Historic Preservation Month

Points

By Rick Rogers

The entire month of May is National Historic Preservation Month. When it comes to preserving our historic buildings, the city of Albany is the leader in the state. The national theme for May is, “See, Save, Celebrate.” This special month is full of activities designed to protect structures and areas in our neighborhoods and communities, raising awareness of the value of preserving local history celebrating our diverse and unique heritage. Albany has gained a national reputation as a destination for people who love historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings. According to information from the Albany Visitor’s Association, the city of Albany contains four nationally recognized historic districts with over 800 qualifying homes and buildings, three outstanding museums, and two significant churches. Within the city, there are thirteen classic architectural structure styles giving Albany the reputation of having the most varied collection of architecture in the state. During the month of May, there are many events

planned throughout Albany giving residents and tourists a chance to see much of what the city has historically to offer. On Friday, May 3, the Albany Downtown Association and the Albany Rotary Club will host the once-a-year Upstairs-Downtown Tour and Wine Walk through the downtown core shopping area from 5PM until 8PM. This brings hundreds of visitors into downtown Albany and allows them an opportunity to tour through the upstairs areas of many of the city’s oldest commercial buildings. More information on the tour may be obtained by going online to: www. albanydowntown.com. Many other activities are planned, such as a walking tours of the downtown buildings and other areas, special workshops throughout the month on researching historic homes and buildings, making accurate window repairs, heritage trees and markers, and much more. Details are available at the Albany Visitor’s Association on the corner of Third Avenue and Lyon St. or online at www.albanydowntown.com. Albany has much to offer the history buff and allows us to showcase and learn from our past when we were known as “The Hub of the Willamette Valley.”

The Venition Theater, built in 1913 and once destined for the wrecking ball, has been renovated into a jewel in downtown Albany housing the Fusion Faith Center.

The Monteith House in downtown Albany is the city’s oldest home built in 1848 and now operates as a museum.

The crew at the Albany Visitor’s Association stands ready to help you plan your Summer activities at their new location, Third Avenue and Lyon St. in downtown Albany.

By Karen Rogers In an archaic poem, “Sumer is icumin in, lhude sing cucu” according to an anonymous poet around the year 1226. It may seem cuckoo to get ready in May for a season that does not really begin until 10:04 P.M. June 20! But most people are all ready for summer by Memorial Day, observed this year on May 27. This is a good time to prepare for family and class reunions and the many large, warm weather celebrations. Being from the East Coast, I particularly loved to show off the beauties of Oregon to my rather effete relatives and friends. The highest “mountain” in New Jersey is 1200 feet! HA! It ain’t a real mountain unless it’s got snow on it in August or blows up on occasion! My Mom had a tough time at first realizing that the snow-caps on the local mountains weren’t clouds, and a friend from Missouri shared that view point. The Coast is another case in point. The Mid-Atlantic region is flat. The highest points are highway bridges. Areas in Delaware and Maryland have ground water levels about one foot down. Our spectacular cliffs and sea mounts are sure to awe “foreigners.” My Uncle, a real deep-sea tuna fisher and boatman, on his own large boat, LOVED sailing out of Depoe Bay! The adrenaline rush from passing through that narrow passage in heavy seas was cat-nip to him! Also, it’s fun to spring our chilly beaches on people used to warm sand and warm gentle waves. Skimpy suits and light wrappers aren’t much good when you need wool socks and basic survival gear for a day on the beach. I’m planning several barbecues for July and August, when we can almost guarantee fine weather. Oregon is a wonderful Summer Place! Bring on the tourists!

Travel Vaccines Do your plans for summer include vacationing outside of the United States? Travel to a foreign country requires some extra planning: acquiring a passport, ensuring you will have an adequate supply of your prescription medications, buying special adaptors for your electronic devices, among other things. This is a good time to review your vaccination records to make sure you are up to date on the recommended immunizations for the locations you plan to visit. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) posts up-to-date information for travelers on their website: wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/. By entering a specific city name, you can find out which immunizations are required, as well as current public health concerns for that area. There are a few immunizations that are prudent for any destination, so they will be the focus of this article. The bacteria that cause tetanus reside in soil, dust, and saliva worldwide. After entering the body through cuts, punctures, burns, crushing, or scraping injuries; tetanus produces a toxin which causes severe muscle contractions. The disease is sometimes called “lockjaw,” because the painful spasms make it impossible to open ones mouth. If your trip (or home life) includes participation in a

construction project, or sports (i.e. biking, rock climbing, parasailing, etc), where the likelihood of cuts and abrasions is high, you are at risk for Pamela Becker, RpH contracting tetanus. Adults can protect Rice’s themselves from Pharmacy tetanus by getting a tetanus booster every & Gifts ten years. A “Pill Box Pertussis Pharmacy” (whooping cough) is also endemic. Pertussis is passed person to person on saliva droplets. People who were immunized against pertussis in childhood need one booster in adulthood for lifetime immunity. If you need tetanus and pertussis, they are available in a combination product known as Tdap. There are several different types of hepatitis found throughout the world. Hepatitis infection causes chronic inflammation and dysfunction of the liver, for which there is no cure. Currently, there are vaccines available for two types of hepatitis: A and B. Hepatitis A is transmitted person to person (by contact with saliva or feces) and through ingesting contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B is spread by exposure to contaminated blood (cuts, needle- stick, needle- sharing, piercings, tattooing, etc) and by sexual contact. Vaccines for hepatitis A and B are available separately or as a combined product. It is important to note that the Vaccines continued on page 9

HPV Vaccinations for Kids

Earth

I have noticed an alarming trend: Pediatricians are giving vaccinations for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease, to children as young as 4 years old. As a parent, it can be difficult to know what is best for your child, especially with limited information. Here is some additional information that may help you with a decision about having your child vaccinated for HPV. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease and the cause of genital warts. Certain strains of HPV can increase the risk of cervical cancer in women. About 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and about 4,000 of them die from it. HPV vaccines have been given since 2006 after being fast-tracked through the FDA’s drug approval process (despite not meeting any of the four criteria for fasttrack approval). The two vaccine brands available today are Gardasil (by Merck) and Cervarix (by GlaxoSmithKline). These vaccines are designed for 2 of the over 40 types of HPV. There are 15 types of HPV that are associated with cervical cancer and the other 13 types are associated with over 30% of the cases of cervical cancer. Your pediatrician and the CDC will tell you that these vaccines have proven to be very affective; however, most of their data

comes from Merck and GlaxoSmithKline. Can we trust this type of data? Merck funded most of the research which showed that the drug Vioxx was safe although it ended up killing about 60,000 people until it was taken off the Dr. Jason market in 2004. These Young vaccines have not had long term trials nor been proven to prevent any cervical cancer at this point. The vaccine, given in 3 doses within 6 months, has only been administered for the past 7 years which is not enough time to determine whether there are any long-term side effects or efficacy. Compared to all other vaccinations, Gardasil is associated with 61% of all adverse vaccine reactions, including death and permanent disability in females under the age of 30. In addition, there is no information about the duration of any of the beneficial effects that may be associated with HPV vaccination. The best way to save lives from the dangers of cervical cancer is for women to be screened for cancerous and precancerous lesions. Since this practice was implemented, the incidence and death rate from cervical cancer has fallen by 80% with no harmful side effects. In fact, today the greatest risk factor for cervical cancer is not HPV; it is actually not having

Affordable Care Act – Finds forward to 2014 I am looking Are you looking forward to the changes in healthcare in 2014? Are you aware that individuals and small employer groups will be able to purchase health insurance through Oregon’s Marketplace called Cover Oregon? As an Agent selling individual health insurance, I am looking forward to the new application, which no health questions. Are you aware that currently there are 55 health questions? You could be denied coverage if you are underweight or overweight, if you have an abnormal pap smear, if you have allergies or asthma. If the true cost of your prescription drugs cost almost as much as your monthly premium, or 2/3 of the cost of your monthly premium, you could be denied coverage. As an agent, I work with the applicant to assist them to submit a correctly filled out application supplying the information that health insurance carriers are looking for to help obtain approval in the current process. Yet I am looking forward to no health questions. I have seen the proposed application for 2014. It is similar to enrollment into Healthy Kids program. The application will ask questions about your income and assets information, and there will be no health questions! This is good news.

The Affordable Care Act in 2014 will eliminate the “Pre-existing conditions” waiver that is currently limiting newly insured. If you have not had health insurance previously Donna R. and received approval for your individual Green Northwest health insurance, you will get a letter financial that there will be a Services limit of coverage for any pre-existing issues. During the first six (6) months following a new insured’s affective date, no coverage will be provided for the treatment of a pre-existing condition. Insurance carriers will not pay toward a pre-existing condition for insured age 19 and older, even if the pre-existing condition worsens or recurs during the first six months of the term of the policy. This limitation “goes away” with the PPCA. The enrollment starts October 1st 2013 through March 31, 2014. If you do not enroll in that time period, you will not be able to enroll into health insurance unless you have a qualifying event such as “loss of group health insurance coverage,” divorce and lost coverage, newly married and going on spouse coverage, and other type of qualifying events. The next enrollment period will be October 15 through December 7 of every year after March 31, 2014.

NCUA-A Brief History

Idea

As a credit union member, your funds are insured through the National Credit Union Association. Conversely, bank customers are insured through the FDIC or Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The following excerpt gives a brief history of the NCUA, derived from their website: “In 1934, President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law authorizing the formation of federally chartered credit unions in all states. The purpose of the federal law was to make credit available and promote thrift through a national system of nonprofit, cooperative credit unions.” After the Federal Credit Union Act was signed into law, the new Bureau of Federal Credit Unions was first housed at the Farm Credit Administration. Regulatory responsibility shifted over the years as the agency moved from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to the Federal Security Agency, and then the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. • Meanwhile, in the ‘40s and ‘50s, credit unions grew steadily and by 1960, credit union membership reached more than 6 million people at over 10,000 federal credit unions.

• In 1970, the Bureau became an independent federal agency when the National Credit Union Administration was formed to charter and supervise federal credit unions, and the Darin National Credit Union Klarr Share Insurance Fund SELCO (NCUSIF) was also Community formed to insure credit union deposits. CU Branch In the independent Manager credit union spirit, the NCUSIF was created without tax dollars and capitalized solely by credit unions. The 1970s brought major changes in the products offered by financial institutions, and credit unions found they too needed to expand their services. In 1977, legislation expanded services available to credit union members, including share certificates and mortgage lending. In 1979, a three-member Board replaced the NCUA administrator. That same year, Congress created the Central Liquidity Facility, the credit union lender of last resort. The 1970s were years of tremendous growth in credit unions. The number of credit union members more than doubled and assets in credit unions tripled to over $65 billion. Deregulation, increased flexibility NCUA-A continued on page 14

A Guide to Choosing the Best Floor Lamp for Your Home

Travel

The right or wrong kind of lighting in your homes can make or break your décor. Therefore, it is important that attention be paid to lighting as well as light fittings. Proper lighting can increase the aesthetics of a room. In a perfect world, we would be able to change the lights in our houses with every change in the décor of our homes or with every addition of a piece of furniture or art. However, changing permanent light fixtures is not only costly; it is also time consuming. A better method of varying the décor with the help of lighting is to use lamps. A large variety of lamps are available in the market today, catering to all kinds of budgets and décor styles. You can choose a number of lamps ranging from floor to table to hanging lamps, depending on your needs. Out of these, floor lamps are one of the most versatile and stylish looking lamps. Floor lamps are generally used in room corners, entrance ways and in dining and living rooms. Floor lamps, apart from functioning as a source of illumination, also tend to add to the décor of a room, even when they are not in use (in the daytime). Therefore, it is important that you choose your floor lamp while keeping some basic points in mind. A number of tips given below will help you choose floor lamps that are most suitable for your home: First, make sure the lamp you buy goes with the style and ambience of your room.

Are You Ready to Spring into Summer?

Companions

Buying a Victorian looking floor lamp for a house with a modern décor theme is a complete no-no, even if you are getting the lamp for free. Take your time and choose a lamp that will enhance the décor of your home. Floor lamps can last a life time. If you find a good looking lamp, make sure that it is of a good quality and is durable. Check how sturdy or heavy it is and if the finishing and painting are smooth or not. A floor lamp should be heavy enough not to fall to the ground with the slightest nudge or shove. Most floor lamps come as a combination of a separate lamp base and lamp shade. Choose your lamp shade carefully, and if possible, look at it in daylight before buying it. Your floor lamp will act like any other show piece in your room during day time, so it is imperative that it looks good in daylight while it is not in use. Needless to say, choose a lamp shade that complements the colors of your room. Another important thing that will determine how good or bad your lamp looks is the kind of bulb you use in your floor lamp. While the brightness or dimness of the bulb should be based on the amount of area that you want your floor lamp to light and the purpose for which you need the light, it is important to note that the bulb should be dim enough for the lamp

We are well into spring now! The flowers are blooming, the grass is growing, and the sun occasionally shines for an entire day. It is almost time for summer! Long days full of sun and fun! Before the heat of summer is upon us, it is wise to check on a couple things. First, is your air conditioning system ready for the summer? Preventative Maintenance is the best way to find out if your system is ready for the heavy work load it will face when the temperatures get over 80 and the humidity stays high. It is not fun to be forced to call down the list looking for a service technician who can come do an emergency repair because something failed and it is 95 degrees in the house. It is much better to be proactive, hence the “prevent” part of Preventative Maintenance. At Servco, we offer a Preventative Planned Maintenance program where we check the system as recommended by the manufacturer so the unit will last as long as it possibly can. Call Servco at 541-451-5090 and ask to have your system serviced or maintained. We will send one of our highly skilled technicians to clean the system, check all the electrical connections, change the filter, make sure the condensate is clear, check the outdoor unit, and verify refrigerant pressures. Our technician will point out any problem areas, maybe the rhododendron planted by the outdoor unit needs trimmed back. Perhaps

there is a storage area by the indoor unit that contains flammable items. Maybe a component is showing signs of failure or potential failure and may need replaced soon. We try to inform our customers as to any issues they might not be aware of. The second thing to check on: Are the ducts clean? During the heat of summer, the building gets closed up to keep the heat out, but this means if the ducts are dirty, the dust or pollen trapped in the ductwork is redistributed to all the rooms of the house. Respiratory problems are intensified during hot summer months and a thorough duct cleaning will remove the pollutants to help protect residents of the house from allergens. We have nicknamed the Servco Duct Cleaning Truck our V-8 Vacuum. It is very powerful and effectively cleans the entire duct system. It has a large suction tube which hooks up to the indoor unit ductwork. There are several tools that are used to scrub the inside of the ducts. Brushes, pressurized air, and sanitizers are all used at different points during the duct cleaning to ensure all the dirt is removed from the ductwork. If you are considering adding air conditioning to your home, be sure to consider the ductless mini-split heat pump. Also, verify that anyone who works on your house is a licensed, bonded contractor before you allow them to perform any repairs. And feel free to call us if you have any questions!

The more I talk to youth, the more I am convinced that we need to reach out to the next generation. A couple of recent talk shows I host on KGAL bring that to light. I recently interviewed several students from Russia, and representatives of the Boys and Girls club. People are people, wherever you go. People need love, and young people need the wisdom and mentoring of reputable adults. Young people from Russia have many of the same dreams, concerns, hopes, and desires that we do here in the United States. They want to grow up, get a job, get married, and have a family. It may surprise many older folks, but young people really do care what you think. They have questions and many realize they don’t have all the answers. I remember another recent show interviewing Vernon Tunnell, who came out of retirement to volunteer with the CASA program (court appointed special advocates) to help a young girl who reached out because she knew he cared. Vernon did not say that he was too busy or too old or any of scores of other reasons. He helped. He came out of retirement to help her, and he didn’t stop. He is still volunteering for CASA. He was honored recently at the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Awards. Vernon says he is just a “crazy old man who loves kids.” Vernon, I wish everyone was as crazy as you. If that were the case, we would have fewer kids on the downward spiral to crime, teenage pregnancy, and addictive behavior. The next time a young person asks for help, and if there is any possible way you can engage, get involved and stay involved. We change society for the better, one person at a time. I’m Dave Adams with TJN The Jesus Network, and that is how we change the planet.

Memories The Kettle Family For a ten year stretch between 1947 and 1957, Universal Pictures made a mint off of a film series about a humorous rural family named the Kettles. It all started with Betty MacDonald’s book, “The Egg and I.” In 1947, Universal picked up the film rights to the popular book about a city couple, played by Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert, who decide to move to Washington State to start a chicken farm. Their neighbors happen to be Ma and Pa Kettle, played by Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride, and their numerous broods of children of all ages. Ma Kettle was a boisterous lady who always managed to keep things going no matter what the situation. Pa Kettle was a lazy, shiftless, type of guy who would always put off until tomorrow what he could be doing today. Marjorie Main was a busy actress during the 1930’s and 40’s and was on loan to Universal from her contract at MGM, where she was popular in Judy Garland musicals and many other films co-starring with everyone from James Cagney to John Wayne. Percy Kilbride had been playing in a number of films at Universal and other studios including Rogers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair” at 20th Century Fox, and being the foil for Universals comedy team Olsen and

Johnson. The Kettle characters were so popular in “The Egg and I” that Universal quickly spun them off in their own series of films, making one a year. Rick The movies had Rogers great plots ranging Movies from Pa Kettle and DVDs finding Uranium on his farm to visits to New York, Paris, and Waikiki. After the eighth film in the series, Percy Kilbride dropped out of the series. The ninth film, “The Kettles in the Ozarks,” found Pa missing, with Ma and the kids visiting a hillbilly cousin. Pa was back in the final movie, “The Kettles on Old MacDonald’s Farm.” Percy Kilbride was replaced in this final Kettle outing by actor Parker Fennely, best known as the TV spokesman for Pepperage Farm products in the 1960’s and 70’s. This is the movie with an Albany, Oregon, connection. In the story, the Kettles go to a lumberjack show and we get to see clips of Universal Newsreel footage of one of the last World Championship Timber Carnivals held at the old Waverly Lake location before it was moved to Timber Linn Park. Now the good news. You can relive all ten of the Kettle adventures on DVD! They are available from all of the usual internet sources.

Uglies

by Scott Westerfield Tally Youngblood is an Ugly. Taught from birth that her natural state is ugly, she can’t wait until her sixteenth birthday, when she gets the surgery to make her a Pretty: perfect skin, sculpted bone structure, large eyes, full lips, approved coloration of hair, eyes, and skin. What she doesn’t know, however, is that the surgery also alters the brain, making all Pretties concerned only about a few things: their looks (of course), partying, and the latest technology. Outside of the City where this society exists, a small band of people have escaped the system. They try to recruit teenagers before they have the surgery, as they look for a cure to the brain alterations. Unlike the Pretties, these people—the Smokies—have to use old technology: they actually use fire to heat and cook; they sew their own clothes (some of which are made from dead animal skin—gross), etc. Tally gets drawn into the Smokies’ camp, and eventually must choose between the easy, if thoughtless, lifestyle of the Pretties, and the hard, but free life of the Smokies. The book covers many of the usual themes for teen fiction: a society with too much control and a teenager who can change the world by just being true to herself. Westerfield is very successful in

following some bad decisions Tally makes to their logical, if unfortunate, ends. Just as the teens are our time for learning all the meanings of responsibility, Tally Scott cannot escape the Givens, consequences of her Browsers Bookstores, actions. Despite an adventurous plot, this and fellow can be a sobering reviewer, book. daughter, My 11-year-old Amanda daughter says “I Givens really enjoyed this book. I like how Tally makes good choices. Tally also is realistic because she feels guilt for betraying her friends. Westerfield created a society that was believable and not too complicated. The detailed descriptions of the city and the people in it were interesting. I really liked the character Shay (Tally’s friend) because she is independent and believes what she wants, even when everyone around her thinks differently. I liked the theme of this book too--thinking what you want and making your own choices. The end has a twist and a cliffhanger, so you have to read the next book to find out what happens. The next book, Pretties, also has an interesting ending. If you read Uglies, you have to (and will want to) read the rest of the trilogy.” Remember, save your receipts when shopping at Browsers Bookstores in Albany and Corvallis for your favorite participating Points for Profit non-profit organization.

Manager’s Corner By Kathy Dennis, Director of Points for Profit Q: We have several businesses that support our organization that aren’t a part of Points for Profit. Would it be within the rules for us to contact our donor base and let them know that by sending in copies of their receipts or year-end totals it could help us earn funds without any additional dollars out of pocket? We know there is an exclusivity rule so we wanted to be certain before reaching out. A: GREAT question! You can absolutely reach out to any business or person! In fact we have businesses that support Points for Profit non-profit organizations already! Most send reports in at yearend with their totals and tell us which non-profit they want to support! It really is a great way to not only support their favorite non-profit organization but the local business and the community! So reach out to all and let’s keep the momentum going!

Santiam Place owner Sally Skaggs meets with visitors at the recent Lebanon Biz Expo.

Santiam Place Wedding and Event Hall By Rick Rogers There is a place in Lebanon that is becoming known throughout the valley as a wonderful venue for holding weddings, birthday and anniversary parties, family gatherings, and any variety of public events. That place is the Santiam Place Wedding and Event hall located at 139 Main St. in downtown Lebanon. The hall is a former church that offers inside and outside areas for just about any type of special event. An added benefit is that Santiam Place is one of our newest Points for Profit business partners, meaning that your rental receipts convert into real mega-points for your favorite participating non-profit organization. If your family is planning a wedding, owner Sally Skaggs says the chapel offers seating for up to one-

hundred guests. The banquet hall can offer seating for up to sixty people and self-catering is allowed. Outside, the enclosed lawn and garden offers space for up to three-hundred people with special places for photo opportunities. When planning your event, Santiam Place can provide tables and chairs, a kitchen, a wedding arch with greenery and tiny white lights, a bride’s dressing room, and even a basic sound system. Throughout the year, you will find that Santiam Place has a full schedule of events that are open to the public including flea markets, craft shows, lectures and presentations, and much more. Rates are reasonable and they are ready to work hard to accommodate your needs. For more information you can call Sally Skaggs at 541-259-4255; or go online to www.santiamplace.com.

screening! So why the big push to get America’s youth HPV vaccinations? While there are some who believe that these drugs are the answer to cervical cancer despite the lack of evidence, the main reason is likely money. Merck and GlaxoSmithKline are behind the major lobbyist movements to increase HPV vaccination and even mandate the treatment. Mandatory vaccinations mean that the government contracts with drug manufacturers to develop these vaccines. In 2011, for example, the government awarded $5.7 billion for the manufacture of children’s vaccines. Is that motivation enough? Is that a good enough reason to vaccinate a 4 year old that is not likely to be sexually active and at risk for HPV for many years? Sexual activity is, after all, how HPV is spread. The fact that there is no long term data as to the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines means that this information will come as our children are vaccinated. Are you willing to have your son or daughter be part of the experiment? Because that’s what it really is. hepatitis vaccines must be given as a three shot regimen, preferably over the course of six months. However, the three shots can be given on an accelerated schedule in a four week time period, if needed. Remember, the body needs about two weeks to develop reliable immunity after being vaccinated, so be sure to factor this into your travel preparations. If you need help locating your immunization history or deciding which vaccines are right for you, stop by Rice’s Pharmacy. You do not need a doctor’s prescription to have vaccines administered at the pharmacy. We also carry anti-malarials and typhoid vaccine. Happy travels!

Spring Pruning By Karen Rogers

Spring is so fine! I enjoy all the multi-colored flowering shrubs so common here. Where I grew up, in New Jersey, there were rhododendrons, but they were, for some reason, mostly a rather drab, mauve color. So were the azaleas. Needless to say, I was blown away by the banks of colorful shrubs at Oregon State. Now, having enjoyed them, it’s time to tend to them. This is the best time to lop off those finished blossom heads so that the shrub gets a good head start on next years flowers. Rhodies and azaleas are easy, just remove the finished flowers and shape to your own taste. Our camellia is a tremendous grower- every year Rick fills an entire yard waste bin with its trimmings. We missed Lilacs waiting to benifit from pruning. a year, once, and it got real rambunctious with the driveway. Lilacs benefit from a good trimming. I prefer a nice compact bush to a tall and leggy one, and besides, the flowers are easier to reach. You can also propagate them easily from the green wood. I need to prune my rosemary as soon as it’s done blooming. It is about twenty-five years old and it has a tendency to bully the thyme and chives. You have to chop your way to the back door. I guess that’s a good thing, because rosemary was believed to deter evil from entering dwellings, when planted by doorways. This one could actually enforce it!

Praying Mantis The Praying Mantis is a general predator of most pest insects, mites, eggs, or any insect in reach (both invasive and beneficial). Each egg case contains approximately Word 200-baby mantis. From Use 3 cases per 5,000 square WILCO feet or 10-100 cases per year Brian per acre. Attach Coons, to twigs, leaves, Wilco fences, and other vegetation. Do not place on ground, as they become easy prey for ants. Releases can begin after the last frost and continue through summer. The Praying mantis is a most interesting and enjoyable beneficial insect to have around the garden and farm. It is the only known insect that can turn its head and look over its shoulder. Mantises have enormous appetites, eating various aphids, leafhoppers, mosquitoes, caterpillars, and other soft-bodied insects when young. Later, they will eat larger insects, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and other pest insects. From birth, mantises are predators. The nymphs immediately begin attacking leafhoppers, aphids, and even small flies. A healthy organic garden relies on a delicate balance of predator and prey species. Beneficial mantises, lacewings, and ladybugs are vital to keeping plant damaging insects under control. They prefer a warm location and will hatch after the last frost and 10 to 15 days of warm weather.

bugs, leafhoppers, mites, and various types of soft-bodied insects. Ladybugs, also called lady beetles or ladybird beetles, are a very beneficial group of insects. Ladybugs are natural enemies of many insect pests and it has been demonstrated that a single ladybug may consume as many as 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. Ladybug adults have a very characteristic convex, hemispherical to oval body shape. Ladybugs are among the most familiar beetles, easily recognized by their round, often spotted bodies, less than 1/16-3/8” long. Most are shiny red, orange, or yellow with black markings, or black with red or yellow markings. Lady beetles are known primarily as predators of aphids (plant lice), but they prey also on many other pests such as soft-scale insects, mealy bugs, spider mites, and eggs of the Colorado potato beetle and European corn borer. Beneficial Soil Nematodes Beneficial Nematodes naturally occur in soil and are used to control soil pest insects and whenever larvae or grubs are present. Beneficial nematodes only attack soil dwelling insects and leave plants and earthworms alone. The beneficial nematodes enter the larva via mouth, anus, or respiratory openings and start to feed. This causes the soil dwelling insect dies within a few days. Beneficial nematodes are a totally safe biological control in pest insects. The Beneficial nematodes are so safe the EPA has waived the registration requirements for application. The Nematodes are effective against grubs and the larval or grub stage of Japanese Beetles, Northern Masked Chafer, European Chafer, Rose Chafer, Fly larvae, Oriental Beetles, June Beetles, Flea beetles, Bill-bugs, Cut-worms, Army worms, Black Vine Weevils, Strawberry Root Weevils, Fungus Gnats, Sciarid larvae, Sod Web-worms, Girdler, Citrus

A Tale of Retention Just a few months ago I received a panicked call from a long time friend and former business associate; two of his employees had given their notice. In preparation for their vacancy, he realized the amount of work that would have to be covered for even one of them until the vacancy was filled was staggering for his small workforce. Adding insult to injury, he saw numbers from a recent study by the Center for American Progress on what it actually costs an employer to replace an employee. Even lower paid employees earning $25,000 a year typically have a replacement cost in time, training, and cost to the employer of about one-fifth of that annual salary, which is a significant cost to a small business. As he and his staff had begun to prepare for the departure of his two employees, he realized those numbers were not unrealistic when he considered the amount of time his staff was spending to prep and cover their positions in the meantime, as well as the amount of time they were spending on prep and execution of the hiring process up to and including interviewing and hiring. Based on the

interviews, he realized he would have significant training time for anyone he hired. The IRS Fresh Start program makes it easier for taxpayers to pay back taxes and avoid tax liens. Even small business taxpayers may benefit from Fresh Start. Here are three important features of the Fresh Start program: • Tax Liens. The Fresh Start program increased the amount that taxpayers can owe before the IRS generally will file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien. That amount is now $10,000. However, in some cases, the IRS may still file a lien notice on amounts less than $10,000. When a taxpayer meets certain requirements and pays off their tax debt, the IRS may now withdraw a filed Notice of Federal Tax Lien. Taxpayers must request this in writing using Form 12277, Application for Withdrawal. Some taxpayers may qualify to have their lien notice withdrawn if they are paying their tax debt through a Direct Debit installment agreement. Taxpayers also need to request this in writing by using Form 12277. If a taxpayer defaults on the Direct Debit Installment Agreement, the IRS may file a new Notice of Federal Tax Lien and resume collection actions. • Installment Agreements. The Fresh Start program expanded access to streamlined installment agreements.

Bug Hunting Now that spring has started here in the valley, grass is growing, flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and bees are busy in the fields. If you look, you will find that new life is popping up all around us this time of year. Spring is an ideal time of the year to take your kids on a bug hunt. You need not go far or have lots of equipment to set out on this little adventure, only a sense of curiosity and a small area outdoors. A bug hunt can keep a child busy for hours and be educational as well. While it’s true not all kids like bugs, going on a bug hunt can still be fun. You may think insects are ugly, or even scary, but once you start taking a closer look, you may find insects to be rather interesting and some even beautiful. Here are a few tips on making a bug hunt a success: Bring the right tools like a small container to put your insects in. Small containers are great if you want to house your collected bugs to observe closer. Take along some tweezers as some insects may be too small or have the ability to pinch or bite if handled. A magnifying glass is always handy and a butterfly

Driving when you are a little tired isn’t that big of a deal, right? Actually, it is. A new study shows that driving while you are tired is just as dangerous as driving drunk. Many times, individuals who are driving while fatigued are unaware they are tired or may be so used to driving tired that they do not recognize the danger. The reduced alertness brought on by fatigue makes these drivers a danger to themselves and others. Driving while fatigued is so dangerous that states have started to pass legislation to punish those who drive while fatigued. The first law of this kind was passed in 2003 and is named Maggie’s Law. Maggie’s Law originated in 1997 from a traffic crash, in which 20-year-old Maggie McDonald was killed when a driver crossed three lanes of traffic and hit her car head on. The driver later admitted that he had not slept in 30 hours. As awareness grows about the dangers of driving while fatigued, it is important that we make sure that we are not letting ourselves or the ones we love drive while they are tired. One of the primary causes of fatigued driving is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing-related sleep disorder that causes

brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. These pauses in breathing can last at least 10 seconds or more and can occur up to 400 times a night. Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that often goes unrecognized and undiagnosed. Because sleep apnea affects your sleep, it also affects your daytime alertness and performance. Many people who have sleep apnea report falling asleep at red lights or having to pull over and take a nap because they are literally unable to stay awake. Currently, sleep apnea is detected by physicians when patients complain that they are having trouble sleeping at night. It is estimated that over 20 million Americans suffer from the disorder. Sleep apnea testing can currently be tested in a sleep lab or also in the patient’s home with a home sleep testing device. If left unchecked, sleep apnea can cause hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity, along with a major loss in quality of life. Many times the symptoms of sleep apnea are very difficult to notice. If you believe that you may suffer from sleep apnea or would just like to get tested for peace of mind, please ask your physician about sleep testing.

Pets and Poisons By Eric Glaze Albany Animal Hospital

Recently, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal’s (ASPCA) Animal Poison Control Center posted a summary of the 180,000 cases in which pets were exposed to poisonous substances over the course of last year. The following are the top five groups of poisons. Prescription human medication made up 25,000 cases. The top three types were heart medication (blood pressure pills), antidepressants, and prescription pain medications like opioids. The second group of poisonings included the over-the-counter human medications. Some of these cases were accidental poisonings where well meaning owners gave there painful pets nonsteroidal medications like Ibuprofen. This drug is very toxic to dogs, even at low doses. The drug Tylenol is also very toxic to cats. Other poisonings included nutraceutical products. One such supplement is garlic capsules which can cause severe anemia in dogs. Insecticides made up a significant proportion of calls especially with regards to cats. The insecticides in these cases involved certain flea products made for dogs that are exposed to cats either by allowing the cat to contact the dog shortly after application or by deliberately applying dog flea medicine to a cat. The flea products that can be extremely toxic to cats contain pyrethroids. These are potent synthetic versions of pyrethrin which is derived from Chrysanthemum plants. Even pyrethrin in large enough quantities can have toxic effects in the cat. Cats that have been exposed should be bathed immediately with Dawn dish soap and taken to the vet as quickly as

possible. Signs range from vomiting and decreased appetite to uncontrollable muscle tremors and seizures. With prompt treatment the prognosis is actually fair to good. Death can occur without intervention. The fourth group of cases is comprised of the veterinary medications. Veterinary products made up about 6% of cases. Both over-the-counter medications like “doggy aspirin” and prescription products were included. Certain products like the nonsteroidal drug Rimadyl are flavored and dogs will readily eat them if they are not stored in a safe place. Tea tree oil is a very popular over-the-counter product used in many topical medications. Cats are particularly sensitive and dogs are too. If applied in large enough quantities, a dog can become very weak, particularly in the hind end, and have difficulty walking. Most veterinarians are not a big fan of this product. The fifth and final groups are the household products. Around 10,000 calls regarded exposure to these products. Some of the interesting cases include dogs eating fire logs (they apparently like the taste) and cats ingesting bleach. Believe it or not, many cats really enjoy the smell and taste of bleach. Included in the group of household products were also household plants. The ASPCA website has an extensive list of toxic household plants. In conclusion, if you think your pet has ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center’s 24 hour hotline at (888) 426-4435. in merger and field of membership criteria, and expanded member services characterized the 1980s. High interest rates and unemployment in the early ‘80s brought supervisory changes and insurance losses. With the Share Insurance Fund experiencing stress, the credit union community called on Congress to approve a plan to recapitalize the Fund. In 1985, federally insured credit unions recapitalized the NCUSIF by depositing 1 percent of their shares into the Share Insurance Fund. Backed by the “full faith and credit of the United States Government,” the fully-capitalized National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund has “fail safe” features. Since recapitalization, the NCUA Board has only charged credit unions a premium when the Fund dropped to a 1.25 percent equity ratio. During the 1990s and into the 21st century, credit unions have been healthy and growing. Credit union failures remain low and the Share Insurance Fund maintains a healthy equity level. The original intent of Congress was to create a system of not-for-profit cooperatives that promote thrift and thwart usury.

Pets...You Gotta Love Them! After 40 years of owning my own carpet cleaning service, it still amazes me how much love and affection people lavish on their pets. My favorite has always been large dogs, but they come in all sizes, from the wonderful Mastiffs and Newfoundlands, to the tiniest tea cup poodles. Add to this mix the unlimited varieties of cats, birds, ferrets, lizards, fish, turtles, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, snakes, frogs, salamanders, even tarantulas! Yes, I have seen all these types of beloved pets in my career! And all pets have one thing in common: hey all have accidents, often on your carpets or furniture.

So, what can you do when the inevitable accident happens? First, don’t lose your cool. Carpets and furniture are pretty resilient with most pet stains, as long Char & as you don’t add to Paul the problem. Usually, pets have accidents for the following reasons: • Age: Younger pets haven’t ‘figured it out’ yet and older pets (like us) can become incontinent. • Illness: Often, medicines can cause pets to lose control unexpectedly. • Attitude: Need I remind you that most pets think they are a very special member of the family? • Neglect: Too often our pets don’t get the attention they need and deserve.

My mission is to help the wives and moms in this area to love their husbands, kids, and pets. Yes, kids and husbands have accidents too. Remember, You Deserve A Cleaner, Healthier Home!

Deltiology is one of the world’s largest collecting hobbies, rivaling only coin and stamp collecting. Deltiology is the official name for collecting postcards. Postcards cover so many topics that almost anyone can find a subject to get interested in. History, art, holidays, cars, military, famous people, buildings, sports, and animals are just a small sampling of the topics you will find portrayed on postcards. My personal collection consists mostly of postcards with children as the subject. Postcards have been printed on many different materials, including leather, metal, wood, plastic, linens and even fine silk. Some were made from actual photographs while others were hand painted or hand-made. The earliest postcards date back to the 1870’s. Postcards can be categorized into five different types: view cards, greeting cards, historical cards, art cards, and photographic cards. View cards give a historical reference to buildings, towns, streets, bridges, etc. It was common for people to collected cards from the places they traveled to as well as from their own home towns. Greeting cards included holidays such as Christmas and Easter as well as other special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and new arrivals. Historical cards are printed to remember events such as war, politics, social problems, disasters, parades, and expositions. This type of card was often made from authentic

photographs. Art cards covered special interest subjects so much fewer were produced and they generally demanded higher prices. During the early 1900’s, postcards were so popular that the market drew in some of the best artist of that period. A German publisher, during the same period, produced a series of “Old Master” art reproductions. The quality of the artists and the printing processes produced some of the most amazing mini master pieces to be collected today. Photographic cards were, as the name suggest, made from real photographs. Sometimes the photo cards were hand tinted in great detail with stunning colors producing some of the most beautiful cards produced. I love collecting postcards because I can keep so much beauty in such a small space. Looking through my postcard album filled with cheerful little children always makes me smile.
