Strawberry Time
Albany’s outdoor “Cool Pool” will open when school vacation begins.

Summer of Fun!
Points
With the arrival of June, one thing that quickly comes to mind is strawberries. We have been seeing strawberries grown in other states, even other countries, in our supermarkets for the past couple of months. But when it comes to fresh, plump, delicious berries, nothing beats locally grown strawberries arriving in June at stores and farmers’ markets throughout the mid-valley. Just the thought of strawberries stuffed with cream cheese and chocolate bits, strawberries on ice cream and strawberry shortcake makes my mouth water and wish that June could last all year. We can’t think about strawberries without mentioning the annual Lebanon Strawberry Festival taking place this year on June 5, 6, 7, and 8. This year marks the 105th annual festival and while the festival site is at Cheadle Lake Park, just east of Lebanon, a trip through the city’s downtown will convince you that everyone is in a strawberry mood. The festival features two fun parades, including a junior parade starting at 3rd and grant Streets at 2:30PM on June 6. The junior parade theme is “Strawberry Night Fever.” The huge grand parade, which draws thousands of spectators, winds its way through downtown Lebanon beginning at 11AM on Saturday, June 7. The grand parade theme this year is “Strawberries of the Round Table.” The parade concludes with the serving of the “World’s Largest Strawberry Shortcake” to over 15,000 spectators at the festival site. We can’t let June go by without mentioning another huge event. While not directly associated with strawberries, the 127th annual Pioneer Picnic in historic Brownsville offers three days of family fun on the weekend of June 20, 21, and 22. The event centers around downtown Brownsville and the adjacent Pioneer Park offering food, games, talent shows, a Logger’s Jamboree and much more. The grand parade will go through downtown Brownsville beginning at 10AM on Saturday, June 21. Here’s to the month of June offering fun, excitement and, oh yes, STRAWBERRIES!

Get ready for a busy summer of family fun throughout the mid valley. Not only does our beautiful area offer a wide variety of summer entertainment, there are also activities for every member of the family. From a day drive to visit the covered bridges located throughout the mid-valley, to walking tours of Albany’s nationally recognized historic districts, rich with Victorian architecture, we offer something for everyone. With school letting out in mid-June, the Albany Parks and Recreation Department will open its outdoor “Cool Pool” at Swanson Park near the Pacific Boulevard overpass. The pool offers great opportunities for a refreshing summer swim and a spectacular water slide. Your can also enjoy the fun paddle boats on Waverly Lake at the north end of Albany. When we get into the month of July, the activities really heat up with the start of the popular River Rhythms and Mondays at Monteith free concerts at Albany’s Monteith Riverpark. Also in Albany, Friday night will be filled with the popular free outdoor movies series on Friday nights, sponsored by the Albany Downtown Association. This year the film series, formerly known as Movies by Moonlight, will

become Movies at Monteith because the location is being changed from a parking lot on Water Street to the Riverpark where they will be projected on a giant, inflatable screen. Look for other free concerts and movies in Lebanon and Corvallis as well. Starting next month, check for the concert and movie schedules on the event calendar on page two of each issue of High Points. Let’s not forget the many popular events held in the mid-valley over the summer months, including the Linn County Fair in mid-July and the Benton county Fair in late July and early August. Another event that draws thousands of people to the area each year is the Wah-Chang Art and Air Festival with all of its hot-air balloons in late August. The Albany Visitor’s Association, the Albany Regional Museum, and the Monteith House Museum is sponsoring its “Journey to the Center of Albany” promotion for a third consecutive year, beginning with a kick-off celebration at the downtown Carnegie Library on June 14. Families with children can participate by getting special passports stamped a various locations and winning prizes ranging from Amtrak Tickets, a ride on a fire truck, and more. Gluten Free: Fad Diet? Lately there has been a lot of ridicule of the gluten-free lifestyle. Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel interviewed people who described themselves as gluten-free, asking them what gluten was. The answers were funny and nobody they showed actually knew that gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. The Business Insider website recently reported on a scientific study that tested how accurately people could self-diagnose gluten sensitivity. Reports like these have caused some people to think that gluten is a harmless protein and all of the hype is propagated by people who wear foil hats. Well, just as you wouldn’t go to your plumber for information on how to take care of your car, I would recommend that you don’t rely on sources like Jimmy Kimmel or Business Insider to help you make informed health decisions. While Jimmy Kimmel is hilarious and Business Insider knows a lot about business, neither really understands gluten sensitivity or the negative effects it has on people’s health. Gluten is actually Latin for “glue.” It is made up of two groups of protein
molecules: glutenins and gliadins. Either of these molecules can cause inflammation. You may have heard that only people who have celiac disease, an allergy to gluten causing severe gastrointestinal Dr. Jason problems, are harmed Young by gluten. The truth is that people with celiac disease aren’t the only ones who have an immune system response to gluten. This means that the body will produce antibodies and inflammation in response to gluten exposure. The degree to which this happens varies in every person. People with celiac disease have an extreme reaction to gluten. One common misunderstanding about gluten sensitivity is that it only causes gastrointestinal issues. In fact, that is only one manifestation of gluten sensitivity and may not even be the most common. Research has shown that people have been misdiagnosed as having Lou Gehrig’s disease when they are actually just sensitive to gluten instead. Gluten sensitivity leads to headaches, rashes, impaired brain function (“brain fog”, memory problems, ADHD symptoms, etc), and Gluten Free continued on page 14

Asthma
A friend recently shared an interesting attic find; a White House cook book compiled by President McKinley’s wife, Ida, in 1887. It proved to be a comprehensive household reference including recipes, menus, etiquette, laundry tips, and advice for healthy living. Being a member of the healthcare profession, I was drawn to the chapter on “caring for the sick.” As I leafed past remedies for coughs, diarrhea, earaches, and burns, I was surprised to find an asthma remedy: “Sufferers from asthma should get a muskrat skin and wear it over their lungs with the fur side next to the body, as it will bring certain relief.” Since I wrestle with allergies every spring that sometimes leave me wheezing, I am glad to be living in the 21st century! Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by tissue inflammation and muscular constriction of the airways. One may not be aware they have this condition until something triggers a “flare up” resulting in the coughing/ wheezing and general breathing difficulty we associate with classic asthma. Some typical asthma triggers are: pollen, pet dander, dust, smoke, cold air, illness, exercise, and stress. Ideally, one would avoid all triggers and thus avoid having asthma symptoms.

However, that is difficult since many triggers are air-borne agents. Asthma can be well managed by targeting the two primary characteristics; Pamela inflammation and Becker, RpH constriction of the Rice’s airways. Picture a garden hose that is “puffed up” on the inside, and then squeezed from the outside. When an airway is in this state, air flow is greatly restricted, and sometimes totally cut off. So, the first line of asthma therapy is known as a “controller”. Controllers are steroid medications (not the type used to enhance sports performance) that are usually inhaled. Steroids calm inflamed tissues which improves airflow, but they must be used routinely to be effective. Inhaled steroids help prevent asthma flare-ups, but they cannot be used to relieve an asthma attack. Thus, a second agent, known as a “rescue” inhaler is usually prescribed. “Rescue” inhalers address the muscular constriction of the airway which is prominent during an asthma attack. This type of inhaler quickly

Vision Insurance is affordable and will cost you $13.17 per month for individual and $21.17 per month for subscriber plus spouse. A family is $35.98 per month. What benefits do I get for the monthly premium? An examination for glasses will cost you a $10 copayment at a VSP Vision Doctor every 12 months, per person. For lenses and frames, you will pay $15 copayment every 24 months, per person. Lenses include single vision, bifocal, trifocal, and lentricular. Understanding Capital Gains in Real Estate
If The Walls Could Talk It’s Warming Up! Cheer
Is your roof ready for the heat of the summer? Attic spaces can get pretty warm when the mercury starts climbing, and that can spell trouble with a capital “T!” High heat shortens the life of your roofing, not to mention higher temperatures inside your home. A typical shingled roof has venting in the soffits or caves around the entire perimeter and along the roof. The air flows through the soffit vents and out through the roof vents moving the warm air out of your attic space. If you suspect you need additional venting, a qualified builder can lend you a hand. Or if you are handy, you can add the vents yourself. There are a few options for venting that can generally buy right off the shelf at your local building supply store. You should also replace your existing vents if they cannot be cleaned. The amount of soffit and roof

When you sell a stock, you owe taxes on your gain, or the difference between what you paid for the stock and what you sold it for. The same is true when selling a home (or a second home), but there are some special considerations. In real estate, capital gains are not based on what you paid for the home, but on its adjusted cost basis. Here are tips to help you calculate capital gains: • The purchase price of the home is the actual sale price, not the amount of money you contributed at closing. To calculate total adjustments add the following: - Cost of the purchase including transfer fees, attorney fees, and inspections. But do not include points you paid on your mortgage. - Cost of selling the home including attorney fees, inspections, real estate commissions, and money spent to fix up the home just prior to sale. - Cost of improvements made to the home including room additions, deck, etc. Improvements do not include repairing or replacing

As we glide into summer barbecuers everywhere rise and stretch their grill skills and shake off the Oregon dampLet’s COOK! One of American cuisines greatest dishes is baked beans. Not dumped from a can, but actually baked to perfection. First, brine your beans overnight as they soak. Brining makes the skin Homemade Baked Beans are the perfect more permeable to water and the beans compliment to any summertime picnic. stay firmer, not mushy when cooked. For 2 C dry white beans use 8 C warm add 2 drops of liquid smoke, but don’t water mixed with 2 tsp salt dissolved overdo it. Stir well and arrange the salt in it. Check the beans for dirt or small pork on top, cover and bake for about stones- my Mom once broke a tooth on four or more hours. relaxes the smooth muscle of the airways, which improves airflow. A “rescue” inhaler may be needed if the “controller” inhaler is not used regularly, or if one has been exposed to a particularly strong trigger. A “rescue” type inhaler should never be the sole treatment for asthmatics, because it does not fight inflammation, which is the underlying cause of the condition. Doctor’s often adjust the” controller” medication based on how often a “”rescue” inhaler is used by the patient. If you would like more information on asthma treatment and prevention stop by Rice’s Pharmacy. Our friendly staff will be happy to assist you.

Healthy Summer Tips Tomorrow, before you leave the house, slather on sunscreen, boys and girls. Yes, I know we are looking toward summer vacation time. However, sunscreen is one of the easiest and most important things that you can do in your daily routine year round. You may have heard it a thousand times, yet here it goes again. Drink plenty of water each day. Shots of espresso and coffee do not count, ladies and gentlemen! Sadly, wine and martinis do not either. These are all beverages that deplete water and dehydrates our skin which can lead to advanced aging! Another reason to drink up that tall glass of water is if cellulite is as much of an enemy of yours as it is to me. Drink those 8-10 glasses a day. In addition, some experts believe aerated drinks, including soda water, encourage bloating and cellulite, so please stick to pure water. Drinking water is needed to flush out toxins and replace the moisture we each loss daily. Looking for an increased cellulite buster? Look into an inch loss body wrap. Yes, these do really work. Have
your wrap done by a professional that knows what they are doing and ask for a consultation first. You should be given full instructions prior to your wrap. After a series of treatments, Lindie M. it is not unusual to Truex, River’s Edge drop 2 full clothes sizes. Day Spa With one style 541-791-2800 of wrap that our spa offers, cotton linens are soaked in a penetrating toxin cleansing aloe-herb solution, then wrapped around the client while warm in a non-compression, mummy style wrap. This is so relaxing and feels amazing! The client will relax in the wrap for around 45 heavenly minutes. The solution acts to tone and tighten surface skin. Penetrating herbs boosts cellular activity in deeper layers restoring elasticity and firmness to skin tissues. Therapeutic effects of the aroma are a pleasant added bonus. Many clients take a pleasant nap as the wrap encourages elimination of toxins through lymphatic cleansing. After a treatment, no shower is needed, as the solution continues to be absorbed, it feels and smells amazing. Drinking 3-4 liters of water during the 24 hours following treatment will Sunscreen continued on page 14

… But Theirs Is Greener! During summer months, for us June through August, our focus usually turns from preparation, weeding, trimming, etc. to enjoying the fruits and the beauty of our labors in the yard from the spring months. In warm weather we focus on relaxing, entertaining, having the backyard BBQ, and maybe cutting some fresh flowers for the table. What about a lawn that’s not the right shade of green? It may sound silly, but people really care- maybe you are one- about the neighborhood comparative color and perceived health of their lawn. Everyone that cares for a lawn would like it to be like the lawn shown on the front of the Scott’s fertilizer bag or the one on the cover of Home & Gardens magazine. The truth of the matter is there is more to a healthy, green lawn than meets the eye. Just because it’s green, doesn’t mean that it’s healthy. It may just mean that it’s got plenty to eat. A buzzword that has a meaning worthy of consideration is “sustainable.” With lawns, part of that consideration is deciding what shade of green you can live with. If you don’t really care about what happens below the surface (root health, soil health, water table contamination, pH balance, etc.) then you can stop reading here. But if you
want to know more about how to balance the desire for “green” with the health of your lawn and the environment, read on, and over the next couple of articles we’ll cover Word common mistakes From and best practices WILCO for building and maintaining a Brian healthy, sustainable lawn that you’ll be Coons, proud of. Wilco Most Common Mistakes: 1) Over-fertilization with fast acting (immediately available) nitrogen rich fertilizer is the number one mistake made in maintaining a lawn. The misconception is that if it’s not dark green, it doesn’t have enough nitrogen. While yellow or brownish lawn may be because of lack of nitrogen, there are other contributors like inefficient watering, lack of iron, or pest damage. Over fertilization diminishes root strength and depth as well as contributing to contamination of the water table. 2) Making fertilization the ONLY lawn care step other than mowing is the second most common mistake in lawn care. Fertilizing is only part of the process that should also include seasonal liming, thatching, aeration, and pest control as needed. These steps are both simple and key to a beautiful and sustainable green lawn.

Tiny Red Bugs Business Everywhere! Kids “I have hundreds of tiny red bugs on my windowsills, counters, walls and furniture. When I squash them, they leave nasty red stains behind”. Does this sound familiar? What are these tiny red bugs in my house you ask? They are Clover mites or commonly refered to as Strawberry Mites. They invade homes usually in early spring and late fall. These tiny red bugs measure a mere millimeter or less in size and can squeeze through the smallest of cracks around windows and cracks in foundations. They tend to invade homes and businesses in large numbers causing great concern to the homeowner. The good news is you’ve got nothing to worry about if a clover mite problem occurs. They don’t bite people or pets, they don’t carry diseases, and they can’t damage your furniture or food items. They do, however, leave a nasty red stain if you squash them. This isn’t blood, it’s the pigments in their body that give them their red color.

Clover mites feed primarily on grasses and clovers. They thrive on heavily fertilized lawns, so cut back on your fertilizing regimen if you’ve got a clover mite Sean problem. Why do clover mites invade homes? These tiny red bugs like to bask in warm, sunny places, so they crawl up the sides of buildings, usually on the south or west facing sides. Then, they’ll look for hiding places, and crawl into the first crevice they find. Often, this is around a window and they’ll end up inside your home. If you find the clover mites a nuisance and want to get rid of them, use a vacuum cleaner to suck them up, then dispose of the bag in an outdoor garbage can away from the house. They can and will crawl back out of the bag if left indoors. Then call Healthy Home Pest Control, LLC to help 541-570-0095.

Earth Who’s Packing Your Parachute?
Following is a true inspirational story that many have heard over the years. Recently, however, I have learned that there are many who haven’t. Captain Charles Plumb, a US Naval Academy graduate and jet fighter pilot in Vietnam in the 60’s had completed 75 combat missions when he was shot down. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands, spending six years in a Vietnamese prison. One day, while eating at a restaurant with his wife, a man came up and said, “Your Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “Because I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Charles Plumb, in surprise and gratitude, staggered to his feet and held out a very grateful hand of thanks. “I guess it worked.” “Yes sir, indeed it did”, Plumb said, “And I must tell you I’ve said a lot of prayers of thanks for your nimble fingers, but I never thought I’d have the opportunity to express my gratitude in person.”

Is a Good Night’s Sleep Possible?
Come prepared. Dress comfortably so you can test many mattresses. Bring your favorite pillow to replicate the proper sleeping position. Know the dimensions of your current set (floor to top of mattress). Know length and width as well. Know your room dimensions for possibly purchasing a larger set. You may decide to upgrade. Be smart in-store. Start with a comfort / technology test on good-quality mattresses. Determine your comfort preference first. Try a plush and firm innerspring mattress. Next try other technologies if you are curious to experience different feels, including memory foam and latex foam mattresses. At this point, do not worry about the details of what’s in the
Finds mattress. Know four basic comfort levels when you test. Remember: Comfort is different for everyone. So try several different comforts when you’re in the store. A good mattress should provide you with the right support at every comfort level. • Ultra Plush–a very soft-feeling surface • Plush–firmer than the ultra-plush, but less firm than cushion firm • Cushion Firm–firmer than an ultraplush, but softer than firm • Firm–the hardest of the comfort levels Found one you really like? Ask about the product’s features and benefits. Compare it to one of higher and lower price. Learn the difference between

firmness and the different prices. Buy the best mattress you can–if it passes your comfort test. What to ask. What’s inside the mattress that offers proper back and body support? What’s inside the mattress that minimizes tossing and turning? If it’s an innerspring, insist that the coils be twice-tempered. This helps the coils retain strength and prevent mattress sag. All mattresses must meet Federal Flame Retardancy guidelines. Purchase one that uses fabric and fiber for flame retardancy versus one treated with chemicals. Know the types of mattresses • Innerspring • Memory Foam • Latex Foam
you’re berry welcome!
Who can say that they get eight hours of sleep a night? It seems these days with our hectic schedules we are unable to do so. So, making the most of our sleep starts with having the right mattress. Whether you like a Gel memory foam, a Latex or an individually pocketed coil, we can help you choose the right mattress for you to get that perfect night’s sleep! The right bed begins with the right retailer. If you’ve had a positive experience somewhere, start there. Make sure they offer the quality and the selection you desire.
Know the difference in the coils inside an innerspring mattresses. Innersprings have many types of coils, which can cause confusion. Here’s what you need to know. Four things factor in to the support of an innerspring mattress. 1. Shape of the coil; 2. Thickness of the wire (The lower the number, the thicker the coil.); 3. Quantity of coils; 4. Tempering: Make sure the innerspring is twice-tempered to prevent sagging.

Sealy has optimized this formula of these elements to provide unique feel characteristics in our mattresses while providing you the support you need. Is Fostering Animals Right For You?
Cheer
If making a long-term commitment but interested in providing temporary care to animals in need? Then fostering might be right for you. We are always in need of loving foster care families, especially this time of year! Animals that are placed into SafeHaven Humane Society’s Foster Care Program are either pregnant, a mom with her litter, injured/sick, or too young and not fully vaccinated to stay at our shelter. Fostering a dog or cat in need of a home, love, and care is a timeconsuming effort, but it’s also one of the most rewarding ways to help homeless pets. Providing a foster home for animals in need, relieves the strain on our shelter and helps set the stage for successful adoptions. SafeHaven has discovered that dogs and cats fostered in a nurturing environment are less likely to be returned to the shelter after adoption;

Should I Feed My Cat Dry Food or Wet Food? By Eric Glaze Albany Animal Hospital
There is a lot of debate on this subject with pros and cons for each side. Dry food is relatively economical, easy to feed and doesn’t spoil easily. Cats that eat a dry food tend to have less significant issues with periodontal disease and have fewer “cavities” called resorptive lesions. So cost, convenience and dental health are major arguments in favor of dry food. Dry food is actually a valid option for a cat that self regulates its own intake by eating just what they need and not overdoing it. This is extremely rare, especially with indoor only cats who often will eat out of boredom just like we do. So measuring out dry food is really critical. Free feeding almost guarantees obesity. An average sized adult cat needs only about two hundred calories a day. The average cup of dry cat food contains around four hundred calories per cup. That means that your average cat only needs one quarter cup of food twice a day. The take home point is that if you choose to feed your cat dry food you must measure it out and adjust that amount up or down depending on whether they become too thin or more commonly too fat. Dry food has to have relatively high levels of carbohydrate just to be able to manufacture the pellet. And these pellets only have about five percent water. The result is a diet that is very unnatural for a cat and very calorically dense compared to canned food which is approximately seventyeight percent water and more closely resembles a cat’s natural diet both in terms of caloric density and nutrient profile. For example the proteins found in canned foods will more than likely have a higher percentage of animal based proteins rather than cheaper proteins derived from carbohydrates such as grains. Keep in mind that cats are obligate carnivores. This means they eat meat exclusively. Dogs on the other hand are omnivores and fare much better on a diet that is relatively high in vegetable matter. There are however high end dry formula foods available that are both grain free and

high in protein. They must still use vegetables like potato or pea to help with the pelletization process. The proteins in these higher end dry foods also tend to be more meat based. But beware the calorie content. In one brand the calorie content is six hundred calories per cup. Your average ten pound cat needs only two hundred calories a day. That amounts to feeding just one-third of a cup of dry food a day and that is a recipe for a cranky cat. There is a growing school of thought amongst veterinary feline specialists that canned food is in many more beneficial than dry. The incidence of obesity in cats is alarming. Cats like people develop type two diabetes when they are overweight and sedentary. I advise owners of diabetic cats to switch to a canned diet which helps us regulate their diabetes due to its higher protein/ lower carbohydrate content. The fewer calories in canned food help the cat to lose weight and some of these cats will end up going into diabetic remission. Canned food is also more beneficial for the urinary tract. Cats that have repeat episodes of urinary tract inflammation known as cystitis also do better on a canned diet. The extra water content in the canned diet helps to flush out the urinary tract. A canned diet also helps the kidneys which don’t have to work as hard to conserve water. Mice and other vermin are seventy-five percent water. Cats have to drink a lot more water to make up for the loss of water in their diet when fed dry food. And cats are not good at this. The thirst center of a cat has a higher set point than in a dog. Therefore the kidneys have to work harder to conserve water by concentrating the urine, which takes energy. The urine concentration of a cat fed dry food is about 50 percent higher than a dog fed dry food. The urine concentration of a cat fed wet food becomes roughly equal to that of a dog fed dry food. This means that over time the kidneys have to work less hard when the cat eats wet food. With that comes less oxidative damage resulting in kidneys that tend to last longer before burning out. This is an important point when one considers that the life limiting organ system in the majority of senior cats is the renal system.

Blindness
“In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” So says H.G. Wells in his immortal short story, “The Country of the Blind” (1904). However, Wells proves the opposite to be true: his protagonist’s descriptions of sight are met with disbelief among a community that has never seen. Two other books, the first written 45 years after Wells’ story, and the second written another 45 years after that look at the same proposition, but on a larger scale. The Day of the Triffids (1951) by John Wyndham is a relatively early postapocalyptic novel. The world is treated to a spectacular light show one night of origins unknown—though satellite weapons malfunction is postulated—and the next day everyone whose eyes were not protected is blind. Our hero, Bill, is one of the few people who did not go blind, and once he realizes what has happened, he initially thinks he will be a “king” among the blind. As it turns out, triffids, which are walking, poisonous, flesh-eating plants (they started as a Russian GMO) have been living amongst humans for a decade or two and take advantage of the humans’ blindness and begin hunting humans in droves. Wyndham is writing in the science fiction genre, and a scientific outlook

dominates. In this case, an unapologetic survival-of-the-fittest stance is eventually taken by most of the sighted, and the characters are Scott soon stripped of the morals of civilization. Givens, Half a century later, Browsers Portuguese author Bookstores, Jose Saramago wrote and fellow Blindness (1995) in reviewer, which a mysterious daughter, blindness spreads Amanda rapidly throughout Givens the entire world, affecting everyone, except one woman. Saramago is a Nobel-winning novelist and is more interested in the human condition than scientific explanations; however, he comes to many of the same conclusions that Wyndham does, though without the added pressure of flesh-eating plants; instead, it is governments (national or tribal) who are to be avoided. Both Wyndham and Saramago find some redemption in love, which is ironic for two reasons. First, H.G. Wells’ original story is about failed love—the protagonist does indeed fall in love, but is unable to “save” anyone, including himself. More ironic, though, is that the two novels deal with a world utterly abandoned by God. Saramago specifically uses the novel as an expression of his atheism, and the only redeeming love there is, is found in humanity itself. A grim prospect, perhaps, but after all, this is postapocalyptic fiction.

other problems. In other words, just because you don’t get a stomachache when you eat gluten, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t causing problems. In my clinical experience I have patients who have overcome symptoms of fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, skin infections and rashes, ADHD, joint and muscle pain, obesity, and other inflammatory conditions by cutting gluten from their diet. None of these people had celiac disease. One of my first and most dramatic experiences I have seen with getting off gluten was a runner who developed sudden knee and hip pain that was so severe she couldn’t run anymore. She had been to orthopedists, physical therapy and chiropractors with no success. Once she eliminated gluten from her diet she was completely pain free and able to run again. She has stayed this way ever since. For some reason people want to write this off as a “dietary fad” and ridicule those who are seeking the benefits of a gluten-free diet. This is odd since avoiding gluten has never actually hurt anybody. There are no documented reports of people being injured in any way from avoiding gluten. Some criticize the diet as putting people in danger of becoming nutritionally deficient. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Flour from wheat, rye, and barley are not abundant sources of nutrients or fiber when compared to fruits and vegetables, the cornerstone of a gluten free diet. Consider that avoiding gluten includes eliminating foods like doughnuts, bagels, cereal, cookies, pie, cake, and other foods that are not healthy. If you are interested in the benefits of a gluten free diet, there are many great resources available. I recommend reading the book Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, MD. Nadine Grzeskowiak, the “Gluten-free RN” is a great local resource (glutenfreern.com). I have also helped many people experience the value of a gluten-free diet whether they have celiac disease or not. New DVD Sets
Turner Classic Movies has been a real leader in compiling four-movie DVD sets honoring different film genres and stars and then offering them at one low price. For those of us who love the classic movies, this is a great way to start collecting your own library of great films to enjoy any time you want. I have always been a movie fan and started collecting when I was a very young boy. I had an old silent 16 millimeter projector that had belonged to my dad. On a trip back home from across country my grandparents brought me a present. It was a short, about 3 or 4 minutes, starring the popular comedy team of Abbott and Costello. I must have run that short piece of film until I about wore it out. Later, as a teenager, I collected 8 millimeter short reels of classic movies. Remember, there were no videotapes, video discs, or DVDs in those days so the short films were the only way you could enjoy movie history without going to a theater. Now, you can enjoy classic movies, usually including documentaries on the making of the movies, in your own home anytime you want. TCM, along with Warner Home Video, Universal Vault Series and other
major studios have now been releasing the classics for some time. However, leading the pack is TCM who has been gathering up classics in 4 movie sets and making them very affordable. New sets Rick just released honor Rogers stars such as Henry Movies Fonda, John Wayne, and DVDs Robert Mitchum, and World War Two era movies meant to boost morale on the home front. If you go to: www.tcm.com you will find hundreds upon hundreds of classic movies. Also, if you don’t use the internet, be sure not to overlook stores like our Points for Profit business partner BI-MART, where you can sort through racks of movie classics on DVD after turning up some real super buys. Thrift stores can also present you with used DVD classics. However, a word of caution: If you are buying a used DVD check out the disc before you purchase it. Fingerprint on the play side can usually be cleaned off with a soft dry cloth without affecting the DVD. Scratches or pock marks on the play side can stop your DVD player cold. There is a whole world of great movies to enjoy out there whether they were made a couple of months ago or 80 years ago.
