By Karen Rogers Every family has cherished and hallowed holiday traditions that seem to be unchangeable, but life has a tendency to disrupt even the most steadfast family rites. So it becomes a challenge to adapt and evolve with changing situations. One Halloween, when our daughter Catherine was in fourth grade, I cut out about fifty bats from black construction paper, threaded them and hung them in the front hall by the door. When the door was opened, the bats got very agitated-she loved it! She hangs her own bats over her desk at her job in Portland. Our own bats still fly in October. Years ago we decided to forgo the turkey at Thanksgiving in favor of Lasagna! Rick happened to mention this on his radio show and we were bombarded with questions and disbelief! My own Uncle was at first aghast, but he finally saw the light and that very year he had his favorite meal, pork hocks and sauerkraut, for his non-conformist dinner. My first convert! After Catherine moved out, we acquired several rescue cats. One or two cats can co-exist with a Christmas tree. Several cats with a tree in the house are a Three Stooges comedy short. Rick and I took our large collection of ornaments and hung them from push pins on the ceiling. We went from one small portion to covering the entire living room ceiling, and it is a very large room! It takes several days, but we get to rekindle memories as we hang out cherished mementos. It is always unexpected when you change one or two small details. So, it is fun and sometimes less work, to disrupt a rooted tradition and plant a new one.
