These vegetables our our friends! If no one had discovered America, we wouldn’t be eating any of them.

by Karen Rogers October 12th is Columbus Day and all dedicated foodies must stand up and salute!!! Although he was not personally responsible for them, many of the most popular foods today came from the voyages of discovery to the New World. Imagine life without potatoes, corn, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, squash, green beans, sweet potatoes, turkey, black pepper, vanilla and CHOCOLATE!!! Sure, there were other foods, but America added a whole lot of piquant tastiness that quite frankly improved most cuisines. Think about spaghetti without tomato sauce and pizza, which existed in Roman times and was called offellae and was topped with ...dormice!!?? I think I’ll take a sausage and peppers any day, with extra sauce. Vanilla goes into everything from perfume to ice cream. Have you priced a bottle of Coty’s Vanilla Fields recently? Can you conceive of a chili cook-off without chilis? And no corn bread to sop it up. A childhood without PB and J sandwiches. Thanksgiving without turkey, sweet and mashed potatoes, cranberries or pumpkin pie!?! We’d all starve! Sorry, I got carried away. A few years ago, a doctor advised my daughter to give up coffee, tea and chocolate. She replied, “I heard the coffee and tea.” Some things you just don’t mess with. And never come between my Dad and chocolate. So as we are deep in harvest, just remember how many things we eat are “home grown”. And thanks again, Chris.

By Karen Rogers

There are two kinds of people in the world- those who hate mincemeat and those who love it. I intend to make everyone a lover with this recipe. I like to use Cross and Blackwell or Bordons None Such. Guess what? The “meat” is usually a small amount of suet that nobody can taste. That’s all well and good but to make my MMP, you need to plan ahead! Buy a box of Golden Raisins and place them in a jar and cover them with dark rum. Let them soak for about a week until they get plump and very happy. This is seriously delicious and you can use them in bread puddings, cookies and candies. Remember this is a secret between you and me. Pour the mincemeat into a bowl and add 1 C soaked raisins. Peel and core 1 large apple and 1 very large Bosc pear. Other types of pears disintegrate. Add to the mince, with a little of the rum and mix well. Make or buy enough crust for a two crust pie (you can make the crust with rum, too). Line a nine-inch pan with your favorite pie crust. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Pour in the mince mix and top with a crust. Bake this on

Karen’s delicious Mince Pie is hard to resist.

a baking sheet in case of leaks. For a prettier pie, mix 1 egg yolk with 3 Tbsp heavy cream and brush lightly over the crust before baking. Sprinkle a little sugar over for sparkle. Bake for about 30 minutes or until well-browned and bubbling. Check the temperature; you want 200 degrees to make sure the fruit is cooked. If it browns too quickly, cover lightly with foil. Cool on a rack. I think that all the naysayers will taste this and instantly see the error of their ways and be instantly converted.

Campus Concerns Nationwide, young adults are packing their bags and heading to college. Campus is a great place to share ideas, and, unfortunately, the occasional meningococcal infection. Meningococcal disease attacks the brain and spinal column. It is spread by kissing, sharing utensils/cups, and through living in close quarters; which makes college campuses ideal breeding grounds! Early symptoms of meningitis are very similar to the flu: drowsiness, fever, confusion, headache, and a characteristic stiff neck. The infection progresses rapidly, but young suffers often delay getting treatment; thinking they just have the “bug du jour”. Since 2013, four college campuses have experienced serious meningococcal disease outbreaks. The most recent outbreak occurred at the University of Oregon (Jan-June 2015). Approximately 1200 Americans will get meningococcal disease each year. Even with proper medical attention; 10-15% of these people will die (often within 24hrs). Of those who live, 11-19% will lose arms or legs, suffer nervous system damage, seizures, strokes, scarring, or become deaf. Since the disease is so physically (and financially) devastating, even with

treatment; prevention through the use of vaccines is very important. Many college bound individuals may have been vaccinated as adolescents for Pamela meningitis, and are Becker, RpH thus not concerned Rice’s about contracting the Pharmacy disease. However, the meningococcal & Gifts vaccines available A “Pill Box prior to 2015 Pharmacy” only provided protection against the meningococcal serotypes A,C,W,and Y. Their trade names are: Menactra, Menomune, MenHibrix, and Menveo. Unfortunately, the strain currently circulating on college campuses is serotype B. The FDA approved a new vaccine formulation, released in 2015, that provides protection against meningitis B. The two trade names for the meningitis B vaccine are: Trumenba and Bexsero. If you are not sure which of the meningitis vaccines you have received; ask your pharmacist to check your Oregon immunization records. If you were not immunized in the state of Oregon; contact your home-state physician. Meningitis is a very serious disease. Fortunately, we have new vaccines that provide protection against this infection. Talk to your pharmacist or physician about being immunized today!

Sleeping is Important

Earth

Every aspect of human health can be impacted by poor sleep. Weight gain and early aging can be caused by a lack of sleep. Disruption of sleep and circadian patterns should be avoided as much as possible because it can take days for the body to get back in rhythm. Some things that most don’t think about that can interfere with sleep is a change in pre-sleep routine, room temperature or a lack of exposure to light from the sun on a daily basis. Some other issues that come up from sleep deprivation are decreased immune system function which can lead to more chronic disease. It is known that getting less than 6 hours of sleep per night triples the risk of high blood pressure, and chronic sleep deprivation can cause an increase in one’s chances of developing early onset Alzheimer’s disease, as it halts the brain from producing new neurons. It also causes a depressed mood and obviously fatigue. Besides getting daily sun exposure

(impossible here in Oregon) or at least outside light, pre-sleep routines and good room temperature are other things one can do for better sleep. At the top of the list is Kevin dumping emotional Ross, DC stress before laying advanced Chiropractic down. Another important one to Clinic avoid is watching 541-928-1010 TV or using the computer in the hour before going to bed. Dark coverings over windows are important to keep light out in the early morning and disrupting sleep and melatonin production. Taking a hot bath also will get the body ready to sleep, as the body temperature will drop and signal that it is time to rest. Adequate amounts of physical activity greatly improve sleep quality, and provide great stress and anxiety reduction, whereas caffeine and alcohol increase anxiety, and should be avoided. Wake up energized, get close to 8 hours of sleep per night. Eat right, move right, think right, sleep right and have a well-adjusted spine for optimal health!

Tips to maximize dental benefits: Find out your Annual Maximum. An annual maximum is the amount

your dental benefit company will pay within a calendar year. Plans differ, but are usually $1,000 per year. On January 1st annual maximum renews and you lose everything left over from 2015. Monthly Premiums. Premiums are what you pay monthly for coverage. Every family member needs regular dental cleanings to help prevent and detect early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer or other problems. Dental problems can get worse by delaying treatment and are progressive – they do not go away. A simple cavity now can turn into root canal therapy later. Dental benefits help to offset additional expenses for dental treatment. What is a deductible? The amount you pay out-of-pocket before the benefit company pays for any dental services. It can vary, but the average deductible is $50 per year. The deductible starts over when your plan rolls over. If you have dental benefits, don’t hesitate to use them to their fullest!

Stuff If The Walls Could Talk Winter Again?

Travel

I just can’t believe that Fall is here and Winter is just around the corner again, can you? It is time to start batting down the hatches to prepare for cooler temps and lots of wind and rain. Is your house ready for a visit from old man Winter? Is the caulking in good shape around your windows and doors? How about your roof? Do you have any shingles missing? If you have a chimney, is the flashing in good shape? This is a good timeto inspect and clean your gutters. The gunk in the gutters should br pretty much dried up and easy to remove right now. However, if you wait too long, you will be dealing with the much dreaded black gutter goo! You should also run water down your downspouts to make sure they are clear and free of obstructions.

• Scissors - for cutting out debris from matted in fur and freeing your pet from entanglements. • Sterile eye wash - Saline solution, not contact lens solution. • Tweezers - to remove splinters or other foreign materials from wounds. • Ear wash - speak to your vet about what one would be best for your pet. • Toenail trimmer and styptic pencil - for torn toenails. Cornstarch also works for torn nails, but not for skin wounds. • QuikClot or similar - to stop bleeding (wounds). • Tape - preferably the 1” white medical tape. Easy to tear off and holds well. • Roll Gauze - used for bandaging, an aid to stop bleeding, and padding for splints. • Vet Wrap - this is a conforming bandage wrap used over a telfa pad or roll gauze that comes in many colors and two sizes (2” and 4” - pick one that best fits your pet). It clings to itself and is semiwatertight. Caution is advised to not wrap this too tight. It is best to unwrap it from the roll, then use it for the bandage with very light tension. It can be purchased at many feed stores (horse section) and some veterinary clinics. • Telfa pads - non-stick dressings for bandaging a wound. • Bandage Scissors - these scissors have a blunted blade to easily slip between skin and bandage material and not cut the patient’s skin. • Antiseptic wash or wipes - look for non-stinging preparations such as chlorhexidine or betadine. Rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide are not good for open sores or wounds.

• Antibiotic ointment - over-the-counter “general purpose” antibiotic ointment for light use with minor skin wounds. Not for eye use. Caution is advised for animals that may ingest by licking. The antibiotics are absorbed via the skin, remaining ointment may collect debris or actually slow healing in some cases. Use with discretion. • Vet-prescribed pain relief (NSAID) - speak to your vet about obtaining as-needed first aid kit pain relief. Do not use human prescription or over-thecounter pain medications for pets. Some medications, like Tylenol and Ibuprofen may be fatal to pets if ingested. • Latex or plastic exam gloves • A muzzle - or materials to make a muzzle. Even the most well-trained animals may bite when injured or afraid. • Thermometer - know the normals for dog and cat vital signs and how to use the thermometer. • Water-based lubricating jelly - for use with rectal thermometers. • Ice and hot packs - cool down skin after a burn or keep an animal warm if hypothermic. Always use a cloth between the pack and skin. • Extra towels, wash cloths and a blanket - use for washing, keeping warm/cool, and if necessary, a way to transport the injured pet (sling). • Having a crate or carrier for housing as well as extra litter and box for cats. • Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) - for stings and allergic reactions - speak with your vet first about proper dosing. • Syringe or large eye dropper - to flush wounds or administer fluids by mouth.

Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant has long been known as one of the mid-valley’s best destination restaurants. For over three decades Joseph, Matilda and their daughter Karen have made their eating establishment legendary in the Albany area drawing customers from throughout North America who make Albany a stop on their trips through the region to simply enjoy the best Hungarian food on the West coast. Now in their 31st year, Novak’s has moved into their new location at 206 S.W Second Ave. in the heart of downtown Albany. Joseph and Matilda, immigrants from political oppression in their native country of Hungary, started their restaurant in April of 1984 in a small building that had been a lapidary shop adjacent to the Assembly of God Church. Then they moved into a bigger location on Heritage Way in South Albany in 2003. In an effort to own their own

building and to be part of historic downtown Albany, they are now open in their new location with the same great menu and service. Besides their delicious Hungarian menu, Matilda is still on hand to to make the baked treats and pastries she has become known for. Hours at the new restaurant are : Monday and Tuesday, 11AM-9PM; Wednesday through Sunday, 7AM-9PM. A special Hungarian buffet is served starting at 5PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. In addition. Novak’s offers a brunch on Sundays from 10AM until 2PM. Although walk-in customers are always welcome, reservations are recommended for larger groups. You can make reservations by calling: 541-967-9488. Remember Novak’s is a long time business partner in the Points for Profit program so when you have your delicious meal be sure to save your receipts for you favorite participating non-profit organization.

Lessons from a Hedgehog

Going

Just recently, my daughter, Hannah, adopted a new member to our home. The process of integration has been slow as we get to know Gizmo, the hedgehog. From a distance, she is cute and adorable, but up close she is spiky, small, and curls in a ball if we try to get close. Gizmo has been through a lot in her short life. One of her owners was a child that was dealing with depression and suicide. Gizmo was a source of encouragement and comfort. When the child got older, he didn’t want to keep the hedgehog. Gizmo, like a foster child, was placed in another home. This happened a couple of times until she found placement with my oldest daughter, Kirstie. The reality of taking care of Gizmo settled in when Kirstie got her second job. Once again, Gizmo needed a home. After several phone calls, Hannah agreed to take in the already timid creature. We have learned that connecting relationally to Gizmo will take time. Each night Hannah cuddles with her hedgehog to create a bond. One person told us to place one of Hannah’s shirts in the cage to help cultivate that connection.

Like any new member that arrives in the home, there is always some who feel like they are being replaced. This would be the case for our Pomeranian Keven dog. He is not sure Ferguson, what to think as it Willamette relates to Gizmo. Valley He at times is intrigued and wants Christian to smell Gizmo. Supply Other times he simply barks for our attention. Having Gizmo in our home has been a reminder to me that relationships take time. Whether it be a child that is coming from the foster care system or the arrival of a new born baby, there will be adjustment for all. In my last article I talked about adoption. God has adopted us into his family. “Yet to all who received Him to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Although our little hedgehog has been in many homes, I hope that we can be her final destination. We have a promise from God that brings each and every Christian hope in a difficult world. We have a secure final home we can look forward to with our Savior, Jesus Christ. “Praise

Memories Collecting “Spooky” Movie Memorabilia Collecting theater-used movie memorabilia from classic scary. mystery and science fiction movies from the turn of the last century through the early 1960’s, is a main hobby of mine. I grew up in movie theaters since my dad worked for the Adamson Theater Chain which owned and operated the Venetian and Granada, Theaters, as well as two drive-in theaters in Albany. They would later also own the Rialto Theater, now Albany Civic Theater, and would build the first incarnation of downtown Albany’s Pix Theater. I would not only grow up in these theaters, I would later work at various jobs in them and later, in the early 70’s, would become the assistant manager for all of the Albany area Adamson Theaters. I was always a fan of mysteries and sci-fi. In the 1950’s I never met a giant sized, big screen, man eating insect I didn’t like. If you are collecting movie memorabilia there are several ways you can go. I like collecting sets of 11x14 inch lobby cards and pressbooks sent to theater managers full of photos

Reviews

and stories about the movies that could be given to local newspapers for publication. Unlike larger movie posters, lobby cards are smaller, easier to Rick store and display. Rogers Even though the Movies bulk of the mystery, and DVDs scary and sci-fi movies were in glorious black and white, the cards themselves were generally in color. The cards were usually issued in sets of eight. There is a title card, resembling a small version of the full-sized movie poster, followed by 7 additional cards depicting various scenes from the movie. In an attempt to sell the movie ticket to an audience, oft-times the cards would depict a pinup shot of the leading female star or an exciting action scene that is not even in the movie advertised. Part of the fun of collecting is trying to get complete sets which often is accomplished one card at a time and over an extended amount of time, even years. Pressbooks were only meant for theater managers or those who were in Spooky Movies continued on page 11

What is Loyalty?

Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy deeply examines the issue of loyalty, while telling a coming-of-age story in a medieval fantasy setting. The basic fantastic premise is that certain people have a natural ability for magic, and can be trained to use it . The magic in this land, however, is not fireworks and levitation, but based in communication. Just like in today’s “Information Age,” knowledge is power, and the magic users’ telepathic powers make them valuable assets to the king. A slightly different sort of magic is called the Wit, which is communication and bonding between human and animal. Our young hero is the illegitimate child of the man who was first in line to the throne. Upon the death of his father, he is brought to the castle for upbringing. His presence is a threat to those currently in line for the throne, and his promise as a magic user makes him a formidable opponent...or ally. The present king makes Fitz swear loyalty to him, and promises that he will reward

Fitz well. At this point, most fantasy epics would now send Fitz on a trajectory straight for the Scott throne and a Givens, beautiful princess, Browsers but that’s not the Bookstores, case here. Instead, and fellow Fitz’s loyalty is reviewer, challenged from all daughter, sides: his king, his Amanda prince, his country, Givens his friends, his Witwolf, and his true love all require his attention. At what point does loyalty to the King supersede loyalty to the nation? Is there a difference between loyalty to the King and to the position of king? Does loyalty to friends and loved ones outweigh political loyalty? Can one expect loyalty from friends if you are not loyal to them? Tests of loyalty and trust are always interesting to think about; whether you are trying to navigate your own priorities, or, for example, watching presidential debates. Although today I don’t read nearly as much fantasy as when I was a teenager, the occasional dip into another world can be interesting even for adults when big issues are dealt with.

Natural Remedies and Diet Over 36 million deaths each year are caused by noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung diseases. With diet and natural remedies, you may be able to lower your risks of chronic illnesses and prevent these diseases from effecting your life. Start with a Mediterranean diet; seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and organic low fat meats such as chicken, fish (always wild caught), and beef. Next, make sure you are drinking enough clean water (purified, distilled, or alkaline); most people should be consuming half of their body weight in ounces. Income tax may be the last thing on your mind after a divorce or separation. However, these events can have a big impact on your taxes. Alimony and a name change are just a few items you may need to consider. Here are some key tax tips to keep in mind if you get divorced or separated. Child Support. If you pay child support, you can’t deduct it on your tax return. If you receive child support, the amount you receive is not taxable. Alimony Paid. If you make payments under a divorce or separate maintenance decree or written separation agreement you may be able to deduct them as alimony. This applies only if the payments qualify as alimony for federal tax purposes. If the decree or agreement does not require the payments, they do not qualify as alimony. Alimony Received. If you get alimony from your spouse or for-

autumn is in the air!

This is part 2 in what I have now expanded into a 4 part series on Oregon’s new sick leave law that goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. Last month we covered enforcement, employers who must comply, and local ordinances. This month I will discuss eligibility periods and accrual methods for sick leave time. Two earning methods: There are two options for determining the amount of sick leave employees earn. The first is the accrual method, in which employees earn at least 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Under the accrual method, employees may carry over up to 40 hours of unused sick time from one year to the next. Also, you may have a policy that caps their accrual at 80 hours, or caps their use at 40 hours per year. The second option is the frontloading method, in which you load up a new employee’s bank as soon as he or she is eligible for leave, and then load it up again with 40 hours of sick leave at the beginning of each subsequent

Health A Squirrel is Just a Rat With a Cuter Outfit Yes , it is disappointing but squirrels are rodents, too and they carry the same diseases as rats and mice and display many of the same behaviors. Most of which are not good for us humans and the places we call home. It is at this time of year that we again see a rise in calls asking what to do about these nutty little home invaders. So it’s important to know a little bit about squirrels and their behavior because clearly the big problem is that once they have found a nice safe home in YOUR HOME, it is very difficult to get them to leave (even if you ask nicely). There are at least a dozen different types of squirrels that live here in Oregon divided into two basic groups: tree squirrels and ground squirrels. Some are Oregon natives while a few are invasive species. They have a wide range of habitats and dine on a variety of foods but it tends to be the characteristics that they all share that pose the most significant problems for homeowners. Squirrels are diurnal, active in daylight hours and most are typically active year round gathering and storing food in their nests (called dreys). These nests are collections of leaves and twigs up in tree branches or hollow parts of trees or burrows dug into tree roots. However, squirrels will often

abandon these summer homes in search of something more secure in the winter which is commonly an available space in an attic or crawl space or under the founation of your Sean home. The most Meiner common entrance Healthy points for these critters is an attic Home Pest Control, LLC vent, a gable (541) 570-0095 vent, the crease of two ajoining roofs, a soffit and just general building anomolies. More importantly, once inside this cozy space their inate curiosity will cause them to explore their surroundings and CHEW. Squirrels teeth continue to grow their entire lives which drives them to chew on just about anything ..including electrical lines and pipes which can result in house fires and flooded crawlspaces. So clearly getting them out and keeping them out is key. There is no magic method for repelling squirrels so don’t bother with moth balls , fox urine , bright lights, loud music, amonia, or any other wives tale. Trapping and exclusion are the best possible methods for ridding your home of squirrels and there is no substitute for a good inspection, accurate repairs and persistance. If a squirrel problem is gnawing away at you… call Healthy Home Pest Control, LLC 541570-0095

charge of ordering posters and placing ads with the local media. The fake Hollywood press release stories were more often then not simply made-up. A good example is for the 1953 movie “Tarantula” in which a mad scientist inadvertently creates a gigantic tarantula. The big bug is eventually destroyed by Clint Eastwood in one of his earliest films flying a fighter jet firing napalm. The fake news releases said cars were running off the road as the giant tarantula was filmed coming over the nearby hills. YIKES! Now, That’s

Fall Clean-up

Business

Autumn is the right time to do some serious work in the garden. Every moment you spend cleaning now translates into time saved next spring. You’ll save time because cleaning will eliminate weeds and overwintering diseases and pests. Tackle these three general cleanup tasks every year: • Pull annuals when they’re finished, whether they’re planted in beds or pots. • Start cutting perennials. If your area receives a killing frost, start the pruning after that. Try to get this job done before much rain begins. Leave 3-inch stubs in place to catch leaves for winter insulation. Prune dead or storm-damaged branches on shrubs or trees. • Put a layer of mulch around your roses, azaleas, rhododendrons and berry plants for winter protection.

Weeds Eliminate spring weeds by blanketing empty vegetable beds with chopped Brian leaves, mulch, or Coons, newspaper topped Wilco with either of those materials. Or plant a winter cover crop. See your local Wilco Store for many great cover crop options as well as good mulch solutions. Pests and Diseases Deal with slugs this fall as new eggs begin to hatch in the cooler weather. Clean up areas slugs hide: weed piles, boards, or stacked pots. If beds are edged with timbers -- a natural hiding place for slugs -- continuously sprinkle slug bait beside the wood.

Health Care Law Considerations Special Marketplace Enrollment Period. If you lose your health insurance coverage due to divorce, you are still required to have coverage for every month of the year for yourself and the dependents you can claim on your tax return. Losing coverage through a divorce is considered a qualifying life event that allows you to enroll in health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace during a Special Enrollment Period. Changes in Circumstances. If you purchase health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace you may get advance payments of the premium tax credit in 2015. If you do, you should report changes in circumstances to your Marketplace throughout the year. Changes to report include a change in marital status, a name change and a change in your income or family size. By reporting changes, you will help make sure that you get the proper type and amount

of financial assistance. This will also help you avoid getting too much or too little credit in advance. Shared Policy Allocation. If you divorced or are legally separated during the tax year and are enrolled in the same qualified health plan, you and your former spouse must allocate policy amounts on your separate tax returns to figure your premium tax credit and reconcile any advance payments made on your behalf. Publication 974, Premium Tax Credit, has more information about the Shared Policy Allocation. For more on this topic, see Publication 504, Divorced or Separated Individuals. You can get it on IRS.gov/ forms at any time. Each and every taxpayer has a set of fundamental rights they should be aware of when dealing with the IRS. These are your Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
