Ελλάδα διανύει μια εξαιρετικά δύσκολη περίοδο ως χώρα. Αυτό αποτελεί ένα αδιαμφισβήτητο γεγονός που έχει επηρεάσει πολύ την περιρρέουσα ατμόσφαιρα και τη διάθεση του κόσμου, εντός και εκτός συνόρων. Ωστόσο, η δική μας αίσθηση για τα πράγματα δεν αλλάζει: εξακολουθούμε να λειτουργούμε και να σκεφτόμαστε ευρωπαϊκά, με αισιοδοξία για το μέλλον, πιστεύοντας πως η συνέπεια και η επιμονή στις αρχές μας θα οδηγήσει ξανά τη χώρα στην ισορροπία της. Το καλοκαιρινό μας τεύχος λοιπόν, οδηγείται από το φως και την ουσία που γεννιέται καθημερινά δίπλα μας, παρά τις δυσκολίες. Tο καλοκαίρι στην Αθήνα αφορά πάντα στον πολιτισμό της, που προσφέρει στον ξένο επισκέπτη, αλλά και στους κατοίκους της πόλης, εξαιρετικές ευκαιρίες ψυχαγωγίας –αγωγής της ψυχής–σε όλες τις μορφές της τέχνης. Η έκθεση Terrapolis που οργανώνει ο NEON και η Whitechapel Gallery στον κήπο της Γαλλικής Σχολής Αθηνών, με έργα 25 καλλιτεχνών, αποτελεί ωδή στη σύγχρονη τέχνη και τη δημιουργία. Τα γλυπτά αφήνονται στη φύση ακριβώς όπως ορίζει ο τίτλος της έκθεσης, ο οποίος προκύπτει από τη λατινική λέξη «terra», που σημαίνει γη, και την ελληνική λέξη «πόλις». Μια μαγική βόλτα για όλους, που αφυπνίζει τον νου και τις αισθήσεις. Η Αθήνα είναι όμως και τα παραδοσιακά καλοκαιρινά σινεμά της, που αποτελούν όαση τις ζεστές ημέρες και τιμούν όχι μόνο νέες ταινίες, αλλά και κλασικές, που έχουν αφήσει ιστορία και δεν έχεις καμμία άλλη ευκαιρία να τις δεις. Αθήνα είναι επίσης τα καλοκαιρινά πολιτιστικά δρώμενα και οι άνθρωποι που φιλοξενεί το περιοδικό μας και που με τις μελωδίες τους θα μας συνοδεύουν για πολύ καιρό, όπως η γοητευτική Υasmin Levy και ο ιδιαίτερος Πάτρικ Κάρνεϊ των Black Keys. Είναι και τρεις υπέροχες Ελληνίδες ηθοποιοί, η Λένα Παπαληγούρα, η Ραφίκα Σαουίς και η Μαρία Κίτσου, που με την τέχνη τους σηματοδότησαν τον φετινό χειμώνα.

Greece is facing an extremely difficult period as a country. This is an indisputable fact that has greatly influenced the current atmosphere of its people, both at home and abroad. However, our attitude remains the same: we continue to act and think in a European manner, with optimism for the future and the belief that perseverance and consistent principles will help the country find its balance.

Our summer issue is guided by the light and essence that is renewed each day around us, despite the challenging times. Summer in Athens is always about the culture it offers both visitors and residents alike, with outstanding entertainment options –food for the soul– in all forms of art.

The Terrapolis exhibition organised by NEON and the Whitechapel Gallery in the garden of the French School of Athens features works by 25 artists and is an ode to contemporary art and creation. The sculptures appear in nature just as the title of the exhibition intends, as it was derived from the Latin word “terra” meaning earth and the Greek word for city, “polis” – a magical journey for all ages that awakens the mind and senses.

Athens is also defined by its traditional open air cinemas, an oasis on summer days that screen both new and classic films that made their mark on history and are not usually projected on the big screen. Athens as well is about the summer cultural events and the people interviewed in our magazine, whose music lingers with us, like the charming Yasmin Levy and the unique Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. It is also the three wonderful Greek actresses, Lena Papaligoura, Rafika Chawishe and Maria Kitsou, who stunned audiences with their work in “The Maids” this past winter.

ΣΤΗ ΣΥΜΒΟΛΗ ΤΩΝ ΟΔΩΝ ΔΙΔΟΤΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΣΙΝΑ, ΣΤΙΣ ΠΑΡΥΦΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΟΥ ΚΟΛΩΝΑΚΙΟΥ και των εναλλακτικών Εξαρχείων, η επιβλητική σιδερένια πόρτα της Γαλλικής Αρχαιολογικής Σχολής Αθηνών έγινε το μαγικό πέρασμα από το πολύβουο αστικό τοπίο σε έναν παράδεισο επί γης. Ο κατάφυτος κήπος της, ένας καλά κρυμμένος θησαυρός στο κέντρο της πόλης, άνοιξε για πρώτη φορά τις πύλες του στο ευρύ κοινό, δίνοντάς του τη δυνατότητα να περιηγηθεί ανάμεσα σε 37 μοναδικά έργα τέχνης από δημιουργούς 18 χωρών, ανάμεσά τους και Έλληνες. Μετά την περσινή έκθεση «A Thousand Doors» στη Γεννάδιο Βιβλιοθήκη, ο Οργανισμός Πολιτισμού και Ανάπτυξης ΝΕΟΝ, συνεχίζοντας τη συνεργασία του με τη Whitechapel Gallery του Λονδίνου, έβγαλε τα έργα από το φυσικό τους περιβάλλον και τα άφησε να «εισβάλουν» στην καθημερινότητα των πολιτών. Σκοπός του ήταν να μεταβιβάσει τους προβληματισμούς της σύγχρονης τέχνης στη συνείδηση των ανθρώπων, προκαλώντας τους σε έναν ανοιχτό διάλογο τόσο με τους συμπολίτες τους, όσο και με τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό. Για την Iwona Blazwick, την πιο σημαντική γυναίκα της βρεταννικής σύγχρονης τέχνης και επιμελήτρια της έκθεσης Terrapolis, υπήρξαν δύο σημεία αφετηρίας για την πραγματοποίησή της. Από τη μία, τα δημόσια αγάλματα του παρελθόντος, που τόσο αριστοτεχνικά συγχωνεύουν το ανθρώπινο στοιχείο με το ζωικό, και από την άλλη, η σύνθετη λέξη terrapolis την οποία εισήγαγε η ειδική σε θέματα φιλοσοφίας των επιστημών Donna Haraway και προέρχεται από τη λατινική λέξη terra, που σημαίνει γη, και την ελληνική λέξη πόλις. Χωρισμένη σε 4 θεματικές ενότητες –μεταμόρφωση, αρχαίο δράμα, μύθος και βιοηθική–, η έκθεση επιδίωξε να σπάσει τα σύνορα και να μετατρέψει τον πολίτη της χώρας σε πολίτη του κόσμου. Τα έργα, χωρίς τίτλους και επεξηγηματική περιγραφή, βρίσκονταν διασκορπισμένα σε κάθε γωνιά του κήπου και τοποθετημένα ακόμα και στα πιο κρυφά του σημεία, καθιστώντας έτσι σαφές πως φύση και πολιτισμός είναι ένα. Στο κέντρο του κήπου, σε περίοπτη θέση, το έργο του Ugo Rondinone ήταν ίσως η πιο σαφής απεικόνιση του πολίτη της Γης ή αλλιώς, όπως η Iwona Blazwivk τον αποκάλεσε χιουμοριστικά, του terra-πολίτη. Τα παραμορφωμένα χαρακτηριστικά του προσώπου μιας ανθρώπινης μορφής λειτουργούσαν ως επεξηγηματικό εργαλείο της κυκλικής πορείας του χρόνου, με αποτέλεσμα το γλυπτό να μοιάζει πως αναδύεται από έναν άγνωστο πολιτισμό – απομεινάρι του παρελθόντος ή κομμάτι του μέλλοντος. Τέλειο συμβολισμό της αέναης διαδικασίας της μεταμόρφωσης αποτέλεσε επίσης το συγκινητικό γλυπτό του εικαστικού William Cobbing. Μια μεγάλη, ακανόνιστη σφαίρα από πηλό που κρεμόταν από ένα σχοινί έδειχνε σαν ένας ζωντανός οργανισμός, ο οποίος μορφοποιούταν και αναπλαθόταν συνεχώς από ένα ζευγάρι χέρια που ξεπρόβαλαν από το εσωτερικό της. Από την άλλη, η εμβληματική μπρούτζινη κολοκύθα της διάσημης καλλιτέχνιδος Yayoi Kusama υποδήλωνε τη μετάλλαξη – ένα ταπεινό λαχανικό, που συχνά χρησιμοποιείται ως χαρακτηρισμός για τις άσχημες γυναίκες, μετατράπηκε σε ένα όχημα μαγικό, όπως η άμαξα της Σταχτοπούτας. Τέλος, μεγαλόσωμα ζώα ήρθαν να μιλήσουν στην ανθρώπινη συνείδηση και να την αφυπνίσουν. Ο μπρούτζινος γορίλας του Angus Fairhurst,

AT THE INTERSECTION OF DIDOTOU AND SINA STREETS, in the environs of cosmopolitan Kolonaki and alternative Exarchia, the imposing door of the French School of Athens transformed into a magical passageway from the bustling urban landscape to a paradise on earth. Its verdant garden, which is a hidden gem in the centre of the city, opened its doors to the public for the first time and allowed them to wander among 37 unique works of art created by artists from 18 countries, including Greece.

After last year’s “A Thousand Doors” exhibition at the Gennadius Library, the NEON Cultural and Development Organisation and the Whitechapel Gallery of London collaborated for a second time and displaced the works from their natural environment to allow them to “invade” the daily lives of citizens. The aim was to impress the concerns of modern art on the consciousness of the people, provoking them to engage in dialogue with both their fellow citizens and themselves.

For Iwona Blazwick, the most important woman in British modern art and the curator of the Terrapolis exhibition, the realisation of the exhibition hinged on two factors. On the one hand, the public statues of the past, which so masterly merge the human element with the animal, and on the other, the word Terrapolis, a term proposed by science philosopher Donna Haraway that combines the Latin “terra” meaning earth with the Greek “polis” for city.

Divided into 4 thematic sections –transformation, ancient drama, myths and bioethics– the exhibition was seeking to break down boundaries and transform the citizens of Greece into citizens of the world. Not accompanied by a description, the untitled works of art, which clearly state that nature and culture are one and the same, were scattered throughout the garden and even placed in the most isolated of areas.

Prominently displayed in the centre of the garden, the work of Ugo Rondinone was perhaps the most explicit representation of the citizen of the earth, humorously referred to as the terra-citizen by Iwona Blazwick. The deformed facial features of a human form function as an explanatory tool of the cyclical nature of time, and the sculpture seems to emerge from an unknown civilisation – a remnant of the past or potential future. The moving sculpture by William Cobbing comprised the ideal symbolism for the perpetual process of transformation. A large, irregular clay sphere was hanging from a rope, as a reminiscent of a living organism that is continuously regenerated by a protruding pair of arms. Conversely, the emblematic bronze pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama was transformed from a humble vegetable –which is often used to characterise unattractive women– into a magical conveyance, like Cinderella’s carriage. Finally, large-bodied animals came forward to nudge human consciousness and awaken it. που σαν άλλος Νάρκισσος έσκυβε πάνω από έναν οβάλ καθρέφτη, υπογράμμιζε τη μοιραία ροπή του ανθρώπου προς τον αυτοθαυμασμό και τον υπαρξισμό, ενώ ο μισοκοιμισμένος ιπποπόταμος από λάσπη των Jennifer Allora και Guillermo Calzadilla, με έναν performer στην πλάτη του που διάβαζε εφημερίδα και σφύριζε κάθε φορά που εντόπιζε ένα άρθρο κοινωνικής αδικίας, υποδείκνυε την ανάγκη για μια δίκαιη και με σεβασμό προς τον πολίτη κοινωνία. Εκτός των διεθνούς φήμης συμμετεχόντων καλλιτεχνών, πέντε Έλληνες εικαστικοί επιδίωξαν μέσα από τα έργα τους να τονίσουν την άρρηκτη σύνδεση μεταξύ ανθρώπου και φύσης. Το γλυπτό του Κώστα Σαχπάζη, με διαστρωματώσεις από ρητίνη, καουτσούκ, ύφασμα και ξύλο, απεικόνιζε τη διαδικασία αποφλοίωσης ενός δέντρου ή αλλαγής δέρματος ενός ερπετού, ενώ η μετακίνησή του στον χώρο υποδήλωνε την άμεση επαφή του με τον θεατή. Η Ελένη Καμμά, θέλοντας να εκφράσει το ενδιαφέρον της για τον τρόπο με τον οποίον τα αντικείμενα αντικατοπτρίζουν την κοινωνία, αναβίωσε το Wunderkammer του 16ου αιώνα, τοποθετώντας αξιοπερίεργα αντικείμενα μέσα σε τέσσερα ξύλινα ερμάρια που μετατράπηκαν σε σύγχρονα δωμάτια θαυμάτων. Οι ήχοι και η μουσική που παράγονταν από τα χάλκινα και ατσάλινα γλυπτά του Αθανάσιου Αργιανά μάς καλούσαν να γίνουμε μέρος του έργου και να μετατρέψουμε ένα καπέλο σε γκονγκ και τα κελύφη από στρείδια σε κύμβαλα, σπάζοντας έτσι τα όρια μεταξύ σώματος, φύσης και κουλτούρας. Την ίδια στιγμή, ο Διονύσης Καβαλλιεράτος, εμπνευσμένος από το κολοσσιαίο άγαλμα του Μεγάλου Κωνσταντίνου στη Ρώμη, δημιούργησε βάθρα με τα διαμελισμένα του άκρα – θραύσματα ενός πολιτισμού που άκμασε και αναπόφευκτα οδηγήθηκε στην παρακμή.

on social injustice, and acted as a warning of the need of a society that is both fair and respectful of citizens.

In addition to internationally renowned artisans, five Greek artists seek to highlight the inextricable link between man and nature through their work. The sculpture by Kostas Sahpazis was formed by layers of resin, rubber, fabric and wood, illustrating the peeling process of a tree or the shedding of a reptile’s skin and making direct contact with the viewer. Eleni Kamma, wishing to express her interest in how objects reflect society, revived the Wunderkammer of the 16th century, placing curious objects in four wooden cabinets that were transformed into modern viewing rooms. The sounds and music produced by the bronze and steel sculptures by Athanasios Argianas invited us to step into the project and turn a hat into a gong and oyster shells into cymbals, thus breaking down barriers between the body, nature and culture. Moreover, Dionysis Kavallieratos was inspired by the colossal statue of Constantine the Great in Rome and created pedestals with crumbling edge – fragments of a civilisation that once flourished and was inevitably led into decline.

γο «Breathing Space» επέδειξε την εφευρετικότητα της εικαστικού: μέσα από τη χρήση πρωτότυπων υλικών, φυσικών ή χημικών, «έπλασε» κοιλιές που αιχμαλωτίζουν τη στιγμή που ο εισπνεόμενος αέρας εκπνέεται και γίνεται ζωή! Τι σας επηρέασε για τη χρήση των συγκεκριμένων υλικών; Τα υλικά έχουν διαλεχτεί πρακτικά και εννοιολογικά για συγκεκριμένο λόγο. Για παράδειγμα, υπάρχει μια κοιλιά που είναι φτιαγμένη από πολυεστέρα και μια πλαστική σακούλα σκουπιδιών, κάτι που συμβολίζει τη βίαιη επέμβαση του ανθρώπου στο οικοσύστημα με υλικά που συμβάλλουν στην εκτεταμένη μόλυνσή του. Στον αντίποδα, το κερί μελισσών ή τα κλαδιά δέντρων συνθέτουν πιθανώς την κοιλιά κάποιων περίεργων πλασμάτων –ίσως τεράτων– της φύσης. Η βιοηθική προσπαθεί να θέσει όρια στους πολίτες και να περιορίσει την παρέμβασή τους στη φύση. Πιστεύετε πως πρέπει να επιβάλλονται τέτοια μέτρα; Από τη στιγμή που υπάρχει πληθώρα αγαθών στη φύση και εμείς οι άνθρωποι κάνουμε τόσο κακή χρήση όσων μάς παρέχονται, είναι μια πολύ καλή ιδέα να μας επιβάλλονται όρια, μέτρα και απαγορεύσεις, για να μπορούμε να εκτιμάμε ό,τι μας χαρίζεται τόσο απλόχερα. Λαμπρό παράδειγμα, ο χώρος της Γαλλικής Σχολής Αθηνών που άνοιξε μόνο για αυτήν την έκθεση, προκαλώντας τέτοιο δέος και θαυμασμό στους πολίτες. Θεωρείτε πως στην τέχνη μπορεί να υπάρχουν όρια; Η τέχνη υπάρχει για να σπάει και να ξεπερνάει τα όρια. Ακόμα και οι πιο ακραίες της εκφάνσεις έχουν ως στόχο να σοκάρουν τον κόσμο και να «ταρακουνούν» συνειδήσεις.

Bioethics tries to impose limits on citizens and restrict their intervention on nature. Do you believe that such measures should be imposed? Because an abundance of goods can be found in nature and we humans make such poor use of what is available to us, it is a good idea to impose limits, measures and bans so that we are able to appreciate what is being shared so generously with us. A prime example is this very space at the French School of Athens, which was opened on the occasion of this exhibition for the first time and piques the interest, awe and admiration of citizens.

Do you believe that art should have limits? Art exists to break through and surpass limits. Even the most extreme manifestations aim to shock the world and “rattle” the consciousness.

H Yasmin Levy μεγάλωσε σε οικογένεια μουσικών και ανακάλυψε τη φωνή της στην ηλικία των 17. ήρθε στη χώρα μας για να εμφανιστεί στο Badminton Theatre με τον Γιάννη Κότσιρα, Έμεινε στο Hilton AΘΗΝΩΝ και άνοιξε την καρδιά της στο περιοδικό μας. πορείτε να μας περιγράψετε τον εαυτό σας και τη σχέση σας με τη μουσική; Είμαι κόρη όχι μόνο ενός αλλά δύο τραγουδιστών. Ο πατέρας μου, Isaac Levy, αφιέρωσε τη ζωή του στη συλλογή και διατήρηση των σεφαραδίτικων και λαντίνο τραγουδιών και η μαμά μου ήταν τραγουδίστρια τζαζ. Έτσι γεννήθηκα στο πιο μουσικό οικογενειακό περιβάλλον που θα μπορούσε κάποιος να φανταστεί. Ωστόσο, έκανα ό,τι μπορούσα για να αποφύγω το να γίνω τραγουδίστρια καθώς ο πατέρας μου ήθελε όλοι μας να έχουμε ένα «φυσιολογικό» επάγγελμα ( είμαι η μικρότερη μεταξύ τεσσάρων αδερφών). Ήμουν 22 χρόνων όταν συνειδητοποίησα πως, παρόλο τον μεγάλο σεβασμό που είχα για τον πατέρα μου, που δυστυχώς δεν είναι πια μαζί μας, χρειαζόμουν να ζήσω σε αρμονία με τον εαυτό μου. Τότε ήταν που αποφάσισα να μην εξαπατώ τον εαυτό μου πλέον και άρχισα να τραγουδώ. Διακρίνετε πολιτική σημασία στη συνάντηση των πολιτισμών; Ήμουν τόσο αθώα όταν ήμουν νεότερη, καθώς πίστευα πως η μουσική μπορεί να φέρει ειρήνη. Λυπάμαι που το λέω αλλά, δυστυχώς, δεν πιστεύω πια πως αυτό είναι δυνατό, καθώς έμαθα ότι στη ζωή οι άνθρωποι αγωνίζονται για όλων των ειδών τους λόγους όπως η γη, η τροφή, το μεροκάματο και ενώ η μουσική είναι τόσο όμορφη, δεν μπορεί να λύσει όλα αυτά τα θέματα. Αυτό που όντως γνωρίζω είναι πως πέραν των πολιτικών θεμάτων, η μουσική μάς ενώνει ως ανθρώπινα όντα και μερικές φορές μάλιστα μας βοηθά να δούμε τους εχθρούς μας ως απλούς ανθρώπους. Μακάρι να μπορούσαμε να ανοίξουμε τις καρδιές και τα μυαλά μας, μακάρι να μπορούσαμε όλοι να ακούσουμε πραγματικά… Τι σας οδήγησε να επιλέξετε ένα νέο μουσικό ύφος; Η καρδιά μου. Ποτέ δεν σκέφτομαι με το κεφάλι μου. Και όταν το κάνω, τότε είναι που ξεκινούν τα προβλήματα. Πάντοτε ακούω την καρδιά μου. Τραγουδώ αυτό που αγαπά η καρδιά μου. Είμαι γενναία και δεν φοβάμαι να δοκιμάσω καινούργια πράγματα. Αλλά πάντα θυμάμαι τη θέση μου και ποτέ δεν θα τραγουδήσω κάτι που δεν καταλαβαίνω ή στο οποίο δεν πιστεύω. Τι μουσική σάς αρέσει να ακούτε; Κλασική μουσική, όπερα, Αντόνιο Μολίνα, Μπίλι Χόλιντεϊ, φλαμένκο, λαντίνο, ελληνική, τούρκικη και ιρανική μουσική. Κυρίως αγαπώ τις δυνατές φωνές, δυστυχώς δεν ενθουσιάζομαι με τις απαλές, ψιθυριστές φωνές. Ακούω ελάχιστα ποπ τραγούδια, μα προτιμώ τα πιο παλιά, που έχουν βαθύτερα νοήματα, κυρίως αυτά που μιλούν για λύπη. Θα πεθάνω με τραγούδια λύπης. Τι σημαίνει η μουσική για εσάς; Η μουσική είναι η ύπαρξή μου, είναι η ζωή μου, η σωτήρας μου, ο τρόπος μου, η λύπη μου, η ευτυχία μου, τα όνειρά μου, ο θάνατός μου, ο σκοπός μου, η αποστολή μου, αυτό που γεννήθηκα να κάνω σε αυτή τη ζωή – είναι τα πάντα για μένα. Παίζετε κάποιο όργανο; Παίζω πιάνο, σε επίπεδο που μου επιτρέπει να συνθέτω τραγούδια. Μερικές φορές εύχομαι να ήμουν σε ένα επίπεδο που θα μου επέτρεπε να παίξω και στη σκηνή. Ξεκίνησα να παίζω πιάνο όταν ήμουν 6 χρόνων και ανέκαθεν είχα καλό αυτί στη μουσική. Αλλά ήμουν λίγο επαναστάτρια και σε κάποια φάση αρνιόμουν να διαβάζω νότες. Αυτό ήταν ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα λάθη της ζωής μου. Από τότε και στο εξής, επέμενα να παίζω εξ ακοής και οι δάσκαλοί μου συνήθιζαν να μου παίζουν πρώτα το κομμάτι και

Tell us about yourself and your relationship with music. I am the daughter of not one, but two singers. My father Isaac Levy dedicated his life to collecting and preserving Sephardic and Ladino songs, and my mother was a jazz singer. So I was born into the most musical family environment imaginable.

However, I did everything I could to avoid becoming a singer because my father wanted us all to have a “normal” profession (I am the youngest of four children). It was only when I was 22 years old that I realised that although I held my late father in the highest esteem, I needed to find my own peace.

That was when I decided to stop deceiving myself and I started singing.

Is there a political significance in the meeting of cultures that you bring to pass? I was very innocent when I was younger and thought that music could bring peace. It pains me to say that I no longer think that is possible, as I have learned that in life people fight for all sorts of things including land, food, earning a living, and although music is beautiful, it cannot solve all these problems. What I do know is that despite political issues, music unites us as human beings, and sometimes helps us see our enemies as people. If only we would all open our hearts and minds, if only we would all listen…

What drove you to choose a new musical style? My heart. I never think with my head. And when I do, that is where problems begin. I always listen to my heart. I sing what my heart loves. I am brave and not afraid to try new things. But I always remember my place and I will never sing something that I do not understand or believe in.

What kind of music do you like to listen to? Classical music, opera, Antonio Molina, Billie Holiday, Flamenco Music, Ladino music, Greek music, Turkish and Iranian music. Mainly I love big voices – the small, whispering ones don’t excite me. I rarely listen to popular songs as I prefer the deep older ones and the saddest ones. I will die with sad songs.

What does music mean to you? Music is my being, it is my life, my saviour, my way, my sorrow, my happiness, my dreams, my death, my purpose, my mission, what I was born to do in this life – it is my everything.

Do you play any instruments? I play piano at a level that allows me to compose songs. I sometimes wish I could be at a level that would allow me to play on stage. I started playing the piano when I was 6 years old and always had a good ear for music. But I was a bit of a rebel and at one point I refused to read the notes. That was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. From then on, I insisted on playing by ear, so my teachers used to play the piece for me first, which I then imitated. As a result, I developed a good ear, but totally lost the ability to read music.

You have often collaborated with Greek musicians. What did you learn from them? I grew up listening to Greek music, among the many other kinds of music that I was fortunate to have in my life. As Israelis love Greek music, you would hear it everywhere, so I grew up listening to some of your greatest singers and I have been lucky enough to sing with some of them over the years. For me, some of the greatest voices are Greek. The sing-

εγώ μετά το μιμούμουν. Ως αποτέλεσμα, ανέπτυξα ένα καλό μουσικό αυτί, αλλά έχασα εντελώς την ικανότητα να διαβάζω νότες. Έχετε δουλέψει πολλές φορές με Έλληνες μουσικούς. Τι έχετε μάθει από αυτούς; Μεγάλωσα ακούγοντας ελληνική μουσική, μεταξύ πολλών άλλων ειδών μουσικής που, για καλή μου τύχη, συνόδεψαν τη ζωή μου. Καθώς η ελληνική μουσική αρέσει πολύ στους Ισραηλίτες, μπορούσες να την ακούσεις παντού. Έτσι μεγάλωσα ακούγοντας μερικούς από τους πιο σπουδαίους τραγουδιστές σας και υπήρξα αρκετά τυχερή, ώστε να τραγουδήσω με μερικούς από αυτούς κατά τη διάρκεια της μέχρι τώρα καριέρας μου. Για μένα, κάποιες από τις σπουδαιότερες φωνές είναι ελληνικές. Οι τραγουδιστές είναι τόσο πολύπλευροι και έχουν φοβερό φωνητικό έλεγχο, κάτι που θαυμάζω απόλυτα. Πόσες φορές έχετε βρεθεί στην Ελλάδα; Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, δεν είμαι σίγουρη, αλλά δεν είναι ποτέ αρκετές για μένα. Πάντοτε ενθουσιάζομαι και χαίρομαι να επιστρέφω. Είμαστε τόσο όμοιοι, οι Έλληνες και οι Ισραηλινοί, που πάντα νιώθω λες και επιστρέφω στην πατρίδα μου. Ποιες είναι οι διαφορές ανάμεσα στο πρώτο και το τελευταίο σας άλμπουμ; Από πού να ξεκινήσω; Πρώτον από όλα, εγώ. Ακούω μόνο περιστασιακά μερικά από τα τραγούδια του πρώτου μου άλμπουμ «Romance & Yasmin». Όταν το κάνω αυτό, ακούω τη φωνή ενός αθώου παιδιού, μιας πολύ νέας και αγνής γυναίκας με καθαρή ψυχή και παρθένα φωνή. Μια γυναίκα που δεν έχει ζήσει τη ζωή ακόμα, δεν έχει βιώσει τίποτε, μια γυναίκα με μεγάλα όνειρα. Και τότε υπάρχει και η φωνή που σήμερα μου ακούγεται εντελώς διαφορετική, ίσως επειδή εγώ έχω αλλάξει τον τρόπο που τραγουδώ. Επίσης, ο τρόπος με τον οποίο εκφράζω τώρα τον εαυτό μου είναι πιο ξέφρενος, με τη δική μου τρέλα. Και τέλος, τα τραγούδια. Στο πρώτο μου άλμπουμ τραγουδούσα μόνο τα παραδοσιακά Σεφαραδίτικα τραγούδια, αλλά από αυτό το άλμπουμ και μετά, είχα το θάρρος να συνθέτω τα δικά μου τραγούδια και να τραγουδώ και άλλο ρεπερτόριο που μιλούσε τη γλώσσα μου. Από την εμπειρία σας, πιστεύετε πως η μουσική μπορεί να κρατήσει τα πολιτιστικά στοιχεία ζωντανά ως ένα είδος πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς για τις μελλοντικές γενιές; Και βέβαια το πιστεύω. Είναι αυτό που πραγματικά βιώνω. Είναι σαν τον Μπετόβεν και τον Μότσαρτ: δεν είναι πια ζωντανοί, αλλά η μουσική τους έχει τη δική της ύπαρξη και θα ζει για πάντα. Το ίδιο ισχύει με το ρεμπέτικο και τη μουσική λαντίνο, τη φάντο, το φλαμένκο και άλλα. Διατηρεί το στοιχείο του πολιτισμού μας ζωντανό. Η μουσική λέει τόσο πολλά για εμάς: ποιοι είμαστε, πώς έχουμε ζήσει, τι νιώσαμε και άλλα. Η μουσική έχει να κάνει με τον πολιτισμό και τις ζωές μας.

How many times have you been to Greece? I am not sure, to be honest, but never often enough. I am always enthusiastic and so happy to come back. We are so much alike, the Greek people and Israelis, that it always feels like I am coming back home.

What are the differences between your first and your last album? Where should I begin? First of all, me. I only occasionally listen to some of the songs of my first album “Romance & Yasmin”. When I do, I hear the voice of an innocent child, a very young and untarnished woman with a pure soul and a virginal voice, a woman who hasn’t lived life yet, experienced anything yet, a woman with big dreams. And then, there is the voice that sounds totally different to me today, perhaps because I’ve changed the way I sing. The way I express myself today is much wilder, with my own craziness. And finally, the songs. In my first album I sang only Sephardic traditional songs but afterwards had the courage to compose my own songs and sing other repertoires that spoke to me.

In your experience, do you believe that music can keep cultural elements alive as a kind of heritage for future generations? Of course I do. I experience it every day. It’s like Beethoven and Mozart. They are no longer alive but their music has taken on a life of its own and will live forever and ever. It’s the same with Rebetico or Ladino music, Fado and Flamenco and others. It keeps our cultural element alive. Music tells so much about us: who we are, how we lived, what we felt and more. Music is about our culture and our lives.

Are influences more important than the choices we make in our lives?

Our lives depend on our choices. Our choices depend on our influences.

One cannot exist without the other.

Do our lives become better by knowing or ignoring things?The m ore we learn, the more we understand how ignorant we are, how little we know.

Sometimes knowledge makes us suffer, but ignoring things is worse as we won’t learn anything and run the risk of repeating bad mistakes.

What are your plans for the future? To look for new musical material, to explore, get excited, make mistakes... and mostly to sing and sing and sing.

Στη ζωή είναι οι επιρροές μας πιο σημαντικές από τις επιλογές μας; Η ζωή μας εξαρτάται από τις επιλογές μας. Οι επιλογές μας εξαρτώνται από τις επιρροές μας. Το ένα δεν μπορεί να υπάρξει χωρίς το άλλο. Η ζωή μας γίνεται καλύτερη με το να γνωρίζουμε ή με το να αγνοούμε κάποια πράγματα; Όσο περισσότερα μαθαίνουμε, τόσο περισσότερο αντιλαμβανόμαστε πόσο αδαείς είμαστε και πόσο λίγα γνωρίζουμε. Η γνώση μερικές φορές μάς κάνει να υποφέρουμε, αλλά πιστεύω πως είναι χειρότερο να αγνοούμε, καθώς τότε δεν μαθαίνουμε τίποτα και διακινδυνεύουμε την επανάληψη άσχημων λαθών. Ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σχέδιά σας; Να βρω νέο μουσικό υλικό, να εξερευνήσω, να ενθουσιαστώ, να κάνω λάθη… και κυρίως να τραγουδώ, να τραγουδώ, να τραγουδώ.

ο ελληνικό αλφαβητικό σύστημα γραφής χρησιμοποιείται από τον 8o π.Χ. αιώνα και αποτελεί την πρώτη πραγματικά αλφαβητική γραφή. Προέρχεται από το φοινικικό αλφάβητο και αποτέλεσε τον πρόγονο πολλών αλφάβητων στην Ευρώπη. Το γράμμα Ε είναι φωνήεν, πέμπτο γράμμα στη σειρά, ενώ μέχρι τη δημιουργία των αριθμών, όπως τους γνωρίζουμε σήμερα, συμβόλιζε τον αριθμό 5. Γύρω σας, μια πόλη γεμάτη από το γράμμα Ε περιμένει να την ανακαλύψετε. οδός Ερμού Ο πιο πολυσύχναστος πεζόδρομος της πόλης σε χορταίνει εικόνες και αρώματα με μια μόνο βόλτα. Η απόφαση για τη δημιουργία της πάρθηκε όταν η Αθήνα ορίστηκε ως πρωτεύουσα της χώρας το 1834. Σε σχέδια των Έντουαρντ Σάουμπερτ και Σταμάτη Κλεάνθη, η οδός Ερμού, μαζί με την οδό Αιόλου, είναι οι πρώτοι δρόμοι που χαράχτηκαν στο νεοσύστατο τότε κράτος. Ξεκινώντας από τα τότε Ανάκτορα (σήμερα, Βουλή των Ελλήνων), καταλήγει στην οδό Πειραιώς. Από τη Βιομηχανική Επανάσταση μέχρι την παγκοσμιοποίηση του εμπορίου, η Ερμού ήταν και παραμένει πρωταγωνίστρια της εμπορικής κίνησης της Αθήνας: από τα καφενεία, όπως «Η Ωραία Ελλάς», μια μικρή Βουλή, όπως την ονόμαζαν τότε λόγω της πελατείας της, μέχρι τα πρώτα καλλιτεχνικά φωτογραφεία και καταστήματα ρούχων, στην οδό Ερμού χτυπούσε η καρδιά της Αθήνας. Σήμερα, η οδός Ερμού παραμένει ένας δρόμος με πολλά πρόσωπα –εμπορικά καταστήματα, καφέ, εστιατόρια, γραφεία και υπουργεία– ενώ όσο περπατά κάποιος προς τα νότια, παλιοί τεχνίτες, υπαίθρια παζάρια και η θέα της Ακρόπολης στα αριστερά συνθέτουν τη μαγική εικόνα.

El Greco Ο Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος, ο El Greco των Ελλήνων, των Ισπανών και της παγκοσμιότητας. Ο ζωγράφος, ο αρχιτέκτονας, ο γλύπτης. Θεωρείται ένας από τους πιο σημαντικούς δημιουργούς παγκοσμίως και ενώ το έργο του δεν εκτιμήθηκε αρκούντως όσο ζούσε, αλλά και για αιώνες μετά, τον 20ό αιώνα αναγνωρίστηκε όπως του άξιζε. Πρωτοπόρος εικαστικός, γεννήθηκε στην Κρήτη και σε νεαρή ηλικία μετοίκησε στη Βενετία, εκεί όπου η βυζαντινή του τεχνοτροπία μπολιάζεται με τις αναγεννησιακές τεχνικές της Δύσης, του Τιτσιάνο, δίπλα στον οποίο μαθήτευσε, αλλά και του Τιντορέτο. Το Τολέδο της Ισπανίας, ο τελικός προορισμός του, είναι και η πόλη στην οποία θα ανθίσει. Εκεί θα δημιουργήσει τα μνημειώδη έργα, τα οποία σήμερα εκτίθενται στα σημαντικότερα μουσεία του κόσμου. Ο Ελ Γκρέκο ήταν ένας φιλόσοφος ζωγράφος, ένας ιδιοφυής κολορίστας που ενδιαφερόταν για τις παράξενες αντιθέσεις τις οποίες και αποτύπωσε στα έργα του. Έρωτας Έρωτας με την πρώτη ματιά! Στον κήπο του Ζαππείου, ένας μικρός φτερωτός θεός κρύβεται μέσα στην παραδοσιακή χλωρίδα, στις χωμάτινες διαδρομές για ήσυχους περιπάτους και στα παγκάκια. The Greek alphabet has been in use since the 8th century BC and was the first true alphabetic writing system. Derived from the Phoenician alphabet, it is the antecedent of many European alphabets.

The “E” is a vowel, the fifth letter in the alphabet, and before numbers as we know them today were created, it was the symbol for the number 5.

Ermou Street The busiest pedestrian thoroughfare in the city is full of images and aromas. It was created when Athens was declared the capital of Greece in 1834. Designed by Eduard Schauber t and Stamatis Kleanthis, Ermou and Aiolou streets were the first roads to be named in the newly created State. They led away from the then palace (currently the Greek Parliament) and ended at Pireos Street. From the industrial revolution to the globalisation of trade, Ermou Street played, and continues to play, a starring role in the commerce of Athens: it initially boasted cafés like Oraia Hellas, which its patrons dubbed the mini-parliament, as well as the first photography studios and clothes shops. The hear t of Athens beat on Ermou Street. Today, Ermou is a street with many facets –shops, cafés, restaurants, offices and ministries–, while traditional craftsmen, outdoor bazaars and a view of the Acropolis at its southern end complete the magical picture.

El Greco Domenikos Theotokopoulos was a Greek artist who became known as El Greco to Spain and the rest of the world. He was a painter, architect and sculptor and is considered one of the most important artists of all time. Although his work was not sufficiently appreciated in his lifetime and for centuries after, he finally received the recognition he long deserved in the 20th century. El Greco was born in Crete and moved to Venice at a young age, where he combined his Byzantine techniques with the Renaissance techniques of the West as a student of Titian and Tintoretto.

His final destination was Toledo, Spain, where he bloomed as an artist. It was there that he created the monumental works that are exhibited today in the most important museums of the world. El Greco was a philosophical painter, a genius colourist interested in strange contrasts, which he captured in his works. On the occasion of the 400th centenary of his death, the National Art Gallery is launching a ground-breaking exhibition at the National Sculpture Gallery: a digital museum with the monumental works of El Greco from Toledo and Escorial.

Eros (Love in Greek) Eros at first sight! A small winged god is hiding in the Zappeion garden, among the traditional flora, gravel paths, and benches. The marble statue entitled “Eros Breaking His Bow” is the work of Georgios Vroutos and dates back to 1896. According to Greek mythology, people struck by Eros’ arrows fall madly in love. The idea spread to other cultures but remains true to this day. We may not know why Eros chose to break his bow, but we can assure you that you will love walking in Zappeion.

Οδός Ερμού / Ermou Street

Για ποιο λόγο σπάει το τόξο του ο Έρωτας δεν γνωρίζουμε, αλλά εκείνο που σας διαβεβαιώνουμε είναι ότι μια βόλτα στο Ζάππειο είναι έρωτας. Ζάππειο, Λεωφόρος Βασ. Όλγας, Αθήνα.

Ερέχθειο Το Ερέχθειο βρίσκεται στον λόφο της Ακρόπολης, στη σκιά του μεγάλου πρωταγωνιστή Παρθενώνα και έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως το κομψότερο και συνάμα το πιο ιδιόρρυθμο κτήριο της αθηναϊκής Ακροπόλεως, χτισμένο τον 4ο π.Χ. αιώνα. Η ιδιορρυθμία του εξηγείται: αφενός η ανωμαλία του εδάφους, η οποία ανάγκασε τον Μνησικλή να αναπτύξει τον ναό σε τρία επίπεδα και αφετέρου ο λατρευτικός χαρακτήρας του, ο οποίος αποδίδεται σε δύο θεούς, την Αθηνά και τον Ποσειδώνα Ερεχθέα, από τον οποίο πήρε τελικά και το όνομά του ο ναός. Οι καλύτερες περιγραφές δεν αντικαθιστούν την εμπειρία τού να παρατηρήσει κάποιος το Ερέχθειο από κοντά. Η νότια πλευρά του είναι η πιο γνωστή σε όλον τον κόσμο εξαιτίας του αρχιτεκτονικού ευρήματος να τοποθετηθούν έξι αγάλματα αντί για κολόνες. Τα συγκεκριμένα αγάλματα είναι οι Καρυάτιδες, πιθανώς δημιούργημα του γλύπτη Αλκαμένη, οι οποίες κόβουν την ανάσα με την ομορφιά και τη χάρη τους. Σήμερα, στο Ερέχθειο βρίσκονται αντίγραφα των Καρυάτιδων. Από τις έξι Καρυάτιδες, οι πέντε βρίσκονται στο νέο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης ενώ η έκτη αφαιρέθηκε από τον Έλγιν και βρίσκεται πλέον στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο. Έρωτας / Eros (Love in Greek)

Erechtheion The Erechtheion is situated on the Acropolis hill, in the shadow of the great Parthenon. Built in the 4th century BC, it has been characterised as the most elegant yet odd building of the Athenian Acropolis. Its unusual nature is explained by both the unevenness of the ground, which forced Mnesicles to build the temple on three levels, and its devotional aspect, which is attributed to two gods: Athena and Poseidon Erechtheus, after whom the temple is named. Even the most eloquent of descriptions cannot replace the experience of seeing the Erechtheion up close. The south side is renowned for the six female forms standing in the place of the columns. These statues are known as the Caryatids, most likely created by the sculptor Alkamenes, and exude breath-taking beauty and poise. Copies of the Caryatids currently grace the Erechtheion. Five the six original Caryatids are located in the new Acropolis Museum, and the sixth was removed by Elgin and is now in the British Museum.

Eleftherios Venizelos Eleftherios Venizelos was a Greek politician, who established the Ministry of Aviation in 1929 and made great strides in the development of civil aviation during his term as Prime Minister. The international airport of Athens was named after him and inaugurated in 2001, replacing the airport at Elliniko. The airport was designed by the architectural firm of Charis Bougadelis, which also oversaw the expansion and renovation of the Hilton Athens. Athens International Airport welcomes each visitor to Athens as they arrive and bids them farewell on their departure. It serves over 15 million passengers each year (as recorded in 2014). Η αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη έγινε από το γραφείο του Χάρρυ Κ. Μπουγαδέλλη, το οποίο επιμελήθηκε τόσο την ανακαίνιση του Hilton Αθηνών, όσο και την επέκτασή του. Το Διεθνές Αεροδρόμιο της Αθήνας είναι το καλωσόρισμα και το αντίο κάθε επισκέπτη που επιλέγει την Αθήνα ως προορισμό. Εξυπηρετεί ετησίως περισσότερους από 15 εκατομμύρια επιβάτες (στοιχεία 2014). Evripidou Street Ever since the Municipal Market of Athens, also knows as the Varvakios, was inaugurated in 1886, the surrounding area has been associated with food trade - from craftsmen and small factories to health stores and spice shops, all of which are still in operation today. A morning walk along Evripidou is simply delightful: the aroma of cinnamon and spices emanates from Bahar spice shop, a wide selection of cold meats and salami can be found at Miran and Arapian, as well as fresh herbs and plant pots just before Athinas Street. Lovely buildings line the street, many of which are decades old. The building at the corner of Athinas and Evripidou was built in 1875 and once housed the Venetia Hotel. It is an interesting multicultural experience, with a small Chinatown on the way to Pireos Street and charming cafés near Agious Theodorous, the impressive Byzantine church dating from the 11th century. Seek out the hip bars and cafés on nearby Praxitelous and Kolokotroni streets and Karytsi and Agias Irinis squares.

συνάντηση των δύο γυναικών και η γέννηση της Discover Greek Culture Η Αλεξάνδρα Τηλιγάδα υπήρξε υπεύθυνη χορηγιών και λοιπών προγραμμάτων του Ιδρύματος Λεβέντη. Στο πλαίσιο των αρμοδιοτήτων της, δημιούργησε τον Σύνδεσμο Υποτρόφων του Ιδρύματος Λεβέντη, όπου θα βρεθεί υπότροφος η Σοφία Αντωνιάδου. Γνωρίζονται λοιπόν εδώ και 10 χρόνια, ενώ γρήγορα ανακάλυψαν ότι μοιράζονται κοινά ενδιαφέροντα και ευαισθησίες. Η δημιουργία της Discover Greek Culture χρειάστηκε πολύ χρόνο, ενέργεια και αγάπη. Η ουσία αυτής της διαφορετικής εταιρίας ξεναγήσεων κρύβεται σε δύο φράσεις: «τουρισμός δεν είναι τα αρχαία αξιοθέατα της πόλης, αλλά η ζωντάνια πίσω από αυτά» και «κάθε πόλη κρύβει υπέροχα μυστικά και ανθρώπους που ορίζουν και το ενδιαφέρον της». Δραστηριοποιούνται στην Αθήνα, τη Σαντορίνη και την Κρήτη, ενώ σύντομα θα συμπεριλάβουν στις tailor-made βόλτες τους τη Θεσσαλονίκη. How the two women met and the genesis of Discover Greek Culture Alexandra Tiligada was responsible for grants and other programmes at the Leventis Foundation. In this role, she established a scholar’s network for the Leventis Foundation, which Sophia Antoniadou joined as a scholarship recipient. They have known each other for 10 years, and discovered early on that they shared common interests and sensitivities. It took a long time to set up Discover Greek Culture, as well as a great deal of energy and devotion. The essence of this unparalleled tour company can be found in these two phrases: “tourism is not the ancient sites of a city, but the vitality behind them” and “every city has wonderful secrets and people that continually redefine them”. The company operates in Athens, Santorini and Crete and will soon offer their tailor-made walks in Thessaloniki as well.

Their groundbreaking concept and its flawless execution has already been awarded the prestigious Silver Award in the Cultural Tourism category of the 2015 Greek Tourism Awards.

Sophia and Alexandra pooled their knowledge and came up with an innovative way to present the culture of Greece through thematic tours for small groups of people. Paraphernalia Σύνεργα, εξαρτήματα, προσωπικά αντικείμενα. Αυτή είναι η ετυμολογία της λέξης «παραφερνάλια», που δίνει τον τίτλο του ιδιαίτερου αυτού concept store στα πέριξ της πλατείας Καρύτση. Ο Γιώργος Καρράς και η Αγγελική Κουτρουλάκη, οι νεαροί ιδιοκτήτες του, επέλεξαν αυτό το όνομα εξαιτίας της τοποθεσίας του καταστήματός τους, δίπλα σε εκείνα τα παραδοσιακά μαγαζιά με τα χαρτικά και τα ηλεκτρολογικά υλικά. Πρόκειται για έναν χώρο μινιμαλιστικής προσέγγισης, που κάθε αντικείμενό του φέρει την αισθητική των ιδιοκτητών. Μικροπράγματα και έπιπλα δεν τοποθετούνται τυχαία στα ράφια, αλλά δημιουργούν μια ολοκληρωμένη πρόταση για το περιβάλλον του δικού σου χώρου. Βοηθητικά τραπεζάκια από ανακυκλωμένα υλικά, χειροποίητα σαπούνια από κρητικό ελαιόλαδο, tote τσάντες με ψηφιακές εκτυπώσεις από το αστικό τοπίο της Αθήνας, vintage σχολικές καρέκλες της δεκαετίας του '50, ακόμα και ένα coffee table από κουτί πυρομαχικών είναι μερικά μόνο από τα πράγματα που συνθέτουν τον μαγικό κόσμο του Paraphernalia.

Lena Papaligoura, Rafika Chawishe, Maria Kitsou: three women, friends and colleagues, actresses and concerned citizens at an age where experience allows them to make judgments, but still young and fresh enough to question, dream and express passion. The curtain of the National Theatre has just dropped on Jean Genet’s “The Maids”, in which they won over the heart of Athenian audiences and the three women are ready to embark on new endeavours. They sat down with us and discussed professional, personal and social relationships.

Ποια είναι τα καλοκαιρινά καλλιτεχνικά σας πλάνα; Λένα Παπαληγούρα: Αφού τελείωσαν οι «Αδελφοί Καραμάζοφ» στο Θέατρο Τέχνης, το καλοκαίρι θα ταξιδέψουμε σε διάφορα φεστιβάλ στην Ελλάδα για την «Κατερίνα» – είναι μια νέα συνθήκη για εμάς και πιστεύω ότι το να παίζω π.χ. στο προαύλιο μιας εκκλησίας μέχρι σε έναν εργοστασιακό χώρο θα με τροφοδοτήσει με ιδιαίτερα συναισθήματα. Μαρία Κίτσου: Μετά την παράσταση των «Τρωάδων» του Εθνικού Θεάτρου σε σκηνοθεσία Χατζάκη στην Επίδαυρο, 3 και 4 Ιουλίου, θα περιοδεύσουμε στην Αθήνα και σε όλη την Ελλάδα, ενώ υπάρχει περίπτωση να ταξιδέψουμε και στο Πεκίνο τον Αύγουστο! Ραφίκα Σαουίς: Ετοιμάζω για τον Σεπτέμβριο τις «Τρωάδες» με πραγματικά θύματα πολέμου, σε παραγωγή του Γιώργου Λυκιαρδόπουλου, και επίσης έχω στα σκαριά την πρώτη μου ταινία μεγάλου μήκους, για την οποία αρχίζω γυρίσματα τον Οκτώβριο. Η ταινία είναι ένα σκληρό, μεταφυσικό παραμύθι για μια αυτοκτονική ηρωίδα. Το δύσκολο casting όμως αφορά στις «Τρωάδες» και στα θύματα πολέμου. Έχουμε ζητήσει από τη Διεθνή Αμνηστία, την Praxis και το Σχολείο Μεταναστών να μας βοηθήσουν και νομίζω ότι αυτό θα είναι το πιο δύσκολο casting που έχω κάνει ποτέ, γιατί θα πρέπει άνθρωποι που έχουν υποφέρει να αντέξουν να μπουν πίσω από μια μάσκα και να μιλήσουν.

What are your artistic plans for the summer?

Lena Papaligoura: Now that “The Brothers Karamazov” has finished its run at the Art Theatre, we are taking “Katerina” on a festival tour in Greece. It is a new experience for us and I hope to play the role at a variety of venues, from a church courtyard to the premises of a factory for example, which is bound to generate unique sensations.

Maria Kitsou: After the National Theatre’s production of “The Trojan Women”, directed by Hatzakis, at Epidaurus on July 3rd and 4th, we will go on tour in Athens and the rest of Greece. We may even travel to Beijing in August!

Rafika Chawishe: I’m working with victims of war in preparation for Giorgos Lykiardopoulos’ production of “The Trojan Women” in September, and my first feature length film starts shooting in October. The film relates the harsh, metaphysical story of its suicidal heroine. It was quite difficult, however, to cast war victims in “The Trojan Women”. We spoke with Amnesty International, Praxis and the School for Immigrants and asked for their assistance. I believe that this will be the most difficult casting call I’ve participated in because we need people who have suffered deeply to put on a mask and talk.

Στη δική σας δουλειά υπάρχουν «ταμπέλες»; Μ. Κ.: Βεβαίως, είμαστε χωρισμένοι σε ποιοτικούς και εμπορικούς. Το ήθος όμως δεν αφορά στο ποιο έργο θα επιλέξεις. Εγώ μόνο έτσι κρίνω τους ανθρώπους: από το ήθος τους. Λ. Π.: Νομίζω ότι η δική μας γενιά, επειδή δυσκολεύτηκε περισσότερο και πιο άμεσα μετά τις σπουδές της, έμαθε να μην κάνει τόσο κάθετους διαχωρισμούς και να λειτουργεί πιο «δεμένα». Πιστεύω ότι την ποιότητα την έχεις μέσα σου και καλό είναι να τη βγάζεις σε ό,τι κάνεις – δεν είναι η υποκριτική μόνο ο χώρος στον οποίο θα βγει. Μιλάμε συνέχεια για τον πολιτισμό και ξεχνάμε ότι πολιτισμός είναι η καθημερινότητα και η επαφή μας με τους ανθρώπους. Μίλα ευγενικά, μην παρκάρεις σε θέση αναπήρων και μετά, παρακολούθησε θεατρικές παραστάσεις. Διάβασα σε μια συνέντευξη της Αμαλίας Μουτούση τη φράση «Δεν μπορείς να έχεις σκηνικό ήθος, αν παρκάρεις σε θέση αναπήρου». Το λέω και ανατριχιάζω – είναι έτσι ακριβώς. Έχετε την πολυτέλεια σήμερα να επιλέγετε τις δουλειές σας; Ρ. Σ.: Το γεγονός ότι μάθαμε στα δύσκολα σημαίνει πως μάθαμε μόνοι μας να δημιουργούμε τις καταστάσεις και να μην περιμένουμε απαραίτητα να χτυπήσει το τηλέφωνό μας. Κάνουμε συλλογικές δουλειές, ξεκινώντας με πολύ χαμηλά budget, πάνω στα οποία επενδύουμε όλο μας το «είναι», με την πληρω-

Do you notice any prejudices in your professional field?

M. K.: Of course. We are categorised as either quality actors or commercial ones. Ethics, however, are unrelated to the work you choose. And I judge people by their ethics.

L. P.: I think that because our generation faced greater difficulties directly after our studies, we tend to be stricter in our divisions and more “restrained”.

I believe that we find quality in ourselves and should apply it to everything we do – acting isn’t the only discipline in which it comes into play. We talk about culture, but nonetheless forget that daily routine is culture, as is contact with people. Be polite, don’t park in the handicapped spot and then go to the theatre. I read an interview with Amalia Moutousi where she said “You cannot have stage ethos if you’ve parked in a handicapped spot.” I say it and shudder – that’s exactly right.

Do you have the luxury to select your roles?

R. C.: The fact that we have learned to face difficulties means that we create our own opportunities and don’t necessarily sit by the phone waiting for it to ring. We collaborate with other actors, starting with a small budget in which we invest our very “being”, often being paid after a long delay.

μή να έρχεται συχνά μετά από μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα. Και αυτή είναι η καλή όψη της σημερινής κατάστασης στην Ελλάδα: εμπιστευόμαστε περισσότερο ο ένας τον άλλον, όταν υπάρχει, φυσικά, βάση και ουσία και δεν εκμεταλλευόμαστε τις καταστάσεις. Προφανώς, χρειάζεται και υπομονή – και ο Γιώργος Λάνθιμος μέχρι να θριαμβεύσει με τον «Κυνόδοντα» είχε δουλέψει 15 χρόνια στη διαφήμιση, έχοντας δημιουργήσει ήδη έναν κύκλο ανθρώπων που ήξεραν το ήθος και την ποιότητα της δουλειάς του. Κι εγώ τώρα ξεκινάω μια ταινία μεγάλου μήκους, αλλά υπάρχουν ήδη άνθρωποι που με ξέρουν καθώς και τον τρόπο που δουλεύω από ταινίες μικρού μήκους που έκανα τα προηγούμενα χρόνια. Λ. Π.: Ξέρω ότι δεν είναι αυτονόητο να έχω επιλογή και απολαμβάνω τόσο το γεγονός ότι έχω δουλειές, και μάλιστα που μου αρέσουν πολύ. Το μόνο αρνητικό είναι ότι σε αυτή τη δουλειά και σε περίοδο κρίσης, δεν μας δίνεται η δυνατότητα να έχουμε ένα χρονικό διάστημα «εκτός». Το καλοκαίρι, για παράδειγμα, δεν ήθελα καν να ακούσω κάποια επαγγελματική πρόταση, για να μη δελεαστώ. Ένιωθα ότι δεν πρέπει να κάνω κάτι, ότι δεν θα είμαι καλό υλικό στα χέρια ενός σκηνοθέτη για πρόβα. Ο ηθοποιός πρέπει να έχει χρόνο να διαβάζει και να παρατηρεί γύρω του, για να είναι δημιουργικός. Η δουλειά σας είναι η ζωή σας; Μ. Κ.: Συμβαίνει κατά περιόδους να είναι η ζωή μου, αλλά για μένα προτεραιότητα έχει η ζωή και μετά έρχεται το θέατρο. Μας χρεώνουν ότι εμείς οι καλλιτέχνες πρέπει να είμαστε απολύτως αφοσιωμένοι και δοσμένοι στο έργο μας, αλλά δεν συμφωνώ καθόλου με αυτό. Μου έχει συμβεί βέβαια να δουλεύω πάρα πολύ, αλλά αν δεν έχεις χρόνο για φίλους, προσωπική ζωή, βόλτες, ή ό,τι άλλο σε ευχαριστεί, σίγουρα δεν μπορείς και να δουλέψεις καλά. Λ. Π.: Για μένα η δουλειά είναι αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της ζωής μου. Πηγή χαράς και ευτυχίας, σε σημείο που καμμιά φορά με προβληματίζει. Προφανώς, έχει να κάνει με το γεγονός ότι η υποκριτική με κάνει να νιώθω ελεύθερη και μου δίνει τη δυνατότητα να ζω το κομμάτι της φαντασίωσης, κάτι το οποίο θεωρώ απαραίτητο συστατικό της καθημερινότητάς μου. Αν όμως δεν ζεις τη ζωή, σίγουρα δεν μπορείς να τροφοδοτείς και το θέατρο. Η προσωπική σας ζωή είναι μέσα από το θέατρο; Ρ. Σ.: Εμένα, όχι. Ο έρωτας είναι χημεία και δεν ξέρεις ποτέ, πώς και πού θα βρεις τον άνθρωπό σου. Δεν έχω ένα check list γι’ αυτό –συνήθως, όμως, τυχαίνει να είναι από τον χώρο της μουσικής. Μ. Κ.: Εμένα οι προσωπικές μου σχέσεις είναι πάντα μέσα από τον χώρο, χωρίς ανταγωνισμούς και ζήλιες. Πάντα με σύμπνοια, καταπληκτική συνεργασία και αλληλοβοήθεια. Λ. Π.: Εμείς οι ηθοποιοί έχουμε έναν βιορυθμό που αν κάποιος δεν έχει δουλέψει με αυτόν τον τρόπο ίσως να μην μπορεί να παρακολουθήσει τη ζωή μας. Από την άλλη, μου έχει συμβεί να συνυπάρχω με άνθρωπο εκτός χώρου, φιλότεχνο ωστόσο, και οφείλω να ομολογήσω πως η ματιά του πάνω στη δουλειά μου ήταν εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα. Τι ερωτεύεστε σε έναν άντρα; Λ. Π.: Την τρυφερότητα και το χιούμορ. Μ. Κ.: Το μυστήριο και την ευγένεια. Ρ. Σ.: Την τρυφερότητα, την εξυπνάδα και φυσικά την ευγένεια. Ο έρωτας κρατάει; Ρ. Σ.: Εγώ το πιστεύω. Παρότι δεν το βλέπουμε συχνά, αν υπάρχει έστω και ένα ζευγάρι που να έχει αντέξει στον χρόνο, υπάρχει ελπίδα για πολλά περισσότερα. other more, provided that there is the basis and substance to do so, and we don’t exploit situations. Patience is a must – and it took Giorgos Lanthimos 15 years in advertising before he found success with “Dogtooth”, having created a circle of associates who were familiar with the ethos and quality of his work. And I’m about to start work on a feature film, but there are already people who know me and the way I work from the short films I made in the past.

L. P.: I know that having a choice is a privilege and I revel in the fact that I have work and that I like what I am doing very much. The only negative aspect is that in this period of financial crisis we cannot have “down time”. In summer, for example, I didn’t used to want to be approached with a professional offer so I wouldn’t be tempted. I felt that I shouldn’t do anything, that I wouldn’t be able to do my best work for a director in rehearsal. Actors must have the time to read and observe those around them in order to be creative.

Is your work your life?

M. K.: It is, at times, my life, but I believe that life has to take priority over the theatre. As artists we are told that we must be absolutely dedicated to and occupied by our work, but I don’t agree. I have been consumed by my work, but if you don’t have time for friends, a personal life, outings or anything else that gives you pleasure, then you certainly will not be productive.

L. P.: For me, work is an integral part of my life. It is a source of joy and happiness, so much so that it sometimes confounds me. It is probably because acting makes me feel free and enables me to live a fantasy, which I consider an essential component of my daily life. But if you don’t live life, you cannot give your all to the theatre.

Is your personal life connected to the theatre?

R. C .: No. Love is chemistry and you never know how and where you will find romance. I don’t have a checklist – but it’s usually connected with the world of music.

M. K.: My personal relationships are always in the acting sphere, but without rivalry and jealousy. Always with compassion, amazing collaboration and mutual support.

L. P.: We actors have a biorhythm that is difficult to follow if you haven’t experienced it personally. On the other hand, I have had a relationship with someone outside the theatre, but a lover of the arts nonetheless, and I must admit that his viewpoint of my work was extremely interesting.

What makes you fall in love with a man?

L. P.: Tenderness and humour.

M. K.: Mystery and affection.

R. C.: Tenderness, intelligence and affection.

Does love last?

Ξεκινήσαμε το 1920. Ο κινηματογράφος ιδρύθηκε από έναν Έλληνα κομμωτή που ζούσε στο Παρίσι – αυτός τον ονόμασε Σινέ Παρί. Είναι ένας από τους πιο παλιούς στην Αθήνα. Το 1960 έκλεισε λόγω οικονομικής κρίσης και το 1986 πια τον ανοίξαμε, ξανά, εμείς. Ο πατέρας μου αγαπούσε από μικρός τον κινηματογράφο. Έκανε κοπάνες από το σχολείο για να πάει σινεμά. Τον ενθουσίαζε η ιδέα! Η αγαπημένη του ταινία είναι το «Σινεμά Ο Παράδεισος». Εδώ έχει έρθει ο Τζέρεμι Άιρονς, η Φανί Αρντάν και ο Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου που έχει δηλώσει λάτρης του σινεμά. Οι προτάσεις γάμου στο τέλος της ταινίας δεν είναι ασυνήθιστο σκηνικό. Λαμβάνουμε επίσης πάρα πολλά mail από το εξωτερικό (Ινδία, Γερμανία, Καναδά, Αμερική) που μας λένε ότι έχουν ακούσει τα καλύτερα για εμάς και μας ρωτάνε τι ταινίες παίζουμε. Μας έχουν πάρει συνεντεύξεις από κανάλια του εξωτερικού: από το γαλλικό TV5, από ένα καναδικό και ένα αγγλικό κανάλι. Τους έχει φανεί ιδιαίτερο και πρωτότυπο το γεγονός ότι στην Ελλάδα δεν κάνουμε μεταγλώττιση της ταινίας. Επίσης, μας έχει κάνει αφιέρωμα το περιοδικό Monocle και η εφημερίδα Guardian για δύο συνεχόμενες χρονιές. Στο κυλικείο υπάρχει μεγάλη ποικιλία από malt whiskies. Όσοι ξέρουν, καταλαβαίνουν ότι έχουμε την καλύτερη κάβα από όλους τους θερινούς της Αθήνας. Πάντως, δεν μπορείς να ζεις περιμένοντας μια εισπρακτική επιτυχία – με τον κινηματογράφο δεν μπορείς να κάνεις προβλέψεις.

Cine Paris open air cinema, which is one of the oldest in the city, was founded in 1920 by a Greek hairdresser who lived in Paris – it was he who named it the "Cine Paris". In 1960, it was closed because of financial difficulties, and we re-opened it in 1986. My father loved the cinema from a young age. He would play truant from school to see a film. He was fascinated by the idea of it!

His favourite film is “Cinema Paradiso”. Jeremy Irons and Fanny Ardant have been here, as well as Vangelis Papathanassiou, who is a self-proclaimed cinephile. We have borne witness to wedding proposals at the end of a film, and regularly receive mail from abroad (India, Germany, Canada and the USA) telling us they have heard many good things about us and asking what movies are on the programme. International television networks have interviewed us, including TV5 from France, a British and a Canadian channel. They were surprised that we don’t dub films in Greece. Moreover, Monocle magazine and The Guardian both paid tribute to the cinema for two consecutive years.

The snack bar boasts a wide variety of malt whiskies.

Those in the know are well aware that we offer the best selection of beverages of all the open air cinemas in Athens.

Μια ιδιαιτερότητα της «Αίγλης» είναι ο «πριβέ» χώρος: μπορείς να τρως από το εστιατόριό της και, συγχρόνως, να βλέπεις σινεμά. Εκεί, μάλιστα, είχαμε πάρα πολλές προτάσεις γάμου. Η ιστορία της «Αίγλης» ξεκίνησε το 1903. Εμείς την έχουμε από το 2006. Ο προαύλιος χώρος του Ζαππείου, παλιά, ήταν νυφοπάζαρο, αλλά και σημείο συνάντησης λογίων. Κάποτε οι θερινοί κινηματογράφοι, λόγω της τεχνολογίας, δεν μπορούσαν να έχουν ταινίες πρώτης προβολής. Από τότε που αναλάβαμε τον κινηματογράφο και επειδή ανήκουμε στον ευρύτερο όμιλο που έχει και τα Village Cinemas, έχουμε έναν καλύτερο προγραμματισμό. Όσο οι ταινίες ήταν οι 35άρες, υπήρχαν προβλήματα που τα αντιμετωπίζαμε παίρνοντας κόπιες ταινιών πρώτης προβολής από τα Village. Από πέρυσι, που ο κινηματογράφος ψηφιοποιήθηκε ολοκληρωτικά και τα στούντιο παράγουν σε ψηφιακή μορφή, παίρνουμε ακόμη πιο εύκολα ταινίες πρώτης προβολής. Τα μεγάλα στούντιο έχουν αλλάξει τη φιλοσοφία τους: παλιότερα προόριζαν τα blockbusters τους μόνο για τις χειμερινές αίθουσες, ενώ τώρα λειτουργούν με δύο σεζόν, τη μία κοντά στα Χριστούγεννα και την άλλη γύρω στον Ιούλιο. Τα έργα που διαλέγουμε ταιριάζουν με το προφίλ του χώρου: δεν επιλέγουμε blockbusters που παίζονται στα σύγχρονα σινεμά και τα multiplex. Προτιμούμε ανεξάρτητες παραγωγές, γαλλόφωνο κινηματογράφο, αλλά και Γούντι Άλεν. Το κοινό της «Αίγλης» γενικότερα είναι πιο “senior”, όμως ο κινηματογράφος φέρνει και νεότερο κόσμο. Στο κυλικείο έχουμε πολύ ωραίο σουβλάκι, το οποίο φέτος θα συνοδεύεται με πιτούλες και τζατζίκι χωρίς σκόρδο.

One of the unusual features of "Aigli" is that you can enjoy a meal in the restaurant while watching a film. We have had many wedding proposals in this private room.

The Aigli dates from 1903, and we took it over in 2006.

The courtyard of the Zappeion was at one time both a “bride bazaar” and the preferred meeting place for scholars. In the past, open air cinemas were not permitted to screen new releases. However, since we undertook the cinema and because we are a member of the Village Cinema group, we can now offer an “improved” programme. When the films were in 35mm form, we faced some problems and addressed them by acquiring copies of new releases from Village Cinemas. Since last year, when cinema became fully digitized and all studios released in digital format, it has become easier than ever to get access to new releases. The large studios have changed their philosophy: there was a time that blockbusters were only released in winter, but there are two seasons now, one at Christmas and the other in June.

We choose films that suit the space – we don’t screen the blockbusters that can be seen in modern cinemas and multiplexes. We prefer independent productions, the French cinema and Woody Allen. Aigli audiences tend to be on the “senior” side, but the cinema also attracts the younger generations.

Our snack bar offers excellent souvlaki with mini pitas and garlic-free tzatziki.

Ο κινηματογράφος αυτός ιδρύθηκε το 1938, αλλά στα δικά μου χέρια ήρθε πριν από 25 χρόνια. Στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1950 ανέβαιναν εδώ βαριετέ, όπου μπορούσε κάποιος να απολαύσει τα μεγαλύτερα αστέρια του θεάτρου. Δίπλα, ήταν η σκηνή του «Μποέμ», όπου παιζόταν Καραγκιόζης. Με τη λειτουργία του Ζέφυρου ασχολήθηκε ο σύζυγός μου, ο οποίος αποφάσισε να πορευθεί αποκλειστικά προς το σινεφίλ ύφος και κοινό. Ξεκινήσαμε με ταινίες μεγάλων σκηνοθετών, όπως «Ο Πόλεμος Των Κουμπιών» (Ιβ Ρομπέρ), «Το Χάος» (Αδελφοί Ταβιάνι), «Ουζάλα» (Ακίρα Κουροσάβα), «Ο Καιρός Των Τσιγγάνων» (Εμίρ Κουστουρίτσα). Το κοινό που έρχεται σε εμάς λατρεύει τον «Ζέφυρο». Είναι συγκινητικό να ακούς ανθρώπους, και μάλιστα ηθοποιούς όπως ο Γιώργος Χρανιώτης, να λένε σε συνεντεύξεις πως ο «Ζέφυρος» είναι «το σπίτι τους». Και δεν είναι ο μόνος. Ο Μάριος Ιορδάνου, ο Κολλάτος και πολλοί άλλοι αναφέρονται σε αυτόν τον κινηματογράφο. Παίζουμε πάντα παλιές ταινίες σε επανέκδοση. Η φετινή έναρξη είναι με μια πολύ παλιά ταινία του Χίτσκοκ, το «Νέα και Αθώα». Το «Ουζάλα» και το «Δημόσια Γυναίκα» υπήρξαν, στο παρελθόν, από τις μεγαλύτερες εισπρακτικές μας επιτυχίες. Δεν φέρνουμε εμπορικές ταινίες. Οι ταινίες μας είναι τελείως διαφορετικές. Και μόνο που κοιτάς τους πελάτες, την ώρα που βγαίνουν, να αναφωνούν «τι αριστούργημα!» και να σου δίνουν συγχαρητήρια, είσαι ικανοποιημένος. Σκεφθείτε ότι το δικό μας κοινό έρχεται στον κινηματογράφο μας χωρίς καν να γνωρίζει τι ταινία παίζουμε. Στο δε κυλικείο, έχουμε καρυδόπιτα με ινδική καρύδα.

Although the cinema was founded in 1938, it passed into my hands 25 years ago. In the mid-1950s variety shows were performed here, featuring the greatest stars of the theatre. The “Boheme” stage was right next door, with Karagiozis puppet shows. My husband took over the running of the Cine Zephyros and decided that we should focus exclusively on the cinema. We started out with films from important directors like “The War of the Buttons” (Yves Robert), “Chaos” (the Taviani brothers), “Dersu Uzala” (Akira Kurosawa), and “The Time of the Gypsies” (Emir Kusturica). Our audiences adore the "Zephyros". It is moving to hear people say that "Zephyros" is like their home. Actor Giorgos Chraniotis even mentioned us in an interview. And he wasn’t the only one. Marios Iordanou, Kollatos and many others have spoken about the cinema. We always screen old, re-released films. Our first film this year is “Young and Innocent”, a very old Alfred Hitchcock film. In the past, “Dersu Uzala” and “The Public Woman” were two of our biggest successes. We don’t screen blockbusters. Our films are completely different. Hearing our customers exclaim “what a masterpiece” and offer us congratulations as they are leaving the cinema is very fulfilling. Imagine that our audiences come to the Zephyros without checking what is on. And our snack bar? We have walnut cake with Indian coconut.

Η δημοσιογράφος του CNN που μας χαρακτήρισε ως τον καλύτερο κινηματογράφο στον κόσμο, αναγνώρισε μεν την αξιοπρεπή κατάσταση της αίθουσας, αλλά τόνισε κυρίως πως αποτελεί μοναδικό θέαμα παγκοσμίως το να βλέπεις ταινία και ταυτόχρονα να βλέπεις την Ακρόπολη. Όταν ανέλαβα τον κινηματογράφο το 1980, είχα τριάντα χρόνια προϋπηρεσία στο επάγγελμα. Ένας δημοσιογράφος του BBC μού έδωσε συγχαρητήρια: «Οι τουαλέτες στο σπίτι μου δεν είναι τόσο καθαρές, όσο στον κινηματογράφο σου!». Έχουμε ζήσει υπέροχες στιγμές. Κάποτε στα διαλείμματα είχαμε βαριετέ με τον Μάικ που έκανε ζογκλερικά, ανέβαιναν στη σκηνή τραγουδιστές, ακόμη και ο Κηλαηδόνης είχε βγει σε μια avant premiere μας, που θεωρήθηκε μια από τις μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες σε θερινό σινεμά. Από εδώ έχουν περάσει ο Χατζηχρήστος, ο Αυλωνίτης, ο Οικονομίδης ως κονφερασιέ, η Βασιλειάδου, ο Ρίζος, όλοι οι παλιοί... Εδώ και πολλά χρόνια προβάλλουμε κλασικό, κυρίως αμερικανικό, κινηματογράφο. Τον προτιμάει το κοινό. Φέτος θα προβληθούν τέσσερις κλασικές ταινίες: «Οι Συνωμότες» με τον Πίτερ Σέλερς του 1957, «Διακοπές στη Βενετία» του Ντέιβιντ Λιν με τον Ροσάνο Μπράτσι και την Κάθριν Χέπμπορν, «Μάρνι» του Χίτσκοκ και «Ένα Καυτό Καλοκαίρι» με τον Πολ Νιούμαν. Στο κυλικείο σερβίρεται βυσσινάδα, ποτό βύσσινο, γλυκό βύσσινο και τώρα αναμένεται από το Αγρίνιο σπέσιαλ σπιτικό κρασί. Θα υπάρχει και τσίπουρο χωριάτικο καθώς και αυγοτάραχο Αιτωλικού.

We were named the best cinema in the world by a CNN journalist, who made a point of mentioning that it is a unique experience to watch a film with a view of the Acropolis in the background. When I took over the cinema in 1980, I had already been in the profession for 30 years. A BBC journalist was congratulatory: “The bathrooms in my home aren’t nearly as clean as the ones in your cinema!”

We have had some wonderful moments. There was the period when we offered variety shows during the intermission, with Mike juggling, singers on stage and even a night when the singer Kilaidonis graced us with his presence at an avant-premiere that proved one of the most successful open air cinema events ever. Illustrious visitors to the Thisio include Chatzichristos, Avlonitis, Economidis as a Master of Ceremonies, Vasiliadou, Rizos and all the old great actors… For the past several years we have screened classic films, mostly American.

Our audiences seem to prefer them. This year I will be screening four classic films: “Dr. Strangeglove” with Peter Sellers (1957), David Lean’s “Summertime” with Rossano Brazzi and Katherine Hepburn, Hitchcock’s “Marnie”, and “The Long, Hot Summer” with Paul Newman.

The snack bar offers juice, liqueur and sweet preserves made from sour cherries, and I am expecting delivery of homemade wine from Agrinio. I will also serve “tsipouro” (Greek spirit) from the village and “avgotaraho” (bottarga) from Aitoliko.

Ο κινηματογράφος άρχισε να λειτουργεί το 1979. Ήμουν στη «Ριβιέρα» με τον θείο του σημερινού ιδιοκτήτη Σωτήρη Ρίγγα, Θόδωρο (ιδιοκτήτης των «Ριβιέρα», «Βοξ», «Παναθήναια» και του χειμερινού «Αγορά»), όταν το αποφασίσαμε. Βρήκαμε αυτό το οικόπεδο στο Κολωνάκι και το φτιάξαμε. Παρότι είμαι υπάλληλος, έμεινα από τότε στον κινηματογράφο γιατί ήμασταν αδελφικοί φίλοι – δυστυχώς, έφυγε από τη ζωή πριν από δύο χρόνια. Ο δεσμός μας ήταν τόσο ισχυρός που φέτος συμπληρώνω τριάντα έξι χρόνια στον ίδιο κινηματογράφο και δεν σκέφτηκα ποτέ να φύγω. Αυτό που τον κάνει μοναδικό είναι ότι οι περισσότεροι τον θεωρούν «ησυχαστήριο». Είναι ένα ωραίο κηπάκι μέσα στο Κολωνάκι, όπου ηρεμείς και ξεχνιέσαι. Τα αξιομνημόνευτα περιστατικά είναι πολλά όπως και οι διάσημοι που μας έχουν επισκεφτεί. Πρωθυπουργούς και υπουργούς π.χ. βλέπαμε όλη την ώρα: ερχόταν ο Ράλλης φυσικά, αργότερα ο Σημίτης, έπειτα και ο Κώστας Καραμανλής. Πληρότητα έχουμε αρκετά συχνά. Στην ταινία «Σημασία Έχει ν ’Αγαπάς» του Αντρέι Ζουλάφσκι, η ουρά είχε φτάσει μέχρι το τέλος του δρόμου. Παίζουμε και επανεκδόσεις, όταν μπορούμε. Φέτος, στις 9 Ιουλίου, παίξαμε την ταινία «Με Διπλή Ταυτότητα» του Μπίλι Γουάιλντερ, 19η καλύτερη ταινία όλων των εποχών, σύμφωνα με το IMDb. Στο κυλικείο έχουμε μια πολύ καλής ποιότητας τυρόπιτα, αλλά και τοστ με γραβιέρα και ζαμπόν. Ξεκινήσαμε να προσφέρουμε τη συγκεκριμένη τυρόπιτα από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 και μέχρι πριν από πέντε με έξι χρόνια, τη ζυμώναμε μόνοι μας.

The cinema first opened in 1979. I was at the Riviera cinema with Thodoros (owner of the Riviera, Vox, Panathinaia open air cinemas and the Agora winter cinema), the nephew of Sotiris Riggas, the current owner, when we came up with the idea – we found this plot of land in Kolonaki and built the Cine Athinaia. Although I am an employee, I stayed with the cinema because we were as close as brothers, and Thodoros unfortunately passed away two years ago. Our bond was so strong that I have been working here for the past thirty-six years and never once considered leaving.

What makes the Athinaia unique is that many people consider it their summer “hideaway”. It is a lovely little garden in Kolonaki where you can relax and forget.

There have been many memorable events over the years and many famous people have visited. For example, Prime Ministers and Ministers regularly came to the Athinaia, including Rallis, Simitis and Kostas Karamanlis.

We are often at capacity. When we screened Andrzej Zulawski’s “That Most Impor tant Thing: Love”, the queue stretched to the end of the road. We also screen re-released films. On 9 July this year we will be presenting Billy Wilder’s “Double Indemnity”, which is ranked #19 in IMDb’s Top 100 Greatest Movies of All Time.

Our snack bar offers excellent cheese pie and toasted sandwiches with Gruyere and ham. We have been serving this very cheese pie since the early 1980s, and even prepared it ourselves up until five or six years ago.

ώδεκα χρόνια πριν, μια πανύψηλη καλλονή από το Χαϊδάρι έλαμπε επάνω στην πασαρέλα της ομορφιάς φορώντας το στέμμα της Σταρ Ελλάς. Ωστόσο, δεν επέλεξε να επενδύσει στην ομορφιά της. Αριστούχος του τμήματος Επικοινωνίας και ΜΜΕ του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, πόνταρε σε ό,τι θα έφερνε ισορροπία στη ζωή της: τη γνώση και την οικογένεια! Η Μαριέττα Χρουσαλά φωτογραφήθηκε στην πισίνα του Hilton Αθηνών και μας μίλησε για όλα.

Twelve years ago, a tall beautiful woman from a western suburb of Athens stood glowing on stage as she was crowned Star Hellas.

However, she opted not to capitalise on her beauty. Graduating with honours from the Mass Media and Communications faculty of the University of Athens, she gambled on what she believed would bring balance to her life: education and family! Marietta Chroussala was photographed at the pool of the Hilton Athens and shared her thoughts with us.

Για πολλούς η ζωή σου μοιάζει με της πριγκίπισσας του παραμυθιού. Το πιστεύεις εσύ αυτό; Όχι, εγώ δεν το πιστεύω αυτό. Το πιστεύει η κόρη μου βέβαια, γιατί είναι σε αυτή την ηλικία που αγαπάει όλες τις πριγκίπισσες των παραμυθιών και στα μάτια της είμαι και εγώ μία από αυτές. Πέρα από τα αστεία όμως, μια κοπέλα σαν όλες τις άλλες είμαι, απλώς τυχερή αφού βρήκα έναν άνθρωπο με τον οποίο μοιραζόμαστε πάρα πολλά κοινά. Ανακαλύψαμε μαζί την αγάπη, σε σωστή ηλικία –και αυτό είναι ό,τι χρειάζεσαι στη ζωή. Ύστερα ήρθαν τα παιδάκια και πολλαπλασίασαν την ευτυχία σε βαθμό που δεν περιγράφεται.

Many believe that you have lived the life of a princess in a fairy-tale. Is that how you feel? No, I don’t. My daughter does, however, because she is at the age where she adores princesses in fairy-tales and I am one in her eyes.

Joking apart, I’m just a girl like all the others, who was lucky enough to find a man who shares my beliefs. We discovered love together, at the right age –and that is all you need in life. Then our children entered our lives, happiness reached unimaginable heights.

Πόσο σας άλλαξε η μητρότητα; Πάρα πολύ. Το πρώτο παιδί αλλάζει το ζευγάρι, τους ρυθμούς, την καθημερινότητα, ακόμη και την άποψη που έχεις για την αγάπη. Ξαφνικά, με τη γέννηση του παιδιού, γεννιέται και ένα άλλο συναίσθημα, μια διαφορετική αγάπη, και λες «πού ήταν όλο αυτόν τον καιρό αυτή η αγάπη; Γιατί δεν την είχα βρει νωρίτερα;». Αλλάζει τελείως και το πρόγραμμά σου, αφού ακολουθείς πια το ωράριο του παιδιού σου. Και μετά έρχεται το δεύτερο παιδί και οι συνθήκες αλλάζουν και πάλι από την αρχή. Είστε φίλη με την Ελληνοαμερικανίδα ηθοποιό, παρουσιάστρια και δημοσιογράφο Μαρία Μενούνος. Πώς προέκυψε η φιλία σας; Με τη Μαρία γνωριστήκαμε μέσω ενός κοινού μας φίλου, ο οποίος μας έφερε κοντά επειδή ξέρει και εκείνη και εμένα, και μας είχε φανταστεί να κάνουμε παρέα. Και είχε δίκιο, διότι αυτομάτως ταιριάξαμε. Κάναμε παρέα, είχαμε πάει στην Αμερική, είχε έρθει εδώ, είχαμε κάνει μαζί διακοπές. Κατά τη διάρκεια την εγκυμοσύνης στην κόρη μου, μου πρότεινε να τη βαφτίσει. Έτσι γίναμε και κουμπάρες! Τελικά, ο φίλος μας ο Σωτήρης είχε απόλυτο δίκιο: ταιριάζουμε πολύ, περνάμε ωραία, γελάμε με την καρδιά μας.

How has motherhood changed you? In many ways. The first child changes the couple, their rhythms, daily routines and even their outlook on love.

You believe that you are head over heels for your partner and call that feeling love. Suddenly, when your child comes into the world, another emotion is born, a different love, and you think, “Where has this love been hiding all this time? Why didn’t I feel it before?” Your schedule also changes completely as you find yourself on your child’s timetable. And then the second child arrives and everything changes all over again.

You’re friends with Maria Menounos, the Greek-American actress, presenter and journalist. When did you meet? Maria and I met through a mutual friend who introduced us because he knew us both and thought we would get on well. And he had the right idea because we hit it off from the very first moment. We spend time together, I went to America, she came here and we’ve gone on holidays together. When I was pregnant with my daughter, she offered to baptise her. And now we share the special bond of “koumbares”! In the end, our friend Sotiris was absolutely right: we are very compatible, we have a good time together, and we laugh to our hearts’ content.

Είστε μια πολύ όμορφη γυναίκα και «επισήμως» αφού έχετε το στέμμα της Σταρ Ελλάς 2003. Πόσο έχετε στηριχτεί στην εξωτερική σας ομορφιά; Ο λόγος που πήγα στα καλλιστεία ήταν για να κάνω το χατίρι του μπαμπά μου. Ποτέ δεν είχα ασχοληθεί ιδιαιτέρως με την εξωτερική μου εμφάνιση. Εκείνος όμως, σαν να διαισθανόταν κάτι και επειδή είχε κάποια προβλήματα με την υγεία του, εγώ ήθελα να τον ευχαριστήσω. Μέχρι τότε, ο μόνος στόχος μου ήταν να τελειώσω τις σπουδές μου στα χρόνια που έπρεπε –πράγμα που έκανα. Πήγαινα όμως στις επιδείξεις μόδας και διάβαζα για την εξεταστική την ώρα που με χτένιζαν. Έκανα το μεταπτυχιακό μου παράλληλα με το modeling, το οποίο μου έδινε ένα πολύ καλό χαρτζιλίκι, ειδικά εκείνες τις εποχές. Λίγο πριν γνωρίσω τον σύζυγό μου, παράλληλα με το μεταπτυχιακό μου, έκανα και τηλεόραση και modeling. Τι φοβάστε περισσότερο στη ζωή; Φοβάμαι το ξαφνικό κακό και αναπάντεχο –κάτι που έζησα με τον μπαμπά μου. Είχα φύγει για τον διαγωνισμό Μις Υφήλιος, όπου ήμουν και φαβορί για τον τίτλο, και ξαφνικά γυρίζω και μαθαίνω ότι ο πατέρας μου είχε πεθάνει. Θεωρούμε δεδομένο ότι θα είμαστε πάντα όλοι μαζί, ευτυχισμένοι και υγιείς, και δεν πάει το μυαλό μας στο κακό μέχρι να το ζήσουμε. Αυτό ήταν για μένα ένα δυνατό χαστούκι, που με έκανε να συνειδητοποιήσω πόσο ευγνώμων πρέπει να είμαι, που ξυπνάω το πρωί, που είμαι όρθια, που έχω τα παιδάκια μου. Ας δούμε λίγο και τα επαγγελματικά σας. Σκέφτεστε να επιστρέψετε στην τηλεόραση; Δεν είναι κάτι που έχω αποκλείσει, αλλά δεν θέλω να γυρίσω με κάθε τρόπο. Ήταν ευχάριστο αυτό το διάλειμμα από την τηλεόραση, γιατί μπόρεσα έτσι να χαρώ και τον σύντροφό μου και να δω τα παιδάκια μου να μεγαλώνουν –στιγμές οι οποίες δεν ξαναγυρίζουν. Δεν είναι κάτι που έχω αποκλείσει λοιπόν, αλλά δεν εξαρτάται τελείως από μένα –δεν είναι λίγες οι φορές που έχω συζητήσει διάφορα projects, αλλά δεν έχει προχωρήσει κάποιο. Αν επιστρέψω στην τηλεόραση, θα ήθελα να ασχοληθώ με κάτι προσεγμένο, που να με ενδιαφέρει. Και πώς προέκυψε η δημιουργία των σανδαλιών Marietta’s Fantasy; Όταν έφυγα από την τηλεόραση, ήμουν σε δημιουργική φάση. Δεν ήθελα λοιπόν να καθίσω απλώς στο σπίτι, αλλά επιθυμούσα να κάνω κάτι δικό μου. Άρχισα να κάνω σανδάλια για μένα: στα ταξίδια που έκανα με τον σύζυγό μου, όλοι με ρωτούσαν από πού είχα αγοράσει τα σανδάλια μου, την ώρα που και κάποιες φίλες μου μου έκαναν παραγγελίες για αγορά. Ο άντρας μου ήταν εκείνος που μου πρότεινε να το αντιμετωπίσω πιο επαγγελματικά. Στην αρχή δεν μου φάνηκε καλή ιδέα. Ύστερα όμως και όταν άρχισα να ασχολούμαι, να πηγαίνω σε εκθέσεις, να γνωρίζω ανθρώπους, ένιωσα να με συγκινεί. Ξεκίνησα δειλά και είδα ότι είχε μεγάλη ανταπόκριση από τον κόσμο –τώρα πια το κάνω γύρω στα 5 χρόνια και τον τελευταίο χρόνο ξεκίνησα χονδρική στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, στο Ντουμπάι, στον Λίβανο, στο Κουβέιτ, στην Ιαπωνία, στην Κορέα, στην Ιταλία, στην Ισπανία, στην Τουρκία και στην Κύπρο. Προωθώ τη χώρα μου με σχέδια που εμπνέονται από την Αρχαία Ελλάδα και το ελληνικό καλοκαίρι. Επισκέπτεστε συχνά την πισίνα του Hilton Αθηνών. Πώς σας φαίνεται; Αυτό που μου αρέσει είναι ότι έχεις την πολυτέλεια να είσαι στο κέντρο, ενώ αισθάνεσαι ότι είσαι κάπου εξωτικά.

You’re a very beautiful woman, and “officially” so because you were crowned Miss Star Hellas in 2003. How has your external beauty helped you? I entered the pageant to please my father. I never really bothered about my looks. He, however, seemed to have a premonition about it, and because he was having some health problems at the time, I wanted to make him happy. Up to then, my only goal was to get my degree in the allotted time frame –and I did. I also went to fashion shows and studied for my exams as I was getting my hair done. I got my Master’s Degree while working as a model, and the pocket money it provided was excellent, particularly at the time. A short time before I met my husband, when I was still working on my postgraduate degree, I made television appearances and modelled.

What do you fear most in life? I fear sudden and unexpected bad times – which I experienced with my father. I had left Greece to participate in the Miss Universe Pageant, in which I was a front-runner, and when I returned I was told that my father had passed away. We never think about a time that we won’t all be together, and we don’t worry about bad things until they happen. His death was a rude awakening that made me realise how grateful I should be to wake each morning, to be healthy and to have my children.

And what about your professional life? Have you ever considered returning to television? I haven’t precluded it, but I would like to avoid it if at all possible. This break from television has been amazing because I’ve been able to enjoy time with my husband and watch my children grow up –moments that can’t be experienced again. So although I don’t like to say that I won’t return to television, it isn’t dependent solely on me –there have been many times that I’ve discussed various projects that haven’t moved forward. If I return to television, I would like to work on a special project that interests me deeply.

How did you decide to launch Marietta’s Fantasy sandal line? When I left television, I was in a creative mood. I didn’t want to simply stay home, but wanted to start something of my own. I began to make sandals for me: people started asking me where I had bought my sandals on the trips I took with my husband, and at the same time, some girlfriends wanted to buy a pair for themselves. My husband suggested I approach it in a more professional manner. I didn’t think it was a good idea in the beginning. Afterwards, however, when I stated devoting time to the project, attending exhibitions and meeting new people, I felt more drawn in. I started off cautiously, and saw that the sandals were well-received –and it has been 5 years since and in the last year I’ve been selling the sandals wholesale in Greece and abroad, in Dubai, Lebanon, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Cyprus. I am proud to promote my country through designs inspired by Ancient Greece and the Greek summer.

You often visit the pool of the Hilton Athens. How do you find it? I love the luxury of being in the centre of the city, yet feeling as though you’re somewhere exotic.

ία από τις παλαιότερες συνοικίες του ιστορικού κέντρου της πόλης, η Πλατεία Ηρώων - Πλατεία Ψυρρή - όπως την ξέρουμε, κρύβει το πιο αυθεντικό γλυκοπωλείο της Αθήνας. Η Νάνσυ Κατσικάρη και ο Σεραφείμ Αλεξανδρής, δύο ξεχωριστές προσωπικότητες και σύντροφοι στη ζωή, άνοιξαν τις πόρτες του Σερμπετόσπιτού τους τον Φεβρουάριο του 2014 και έκτοτε, έγιναν οι πιο «γλυκές» παρουσίες στου Ψυρρή.

The most authentic sweet shop of Athens is tucked away in Iroon Square, otherwise known as Psyrri Square, one of the oldest districts in the historic centre of the city. Nansy Katsikari and Seraphim Alexandris, two distinct personalities and life partners, opened the doors of the Serbetospito in February 2014, and made it into one of the “sweetest” places in Psyrri.

Εραστές της σοκολάτας και θαυμαστές της πολίτικης ζαχαροπλαστικής, δημιούργησαν ένα φιλόξενο περιβάλλον που παραπέμπει σε αστικό γλυκοπωλείο της δεκαετίας του 1960. Μαρμάρινα τραπεζάκια, ξύλινες καρέκλες, βάζα με αγριολούλουδα και ψυγεία-προθήκες ρετρό αισθητικής, θυμίζουν την ξεχασμένη αθωότητα μιας άλλης εποχής.

Lovers of chocolate and fans of desserts from Istanbul, they created a cosy environment reminiscent of the urban sweet shops of the 1960s. Marble tables, wooden chairs, vases filled with wildflowers and retro glass-door refrigerators evoke the forgotten innocence of a bygone era.

Στο Σερμπετόσπιτο της Νάνσυ τα γλυκά δεν διαθέτουν ταμπελάκια, μιας και όπως εξηγούν οι ιδιοκτήτες, θέλουν οι ίδιοι να περιγράφουν στους πελάτες την ιστορία πίσω από κάθε συνταγή. Όπως για παράδειγμα, η «Μπισκοτόπιττα» ή αλλιώς «Γαμογλυκό», την οποία εμπνεύστηκαν και δημιούργησαν για την ημέρα του γάμου τους, ή «Το Γλυκό της Αγάπης» που βαφτίστηκε έτσι όταν η Νάνσυ το αφιέρωσε στον σύζυγό της. Από τη λίστα των 40 και πλέον γλυκών δεν λείπουν, βέβαια, και οι πολίτικες συνταγές, με τον χαλβά σαμπάχ να σερβίρεται ζεστός συνοδευμένος από παγωτό καϊμάκι και το βραβευμένο κιουνεφέ να είναι πρώτο στις προτιμήσεις των πελατών. Από την άλλη, οι λάτρεις των «παλιακών» γλυκών θα επιλέξουν κορμό σοκολάτας ή θα ενδώσουν σε μια σιροπιαστή πίτα με φρούτα εποχής. Η Νάνσυ και ο Σεραφείμ αποκαλούν τα γλυκά «παιδιά» τους και τους πελάτες «φιλοξενούμενους» στο σπίτι τους, ενώ δεν διστάζουν να βγουν στον πεζόδρομο της πλατείας και να ταΐσουν στο στόμα έναν-έναν όλους τους θαμώνες του μαγαζιού. Δηλώνουν ότι η γεύση έχει μνήμη και τονίζουν πως η απόλαυση ενός καλού γλυκού είναι μόνο θέμα επιλογής.

The owners explain that desserts offered at "Serbetospito" aren’t labelled, because they like to describe the history behind each recipe to visitors. For example the “Biscuit Pie”, or “Gamoglyko”, which they were inspired to create on the day they married, or the “Love Dessert", which Nansy dedicated to her husband. The 40 odd desserts they prepare include halva Sabah, served hot with ice cream, and their award-winning kanafeh, which is a favourite of their customers. On the other hand, lovers of “traditional” desserts opt for the chocolate and biscuit log (known as “mosaiko”) or succumb to a syrupy cake and seasonal fruit.

Nansy and Seraphim call the sweets their “children” and customers their “guests” in their home and can often be seen in the square, personally spoon-feeding their regulars. They claim that taste has a memory and firmly believe that enjoying a good dessert is simply a matter of choice.

Ποιο ήταν το αγαπημένο σας πιάτο εδώ; Μ. Σ.: Μου άρεσε πολύ το πιάτο με τον μαύρο μπακαλιάρο και ο τόνος με το «χώμα» από ελιά. Ν. Π.: Και μένα ο μπακαλιάρος μού άρεσε απίστευτα! Τον συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα. Μιλήστε μου για τις επαγγελματικές σας δραστηριότητες αυτό το διάστημα. Μ. Σ.: Συνεχίζω να βρίσκομαι στον AΝΤ1 και συζητάμε πολύ ενδιαφέροντα σχέδια, που εύχομαι να γίνουν πραγματικότητα. Ν. Π.: Τελειώνουν τα επεισόδια του «Ελλάδα Σ’ αγαπώ» και βρισκόμαστε σε περίοδο οργάνωσης και προετοιμασίας του "Music School 2" στο Mega Channel. Πότε καταλάβατε η μία για την άλλη ότι θα γίνετε φίλες; Μ. Σ.: Όταν την έβλεπα στο DWTS όπου συμμετείχε. Από εκείνα τα βίντεο στις πρόβες και τα όσα έλεγε κατάλαβα ότι αν ποτέ γνωριζόμασταν, το πιο πιθανό θα ήταν να ταιριάξουμε. Ν. Π. : Και εγώ, πριν ακόμα τη γνωρίσω προσωπικά πολύ καλά, διαισθανόμουν ότι είναι ένας άνθρωπος που «μου πάει». Τι σας ένωσε πιο πολύ; Μ. Σ.: Είναι σαν να ζούμε παράλληλες ζωές με κάποιον τρόπο, σε βαθμό τρομακτικό καμιά φορά. Κοινές εμπειρίες, κοινές πληγές, κοινά ενδιαφέροντα. Κι έπειτα είναι και η καθημερινότητά μας και η εμπιστοσύνη που έχουμε η μία στην άλλη. Ν. Π.: Είναι και ο τρόπος που βλέπουμε τη ζωή γενικότερα, τη δουλειά μας... και τον χορό! Ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σας σημείο στην Αθήνα; Μ. Σ.: Η βόλτα Μοναστηράκι-Θησείο-Ακρόπολη. Ν. Π.: Εγώ θέλω θάλασσα. Να τη βλέπω, να με χαλαρώνει και να με ηρεμεί. Πού θα πηγαίνατε κάποιον φίλο σας από το εξωτερικό που θα ερχόταν στην Αθήνα; Μ. Σ.: Θα επέλεγα να τον πάω στο πιο κοντινό σημείο με θάλασσα, ας πούμε στον Φλοίσβο, για να δει πόσο τυχεροί είμαστε που έχουμε τη θάλασσα τόσο κοντά στο κέντρο. Ν. Π.: Εγώ θα ξεκινούσα από το κέντρο. Για την ακρίβεια, από την Ακρόπολη, την περιοχή της Πλάκας, αλλά θα κατέληγα στο Σούνιο, για να δει μέσα σε λίγη ώρα πόσες διαφορετικές ομορφιές έχει να δώσει αυτή η πόλη. Οι προσωπικοί σας στόχοι; Μ. Σ.: Θα κρατήσω αυτή την παραλία με το ταβερνάκι που ανέφερα πριν. Ν. Π.: Υγεία, για μένα, τα παιδιά μου, τους δικούς μου ανθρώπους. Ισορροπία, αγάπη και ευτυχισμένες στιγμές.

What do you like the most about the Galaxy Bar & Restaurant?

Mary Synatsaki: Apart from the spectacular view? The minimalist aesthetic of the decor and the bubble gum cocktail. I tried the virgin version because I don’t drink alcohol and felt as though I was in Wonderland.

Doretta Papadimitriou: The view is unparalleled! But I also enjoy the peace and the relaxing sensation fostered by good food and lounge music.

What is your favourite dish on the menu?

M. S.: I love the black cod and the tuna tataki. D. P.: I also enjoyed the cod!

I recommend it unreservedly.

What are you working on at the moment?

M. S.: I’m still with ANT1 TV and we are working on very interesting projects that I hope will come to pass. D. P.: The current series of “Greece I Love You” is coming to a close and we are organising and preparing for "Music School 2" at Mega Channel.

When did you first realise you would become friends?

M. S.: When I saw her compete on DWTS. I knew from the way she spoke in the rehearsal videos that we would most likely hit it off if we met. D. P.: Even before I got to know her well I had a feeling that she “suited” me.

How did you become close?

M. S.: In a way, we have lived parallel lives – sometimes it is frightening how similar our paths have been. Common experiences, common disappointments, common interests. And then in our daily lives and the trust we have in each other. D. P.: It’s also the way we perceive life in general, our work… and dance!

What is your favourite place in Athens when you want to be alone?

M. S.: A stroll in Monastiraki, Thissio and the Acropolis. D. P.: I want the sea. Seeing it relaxes and calms me.

Where do you take friends visiting Athens from abroad?

M. S.: I take them to the nearest seashore, perhaps Flisvos, so they can see how lucky we are to have the sea so close to the centre of Athens. D. P.: I start in the centre. Specifically the Acropolis and Plaka. But we end up at Sounion so they can experience the beautiful contrasts the city has to offer.

What are your personal goals?

M. S.: To hold onto the beach with the little tavern I mentioned earlier.

D. P.: Good health for me, my children and the people close to me. Balance, love and happy times.

το ηχητικό… φόντο της συνέντευξης ακούγονταν 25.000 άνθρωποι να ουρλιάζουν από ενθουσιασμό και ανυπομονησία, περιμένοντας στη σκηνή του επετειακού Rockwave Festival την κορυφαία ροκ μπάντα της δεκαετίας: τους Black Keys. O Patrick Carney, o πανύψηλος ντράμερ της μπάντας, με υποδέχθηκε στο καμαρίνι του χαλαρός, ειλικρινής, αλλά και ολίγον εκκεντρικός.

There were 25,000 people... screaming in the background of our interview, excitedly and enthusiastically waiting for the Black Keys, the top rock band of the decade, to make their appearance on the stage at the Annual Rockwave Festival. Patrick Carney, the lanky drummer of the band, welcomed me into his dressing room in his easy-going, honest and somewhat eccentric way.

Καλωσήλθατε στην Ελλάδα. Πρώτη φορά έρχεστε στη χώρα μας;

Welcome to Greece. Is this your first visit to our country? Yes, it is. I went to the Acropolis with my wife and was very impressed. Dan couldn’t come because his brain and body are still on American time.

Ναι, πρώτη φορά. Ανέβηκα και με τη γυναίκα μου στην Ακρόπολη και εντυπωσιάστηκα. Ο Νταν δεν μπορούσε να έρθει, γιατί το μυαλό του και το σώμα του λειτουργούν ακόμα σε χρόνους Αμερικής. Έτσι κι αλλιώς όμως, εσύ και ο Νταν είστε τόσο διαφορετικοί χαρακτήρες – μοιάζετε με case study αντιθέσεων. Ο Νταν ήταν ο δημοφιλής του κολεγίου και εσύ ο αντικοινωνικός. Τώρα, εκείνος μοιάζει πιο απρόσιτος και εσύ είσαι πιο ανοιχτός. Είστε τελικά τόσο διαφορετικοί, όσο λένε τα βιογραφικά σας; Είμαστε συμπληρωματικοί ο ένας του άλλου και δεν μπορούμε χώρια. Είμαστε σαν τον Χοντρό και τον Λιγνό – εγώ είμαι ο Σταν Λόρελ, ο Λιγνός. Η συνύπαρξη με τον Νταν υπήρξε ιδανική από την πρώτη ημέρα, εδώ και 15 χρόνια. Έχουμε συνήθως 5-6 πολύ συγκεκριμένους τρόπους να ξεκινάμε και να ολοκληρώνουμε ένα τραγούδι, ακόμα κι όταν δεν είμαστε στο ίδιο mood. Το γεγονός ότι συνεννοούμαστε δεν κάνει πιο εύκολη τη διαδικασία, απλώς την κάνει πιο ευχάριστη, γιατί το στούντιο έτσι κι αλλιώς είναι ένας χώρος που δίνεις την ψυχή σου, ακόμα κι όταν δεν έχεις τη διάθεση, ακόμα και αν μέσα σου σε βασανίζουν άλλα πράγματα. Πολλοί λένε ότι το «Turn Βlue» είναι το πιο συναισθηματικό άλμπουμ σας. Εσείς τι πιστεύετε; Κοιτώντας από απόσταση δύο χρόνων, αυτή ήταν η πιο σκληρή δουλειά μας. Ο Νταν έπαιρνε διαζύγιο την περίοδο που ηχογραφού-

In any case, you and Dan are very different – like a case study of opposites. Dan was popular in university and you were antisocial, but now he seems unreachable while you are more open. Are you really as different as your biographies claim? We complement each other and balance each other out. We’re like Laurel and Hardy – I’m Stan Laurel, the ultra-thin Englishman. Dan and I hit it off from the very first day we met, fifteen years ago. We have 5-6 very specific ways of starting and completing a song, even when we aren’t in the same mood. The fact that we understand each other doesn’t make the process any easier, just more enjoyable because you must give the studio your all, even when you’re not in the mood, even when you’re consumed by other matters.

Many of your fans believe that “Turn Blue” is your most emotional album to date. What do you think? Even when looking back at it two years later, it was our hardest recording ever. Dan was in the process of getting a divorce at the time, and I was also in a difficult place. An emotional void tends to generate itself in your head at such times, which traps you. I assure you that if we were to set foot in the studio tomorrow, “Turn Blue”

σαμε το άλμπουμ, ενώ ούτε εγώ περνούσα εύκολα. Σε τέτοιες στιγμές συναισθηματικής φόρτισης, το κενό που δημιουργείται στο κεφάλι σου σε παγιδεύει. Σε διαβεβαιώ ότι αν μπαίναμε αύριο στο στούντιο, τίποτα από το «Turn Blue» δεν θα ήταν το ίδιο. Ούτως ή άλλως, το κάθε άλμπουμ έγινε με άλλη διάθεση και για διαφορετικό σκοπό. Ένα από τα άλμπουμ σας λέγεται «Brothers». Εσείς νιώθετε σαν αδέλφια; Νιώθω σαν να είμαστε παντρεμένο ζευγάρι και αδέλφια μαζί. Είναι σαν να παντρεύτηκα τον κολλητό μου. Περνάω μαζί του περισσότερο χρόνο απ' ό,τι με οποιονδήποτε άλλο αδερφό μου. Θυμάμαι την πρώτη φορά που επιστρέψαμε από περιοδεία, έλεγα «φτάνει, δεν θέλω να τον ξαναδώ», αλλά ποτέ δεν είναι έτσι. Παρ’ όλ’ αυτά όταν δεν δουλεύουμε, θέλω να παίρνω απόσταση από τους Black Keys. Έτσι κι αλλιώς ο καθένας έχει δικές του δραστηριότητες και διαφορετικά χόμπι. Περίγραψέ μου τα πρώτα σας χρόνια ως Black Keys… Αβεβαιότητα, χιλιόμετρα ατελείωτα, ζωή στους δρόμους, απλήρωτοι συνέχεια, ταξίδια από άκρη σε άκρη της χώρας μέσα σε φτηνά βαν… Τότε μάλιστα δοκιμάσαμε να προχωρήσουμε σαν τρίο με τον Gabe Fulvimar, αλλά αντιληφθήκαμε πως κανείς άλλος δεν έχει τη δική μας τρέλα και τη διάθεσή μας για σκληρή δουλειά. Δεν ήταν εύκολο κάποιος να ανεχτεί τις δυσκολίες που ζήσαμε τα πρώτα χρόνια και δεν μπορείς να απαιτήσεις από κανέναν απόλυτη αφοσίωση. Στη ζωή μπορείς να μοιραστείς τα πάντα, αλλά όχι το όραμα. Κατάγεστε και οι δύο από το Άκρον του Οχάιο, έναν τόπο που δεν είναι αυτό που θα λέγαμε «διεθνής πολιτιστικός προορισμός». Πώς σας επηρέασε το Άκρον στον τρόπο δουλειάς σας; Μας έκανε αγωνιστές. Το Άκρον είναι ένα μέρος σαν την Αθήνα. Οι δύσκολες συνθήκες ζωής και οι λιγοστές ευκαιρίες μάς υποχρέωσαν να παλέψουμε διπλά για όσα θέλαμε να πετύχουμε, σε σχέση με το αν καταγόμασταν από τη Νέα Υόρκη ή το Λος Άντζελες. Τελειώνοντας το κολέγιο ψάχνεις απεγνωσμένα να βρεις τι θέλεις να κάνεις, και όταν νομίζεις ότι ξέρεις ποιος είναι ο στόχος σου, καταλήγεις να κάνεις κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό από αυτόν. Μετά την επιτυχία, τι άλλαξε σε σας και στον ήχο σας; Δεν άλλαξε σε καμμία περίπτωση ο τρόπος που φτιάχνουμε κι αισθανόμαστε τη μουσική. Τα μόνα πράγματα που άλλαξαν είναι ο τρόπος που ταξιδεύουμε και το στήσιμο της παραγωγής επί σκηνής, για να μπορούμε να ανταποκριθούμε στα μεγαλύτερα στάδια και κοινά. Θεωρείστε η κορυφαία ροκ μπάντα της δεκαετίας. Εσείς πώς βιώνετε την επιτυχία; Απολαμβάνω αυτό που συμβαίνει και προσπαθώ συνεχώς να μου θυμίζω πως η ζωή περνάει γρήγορα. Επίσης, δεν κάνω σχέδια: όποτε έκανα σχέδια για το μέλλον, μια αόρατη μαγική δύναμη μου τα κατέστρεφε. Νιώθω την τύχη και την ευγνωμοσύνη ενός ανθρώπου που βρέθηκε από τον Άκρον να γυρίζει τον κόσμο κάνοντας αυτό που αγαπά. Άνοιξα σήμερα το παράθυρο στο Hilton Αθηνών, είδα τη θέα και σκέφτηκα πως ο πατέρας μου δεν είχε ποτέ στη ζωή του την τύχη να δει τον Παρθενώνα, ενώ εγώ έχω ταξιδέψει εκτός Αμερικής τουλάχιστον 50 φορές. Οι ροκ μπάντες στην Ελλάδα στέλνουν κοινωνικά και πολιτικά μηνύματα με τη μουσική τους. Εσείς το κάνετε αυτό; Αν οι κοινωνίες έχουν αυτή την ανάγκη, αυτό πρέπει να κάνουν οι ροκ καλλιτέχνες. Όμως δεν πιστεύω ότι είναι ανάγκη να πεις «τώρα θα γράψω ένα τραγούδι για την 11η Σεπτεμβρίου». Τα γεγονότα υπάρχουν και η μουσική τα αγγίζει μόνη της. Εμείς ως μπάντα στηρίζουμε τη Δημοκρατική παράταξη, πληρώνουμε τους φόρους που μας αναλογούν και προσπαθούμε να αφυπνίσουμε με τον δικό μας τρόπο τον κόσμο. would be an entirely different album. Each of our albums was recorded in a different mood and for a different purpose.

One of your albums is entitled “Brothers”. Do you feel like brothers?

I feel like we’re both a married couple and brothers. It’s like I married my best buddy. I spend more time with him than with any of my brothers. I remember thinking the first time we got back from tour, “that’s enough, I won’t want to see him again”, but in the end, that wasn’t the case. Nonetheless, when we aren’t working, I need some distance from the Black Keys. We each have our own activities and different hobbies.

What were the Black Keys like in the early days? Uncertain, endless kilometres, a life on the road, perpetually unpaid, travelling from one end of the country to the other in a cheap van… We tried working as a trio with Gabe Fulvimar, but soon realised than no one else was neither as crazy as we were nor as hard working. Not many people could withstand the difficulties of the early years and it isn’t possible to demand complete dedication from anyone. It is possible to share many things in life, but not a vision.

You are both from Akron, Ohio, which isn’t exactly an “international cultural destination”. How did Akron influence your work? It made us fighters. Akron and Athens are similar. The difficult living conditions and lack of opportunities forced us to work twice as hard for what we wanted to achieve, compared to coming from New York or Los Angeles. After university you have to desperately search for what you want to do, and when you come up with a goal, you end up doing something completely different.

Did your sound change after you found success? The way we make and feel about music did not change at all. The only things that did change were the way we travelled and set up the stage, which was adapted to bigger stadiums and audiences.

You’re considered the top rock band of the decade. How do you define success? I enjoy my life and try to remind myself that life is short. I also never make plans. Whenever I made plans for the future, an invisible magic force would destroy them. I feel lucky and grateful to be a man from Akron who is able to tour the world doing what he loves. As I opened my window at the Hilton Athens today and looked at the view, I thought about my father, who wasn’t fortunate enough to get to see the Parthenon, while I have travelled outside the States at least 50 times.

Rock bands in Greece send social and political messages through their music. What about you? If that is what society needs, that is what rock artists must do. But I don’t feel the need to say “now I must write a song about 9/11”. Things happen and music touches on them on its own. As a band, we are Democrats, pay the taxes we owe and try to reach the world in our own way.

Και ο Μινωικός κόσμος μπορεί να καταστράφηκε, αλλά η λάμψη του έμεινε τόσο ανεξίτηλη που μοιάζει να μάγεψε τους τόσους λαούς που θέλησαν να κατακτήσουν αργότερα το κρητικό νησί. Ρωμαίοι, Βυζαντινοί, Σαρακηνοί, Ενετοί και Οθωμανοί, καθένας έχει προσθέσει τη δική του σφραγίδα και έχει εμπλουτίσει το νησί με τον δικό του χαρακτήρα. Η Κρήτη φαντάζει να έχει ταξιδέψει στις χώρες των κατακτητών της και να έχει επιστρέψει με αμέτρητα σουβενίρ, έτσι ώστε σήμερα να μην μπορεί κανένας να προσδιορίσει εάν πρόκειται για μια ανατολική ευρωπαϊκή επαρχία, για έναν ημιτροπικό, εξωτικό παράδεισο ή απλώς για ένα γραφικό ελληνικό νησί. Δεν είναι τόσο η πολυπολιτισμικότητα του νησιού που εντυπωσιάζει, όσο οι αμέτρητες εναλλαγές τοπίων. Με μια γρήγορη ματιά, η γη φαίνεται να διψάει για νερό. Με μια πιο προσεκτική, τα αμέτρητα πράσινα φαράγγια που ξεπηδούν από τους γυμνούς βράχους μαρτυρούν ότι ολόκληρο το νησί αναβλύζει νερό από κάθε γωνιά του. Η γενέτειρα του Δία, τα βουνά της Κρήτης, σκεπάζονται με χιόνι μέχρι τα τέλη της άνοιξης, γεγονός που κάνει το νησί να ξεχωρίζει στο Αιγαίο με την καταπράσινη φύση του. Από τους πρόποδες των βουνών μέχρι τη θάλασσα, το μάτι χάνεται σε αναρίθμητους ελαιώνες και στον δυνατό καλοκαιρινό ήλιο, το πράσινο γίνεται χρυσό με φόντο το καταγάλανο της Μεσογείου. Και εκεί που τα χρώματα σε νανουρίζουν, η έντονη μυρωδιά από ρίγανη και θυμάρι σε προκαλεί να εξερευνήσεις τις απάτητες παραλίες, τις μυστηριώδεις σπηλιές και τα χωριά που είναι κρυμμένα ανάμεσα στις βουνοκορφές. Το Βάι, ο Μπάλος, το Ελαφονήσι, το Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς, τα καλντερίμια της πόλης του Ρεθύμνου. Τα μέρη είναι αμέτρητα και καθένα από αυτά αποτελεί μία μοναδική εμπειρία. Κι αν τα χιλιόμετρα πολυσχιδών παραλιών κατάφεραν να μαγέψουν Βυζαντινούς και Ρωμαίους, η Κρήτη κρύβει πολλούς περισσότερους θησαυρούς, που πρέπει εσύ ο ίδιος να ψάξεις για να τους βρεις. Εκεί στα μικρά χωριά, τα ξεχασμένα από τον χρόνο στη μέση του πουθενά, σε κάποιο ετοιμόρροπο καφενεδάκι με σοβαντισμένα ντουβάρια, κάτω από κάποιο γέρικο πλατάνι τριακοσίων ετών, εκεί, μιλώντας με τους ανθρώπους θα καταλάβεις τον λόγο για τον οποίο, αν ρωτήσεις κάποιον για την Κρήτη δεν θα σου μιλήσει για την ιστορία ή τα τοπία της, αλλά για τη φιλοξενία της, για τα πανηγύρια της, για τη ζεστασιά των ανθρώπων της. Πεζοπορία και ορειβασία Η ορεινή βλάστηση και οι τραχιές βουνοπλαγιές της Κρήτης προσφέρουν ατελείωτες ευκαιρίες για αναρρίχηση και πεζοπορία. Οι χείμαρροι που κυλούν ορμητικά από τα βουνά έχουν δημιουργήσει αρκετά φαράγγια, τα οποία φτάνουν μέχρι τη θάλασσα. Το Ε4, το μονοπάτι για πεζοπορία που ξεκινά από τα Πυρηναία και περνά μέσα από την ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα, συνεχίζεται στην Κρήτη. Διασχίζει όλο το νησί, από το Καστέλι στα δυτικά μέχρι τον Ζάκρο στα ανατολικά, καλύπτοντας πάνω από τριακόσια χιλιόμετρα. Τμήματα του μονοπατιού που ξεκινούν από τις Αρχάνες και περνούν από τη Μονή Αγκαράθου,

Although the Minoan world was destroyed, its light continues to burn so brightly that it appears to have bewitched the nations that later attempted to conquer the Cretan island.

Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Venetians and Ottomans – each left an imprint and enriched the island with its character. Crete seems to have journeyed to the countries of its conquerors and returned with countless souvenirs. It is difficult to determine whether it is an Eastern European province or a semi-tropical exotic paradise or simply a picturesque Greek island.

It is more the endlessly changing landscapes that impress, rather than the multiculturalism of the island. At first glance, the earth seems to thirst for water. A closer look reveals the innumerable green gorges that spring from the bare rocks, which prove that the entire island produces water in every corner. The birthplace of Zeus, the mountains of Crete are covered with snow until late spring, ensuring the verdant Aegean island stands apart from its counterparts. From the foothills of the mountains to the sea, the eye is attracted to acres upon acres of olive groves and the green turns to gold under the bright sun, with the blue of the Mediterranean in the background.

And just as visitors are lulled by the colours, the strong aroma of oregano and thyme dares them to explore the unspoilt beaches, mysterious caves and villages tucked in the mountains. Vai, Balos, Elafonisi, the Gorge of Samaria, and the cobblestone streets of Rethymnon – a myriad of places to visit, each one a unique experience. The kilometres of long, multifaceted beaches enchanted the Byzantines and Romans alike, but Crete has many hidden treasures that visitors must uncover on their own. Take the time to seek out the small villages, the ones in the middle of nowhere forgotten by time. Have a drink in a ramshackle traditional café with plastered walls under a three hundred year old plane tree and chat with the locals. One thing will become perfectly clear: you will understand why the friends you asked about Crete didn’t mention its history or its landscapes, but rather its hospitality, its festivals and the warmth of its people.

Hiking and Mountain Climbing The mountain vegetation and rugged hillsides of Crete offer a plethora of opportunities for climbing and hiking. The streams that burst from the mountains created many gorges that stretch down to the sea. The E4, the hiking trail that starts in the Pyrenees and traverses mainland Greece, continues on Crete. It crosses the entire island, from Kasteli in the west to Zakros in the east, covering over three hundred kilometres. Sections of the trail starting in Acharnes and passing through the Monastery of Agarathou, Kastamonitsa, Agios Georgios, Selakano to Prina, are just a short drive away.

The Gorge of Samaria, the longest gorge in Europe, offers a long, classic hike, which takes about six hours. The gorge ends at the sea, at Agia Roumeli,

την Κασταμονίτσα, τον Άγιο Γεώργιο, το Σελάκανο και φτάνουν μέχρι την Πρίνα, βρίσκονται σε μικρή απόσταση με το αυτοκίνητο. Μια κλασική, μακρινή πεζοπορία είναι στο Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς, το μακρύτερο φαράγγι της Ευρώπης. Η διαδρομή από την κορυφή μέχρι την άκρη διαρκεί περίπου έξι ώρες. Το φαράγγι καταλήγει στη θάλασσα, στην Αγία Ρουμέλη, και η επιστροφή μέχρι τον δρόμο γίνεται με βάρκες. Το φαράγγι είναι ανοιχτό για πεζοπορία από τον Απρίλιο μέχρι τον Οκτώβριο και χρειάζεται να προγραμματίσετε προσεκτικά τις προμήθειες που θα έχετε μαζί σας. Οι παραλίες της Κρήτης. Η Κρήτη έχει 155 χιλιόμετρα από ηλιόλουστες παραλίες με φιλόξενη άμμο κατά μήκος των ακτών της, οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες βρίσκονται στη βόρεια πλευρά του νησιού. Τρεις Εκκλησιές - Αστερούσια: Η χωμάτινη διαδρομή μετά από τον Πύργο είναι απαιτητική (προτιμήστε όχημα 4Χ4), αλλά θα σας αποζημιώσει με τη μοναδική θέα στον ορεινό όγκο των Αστερουσίων: μικροί καταρράκτες, πηγές, κοπάδια από αιγοπρόβατα, πετρόκτιστες μάντρες και μιτάτα, πανέμορφα ξωκλήσια... Πλατιά Περάματα - Λέντας: Στον δρόμο από τον Λέντα προς τα Καλά Λιμάνια, μια σειρά από κολπάκια, μερικά άναρχα δομημένα λυόμενα και δυο-τρεις μονάδες με μπανγκαλόους, που απευθύνονται κυρίως σε οικογένειες ντόπιων. Γαϊδουρονήσι Ή Χρυσή - Ιεράπετρα: Το καραβάκι αναχωρεί καθημερινά από την Ιεράπετρα, για να σας οδηγήσει επτά μίλια νότια, σε ένα νησάκι καλυμμένο με κεδρόδασος και περιστοιχισμένο από παραλίες στρωμένες με ροζ θραύσματα οστράκων. Μπάλος - ακρωτήριο Γραμβούσα: Όλες οι αποχρώσεις του μπλε και του πράσινου, ζεστή ρηχή λιμνοθάλασσα διάστικτη με όστρακα, πρόσβαση με ημίωρη πορεία ή με καραβάκι από το Καστέλι Κισάμου. Ελαφονήσι: Δαντελωτές παραλίες με ροζ άμμο από θραύσματα κοχυλιών, αμμοθίνες και κρινάκια, μια χούφτα βραχονησίδες που ωθεί στο όνειρο. Φραγκοκάστελλο: Το ομώνυμο φρούριο χτίστηκε από τους Ενετούς τον 14ο αιώνα σαν φυλάκιο της περιοχής και του πελάγους. Σήμερα, τα ερείπια του, στοιχειωμένα από τους Δροσουλίτες, δεσπόζουν πάνω από μια λιμνοθάλασσα με γαλαζοπράσινα –ή πρασινογάλαζα– νερά. Πλακιάς: Μια σειρά μικρών, ιδιωτικών όρμων για ολικό μαύρισμα… Σαρακίνικο: Η κοσμικότερη παραλία της Γαύδου. Άγιος Παύλος - νότιο Ρέθυμνο: Πίσω από το προφυλαγμένο λιμάνι, αμμόλοφοι τριάντα μέτρων και εκπληκτικό ηλιοβασίλεμα πίσω από την Τριόπετρα. Πρέβελη - νότιο Ρέθυμνο: Η πλέον φωτογραφημένη παραλία της Κρήτης. Νωρίς το πρωί και αργά το απόγευμα, όταν αποχωρήσουν οι μονοήμερες εκδρομές, θα καταλάβετε γιατί κάποτε οι «χίπηδες» τη θεωρούσαν κέντρο διαλογισμού και εσωτερικής αναζήτησης… Χώρα Σφακίων: Ο ήλιος καυτός, τα γαλαζοπράσινα νερά παγωμένα και ο ίσκιος της σπηλιάς ευπρόσδεκτος! Τριόπετρα - νότιο Ρέθυμνο: Άγιος Παύλος, Τριόπετρα, Πλατιά Περάματα, Καλά Λιμάνια, μια χωμάτινη διαδρομή με θέα σε ορισμένες από τις ομορφότερες και πιο «πριβέ» ακρογιαλιές της Κρήτης. Κομμός: Η παραλία του Κομμού σάς προσφέρει το μπάνιο σας στα πεντακάθαρα της νερά, ενώ μπορείτε να δείτε το αρχαίο λιμάνι της Φαιστού, το οποίο, εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια υπάρχει υπερήφανα εκεί, για να μας θυμίζει τη μεγάλη ιστορία του τόπου μας. Κάθε χρόνο, οι χελώνες Καρέτα-Καρέτα συνηθίζουν να γεννούν τα αυγά τους στην παραλία αυτή.

The Beaches of Crete Crete has over 155 kilometres of long, sandy, sun-drenched beaches, most of which are located on the north side of the island.

Treis Ekklisies - Asterousia: The dirt road after Pyrgos is demanding (4x4 vehicles are best), but will reward visitors with breath-taking views of the Asterousion mountains: small waterfalls, springs, flocks of wild sheep, stone walls and beautiful country chapels…

Platia Peramata - Lentas: Look for a series of small coves on the road from Lentas to Kala Limania, some with a smattering of prefabricated houses and others with bungalows catering to local families.

Gaidouronisi or Chrisi - Ierapetra: Little boats depart daily from Ierapetra, taking visitors seven miles south to a small island covered in a cedar forest and surrounded by beaches lined with shattered pink seashells.

Balos - Gramvousa Cape: All shades of blue and green, a warm shallow lagoon dotted with shells, Balos can be reached after a half-hour hike or by boat from Kasteli Kisamou.

Elafonisi: Lacy beaches with pink sand made of fragmented seashells, with dunes and lilies, Elafonisi is comprised of a handful of dreamy islets.

Frangokastello: The Frantokastello fort was built by the Venetians in the 14th century as their sea outpost. Today its ruins, haunted by the Drosoulites, tower over a lagoon with blue-green –or green-blue– water.

Plakia: A series of small, private coves. The perfect place for an all-over tan…

Sarakiniko: The busiest beach on the small island of Gavdos.

Agios Pavlos - south Rethymnon: Behind the harbour, the beach of Agios Pavlos is accessed along thirty meters of dunes and boasts a stunning sunset behind Triopetra.

Preveli - south Rethymnon: The most photographed beach on Crete. In early morning and late afternoon, once the daily excursions have left, the reason the “hippies” considered it the optimal location for meditation and soul searching becomes clear….
