WELCOME TO THE BEACH

South Carolina’s Grand Strand, the spectacular 60 mile coastline that stretches from Little River to Georgetown, is one of the top ranked beach destinations in the country. In 2011, Trip Advisor® reviewers ranked Myrtle Beach as the #6 Top Beach Spot in the world for its top-rated options for hotels, vacation rentals, attractions and restaurants. If you have never stayed with us before, you’ll be amazed at the choices for entertainment and shopping at one-of-a-kind venues like Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach and Market Common. Dining

ART BURGER • SUSHI • BAR The hottest new oceanfront restaurant in Myrtle Beach, ART Burger + Sushi Bar, is being noticed by discriminating golfers. Located beside the Myrtle Beach boardwalk, guests may dine outside and gaze at the beautiful beach scene or head inside for a view of stunning art works, busy chefs creating culinary masterpieces and a classically beautiful wait staff eager to tend to golfers’ needs. Bartenders cast a surreal fog while crafting icy-cold specialties in the area’s only liquid nitrogen bar. Cocktails take on a luxuriously smooth texture, and the coldest beers in town are capped with uniquely frosty heads. Whether your tastes run to sake, beer, fine wines or bourbon, ART can capably quench thirsts. For those on a quest for superior burgers, ART uses responsibly raised beef that’s cooked to order and plated in extraordinary presentations, such as the lunch/brunch favorite called the Munch topped with a thick slice of roasted pork belly, whole grain mustard, premium Cheddar and a fried egg; or the Picasso, where the burger is blackened and layered with blue cheese, marinated red onions, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese sauce. Artistic sandwiches include the Van Gogh’s blackened tuna with wasabi mayo; or the Michelangelo where a grilled chicken breast is the foundation for fried fresh mozzarella, tomato jam and crisp bacon. Shareable appetizers are spectacular, like Ahi Tuna Lollipops where the freshest fish that can be procured is bathed in ginger-soy reduction, coated with sesame seeds and served atop wakame salad. Exemplary sushi choices include pressed, maki or temaki as well as nigiri, sashimi and specialty rolls like Sex on the Beach with soft shell crab, cucumber, cream cheese, avocado, masago and spicy mayonnaise. The Winery of the South

Duplin - Much More Than A Winery There’s a major new attraction in North Myrtle Beach, and it’s unlike any other along the Grand Strand. Duplin Winery’s new North Myrtle Beach location is 15,000 square feet of Cool, Sweet and Easy. ! By Lei Gainer " he family-friendly good times roll six days a week at this attraction. There’s live musical entertainment, corking demonstrations, foods to sample and, of course, wine tastings. For just $5 per person, you can taste up to 10 different Duplin wines and munch on complimentary

crackers. Popular local entertainers perform regularly. Now and again, National Fiddle Champion Curtis Lee even drops by to play a few tunes. If you’ve visited Duplin’s main winery in Rose Hill, N.C., you know what a good time Duplin Winery’s owners, Dave and Jonathan Fussell, provide. And, if you haven’t made that trip, you’re in for a real treat in North Myrtle Beach.

“We’re serious about our wines, but relaxed about life,” says Jonathan Fussell, president of Duplin Wine Family and head of the winery’s marketing division. “Our tours and tastings are different from those you’ll find at most other wineries. We don’t drink our wine with our pinky sticking out. We enjoy entertaining our guests with fun facts about Muscadine grapes and Carolina winemaking. We like to share a laugh over stories about our beginnings when we could only afford to sell our wine in mason jars and delivered those jars to distributors in a converted hog trailer. We treat our guests like old friends, and we have a good time together while we’re telling them about our wines.” Duplin Winery began in the 1970s as a small operation, bottling its first wines in mason jars; but today it is the largest winery in the South. Through three

generations, the Fussells have also grown Duplin Winery into the largest Muscadine winery in the world. It remains a family affair.

My brother Dave and I have dreamed of opening a location along the Grand Strand since the 1990s.

Dave and Jonathan Fussell, the winery’s current owners, love to tell stories about their grandfather, D.J., planting the vineyards and making the company’s first wines with their father, David, and Uncle Dan. “It was a real struggle in the beginning,” recalls Dave Fussell. “We would label the wines that were bottled that day after spaghetti dinners. The whole family would pitch in.”

David’s sons embraced their father’s vision, but they also had dreams of their own. They worked to broaden the market for their wines by creating and delivering a special “Duplin Experience” for their guests. “My father discovered long ago that a winery could not be “just a winery.” It had to be an entertainment destination,” Jonathan explains. “My brother Jonathan and I have dreamed of opening a location along the Grand Strand since the 1990s,” says Dave Fussell, president and CEO of Duplin Winery. “It had to be more than just a wine tasting room. We envisioned a building that would be a landmark with ongoing activities that would make our beach winery a real attraction. We have that now and we hope it will become a gathering place for current Duplin customers visiting the area, as well as a place for folks who

want to experience our wines for the first time.” Today, Duplin Winery produces 4.6 million bottles of wine a year with the best selling wine being Hatteras Red, Duplin now rivals the top 20 family owned wineries in the nation. But their appreciation of faith, family and fun is rivaled by none. Unlike most attractions along the Strand, Duplin Winery isn’t open on Sundays because the Fussells think Duplin employees should have the opportunity to attend church and spend more time with their families. Duplin encourages families to visit their wineries together. Not only can kids enjoy the musical entertainment and tour the facilities with their parents, but they can also get a special non-alcoholic wine “sweetzer” at the tasting table while their parents enjoy a wine tasting. And, while there is always that emphasis on fun, great wine is at the core of the Duplin Winery experience. The winery currently produces 42 differ-

ent wines including reds, whites, blushes, fruit wines, sangrias and champagnes, as well as alcohol-free wine. Currently sold in thirteen states in the South, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, its wines have been honored with more than 150 awards over the years, including some normally given to wines from the classic West Coast wine belt. They have been praised by magazines like Elite and Martha Stewart Living which raved about Duplin’s Magnolia as “a favorite summertime wine.” “From our dry red Burgundy wine to our sweetest wines, Duplin has a taste to fit any occasion,” says Dave. “You can enjoy our wines with anything from a good steak to some good ‘ol southern barbecue. If you like to sip a frozen drink, we even have sweetzers made with our wines.” In addition to its wines, Duplin’s North Myrtle Beach location has many winerelated specialty items, sweetzer mixes, a fudge station, wine-inspired jellies and sauces, gift baskets, souvenirs and more in a spacious 5,000 square foot retail space.

The Duplin location at North Myrtle Beach is an impressive, rustic-style building with large covered porches ideal for relaxing. From the indoor and outdoor signage to the replica of the Hatteras Lighthouse inside, it’s an intriguing and engaging facility. Located adjacent to Barefoot Landing and connected to Alligator Adventure by a custom-built covered bridge, the North Myrtle Beach Duplin Winery is open Mondays through Saturdays (closed Sundays). Visit Duplin Winery soon. It’s the best place on the Grand Strand to sample outstanding wines, have some laughs, and experience the Cool, Sweet and Easy side of life. “We’ve put the welcome mat out for you, says Jonathan. “And, we’re ready to show you a really good time.

On North Carolina’s southern coast is Calabash, the picturesque one-time fishing village that modestly calls itself the “Seafood Capital of the World.” This tiny port shaded by large oaks has become synonymous with a style of cooking that involves corn meal battering and frying. Some say it all started in the 1930’s in a sleepy little fishing village nestled between inlets and marshes, just over the North Carolina border. Fishermen brought in their catch and were met by the locals to see what was caught and what they could buy. Calabash quickly became known for its fine quality of fresh shrimp and fish. Clinton Morse, a local businessman, began serving up tubs of deep-fired seafood that had been dipped in a light seasoned batter, cooked golden brown and served very hot. “Calabash style” seafood was born – conjuring up his recipe with the image of massive quantities and varieties of seafood. Hush puppies accompany every meal. Fried to a golden brown, they often reach the table before your chair is warm.

A mere 12 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway is a jewel of “Americana.” Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson’s Township Scheme. It was laid out on a riverbluff in the center of what became Horry County. Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and small engagements were fought near Kingston. Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox, had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River. After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain’s King George II. The County’s name was changed to Horry (pronounced O-Ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801 and a courthouse was established in Kingston. Kingston’s name was later changed to Conwayborough for General Robert Conway.

Myrtle Beach Golf The Golf Capital of the World

This is the “Golf Capital of the World” because there are over a hundred golf courses located in a 60-mile stretch of coastline known as the Grand Strand. You can play a different course every day for three months and still have new courses to look forward to. Another reason for that label is that here you can find some of the highest quality golf courses in the country. Golf Digest recently named several of the beach’s courses to the “Top 100 Public Courses in America” list for the 2014 – 2015 season. Thirty-six of the area’s courses hold a rank of four and a half stars or higher. Throw in nationally-known golf schools, top-quality practice facilities, restaurants and nightlife and it’s obvious why we’re the Golf Capital of the World!
