-9’s. While states and specific agencies vary, typically records, including time sheets, cancelled checks, and W-4 forms, need to be held for four to six years.

Grasscycling: Healthy Soils, Healthy Streams

Grasscycling is the environmentally friendly practice of replacing fertilizer with your grass clippings. Clippings are mostly made up of water, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus- essential nutrients to plant growth and the primary ingredients in fertilizer. When you grasscycle, these valuable nutrients are returned to the soil and help build a healthier lawn that requires less fertilizer. Studies show you can reduce your fertilizer rates by up to 50% without decreasing the quality of your grass. In fact, grasscycling can actually improve the quality of your lawn by contributing to fewer weeds, higher density, and greener grass.

When you grasscycle you can “Go Green” without turning your lawn brown.

Lawn products can end up in your stream Fertilizers, grass clippings, and yard debris are made up of nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus). During a rain event, these nutrients can be washed into streams and rivers. The pulse of nutrients creates blooms of algae and aquatic plants. When these plants die, they sink and begin to decompose. Decomposers, such as bacteria and microbes, use up oxygen and lower oxygen levels in the water. Lower dissolved oxygen levels can be harmful to fish populations and the food web.

NO MUSS, NO FUSS Concerned about clippings and clumps cluttering your lawn? Here are few tips you can try: • Use a broom or leaf blower to spread clumps • Mow when the grass is dry • Keep your mower blades sharp to get a clean cut • Try using a mulch mower to reduce the mess • Reduce fertilizer rates throughout the year
