March Is Foster Child Month
Event graphic by Jerry Easter and Ann Bose, Art World.
At any given time, over 250 children are in Foster care homes in Linn County alone. As part of the National PTA’s Every Child In Focus campaign, The Greater Albany Council PTA is partnering with the Linn County Foster Parents Association to sponsor PJ’s and Pillows throughout the entire month of March. Every Child In Focus, which launched in September, 2013, was created by the National PTA, in order to strengthen family engagement in schools by celebrating the achievements and reporting the disparities within diverse populations, while sharing resources and advocacy tools to help school communities understand and address the unique needs of every child. Each month, a particular group is highlighted. March is the month of the Foster child. The entire Linn County community is asked to support this project by donating new pajamas and sleepwear (sizes adult XL down to infant) and standard bed pillows. Also needed are personal care items, from diapers for the little ones, to full-size products such as body washes, shampoos and deodorants, shaving supplies and teen skin care items for teenagers and young adults. Local volunteer quilters will be creating pillowcases and “care kit” bags for the children to keep. Collection bins will be located during March at Bi-Mart and Wal-Mart locations in Albany, Lebanon and Sweet Home. Donation receipts will be available at these sites for individuals who would like to take an IRA charitable tax credit on their 2015 taxes. Both the Greater Albany Council PTA and the Linn County Foster Parents Association are 501(c)(3) associations. Both organizations hope that this project will bring in to a clearer focus the ongoing needs of Foster Children and continue to support the families that provide this essential service. Additional information about PJ’s and Pillows can be obtained from ptaalbany@gmail.com.

Awards Night!
by Rick Rogers A huge crowd made up of mid-valley, non-profit participants in the Points for Profit program, as well as representatives of many of the participating businesses, filled the Linn county Fair and Expo Center for the annual awards dinner on the night of January 27. Awards certificates totaling thousands of dollars were handed out to the non-profit organizations that saved receipts from businesses in the program, as well as attending Points for Profit sponsored events and monthly dinners. Points for Profit brings local businesses and non-profits together to keep dollars spent locally building the mid-valley economy. People shopping at the participating business and services keep their receipts and turn them in to their favorite non-profits in the program. Those receipts translate in points for each dollar spent. Those receipts, along with participation points and other factors determine the amounts awarded during the annual January dinner. In 2014, the Points for Profit program kept over 6.7 million dollars in the local economy. All of the non-profits turning in receipts and

Awards were also presented to local participating businesses who were voted for by program participants. Winners were: Coy’s Cheesecakes for Home Based Business of the Year, Elmer’s Restaurant of Albany for Small Business of the Year, Rife’s Home Furnishings for Medium Business of the year and Bi-Mart for Large Business of the Year. Five individuals were also recognized for their many volunteer hours spent helping with the program. They are: Kelly Lancer, Michelle Wilkinson, Debbie Grenz and Kenny and Lorraine Harvuot. From the staff at InSpirit Marketing and High Points, congratulations to all. We are well on our way to another great Points for Profit year. See Spot. Run!
Recent visitors to Disneyland came home with an unexpected souvenir, measles! The outbreak that originated in California has now spread to 17 states. The disease was declared eliminated in the US in the year 2000, the result of a robust childhood immunization program. However, since 2008 the number of cases has been steadily increasing and 2015 is off to a recordbreaking start. Measles is a highly contagious disease spread by airborne droplets. The first symptoms (which appear 10-14 days after exposure) include: runny nose, red eyes, sore throat, and mild fever. The characteristic red rash appears in 3 to 4 days and the fever spikes to 104 degrees and higher. Measles infection can lead to pneumonia, brain damage, deafness, and death.
Approximately 28% of all cases will require hospitalization. We have a very effective measles vaccine, as evidenced by the elimination Pamela Becker, RpH of the disease in 2000, so why has this Rice’s devastating infection Pharmacy made a resurgence? & Gifts In 1998, an article appeared in The Lancet A “Pill Box (a British medical Pharmacy” journal), which claimed the measles vaccine caused colitis and autism. The fraudulent research paper was later discredited by several independent laboratories and The Lancet fully retracted the article. Unfortunately, before the article was retracted, a Hollywood actress used her celebrity to forward the notion that immunizing children would put them at risk for developing autism. Many parents took the advice of a movie star over that of their family physician and declined to immunize their children!

A Body in Motion
Earth
An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force. Although Newton’s Third Law of Motion may not seem to relate to our day to day lives, it is very applicable to the human body and the activities we do. Put simply, if we do not use our bodies to carry out a variety of physical and mental tasks, we may lose our ability to perform these activities over time. From scouring our brains for an answer on Jeopardy and stretching our hamstrings to hiking and playing with kids, the activities we love are most accessible to us if we do them routinely. Physical and mental activities also increase blood flow to many areas of the body and brain, allowing nutrientrich blood to support the demands put on the body by these activities. The motion of physical activity also helps circulate nutrients in and around the joints, allowing us to sustain physical activity more comfortably as we age. Our bone density also improves as a result of regular, impact-related physical activity. The skeleton - in addition to a frame and foundation for the body — is also a storage facility for minerals. The amount of minerals our skeleton can hold defines our

peak bone mass, which is reached in adolescence. Fortunately, we can help sustain this bone density and prevent osteoporosis later in life by staying in motion and focusing on activity that involves light Dr. Kevin to moderate impact Ross (e.g. walking, jogging, strength training). Physical activity doesn’t have to be an intense sport or gym routine. Walking, doing yard work and even preparing your food can be classified as mild to moderate physical activity. Activities as simple as a 20-30 minute daily walk, stretching muscles, doing calisthenics while watching a show, or working on a crossword puzzle all keep your body engaged and healthier.

Need Help with Prescription Drugs? Whatever your situation is, there is help to pay for your prescription drugs. Most individuals will have some type of health coverage. Most health insurance will have prescription drug coverage embedded in the plan, and the health insurance carrier will have a formulary to list drugs by name that will be covered in their plan. The health insurance carrier will then list the Tier level for each drug. The Tier levels will help you know what your drug will cost. With an employer group plan or an individual/family plan, the Tier levels will have copayments and that will be the amount you will pay. If you don’t find the drug name listed in the formulary, you can contact the insurance carrier to see if you can get the drug covered. Sometimes this will require an appeal. Sometimes it may require an exception. If you are uninsured, there is help to pay for your prescription drugs prescribed by your Primary Care Physician or Specialist. Pharmaceutical Companies have stated they will help individuals with the cost of their prescription drugs. If the drug is listed as a brand name drug, then the help can be obtained through the Pharmaceutical Company. If you have access to the internet, you can go to the internet and use

Your child’s daily routine should involve flossing and brushing at least twice a day; but if the word cavity keeps coming up during dental office visits, then dental sealants might be an option to consider. Who Should Get Sealants? Children and teenagers are ideal candidates due to the possibility of tooth decay in the crevices and grooves of the premolars and molars. Generally, children should have sealants placed on these teeth as soon as they erupt to protect them throughout the cavity-prone years. In rare cases, dental sealants may be placed on baby teeth when they exhibit extremely deep depressions or grooves.

What is a sealant? A sealant is a plastic material which is applied to the surface of both upper and lower back teeth to protect the tooth’s enamel. Like their name, they help “seal out” decay, and can protect teeth from cavities for up to 10 years. Your child’s sealants will be checked for chipping or wearing during routine dental visits.

How is a sealant applied? Sealants are easily applied in our office. The procedure is painless and the entire process only takes a few minutes per tooth. Here’s how it works: 1) One of our hygienists cleans your child’s teeth. 2) An acid solution is placed on the chewing surfaces, to help the sealant adhere fully to each tooth. 3) The teeth are rinsed with water and dried. 4) The sealant material is applied onto the tooth enamel, where the sealant will bond to the tooth and harden. Often, a special light is used to help harden the protective covering.

If The Walls Could Talk Competing For A Home Purchase Vs. Delay in An All-Cash Offer Communication Companions Travel
Recently, I arrived back at the office to find our internet and phones down. It was almost as if our world had stopped spinning. No calls, no emails. Can’t shop online. My life is toast! I know that for most of us, if we don’t have instant communication, we start to get anxious. Oh, we try to be cool about it, but a dead battery on a cell phone can transform even the most laid back person into a rattling wreck. The big question is: how do we return to the good old days of writing a letter and patiently waiting days for a response? The answer is: we don’t, we can’t, and we won’t. This electronic dependency has become a monumental epidemic in our society. I have been known to have a lousy sense of direction, but with my smart phone, I can navigate even the deepest jungles of the world and

Depending on location and market dynamics, cash buyers (those not requiring a mortgage) currently account for a third of all home purchases – according to Core Logic, a firm that tracks real estate trends. As a buyer who needs a mortgage to purchase a home, it will be tough for you to compete against an all-cash offer, particularly in a market where multiple offers abound. From a seller’s perspective, an all-cash offer eliminates both hassle and risk, as do offers without appraisal or financial conditions, which, in a hot real estate market, can also reduce your chances of success. There are, however, some ways to make your offer more competitive. For example: • Try to avoid multiple offer situations. • Ask your agent to help you find “off-market” properties. • Consider waiving the financing

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, securing a pre-underwriting letter may make your offer more attractive. Unlike a pre-approval letter, this one has teeth. It contains deep income and asset documentation, which sellers like to see, as it means you are a serious buyer. Plus, it may move you through the approval process more quickly. Many cash buyers are overly confident and therefore submit unrealistic, low-ball offers. So, while cash is worth a 2 percent to 3 percent discount, sellers annoyed by the low bid might just accept yours instead. If you have questions, give us a call at Cadwell Realty Group: 541-791-7946.

Owner Kasey Reinhart welcomes you to Monkey Fridays in downtown Albany.
New Points Partner: Monkey Fridays By Rick Rogers When you want homemade soup, a delicious deli style sandwich and a treat for dessert, we recommend our newest Points for Profit business partner Monkey Fridays in the Two Rivers Market located at Second and Broadalbin in downtown Albany. Kasey and Steve Reinhart opened the doors to their fun new eating establishment late last year in the old Wine Depot location. Kasey, a former office assistant at Keller Williams Realty, decided to name their business Monkey Fridays because on Fridays when she was looking forward to a fun weekend, she would wear monkey earrings, a monkey watch and a monkey T-shirt to work. Kasey says besides their specialty soups and salads, their most popular sandwich is The “Funky Monkey Melt” consisting of bacon, tomato, avocado and pepper jack cheese grilled on sourdough bread. Their most popular deserts include their oatmeal fudge bar and their triple chocolate brownies with ganache. Of course, if you just want a scoop or two of good ol’ ice cream, you can get that too. A Muse on Music
Going
It was an Easter Sunday morning and I was sat in church. The church was packed, hundreds had come out and as I sat there I listened to the 10 piece brass band, 20 bell ringers and 50 choir members giving “it their all”. I had many thoughts that morning. I thought of those I loved far away on this Easter morning. I thought how Easter week was a reflection of the journey of our lives from the triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the pain of the cross and the soaring sensation of the resurrection. But one other thing stuck out for me that morning and it was the nature of music. As I sat and listened to those talented musicians it made me realize that music is filled with LIFE. I’d always thought that life should be filled with music but no here I was listening and feeling the pulsation of the heart of music.

So what are we meant to do with music? Surely we are to let its life transfer to our life. So this week you might like to test what effect music will have on you. Sometimes music is associated with life Jonathan events. Whenever Booth I hear Chariots of Fire it makes me think of my 1,000 mile bicycle ride from the South of England to the North of Scotland (affectionately called the End 2 End). Riverdance makes my feet tap and brings me more life and energy and reminds me of happy times in Ireland. And so as we sung “And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up” on that Easter morning it made me cry and think of mission and how important it is for faith to be living and vital in the heart of each of us. So, put the kettle on and play some music! Feel its life and let its life fill you today!

The Coming of the Fairies
Reviews
by Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the great detective, Sherlock Holmes, was deeply interested in spiritualism, which was gaining favor in England during his lifetime. When word reached him about some photographs of fairies taken by two girls, he instantly realized this could be the greatest evidence ever found for the existence of otherworldly beings. He and a friend launched an extensive investigation into these photographs, and eventually their findings were published in the book, The Coming of the Fairies (1920). The book is a fascinating read. Sherlock Holmes was one of the great practitioners of inductive reasoning. You may remember from high school that deduction is moving from a theory to a specific conclusion (such as “All detectives are good guys. Sherlock Holmes is a detective. Therefore, Sherlock Holmes is a good guy.”), whereas induction is moving from a specific event to a larger conclusion (“Sherlock Holmes is a good guy. Sherlock Holmes is a detective. Therefore, all detectives are good guys.”) From these two examples, you can tell that induction is a little more on the iffy side. However, it makes for great fiction when Holmes is able to make fantastic conclusions based on the tiniest of details.
Just because it worked in his stories, however, doesn’t mean that it was the right sort of logic to use when investigating the fairy photographs. Reading the book is Scott almost sad, because we Givens, know that the fairies Browsers Bookstores, are faked, yet Doyle and his friend are so and fellow completely duped that reviewer, every detail about the daughter, photographs and their Amanda origin is examined and Givens found to be in support of the existence of fairies. These fairies, known as the Cottingley Fairies, never reached the level of popularity of other supernatural sightings, such as Loch Ness or UFOs, and in the 1970s, someone was looking through an old book called Princess Mary’s Gift Book, and—lo and behold—the Cottingley Fairies were right there! Yes, the girls had simply cut out the fairies from one of the illustrations in the book, and propped them up for the photographs! The book now has some collector value because of this connection, and the book is often found with the illustration page cut out. The ultimate irony? The book features a short story by none other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself. So, if anyone shows you photos of leprechauns this St. Patrick’s Day, you might want to be a little skeptical, and maybe check a few old books of fairy tales to make sure all the pictures are there!
Mysterious March
March is an interesting month. Half of it is in winter, and the other half is in spring. It is the perfect month to cozy up to some good old mystery movies. If you follow my movie columns, you know that I am big on boxed sets, and there is one out there that is a real gem and fits right in with this month’s theme. The set is called “Inner Sanctum Mysteries,” and features six movies made by Universal Pictures between 1943 and 1945. The “Inner Sanctum Mysteries” were a series of popular books published by Simon and Schuster which led to a great series of weekly radio shows that I remember fondly growing up. The radio shows always started with the sound of a creaking door opening, followed by a creepy voice announcing tonight’s broadcast full of murder and mayhem. The books and radio show were so popular, they spawned the six-movie series. Universal wisely put their most popular horror star of the time, Lon Chaney (Jr.), as the lead character in each film.
Complete Business Solutions
Chaney had already made a name for himself as the son of famed silent film star Lon Chaney (Sr.), the man of a thousand faces, as well as being featured as the Wolfman Rick in a number of Rogers Universal’s early Movies 40’s movies. and DVDs Included in this set are, “Calling Dr. Death,” “Dead Man’s Eyes,” “Weird Woman,” “The Frozen Ghost,” “Strange Confession,” and “Pillow Of Death.” All but the final film in the series starts out with the creaking door revealing a disembodied head in a crystal ball narrating the intro to each movie, just like the radio program. This is a quality boxed set with great box graphics and pristine prints of each of the six films. My personal favorites in the set are “Calling Dr. Death,” “Weird Woman,” and “Pillow Of Death.” This set has been out for a couple of years, so you will probably need to order it online from Amazon or other internet sources. As the man behind the creaking door said at the end of each Inner Sanctum broadcast, “PLEASANT DREAMS, EVERYONE!”

Health A Smart Approach When people think of pest control programs, they tend to think of harmful chemicals being sprayed throughout their home, and what effects this may have on their family, their pets and the environment. Utilizing an excessive amount of chemicals around your home should be a thing of the past. Healthy Home Pest control, LLC takes the IPM, Integrated Pest Management approach (or what we like to refer to as Intelligent Pest Management) in solving pest problems. It is important to understand what Integrated Pest Management really means. By definition, “IPM is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.” So what that really means is that IPM is not one single method of controlling pests, it is a series of observations, decisions and controls for a comprehensive approach that results in the best outcome. In order to effectively
control a pest, we have to begin by looking at a few important factors: First, are there good indicators that pest control action must be taken? For instance, depending Sean on the environment in which it is Meiner observed, seeing a Healthy single ant does not Home Pest always mean control Control, LLC is needed. However, (541) 570-0095 under many circumstances, a large pest population or environmental conditions indicate that pest control action must be taken. Second and highly critical is proper identification of the pest so that good, sound decisions can be made. Understading the life-cycle and habits of pests (and wildlife) is vital to solving a problem. Proper identification lowers the possibility that pesticides will be used when they are not really needed or that the wrong kind of pesticide will be used. Another effective control method that is used in IPM is prevention, For instance, preventing pests such as rats or raccoons from entering an indoor space by identifying and fixing entry points is a generally cost-effective and a low risk approach. The bottom line on smart pest control is to use an educated approach by utilizing ALL appropriate options in controlling pests. For pest concerns or questions call for a free Healthy Home Inspection.

Spring Gardening
Business
Now that spring is starting to peep through the fog, it’s a great time to get out and check off those early projects to prepare for the garden season. Here’s what you can look to do this month: Slug Patrol- As soon as bulbs begin to poke through soil, slugs start feeding. To get a jump on controlling these voracious chewers, put out slug bait when you see bulb shoots. Slugs are most active during mild, rainy weather. You’ll likely spot three types of slugs. Spray for Pests & Diseases- Break out the sprayer late this month to treat trees and shrubs typically attacked by scale. Spray horticultural oil, which also helps control mites. Don’t spray blue spruce trees. Start Planting- Wait to dig until after soil has warmed and isn’t too wet. • Get cole crops into the ground: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale. Look for seedlings at Wilco Garden Centers. • Tuck bare-root asparagus and rhubarb, as well as onion sets and potatoes, into soil (Wilco will have specials on Cole Crop veggies and Potatoes in March). • Sow seeds of leafy salad favorites (lettuce, spinach) and onion-family plants (leeks, onions, shallots). Beets, carrots, and radishes can also be

Prune Roses, Shrubs & Clematis• Roses: Early in the month, remove old, thin, and unproductive rose canes. Cut back bush roses to 12-18 inches tall and shrub roses to 3 feet. Thin climbing roses if canes are thick and tangled. • Shrubs: Wait to prune spring-flowering shrubs after blossoms fade. It’s OK to remove dead or storm-damaged branches prior to bloom; they may detract from the show. • Clematis: Scratch fertilizer into soil around the base of vines and water in. Refresh mulch around vines. Wait to prune until all danger of a hard frost has passed. In all areas, prune springblooming clematis immediately after flowering.

Phone Scams Continue Game to be Serious Threat Taste
Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain near the top of the annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams for the 2015 filing season, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent months as scam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revocation and other things. The IRS reminds taxpayers to guard against all sorts of con games that arise during any filing season. “If someone calls unexpectedly claiming to be from the IRS with aggressive threats if you don’t pay immediately, it’s a scam artist calling,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “The first IRS contact with taxpayers is usually through the mail. Taxpayers have rights, and this is not how we do business.” The Dirty Dozen is compiled annually by the IRS and lists a variety of common scams taxpayers may encounter any time during the year. Many of these con games peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns or hire someone to do so. This year, for the first time, the IRS will issue the individual Dirty Dozen scams one at a time during the next 12 business days to raise consumer awareness. Phone scams top the list this year because it has been a persistent and pervasive problem for many taxpayers for many months. Scammers are able to alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers. They often leave “urgent” callback requests. They prey on the most
Do you know what employers want in a new employee so much that they often favor it above education and experience? In a recent survey, 48% of respondents said the most difficult and desirable trait to find in potential hires is a strong work ethic. So why is it so hard to find? BY Cheryl Eric Chester is an author Vaun, and speaker who is an expert Complete in employee engagement Business and workplace culture. In a Solutions recent interview, he went to 541.981.9566 the heart of the matter: “ask yourself a question. What are you doing—not to motivate your employees—but what are you doing to demotivate them? Try to be grateful for the skill sets they have because many of those skills come in handy for you. Today’s job-seekers don’t show up with work ethic in their pockets alongside the keys to the car they worked two jobs to earn, grateful for any wage offered and happy to do any dirty job that needs doing. If that’s your expectation and you view modern applicants through that lens, you’ll continue to seek work ethic in vain.” “Employers want positive, enthusiastic people (Positive Attitude) who show up on time (Reliability), are dressed and properly prepared (Professionalism), who go out of their way to add value/do more than required (Initiative), play by the rules (Respect), are honest (Integrity), and give cheerful, friendly service (Gratitude). Those seven terms are the fundamental core values that every employer, at every level from parttime mail clerk to owner or CEO, tell me are non-negotiable.” I am passionate about employee retention and a positive workplace environment. I not only believe, but have seen in action, a happy employee is a productive employee. In a workplace that embraces these principles, not only will employees with a strong work ethic flourish, success for the business will as well. Skin Tightening Home and Contouring Cents
Each week I hear from a number of repeated skin concerns and one that is most popular is skin sagging and the desire to tighten skin and contouring. Yes there is hope! In fact a number of options are available. As an introduction I would like to share a couple of thoughts addressing lifting and tightening of the skin. Multiple devices are available and believed to result in a microinflammatory process that promotes new collagen. By manipulating skin cooling, Radio frequency can also be used for heating and reduction of fat. Currently, the most common uses of RF-based devices are to noninvasively manage and treat skin tightening of lax skin (including sagging jowls, abdomen, thighs, and arms), as well as wrinkle reduction, cellulite improvement, and body contouring. Consumer demand for noninvasive methods for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, body contouring, and cellulite reduction is continuously growing. As less time for recovery means less time lost from work, clients are seeking noninvasive cost-effective procedures requiring minimal downtime to diminish skin laxity and smooth irregular body contours. Sagging jowls are the manifestation of loss in elasticity with the resulting skin drooping, and many patients

request noninvasive methods to contract or tighten the skin. These noninvasive methods include lasers, both nonablative fractional and focused ultrasound, and radio frequency. Use of RF is typically Lindie M. reserved for deeper Truex, skin heating without River’s Edge causing ablation of Day Spa the epidermis and 541-791-2800 dermis. These can be used not only to induce contraction of skin but also, in certain situations, for reduction of fat. Competitive technologies include vacuum massage, infrared laser technologies, high-frequency focused ultrasound, cavitation frequency ultrasound, RF energy, and various hybrid energy devices combining some or all of the above. Many devices use a combination of heat and cooling to noninvasively deliver RF energy to specific depths in tissue, which produces a predictable response, notably collagen remodeling, to achieve desired cosmetic results for wrinkle reduction, tissue tightening, and body contouring. These methods can play an important role in the treatment of sagging jowls and mild body contouring. It is a safe technology, which is continually being made safer. Please contact me today to schedule your consult and learn more about what options may be a good fit for you.

sharing private information. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may know a lot about you. The IRS reminds people that they can know pretty easily when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a telltale sign of a scam. The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card. • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking
for money, here’s what you should do: • If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1-800829-1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue. • If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the TIGTA at 1-800-366-4484 or at www.tigta.gov. • If you’ve been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments of your complaint. Remember, too, the IRS does not use email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue involving bills or refunds. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box. Additional information about tax scams is available on IRS social media sites, including YouTube http://www.youtube. com/irsvideos and Tumblr http://internalrevenueservice.tumblr.com, where people can search “scam” to find all the scamrelated posts.

Dental Disease
Cheer
February was national pet dental month, and so I thought I would write a short article highlighting some of the important facts regarding at-home dental care and dental disease in our pets. Approximately eighty-five percent or our patients have some degree of periodontal disease by the age of three. The process starts with the formation of plaque, which is a film of bacteria and saliva that forms on the enamel of teeth. If the film sets for long enough on the tooth, it begins to react with minerals naturally found in our saliva and form rock hard tartar. As tartar forms, oxygen levels drop near the surface of the tooth and this favors the growth of anaerobic bacteria that are more harmful. The bacteria and tartar begin to move under the gum line causing gingivitis. This becomes evident as swelling and reddening along the gum line with bleeding often observed with just minor mechanical irritation. Seeing blood more frequently on chew toys can be a clue to the onset of periodontal disease in dogs. Once bacteria moves under gums, they start to break down the ligaments and alveolar bone that hold the teeth in their sockets. Seventy percent of a tooth lives under the gum line. As this degradation takes place, toxins and bacteria can leach into the blood and cause inflammation in the kidneys as well as damage to the valves of the heart. Feeding dry kibble helps reduce the rate of plaque formation but is in no way a substitute for brushing. Imagine if we gave up brushing our own teeth in favor or only eating crunchy food. Brushing is the ideal way to get rid of plaque before it has a chance to mineralize into tartar and eventually move under the gums. This takes time and training. Ideally, twice a day is best, but I can definitely tell the difference between a dog that has its teeth brushed every other day and a dog that doesn’t get its teeth brushed

at all. It’s easier to start training a young dog to accept a toothbrush. Use a brush with extra soft bristles. The first step is just getting them used to having their mouths manipulated. Gently using your finger or a piece of gauze to wipe the teeth in the same manner you will be using the toothbrush. After a couple of weeks of doing this daily to twice daily, you should introduce the toothbrush. After your dog accepts the toothbrush, you can introduce pet friendly toothpaste. Pet toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors and some have enzymes that help kill bacteria. Do not use toothpaste intended for people because the fluoride will make them ill. When brushing, try to focus on the outside of the upper teeth. Use elliptical motions angled at forty five degrees toward the gums. Try to get in 10 to 15 tight elliptical motions in before moving to the next area. Do not worry about brushing the insides of the teeth. Just focus on the outsides. If your pet refuses to accept a brush due to sensitive gums, there are dental wipes that can be used to help remove plaque. If your dog already has moderate to severe periodontal disease, then a full cleaning by a veterinarian will be necessary to give you a clean surface to start with. Never attempt to clean a dogs teeth during the first week after a veterinary cleaning, as gums are often too tender during this time. Adjunctive methods of keeping teeth clean should be used in addition to brushing teeth. Dental chews are available to help “brush” the plaque off teeth. When shopping for dental treats, look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of approval. Water additives like AquaDent can be used in drinking bowls to help reduce the numbers of plaque causing bacteria. There are also special prescription dental diets that can dramatically reduce plaque formation. If you have any question whether or not your pet has dental disease and whether or not certain products are safe and effective, please talk to your regular veterinarian.

Adopting a pet is one of the most rewarding things you can do! From emotional benefits to physical benefits, pets can impact our lives in so many incredible ways. And there are many benefits when you choose to adopt a pet. Shelter pets are in desperate need of a new beginning! It is so rewarding to help a deserving animal by giving them a loving home, and after living in a shelter, your new pet will be so grateful for the wonderful life you’re going to give him. But that’s not all—your adoption fee will benefit other animals too, and supports shelter’s work in your community. Each year, SafeHaven Humane Society finds home for approximately 1,900 pets. And because we don’t want these animals to experience homelessness again, we take our responsibility in evaluating potential new homes seriously. We also want you to be happy with the companion you choose and we want to see each of the animals we care for go to loving homes! The right fit is important. To help you find an ideal animal companion, we need to get to know you: your living situation, your experience with companion animals and your expectations for assuming the responsibility for a new companion.

New Beginnings: Adopting a Furry Friend
• Birthday parties • School events • Family reunions • Team parties • Fundraisers • And much more
We are an indoor bounce house facility, with a padded infant area and awesome private party room with karaoke! We offer group discounts for four or more children. We also offer special rates for schools, churches, and not-for profit organizations. We also offer a 10 visit membership for $55. It is transferable and does not expire.
The whole family should be involved in the decision-making process, and it may require several visits to find the right friend for you. To ensure the pet is compatible with everyone, all family members should interact with the animal before the adoption is finalized. If you have other pets already in your home, we welcome introductory visits at our facility to see how your pet will interact with one you’d like to adopt. When you select your new furry friend, we will ask you to review our adoption policies and fill out and sign an adoption agreement and application, including references. All of our pets are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchipped. A free veterinary exam and one month of Shelter Care Pet Insurance are both included as part of the adoption fee. If you adopt a dog, we offer a variety of behavioral and training classes to help you and your new canine friend get off on the right foot, or paw. Ready to adopt? You can view all of our adoptable animals online at safehavenhumane.org or visit us in person at 32220 Old Hwy 34 in Tangent. We are open weekends and Mondays from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m.
