will go toward the community effort to build a new and larger shelter on Highway 34 near Tangent. Over one-hundred local businesses participate in the mid-valley Points for Profit Program. Awards were also presented to businesses chosen by those participating non-profit members and others interested in the program. “Large Business of the Year” went to Wilco Farm Stores in Tangent, while Creative Crafts and Frames of Corvallis was named as “Small Business of the Year” and Kathy Goss with Pampered Chef received “Home-Based Business of the Year”. Special Volunteer of the Year awards were presented to Kelly Lancer of Lebanon, Lorraine Anderson, Michelle Wilkinson and Kenny Harvuot of Albany for their outstanding volunteer efforts throughout the year. The delicious special awards night dinner of Prime Rib and all the trimmings was prepared by Points for Profit business partner Jacopetti’s Catering of Albany. The night was capped by a huge silent auction which raised several hundred dollars for distribution to nonprofits next year. A big highlight of the night was an announcement by InSpirit Marketing President, Lauralee Beck: When all the receipts for last year were counted, the Points for Profit program was responsible for pumping over 6-million dollars back to Points for Profit businesses, in our local economy during 2012! On the evening of January 28, nearly 200 people gathered in the conference rooms at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany for the 10th Annual Points for Profit awards banquet. At the banquet, cash awards were presented to 27 mid-valley nonprofit organizations. Awards were based upon their shopping receipts from local businesses participating in the program, along with points earned by attending monthly dinners, on location events, and other promotional events. The top cash award of $5,000 was presented for first place, in points accumulated, to Oregon Women for Agriculture. The group announced it would use the money to promote agriculture in the mid-valley and help out local schools with their agricultural programs. Second place was claimed by Teen Challenge, a Christian based program aimed at helping men with drug problems. They were presented with a $3,500 award and will use the money to finish a home in Lebanon. They are refurbishing a house to use as a men’s dormitory. A third place award of $2,500 was presented to the Saint Edwards Youth Group of Lebanon, who uses the money to support group activities affecting the community. Fourth place, an award totaling $1,200, went to the Lebanon High School Drama Club. It will be used by the students to help with school plays and other activities sponsored by the group. Rounding out the top five wards was fifth place, a $1,000 award, presented to SafeHaven Humane Society A group of young choir members perform for the banquet animal shelter. That money crowd.

I have to admit, though I love the summer months, that March is far and away my favorite month in the whole calendar year. May through September is one long idyll of warmth and sunshine. October is the golden harvest home. November is marginal, but it does have Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving, and December keeps you stepping with holiday happenings. Then, January drops in like a heavy, wet, cold blanket and February, though mercifully short, is not much better. Somehow the grayness gets grayer, the fogs, foggier, and the damp, damper. In fact the overwhelming grayness got to me this year and I was not just miserable, I was “mizzable”. That term was coined by a black-sheep relation, but it’s the truth. It’s bad enough to be miserable, but “mizzable” is a thousand times worse! If hibernation was humanly possible, this would be the time to do it. I’d like to pull the blankies over my head and grab several warming cats and hide out! So I started my spring cleaning earlyhalfway through February. At least my house will be ready for nicer weather. Beautiful March comes upon us with noticeably longer days! We pass the vernal equinox! Flowers wake up! Spring has sprung! Sure, it rains, but somehow the rain doesn’t seem as wet as it does in the January doldrums, and there is a renewed sense of hope. Easter happens and the world gets a major lift spiritually and physically, and the universe feels a great sense of renewal. Then with a contented sigh, March fades happily into auspicious April! Happy Spring!

March is a transitional month. While the cold and flu viruses of winter are still circulating, the springtime allergies begin to emerge. Patients often seek out over-thecounter (OTC) products for relief of their symptoms. Many of the popular OTC cold and allergy preparations contain multiple ingredients. It is easy to accidentally double dose on a particular ingredient if one is using more than one product. There are a few entities that appear in many different OTC products, so they warrant discussion. Antihistamines are used to treat allergies and dry up head congestion. There are two types of antihistamines: those that cause drowsiness and those that do not. The non-drowsy antihistamines are usually found in single-ingredient products labeled to treat allergies. They include Zyrtec (cetirizine), Claritin (loratadine), and Allegra (fexofenadine). Conversely, the antihistamines that cause drowsiness are found in a broad array of OTC preparations including, allergy remedies, multi-symptom cold remedies, and sleep aids. Popular examples of this type of antihistamine are: ChlorTrimeton (chlorpheniramine), and Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Who among us doesn’t want to get a good night’s sleep when battling a nasty cold virus? Taking an OTC cold remedy in conjunction with an OTC sleep aid, will likely result in a double dose of antihistamine. The overdose will compound the antihistamine side effects

which include disorientation, difficulty urinating, dry mouth/eyes, and constipation. Analgesics are another class of drugs that are found in a wide variety of Pamela OTC medications. Becker, RpH Bayer/Ecotrin (aspirin), Motrin/ Rice’s Advil (ibuprofen), Pharmacy and Tylenol & Gifts (acetaminophen) are all commonly A “Pill Box occurring analgesics. Pharmacy” These ingredients are added to cold formulas to reduce fever, and treat head and body aches. However, they are also found in OTC arthritis treatments and pain relievers. It is likely that someone with arthritis might one day need relief from cold or flu symptoms. This person is at risk for accidentally taking too much of an analgesic. Double-dosing may have serious consequences, depending on the duration. Taking an excessive amount of an analgesic may result in impaired blood-clotting, liver toxicity, or stomach ulceration, depending on the agent. Although many medications are available for purchase over-the-counter, it is important to respect that these are not harmless agents. If there is any question as to whether the OTC items you are considering are compatible with each other, a prescription regimen, or an existing health condition; be sure to seek the advice of a pharmacist. For over fifty years the pharmacists at Rice’s Pharmacy have been committed to giving our customers a full- service experience. We look forward to helping you with all your medication needs.

For the past couple of weeks I have been asking everybody these two questions: 1) If you could get a chiropractic adjustment every week (all circumstances aside) would you want one? 2) If “No” then why not? But if “Yes” then what keeps you from doing this now? The results of this survey won’t surprise you. Most people said “Yes!” The things holding people back from being doing this were cost and convenience. I totally understand. Even at our discounted “Time of Service” rate that would cost $180 a month and some of you have to find a sitter to watch your kids while you take time to get adjusted. There was a common response that made me a little sad. Some of you said something like, “My insurance says I’m only allowed to get adjusted ____ times a year.” WHAT?!? Since when does insurance dictate what you can and can’t do for your health? Most chiropractors get adjusted at least once a week. We adjust our families and staff that often too. We do it because it helps us feel and live great. This type of care is called elective care, maintenance care or wellness care. We aren’t treating problems; we are improving function and promoting well-being.

When I started asking people how much they would pay for access to an adjustment once a week most people said they would pay $75-100 per month. I can do better than that. I’m excited to announce the Body of Dr. Jason Health Booster Club. Young Here is how it works. First, become a patient at Body of Health. This gives us a chance to do a thorough history and exam and discuss your health goals. Once we determine you are a good candidate for this type of care you can become a Booster Club member. Booster Club members can receive up to 4 wellness adjustments for just $59 per month. That’s it. You don’t even need an appointment. We have times set aside each day for Booster Club members. You walk-in, sign-in, we have a brief discussion about how you are doing, you get adjusted and then we see you next week (if that’s when you choose to come in next). Like I mentioned before, I adjust my whole family every week. Your family can have this same benefit also. $118 (the price of two memberships) covers the entire family (Mom, Dad and the kids). So you don’t have to find somebody to watch the kids, just bring them to get adjusted too!

You may have asked yourself this question. And yes there are some outpatient prescription drugs that may be covered under Medicare Part B. These may include, but are not limited to, the following types of drugs. • Some antigens: If they are prepared by a doctor and administered by a properly instructed person (who could be the patient) under doctor supervision. • Osteoporosis Drugs: Injectable osteoporosis drugs for some women. • Erythropoietin (Epoetin Alfa or Epogen*): By injection if you have end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring either dialysis or transplantation) and need this drug to treat anemia. • Hemophilia Clotting Factors: Selfadministered clotting factors if you have hemophilia. • Injectable Drugs: Must injectable drugs administered incident to a physician’s service.

When people talk about getting their personal finances in order, they usually try to find the easy way to reduce debt and increase savings. There are a number of steps that you can take that are relatively painfree and low-cost that will help get you on your way to a better financial position, but this is taking the long term approach. Little steps over a long period of time will add up to big amounts, but it’s not the only way to achieve financial freedom. Another option is to take the hard route. Instead of making small changes, make big changes which can have a large impact. The advantage is that you can put a huge dent into any debt you might have or supercharge your saving rate, with large increases over a short period of time. Here are 10 hard ways to get your finances in order. 10 Downsize your house. Instead of buying the biggest house you can afford, live in the smallest house you can find. Sell your current house and buy one that is half the size or even smaller. Challenge yourself to find the smallest space that you can stand to live in. Take a chapter out of your college days and think onebedroom or studio apartment (or a lot of roommates). Though it’s not easy to live small, your finances will be healthy and well in no time. 9 Save 50%+ of your income. Saving 10% of your income is the common

Think about this for a second: 30 years ago you didn’t have iPods, cell phones, computers, DVD players and a lot of the other gadgets that are deemed “essential” today. Throw in the big, flat screen TV and get rid of them all. You can get your news from a newspaper at your local library, where you can also check email or use the computer. Not only will you save hundreds a month on subscription costs, you’ll save thousands of dollars a year on hardware costs. 7 Eliminate your car. The truth is that you don’t really need your car. Yes, it’s a lot more convenient than not having one, but it’s possible to get by without one. You will have to adjust your schedule around others that do have cars and learn to love public transportation. On the occasions when you do need a car, renting one is still possible. While you may be tempted to hit the local sale, carefully considering the interior furniture you select is much more important. Here’s how to do it better. Interior furniture is any type of furniture that you place throughout your home. This furniture has several things that you should consider. First of all, it is designed to keep the look and the feel of your home the way that you want it. It should reflect the decorating style that your prefer. It should also be as functional as you need it to be. That may mean in size and in use. Finally, the interior furniture that you select should be of the highest quality so that you get long lasting beauty that is well worth the investment. Is that sales ad going to give that to you? Let’s Talk Style. The first thing to consider about the interior furniture that you select for your living room, kitchen, or your bedroom should be that of the style it offers. If you will be creating a room in which you need to feel comfortable, you need to look for the types of styles that make you feel that way. Just walk through a furniture department store, but do not look so much at the furniture as you do the decorating styles. Do you like a shabby chic look? Or, are you looking for a formal, traditional look? Selecting the style that fits your needs will provide you with the best possible furniture. Next, consider the function of the piece. The interior furniture needs to function in several ways. It should fit well within the

room that you want to place it in, in the matter of size. Crowding a room with too much makes it overwhelming. Second, it needs to provide for enough seating for your family. If you have children, look for furniture that is stain guarded and easy to take care of as well. The function of the pieces of furniture should also help to enhance the items such as wall coverings, carpeting and other elements that you already have, or you’ll need to replace these. Finally, consider the quality of the interior furniture that you place within your home. The higher the quality of the item, the better the piece is for an investment. Look at how the product is put together, nails won’t cut it. Look for durability, stain protection and how authentic the piece is to the real thing. When you put all of these elements together, you will wind up having the best type of product and interior furniture available. Taking a bit more time to select it will make sure that it fits well within your reach. For more detail call Rife’s Home Furniture today at 541-758-2020. No, it’s not a tiny gymnast, but it is the way to customize heating or airconditioning to any indoor space. Ductless mini-split systems are a great solution to a wide variety of installation challenges, giving contractors the ability to put air conditioning (and heat with heat pump models) in locations that previously seemed impossible. They’re ideal when installing ductwork is difficult, prohibitively expensive, or simply impractical. Both residential and commercial structures, new construction and existing buildings are candidates for mini-splits. Basically a mini-split does away with the need for ductwork. Like a regular split system A/C or heat pump, the condenser is located outdoors; one or more air handlers are placed indoors. The two are connected by electrical and refrigerant lines that run through a small hole in an exterior wall, generally 3” in diameter or less. In addition to eliminating the need for ducting, one of the other big advantages to mini-split systems is true zone control. The air handler is dedicated to the room being conditioned and is controlled by a wireless remote. That room can be kept at a temperature and humidity level different from the rest of the house or building. Multi-zone systems for two or three rooms (or one large space) feature a single condenser that handles two or

three air handlers. Each air handler is independently controlled, with its own remote and electronics-based climate controls to regulate temperature and humidity levels, as well as airflow. Units in a bedroom and a home office, for instance, can be programmed for different hours of operation with the 24-hour timer, or two classrooms situated side by side can be set at different temperatures. Mini-split systems have the flexibility to fit virtually anywhere and with SEER ratings up to 19.1, they’re also economical to operate. Mini-splitter systems are ideal for Historic homes (the aesthetics of the exterior are maintained), in homes with hydronic heat, in residential additions such as a sunroom or bedroom, vacation homes and cabins, schools (individual classroom control), church sanctuaries and fellowship halls, nursing homes and hospitals, restaurants, remote offices such as those inside a warehouse or factory, utility transfer stations, computer rooms (temperature/humidity can be different than the rest of the building), ATMs and office lobbies. In short, anywhere it’s important or desirable to individualize temperature zones. bills and insurance costs. 6 Only buy used. New is nice, but there are very few items that you need to purchase new. Learn to buy everything used or don’t buy it at all. eBay, Craigslist, second-hand shops, flea markets and garage sales will be your new shopping grounds. This should reduce your spending by 50% or more and you’ll be the only one to know you didn’t pay retail prices. 5 Buy one, donate three. You know that you have too much stuff and your closets and other storage areas prove it. If you really want to purchase something, vow to donate, sell or get rid of three items for every one that you buy. If you want that new shirt, those new shoes or a new book, you have to give up three of each to get it. 4 Make Christmas a no-spend holiday. Decide that you are opting out of the commercialism of Christmas or whatever winter holiday you celebrate and turn it into a no-spend holiday. Instead, go back to the roots of what the holiday is supposed to mean. It will not be easy and friends and family may not understand, but not only will you save a bundle of money, you’ll have a less stress while getting a lot more meaning out of the holidays. 3 Don’t eat out. That’s right. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all made in your kitchen. No exceptions for snacks (no trips to the bakery or the office vending machine) and coffee as well. If it goes into your mouth, it is prepared by you from your kitchen. This means putting aside time to prepare meals and snacks and taking everything with you when you leave your house. Though not easy, the results will dramatically improve your health.

You can’t see the wind blow, but you can definitely see the effect of its presence. You see that every time you look at a picture of a city or country ravaged by a hurricane or tornado. Every once in a while we come across a story that gives us the same awe inspiring look into the power of grace, love, and forgiveness and we remember the scripture with God, “all things are possible”. Enter the story of Alter Weiner. Alter is a survivor of the holocaust and his story will inspire you. Alter’s story is an example of the tenacity of the human spirit and of the grace of God working in one man’s life. He spent 35 months in Nazi concentration camps, yet he travels around the world sharing his story of love and forgiveness. Alter tells us the Nazi’s took away his name and gave him a number, “64735”. During his incarceration Alter prayed to God. His survival is a testimony of a man who always prayed and never gave up. Alter loves to share how is story of surviving the concentration camps has encouraged many young people to not commit suicide. One of his goals is to assure all of us that the holocaust did happen, and to combat racism and prejudice where ever it occurs. Alter says it best when he quotes a wise sage you stated “A smart man is the one who learns from his experience, but still the smartest is the one who learns from somebody else’s experience.” Alter also states, “it is imperative not to lose hope, to be appreciative of life despite adversities one has to face. My desire is to leave this world a better place than the one I inherited and experienced.” God answers prayer and through God’s grace Alter is still alive to tell his story. Until next time, I’m Dave Adams, TJN The Jesus Network, it is time to change the planet.

Prior to the 16th century, cauliflower was available exclusively in Italy. It eventually made its way to other European countries and was brought to North America in the late 1600s. Almost all cauliflower that is grown in the United States comes from the Salinas Valley in California. It is usually white in color but can actually be orange, green, or even purple. Cauliflower is a member of the cabbage family - in fact the name cauliflower actually means “cabbage flower. It is available year-round, but is especially plentiful in the spring and fall. Cauliflower is high in vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate. Just one cup of cauliflower a day will provide you with 70% of your daily vitamin C requirements. Enjoying raw cauliflower will give you the highest nutritional benefits. If you choose to serve it cooked, lightly steaming it is the best way to retain the maximum nutrients.

By Kathy Dennis, Director of Points for Profit Q: We were recipients of an award from Points for Profit this year and we were thrilled! It wasn’t one of the larger awards but it will still go a long way to help! Thank you! My question is a little long. We have to calculate coming to the meetings, travel, events, and cost of meals etc., and at the end of the year, the smaller awards just don’t seem to be worth it. Are there plans to build the amount given back? A: What a great question. First of all it was such a blessing this year to be able to give back to so many of our local non-profit organizations. We are honored and humbled to be able to work with so many incredible and worthy non-profit partners and businesses. We have had God’s grace since the program began over ten years ago and we have been able to give a little more back each year. Our goal is to bring the amount that we give back to $100,000 from the $36,000 that was given back this year! Another thing we work hard to do is to help our non-profit organizations get “connected” with businesses and the community and to help more people hear about you and want to help if it be by volunteering or donations. Our prayer is that all of our partners are prosperous both non-profit and businesses. That is why Points for Profit was developed, to build awareness of local business and local non-profit organizations and link arms and work together to make a difference in the community we live, work, and worship.

Points for Profit meeting is Mar. 26, 2013 from 6-9pm at the Eagles, Albany. Qdoba will be serving their famous Naked Burrito Bar. See you there! Tickets are $8. If you would like to reserve a dinner please RSVP by 5pm Mar. 25, 2013 to kdennis@inspiritmarketing.com or call (541) 791-2901. For more info visit pointsforprofit.org

Chewing gum is said to be the world’s most common habit. Approximately 100,000 tons of gum is consumed every year. Research is also showing that our gum chewing habit has some positive effects on oral hygiene and teeth health.

Choosing a stick of sugar free gum at the end of a meal can: • Stimulate the flow of saliva in the mouth • Clean the mouth of food debris • Relieve dry mouth discomfort • Neutralize plaque acids that form in the mouth after eating • Help to remineralize enamel to strengthen teeth • Help reduce plaque • Help to whiten teeth by reducing and preventing stains

So how exactly does chewing sugar free gum work to protect teeth? Chewing gum after a meal stimulates the saliva production which helps to neutralize and wash away acid produced by bacteria after eating. Teeth are the most vulnerable to tooth decay right after meals when plaque and acid levels rise dramatically. Studies show that chewing gum removes the acid within minutes, slowing down the tooth decay processes. When looking for a sugar free gum, look for a gum that uses Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is shown to fight cavities and dental decay by creating an unwelcome environment for bacteria. Gum that contains sugar actually fuels acid producing bacteria in your mouth, so it is important to choose a sugar free gum. Xylitol, a sugar substitute, is a natural enemy of bacteria because it causes bacteria to lose its ability to stick to teeth.

Although offering a few days of paid sick leave each year may seem like an unnecessary expense, small businesses may actually be losing much more by not encouraging sick employees to stay home. Roses Now is the time to fertilize roses in early to mid-spring as new growth occurs, and again in the early summer, using a complete fertilizer to supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A 5-10-10 fertilizer works well really well for this. Amending Soil As we start getting some breaks in the rain in early spring it’s a great time to start adding to garden and flower bed soils in preparation for the growing season. Coffee Grounds Do you make a daily coffee at home? Many people are interested to know if they can use coffee grounds in their compost. The short answer is “yes”! Save your grounds and use them to amend your garden soils or add them to your compost bin/pile. First of all coffee grounds are a very good addition to your composting efforts. They would be considered a “green” or nitrogen source. C/N ratio about 20:1. While it is widely thought that they are acidic it has been shown that most of this acidity is removed in the brewing process. Used grounds are

essentially neutral and composting them with other materials will buffer any minor residual acidity. The grounds are a great soil conditioner and worms love Word them too! They add nitrogen, phosphorous, From potassium, magnesium WILCO and copper. Want more? A Brian great website for those Coons, that are specifically Wilco preparing for vegetable gardening this year is www.harvesttotable.com. They have a great past article on soil amendments and what they contain and will do for your soil. Moss Now is the time to add Calpril lime to your lawn. Prilled lime is great because it won’t burn, and the lime particles are so small (smaller than a lime) that they react faster and show results within about a month or so. Now In Wilco Garden Centers • Fruit Trees (bare root) • Berries (bare root Strawberry, Logan, Boysen, Marion) • Pansies • Summer Blooming Bulbs (Gladiolas & Dahlias) • Seed Potatoes

A fascinating march of folly took place during the Dutch Golden AgeTulipomania! Tulips were a new discovery and the normally staid Dutch developed this type of mania that would ultimately bankrupt many of them. A single variegated tulip bulb could cost up to 4,200 Guilders- a master craftsman could earn 300 Guilders per year! Variegated tulips were wildly popular. Their vivid coloring was caused by a mosaic virus carried by aphids. It causes the breakdown of the anthocyanin pigments that produce the red, blue and purple colors in the petals. It was a miraculous, but wildly unpredictable process that added to the desirability (and value!) of the bulbs. A futures market developed quickly and prices spiked even before the bulbs were lifted. All sorts of goodsin-kind, cows, cloth, looms, shops, houses, and even acres of farmland were delivered at once in hopes of

future profit. And this was mostly an urban phenomenon! Only a small portion of the populace, mainly merchants and craftsman were involved. The prices peaked on February 5, 1637. And it came to pass that tulips became a commodity to be sold by sellers who could not deliver to buyers who could not pay! It is an interesting to note that while this wild speculation was growing, another, more serious peril was looming. Bubonic Plague raged through the country at the same time, killing nearly one-seventh of the population. Because there were fewer skilled laborers, wages skyrocketed and even more were able to gamble on flowers.. Many lost their homes, farms and livelihoods and wound up penniless. We still appreciate the beauty of tulips, but I don’t think anyone today is at risk of bankruptcy because of them. Beauty is still in the eye of the beholder. And reason in his wallet.

Second, they collect non-point source pollution from the right-of-way and provide filtration, detention, and evaporation of stormwater runoff before it enters the Willamette River and the City's urban streams. The goal is to develop an evaluation tool for prioritizing improvement projects throughout the City based on criteria chosen through extensive discussions between community stakeholders, technical advisory group members, City residents, and City Staff.

Why is the City of Corvallis doing this? When the needs of people on foot, public transportation, and bicycles are integrated with the treatment of stormwater, our natural resources are better protected and the quality of life of our citizens is improved. Implementing the Healthy Streets Initiative will meet the goals of the City's sustainability policies and numerous community organizations as well as state regulations and goals defined by the Environmental Protection Agency. When will the Healthy Streets Initiative occur? The project started in October of 2012 and will conclude in April of 2014. A community survey was implemented in November 2012 by Lockwood Research with results posted on the City of Corvallis Healthy Streets website. Technical Advisory Group meetings are already underway and public meetings will be held beginning in March 2013. Public meeting dates and locations are posted below and will also be advertised in the Corvallis Gazette-Times and on our website. Who do I contact if I have questions? For additional information

Recently I was in a small shop I use frequently. The usually cheerful lady helping me was noticeably ill. As she coughed and sneezed I felt sorry for her and yet I kept thinking whatever she has is now all over everything she is going to hand me back. Unfortunately this time of year we all see this. According to the National Compensation Survey, Four out of every 10 American workers do not have access to paid sick leave— and, when it comes to those employed by small businesses, that number increases to nearly seven out of 10! If these employees get sick, they must take time off work without pay, which may not be financially feasible for the employee. Or they show up at work fighting a common cold or the seasonal flu, which isn’t healthy for your business. Below are just four reasons you should consider a paid sick leave policy encouraging employees to stay home when they are ill. • Sick employees are less productive than healthy ones. In the story above when I entered that shop the employee whom I had always seen busy and attentively working on something was sitting in a chair head against the wall, I thought she was sleeping. It is a proven fact when employees aren’t feeling well, their productivity drops. Their senses

aren’t as sharp, and reflexes slow as the body struggles to heal itself. As a smallbusiness owner, you may end up paying full price for half the usual work — not to mention customers not happy about taking BY Cheryl home what your Vaun, employee has! Complete • Sick and Business distracted co-workers. Solutions A sneezing, hacking, coughing employee is a distraction for other workers as they try to focus on their daily duties. They may also resent the fact that their co-worker came to work sick, putting them (and perhaps others, including your customers) at risk of getting infected. • The illness may spread. Do you really want your small business to go from having one sick employee to two or three? Calculate the cost as the illness spreads slowly, taking down a couple of workers every few days? Consider that you aren’t immune, either. If you end up under the weather, too, you may miss valuable time on the job. • The illness may drag on. A sick person who never takes time to recover may find that their illness drags on much longer than it would have if they’d gotten even one day of solid rest. This makes the worker less productive over a longer

Protecting taxpayers and their tax refunds from identity theft is a top priority for the IRS. This year the IRS expanded its efforts to better protect taxpayers and help victims dealing with this difficult issue. When your personal information is lost or stolen, it can lead to identity theft. Identity thieves sometimes use your personal information to file a tax return to claim a tax refund. Then, when you file your own tax return, the IRS will not accept it and will notify you that a return was already filed using your name and social security number. Often, learning that your return was not accepted or receiving a contact from the IRS about a problem with your tax return is the first time you become aware that you’re a victim of identity theft.

How to avoid becoming an identity theft victim: Guard your personal information. Identity thieves can get your personal information in many ways. This includes stealing your wallet or purse, posing as someone who needs information about you, looking through your trash, or stealing information you provide to an unsecured website or in an unencrypted email. Watch out for IRS impersonators. Be aware that the IRS does not initiate contact

with taxpayers by email or social media channels to request personal or financial information or notify people of an audit, refund or investigation. Scammers may also use phone calls, faxes, websites or even Cathy in-person contacts. If Baker, you’re suspicious that American Bookkeeping it’s not really the IRS contacting you, don’t and Tax respond. Visit our web page to see what to do. Protect information on your computer. While preparing your tax return, protect it with a strong password. Once you e-file the return, take it off your hard drive and store it on a CD or flash drive in a safe place, like a lock box or safe. If you use a tax preparer, ask how he or she will protect your information.

How to know if you are, or might be, a victim of identity theft: Your identity may have been stolen if the IRS notifies you that: • You filed more than one tax return or someone has already filed using your information; • You owe taxes for a year when you were not legally required to file and did not file; or • You were paid wages from an employer where you did not work. Cauliflower continued from page 8 water for at least 10 minutes and then rinse. A common Italian way to serve cauliflower is to first clean, and then dry the florets. Place a large skillet on the stovetop on medium heat. When the pan is warm, add a little olive oil. Once the oil is warm, add 2 smashed cloves of garlic and cook until the garlic are fragrant, approximately 30 seconds. Quickly add the cauliflower florets to the pan and cook until they are nicely browned. While it is cooking, mix together 3 tablespoons of tomato paste, 2 tablespoons of water, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in a small bowl. When the florets are finished cooking, add the tomato paste mixture and toss with the cauliflower in the skillet until the sauce is warm and evenly distributed. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese (if desired, a little crushed red pepper can be added to taste). This is an easy and delicious Italian dish. Cauliflower is a vegetable that is often overlooked because of its mild flavor, but it pairs with many other foods. Flavors that best compliment cauliflower are those of parsley, garlic, lemon, hollandaise sauce, butter (especially brown butter), bread crumbs, and Cheddar, Gruyère or Parmesan cheese. One of my favorite ways to serve cauliflower is to enjoy it roasted. It brings out a sweet and caramelized flavor. The amazing soup recipe below is from my cookbook, A Taste of Italy… My Favorite Soups, which can be purchased at Pizza King.

Roasted Cauliflower Soup Ingredients:

• 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 cup coarsely chopped onion • 2 cups diced Yukon gold potatoes, with peel • 2 cups fresh cauliflower florets

Directions

• • • • •

4 large whole garlic cloves, peeled 6 cups vegetable or chicken stock 1 cup tomato juice ½ teaspoon dried red pepper flakes ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

• Preheat oven to 425˚F. • In a large bowl, toss the cauliflower, potatoes, garlic, and onions together with the oil. • Place the vegetables on one or two baking sheets. There should be a generous amount of room around each vegetable for the roasting process. If they are crowded on the baking sheet, they will not develop the delicious depth of flavor that roasting creates. Stir the vegetables once or twice during the roasting process so that they cook evenly. Remove the vegetables from the oven just as they begin to brown. • To a large stockpot, add the roasted vegetables, broth, tomato juice, and pepper flakes. Simmer for 35 minutes. Remove from the heat and purée half of the soup in a blender. Fill the blender half full and allow the soup in the blender to cool for 10 minutes. Always use caution with hot liquids in the blender; place the lid on and place a folded towel on top of the blender lid so that the hot steam will not burn your hand. Pulse the blender a few times before puréeing. Add the puréed vegetables to the stock pot and warm. When ready to serve, adjust the salt and add pepper to taste. Serve in warmed soup bowls and with grated Parmesan cheese and croutons. Serves 6

Love certainly is in the air in February and not just for people, but for skunks, too! As you may have unfortunately noticed, or smelled, adult skunks become more active and begin their breeding season in late February. They generally only become a nuisance when their burrowing and feeding habits conflict with humans. Even though they don’t truly hibernate, they do “den up” and like to burrow under low porches or buildings by entering foundation openings or utilizing the burrows left by other animals. It is entirely possible to be unaware that skunks have taken up residence under your porch or home until that foul smell becomes impossible to ignore. Adult skunks begin breeding in late February. Yearling females, (born in the preceding year) mate in late March. Gestation usually lasts 7 to 10 weeks. Older females bear young during the first part of May, while yearling females bear young in early June. There is usually only 1 litter annually. Litters commonly consist of 4 to 6 young, but may have from 2 to 16. Younger or smaller females have smaller litters than older or larger females. The young stay with the female until fall. Both sexes mature by the following spring. Skunks eat plant and animal foods in about equal amounts during fall and winter. They eat considerably more animal matter during spring and summer when insects, their preferred food, are more available. Grasshoppers, beetles, and crickets are the

adult insects most often consumed. Field and house mice are regular and important items in the skunk diet, particularly in winter. Rats, cottontail rabbits, and other small mammals are taken Sean when other food is Meiner scarce. Skunks have one Healthy distinguishing feature Home Pest Control, LLC that is both well known, (541) 570-0095 and well feared…you guessed it... their spray. Skunks are famous for spraying people and pets with their foul-smelling spray, which can shoot as far as 7 to 15 feet when they feel threatened! Their spray has the odor of rotten eggs or burnt rubber and can be sensed as far as a mile away upwind. Skunks are also a known carrier of rabies. For these reasons, it is a very good idea to keep them away from areas where people and domestic animals live. Here are a few ways to get rid of skunks and keep them from returning. Seal up areas where skunks can make a home such as low porches or decks and repair any foundation openings. Bury fencing 1 1/2 to 2 feet (0.4 to 0.6 m) where skunks can gain access by digging. Keep food away from skunks. Unfortunately, they will eat mostly anything they find edible. This includes trash, compost piles and dog and cat food. Also, be sure to pick up dead fruit that falls from your trees. Rid your home of mice and rats. If there are rodents in the yard, skunks will follow. Love Stinks continued on page 15

Hello all! This is Anne Turner President and Owner of A Turning Leaf Home Medical Equipment. Spring time is once again upon us. While many people make a point to clean their homes, offices’, cars, and yards, it is important not to forget about your CPAP and BIPAP machines. While one doesn’t need to clean their CPAP machine as often as they replace their masks and tubing, it is a good idea to clean the device from time to time. Since the CPAP draws air in from its surroundings, this can cause it to become dusty, faster than other household items. Generally the CPAP is used by one’s bedside, and this accumulating dust may have an adverse effect on the health of you and your bed partner. The dust that has accumulated on the CPAP will cause the filter to become dirty, at a faster rate, and could also potentially cause electrical problems for the unit. In fact, if one doesn’t keep one’s CPAP machine clean, could result in the loss of the recommended 3-5 years of life expectancy of the breathing machine. All these undesirable consequences can be avoided simply by periodically making sure that your CPAP machine is free from dust and other germs that can accumulate over time. Here at A Turning Leaf Home Medical, we provide a CPAP device cleaning and inspection free of charge. We encourage our patients along, with anyone who uses a CPAP to stop by one of our family owned and operated offices and allow our staff to make sure your device/equipment are clean and in working order. This includes a device cleaning by one of our Home Medical Sleep

Specialists. A Sleep Specialist will check to make sure your device is delivering the proper pressure, along with a chance for you have all questions that you have to be answered. In fact many BiPAP and CPAP clients may not even realize how important it is to regularly replace their supplies for their machine. The supplies which are listed below are designed to be disposable and need to be replaced as directed by your local Home Health Care Provider or manufactures suggested replacement schedule. This is very important in order to maintain proper therapy. Using your supplies past the recommended time is akin to letting one’s car go past the scheduled oil change causing wear and tear on the engine. This can actually be dangerous due to the delicate nature of the products used to make the CPAP supplies, such as masks and headgear. Mask leaking, filter clogs can jeopardize your health by allowing pollen and dust particles to be delivered into your airway. Imagine something as simple as an overstretched headgear causing pressure point sores and unnecessary and uncomfortable pain. Taking care of your CPAP is as important as Spring Cleaning, If you follow a few suggestions and make your important visits at least every 3-6 months with your local home care provider you will be able to enjoy the quality of life that CPAP machines provide. These are suggested and important

Travel Spring is just around the corner and in the animal welfare world that means one thing – kitten season. Kitten season is that time of year when kittens are typically born, flooding shelters and cat rescue groups with newborns that are too young to be adopted. This presents numerous challenges for shelters and rescue groups who are faced with trying to find temporary homes for the kittens until they are old enough to be adopted. The shelter environment is not suitable for newborn kittens, as their immune systems are not yet developed, so they are highly susceptible to illness. It’s always ideal to keep kittens with their mom until they are at least 6 weeks old. Fostering is a great way to help shelters through kitten season. During this time of year, the need for foster families dramatically increases. SafeHaven Humane Society can

get as many as 50 to 70 calls each day about homeless cats and kittens. In addition to caring for animals too young to be adopted, foster families enable SafeHaven Humane Society to place animals into temporary homes if there isn’t space at the shelter or for injured dogs and cats. Giving these animals a little extra training, attention and socialization or time to grow and heal allows us to be able to help even more animals. Want to help? February was national pet dental month and so I thought I would write a short article highlighting some of the important facts regarding at home dental care and dental disease in our pets. Approximately eighty five percent or our patients have some degree of periodontal disease by the age of three. The process starts with the formation of plaque, which is a film of bacteria and saliva that forms on the enamel of teeth. If the film sets for long enough on the tooth it begins too react with minerals naturally found in our saliva and form rock hard tartar. As tartar forms oxygen levels drop near the surface of the tooth and this favors the growth of anaerobic bacteria that are more harmful. The bacteria and tartar begin to move under the come line causing gingivitis. This becomes evident as swelling and reddening along the gum line with bleeding often observed with just minor mechanical irritation. Seeing blood more frequently on chew toys can be a clue to the onset of periodontal disease in dogs. Once bacteria moves under gums they start to break down the ligaments and alveolar bone that hold the teeth in their sockets. Seventy percent of a tooth lives under the gum line. As this degradation takes place toxins and bacteria can leach into the blood and cause inflammation in the kidneys as well as damage to the valves of the heart. Feeding dry kibble helps reduce the rate of plaque formation but is in no way a substitute for brushing. Imagine if we gave up brushing our own teeth in favor or only eating crunchy food. Brushing is the ideal way to get rid of plaque before it

has a chance to mineralize into tartar and eventually move under the gums. This takes time and training. Ideally twice a day is best but I can definitely tell the difference between a dog that has its teeth brushed every other day and a dog that doesn’t get its teeth brushed at all. It’s easier to start training a young dog to accept a toothbrush. Use a brush with extra soft bristles. The first step is just getting them used to having their mouths manipulated. Gently using your finger or a piece of gauze to wipe the teeth in the same manner you will be using the toothbrush. After a couple of weeks of doing this daily to twice daily you should introduce the toothbrush. After your dog accepts the toothbrush you can introduce pet friendly toothpaste. Pet toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors and some have enzymes that help kill bacteria. Do not use toothpaste intended for people because the fluoride will make them ill. When brushing; try to focus on the outside of the upper teeth. Use elliptical motions angled at forty five degrees toward the gums. Try to get in 10 to 15 tight elliptical motions in before moving to the next area. Do not worry about brushing the insides of the teeth. Just focus on the outsides. If your pet refuses to accept a brush due to sensitive gums there are dental wipes that can be used to help remove plaque. If your dog already has moderate to severe periodontal then a full cleaning by a veterinarian will be necessary to give you a clean surface to start with. Never attempt to clean a dog’s teeth during the first week after a veterinary cleaning as gums are often too tender during this time. Adjunctive methods of keeping teeth clean should be used in addition to brushing Pet Teeth continued on page 15

Memories With Spring just around the corner, it’s time to lighten up a bit. Since the beginning of movies there have been a number of popular comedy teams. Every major studio had at least one team and some of the studios had several. Many got their start by being inserted in feature dramas as comedy relief. Such was the case for Ted Healy and his Stooges at MGM. They would later lose Healy, whom I quite frankly, found annoying. They moved to Columbia pictures where they would spend nearly 25 years making a series of comedy short subjects through 1959. That catapulted them onto TV and a whole second career of making personal appearances and a number of feature films. The Stooges even made a big budget CinemaScope and Color by Deluxe film for 20th Centuty Fox: “Snow White and the Three Stooges”. Meanwhile, in 1940, Universal pictures discovered the old time vaudeville team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello and put them in as supporting players in a movie about an insurance scam named, “One Night in the Tropics”, where they played second fiddle to Universal stars Robert Cummings and Peggy Moran. It didn’t take long for audiences to discover the boys and Universal quickly put them in

a number of wartime comedies, along with the popular musical stars The Andrews Sisters. Movies with titles like “Buck Privates”, “In The Navy”, “Hold That Ghost” and others were filling Rick theaters in every city Rogers and town across the Movies country. and DVDs Abbott and Costello were Universal’s top money makers grinding out film after film. Occasionally, the boys would slip off to MGM, Warner Brothers, RKO or other independent producers for films including their only two movies in color, “Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd” and “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Then in 1949, Universal produced “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”, their most popular film. That started a string of films in which the boys met all of the famous Universal studio monsters ending with “Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy”, their last film for Universal in 1956. All of their Universal classics are available in 8 movies sets from most internet sources. Others, including the Three Stooges shorts and features are also available from amazon.com, TCM and other sources. Try them out. You’ll have a hard time keeping from laughing out loud.

To reduce the benefits of working in a bookstore to a sole one is absurd, but perhaps I can highlight an aspect I very much enjoy: talking with customers about the books they have read, are reading, or want to read. Although popular modern fiction is commonly read, many of the classics are widely read. Other than the ubiquitous Jane Austen, the classic novel which might be most read is Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. The most likely reason for this novel’s enduring popularity to a wide variety of readers (and I have many customers who tell me they loved reading it in the fourth or fifth grade, the age many of today’s kids are reading the equally long Harry Potter series), is that it succeeds on so many levels. Looking for a plotdriven novel of revenge? How about a complicated romance better than any soap opera? Political intrigue? Historical fiction? Good character studies? Looking for insights into men as instruments of divine will; the meaning and varieties of free will; faith in man versus faith in God; political freedoms versus freedom with political power; or any number of moral issues? They are all here. Take

what you enjoy most out of it. The story involves Edmond Dantes, who is wrongly accused of treason and thrown into prison with no hope Scott of release. After Givens, fourteen years he Browsers Bookstores, makes a daring escape, only to and fellow find his father dead reviewer, and his betrothed daughter, married to one of his Amanda accusers. He plots Givens intricate revenge. As he carries out his plan, he increasingly finds himself in a moral dilemma: should he punish the descendants of his enemies (which was part of his original plan--what better way to punish a man than harm his children?), even though they are innocent? One of the pleasures of reading the classics is finding the copy you want to read. Unlike most modern literature, the older stories have been published with a variety of bindings, illustrations, and layouts (and in this case, translations). Take your time to find the best one for you: if you only read it once, it may as well be the most enjoyable experience possible! Remember, Browser’s Bookstores in Albany and Corvallis are proud to be business partners in the Points for Profit program so save those receipts.

2. Don’t pay for entertainment. There was a time when we had to entertain ourselves and although it might be difficult to give up paid entertainment, it’s possible to go back to those roots and find your entertainment for free. You likely have to look a little harder, be a little more creative and be a bit more active, but there are plenty of opportunities for activities that are free – walks, hikes, bike rides, and concerts in the park. 1. Start your own business. More work after work is not what most people would consider easy, but it’s a great way to help your finances. It means working a double shift; eight hours at your current job and then when you get home, another eight on building your new business. It takes time and patience, as well as a lot of effort, so pick one that you enjoy. Whether your part-time business makes a little to supplement your regular income or grows so that it’s making as much as your regular job, it will help your bottom line. These are hard ways to improve your finances, but adopting any of them can change your financial outlook for the better both quickly and dramatically.
