Turkey Time The annual Veteran’s Day parade winds its way through downtown Albany.
This platter, perfect for serving your Thanksgiving turkey, can be found at the Albany Antique Mall.

by Karen Rogers
Turkey is so closely associated with the Thanksgiving holiday that they’re practically inseparable. How did that come to pass? Turkeys, though plentiful, probably were not served at the first Thanksgiving. Chief Massasoit of the Wampanoag tribe was invited and showed up with an entourage of ninety members. They also provided five deer for the feast. Thomas Jefferson had a recipe for turkey, but it was boiled and there was no mention of the holiday in his cook book. Ben Franklin thought the turkey, versus the eagle, “A more respectable Bird and a true original Native of America.” By the 1860s it was the centerpiece of Thanksgiving menus in many period cook books. During the Depression, my own GreatAunt, Kate Dunn, actually raised turkeys. My maternal Grandma farmed ducks and geese; the paternal one, chickens. My own mom had chickens. I’m surprised I don’t have feathers! Today’s bird is usually a Broad-Breasted White — an artificial inbred creature that dates to the 1960s. Prior to then, we feasted on Naragansetts, Standard Bronzes and Jersey Buffs. They are closer to the native species, are more flavorful, and require much less care. These varieties and others like the Bourbon Red and White Holland are available from specialty sources. Now for a shameless plug — this month’s High Points recipe for Barley Casserole is great with turkey!!!
Veterans,
Defending Our Freedom by Rick Rogers
On the second weekend in November military veterans from around the West coast will be coming to Albany for, what is billed as, the largest Veterans Day celebration west of the Mississippi. The theme this year is: “Veterans, Defending Our Freedom”. The special salute includes a delicious dinner compliments of Jacopetti’s Catering and a dance following the dinner featuring Bullit. The event is free and open to all veterans, active duty military personnel and their families including children. Additional sponsors for the yearly salute to veterans include: Affordable Appliance, Albany Antique Mall, ATI Wah Chang, Costco, Custom Eyes, Heritage Mall, KGAL/KSHO radio, Sign Express, Tree of Life Christian Stores, U.S. Tactical Supply and Western Beverage. Why Not Wheat?
A common recommendation I make in my practice is that people stop eating wheat (even the whole grain stuff). This is met with plenty of crazy stares and gasps. Even some dieticians and other health care professionals scoff at this idea that anybody would ever want to avoid eating wheat. There are a few simple facts that make avoiding wheat a sensible health choice and may limit your risk for diseases such as obesity, hypertension or diabetes. In this article I’m just going to lay out the facts about wheat and let you draw your own conclusion. FACT #1 WHEAT CONTAINS A TOXIC SUBSTANCE – Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA) is a protein in wheat that is described as an anti-nutrient. An anti-nutrient is a compound that interferes with the absorption of nutrients. WGA binds with sugars on the surface of gastrointestinal (GI) tract cells causing damage and dysfunction. The lining of the GI tract is bound together with tight junctions between cells creating a natural barrier that keeps undesirable and undigested substances out of the blood stream. WGA loosens these junctions and can create a “leaky gut” which can lead to allergic or immune responses in the body. WGA also blocks receptor for insulin,
increasing resistance to insulin and limiting the ability to regulate blood sugar. It also blocks Vitamin D receptors on cells and produces inflammatory chemicals. What kind of wheat contains WGA? All kinds of wheat, Dr. Jason even sprouted wheat, Young contain WGA. The concentration of WGA is highest in whole wheat. So the trade-off for more fiber and a lower glycemic effect in whole wheat is that there is more toxic WGA exposure. Wheat is also high in gluten which many people are sensitive to without knowing it and is completely intolerable for a growing population of people with Celiac Disease. FACT #2 WHEAT IS NOT VERY NUTRIENT DENSE A common misperception of wheat is that it is very nutritious. Compared to other foods this is not the case at all when you compare it to other foods. Nutrient density is the amount of nutrients a food delivers per calorie it provides. For example 1 cup of cooked spinach is 41 calories but deliver 23 different nutrients including a full day’s worth of vitamins A and K. By comparison 1 cup of cooked whole wheat is 151 calories and only delivers 4 nutrients none of which meet the full recommended Wheat continued on page 12

What is OAB?
One of the top ten chronic conditions in females aged 45-64yrs. is overactive bladder, or OAB. Overactive bladder is characterized by the frequent urgent need to urinate, which may be accompanied by urinary leakage. Women often assume the condition is just part of the aging process and do not seek treatment; however, it is a good idea to speak with a health care provider if you suspect you have OAB. The symptoms of OAB may mimic those of a urinary tract infection or diabetes and it is important to get the proper treatment. They can also let you know if your OAB might respond to a surgical procedure, or a prescription medication. The exact cause of overactive bladder is unknown. We do know that women with OAB experience a contraction of the bladder muscle when urine flows into the bladder. It is this muscular contraction that creates the sense of urgency and may cause urine to be “leaked” from the bladder. At first glance, it seems logical to combat overactive bladder by limiting fluid intake. However, this often makes OAB symptoms worse. As the urine becomes more concentrated, it may cause greater irritation to the bladder, triggering more spasms. Limiting fluid intake may also predispose one to developing a urinary tract infection.

The key to dealing with OAB is reducing the frequency and force of the involuntary bladder muscle contractions. There are several nonPamela medical strategies that Becker, RpH may bring relief: avoid Rice’s certain foods, lose Pharmacy weight, stop smoking, & Gifts and “retrain” the bladder. A “Pill Box Foods that are Pharmacy” known to irritate the bladder lining are: coffee, tea (caffeinated beverages in general), artificial sweeteners, alcoholic beverages, sodas, citrus, tomatoes, chocolate, and spices. While it may be difficult to completely eliminate the listed items from your diet, reducing your intake may alleviate some of the triggers of OAB. Bladder retraining involves resisting a bathroom trip despite the sense of urgency. The goal is a sort of mind-over-matter approach to lengthening the amount of time between bathroom visits by learning to consciously relax the bladder muscle. Doing exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor can aid in this process. Until recently, medications designed to treat OAB were only available by prescription. The FDA has now approved the Oxytrol Patch for sale over the counter. Oxytrol works by relaxing the bladder muscle, making it less susceptible to

Credit Unions: More Idea Accessible Now than Ever
Did you know you are probably qualified to join a local credit union just based on where you live or work? Once upon a time most, if not all, credit unions had a field of membership restricted to a particular affiliation with a business or group. Those types of credit unions still exist, but increasingly you’ll find communitychartered credit unions who welcome in those who live, work, or worship in the county that their charter covers. You can find out membership requirements simply by looking up a particular institution on their website or by making a quick phone call. The best way to find a good place to bank is to ask where your friends or family bank and if they receive good service along with the products they need. Many people choose which financial institution they do their business with based on convenience - location of branches and ATM’s, business hours, etc. Large national banks will always hold advantages over credit unions based on number of branches which are often nationwide. Most credit unions (with a few exceptions) tend to be regional in scope so they simply don’t have thousands of branches to offer their members. But to compensate for these perceived
competitive disadvantages, your credit union may be on one if not two national networks that offer you national access: shared branching and the Co-Op ATM network. Darin Shared Klarr Branching: SELCO Participating Community institutions (again, you can find out if your CU Branch credit union is on this Manager network by calling or visiting their website) allow their members to do transactions in the lobby of other credit unions and vice versa. All that is needed is current photo ID and your account number. Co-Op ATM network: You’ll also be able to use any credit union ATM nationwide without service charges. Credit Unions have an ATM locator feature on their website which will allow you to designate a particular city, state or zip code to find out what ATM locations are available (for either withdrawals and/or deposits, which will be specified). Now is a great time to explore your banking options. Just because you’ve “always done” your banking somewhere doesn’t mean you still have to if you aren’t receiving good service or are paying fees that you don’t agree with. Don’t be afraid of looking at a smaller, local institution if you like the idea of “shopping local.” You won’t have to sacrifice convenience!

Lopi Woodstoves — Beautiful and Efficient
Travel
By Michelle Johnson SERVCO 541-451-5090
Energy Independence. The expense of heating your home with oil, gas or electricity just keeps going up. Lopi’s radiant and convective wood stoves give you even, penetrating heat that comfortably warms every room in your home for a fraction of what you’d pay for standard utilities. Lopi stoves feature a large capacity convection chamber which enhances the heat transfer by gently circulating heated air to adjoining rooms, while still offering radiant heat that warms the room and the objects in it. The advanced combustion allows wood to burn longer and more efficiently. You will use less wood, but gain more heat.
Cheer
Value
Why heat with wood? Nothing heats like wood. Lopi wood stoves and fireplace inserts warm the coldest days, brighten the darkest nights and fill your home with the gentle, radiant heat only wood can produce. With styles and installation choices for every room in your home, America’s favorite fire helps you declare yourself
freefrom high heating bills.
Curious for Curios
Curio cabinets have become a delight in themselves as they showcase your favorite things and mementos to friends and family, keep all your dear treasures in one place to admire them in wonderment every day, or protect your growing collection of porcelain dolls from your 5-year old. Curio cabinets started as places to keep curios - defined in the dictionary as curious or unusual objects of art or knickknacks and whatnots that are perhaps worthy of collecting because of their oddity. Nowadays, however, you can use curio cabinets for anything: • Show off your family’s sporting interests by displaying your son’s bowling trophies next to your husband’s autographed baseballs. • House your priceless family heirlooms - such as, great Grandma’s turquoise and silver comb, Grandpa’s golden pen, mum’s old sapphire brooch which you wore on your wedding day, and your son’s first baby photo. • Or perhaps, protect from dust and grime the brass alto saxophone that you know you’ll learn to play one day in your retirement years.
Companions
Care For The Environment Did you know an old, inefficient wood stove can generate as much as three pounds of pollutants into the air each day? Lopi stoves are E.P. A. certified and emit as little as 1.9 grams of particulates per hour, thus reducing pollutants by over 95 percent. By using a Lopi stove, you’re keeping the air in your neighborhood clean and breathable. And because wood is a renewable resource, Lopi stoves are so efficient they use substantially less wood than other stoves to get the same amount of heat output. All Lopi wood stoves have the option of adding an Outside Air Kit, which allows the stove to pull combustion air from outside rather than from inside the home. This prevents the stove from pulling in and removing the already heated room air for combustion and protects your indoor air quality. Stop in today to visit the Lopi showroom at SERVCO at 1200 Grant Street in Lebanon, Visit the SERVCO website at lebanonservco.com or call us at 541-451-5090.

But how do you choose the curio cabinet that’s just right for you? Ask yourself the following questions and find out how.

Reviews
Tips on how to choose a curio cabinet 1. The first question you should ask when buying a curio cabinet is: What kind of curios will I put in it? If it is a tall brass alto saxophone, then you need to get a tall, traditional curio cabinet with fitted glass doors to keep the dust out and with removable glass shelves to make room for your favorite musical instrument. 2. How much light is there at the spot where you are going to put your curio cabinet? Is it in the sunroom with plenty of natural light or is it in a dark corner of the house? If the latter then you need an illuminated cabinet to brighten the corner as well as provide accent lighting to your displays. 3. The other question to ask is - Do you want to match the look of your curio cabinet with the other furniture in the room? • If you want to maintain a traditional look, then you might want to choose from grand oldfashioned designs with beveling, hand-carved details and dark timber finishes. • If the room is contemporary, then you might want the clean Curio Cabinet continued on page 11

Parnell Person awaits his next Customer at his shop in downtown Albany.
Haircuts Can Earn Points By Rick Rogers Parnell Person has been cutting hair at his Personal Barber Shop, 335 W. Second Avenue in downtown Albany, since 1970. Earlier this year Parnell joined the Points for Profit program supporting a wide variety of our non-profit organizations. When you get your hair cut make sure you ask Parnell for a Points for Profit verification card and then turn it in to your preferred participating non-profit organization. Parnell was born in South Dakota but moved to the Albany-Jefferson area with his family in 1937 where he attended public and private schools. He worked for 14 years in the timber industry before he started cutting hair for family and friends in 1957. As Parnell tells it, it was a series of life-changing events and divine guidance from God that led him to
attend and graduate from the Salem Barber College in 1967. He then cut hair at the now-defunct Adair Air Force Station at the old Camp Adair site, and in Medford, before opening a barber shop at the current Albany location in 1970. 43 year later, he is still there. Now at 80 years of age, he still has customers lined up in his shop waiting for their turn in the barber’s chair. Earlier this year, he added a second part-time barber to ease the load a bit. Parnell says he thinks about retirement every once in a while, but not anytime soon. We at Points for Profit are proud to have Parnell and his Personal Barber Shop in the program. It’s one of those places where you can get a great haircut while talking about world events, religious experiences, and about anything else you can think of. As Parnell might say......”Next!”

Game Trust….How to Achieve It and Keep it! Trust can be defined as “the trait of believing in the honesty and reliability of others” My definition….you are meeting a new service provider at your front door for the first time. Do you feel suspicious, nervous, and uneasy (should I let this person into my home!)? That’s distrust! Or do you feel a calm assurance, knowing that your needs will be met or perhaps exceeded? That is trust!! How does one achieve that wonderful feeling of trust in such a situation? You could follow your instincts (trust your gut)… helpful but by no means foolproof. Or you can do your homework…trust is often a result of what we have learned about someone or something. At Rainbow Carpet Cleaning we hope you will come to trust us because…. • Someone you already trust has given us a great review and recommendation. Don’t we all prefer to meet new service providers who we know has already exceeded one of our friend’s expectations? • You found our website and enjoyed your experience while browsing and felt like you were informed and educated about what to expect. • You found us in the yellow pages….NOT A GREAT PLACE TO GAIN TRUST IN A BUSINESS! Yellow page ads tend to pit all companies against each other, often emphasizing cost rather than value….which is why I limit my yellow page presence. • You found out about our FREE information line that highlights what to expect from a professional carpet cleaning service as well as voice testimonials’ from a variety of satisfied clients.
Good thru Nov 30, 2013.

The bottom line is…. We are often in the innermost parts of your home and we may see your living areas at their “worst” …after your beloved pet misbehaves….your children use your cosmetics to draw on the carpet or furniture…or your husband ‘forgets’ to take off his greasy boots before he walks on the carpets. We count it an extreme privilege to be able to work for you in your home and that you TRUST US enough to care for whatever cleaning needs you have. We will always work hard to be worthy of your ongoing TRUST!! Remember, You Deserve A Cleaner, Healthier Home!

If the Walls Could Talk Cents
Remodeling does not have to be stressful! Making a change should be fun! Here are a few tips you may want to consider before driving that first nail: Choose the right contractor. Most Rick reputable contractors Pyburn know all the standard Pyburn stuff. Is the contractor licensed and bonded? and Sons What quality of work do Construction they do? Do they have And references? Do they have Remodeling experience in the work you want done? These are important questions you need answers to before you sign on the dotted line. However, you also want a contractor you can communicate with, and get along with, through the entire project. Know the sub-contractors he will be using. You should meet them as well. Have a good contract that spells out exactly what the contractor will be doing and providing. Finally, make sure you know the bottom line. In remodeling, costs can go up based on “unknowns,” once a project starts. Examples are: unexpected dry rot, existing framing issues that need to be corrected, or plumbing and mechanical problems that might need to be corrected, just to name a few. Most of the time “unknowns” are minor, but you might personally add to the cost by upgrading fixtures, floor covering, extra electrical, etc., so budget a little extra. Get as many decisions made as you can before starting your project. Also, get things ordered that might take time to arrive; and, finally, HAVE FUN!

Boxelder Bugs Look for Winter Home If you live in the Willamette Valley then you are no stranger to the Boxelder Bug. This abundant pest has 6 legs, black with reddish markings, a narrow head with long antennae, and often found by the hundreds resting on the warm side of your home. Boxelder bugs get their common name from the fact that they are often found on and around boxelder trees. This species is native to the western states, but can be found from eastern Canada throughout the eastern United States, and west to eastern Nevada wherever boxelder trees are found. The boxelder bug population lives and thrives on maple and seed-bearing boxelder trees during the warmer months where they lay their eggs and feed on leaves, flowers and seeds. Occasionally, they will feed on the fruits of plum and apple trees. In autumn, boxelder bugs become gregarious and congregate on the south side of rocks, trees and buildings where the sun hits. After large masses gather, they migrate to nearby buildings or homes to overwinter. These pests tend to hide in small cracks and crevices in walls to insulate themselves from the cold winter temperatures. In late March to early April, adults leave their overwintering sites to return to their host trees for the warmer
months. Boxelder bugs are not known to bite, but their piercing-sucking mouthparts can occasionally puncture skin, causing a slight Sean irritation and Meiner produce a red spot Healthy similar to a mosquito bite. When crushed Home Pest Control, LLC or handled roughly, (541) 570-0095 boxelder bugs may leave a reddish orange stain from their fecal material that can result in discoloration of curtains, drapes, clothing, etc. In order to prevent boxelder bugs from invading homes, repair holes in window and door screens, seal cracks and crevices with a good quality silicone or siliconelatex caulk, and install door sweeps to all exterior entrances. When attempting to get rid of boxelder bugs that have already entered a home or building, no attempt should be made to kill them in wall voids because dead insect bodies can attract dermestid beetles. Rather, using a vacuum cleaner to remove them may provide temporary relief. The vacuum bag should be removed and discarded or the canister emptied in an outside garbage receptacle to prevent the bugs from escaping into the house again. For professional help in controlling these pests, give Healthy Home Pest Control, LLC a call at 541-570-0095.

Mini Pruning Guide
Business
A good starting point for pruning any plant is to remove dead, diseased, or damaged stems as soon as you see them. Dead stems attract insects and invite diseases to develop. Also remove crossing branches, water sprouts (vigorous upright growing shoots that form on trunks or side branches), and suckers (vigorous shoots that develop near or from below ground).

Spring Flowering Trees and Shrubs Early-spring bloomers, such as lilac, forsythia, and rhododendron, bear flowers on wood formed the previous year. The best time to prune them is late spring -- immediately after they finish blooming. If you prune them later in the growing season or during winter, you’ll remove flower buds and decrease the amount of spring bloom. To keep spring bloomers flowering vigorously, remove some of the oldest shoots all the way to the ground. This allows younger stems to grow and bloom.

Summer Blooming Trees and Shrubs Plants that bloom in summer, such as potentilla, butterfly bush, and crape myrtle, produce their flowers on new growth from the current season. Prune them in winter while they’re dormant, or in early spring just before they push out their new growth. You can even cut them all the way to the ground in late winter, and they’ll still bloom that same summer.

Save time by using a pole pruner with a rotating head (available at your local Wilco store) to remove stems all the way to the base of the plant. That way, you don’t have Word to bend over for each cut, saving not only From time, but also wear WILCO and tear on your back!

Hydrangeas Most hydrangea types — pink, blue, or white mopheads and lacecaps, or oakleaf forms — bloom on old wood. Prune these types of hydrangeas before midsummer. If you prune them in winter or early spring, you’ll be removing flower buds. With newer re-blooming types, such as the Endless Summer Series or Let’s Dance Series, which bloom on new growth as well as old wood, timing of pruning is less critical. Even if you cut off some of the flower buds by pruning the old stems, the plant will bloom on the new growth. White-flowered paniculata-types flower on new wood, so they can be pruned any time other than just before they bloom.

Shrubs Without Showy Blooms Cut back shrubs grown primarily for their foliage, such as barberry and burning bush, almost anytime except in late autumn. New growth that starts after late-season pruning won’t harden off properly before winter. If you want to do major pruning, it’s best to cut the shrub back when it is dormant in winter. Earth Workplace Cold and Flu Season
For business owners, cold and flu season can be more than an inconvenience. Proactive employers work to minimize the impact that a prolonged cold and flu season can have on their businesses. “According to the Centers for Disease Control, the flu alone costs U.S. companies $10.4 billion in direct costs including hospitalizations and outpatient visits. The CDC also estimates up to one-fifth of the U.S. population will get the flu in a given flu season, and more than 200,000 Americans will be hospitalized with seasonal, flu-related complications. With that in mind I want to share some awesome free resources with employers to help them get through this cold and flu season. The first is Healthy Workplace Project. This website, run by health products supplier Kimberly-Clark Worldwide Inc., educates employers and employees about germs in the workplace and how to reduce workplace absences due to illness. There are short videos you could share with your employees. Check out this resource for a great proactive wellness

Sleep Apnea and Screening at your Eye Doctor! Part 1 Anne Turner Sleep Specialist While the public is still largely unaware of the dangers that sleep apnea (a disorder characterized by persistent pauses in breathing during sleep) poses, awareness about the disorder has been slowly building within the community of healthcare professionals. But while sleep apnea is normally associated with disorders such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, impedance and hypertension, there is also a growing awareness of the association between sleep apnea and glaucoma. People who work in sleep medicine have always been troubled by the public’s lack of awareness about sleep apnea. Greater than 5% of the American population is estimated to have Sleep Apnea. A large majority of these people do not even know they have a problem, let alone an easily diagnosed, but life-threatening problem. This easily obtained diagnosis can be accomplished in Sleep Disorder Centers that resemble high-end, hotel-like settings, or at your own home supervised by a Board Certified Sleep Physician. (Always make sure any doctor who treats and follows up with your sleep is a Sleep Specialist and Board Certified.) (For CPAP therapy always make sure you go to a Medical supply company that has on staff and available on site, Registered Sleep Therapists (RPSGT) and/or Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT), trained in Sleeping disorders or who have worked in Sleep Clinics. Look for these credentials: RPSGT = Registered Sleep Therapist (a long acronym for Registered Polysomnographic Technologist), or RRT.
Ask if they have Sleep Lab experience doing sleep studies and setting up sleep therapy equipment. Dual registry in Sleep and Respiratory Therapy (RPSGT and RRT) means they should have many years of education and lots of experience helping people sleep. It is crucial the person taking care of your sleep therapy is a kind person, preferably with a smile, who takes the time to listen to your concerns and is good at solving your problems with the collaboration of your Physician and you. It’s what I call the Sleep Therapy Trio) A Turning Leaf Home Medical Equipment can help you understand Sleep Apnea and guide you through the process necessary to get you and your family the best value and healthiest outcomes from your prescribed CPAP/BiPAP therapy. We love to listen to your individual needs. Nothing brings us more pleasure than to see a once-sleepy patient come return with energy and a sparkle in their eyes and step, after proper sleep therapy with our highly trained and credentialed staff. Sleeping 7-9 hours daily is a necessary part of our well-being and happiness. We know about the healthy reasons why we need sleep but, frankly, we need sleep to also be a happy, safe and productive people. Building up a sleep debt and being sleepy is necessary to fall asleep and sleep through the night. Waking up sleepy and falling asleep at inappropriate times (school, meetings, at work, behind the wheel) is a problem that requires immediate medical attention by a trained Sleep Professional. daily value. In this regard wheat is an inferior source of nutrients to many fruits and vegetables that deliver all of the same health benefits (vitamins, minerals and fiber). Also remember that the anti-nutrients in wheat decrease your ability to absorb nutrients. This means that you will not get all of the nutrients in your whole wheat or the other foods you eat with it. FACT #3 WHEAT COMES WITH BAD COMPANY Foods that contain wheat often have other undesirable features as well. The CDC has reported that two of the top sources of sodium in the American diet are Breads/rolls and Pizza, both of which contain wheat. Wheat is usually used in baking which creates Advanced Glycation End-products (AGE) which are formed when proteins (such as WGA) and sugars are combined at high temperature.
These AGEs are associated with type 2 diabetes, cancer and aging effects (such an appropriate name!). Now the decision is yours on what to do with this information. Despite what the USDA, who has high stakes in the sale of wheat, may tell you wheat is not an essential part of the diet. In fact, you have a much better chance of receiving the vitamins, minerals, fats and phytonutrients you need by replacing wheat with fruits and vegetables. In closing I will quote Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, who wisely said, “Let food be thy medicine”. Caring for Vintage Linen Sharon Anderson Albany Antique Mall
This is that time of year when we begin pulling out Great Grandma’s handmade linens to use during our holiday celebrations. One of the most frequently asked question at the antique mall is how to care for them. After doing some research on-line I came across this eBay seller who specializes in vintage linen. She has a lot of great solutions for removing stains. Find her full article by searching for “Basic Care of Vintage Linens and Fabrics.” Here are some of her tips. Not all stains come out with any one recipe. If one method doesn’t work, try another. Don’t give up.

Mix all the ingredients in a large tub, or sink. Add the stained linen and let it soak for several hours or overnight. Every so often take a wooden spoon and agitate the water. Remove and wash as usual in Tide soap. If that doesn’t work, try another method. Sometimes, I have to try several methods before the stain finally comes out.

General Tips Soak linens (except Linen Damask) in a solution of warm water and detergent and an oxygen bleaching agent. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if necessary. Remove and wash as usual in Tide soap.

Vintage Linen Damask items should only be cleaned using detergents NOT containing optical brighteners which are in most commercial household laundry preparations. Instead of using chlorine bleach, try sun bleaching your linens to remove very stubborn stains. First, soak it overnight using the Best Ever Stain Removal recipe. In the morning carefully rinse it in clean water. It usually takes many rinses to get out all the stain removal mixture. Carefully fold it in a dry white towel to remove excess moisture. Never wring out old linens! Wringing causes significant stress to old and delicate fibers. Lay it out on the grass, morning dew is wonderful, and leave it there for several hours until it is completely dry. Then launder it as usual. I have had wonderful success with a multitude of stains and fabrics and highly recommend using the sun, to sun-bleach your vintage linens and fabric. Check out her ideas for storing vintage linens, as well as other great tips in next month’s paper. As always, thank you for supporting Albany Antique Mall.

Travel Obesity Epidemic Impacting Pets
Cheer
Who doesn’t love to give their pet a treat? Or maybe even some table scraps? But before you give Fido or Fluffy that last bite of food from your dinner plate, think about your pet’s health. Obesity is a serious health threat to our pets! According to a survey of veterinarians in 2012, 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats are overweight or obese. That equals 88.4 million pets that are too heavy and at risk of a variety of preventable diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. Other common weight-related conditions in dogs and cats include osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, kidney disease and a shortened life expectancy. Like humans, these conditions can be avoided simply by preventing pets from gaining weight and helping them to shed excess pounds. One easy step – limit the number of treats and “people food” we’re giving to Fluffy and Fido.

The study also found that a percentage of owners of overweight pets actually would classify their pet as normal weight, which means many of us aren’t even aware that our cute pooch might technically be overweight. To help dog and cat owners better understand what their pet’s weight really means, the Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention developed an online pet weight translator and tables of the most common breeds, comparing extra pounds on our pets in human terms. For example, did you know that a 12 pound Yorkie is equivalent to a woman weighing 218 pounds? If you’re interested in learning more about what your dog’s weight really means and tips on how to keep your pet healthy, visit www. PetObesityPrevention.com. We also encourage all pet owners to talk with their vet about their pet’s weight and get advice on proper diet and exercise.
We recently had new clients bring a young male cat, which was very nearly dead, into our clinic at the very end of the day. His temperature would not register on the thermometer and his heart was beating very slowly. It was clear he was uncomfortable and I quickly felt his belly to confirm his diagnosis. His bladder was very distended, firm and painful. He was “blocked.” The technical term for this condition is obstructive lower urinary tract disease and this is a condition that occasionally happens to male cats. Both male and female cats can have periodic episodes of lower urinary tract disease. Signs of lower urinary tract disease are similar in both male and female cats, and include: excessive grooming of the genitals, increased frequency of urination and in smaller volumes, straining to urinate, peeing outside the box, and sometimes blood tinged urine. The symptoms are the same regardless of the underlying cause. The causes include urinary crystals and or bladder stones, urinary tract infection and anatomical abnormalities. Anatomical abnormalities are extremely rare. Urinary tract infections rarely occur in cats between the ages of one and twelve years of age. Urinary crystals and bladder stones are slightly more common and

Kona also needs a large fenced yard where he can run and play. And Malamutes are known for their strong willed nature so he’ll need a family who can give him all of the love and attention he needs. Kona is great with kids but he’s a bit goofy so may do best in a home with older kids as he’s unaware of his size and may knock the little ones down. can often be addressed through dietary modification. The most common cause of symptoms is a condition known as idiopathic cystitis. Nearly two thirds of cats with episodes of urinary disease are due to idiopathic cystitis. This is a condition we don’t yet completely understand and will be the subject of a future article. The point of this article is that males have much narrower urethras than females and they can get plugged up if they are showing the symptoms of lower urinary tract disease. Plugs are formed from combinations of blood, crystals and mucous. The most common location for a plug to get lodged is at the very end of the urethra which is at the tip of the male’s penis. Once the plug is lodged the male cat has officially become blocked and his urine has nowhere to go. The bladder simply gets bigger and bigger. This is an extremely painful situation. If a male cat shows the above symptoms, demonstrates extreme pain, squats for long periods while producing little to no urine, and howls whenever his abdomen is touched, he needs to be seen by a vet immediately. The sooner he is unblocked the quicker he will recover. If the condition persists he will become increasingly lethargic while remaining extremely uncomfortable. The cardiovascular system begins to shut down and the body temperature drops as Urinary Tract continued on page 14

Memories Soldier, Hero, Movie Star I thought since November is the month we salute our veterans I would take this month’s column to look at the life of Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War Two. Murphy, born to a sharecropper family in 1925, was decorated with 33 distinguished medals for his service including the Congressional Medal of Honor. Hollywood was quick to take notice after the war ended. From the late 40’s through the early 1960’s Audie Murphy would make a total of 44 movies and one TV series, most of them westerns and most now available on DVD. Occasionally Murphy would step out of the western format to play himself in the autobiographical World War Two epic, “To Hell and Back,” in 1955, and even the role of a military journalist in the comedy, “Joe Butterfly.” Other roles would include the Civil War epic, “Red Badge of Courage,” made in 1951. For those looking for western action, I would recommend the 4-movie Turner Classic movie DVD Set called, “The Audie Murphy
Reviews
Western Collection.” The four movies included are: “Ride Clear of Diablo,” made in 1954; “Drums Across the River,” also made in 1954 and co-starring Walter Brennan; Rick “Sierra,” made in Rogers 1950 with co-star Movies Burl Ives; and “Ride and DVDs a Crooked Trail,” from 1958 in which Murphy matches gunplay with Walter Matthau. One of my very favorite Audie Murphy films is 1957’s, “Night Passage,” in which James Stewart and Audie Murphy are brothers. Stewart is the good brother lawman and Murphy is the “bad guy” brother. I could go on and on about Audie Murphy movies. For a period of about 20 years after World War Two he was never off a film set. Unfortunately, Murphy’s life was cut short when the private plane that was carrying him on a business trip crashed into a Virginia mountainside in1971. We not only lost a great war hero that day, we also lost a terrific movie star who probably never would have guessed that his movies would live on in our living- and family-rooms well into the twenty-first century.
Milk and Honey by Faye Kellerman
I have to admit that it’s taken a while for me to get around to reading Faye Kellerman, the author of over twenty mysteries. The reason: I didn’t particularly enjoy the book I’d read by her husband, Jonathan Kellerman! However, I’d had enough people tell me that they liked one half of the couple, but not the other (some prefer him, some prefer her) that I figured if Jonathan wasn’t my cup of tea, Faye just might be. Cop Peter Decker finds a twoyear-old girl wandering the streets of a Los Angeles suburb. He takes her in, and his search for her parents quickly turns into an investigation of a multiple homicide. Meanwhile, an old army buddy of his (they are both Vietnam vets) gets in trouble with an aggravated rape charge, and he is in the midst of a soul-searching conversion to Judaism in order to please his girlfriend. Kellerman does a good job of paralleling some major themes in all three plot lines: the guilt of a killer, the convictions of the devout, and the duty to family, friends,
or career. Much of the book reads like a police procedural, along the lines of Ed McBain or Scott Joseph Wambaugh. Givens, Kellerman keeps Browsers the pace quick, Bookstores, and any thematic and fellow ideas are dealt with reviewer, subtly and without daughter, interruption of the Amanda plot or character Givens development. Detective Peter Decker is less a hero than many protagonists, and Kellerman lets the minor characters shine with moments of insight or bravery. Her aim is to create a realistic cop, not a funthough-fake supercop. My only disappointment, really, was the ending. Although I should have expected it considering the rest of the book, the ending was too... believable. Where’s Agatha Christie with her ridiculous string of clues to pin the guilt on the one character you never suspected? No, Kellerman stays true to form and provides a solid, if slightly anticlimactic, denouement. A well done book, and I would definitely be interested in more in the series.

potassium that normally is excreted in the urine backs up into the blood. High levels of blood potassium cause the heart to beat slower and with less force and eventually stop beating all together. Most of our clients are familiar with this condition because we make sure all owners of male cats know the warning signs. These clients were new to us and mistook their cat’s condition for constipation, an understandable mistake. The laxatives he was given didn’t help.
Thankfully he recovered completely with aggressive treatment during five days of hospitalization. If caught earlier his recovery would have been quicker. If you or someone you know owns a male cat please make sure you are all familiar with this condition. If you have questions, please call us at 541-926-8817. Albany Animal Hospital is here for you as your key resource when it comes to the health and well-being of your best friend.
